#that palisman is in for a wild ride

[shows up a year late with Starbucks] Okay so. The kid fight at Eclipse Lake. Let's talk about it.
Not only is the animation gorgeous, but I love the clues that there's more going on under the surface than JUST Hunter dueling Amity for the key.
Tumblr media
First off, the scene has plot significance right off the bat with Flapjack protecting Hunter, thereby confirming he's chosen him as his witch, and Hunter need only accept him to seal the bond. It doesn't matter that he perched agreeably on Amity's shoulder a minute ago, or that he's technically helping Belos if Hunter obtains the key... It's not about them. Flapjack has been around for 400 years. He knows accepting Hunter for who he is, now, is the best way to help him moving forward. He knows love is patient.
But the stutter in Hunter's teleportation proves there’s a learning curve here. "Real staffs are weird," he complains, and I love the hint of nervousness in his voice. But despite that, he's all in. He can worry about being tainted by wild magic or whatever later.
Tumblr media
When Amity traps him, I love that we see the effort it takes him to break the bonds. Yes, Amity is strong, but it seems clear to me the difficulty is partially because he's still learning how to work together with Flapjack. This isn't a staff made with artificial magic. It's a living, sentient thing. His expression is wild, desperate. The boy is unhinged.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Case in point: He immediately sends a volley that reflects off the Titan veins, just like he'd warned Eda and King against. Even as he blips around Amity, his composure is nothing like it was in the fight against Kikimora in Hunting Palismen. There, his movements are smooth, his expression controlled, even though that was arguably a high stakes fight, too! But if you slow down the animation, you can see here he's wide-eyed and grimacing. Using a palisman, for him, is apparently like riding a wild stallion when you're used to a gelding. He's practiced enough at combat and magic to instantly get the hang of it, but he's still going WTFFF.
Then comes the iconic "If you really wanna help, then gimme that key!" While his manic delivery might not be, uh, persuasive, he does seem to mean what he says: "I don't want your friendship, your sympathy, your understanding. If you really want to help me, then give me what I need to redeem myself." He's telling us in that one statement that his self-worth is completely tied up in Belos' approval - in the present - and it's depressing.
His genuine relief at the end (and his attempt to express it) shows it was desperation, not malice, that drove him to violence. He solved the conflict the only way he knows how.
Tumblr media
And hey! Accepting Flapjack as his palisman means he can finally understand him! I love how soft and unguarded he is in that scene. "Is that your name? Can you say it again?" And even calling his name "weird" comes with an amused chuckle, not an insult. I honestly think part of that is the high from completing his self-appointed mission, but still. They're cute, your honor.

Watching and Dreaming spoilers:
For a while now, I have had many issues with The Owl House. But after that finale, while still flawed, all I want to do is talk about how amazing it was.
While oddly quick, the Collector’s arc perfectly displayed how, for all the horrible things he has done, he genuinely never meant any harm because he simply cannot understand how what he is doing is wrong. He does not even understand the concept of death. I loved seeing Luz open up to him. And him attempting to apply the lesson he learned to Belos worked to both reiterate how much of a child he is while adding suspense to the scene, and his subsequent breakdown as he finally understands what death truly means was heartbreaking. On top of that, he wraps the series’s theme of people othered by society becoming a found family in a pretty little bow. He was first manipulated by the Archivists, then wrongfully imprisoned by King’s father, then manipulated once more by Belos. Of all the characters, he is the one who was the most isolated and most in need of a friend. And in the end, he finally finds some in the people who genuinely cared.
Luz, Eda, and King’s reunion was genuinely so heartwarming it made me cry. Seeing how these three have grown to care about each other so much since episode 1 is so beautiful.
Belos did not disappoint. Every scene with him, as usual, was pure tension. Pure horror. Even on his last legs, he manages to be a terrifying, devastating threat. While we had theorized about it for a while now, actually seeing him possess the Titan was as amazing as it was horrifying. But in the end, for all his ploys and schemes, he was just buying himself more time. He died in the rain, the consequences of his actions finally catching up to him. A macabre send off to an amazing villain.
The final battle was absolutely beautiful. The animation was so smooth and the visuals were gorgeous. I could not tear my eyes way from the screen for a single second.
I absolutely adored the epilogue. Seeing Hunter become a palisman carver was such a genius move. He has completely separated himself from Belos, and is happily reversing the damage his abuser caused, all while finally surrounded by people he loved. The Wild Magic University was so visually amazing, and seeing how all the characters wound up with their happy endings filled me with so much delight. I will admit, there are many loose threads I feel should have been explored, and the glimpses we got of other characters (Raine and Darius in particular) makes me disappointed we did not get to see more of the in depth, but I still loved it,
All in all, the finale encapsulated everything I loved about this series. Lighthearted comedy, loveable characters, horror and tension, heartbreak, and hope. This whole show has been such an amazing ride, and I am so glad that the end was this spectacular. For all of its many flaws. I am truly going to miss this show, and it will always hold a special place in my heart. It was a beautiful send off to such a love-filled series.

And that’s the episode!
Overall, it felt like the focus of the episode was on clearing the air before the real fight begins. Everybody got their big moment of emotional catharsis. Luz got her Palisman, Hunter unlocked the magic of friendship Flapjack. And all of it is building up to the final battle against Belos.
The nature of that fight is gonna be interesting, because Belos has basically got two meat shields in front of him. None of our heroes want to hurt Raine, and the Collector still has a chance to learn to be a better person. So those are both obstacles that have to be dealt with before reaching Belos himself. And of course, none of that can happen unless they survive the “game” that the Collector comes up with. It’s gonna be a wild ride!
Overall this felt like a much more “complete” episode than the first one, if that makes sense. Thanks to Them used a whole lot of montage in its editing, and it was hard not to watch that and imagine it being stretched out into several episodes worth of story, but here it felt like the show said everything it needed to say.
Between the two episode titles, the theory I’ve seen is that the last one is going to be called “Everything and Everyone.” It’d fit in with the alliterative theme for the episode titles, and if you took the first word from each, they’d spell out, “Thanks For Everything,” which is a nice sendoff for the series.
The final episode of the Owl House will be airing in a couple months or so, and I’m very much looking forward to it! Cya then!

Uncle Belos is unhappy with Hunter.
Hunter is surprisingly chill with Kikimora considering she did try to kill him. Then again his Unca Belo nearly stabbed him in the face and he barely moved, so maybe he’s used to it. I am now picturing Hunter constantly dodging Belos’ outbursts and Kikimora’s increasingly convoluted assassination attempts and find myself slightly amused by it.
Anyways, here’s Hunter’s room.
We see several thick books, papers, notes and maps. On the left, leaning against the corkboard are at least two wooden staffs. On the wall next to the bed there’s what looks like some newspaper clippings, a flask of some yellow liquid, a shelf with some wooden carvings. Notably, there’s what looks a bit like a giraffe and… some doll. Above the bed, there’s some kind of diploma from the Emperor’s Coven. On the bed under his pillow we find… another Amphibia reference?
Huh.
I swear, the theories I’m gonna be able to make linking these two shows once I get around to watching Amphibia are gonna be wild.
His window is open, so the bird palisman can fly in and leave us with a somewhat happy ending.
Tumblr media
Called it
Well, ”happy” is maybe a too strong word to use, but, uh… it wasn’t all bad. There’s hope, as Hunter looks out through the window, perhaps glimpsing freedom lying there on the horizon. Be it that one day he can be that free, free as a bird.
Tumblr media
And with the conclusion of episode six we now have a bit more context for this image in the ending, showing the Golden Guard beginning to remove his mask.
As per usual, here are some things I missed or didn’t talk about initially:
•First off, and I can’t believe I forgot to mention this but Amity’s new hair is in the opening. It is honestly baffling to me that I forgot to check for that specific detail considering how big a deal it was in the previous episode. Similarly, I also forgot to mention Eda’s new dress that she got in episode four showing up in the opening. Whoops. •During the palisman adoption ceremony, the little red bird tries to escape through a hole in the enclosure, but Principal Bump puts it back. This shows the little rascal has a rebellious nature and that it craves freedom. And then it decided to bond with Hunter. Hmmmm…. •One of the kids at the palisman adoption ceremony is Viney from The First Day. In that episode, she wanted to study Healing and Beast Keeping. In this episode, she says she wants to open a veterinary clinic for mystical pets, a combination of the two magics. •I really like Luz pajama pants. They’re cute. •In past episodes, Luz has carried with her a seemingly endless pile of glyph cards already drawn and ready to go. But in this episode, she left those at home, which forced her to use the environment, like drawing glyphs in dirt or on a leaf. It’s an interesting twist and shows off just how clever and resourceful Luz can be. •I didn’t acknowledge GG licking Luz’ hand because I couldn’t think of a funny joke to make. •Speaking of which, I don’t think I mentioned just how funny I thought some of Golden Guard and Luz’ interactions were before Hunter decided he had Feelings to talk about. •Some of the animation on the… hand dragon thing when Kikimora is riding it looks a bit… rough. I point this out mainly because this show has very good animation in general so I’m wondering what happened for those few seconds. •Hunter has a scar on the cheek and a chunk missing from one ear. Considering the way Belos lashed out towards him at the end… it might be his fault. •Hunter also has these really dark bags under his eyes. He look more sleep deprived than Alador.
Overall, this was a very enjoyable episode! It helped set up some internal emotional conflict for Luz and it gave some supporting characters their palismen. We got to learn more about the Golden Guard, even learning his name and seeing glimpses of the conflict underneath the mask. We got see some intrigue within the castle, with conflict among the ones closest to Emperor Belos, ensuring that his plans do not go smoothly. We learned what the Day of Unity will entail and that the Coven Heads are in on it (and will likely be important later on). We learned Belos is suffering from some form of condition that transforms him into an uncontrollable beast unless he consumes palismen. We got some nice action and problem solving by Luz and that she will eventually get a palisman all her own.
A lot happened in this episode, is what I’m trying to say.
I wanna talk a little bit about masks. Masks are a reoccurring motif with characters associated with the Empire.
Regular goons, the guards and foot soldiers of the Emperor’s Coven are always seen wearing their masks, showing the Emperor have complete control over them. Lilith in season one sometimes wore a mask, but would more often than not abandon it, showing that while she was under the influence of the Emperor, she was not completely under his control. Kikimora doesn’t wear a mask, but keeps part of her face covered, perhaps indicating that while she works for the Emperor, she is not under his total control; as we see in this episode, she takes initiative and even tries to kill the Golden Guard. And the Golden Guard himself appeared to be the perfect obedient servant of the Emperor. In episode one we saw him follow his orders without hesitation or question. However, once his mask is knocked off in this episode, we start seeing the real him, the person beneath the mask. We see the golden Guard open up and talk as Hunter.
Just a thing I thought about.
One last thing: I mentioned that i already knew Hunter’s name. I didn’t know this was the episode it was revealed or how though, so that still came as surprise. One interesting thing I noticed though. As I watched the episode, I referred to him as Golden Guard, GG or Brass Watchman. But once he started opening up to Luz, I nearly slipped up a few times and almost called him Hunter (even though I wasn’t supposed to know that yet). That really does say it all, doesn’t it? The Golden Guard is a persona, a front, mask. The real person, the one we got to meet today was Hunter.
There’s a whole bunch of other stuff i could talk about, like Hunter and Belos relationship with each other and whether they’re actually blood related. But i’m afraid that if I start going down that path, I won’t be able to stop and it’ll just result in an incomprehensible wall of text. So this is where I’ll leave it off for now.
Until next time, take care of the planet Earth and remember that anything can happen in space!

 ꕥ  — IC INFORMATION;
name: hunter age: 17 pronouns: he/him series: the owl house canon point: post labyrinth runners app triggers: child abuse, child soldiers, familial abuse, death, genocide
  personality:
hunter is great at pretending to be confident and cocky, and can often seem smug and self-assured. as much is really only possible with a layer of separation between him and others, though, such as a mask, a title, or even just the confidence that he has to be correct.
once stripped of these things, though, hunter comes across much differently. he is desperate to please anyone who could affirm him, and is willing to go to extreme lengths in order to do so. any doubt in himself or his beliefs can send him into a panic, first responding with anger that eventually falls into pure anxiety.
when in an environment that supports him, he is excitable and passionate. it can take time for him to be comfortable enough to settle into that pattern, though, since he is usually very guarded and has been discouraged from nearly all his interests.
something your muse struggles with: finding meaning for himself outside of supposed purposes
your muse’s greatest strength: extremely loyal to those he loves
  history / background:
born a powerless witch, hunter was very young when he was taken in by his uncle, emperor belos, and given the training and resources of artificial magic to stand toe-to-toe with any other witch on the boiling isles. he was always told that it was wild magic that had destroyed their family, that left the two of them alone now, and that belos’s controlled forms of magic was the only safe way for them or any witch.
so, despite his own deep curiosity in wild magic, and quiet displeasure at some of his uncle’s methods, hunter was still proud to act as his right hand man as the golden guard.
until a human named luz came to the demon realm, and started making hunter question everything he knew.
as much as he would have liked to have dismissed her grievances with his uncle entirely, she and her friends continuously made points that he couldn’t fully ignore, shedding light on the parts of the emperor hunter had been avoiding looking at. this all came to a head when he and luz ended up inside belos’s mind itself, and the truth became impossible to not see.
inside his uncle’s mind, hunter learned three things. one, belos was just as evil as luz claimed, his every word a lie to manipulate the boiling isles under his will. two, belos had actually been a human himself, at one point, a witch hunter named philip wittebane who was close to finishing his greatest work after hundreds of years of working towards it. and three…
hunter was actually a grimwalker, a magical clone of philip’s older brother that had “betrayed him” by becoming close with a witch. the latest, in fact, in a long series of such clones, all of whom had been killed by the emperor once they all inevitably turned against him.
with this revelation, belos tried to do the same to hunter, but he and luz just barely managed to escape. he couldn’t be the golden guard then, couldn’t even go back to the castle, so he ran. ran, and eventually came to terms with the fact that he had dedicated his life to someone cruel and evil. ending up in the resistance against his uncle was just to be expected, by that point.
  powers / abilities:
(note: all the following powers are associated with flapjack, who is under items!)
flight: a palisman staff is capable of flight, with a witch easily able to ride along if they can keep their balance
dashing: a power that is halfway between super speed and teleportation, flapjack allows hunter to rush in any direction in a burst of golden light
energy blasts: magic blasts! they’re not more complicated than that
blocking energy: a staff can block incoming spells if positioned carefully
matter manipulation: briefly lifting and manipulating matter such as earth and water
inherent abilities:
flying: he’s actually actively good at flying with a staff! to the degree of sometimes doing so in obnoxious positions. he will stand on staffs sometimes.
agility: this boy knows parkour
combat: without inherent magic, pure combative skills are something hunter focused heavily on in training, and he is thus an expert in hand-to-hand combat
items / weapons:
flapjack: hunter’s palisman, a magical creature that can turn into a staff that has its own mystic properties that are accessible to their wielders
starting ability: flight
starting item: flapjack
  extra:
this clone boy will not stop having the worst imaginable days
  discord id: golden guard#6548
passcode: wemust place him in a school system

The Owl House Spoilers below!
-I really want that book King was reading. I hope that the show releases and art book or something like that some day.
-Okay petrification isn’t as horrific as being burned alive but still that’s terrible. It also might explain something I’ve noticed before. There are a lot of random statues around the island...
-“She’s my family.” 😭😭😭 King I love you.
-What the heck is with Belos’ staff? Did he eat his Palisman and make that? It looks more like a weapon which I guess it the point. How did it break through the Eda’s mind? Why does he want to have the portal?
-Luz going wild with the magic was amazing. Her righteous fury was great. She’s gotten so strong and smart. She was terrified when she first got here and now she’s taking down guards like a champ.
-Gus and Willow are like I said Ride or Die Friends.
-That last heart to heart with Eda killed me. “Us weirdos have to stick together.”
-“Talk to the Glyph Witch!” Kick her ass Luz!
-Wait Luz’s magic doesn’t work in the human world? But Lilith’s does? Boo.
-Smol!Eda awwwwww
-“I thought it was only for a day.” GIRL READ THE FINE PRINT! Also where did the curse come from???? Who has something like that for sale?
-Oh hi Belos.
-Eda was about to tear Lily apart for hurting Luz. She loves her so much!
-So Belos wants to unify the demon and human world is my guess. THEORY: He’s human and wants to go home but still keep his magic???
-I wonder who those 3 original witches that got turned into a petrification machine were orginally? For now on I think we have to look at every staue as a potential petrification victim. Including those giant ones like the one with the ax that almost crushed Luz.
-“The Titan has told me...” that right there proves to me the titan tells him nothing.
-Remember how I said Lilith was going to have to do some leg work for redemtion? Well she’s started at least. She has some work to make things up to Luz as well if you ask me.
-So the teacher becomes the mentor. It’s gonna be fascinating watching them discover more of the roots magic together. Like the old days I guess. Also note how the Bad Girls Coven now has three women of various ages in apprenance. A crone (sorry Eda 😰), a Maiden, and a mother...well Lilith isn’t very motherly so this kind of works?? Might be a strech. Also that night sky at the end was so pretty. This show is so pretty.
-So....how long before Camila realized Luz is gone? I feel like the portal thing can’t be fixed in a summer....Also explaining all of this to her mom is going to be wild.
-Who is that person in the mask??
I love this show so much. We still have so many questions. I can not wait for season 2.

that episode was a WILD ride but at least I get validation for Hunter not knowing how to use his palisman staff right away
