I have a weird Thing about my writing that was caused by an ex-friend from a former fandom who made a huge deal about Never Reading Anything, not even one-shots, if they were less than 10k words and her biggest pet-peeve was repeating a word or action "too much" which was often like... Happens more than once in less than 500 words...

And since then her super brutal "blunt" critiques of my writing have lived rent-free in my brain bc like.... I'm obvs not super prosey, I'm a dialogue writer. So it was hard to reach her standards for fic and for some reason I desperately wanted her approval 😩

I think it's also interesting to see how things change depending on the time in which they're being engaged with. so I see things about rose today that point out that she's written to be 19 when she meets the doctor and that's a big age difference (which... I understand the point is it's a big age difference because billie piper was 23 and eccleston was 40, and then dtennant was like 34/35 when he started which isn't so big of a shift but anyway the optics I get what people are getting at, but also I think it does oversimplify a lot of what's actually going on in the written dynamic, anyway-)

and also that the rtd run's Themes start coming together properly around s3 (although they are present from day one), and in some ways at this point, because nu!who has been running for... fuckn. actually quite a few years, which is wild to me as someone who started watching as a kid, and I wonder if classic!who fans felt the same way about their show and anyway -- she shifts from being Literally The First Companion You'd Seen For 17 Years (not counting the movie and fan things and the sketch) Who Was Defining A New Era For A New Generation to... a companion

comparable to other companions, comparable to the rest of the show

we sift through the writing to see what worked and what didn't (in our opinion), and we know how the ten-and-rose storyline Really ends, and how the ten storyline ends (sort, of because now that doctor and donna are Back), and we know what happens afterwards, and we talk about tenrose with a 2020s eye, and rose is "just" one of the people that travels with the doctor, one of several, and notably the one who gets most of the sunshiney doctor that buries a lot of the (wonderfully portrayed) angst of the latter half of the rtd show, and doesn't have as much lore as everything after that, so the story is "just" more simple overall

and to me she's kind of incapable of being just that. doctor who was still a risk that first season, it wasn't a done deal that it would have legs at all, never mind that it would continue for as long as it has. rose was created to be the Face of what nu!who was, moreso than nine/eccleston, because even with the extra angst and the eccleston gravitas, we know the doctor, the doctor is established, it's not actually the doctor that needs to sell what the new show is going to become and what the Feel of that new show is going to be (I mean, partly ofc, but-)

rose was doing so much heavy lifting and she succeeded! she was the face of who before dtennant or any other doctor or companion of his era and subsequent eras. she was created to appeal to a demographic of girls who wanted someone relatable in science fiction, because rtd wanted this to be for the girls, and billie piper came into it off the back of being a popstar and it changed her entire trajectory (for the better I think/hope -- there's a lot of bad shit in billie piper's past and I'm always sending her a fond thought)

nine/ten-and-rose were It! not calling it romantic or platonic or any secret third thing (haunting the narrative), but simply It! that's why it has so much staying power as a ship (which, my opinion on shipping has been somewhat *eh shrug* in later years, but in early-days when that was how you engaged with dynamics that got to you, of course it was going to be massive). it's so hard to properly describe how "for the time in which it was made" that this dynamic was written for, and how successful it was. it was rose that breathed doctor who -- and the doctor's character -- to life, as much as herself

she sets the stage for everything that comes next, both within and without the show proper

and I'm always so pleased that rtd at the time was thinking about what was needed to create this character and he opened with a shot from a girl on the estate with messy hair, clumpy eyeliner, and a minimum wage job, and went "that's the girl who's going to go on the adventure of a lifetime, that's the girl we're seeing the story through and relating to, because that's what girls (and uh... those who were girls at the time - and their parents and the boys) should be seeing."

I know rose isn't the first working class companion including classic!who, but she set the tone for nu!who and her family and background are important to why she is who she is, and is explored

"I've got no A-levels, no job, no future-" said the girl about to see the universe

she was very much for teenagers, and so she reads differently when you're an adult watching it back (much like those "teenager saves the world," novels you loved as a kid), but that's why she's 19 at the beginning. that's why she's billie piper (who does a perfect job). she was there to bring a new generation into this story, and it was perfect. and then she grows up. and we grew up. and she had adventures and it was brilliant and she survived and she made a life for herself. that's her story

car update

ok so i bought a subaru forester. now that i've bought one i see them everywhere. everyone is driving these cars.

i managed to find one that didn't have a power liftgate. which means it also, for some reason, doesn't have rear cross traffic alerts. but like. i never had those before so i don't super miss them. i just think it's wild that they bundled that with such an obnoxious feature.

It also has lane departure warnings and there's a super easy button you press to turn them off except it's not a physical toggle button so you press it and can't tell if it worked or not, and every time you turn the car off it re-sets to be on, so you don't realize the super distracting warning you hate is on until it goes off and super distracts you a lot and then in the midst of a tricky driving situation you're mashing the button to turn it off only you can't look so you're not sure if you missed it so you press it again and then it goes off later and you think you must've hit it twice so the next time you risk death to look at it and very carefully press it just once so it's definitely off this time, and then it goes off again later anyway, and anyway you give up on using the button and just grit your teeth because the thing is constantly beeping at you because it can't see the lane edges and freaks out. it is a useless feature, i have never once strayed from a lane and not known i was doing it, and if I were then a beep would not fix this. i want to find the wire that controls it and CUT IT but you of course cannot do that.

Anyway. As things go, not so bad really. I've been preoccupied with getting organizers and things and setting up the car interior to be nice, because I know from experience that one trip across the state where I'm having to half-unload and store things in there and shift everything out to make room for a thing and then load my life back into it, will mean that everything in the car is chaos and then I can't find the emergency equipment I know I have. I had a folding shovel in the Crosstrek, I bought it when the car was new, and was storing it in the rear driver's side footwell, and then when I needed it, well there was so much random bullshit in that car that I couldn't find it, and in fact I never found it, I sold the car without ever having found that folding shovel. So I bought a new one for this car, and I am sewing a seat-back organizer for the driver's seat, into which all of those things will go and then I will never remove them because I will not remove that seat back organizer because even if I have unexpected passengers or cargo surely a seat back organizer can be left in place.

This is my hope, anyway. We'll see. I'm finding myself without time to actually finish sewing the thing because shit keeps coming up. I thought it would take longer to get the car but no it just took up all of two days, and I have so much else to do around my house that I don't have time for anything else, so it's just as well I'd arranged to be off work this week too because I haven't had a moment to myself yet and probably won't at this rate but hopefully I can at least get my car set up.

I got the Most Boring Color; here's hoping I don't lose my nerve and do manage to find some artwork to have vinyl-wrapped onto the hood.

Suggestions welcome. Who could I commission, to do a fantasy-airbrush-style piece in wild colors? I want like a cool dragon or something, I really don't know beyond that. Probably the dealership will tell me not to because of the automatic lane-sensing cameras and things but like if they don't work maybe it will be time to cut the fucking wires so they stop beeping at me because they don't know where the lane markings are. IDK.

yeah for some reason the thing i'm most excited about is the moon roof, which is likely going to be the thing that breaks and makes this car terrible, but at the moment in the fading glory of autumn i just love it so much for some reason.

2 things remain: 1) I asked them if i could fit a full size spare in and they consulted and waffled and hemmed and hawed and finally said yes! you can! we'll just have to go over to the parts department and see about that! and then it was An Odyssey of multiple hours to get the car inspected (???) and registered and my insurance and whatever, and we didn't finish until nearly an hour after the dealership had closed, and I knew if I brought up the damn tire again somebody was going to cry, maybe me, so I didn't. but I have to call them... tomorrow now... and be like "so i was serious, also I want to discuss how to note this down in the maintenance logs so I get my rotations done five ways". and like, to be perfectly truly genuinely honest, it's not that I'm afraid I'll get stuck somewhere unable to drive, it is one hundred percent that I drive this car almost exclusively distances of 300 miles or more, and what WILL happen to me is that i get a flat as I get onto the highway or, better still, after I have gone maybe a hundred miles, and I can put the donut on but you cannot do highway driving for hundreds of miles on a donut, and so I will be stuck in fucking Utica or something and have to buy four new tires from literally wherever is open at the time and it will be a shitshow and it will be ten pm on a friday or something, and i absolutely will not do this.

So what will happen is, I will buy a spare fifth tire, I will at some point destroy one of my tires, and they'll say "ah you gotta buy four new ones" but i will say ha no i don't, and I will put the donut back in the trunk and store the spare rim somewhere until such time as I have yet another problem and then I will say, sadly, okay now I have to buy FIVE new tires, and will re-set. (This means that yes, then I will destroy a second tire on the Thruway near Nowhere at midnight on a Sunday, that's how it will go, but I will have put it off.)

2) I forget what 2 is. Oh yeah the fucking check from my fucking insurance. We floated the money to use as a down payment on this car, pulling it from some money we have earmarked but have not yet used for other things, and then the fucking check hasn't arrived yet, they claim to have mailed it on the sixth. So that's a headache. I just spent a thousand years combing through the website to see if there's a form where I can send a message to a person to ask them-- all the website says is "paid by check" but they don't mention mailing the check, so was there something else I was supposed to have done about it?

In the meantime, I got a loan from the dealership to finance part of the car purchase and while I am un-loan-to-able because my income is so wretchedly low, I was shocked to discover that somehow my credit score is insanely high, nearly perfect. Which is obviously meaningless because nobody will loan to me anyway. And it just highlights what a fucking stupid scam credit reports are. Because I have near-perfect credit, and am un-loan-to-able. Christ what a farce. (Dude co-signed, and the moment he appeared all communications were in his name, and the dealership texted me a request to leave them a review-- addressed to his name. On my phone! Which is the only contact info they have! Which is MY PHONE. It rankles! I'm going to leave them a good review but not until after I've calmed down about it. Come the fuck on.)

and one more thing b4 i move onto ep 6, i've already seen some ppl comparing what al did to husk in the hall to angel and val's dynamic, and while i do agree the two are both trapped in unsavory deals (loser, baby literally confirms this) i don't think al's ANYWHERE near as bad as val. was what he did fucked up? oh, yes, definitely. but it really?? shouldn't be surprising??? al's in hell ‘n has all this status for a reason, so i was really just waitin for a moment like that to happen. however, it didn't do any lasting damage. at least i really wouldn't say so. most it did was scare the shit out of husk for a minute, nowhere close to what val does to angel on the daily (see: episode 6). tho im willing to admit i might be lookin thru rose colored glasses bc i love al as a character. my opinion might change when/if the actual conditions of al and husks deal are revealed, but as of rn, i think al acted as he did there bc husk attacked a reeeally sensitive subject. he would've just been the petty bitch he always is if husk said like.. anythin else. oh and uhh yeah im abt 85% sure he and lilith have SOMETHING goin on. idk who the hell else would be powerful enough to have alastor on a leash

Also I cannot believe that Kiki has gotten to the point for me at least that I cannot forgive or understand her actions? She heard EVERYTHING from what we know, why did she treat Hunter that way?? Why has she not taken the many opportunities to right her wrongs?? Shes a complex character but she has lost her charm for me after that reveal. I wish she would have done something after learning things, realizing she was just going to be thrown out. The way she wanted to be the next Golden Guard EVEN AFTER knowing what happens to all of them?? Idk man

I do appreciate all the moments we got with all the side characters though! Darius protecting Eber just hhh he loves his feral dog man!! I’m so glad we got to see more on them even if it was small! I hope that someday we get to learn more about the little funny beast person. Their friendship is so intriguing and I wanna know how they met but sadly we might not get any of that :(

The interactions with Alador, I see a lot of people hate on him but I honestly think his story being rushed is what is making people see him in such a negative light. I def think he’s trying and he actually loves his kids, yes his actions previously won’t be forgotten but gdi hes t r y i  n g. I honestly dislike seeing everyone shitting on him. I have a dad that never tries and I’d give anything to have a second chance with him like their story is playing out.

Moving on, theres just so much man, the Raeda stuff was amazing, I love their connection and bond that Raine was fully ready to sacrifice themselves to protect Eda and that SCENE UGH. KILLS ME ;;

The ending had me shocked, King getting taken away had way too many parallels to the ending of season 1, GUS SOBBING BROKE ME, and I can’t even imagine how all the kids are feeling and Camila being thrust into all this like

just read Bukowski’s “Love is a Dog from Hell” and it made me think of some of your writing. Just because you used to sound like him at times. I think of “Had the realest dream we robbed a bank then escaped to spend it all for one night at the peninsula…” every once in a while. Just that phrase, really. It’s so beautiful. I’m not saying you remind me of an alcoholic madman like Bukowski, you sound a lot less old and drunk than him. But you have a kind of solitude and hunger that is similar to his. I hope you’re still writing and maybe publish something one day. I’d love to read it, ask for a signed copy.
