Cheerful Oblivion
Thought that I was hungry for love… Maybe I was just hungry for blood. **********
I met a woman in a club once. Years ago. Can’t get her out of my head. If I didn’t still have the napkin with her number on it… Well. Would’ve been easy to assume I dreamed the whole thing up.
It was a miserable night to be out. Rain was coming down in buckets, flooding the streets. Could almost hear it over the music, pelting the roof. But there she was. Filling the entire doorway. No coat. No umbrella. Nothing but a black tank top and jeans that looked too tight to be comfortable. Soaked to the bone, dripping wet, faded blue-raspberry-bright hair plastered to her neck. She looked like she’d dragged herself straight out of the ocean. In hindsight, maybe she had.
********** England is only ever gray or green. The girls glitter, Striding glorious and coatless in the rain. I remember falling through these streets, Somewhat out of place, if not for the drunkenness… It makes my chest hurt to think of it, Not of regret, but of missing that… …cheerful oblivion… **********
I remember the way she stood there, caught under spotlight rays of blue and green, the rain on her face sparkling like diamonds… She looked like an angel. Could’ve been. Probably wasn’t. More than likely…something else.
She didn't belong there. In the club. I don’t mean that in a judgmental way. Maybe philosophical. She didn't really seem like she belonged anywhere. But I could see it in her eyes, almost fluorescent blue under the lights. To her, it didn’t matter where she belonged. What mattered was where she wanted to be. And she wanted to be there. In that club. On that night.
I’d never been afraid of being noticed by a beautiful woman. I craved it. Don’t we all? This was different. She was different. Never felt my blood run colder than the second our eyes locked. It felt like being hunted.
********** It was not all pain and pavement slick with rain, And shining under lights from shitty clubs, And doing shitty drugs, And hugging girls that smelled like Britney Spears and…coconuts… **********
She flowed through the crowd like water, parting the proverbial sea, leaving a wake of awestruck stares. If she knew she was the center of attention, she didn’t care. She was a full head taller than anyone else, a titan amongst mere mortals. Muscles rippled when she moved. Wet skin shimmered. I tried not to stare, I really did. Couldn’t help myself. I could’ve watched her for days.
She swept ashore at the bar, smelling like petrichor and oil slicks. Ordered a drink. Smiled down at me, sitting so small a million miles beneath her. There was nothing human about that razor-sharp flash of teeth.
She asked if I wanted another drink. Hadn’t realized I’d finished the one in my hand. I nodded. Couldn’t find my voice. Tab’s on me, she’d said. Not here for long, least I can do. After tonight, you’ll never see me again.
********** And with your mermaid hair and your teeth so sharp, You crawled from the sea to break that sailor’s heart. You only get one night upon the shore, So dance like you’ve never danced before. And the dance floor is filling up with blood, But, oh Lord, you’ve never been so in love… **********
I asked her where she was from. She laughed, a harsh bark of a thing that ripped out of her throat like it hurt. Nowhere. I asked for her name. She didn’t answer. But that animal grin flashed back, a bright white scar across her face. For no reason, I thought about moths. And flames.
We stopped talking. Kept drinking. Started dancing. God, the way she moved. Like a machine. Like a predator. Like a ballerina. Equal parts precision, power, beauty.
I couldn’t keep up. She didn’t seem to care. I was a prop. A plaything. An entertaining little toy, something to keep her distracted. From what, I didn’t know. But it didn’t matter. It felt like an honor.
********** And the mermaids they come once a year, They climb the struts of Brighton Pier, They come to drink, they come to dance, To sacrifice a human heart. And the world is so much wilder than you think. You haven’t seen nothin’ ‘til you seen an English girl drink… **********
I do still see her. Sometimes. In my dreams. In those hazy amber-clad memories. It’s hard to know what was real. Don’t know who she was. Or what she was.
Never did call that number. Not sure she’d really wanted me to. Probably for the best. I get the feeling that if we’d been in that club alone together… She would’ve eaten me alive.
And I think I would've let her.

i do love canon amy & rory but god, does some part of me wish they really had gone with the idea of the doctor picking up a child as a companion (and then later, that child’s best friend with a huge crush on her.) with the rest of the season really not changing at all, except now it’s amelia pond with an angel in her head killing her and lost alone in the woods. it’s little rory who dies and is forgotten and becomes a toy soldier. if this is going to be a fairy tale, then let it be one. children have never been safe in fairy tales.
#it wouldn’t have to change any of the actual plot of the season. except MAYBE amy’s choice but even then i think amy’s choice would be the#one episode where they should be adults. if only for the half where they live in a village in that dream.#because that’s the kind of future that children would dream up. they live in a little cottage and nothing ever goes wrong and their best#friend visits them all the time even though they’ve grown up.#they aren’t actually adults there just children with an idea of what they should be as adults and acting accordingly#and it would still end the same way.#but idk its just. rory’s 2000 years waiting for amy inside the pandorica is already tragic. yes.#now imagine its a kid. a kid in a little roman soldier helmet who will never grow up. who will not leave his best friend.#he loves her and she’s more important than the whole universe and that sort of love is supposed to MEAN something in a fairy tale!#its supposed to melt the ice out of hearts and transform people from stone.#and what that love means here. is that he will have to wait 2000 years. a child and a box.#little rory and the amelia who followed the doctor’s letters to the pandorica. and she doesn’t recognize him again.#and amelia in the pandorica… 2000 years a child trapped in a small box waiting to be rescued.#s5 is already fucked for them but it could be worse. it could be so much worse.#and it would make the doctor choosing to take her place in the pandorica to save the universe later even better.#because who else but the doctor would put the fate of the universe on the shoulders of two children and realize much too late what a#monstrous thing he’d done. and still have to hope. have to hope. that amelia would remember him fondly enough to bring him back to reality.#the logistics of all of this would have been a pain lmao. child labor laws in acting and all that.#BUT. hypothetically. it would have slapped.#doctor who#amy pond#rory williams#<- also this entire time ive been referring to him in my head as rory pond so much that i fuckin. forgot his actual last name.#and then like if you want them to be adults in s6 or whatever you can just timeskip to them getting married and still have amelia remember#the doctor there. it would work. it would.#amelia pond au

I'm so excited for my D&D campaign
#i ran one in this world for two and a half years where everything is ravaged by dragons#but now theres been a somewhat revolution because one of the only surviving major cities was impulsively conquered by my players#so things have been shaken up a lot and now they have a holiday because they brought i think three gods to earth at once#two of my players became the vessels of the gods of light and darkness and duked it out and fast forward a year or two#and their hold on the economic powerhouse of the continent is solidified and they have partnered with an organization#that specualizes in magical artifacts from every concievable reality#and my NEW campaign is people hired by this organization#The Forge of Wonders#they have this entirely greyed out library full of strange books that when you pick them up gain color and you can read their spines#and these books are stories. theyre fairy tales. theyre pirate adventures. theyre dragon babysitting. theyre demon apocalypses.#and these stories are worlds. theyre stories in truth. and my players have been hired to dive into the stories and retrieve Thing#for the forge of wonders#which means i get to make WHATEVER THE FUCK I WANT BITCHES#i get to be so fucking impulsive with my story crafting#and im not going to balance anything correctly. theyre just going to have to assume from the summary in the front page if its doable#demon apocalypse? probably outside of our level. gnome tinkerers? probably not too bad#and ill have prebuilt stories and something theyre taked with retrieving and they get to choose which onr yhey do#anyways the forge of wonders started as a magic shop that only accepted platinum (1000 gold) as currency so they did a lot of shopping ther#i just took that old document full of crazy magical items and i tweaked it and molded it and added to it and the new version is 33 pages 🥰#thats what ive been doing at work the past three days lol#dnd#my dnd

How many times do I have to learn the lesson that I should start the story when the story starts instead of trying to tack on introductory worldbuilding?
Seriously. My instincts about when to start the story are almost never wrong. But I always assume the first scene in my imagination requires set-up that people outside of my imagination don't have. So I tack on an intro to set the mood and to set up the plot and characters and world. And it's boring. When I should have just started where I wanted to start so I could weave explanations into a scene where things are actually happening.

Of course the sequel to Out of the Tomb would be a vocation story. Tanza's let go of sin and embraced virtue. Naturally, the next part of her story would involve her figuring out what she's going to do with her particular gifts and interests. Especially if what she should do doesn't necessarily line up with what she'd want to do if given the choice. With all the crazy political stuff bringing in questions of duty and image and danger, it's the perfect fit. I can't believe I didn't figure it out before.
#adventures in writing#arateph#i hesitate to actually write this story#too often a sequel can ruin a story#and it's been far too long for me to have an audience for it#yet#i've finally arranged these pieces into a coherent story#figured out how to integrate the personal and the political#figured out how to make the fairy tale fit in well#figured out what she'd do in the flabby middle part of the story#(and it's something that makes me really excited on a theme and worldbuilding level)#and now the discussion of christian character arcs brought this to mind again#and it could be *so* intriguing#with all the presidential posts i've been making was longing to write a story with a political aspect#and then remembered i've got a whole universe with the craziest political situation#and an every(wo)man hero who wants nothing to do with it but still gets caught up in it#i could write all sorts of crazy meta posts about arateph's post-auren-resurrection politics#there are so many big issues tied up in this one person and how does he handle that???#just want to keyboard smash about my own characters#i was content with leaving this universe behind but every time i think that it bludgeons me from behind#and this is the first time i think i have a story that's worthwhile as a retelling *and* a standalone arc#and i don't know what to do with it#(probably wait 2.5 days for the feeling to pass)#but if anyone's up for me yelling in their dms please let me know#(i never know whether to post these types of things on this blog or the writing blog)#(but i figured i've talked enough about arateph on the main blog to put it here)#(there's an intricate calculus behind these decisions apparently)#(for better or worse this doesn't feel like a writing blog post)

You know, I find it incredibly funny that most villains get a backstory to show how tragic and sad and sympathetic they are. But the writers looked at Qiao Jin and went, "Oh, we can use his backstory to make him WORSE." In exchange, the Li twins got the brunt of the tragedy and man are they really going through it

still reeling from the one agent saying they want "subtle" fairy tale retellings like Cinder, and idk if we're thinking about the same Cinder there are literally quotes from the og fairy tale before the corresponding chapters?????? so you know exactly where we are in the plot??????
#rose and rambles#i will probably delete this one later but like??????????#like??????????????????????#i would not describe that one as subtle#it is different and imaginative because it takes place in a sci-fi dystopian future BUT IT IS LITERALLY#A CINDERELLA STORY?!?! AND DOES NOT LET YOU FORGET IT FOR ONE MOMENT????#im pretty sure it has the quotes from the fairy tale i might be misremembering but the Cress one does for sure#like the chemical makeup is just full on the fairy tales i feel like if you want subtle it would have to be like#less obvious that it's a retelling? like just echoes of the key moments or imagery#but Cinder by Marissa Meyer is so fully cinderella even in the different genre#im going to be so stupidly bitter about this BUT IM RIGHT#whats also funny is the agent could be talking about a different cinder idk#she diDN'T PUT THE AUTHOR but the one by Marissa Meyer is popular and the only one i know at the top of my head#subtle#that was not the word you were looking for i think#just to be clear i love cinder and the lunar chronicles so so so so much#but THEY ARE WHOLE-HEARTEDLY FAIRY TALES#EMBRACE IT????? PLEASE?????#the only subtle retelling example i can think of is Ella Enchanted or Fairest#both by Gail Carson Levine. More so Fairest because it's like one specific moment where the apple comes in that you're like oooooooooooh#this is snow white#but Ella Enchanted is more like Cinderella i think it would be hard to not see the parallels#Cinderella is hard because you just need a mean stepmom and two stepsister and that's an instant give away#but Ella Enchanted has its own Vibes that it comes off as its own thing ya know ya know?

... I really gotta stop coming up with wildly ambitious AU ideas.
#my posts#HEAD IN HANDS.#it's a much darker flavored Deltarune AU. similar vibes to Lynxgriffin's Eldritchrune. everything and everyone is terrifying#but it's fae and grimm's fairy tales instead of demons.#like. DANGEROUS fae. don't give strangers your name.#a world where magic is real and it hunts you in the night.#i'm currently calling it 'Changeling AU' and it's a bit unhinged#the 'kris' of that world is a fae changeling that was abandoned after their parents realized they weren't really their child :')#so the Dreemurrs took them in... even knowing what they are.#meanwhile the real HUMAN Kris was being raised by fae in the Other World so they're BOTH very weird and feral#i haven't figured out all the details but i know they find each other because the human Kris escaped and is trying to get home#while the changeling Kris is trying to figure out these strange and terrifying doorways that are appearing around town#not really realizing what's going on and that someone on the other side is knock knock knocking... :) they want out.#and of course i'm sure that goes MEGA bad because Kris realizes they were /replaced/ and this THING took their life#because they don't Get that Changelings have no idea they're not human and have no ill intentions. they're just Weird#the Changelings of this AU are meant to be a 'gift' by the fae; a 'perfect' child born from hopes and dreams for the future#they're very uncanny but don't have much magical ability on their own and are the closest to human that fae can get#since they're a fae specifically born from human feelings. it makes them a bit of a halfling in a sense.#Changeling Kris might even be actively benevolent... having witnessed Dess getting Taken and wanting to rescue her...#they just weren't expecting to find TWO lost kids in the dark.#anyway. it's a hellish AU and i'll probably never complete it#but god i just needed to ramble for a sec there lol#ROLLS AWAY BACK INTO THE VOID

turning the bizarre image of angry, vengeful 1983!bj feeding what i am almost certain is a hallucination of his child self a wedge of orange around in my head today.
#it's so strangely uncomfortable yet sweet and i can't pinpoint why.#there's a coldness in that scene and idk if it's coming from how bj interacts with him (*making* him eat the orange)#or how he imagines a hollowness in little barry from the moment he sees him. or if it's bc before we can even assume barry isn't real#we know bj is there to visit his mum and he's getting angrier and more unstable the closer he gets to his old home.#it's like. even though i don't think bj would be violent toward a child... something puts me on edge.#it's like it feigns warmth (feeding him. offering him his band badge. trying to make a connection?) but there's just emptiness. it's cold.#(barry vanishes inexplicably when bj attacks his mum btw and his mum doesn't mention him *once* so it leads me to believe he wasn't real.)#(also the comment about ghosts seems two-fold: mrs. anderson thinking bj has been dead all this time and barry being a 'ghost' in bj's head#but like. idk. that scene is so weird. the way bj interacts with what must be himself. it teeters between trying to be kind and#seeming to almost dislike/hate what he sees.#film!bj is interesting to me at that stage but i want to pick book!bj's brain more. i don't understand him much at all.#again tho. none of this *really* has any bearing on my portrayal since i'm more film-based. but still. turning it around.#wondering if there's anything to pick from it.#wondering if... bj hates his child self? probably a bit. probably... could at least learn to be gentler with himself.#hm.#out of fairy tales [ooc];#sorry putting on my clown nose again.

why do culturally christian americans think it's okay to rewrite the mythology of cultures that have nothing to do with them to make them fit their ideals
#i see this done SO much to jewish culture both from actual practicing christians and pagans & atheists that were raised christian#like they seem to have that same belief of superiority over judaism and other religions more broadly#like folks appropriating lilith to girlbossify her#or rewriting every single greek myth again to girlbossify or generally give them modern politics & morals#for a while people were also doing it with like. old european fairy tales.#like remember that post that was like what if red riding hood was hijabi? like bro. have you considered maybe looking into actual#traditional muslim stories rather than slapping a muslim character over another culture and calling it a muslim story?#and there were various replies to that post. and these were clearly people with disney brainrot who wanted more diverse stories#but weren't willing to actually go look for them and would have rather slapped a different culture on a character who is still#fundamentally european. like. idk this is a whole thing.#like i kinda feel this way even towards disney's princess & the frog. there was an actual african version of that story. don't get me wrong#i liked it. and i don't have any say on whether or not it's good rep. because i'm not african american#like i like that it's an adaptation put into a different setting and different time period. but there was still already an african version#of the fairy tale. am i making sense#i don't even know if this has a name. idk if it can be classified as cultural appropriation. it's similar?#anyway. i hate this whole phenomenon.

you like to say you’d help the old woman in the ones who begs for just a moment’s rest at your fire, and perhaps just a morsel of food, if you could spare it, she can’t pay you back with money nor jewels but it would be awfully kind if you wouldn’t mind
you like to say that you’d be the one to help her, to split your sandwich in half, but that is because you already Know that she is the witch or the fae or the empress or the goddess in disguise and you know that at best you’re getting a pretty sweet gift out of this encounter, and at worst things could go Very wrong for you if you are not polite at least, you and i Know this already and so we say that yes, yes, of course we’d be the one to help, of course we wouldn’t make the mistakes of the stories because we wouldn’t be cruel, it’s about mercy really, helping a person in need if you have enough, that is merciful
but did you have this same mercy when you lit ants on fires with magnifiers and stomped on their castles (hills) with bare feet on hot summer days, did you have this mercy for the roach in their motel (prison) who’s family lineage probably has more generations who’ve called that place home than you, did you have the same mercy for the hornets who’s apartments (nest) you drenched in poison in the wee morning hours, when you couldn’t even face them with dignity?
did you?
i didn’t think so
