So uh. My freelance work here is kind of dying.
I thought i'd keep my long-term followers on the know-how, so i might as well write about my current circumstances here, give y'all an update, so to speak.
So, for several reasons, most of them not even my fault, i've been getting less and less commissions, almost none, actually, and the ones i get are usualy on the cheaper side, which is bad concidering that this is my livelihood, commission money pays my bills, my groceries, and my taxes, and now i sure as hell am strugling to imagine this will sustain me for long.
Twitter is a sinking ship ever since elon went over, Specificaly for people like me. I had just broken into 12k followers there, a huge milestone for me, and then i got shadowbanned, and for the last few months i've gotten *nothing*. It's completely dead, i'm stagnated there, all my arts are censored, and there's no way for me to undo it or fix it, and so i've gotten less and less comms out there, which sucks because its the only reason i was even on that stupid site.
Here on tumblr, meanwhile, the CEO went on a massive transphobic streak, and a lot of lgbt folk (which composed a lot of my following,) decided to jump ship, and i sure as hell dont blame them, but sadly that's more potential costumers that bailed, and there's no proper website to go to.
Anywhere i'd go, i'd be starting from scratch again, which would be utterly disheartening and frustrating, and there no website that is kind to artists, with no algorythim, that also have a messaging system (the latter being ESSENTIAL to the way i do comms) So i'm kind of stuck. I just. have nowhere to go, and nothing to do.
And last but not least, my own fault, I've just been drawing and creating what *I* specificaly want, on an hedonistic streak this year. That's why theres so much pony bs on this blog now, and why i was straight up posting poetry a while back, and have written hundreds upon hundreds of fanfiction pages in the last few months; Which, unfortunately, is a terrible business decision if your intent is making money. Which I surely should have prioritized, but in the end, its not up to me, its up to the costumers...
So now i'm a bit stuck. I've enjoyed the things ive drawn and written more than anything i've ever done, and yet, i've never been less successful on the actual business side.
I'm still considering my venues, my possibilities, but there's not many. Trying to get a job would certainly pull me away from creation, and i'd hate it regardless of what it was, and on another venue, theres no guarantee that going back to furry titties would bring me money.
and that's whats heartbreaking about it too. no matter how much effort i put on my work, theres no guarantee of sucess, so why even spend time trying to craft a masterpiece?
why not just follow trends and make a tiktok account or whatever the fuck makes money these days. I'd rather not, frankly. And i wont.
Well, that's about it. Thanks for reading this update, that's how my life is goin atm. i'm going to continue doing as i am right now, but yknow...
I'm not sure what i should do, if you want to give me suggestions, feel free.

Hello!! I don't have twitter or Patreon... it would be awesome if you could answer my question! You seem such a kind person in every response.
I saw here and there pictures of IvanTill (Au?) where they are on the seashore... What's the story behind it? I never had the chance to find it out even if I'm not new in this fandom...
Thank you so much and sorry for disturbing you! I love your page... 🍡
Hello!! I believe you mean these ones, yes?
I'm pretty sure they're drawn by one of the ALNST crew members! It was on their site, but the last time I checked, they locked it and now it can only be accessed with a password...
Unfortunately I wasn't part of the fandom when this first started circling around, so I'm not entirely sure of the context. Some people say these were scrapped storyboards for one of the rounds, and that it was initially supposed to center around Ivan and Till's relationship.
Personally I think otherwise, though. I feel like this could just be the crew artist experimenting with their dynamic, or drawing art for a normal highschool AU like many ALNST official arts tend to be set in. Their clothes seem to be very average school uniforms, and the whole vibe of the scene seems so carefree in the more mundane, realistic way. Or maybe these are actually the storyboards? I'm not new to the fandom either, but even I can't find a solid confirmation yet, haha....
These still make my heart hurt, though. The both of them playing in the water, Till's blushing face, Till on his tippy-toes. He's tip-toeing for the kiss. How I wish they could be happy in another universe.
Thank you for your kind words! Sorry I couldn't properly answer your question...

this is probably the singular post where i hope most to be wrong.
I hope I'm called alarmist, paranoid, and proven wrong - but privately, i am deeply concerned about pixiv's latest ToS change regarding kink work banned in the US/UK.
It's not *specifically* about pixiv or this *specific* TOS change. This is not about how easy it is to change region-lock or use a VPN. (There's always going to be higher-friction ways around.)
It's a strong bellwether for how jittery international companies feel about legal (if theoretically tasteless*) visual art in the US. Particularly kink work.
Personally?
I fully expect itch.io to have to ditch NSFW or fold within two years. I fully expect depiction of certian taboo kink art to be semi-illegal (whether in select states or de-facto illegal within five years; lolisho being the first one on the line as always).
I fully expect most major internet hosting services to start running similar kink detection software to tumblr, to deter the workaround of an indvidual site as hosting it. Much like the wild west internet where you used to find extremely graphic content, I am seeing kink art slowly being neutered from the "mainstream" sites to formerly "safe" sites to the infrastructure of the internet itself.
There's some changes to my site and shop I'm making some increased haste with in hopes of hardening and beating this like I did with the social media implosion a few years ago. If you haven't already mass-saved kink work from your favorite creatives, or ordered that r18 doujin, I would suggest you do it soonest.
This is the kind of post I'd post on my private journal, not here, because I'm flatly uninterested in getting into semantics debates. The sole reason I'm posting this here is as another gentle but insistent nudge to set up your own backup infrastructure, if you are a kink creative too.
I hope I'm proven wrong.
But personally I am treating this as a very critical canary in the coal mine.
* I use the word tasteless deliberately to remove the "moral" (and legal) aspect of the intent and to hammer home the subjective quality of judging and creating visual art. What could be tasteful to one person is tasteless to another is tasteful again (and perhaps both at the same time) and that's one of the many beauties of humanity.

what bothers me about tumblr some times is how many of the posts on here are like, Nothing. often just memes that arent particularly funny or twitterbrained people wasting time arguing online (truly like. just looking for someone they feel they're allowed to be cruel to and suspiciously never selecting any of the of Zionists on here).
people can do whatever they want but i wish they would spend more time sharing art and helping others on here. i've said it before but i really do not vibe with this site's "culture"

Before your art gained more traction, how did you deal with not having much interaction/many views of your art? I understand that art isn't just for an audience, but it can be frustrating when only a few people see something you've worked on!
Never really had that problem to be honest when I started posting my art to tumblr most of it was getting like 40 to 500 notes which I was ecstatic about bc it definitely didn't deserve that but it was also 2017/2018 and easier to get notes - if you want some advice tho on how to get more notes on your art - play to bigger fandoms and try to be funny/creative/funny and creative - your trying to get people to reblog your art which is way harder now then it used to be but from my experience people are more likely to reblog art if its funny or part of an interesting au

y'know, I've been seeing a lot more posts talking about how fanfic, specifically, puts characters into boxes and takes away the nuance of them, and while I think that's an important discussion to have, I also find it quite perplexing? Like, these posts seem to come from people who don't even, or maybe very rarely, consume fics in the first place, and I say that because, if you do consume fics semi-regularly, you kind of learn? how to gage what the stories and characterisation are going to be like based on the tags and summary? Sometimes, you do have to step into the fic to figure it out, but it hardly takes very long to realise if it gels with you or not. Idk, it's not anything serious or important, but it does give me... "girl, what were you doing at the devil's sacrament" vibes, you know?

I love posts joking about the “no mecha no furries” on most people’s commission info and how the artists who do draw one of those have to pick one or the other, as both a furry artist and a mecha artist it makes me feel powerful jdfgjsdg

I'm sorry Neil, although I love your writing and agree with your opinions on most subjects I have to disagree with you on the writers' strike. No-one should have a more privileged life as a result of being clever and creative. I worked from the age of 15 to the age of 65 in low-paid jobs, taking 1 year off to go to drama school and 3 years off to get a fine art degree. I worked in terrible but necessary jobs, labouring, stacking boxes, unloading trucks, running errands, filing, going to work on a bicycle at all hours of the day and night on shift work in all kinds of weather. Even when I was a student I was still working in part-time cleani8ng jobs and even during periods of unemployment I worked in volunteer jobs for charities and social services.
According to Mensa I have an IQ of 160 and according to Plymouth University I have a BA hons in Fine Art but I cannot accept the idea that writers and other creative people should avoid normal jobs like driving an "Uber" or working in an office/shop/factory/construction site. To accept that idea would be to create a new aristocratic class when we should abolishing the old princes and aristocrats.
What we need, I feel sure, is a redistribution of labour so that everybody who can do so would spend some time each year in blue collar work and everybody who can would get higher education and a chance to make art of one sort or another.
The idea of doing other jobs to supplement writing or drawing shouldn't be seen as a terrible thing, a punishment or a suffering. Sharing the jobs around should be seen as normal.
I mean, I've done my half century of sweat labour and it didn't hurt me too much. I'm retired now and still making art of various kinds and I've never asked anyone to pay me for any art piece I've made. making art, writing, drawing etc. is the fun stuff which we get to do in exchange for the blue collar stuff which puts food on the table.
The worst pop song ever written was Sting/Dire Straits song "Money for Nothing" which ridicules the working class from a position of educational privilege.
So what's my question? My question is: What's wrong with a writer doing other jobs to make ends meet? Sounds perfectly fine to me.
Nothing's wrong with a writer doing other jobs to make ends meet. Writers and artists have been doing that since the dawn of time. Actors too.
But by the same token, there's nothing right about assuming that writing isn't a blue-collar job, or that writers and other people who make art can only make it for love and that thus they need other jobs to subsidise their craft.
I like living in a world in which the people who make the things that make the world worth living in get paid for their work. For me, that includes the people who make films and TV, books, art and music and comics.
Having spent a lot of time on film and TV sets, it's a blue-collar world on set, and everyone is working long and hard to make the shows you love. I'm never going to suggest that the riggers or the gaffers or the make-up team or the focus-pullers should drive ubers in order to have the privilege of being on the set and working there.
Or to put it another way, from the most blue-collar writer I ever knew...
