He, and some of his brothers, had just taken almost two dozen kids from their foster home after allegations of abuse, and he needed to finish the paperwork, but every time he starts, his gaze drifts to the chair across from his desk. To Yuu's chair. To the chair that they haven't sat in in over a week. In fact, he hasn't seen them at all in the last week, and it's beginning to get on his nerves. He taps his pen on his desk even faster, his scowl becoming darker as he thinks about just how long it's been since he's seen his...er...Yuu. "Commander?" Thorn opens the door just a crack, and winces at the look on Fox's face, "Sorry for bothering you, but the Social Worker is here, and he want to talk to you." "...fine. Send him in." "Yes, sir." Thorn pauses, "Are you alright, Fox?" "I'm fine." "Would you like me to go and check on Yuu?" Fox glowers at his brother for a whole thirty seconds, and becomes annoyed when he sees that Thorn isn't fazed at all, "...yes, I would." "See, was it that hard to ask?" Thorn asks as he backs out of the room before he pushes Fox too far. "The Social Worker will be up shortly. "Fine." Fox replies turning his attention back to his paperwork. He can't think about Yuu right now...even though they're not answering their comms, and even though they haven't been seen at the senate building in days. They're fine. It's fine. Everything is fine.

i need ghoap frantically making out against a door finally taking the leap on their feelings. need ghost grinding against soap, expecting to find him just as hard as him, only to feel nothing

and in all his wisdom and experience, he concludes soap was tortured and never told him

As much as I adore conlangs, I really like how the Imperial Radch books handle language. The book is entirely in English but you're constantly aware that you're reading a "translation," both of the Radchaai language Breq speaks as default, and also the various other languages she encounters. We don't hear the words but we hear her fretting about terms of address (the beloathed gendering on Nilt) and concepts that do or don't translate (Awn switching out of Radchaai when she needs a language where "citizen," "civilized," and "Radchaai person" aren't all the same word) and noting people's registers and accents. The snatches of lyrics we hear don't scan or rhyme--even, and this is what sells it to me, the real-world songs with English lyrics, which get the same "literal translation" style as everything else--because we aren't hearing the actual words, we're hearing Breq's understanding of what they mean. I think it's a cool way to acknowledge linguistic complexity and some of the difficulties of multilingual/multicultural communication, which of course becomes a larger theme when we get to the plot with the Presgar Translators.

#imperial radch #also a great example of the 'you don't have to be Tolkien' phenomenon #if you want to think about linguistic differences by building all the languages in your setting #and being able to explain what those differences are through actual texts in the language in question #that's AWESOME #but it's not the only way to do it #it's also interesting because of course this style only works in book form #everyone's speaking different languages but in a written account they're all 'translated' for you #but of course if it was a TV series they would all have to be speaking a language the audience understands #(or you *would* have to go wild with conlangs) #and i think that's really cool as well-- #how for a series where song is so central we don't actually hear any of the actual in-universe words or any of the music #it's all been filtered #and again you know this is happening but seeing the examples of how real songs--the shape hymns and 'L'homme Arme'--are presented #makes you a lot more viscerally aware of how limited your perspective is #it's good #ann leckie i love you

So when Aziraphale and Crowley switch and they get ice creams, Crowley ends up with a vanilla cone with a flake and Aziraphale gets a red popsicle(I don’t know what it’s called in other places sorry). Why?

I would like to propose that it doesn’t matter who gets what, because Aziraphale orders both. Crowley gets whatever Aziraphale wants, because he’s going to give it to him anyway. In the book, there’s a similar situation with Angels food cake. Crowley orders it then eats a bite and gives it to Aziraphale. If both of the ice creams are for Aziraphale, then he mostly gave Crowley the vanilla cone w/ a flake for aesthetics
