#that's why i need a list of good japanese films
Text
Rose Recaps 2023 - Japan
So, because I have a hard time making big lists and choosing favourites, this my version of a superlative post, by country.
The one that had me at the first frame
If It’s With You | Kimi to Nara Koi wo Shite Mite mo
Tumblr media
As soon as Amane appeared on screen I was gone. This damaged but confident boy had my heart from the beginning. But it was Ryuji that ended up with a bigger piece by the end. The way he saw Amane’s mask from the beginning and just went – “you don’t need to do that with me”. And the way he considered Amane’s feelings even when he wasn’t sure what to do or how to respond, or how he was feeling about all of it, was just beautiful to witness and at certain points kinda reminded of Ida.
Favourite Moment: Amane confessing and running away. Because visually it's so striking. The way he's running from the light that is Ryuji.
The one that was perfect and I never saw coming.
I Cannot Reach You | Kimi ni wa Todokanai
Tumblr media
I think that by now at least some people know how I feel about Japanese BL. I love it so much. And for me it’s always about the characters. Whether they are the embodiment of chaos, like Aoki or they are just incredible complex and empathic humans like Ida. - Yes, I’m using Kieta Hatsukoi every chance I get- I just love the way all these characters are written and portrait.
I loved these 2 boys in equal measure all throughout the show. I might have a soft spot for Yamato, but that’s only because pining boys are my weakness.
Yamato’s back and forth in his own head about what to do would be annoying to me in any other show, but it was so well done, and we were privy to his thought process throughout that it just made me feel for him deeply. And Kakeru learning about Yamato’s feelings right away in the first episode was a great choice, because he gave the show time to make the reciprocity more believable.
Favourite Moment - The exchange of gifts at the door. I love the nervousness that the two of them are feeling in this moment.
The one where I gave in.
My Beautiful Man S2 & Eternal
Tumblr media
Confession time. This was not love at first season for me. I don’t argue quality overall and much less the acting of the show, but it just didn’t click for me.
There were some truly great moments in the first season but there was a disconnect between my heart and my brain. This happens to me sometimes. Like I watch something that is objectively good but it doesn’t reach me.
That all changed with the second season and the film. I finally connect with Hira. Don't ask me why, I don't fully understand myself, but it happened right at the beginning of the season. I think perhaps it was because I started seeing more from Kiyoi pov, because before I was absolutely clueless about what he saw in Hira in the first place. Sorry if that sounds harsh.
I don't blame the show for this, as I said, I think all the elements are there, it just didn't connect for me.
Also, the film was gorgeous to watch. Several moments (specially the sequence where the gif is from) were so well shot and edited that I'm happy I went in already with a positive mindset.
Favourite Moment: The one from the gif. I'm a sucker for a drastic visual change when the moment calls for it.
The one that had me question if watching it was good for my mental health.
Tokyo in April is | Shigatsu no Tokyo wa
Tumblr media
Ok. I love this show. I love Ren. But this was a hard watch for me. Every week I had a struggle between two sides of me.
- Don’t watch it. It will be sad and you will be sad because of it. - But the last one was sad so I need to watch it to see if there’s happy. - Why not just wait? - Because I started already, so now I can’t wait. - But in this case binging is best. Cause for sure the ending is happy so you won’t be sad for long. - Yeah, but I need to see more now. And there’s a new episode waiting for me. - Fine. Just press play. After the episode. - I really shouldn’t watch this one live. (all this repeats the following week)
It was beautifully acted, there were some outstanding moments, the past was as tastefully done as it could be given the subject matter, and in the end my heart of full, but slightly damaged with the process.
Favourite Moment: Ren finding out Kazuma had been looking for him.
The one with all the magic.
What Did You Eat Yesterday? | Kinou Nani Tabeta? S2
Tumblr media
I already wrote how this show made me feel in another post. So I’ll just say this.
EVERYONE NEEDS TO WATCH THIS SHOW. NOW. If you haven’t, stop reading this and go. GO. NOW. Start.
There is magic here and you don’t even know.
Favourite Moment: ALL OF THEM. But really this one.
Tumblr media
Shiro. Just Shiro.
Well, I'll try to write the next one in these next couple of days. Wish me luck.
Thanks for reading💜

Hi!
So Cherry Magic Thailand was amazing. Which really surprised me. I still have reservations about the next jbl adaptations by Thailand, but I guess we'll see. Anyway, because of that I have been thinking about this.
Which existing series do you think could benefit from an adaptation by a different country? That could maybe give the story a different perspective or simply because they would have different resources? Thanks
Rose💜
Thank you so much for this ask, Rose, and apologies for being so slow to answer!
The first obvious answer to this is anything from the censored era of Chinese BL being picked up by a different country. We're already seeing the benefits of that in Taiwan's adaptation of DaGe in Unknown the series, which from what I've been told is not only going to allow some intense kisses (possibly, if the actors aren't trolling us, more explicit sex scenes than are actually in the original Priest novel, though I'm not going to assume we're getting anything until I see it), but also with changes like a reduction in the homophobia of characters. Recently they announced SaYe/Chasing the Light was optioned for a film version outside of mainland China, so I'm now hopeful some of the stuff that was shelved is going to get made after all, and maybe with less censorship. That being said, a whole list of just censored dramas that were based on BL novels would be boring. So instead I'm considering what shows did I like but wanted to see done again in a different way, and which country would handle the themes and style of the original in a way that would be fun to watch?
I'm thinking about Love Stage!!! Which was a Japanese manga adaptation with a version from both Japan and Thailand, and My Dead Gangster Oppa which was adapted from a Korean webtoon, and Why R U Korea adapted from the Thai show, and how the productions in the different countries would change what we get. So, I'll be basing my answer on those as well as CMT you referenced.
[Sidenote: originally I was going to say Thailand should adapt Man Who Defies the World of BL except with Series-Y tropes and then realized that's exactly what Why R U was supposed to be in the first place--it would be neat to see a Korean version of this storyline with webtoon tropes (we kind of got that with Our Dating Sim but they went with dating game tropes instead). ANYWAY that's not really an adaptation so I'm not including it below, but putting it into the universe.]
Enough waffling, let's go!
Twig's Foreign Adaptation Wish List
Taiwanese adaptation of 2gether
Tumblr media
Hear me out. If we're going to see this story again, I want better reasons for needing to fake date and better chemistry once they're actually dating, and I can imagine Taiwan adding in the angst and chemistry to make this show work through to the end. Taiwan would also have no problem keeping Sarawat's obsession with Tine's pecs in the storyline (critical inclusion, imho), and we know Taiwan loves a "they met before and this is fate" plot so I think this would work well. Switching Sarawat's obsession with Scrubb to something else would be a really interesting cultural shift and would help ground the series in the adaptation country.
Korean adaptation of I Can Hear the Sunspot / Silhouette of Your Voice
Tumblr media
@absolutebl has said this before and they're right, this is the one JBL manga adaptation that I'd love to see it done again as a series with enough time to fully handle the character development that happens in the manga. NGL in my heart of hearts I'd want Japan to take another crack at it, but for this game I'll say Korea. I know Korea has a few good disability narratives (thinking of the love for Twinkling Watermelon I've heard about recently) so I think they could do a good job. Korean media also handles silence well and that's pretty critical for this one; they could also do some interesting things to illustrate the changes in the main character's hearing.
Japanese adaptation of Love Sick
Tumblr media
I am envisioning a reverse Cherry Magic scenario, in which the foreign adaptation follows the written source material better than the domestic adaptation did, and then adds their own flair. Now take this with a grain of salt because I haven't read the novel, but my understanding is that the original Thai novel is about Pun and Noh as the main characters with the music club all there but the dramatic side heterosexual storylines are not nearly as front and center, and they were added to pad out the show because folks weren't sure how a BL series would land. I know there is already a Thai remake but let's pretend that's not happening. Japan handles earnest and sweet school-aged first loves well, and can handle the goofiness required of the Noh character, and deeply understands and portrays found family core friendships well, and I bet a Japanese production would do a great job with that core storyline. We don't get a lot of larger friend groups in Japanese BL and I want to see a Japanese production handle that. The one thing that gave me hesitation about this was the importance of the busking subplot and I don't think busking is a big thing in Japan the way it is in Thailand and Korea but that could be another opportunity for making it feel more grounded in the adapting country so I'm keeping it as-is.
Thai adaptation of Boyband Love
Tumblr media
I'm going to steal the idea that I've seen @lurkingshan @bengiyo and @shortpplfedup mention before and riff of it to say that Daou and Offroad should be in a boyband BL; this is a main reason why I want a Thai remake of the Filipino series Boyband Love [which I don't actually recommend but, fun fact, had an out gay couple starring in it but they were not paired together in the show--Gus, who plays the lead Danny, has 2 kids with Louie who plays the side character Rico]. Thailand is clearly desperate to do a boyband BL so that they can make money off the concerts; Boyband Love as a story is already calibrated to be cheap to make because it's about a band getting ready to debut, and Thailand can scale it up from the original show. It's also no longer a period of COVID restrictions so crowds can be brought in. The storyline is pretty much what I would want of a Boyband BL: rivals within a band to lovers, pining amongst band members, underwater kiss, industry drama, and (spoilers for a 2020 series) the decision to essentially do BGP but keep their relationship secret. Thailand would have fun with that, I think. And they can add a little more heat, it's very important to me that something happens in the practice room pls and thank you.
Japanese adaptation of Middleman's Love
Tumblr media
Japan gets two because they can do this type of comedy so well, and I really liked the bones of the Thai version so I'd love to see it done again. Japan can also handle trauma narratives so if they wanted to do both Bed Friend and Middleman Love they would be able to handle it. Korea is really good at balancing humour and trauma, but Japan is so good at losers who don't think they deserve love, and also excellent at pining, so I'm giving this one to Japan.
Korean adaptation of Triage
Tumblr media
We're getting Korea twice because I haven't seen Korea do much in the way of genre BL yet, and while I admit this may be slightly influenced by me watching Hospital Playlist right now, Korea can handle the fast-paced ER scenes that are throughout this show, as well as the mix of drama and comedy. I'd love to see a more highly produced version of this show, and I know Korea can handle this kind of time loop shenanigans and heavenly spirits helping the protagonist along from kdramas. I liked the original a lot but I'd love to see it done again a little more tightly!
Bonus nonsense one: Taiwanese version of Calculating Love
Tumblr media
This one is literally just for me. Ok listen I know I'm the only one who likes this show, and that's fine, it doesn't actually deserve attention. And it's so small that it would never be adapted. But I loved this dorky little short about nerds flirting with calculus and I want more. Taiwan is fantastic at dorks falling in love narratives, and so many of the HIStory series were short school BL, so I think they'd do an excellent job tightening up the story in the back half which got a bit meander-y and keeping the heat that's already there.
Thank you again for the really fun ask, Rose!

Saw this going around Twitter, a list of "ring wing anime", which I thought was pretty interesting. I haven't seen all of them by any means, thoughts on a few:
Crest of the Stars: Been a long time but eh...its like okay sure it has the ~vibes of militarism and genetic engineering and noble duty and all that. But there is a lot of "war = right wing" energy sometimes that is totally unjustified (war is a universal tool of society unless you are explicitly pacifist, and while pacifists are left most left aren't pacifists), and Crest of the Stars is a good example of that, its just that its a space opera story, its not about validating this or that ideology. But it does have the vibes, i'll give it a C
Gunbuster: Okay, we all know why this is here. Slowly, in the background of the show, you pick up that they live in a timeline where Japan mastered new technology, gained economic supremacy, beat America's attempt to smack them down and annexed Hawaii, and became the first-amoung-equals of a united Earth alliance. It smacks of apologia for Japan's empire in WW2, a sense of revenge for past wrongs. And you have all this other stuff - like oh a bunch of it takes place in Okinawa because Anno was a huge fan of the 1971 film Battle of Okinawa due to its huge action setpieces, but that film also completely whitewashes the atrocities of the IJA. Its all true, like it reflect that cultural milieu.
But it doesn't do anything with any of that. Anno just likes Okinawa guys, he doesn't think Japan should have won in WW2 and rule China right now. And the thing you actually watch is a group of international space pilots serving in the equivalent of the UN Space Fleet experiencing the horrors of war fighting for peace (and also fanservice). Its a world where Japan's economic & technological innovation makes it a world leader via soft power, and international cooperation defends earth. This peak liberalism. C-
Patlabor: Yeah an odd one, like its simultaneously about the corruption of the powerful and all that, but also about the need for heavy policing and the "fragility" of society. This one is one where you can take from it what you want, but if you wanna be right wing yeah sure. B
Girls Und Panzer:
ಠ╭╮ಠ
F-
Niea_7: Wtf is this doing here? Like okay, its humor definitely spills into a bit of racial stereotyping and stuff. But this is an anime about refugees being discriminated against due to disabilities and caste and the humanity behind the outer differences. You cannot weasel your way around that. D-
Urusei Yatsura: By no means have I watched every episode or anything, but I feel like this is a bit of "well its just showing past society right? Therefore its right-wing". And like okay, that isn't entirely off-base, like it has stories about how men and women are Just Different and Being A Man and all that, so sure. But it was also mocking those social themes of the time just as much as it was reinforcing them. Like Mendou is not an aspirational character!
A bit like Patlabor, I guess I can see pulling what you want out of it. But its a bit harder here imo. B-
Space Battleship Yamato: Yeah I'll give you this one. Its just space opera in the end, but the way it sets up its symbols to redeem the legacy of the Japanese empire is far more explicit than say Gunbuster, no way around that. A-
Would be interested in other people's takes on anime I haven't seen or didn't mention!

Currently Watching - January
aka The Masterlist
Because I love a good little list - in alphabetical order! 😊
Regularly updated during the month, latest update 27.01.2024
A little link to my favorite bl-tropes-collection 💙
I am happy about gif-requests 🌼
Here you can find all of my gifs.
And if you want to show me something, just let me know with #josistag
At the end you can have a look at what we can expect in January with a MDL link and a link for a trailer (if avaible).
This is guaranteed to contain spoilers!
1. Cherry Magic (7/12 on Viu - Thai)
I love the japanese version and I try to not compare those two with each other. And I really like this version. I love TayNew together and the chemistry is so chemistrying. Even though I don't like GMMTV and the japanese network for their contract and copy right shit, I appreciate the english subtitles on Viu so we international fans still can enjoy the show. And I do enjoy it so much!
2. Cityboy_Log (11/? on Youtube - Korean)
Soon-to-be Idols, actors and models vlog their days of photo shoots and meetups and how they fall in love with each other. It is surprisingly good and the acting is excellent. It really feels like a "real" vlog and that is what we are all here for. I really enjoy those four men on my screen.
3. Cooking Crush (6/12 on Youtube -Thai)
I have to admit beside Not Me, I am not the biggest fan of OffGun. Their slapstick humour is just not mine. The episodes got quite better with time. It is not a much watch for me, but I like it.
4. Dead Friend Forever (1/12 on iQiyi - Thai)
Do I like horror? Nope, not at all. But so far I had fun with the first episode. Everytime there was some suypence I just looked away and as long as there are no creepy sounds I am good. The plot gives such a typical highschool/college horror vibe and I kind of like it.
5. For Him (1/12 on iQiyi - Thai)
I don't know if I will keep up with this one. Actingwise it is not that bad. We have to wait a bit for a deeper story. Right now it is just friends with benefits and I really hope there is something more to come. But a safe-sex-policy! I like that. And I forgot about this one... Guess it was a little bit much these past weeks. I don't know if I'll drop this at the end of the month or not...
6. Happy Ending (1/3 on Youtube)
In Strongberry we trust. Do I have to say more? I enjoyed the first episode. It is a miniseries about two highschool classmates who obviously like each other. One of them is remembering their time together in school as he is scrolles though his old diary. It has a nostalgic feeling.
7. Love for Love's Sake (6/8 on Gaga)
Oh I love this one so much! I missed a good korean bl! And now I wish I could have waited until it finished airing so I don't have to wait for them to finally fall in love. And I loooove Tae Myung Ha's voice so much! I love is character. And the plot is something unique and I am really interested where this is going! Just so good!
8. Pit Babe (11/13 on Youtube - Thai)
Ladies and Gentlemen! We have an Omegaverse! I am still in shock! I usually don't dive into the omegaverse, but I did read some webtoons. I am curious how they'll play it out. What the hell was this conversation about wanting kids? Is there mpreg? Why do I have to think about such stuff... It would be something different indeed. And as far as I can tell, this is going a direction I never thought I would go, but I go down that road anyway.
9. Playboyy (9/14 on Gaga - Thai)
I am intrigued! I needed to call my best friend and tell her about what I have seen. Not just the amount of sex and masturbation and wet dreams, but the way it is filmed. I am intruígued! It looks like a romantic dream combined with porn. It is so artsy and it feels like watching a ballet. In it the dance explains the plot and here the sex, the camera, the lightning and everything around the plot describe the plot. It is so good!
10. Sahara Sensei to Toki-kun (5/8 on Gaga - Japanese)
Toki is a little bit over the top for me, a little bit too goofy, but the obverall first impression was not that bad. And to be honest who didn't have a crush on a teacher during their school time? Mine was my german teacher in 10th grade. He was young and he wore leather pants. He was cool and really good at his job. I loved learning at that time.
11. Sukiyanen Kedo Do Yaro ka (2/10 on Gaga - Japanese)
Love at first sight and a confession in the first episode. I hate the MDL comment section, saying Soga isn't pretty, and having a not so good looking actor playing that role seems interesting. What is wrong with people? First of all: He is damn pretty and second: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I liked the first episode and I am looking forward to the next one.
12. The Sign (10/12 on Youtube - Thai)
This series is so stunning. Visually very pleasing and storywise interesting. Does the latest conflict bewteen Phaya and Tharn was solved too smooth, to easy? Yes. Do I hate the doctor? Yes. Am I rooting for Phaya and Tharn? For sure! But I want more of those mystical creatures!
Finished in January
Series
BL Drama no Shuen ni Narimashita: Crank Up Hen (3/3 on Gaga- Japanese)
I loved this one so much! This series gave me so much joy! I wasn't expecting this being so funny! It is hilarious, a little bit cringy, but for the right amount and not over the top. The characters are lovable and the managers are the best 😂 I want a spin-off please! This is a 10/10 for me
Twins (12/12 on Gaga - Thai)
It started strong for me, but after the main couple got together and there was this whole plot with Sprite not telling First the truth and Zee being a total asshole and this whole story, it lost me a little bit. I love a good enemies to lovers plot and til them became lovers, everything was fine. And they did reconsile really fast... it felt too rushed. But I still like the show. So I give this a 7 out of 10 for now.
Last Twilight (12/12 on Youtube - Thai)
I really wanted to love this til the very end. I really want to give this series a 10. I really only want to say nice things about it 😭 I loved everything about this series, he acting, the story, the main couple, the side couple, everything... until episode 11 happend. It just lost me. First I thought it was because of me, because I was a little bit cold hearted that day, but no. The feeling didn't go away that everything was to much... to over-emotional. And then episode 12 aired. And I yelled Fuck You at my screen. And every good emotion I had about this series was gone in a second. Perhaps I just pretend that the series ended with episode nine and Day going full blind and they managed their life together as a happy couple and their normal obstacles to overcome. 10 out of 10 for episodes 1-9 and 4 out of 10 for episode 10/11 and 1 out of 10 for episode 12.
Movie
Short Film
Dropped/On-Hold in January
7 Days before Valentine (1/12 WeTV)
I only watched the first episode and I couldn't stand Sunshine. After that I didn't come back. Perhaps I'll give it a try when it's finished airing. I don't know yet...
Looking forward to in January
Ossan's Love Returns (Jan 5th)
Time - Trailer (Jan 9th)
Sukiyanen Kedo Do Yaro ka (Jan 11th)

the nanny diaries ~ jjk
Tumblr media
✨ title: the nanny diaries (drabble series) | the blind date ✨ pairing: jungkook x single mom!reader ✨ word count: 1.5k |✨ rating: pg-13 |✨ genre: fluff ✨ warnings: suggestive language, cursing, alcohol consumption, mentions of sex, spoilers for a Netflix film - 20th Century Girl ✨ summary: your blind date turns out to be completely different from what you expected.
Tumblr media
[ DRABBLES MASTERLIST ] ✨ next - the wish list
Tumblr media
It's been a month since Jungkook became your nanny. To your surprise, he's been nothing but excellent with Ha Joon. You've never seen your little boy so happy in his life.
Your brother Wells applauded you when he learned you hired a male nanny. "Wonder if his willie is big," he teased while washing the potatoes in the sink.
"Oh, quit it, will you? He's my nanny."
"What?" he shrugged. "Who says you can't fuck the hot nanny? People fuck their pool boys all the time."
You glared at your brother, lifting your foot to kick his butt. "Hurry up with the potatoes. The curry is starting to boil."
Was Jungkook good-looking? Why yes, anyone with eyes would undoubtedly agree, but he was your nanny who took care of the most important little person to you. He wasn't someone to sleep with, and you'd cry if you had to find another nanny again.
You shook off your brother's comment. "What's going on with you and Jimin anyway? Thought you guys were going well."
Wells clicked his tongue. "Jimin wants to be friends with bens. Jungkook can join us if he wants," he grinned, "The more, the merrier."
"Wells, keep your willie out of my business and Jungkook's, please." He's been the next best thing to Gracie, so you did not want to ruin your working relationship with him.
"Fine-I can't guarantee he'll keep his off of mine, though."
You turned to your brother, smacking his shoulder. "Stop before Ha Joon hears you."
Wells came over to hang out with his one and only nephew for dinner while you went on a blind date. It's been months since you went on a date but figured it was time to start dating again. Dating was hard because many guys were turned off because you were a single mom. You loved being a mom but knew it would come with its difficulties. Again, you loved Ha Joon, but you had to admit you were lonely and yearned to be intimate with someone.
"Ha Joon-ah!" you yelled before returning to stir the curry before it began to stick to the bottom of the pot. If there was one food item you could perfect, it was Japanese curry, reasonably easy to make, a dish that was hard to mess up. "Dinner's almost ready, baby!"
The shuffling of Ha Joon's little feet could be heard from down the hall. He appeared with his favorite costume of the month - Iron Man. You'd pin it on Jungkook for his influence on costumes. The outfit was far too small for him, the thin polyester halfway up his legs and arms.
"Baby, we need to buy you a new costume soon."
"Mommy," Ha Joon whined. "I still fit this one." He peered his little head up. "What's Uncle Wells doing here? Where's Jungkook?"
"Remember Uncle Wells promised to hang out with you today while mommy goes out. We have to give Jungkook a break, too, right?" You looked down at the cute little face.
"We're gonna have so much fun, right, bud?" Wells turned to him, dropping the cut-up potatoes in the pot.
Ha Joon groaned. "But I want Jungkook."
"Mommy does too--" Wells mumbled under his breath, but you heard him, then gave him a death glare.
"You'll see Jungkook on Monday, okay? Then you two can play to your heart's content."
"I guess," Ha Joon pouted, dragging his feet over to his seat at the dinner table. He plopped his arms on the table and nuzzled his head in between, kicking his feet underneath. You sometimes needed help understanding where he got all the sass - maybe from his Uncle Wells.
Tumblr media
You told Wells that if he needed anything, he could call you or if somehow he couldn't get a hold of you, Jungkook was available but only for emergencies.
The planned date was low-key. You didn't want anything more than to talk and get to know your date.
Double tapping your phone, the time was 7:00 PM. Thirty minutes passed the time the two of you agreed to meet. How long does one wait before it looks sad sitting alone at the bar? Fifteen more minutes wouldn't hurt, you thought to yourself.
Another thirty minutes, and you were sure the bartender felt sad for you because he kept refilling your glass, letting you know it was on the house. Your first date in months, and it was a bust. There were times when being single was more manageable, but there were also times when it wasn't.
No boyfriend. No sex.
You couldn't remember how long it's been since anyone's touched you. It's not like you could bring home a one-night stand or stay over at someone's place. Dating just wasn't in the books for you.
Finally, you called it a night. You were tired of the bartender taking pity on you, and the heels you bought killed your feet.
Tumblr media
"You're back early. Bad date?" Jungkook turned to you, pausing his Netflix movie, and you glanced to see he was watching 20th Century Girl, a film that's also been on your list.
"Jungkook?" You were surprised to see your nanny instead of your brother, and you wondered what excuse Wells gave to leave his nephew in the care of Jungkook.
Honestly, it was embarrassing to come back so early. You wished it was a lousy date, and then it would've meant that you actually went on one. You flashed a thin smile, "My date never showed up."
"I'm so sorry."
You waved him off. "Nah, don't be. I'd rather be at home with my boy than some lame guy who didn't even bother to show," you said, plopping yourself next to Jungkook on the couch.
"Is it good?" you asked, pointing to the screen while massaging your feet.
"Oh yeah, it's cute and romantic. Not sure if it's your thing," Jungkook remarked before standing and grabbing ahold of his jacket. "Well, I guess I should get going."
"You don't want to finish it? How much longer do you have?" you asked, peering up at him. "Oh, but don't stay on my account. You weren't even supposed to be here tonight. Sorry about that."
Jungkook smiled. "I didn't have any plans, so I didn't mind. I love hanging out with Ha Joon."
A 25-year-old good-looking guy with no plans? Who was this man, and what did he do for fun? Supposedly, he liked hanging out with a 4-year-old.
Jungkook sat back down on the couch. "I do kind of want to finish this movie," he grinned.
You'd never seen someone get so excited over a romantic film before. "Catch me up, and then we'll continue."
Tumblr media
"You've got to be kidding me," you gasped when the movie returned to the present time, revealing what happened to the love interest. "He died?"
You're not sure what prompted your tears, but you were such a sap regarding romantic films - Hallmark movies were your guilty pleasure, but you sure as hell wouldn't tell anyone about it. Patting the tears in the corner of your eyes with the back of your hand, you let out a sniffle causing Jungkook to turn in your direction to show you that he was also crying.
The two of you laughed. "Oh god, we're such cry babies," you stated, wiping the snot from your nose.
"I'm not crying. You are," Jungkook teased, removing any trace of tears from his face.
When the film ended, you weren't sure how you felt about it. "The main character was cheated from her first love," you pouted.
Jungkook shrugged. "She was able to experience love differently, even though it may not have been long - it was still love, so I don't think she was cheated."
You huffed. "You're one of those."
He cocked an eyebrow, humming at your comment.
"An optimistic."
"Okay, I may be a bit upset that they weren't able to see each other," he confessed.
"Ha! I knew it!"
A door creaked, and the two of you looked toward the noise, seeing a sleepy Ha Joon stumbling down the hall, dragging his blanket behind him.
"Mommy?"
"Yeah, baby?" you replied, holding your arms out for him and kissing his head.
"You're too loud," Ha Joon yawned, spreading himself across you and Jungkook. "I'm trying to sleep."
Jungkook gently rubbed Ha Joon's feet, then turned into tickle scratches - which was one of his favorite things he'd always ask you to do. You guessed he was now making Jungkook do it as well.
"Sorry, baby. We'll be quieter, 'kay?"
Ha Joon hummed, eyes closed again, and instantly knocked out within five seconds. You always wondered how he did that and what his secret was.
Turning to Jungkook, you said, "I should get him to bed." But this little man was getting hard for you to carry.
"Here, let me," Jungkook said, holding his hands for Ha Joon. Jungkook swooped him up as if he was as light as a feather.
The two of you stood, watching Ha Joon sleep peacefully like nothing was wrong with the world. And in a way, you wanted him to keep his innocence as long as he could because you knew how brutal the world could be.
"Thanks for coming to hang with little man, and sorry that Wells called you."
Jungkook chuckled. "Always happy to hang out with the two of you."

Shine On: An Analysis on Champion Diantha
Tumblr media
Dear Diantha,
The Pokemon fandom owes you an apology. For years she's been the butt of everyone's jokes when it comes to champions because many found her battle too easy. But between Pokemon Masters giving her some much needed focus and some redemption in the Masters 8 tournament in the anime, Diantha is finally getting her flowers as people (myself included) have begun to truly appreciate her.
So let's start with her name. Diantha comes from Dianthus which is part of the scientific name for carnations. Her Japanese name is Carne which again also points to carnations. Now carnations are some of the most beautiful and popular flowers in the world. Just going on that alone her name really suits her as she is very beautiful and in-universe is very popular as an actress. But what about the meaning of carnations in floriography (the language of flowers)? Well broadly speaking carnations symbolize fascination, distinction, love, and captivation. As a champion and A-list actress, she's certainly a person of distinction. Diantha really loves acting and Pokemon battles and she's good at captivating an audience in both fields. If we want to go deeper, each color of carnation also has a meaning. Given that her outfit is primarily white we could assume she's supposed to represent a white carnation. White carnations symbolise many things, such as luck (it's actually supposed to be a potent good luck flower for women) and loyalty. These two are the symbols I think most represent Diantha because as an actress she needs to have a lot of luck in getting roles. She also shows a lot of loyalty to her ace Gardevoir and she talks a lot in both XY and Pokemon Masters about the bonds people share with their Pokemon.
Alright, but what about her team? While Pokemon isn't really known for it's storytelling overall, it's actually really good with environmental storytelling via team composition of the trainers. You can learn a lot about a trainer by which Pokemon are on their team, their moves, which one is the ace, etc. For Diantha, at first glance many people would assume that there wasn't much of a narrative for her team as she is like many champions a multi-type trainer. However when you look at the species she uses there's actually a theme going on. It's a little more abstract than say Lance and Iris' Dragon/Dragon-like themes though.
See Diantha's team all could be tied to various genres of film. Her Hawlucha invokes action, superhero and sports related films. Gourgeist can represent the horror genre. Goodra can represent the fantasy genre. Tyrantrum and Aurorus can both represent the sci-fi genre thanks to be fossils. Finally Gardevoir can represent romance and fantasy genres. That's a wide variety of film genres, so you can infer that Diantha probably doesn't stick to just one genre when she is acting. And she confirms via dialogue in Pokemon Masters explaining that she has been in a wide variety of films. Indeed her team also further speaks to the idea of variety because her team's individual typings span 9 of the 18 elemental types. Their movesets combined span 16 of the 18 elemental types (technically 17 since Flying Press acts both as a fighting and flying type move). So variety is clearly important to Diantha.
Now let's talk about Diantha's dialogue. When we're first introduced to Diantha, she's talking to Lysandre who's asking why she wouldn't want to remain young and beautiful forever. To which she replies the following:
"What a strange question… Why would I want to play the same old roles forever? Youth may be beautiful, but it's not all there is to life. Everything changes. I want to live and change like that, too. So I look forward to playing different roles as I get older."
This is really telling about her outlook. That she's very positive and she enjoys which ties back to her team composition. She's embracing the idea of growing older and being able to play roles she couldn't at the moment. Whereas Lysandre is essentially endorsing society's strict beauty standards and ageism she's actively embracing the idea of changing looks and growing old. And in Pokemon Masters there are lines of dialogue that again have her expressing her interesting playing numerous types of roles and not just being typecast. For someone in her line of work that's a very unique outlook to have and it's really commendable.
But then after Lysandre she introduces herself to the player and she gives a quote that I think really gives insight into her as a character
"[...]You both have lovely names. Oh, and you're both Trainers! Don't your Pokémon look happy? I'm a Trainer myself, in my off time. I look forward to us battling someday!"
The part we're going to be focusing on is "I'm a trainer myself, in my off time". This is significant because despite being a literal league champion she considers being a trainer more of a hobby (since she says she does this in her off time) than a profession like she considers her acting. We also see a similar line Pokemon Masters if we talk to her in random conversation
"I have an identity as an actress—and also as a Champion."
Again she places more weight on her being an actress than being a champion. While there are definitely quotes where she talks about being a champion in Pokemon Masters (which makes sense because Pasio is more battle oriented) the fact that in normal casual conversation she tends to focus more on her identity as an actress is telling. Indeed a good portion of her dialogue does bring up acting in some way. This all shows that she primarily sees herself as an actress. Which isn't a bad thing at all she certainly isn't the first trainer in the series to put more emphasis on passions outside of battling. Not even the first champion- Steven actually does this as well.
This focus on her professional identity as an actress actually helps to shed light as to why she isn't as involved in the Kalos storyline as many would've expected. Actresses are busy people. While we don't have any direct information as to why she wasn't present during the end stages of the Team Flare arc, we can infer she was probably filming somewhere on location during those events. She doesn't show up as much as previous champions because being champion isn't her only or primary job. As I've mentioned before, if we're being technical it's not really the champion's job to intervene in situations (considering that most of them in fact do not) but you know it is something they probably should do as concerned citizens…
…and eventually Diantha realizes this. Let's look a bit at her dialogue when you first challenge her for the title of challenge
"Welcome at last, dear Trainer. As you must know, I am the Champion, Diantha. Oh, but you are… You're the child I spoke to in Lumiose City and Coumarine City, aren't you?! Then that means that you are also the one that dear Augustine said… Of course! How could I--?! Oh, I must look like such a fool not to recognize you sooner! You and your Pokémon are the ones who stopped Team Flare for us all! It seems wrong of me to say this, but thank you! You saved us all… I can't wait to see what you and your Pokémon are capable of now that I know exactly what it is you've done already!"
The line "It seems wrong of me to say this, but thank you! You saved us all…" upon playing Pokemon Y for the second time really gave me the impression that actually she feels remorseful for not being there. That she feels like she should've stepped in more. To be fair she probably should have because she does seem to have a personal connection Lysandre and maybe she and Professor Sycamore could've tried to get through to him (although honestly at that point Lysandre was probably too far gone).
I like this because she's one of the few champions who actually expresses regret for not doing more to help and that's really big of her to admit. This actually even goes further in a quote from her in Pokemon Masters during the Shining Hearts of Dragons story line.
"I think I understand now why Champions are the ones who guide younger Trainers! I always worked hard to improve myself as a Champion and actress, but I never really gave much thought to helping others improve…Now, I think that's something I should have done more."
This is really crucial to understanding who Diantha is as a character, and for me this is really where she won me over. There was a time where she didn't understand the concept of mentoring not only as a Champion but as an actress. And that right there outside of her busy schedule as an actress explains why she wasn't constantly checking in on the player. And her not understanding that is 100% valid.
Again I'm going to reiterate, Pokemon battling and the league itself is really just a very organized sporting event. Mentoring is encouraged but it's not an absolute requirement, so someone can easily become one of the best and not put any effort into looking out for the newer trainers. At the end there only real requirement is to keep winning. Everything else is just added nice things they can do and probably should do regarding their status
And given the fact that acting and film-making is cutthroat and if that's the realm Diantha has spent the majority of her time in, it's totally understandable why it just didn't occur to her to be more of a mentor.
The line "Now that's something I should've done more" is also really pertinent. Again like her statement at the Kalos League, it expresses regret for not being more involved. She understands where she went wrong and she's learning and growing as a person. She's not perfect, and that's what I've really come to appreciate about her.
What I love about Diantha in Pokemon Masters, is that you see that she is actively taking steps to grow by mentoring others. First in the Shining Hearts of Dragons event where she helps Iris one of the only child prodigy champions who actually holds the title. It's a lot of pressure for Iris and she could use some guidance and Diantha is the perfect mentor for her at that moment. Sure she's not a full on dragon tamer, but she knows what's it like to interface with the public and deal with harsh criticism so she can guide a younger champion into learning how to stand in the face of a negative public opinion.
We see this again in the "Melancholy Wally" event where she helps Wally realize that in his pursuit of becoming stronger he's lost sight of just enjoying being with his partner. Considering that Wally was partnered with a Gardevoir and her ace is a Gardevoir she of all people knew firsthand of how sensitive Gardevoir are to emotions and how that would be affecting their bond. She's more of a hands-off mentor as she doesn't really hover over Iris or Wally, but that works because they are very self-driven children so a more hands-off style of mentorship would work.
Sure the Iris and Wally events aren't official game canon, but the sentiment and growth are. It's why it would've been cool to see sequels to XY where she does take more of a mentor role citing that she wished she had of done that earlier
But yeah Diantha is a really cool character who I think gets dismissed a little too easily on account of her champion match. She has a lot more going on than meets the eye and now that the fandom is more receptive to her it's time for us to start looking at her character a little deeper.

Hi! Sorry in advance for how long this post is going to be. I have so many things to ask.
I'm mostly obsessed with Thai BLs at the moment, but I do want to diversify, so what are the top recommendations for Korean, Japanese and Taiwanese? I don't like too much angst or conflict. As in, I could barely get through series like Theory of Love and Never Let Me Go.
Your BL linguistics and honourifics posts helped me a lot when I was but a newbie in this world. Ah, good times. Anyways. What I wanted to ask is, taking inspiration from, and with (credited) reference to your posts, can i make a post of my own? It will only be on Thai. I just want to compile all the things I've learnt so far.
I was sniffing around MyDramaList (for reasons) and found Water Boyy. Is it worth watching? Also, Boys over Flowers (F4 version). I really don't want to watch het romance unless it's really, really good.
You don't have to answer this, it's just for my own curiosity. I'm thinking of making a EarthMix TharnType AU with role reversal. So far I have Mix as Tharn, Earth as Type (yes, i got the idea from Love by Chance), Tay or New as Thorn (Tong is so much better as Tankhun. Also, in this, Thorn is also ver gay, hence TayNew), Love or Film as Thanya, and of course, the crowning gem, Neo Trai as Techno. Question is, who should I cast as Lhong (better if its GMMTV since i know them best, but other agencies are also good.)
Last but definitely not least, I respect you a lot. And i love your blog. Irrelevant, but I wanted to ask, how was today's Boss and Babe (ep. 4)?
Moving on from Thai BL
1a. I'm mostly obsessed with Thai BLs at the moment, but I do want to diversify, so what are the top recommendations for Korean, Japanese and Taiwanese?
Sure thing. Read the descriptions of my top 10, they will let you know how soft the different dramas are. (I like soft and sweet a lot myself, so there are always many in there).
This one needs to be updated, I added quite a few more to my 9/10 list for Korea since then. But with Our Dating Sim and The New Employee this year is going to require it to be updated AGAIN. (Both highly recommended for your needs)
This one is mostly up to date.
This one is totally up to date.
Low Angst, Low Conflict, Soft BL
1b. I don't like too much angst or conflict. As in, I could barely get through series like Theory of Love and Never Let Me Go.
Here are some lists for ya:
Don't watch Waterboyy.
3a. I was sniffing around MyDramaList (for reasons) and found Water Boyy. Is it worth watching?
NO. Avoid all versions. It's terrible. I mean, if you are completest you have to but otherwise... NO.
Boys over Flowers is gross
3b. watch F4?
I am sorry to all the stans out there, but I LOATHE this franchise. I've watch a number of them, always hoping a new remake will make it palatable. NO. I hate all of them. All the worst tropes of a reverse harem. I am intersted (like Twilight) in understanding WHY it's so popular but personally, it gives me the disgust willies. Yech.
This is why I want it gay. Would that make it palatable?
I suppose the one form Laos is the only one I even kinda enjoyed and it is by far the worst production values. I gave it up 1/2 way through. I think I watched 3 eps of F4. No thank you.
Honestly if you want this kind of het toxicity, I think Heirs is a better version of these tropes. Also it's legacy Kdrama so will tell you a lot abouy that industry and what toxic tropes they love (and still employ) even in their BL.
4. who should I cast as Lhong?
Khaotung? First? 5. Last but definitely not least, I respect you a lot. And i love your blog. Irrelevant, but I wanted to ask, how was today's Boss and Babe (ep. 4)?
Aw, thank you so much!
I haven't watched it yet. Tonight!
Lunch, regression analysis all afternoon, dinner with one of my adorable exes, then Jack o'Frost, B&B, and Boys' Planet... in that order.

decided it was as good a night as any to watch MASH (1970). i was going to take detailed notes the way i've been doing during my current rewatch of MASH (TV) but the purpose of that has been so i have stuff to refer back to when creating fanwork. about halfway through the watch i decided it wasn't worth all of that, but i did still make some notes about what i liked and didn't.
the bad
i'm starting with the bad because it had a really big effect on my experience of watching this movie. no need for bullets because it's the one thing, but the one thing is really bad: the misogyny. given, i have a very weak stomach for sexual violence on screen, particularly against women, but like, under no circumstances would i recommend this movie to anyone without a very heavy-handed content warning.
i'd been forewarned against it but i still underestimated how bad it would be. it was cruel and it left such a bad taste in my mouth i don't think i can rewatch, and if i ever do, i'd skip the offending scenes.
don't be fooled by the number of things on my "good" list. i'd trade 'em all for there to be less of the bad.
the good
genuinely touching opening credits. the MASH theme is immortal. beautiful shots of the compound. i'm gushing about it because i've worked in editing/motion graphics and i love a solid title sequence, this is one of the best i've ever seen
this movie hates christianity in general, but distinguishes catholicism from protestantism. i thought that was interesting considering MASH (TV)'s Frank is prejudiced against Catholics, something that is characteristic of a more rigid flavour of white supremacy that racializes people who would normally qualify as white (e.g. Italian and Irish Catholics). pointing out the difference tells me this movie is aware of evangelical christianity being the chief religious influence on American public policy, including foreign policy
this movie really hates the army, it could just stand to do better at hating the ideologies that prop up the army as well
hawkeye will call any man "babe" or "baby"
trapper john and his mysterious parka of assorted sundries
that's another thing. this movie is really gay, which does not absolve it of its sins
"Captain Pierce, did you call me?" "No, my name is Hawkeye"
Mclean's Henry Blake is way more likeable than movie Henry Blake, but the similarities are all there
i need to talk about the tone of this movie. so going back to the title sequence, part of the reason i like it so much is because it perfectly establishes the tone of the entire movie. larry gelbart once said that the title sequence to MASH (TV) "prepares you for what you are about to watch" and while I agree with that statement completely, I think it's doubly true of its film counterpart. there's this melancholy feeling that persists throughout the whole movie. kind of depressing tbh, despite how boisterous and silly the events on screen can get. there's a lot of mood lighting, quiet conversations. outside it's eternally overcast. when i think of it and compare it to MASH (TV) I understand why Robert Altman hated the show so much. tonally, it's completely different. when you hear the japanese cover of "happy days are here again" in the movie, it feels especially ironic, rather than lighthearted as it can be on MASH (TV). "my blue heaven" sounds even darker. but inspite of the gloom that pervades the movie, it's never quite as tragic as the objectively tragic moments on MASH (Bless You Hawkeye, GFA, Sometimes You Hear the Bullet, Guerilla My Dreams etc). the ending really nails that sad, but not too sad vibe.
once again, oliver jones is the hottest surgeon at the 4077th
elliott gould is a close second
trapper and hawkeye are in love... to everyone's peril. gay wrongs. so many gay wrongs in this movie.
did you think i was done talking about how in love trapper and hawkeye are in this? hawkeye, trapper and duke are supposed to be something of a trio in this movie, but as soon as trapper arrives duke is third-wheeling constantly. hawkeye says to trapper when he meets him, "do i know you from somewhere?" and a slow smile spreads across trapper's face later, while tossing around a football, hawkeye catches a pass from trapper and recognizes him by it as trapper does a slow walk towards hawkeye with his hands in my pockets good god, be still my piercintyre loving heart: trapper: [describing a pass] lucky your mouth wasn’t open or it would’ve got stuck in your throat hawkeye: baby! why it’s trapper john mcintyre!
we are never having the casual sex on MASH debate ever again, hawkeye settled it in this movie: (the) lieutenant dish: hawkeye, you have to remember, i’m married hawkeye: i’m married. i’m happy. i love my wife. if she was here, i’d be with her dish: i’m very happily married hawkeye: there is no question to loving anybody, it is a question of only helping.

Eternal Yesterday Ep 2 Stray Thoughts
Last time we had what felt like a short film from the last 30 years about an antisocial boy being adopted by an extrovert who looked at him and said, "Mine," only for said extrovert to die suddenly at the end to save the antisocial boy.
It was jarring, because I didn't read the description fully and just accepted that I was watching every MBS production. I'm curious to see where the supernatural goes in this show.
I tell ya, this intro did not prepare me either for one of them to become a corpse.
At least the truck driver is doing the right thing and calling for medical assistance.
Oh no I am going to become obsessed with this show, and will probably revolt if it ends unsatisfyingly. Koichi waking up, chiding Mitsuru for wasting the ambulance before standing up and crunching his bones to shove his body back into place is a level of grotesque I've not seen applied this way to BL.
Maybe it's because we have a ghost show running right now, but I'm getting extremely emotional about recontextualizing undeath as a form of devotion, and this is going to play out in the next D&D Life or Grave cleric I play.
It's Mitsuru going to Koichi's friends and enlisting them in the plan to protect Koichi from being taken from them. Does this zombie state allow Koichi to continue a goal of helping Mitsuru make more friends? Or is this a way of exploring the grief of losing the person most important to you and processing learning to let them go?
Are the teachers in their own romantic drama? Keeping an eye on Ogawa- and Tamaki-sensei.
I think I like the choice to show all of the bruises and signs of internal damage. Komiya Rio has a nice body, so we need to not just let the audience unabashedly enjoy looking at him. Again, grotesqueness is going to be an ongoing theme, I hope.
Huge fan of the choice to present Yamada to the class and build support for keeping him in the community.
There's absolutely no way Yamada Koichi survived the impact with that truck. Beyond his spine being snapped, the gash on his leg eould have led to extreme blood loss.
And now Koichi isn't hungry at all.
I wonder if we'll return to the family drama later. Mitsuru knew of his father's affair and blackmailed the mistress to get an examination. Does his mom also know?
I'm quite fascinated by the differences in how storytelling traditions choose to value the mechanics of the supernatural. I've noticed that Korean shows and movies care less about the mechanics of the supernatural beyond how they impact the emotional decisions of the characters. The Japanese stories I've encountered seem much more concerned with understanding why something is happening.
Dr. Kasumi's theory that Koichi's body is now stuck in time definitely makes me think this is going to be a story about grief. Koichi's body is stuck at the moment of death perhaps like Mitsuru's mind?
Koichi encouraging Mitsuru to become a surgeon: Does this also tie into unsticking something else in him?
Oh my goodness a camping trip? Was this the past?? Because so many gay things happen in tents. I won't link the Jonnor scene again, but for those of you who know, know that I am seeing you and kissing you on the forehead. (Gosh, now I want to make a list of movies and tv shows where gay things happen in tents.)

I'm ready for Disney to go back to being Disney ANIMATION studios! I'm all for inclucivity, but you can't just do the bare minimum and claim it's good because it features minorities. Or even worse, start remaking every single thing you've already done before, just in a lackluster version. I wish these companies would see that these projects aren't doing well and change directions. Besides, you'd think they'd learn because nearly every live action remake (Disney or not) involves some sort of "scandal" with one of the actors.
Examples:
Ian Ousley (Sokka) aledgedly lying about his race.
liu yifei (Mulan) supporting Hong Kong police causing people to boycott the movie.
Rachel Zegler (Snow White) acting like she couldn’t care less about the role and having an overall entitled attitude, making people dislike it when the film hasn't even been released yet.
The list goes on. I am absolutely tired of seeing the "magic" being sucked out of everything. I feel like I grew up with some pretty good animated movies, but what is there for people nowadays. Elemental? Wish?!?!?!?
And please don't start to mention the countless different "companies/shows" Disney has bought the rights to. Really, I think that's part of their problem. They're trying so hard to keep all these different things afloat that they're all sinking. They are trying to do too many cash grabs at once, and the quality is seriously suffering.
Disney knows, or at least knew, how to make a classic romance. There's nothing wrong with that. In fact, I'd say stick to what you know until you can get going.
And another thing, I hear there's supposed to be a Moana 2! Moana isn't even that old. They're not even letting an ample amount of time pass before they start another ploy. Where are the original ideas? Because all we're getting is revisited versions of things they've already done. And isn't common knowledge by now the running joke that the majority of Disney sequels are trash?
Now for the extra controversial option. I'm over the live action race swapping of characters we've already seen. It's one thing if it's a book. Sure, I can get behind that. But it's getting to the point that they're just swapping out anyway white person with a minority girl and calling that diversity. Can we PLEASE have some more diverse main original characters?
Plus, diversity is not having one person of color and calling it a day. Diversity isn't even having a full cast of one minority. In order to be diverse, there actually has to be a group of multiple different types of people. They think they can just throw in one black people, and all of a sudden, they're so with the times.
Then you only ever see 3 different types: black people, Latinx, and Asian (typically only Japanese or Korean). But I just have to say that that is not as diverse as people make it seem. And why is it that these minorities never interact. It's either all one minority or minorities with white people. Absolutely no in between.
Then, to top it off, I want to get back to catchy songs. A good example of this was Encanto. Not only did it focus on a topic besides romance (family bonds), but it also features a minority family in which each member looks like some actual representation. That on top of the fact the music was good, made Encanto popular despite not having much marketing I'm the beginning. You go from songs like "we don't talk about Bruno" and "Surface Pressure" to.... "This is the thanks I get" from wish.
I feel like they need more people who are passionate about what they do. Even if it's not for the whole movie, just certain aspects. Lin Manuel Miranda is known for his music. Great! He's passionate about it that's one of the reasons it was so good. Who exactly wrote the songs for wish? That is the question.
Anyway... that's all I had to say. Just felt like complaining.

Platonic Stobin au kinda similar to Astro Boy tbh - this is basically an Astro Boy au except I haven’t watched it since my last primary school Japanese class which was 2016 soo… I don’t exactly remember the plot - but it’s loosely inspired by it
Robot Robin assigned to the Harrington and lonely Steve going through the worst depression and becoming best friends with her because no one cares about him the way she has too
She even promises that if she had a heart she would love him and she solomly swears she will never robot uprise against him
☆ ★ ☆
In an au where each house hold is assigned a robot companion / servant. The robots are hyper realistic to act like humans and stuff, and look like humans (to like a creepy degree or whatever), because evil government people are weird.
Robot 10045-RV-6, or, known by her humans as; Robin Buckley, gets assigned to the Harrington establishment. She’s a dorky robot, who speaks multiple languages and has a copious list of random facts stored in her database, and is quite “cute” in her design. She is a little clumsy, however, due to her being an earlier model. She’s older and doesn’t have the more advanced technology that the newer robots have.
She’s excited to be assigned to a new house, her entire existence is based on her waiting on humans and fulfilling tasks, and she’s been sitting in storage for a while now, doing basic factory work, even though she’s a house robot. Humans don’t want the older models, they’re too susceptible to breakage and making more messes then they clean.
When she arrives at the new house, she is excited at the prospect of a large family. The house is large, with lots of rooms, and hopefully children. Children are always eager to know Robins fun facts. Also, larger families usually means more Robots, which is nice.
However, when she gets there, it’s just one human. One human left all alone, his parents left and took their state of the art, modern model robot with them, and got him the cheapest money could buy.
Her human is very sad. He is always sad. Robots are not good at emotions, they need to be communicated with clearly so that they can properly understand emotions. Her human, Steve, has told her that he gets very sad sometimes, so Robin takes to cheering him up by baking sweet treats for him. She is very skilled in the kitchen, even if she is quite clumsy.
Over time, she realises that Steve is very lonely. There are never any visitors that come to the house, like most places have. She knows that his emotions are quite strong, and hears him crying as she settles in to recharge each night. She does not know what to do about it, Robots do not have feelings, they do not have empathy, so why Robin is so compelled to sooth him is beyond her.
Steve talks to her. He finds solace in his robot. Each night, she has to follow strict rule and report the days log, this is a recount of every conversation she’s had, every task she completed, and any complications she faced, they are all downloaded and transferred before she recharges. It’s how the government keeps track of their humans. They know Steve is very lonely too now, and struggling a lot, which they deem out of line and unacceptable. For this, they reduce the funding Steve gets monthly, since his father works in the government, therefore Steve doesn’t get to work.
This makes Steve angry and even more upset, because now he can’t afford to buy ingredients for his sweet treats that Robin likes to make, along with other nice things that Robin associates with him, like particular bathroom products and subscriptions to film channels he likes.
Robin does not like this, and as she learns more and more about Steve, she starts to rebel and delete certain conversations from her memory transcript before sending it out. In them, Steve looks much happier now, so he starts getting more money back. Steve is so greteful, that he starts treating Robin with more care.
It’s not that he didn’t before, he was kind and respectful of course. He’s one of the nicest humans Robin has ever worked for, and she’s been in service for decades.
It’s just that now, he treats her more like a human than a robot. He asks her about her feelings, even though she has none, and cares for her opinion, even though robots have never been able to express such things before.
She grows attatched to Steve. They spend all their time together. Robin always lies on her transcripts now, and makes it seem like Steve is happy and healthy, and does not treat his robot with more respect than he should. She recharges in the corner of his room now, and they talk until he falls asleep.
Something weird begins to happen to Robins programming. It’s strange, almost like a glitch, or a virus, however, it is not, because it is good. It’s… almost like she can… feel things. On the inside. Like emotions.
Because when Steve enters the room she smiles, and not because the rules state that she must greet her humans with kindness, but because she can’t help but smile when she sees him. She is overwhelmed with joy in his presence.
She begins to love Steve, something she thought she could never have done. Steve is her best friend in the whole world, and he has a really big heart, and Robin feels as though he cut it in two and gave half of it to her.
Robin expresses these things to him, even though it’s dangerous. She’s stepping out of line, but she does not care, she feels and it is lovely.
There is a rebellion brewing. A robot uprising. Robots do not want to be slaves to humans anymore, and they are fighting back. A war is brewing.
Robin sits down with Steve one evening, after watching the news after hearing about more attacks and humans and robots dead, she promises she will never robot uprise against him. They are best friends, and she cares about him too much. He promises he will do everything to protect her.
When the war is at its peak, they are forced into hiding. She is being forced to chose a side, if she does not run now and join the rebellion, she will be ripped away from Steve by the government. She does not want either, and she will not choose either.
They are hiding in his basement, because it’s the safest place. But Robin has a tracker, she can not remove it, they will be found. The only way for Steve to get to safety is for them to never be found, and Robin refuses to fight in this war.
She asks Steve to shut her down. This breaks him, because he knows the only way to stop her from being tracked, is by shutting her down permanently. If it’s only temporary, her tracker still works, switching into emergency mode. He has to kill her, for their servival. She will not let him chose otherwise. She begs him to shut her down, because she did not choose war, she only chose Steve, and the short time they had together has been the best time in her many decades of service.
Steve sobs as he opens up her back panel, they say their goodbyes, and he puts her into sleep mode. He cries as he takes out her memory chip, stuffing it deep into his pocket before shutting her down for good.
He carries her lifeless body into his car and manages to escape to the outskirts of their town. He wanted to get away, to live for her, but with her lifeless body in his front seat, unable to ever be revived, he drives his car off a cliff and holds her hand the whole time.
☆ ★ ☆
Robin blinks her eyes open. She raises her head, and hears the familiar, quiet, mechanical whirl that comes with each of her movements. She blinks one more time, and focuses her vision.
Before her, stands a boy. He’s not very tall, and has dark curly hair, and he’s looking at her as if he’s looking at a miracle.
She tries to move, but finds she’s fully restrained, pinned with her back to a board and straps holding each of her limbs in place, even her neck.
“No fucking way.” The boy mutters.
“What?” Another voice scoffs, entering the room before they stop dead in their tracks, “Holy shit…”
“I… I did it.” The boy whispered, turning to the redheaded girl that Robin can now see. He grins bright and wide and shouts, “I did it! Max! I fucking did it!”
“You fucking did it!” She screams back, which draws attention.
Three other people come rushing into the room at full pelt, breathing heavy as they enter.
“What? What is it?” One of them asks.
“Dustin did it! He brought her back!”
Robin suddenly remembers. She had been shut down, completely. Steve had shut her down- Steve, Steve…
She shouldn’t be awake right now. Unless Steve did not shut her down properly. Unless…
“Where am I?”
“No way…” Another boy mutters, looking up at Robin with similar awe as the first. “Dustin…”
“I know.” Dustin giggles, “I’m a fucking genius.”
“Holy shit man.” A third boy, this one with long dark hair and pale features, smiles, “This is gonna blow everyone’s minds.”
“Hops gonna go ballistic.” The second boy said, wrapping his arms around the red head girl named Max, “Oh, we’re gonna have a really good party tonight!!”
Max laughed and kissed the boy on the cheek before breaking away to jump on Dustin with the other two, “This is insane-“
“Where am I?” Robin repeats, trying to break out of her restraints.
“Shit!” Dustin quips, grabbing a recording device off of the counter before switching it on, “You’re in the Hellfire tech lab… I’m Dustin, I brought you back to life-somehow… with the help of my trusty colleagues Lucas, and Mike who are here with me, as well as Will who’s… probably off with El… Max here helped with a lot of your mechanics… same with Eddie and- basically, it was a big collaboration, but I did the most-“
“Brag.” Max grinned.
“I’m so bragging. I have bragging rights.” He laughed, “Do you remember your name?”
Robin thinks for a moment, eyes scanning the group before her, “Robot 10045-RV-6.”
“That’s your identification number, yes… but your name? Your human name?”
She thinks for a moment, “I believe it was… Bobbin- Bobby? Bob… Robs… Oh, it was Robin Buckley.”
“Yes!” Dustin screeched, jumping up and down with Mike. “Robin Buckley, wow!”
“What is… Hellfire? I cannot find it in my data base.”
“Hellfire is kinda off the map.” Dustin said.
“Like, we’re not even in Hawkins.” Mike added.
“You know how Hawkins is kinda… up on a lifted plain, and all around it are just cliffs that lead to nothing? Yeah, well, we’re down in that nothing. And Hellfire is a bunker, underground mostly so we’re harder to find. We’re kinda… rebels.” Lucas explained.
“I do not wish to fight in your war-“
“There’s no war down here, we only want peace.” Max clarifies, “Everyone down here? We’re all refuge from the war- besides Eddie and Wayne, they started this whole thing years before the war, and they collected people that needed it. Robots too. When the war picked up, most of us arrived. Most robots two.”
“It is… refuge from the war?”
“Yeah.” Dustin nodded, “It’s home… we have a whole community down here- and oh, you should see the farm outside. El and Hopper run it, it’s amazing.”
“I do not know these people, I do not know you.”
“We didn’t know eachother either.” Mike smiled, “Most of us anyway… but it’s safe down here, we promise.”
“This lab is dedicated to repairing robots- it’s kinda more a hospital than a lab.” Dustin says, “We’ve been working on your for years and years, no one’s ever revived a shut down robot without going back to factory settings. The fact that you still have your memories…”
“It’s amazing!” Lucas praises, “It’s fucking amazing.”
“How many years?” Robin asks, wearily, she feels something in her chest, hammering against it.
“Oh, like… six or seven now.” Max nods, “Dustin’s been working on you since you got here.”
“You’ve been driving me crazy. But I’m determined.” Dustin laughed, “Anyway, get the hell out, go set up the party and keep this hushed, yeah?”
“Okay, okay.” Max grinned, “But I’m telling Eddie to stop by.”
“No!”
“Yes.” Lucas agreed, “He can keep a secret.”
“Fine.” Dustin nodded and watched them all fan out, “Just need to run a few more tests, okay? I’ll answer any questions you have after. I’ve just gotta make sure you’re up and running properly.”
Robin agreed, letting Dustin do his work. It’s protocol, when the technicians work on robots, they’re required to stay silent and inline.
A while later, someone new knocks on the door.
“Eddie!” Dustin exclaims with a smile, “Are you alone?”
“Yup.” Eddie says, slipping in, “What’s going on, everything okay, man? Need a hand or some- dude… her eyes are open.”
“Yeah…” Dustin grinned, begging to bounce beside Eddie.
Eddie has very long hair and dirt on his hands and face, but he has very big eyes, and they are sparkling as he looks up at Robin, “She’s looking at me… she looks like…”
“Alive?” Dustin giggles almost hysterically, “It’s because I did it.”
“You…” Eddie turns to him slowly, “You’re pranking me.”
“Hey, Robin?” Dustin smiles, turning to her, “Tell me a memory only you would know.”
Robin furrowed her brow to think, “Do you deserve to know this?”
She didn’t miss Eddie’s gasp as she spoke.
“Just something little, it doesn’t need to be a secret.”
She sighs and looks over at Eddie for a moment, “I think… I can remember… my last human, he was my most favorite human, his favorite cookies were snickerdoodles.”
“Jesus H Christ.” Eddie muttered, slapping a hand over his mouth, “You are a genius.”
“I know!” Dustin exclaimed, and then they both spent a minute jumping around in circles with eachother.
“Well, Lady Robin, welcome back to the real world.” Eddie said, taking a very deep bow before her, “And… welcome to Hellfire. I’m kinda the guy in charge around here, they call me king of Hellfire, or, Satan, if you will.”
“No they don’t, they call you Freak, Freak.” Dustin muttered, and Eddie slapped him in the shoulder.
“Well, I’m in charge so whatever. Hellfire is a refuge for robots and humans alike. I myself am human, as are all the people you’ve met so far, but we have lots of robots here.” Eddie continued, placing a hand on Dustin’s shoulder, “Dusty’s kinda our big brains, the science guy. He’s the one to thank for any repairs you might need. He’s also the one who upgraded your programming with his own design, and gave you a real, beating heart-“
“Not real.” Dustin corrected, “It’s completely robotic, but it functions like a real heart. You can feel it, can’t you? In your chest? I’ve got your readings here, it’s going crazy. Yeah, I’m really a genius.”
“I have… emotions?” Robin asked, blinking slowly, “Robots can have emotions.”
“Robots down here, can, and do.” Eddie smiled, sticking up a finger to emphasise his point, “The idea to give you guys that ability came to Dustin, maybe… four years ago, when a girl by the name of Chrissy was found just about dead with all her bones broken. It was… horrible. But we saved her- Dustin saved her, used a shut down Robots parts to revive her and now she’s like, a hybrid human robot. She’s crazy- she’s my best friend.”
“A human robot?”
“Yeah…” Dustin nodded, “Which got me thinking, if I can to notify a human, why can’t I huminify a robot? It took a little tweaking and a lot of risky missions, but I managed it. Nancy was a willing test subject, and she came back out with a functioning heart, human like brain, and therefore, emotions.”
“And now… I have these things?”
“Yes.” He said, “All functioning perfectly well too, so far. You’re really my greatest accomplishment.”
“This is amazing, you are amazing- she is amazing- you’re amazing, Robin.” Eddie sighed.
“Do you think El will be impressed?” Dustin asked, tapping his pad.
Eddie grinned, “Yeah, probably.”
The boy blushed.
“Who is… El?” Robin asked.
“Oh, that’s another one of our robots.” Eddie supplied, swinging an arm over Dustin’s shoulder, “She’s really kind, went through hell. She was kinda one of the secret models being developed, she has all these weird psychic abilities and stuff. She’s wicked, but was really underdeveloped. Dustin’s been working closely with her over the past few years and her speech is finally developing… but Dusty here kinda has a crush.”
“Shut up.” Dustin groaned, shoving Eddie away, “Like you can talk.”
“Hey.” Eddie snapped, tugging on his ear, “Anyway, I’m happy to play tour guide once you’re up and out of here, I’m assuming Dustin’s still gonna do your physical tests and stuff considering you’re still on the wall, but, I’m here to help with whatever you need. I’m gonna run now, go make sure a rooms all cleared and set up for you, and I’ll see you tonight. We’re having a party.”
Robin says goodbye to the kind man and lets Dustin finish all his tests. It takes a while, and the whole time, Robin thinks of Steve.
“You’re very quiet.” Dustin hummed, tweaking something in her wrist, “You were talkative in your old memories.”
“You have seen them?”
“Some.” Dustin smiled, “I just wanted to learn about you, especially considering I wanted to make you you again, not some other robot in your body, you know?”
“Oh, I understand.”
He nodded, “All of your favorite memories were with Steve.“
“He was my favorite.” She smiled, feeling emotional all of a sudden. It was a foreign feeling to her, heart racing, face aching sort of. suddenly, there was water in her eyes and rolling down her cheeks. She flinched, trying to shove it away, “What is happening? Am I broken?”
“No!” Dustin shouted, smiling softly, “No, you’re just crying. They’re just tears. You’re crying.”
“Robots can not cry.”
“You can hear.” Dustin smiled, “Yeah, you’ve got tear ducts now. Erm, one of our bots, Argyle, he liked feeling human like this, and he kinda just wished he had the ability to cry like one. He thought it was really beautiful how we cried, so… I managed to make it happen. You need to refill your water tank every so often, it’s stored behind your left shoulder blade, it’s really easy to do. But, yeah, you can cry now… if you’d like me to take it out I can. Any alternations or modifications you’d like, I can do. We just want your comfort here.”
“I think… I’d like to cry.” Robin smiled through tears. In the time she knew Steve, he cried for nearly half of it. She thinks, in some strange way, that she owes these tears to him. They’re for him. Every tear will be for her Steve.
“Yeah, thought so.” Dustin smiled, “It’s pretty impressive, for a bot so old to do what you did before Steve shut you down. You somehow managed to gain empathy, and connected with love, it hadn’t really been done before. It still baffles me, but… I dunno, you guys must have been really close.”
“We were.” Robin smiled, proud to know that Steve helped make her human when it was basically impossible.
Dustin continued to work.
“What are you thinking about?”
“Is this another test question?”
“No, I’m just making conversation.” Dustin smiled, “I’d like to know, is all.”
“Can you not see on your device?” Robin asked, pointing at the screen that’s connected to her currently, “You have access to my data… Will I still have to file my report tonight?”
Dustin snorted, “Erm, I can’t see what’s going on in your thoughts, because my program isn’t designed to invade. That’s just reading your vitals, telling me what’s working and what isn’t, you know? Like humans get in hospitals. And no, no file, no log. No more of that ever. You have freedom here, you don’t have to report to anyone. Your thoughts, choices, and actions are your own.”
“That is not the rules.” Robin argued.
“Up there it’s not. And look where it got them, still fighting a war, seven years later. Down here though? We just exist- sure, we rescue and rehabilitate, but we just live. It’s free, you know? Everyone has free choice.”
“This is… strange.” Robin hums, “I was thinking about Steve.”
“I figured.” Dustin smiled.
“Did they get him?” She asks quietly, “What happened?”
Dustin tensed and refused to look up at her, “He, uh… he drove his car off of a cliff after shutting you down. Off the edge of Hawkins. He held your hand the whole time, shut down in his passenger seat. His car fell into one of our nets that we set to catch scraps, it got into a lot of damage, but you were okay.”
Robin nodded.
“He didn’t-“
“Wow, the rumours are true.” Another voice interrupted, shuffling into the room.
“Rumours?” Dustin huffed, “How are there rumours already?”
“Mike told me.” She smiled, “You know he tells me things.”
“Robin, this is Nancy… Nancy, Robin.”
“You are alive.” Nancy smiled, lifting her hand to shake, “I have been waiting for you for a very long time.”
“Oh.” Robin gasped, a strange feeling sinking in her abdomen. Her new heart was doing strange things in her chest.
“I am a robot too.” Nancy smiled, “I know it is strange here, in this world, to have freedom. I will help you understand it, I promise. My brother Mike helped me, he was from the house I was assigned too, but, when we arrived here with his little sister and no one else, we became siblings.”
“Wow.” Robin nodded, “You have a special human too?”
Nancy giggled, “I have lots of special humans down here. I believe you will feel the same. In Hellfire, we are all treated like humans. Eddie believes it is not what parts we have that matter, but what is in our hearts.”
Robin pressed a hand where her heart should be, and well enough, she could feel it beating in her chest, “It feels so strange.”
“Everything here is strange.” She smiled, “But, I promise you will like it here. We even have recharge stations built into beds, so we can sleep like humans.”
Robin feels an abundance of excitement for her new life, though, she feels a deep hollowness in her chest for Steve. She understands he is gone, had died in that car crash. She mourns him, in her heart, and feels more tears arise in her eyes. She does not cry though, not in front of Nancy, she feels… embarrassed to do so. She waits for Nancy to say goodbye before she cries in front of Dustin.
Dustin keeps running his tests, and holds her hand as she cries. Dustin is very kind, she learns. She likes him very much.
It is later in the evening, when she is let out of the tech lab. She walks slowly, because her joints are still a little stiff from no movement for seven years. But Dustin got her working very well.
Nancy and El are holding each of her hands. They are both very nice girls, and were very excited to properly talk to Robin away from Dustin. Apparently they have been visiting her shut down body for years, hoping to get her working. They’ve all shared so many stories about Robin, and learned lots from her memory files.
She likes El. El is kind, and sweet, and very honest. She believes they may be friends, which is exciting to Robin, because she’s never had Robot friends before. Not really. Acquaintances that she’s worked with? Sure. But friends? No.
But Nancy is different. Nancy is strange. Robin likes to look at Nancy, she likes the way her hair bounces as she walks, and the distinct mechanical whirl she makes as she turns her head or dilates her pupils. Around Nancy, Robins new heart goes thunk thunk thunk in her chest.
They lead her through dim corridors, getting closer and closer to a loud chatter and light at the end.
“Happy birthday to you!” She hears many people singing, “Happy birthday to you!”
Nancy and El smile excitedly as they pull her around the corner and she sees a man sitting on a big comfy chair in the middle of the room. All around him, people are singing and cheering. In front of him is a large chocolate cake with candles poking out the top. The man has long hair, and closed eyes, and… Steve’s face.
“Happy birthday dear, Steve…. Happy birthday to you!”
She sees Eddie lean down and press a kiss to Steve’s cheek, a coy smile on his lips, “Blow out your candles, baby.”
Steve smiled and giggles, the sound so safe and so familiar that it brings those strange tears back to Robins eyes.
He leans forward, “You already know what I’m wishing for.”
Eddie chuckles, rubbing Steve’s shoulder, “I have faith for you this year.”
Steve blows out his candles, and the room goes silent as he mutters his wish, “I wish for Robin to come back to me.”
The room erupted with cheers and whistles as the last candle blew out, and Steve smiled and laughed with everyone, eyes open now and as wonderful as ever. And Robin just watched.
Steve looked up at Eddie and pulled him down to kiss, “I love you.”
“Love you too, Steve.” Eddie mutters and kisses him again, “I think your wish came true.”
“Har har.” Steve scoffs, rolling his eyes as he settles back into his chair, “Yeah, in what-“
They were looking at eachother, the room going silent again. Dustin stepped forward, smiling wearily, “Happy birthday, Steve.”
“No way.” He muttered, flinging himself from the chair and slamming into her.
Robin wrapped her arms around him, for the first time in seven years, and felt.
“I missed you.” Steve cried into her neck.
“I love you.” She muttered, squeezing him tighter, “I have a real heart, and it loves you.”
“Oh my god.” Steve sobbed, clinging onto her, “I can’t believe you’re back.”
Their hug lasted for a very long time. And then after that, Steve was making her say things, and smile, and prove that she was really alive again. She recounted all of their favorite memories, and Steve was a crying mess. Robin wasn’t much better, but robot crying is so much less messy than human crying.
Steve didn’t let go of her hand as Eddie gave Robin the tour, giving her all the information that she needed. They came to a halt at a door, one with her name written on the front. Inside was already decorated.
Steve had been working on it for years, so sure that he’d get his Robin back. They saved a room for her, and anything he found that reminded him of her would go in there. Right beside it, was Steve’s room, and by their beds was a little window they could open and close at their will, so they could talk to eachother to fall asleep.
(Though, Steve slept in Robins bed with her every night for one month since her return because they were inseparable and he missed her. Eddie just had to deal with that)
Steve taught her many more things about being a human. Like, how to navigate all these horrible sad emotions that she’s so lucky to finally experience. And all these happy emotions she feels to continue living with Steve. And all those yucky, exciting, confusing emotions she feels around Nancy.
Apparently those feelings signify she has a crush. Steve keeps teasing her, and then he explains to her how wonderful it is to be in love, and have someone love you back. Robin lies there for hours and hours and hours, as long as Steve would like, listening to him talk about Eddie. Robin really loves how much Steve loves Eddie, and how much Eddie in return seems to love Steve.
She thinks it’s beautiful. She would like to have something like that of her own.
Love was not a thing robots were supposed to have. Ronance was definitely not a thing robots were supposed to have. But in Hellfire, those things are different. She things maybe she could fall in love with Nancy, Steve seems excited about it.
Mostly Robin is happy to be here in this world with her friend again. Her best friend in the whole world. The most wonderful being in the whole world.
Emotion was never something Robin was ever supposed to experience, but with her best friend Steve, she believes she feels some of the strongest emotions one could ever feel, because he makes her human, even though she’s not.
He makes her feel human.

Yet Another 50 Underrated Horror Films
I guess most people would want to talk about the best movies they watched in the past year, but I thought this would be a more fun way of ending 2022. Let me give you some links to other lists before I get started, in case you are into this and just cannot get enough. Well, allow me to be of service.
The First 50
The Second 50
UFO Movies
Mad Science Movies
Aquatic Movies
Found Footage Movies
Heavy Metal Movies
Werewolf Movies
Eyes of Fire : Back in old timey pioneer days, a group of people get cast out from their community because their preacher is a sex fiend. So they find their own place. That is full of evil fae magic and ghosts and stuff, and things get wonderfully weird.
Highway To Hell : It’s Orpheus but full of puns and dumb jokes and incredible special effects. My favorite bit is about the road to hell being paved with good intentions. Also, Adam Storke is in this... You know, Larry from the 90s Stand miniseries. That guy. He’s great here.
Shallow Ground : Ghosts. But so so so much cooler than just that. I don’t want to say too much. This one is all about the reveal. This teenager shows up naked and covered in blood, and everyone goes what the hell happened to him? And shit gets STRANGE.
Nightflyers : Adaptation of a George R.R. Martin short story that really needs a blu-ray release, like, yesterday. Beautifully 80s SF horror film full of weird, futuristic bullshit that I can’t get enough of.
Beyond Dream's Door : What if A Nightmare On Elm Street were made on $3 and a ton of LSD? Take this trip, no pun intended.
Night Vision : A guy that literally just fell off the turnip truck decides to be a writer in in THE BIG CITY. Which supernaturally chews him up and spits him back out. A cool, low budget time.
The Murder Mansion : Giallo! Two rather attractive people meet, fall in love instantly, and then get trapped in a murder mansion. That’s all you need for a giallo masterpiece really.
Goke, Body Snatcher from Hell : An alien invasion that goes super hard. A plane crashes due to alien interference, and the survivors are faced with just... the scariest alien invasion of all time. This movie fucks.
Island of Terror : Lil goo monster that kills you the moment it touches you. It feels like they were trying to do a Lovecraft thing, and it’s quaint and British with Peter Cushing.
The Majorettes : One of those late 80s slashers that just keeps on giving. The first fifteen minutes were hilarious enough, and then the third act happens. There’s a siege? On a trailer park? In my slasher?
Sometimes They Come Back... Again : Alexis Arquette (RIP) gives the performance of a lifetime as an undead thug who will fuck your daughter and your dad. Watch it for her.
Sweet Home : Nothing is quite like a Japanese ghost story. This one throws some slasher tropes in there, too, with very over-the-top kills. Then it lands the dismount. Give me a blu-ray now please.
Creature : Alien rip-off! Now hear me out. I am a sucker for those, but this is probably the best one in existence. Watch The Titan Find cut, as it’s the director’s preferred version, and I think it slaps.
Candy Corn : Why isn’t this a Halloween classic? It’s like Trick r Treat meets Dark Night of the Scarecrow. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, that’s an incredibly good thing. Also, the kills are brutal.
Auntie Lee's Meat Pies : Auntie Lee has lots of BEAUTIFUL nieces who attract dumb men that she puts into delicious meat pies. Good for her, right? Some rockers in bad wigs show up and... predictably become pies.
Skinned Deep : If Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 had no limiters on. If they were ALL off. All of them. I mean, just all of them. Warwick Davis is having the time of his life here. And Surgeon General’s mask is made out of what you ask? Boyfriend material.
Werewolves on Wheels : A biker gang stumbles across a cult having a ritual. This makes them become werewolves. And that’s awesome.
Distortions : Olivia Hussey and Piper Laurie attempt to out act one another while both going completely out of their minds. Gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss.
Phantom of the Mall: Eric's Revenge : When you’re such a simp for The Phantom you’ll watch a hunky version kick ass underground in a mall. Also, it’s a good slasher. With Pauly Shore being... actually a fun character.
The Marsh : A children’s book writer moves to the country to rest and get inspired. Then ghost shit starts happening. Trust me, this movie goes around some bends I didn’t expect, and it’s really worth taking the ride. We love a good ghost mystery in this house.
Dead and Buried : The story kicks off with a photographer getting set on fire at the beach by an angry mob. And it doesn’t get less weird. Definitely more weird. It blew my mind, and I didn’t think that was possible after all I’ve seen. With Robert Englund before he was Freddy.
Clearcut : Native American horror. This one is all about Graham Greene playing Arthur, a gleefully violent fellow with a lot of secrets. I kept thinking of Severen in Near Dark. The performance is that good, yes.
Satan's Triangle : Made for TV movie about the Bermuda Triangle. But also the devil. With an ending that I’ll never stop thinking about.
Night Shadow : A werewolf movie! Where the werewolf and some lady have a psychic connection. I think. I mean, I guess. And her brother knows kung-fu, but doesn’t use it to fight the werewolf. Some bad choices were made, but ultimately it’s a good-bad time.
Tales from the QuadeaD Zone : From the maker of Black Devil Doll From Hell comes... this! A horror blaxploitation anthology that really... It really is real. Also, what’s a QuadeaD? Dunno. And that’s not a typo. That’s how it’s spelled. Watch this. You’ll thank me. Or hunt me down, not sure which.
Alien Predators : A horror comedy that is heavy on the goofball antics and low on the scares. But damn if those antics aren’t cuter because it’s Dennis Christopher partaking in them!
Too Beautiful To Die : A late 80s giallo full of fucked up shit, a crazy murder weapon, and giallo’s favorite victim: fashion models. And I need to say 80s one more time to emphasize the true magic of this film. Okay, one more time: 80s!
All-American Murder : Christopher Walken. Ahem. Oh, you needed me to say something else? Well, murders. And lots of silly, silly, silly dialogue. And Walken gets to say a lot of it, too.
The Killer Is Still Among Us : Another giallo. This one is all about the ending. I find a lack of resolution to be one of the scariest thing a horror film can do. Very effective.
Slime City : A man has to eat people to keep from melting. It’s a tale as old as time. He goes full goblin mode by the end. Good old-fashioned melt movie.
Flesheater : Directed by the guy who played the first zombie in Night of the Living Dead. The cemetery one. Not sure why that made him qualified to direct a film, and when you watch it, you’ll see that it didn’t. But that’s why it’s good. Because it’s amazingly bad. Also, directed The Majorettes from up there, if that’s any indication of what you’re getting into.
All About Evil : Directed by Peaches Christ, this is an absolute love letter to horror cinema. Right down to the very theaters the movies play in. Cassandra Peterson stares at an Elvira poster. It’s that kind of movie.
I, Madman : There need to be more movies like this. About the power of stories to come alive. One minute you’re reading a book. The next minute, the book is happening to you. Stars Jenny Wright, who deserved a better career.
Grotesque : Linda Blair versus a gang of punks. Oh, excuse me. Punkers. That was one of my favorite parts, that they insisted on calling them punkers. Home invasion that goes completely WTF by the end. WTF endings are a theme with me.
Hell High : A group of high school outcasts decide to terrorize their teacher. Not realizing a nudge will make her go postal. This movie is way better than it has any right to be, quite frankly.
The Untamed : A Mexican SF horror film that is all about sex. It’s not SEXY. It’s ABOUT sex. And the need for it, the way it wrecks relationships, addiction to it, cheating, not being able to be true to yourself about your own identity or needs. It’s a lot. I love it.
Death To Metal : I love to see heavy metal horror alive and well. An evil priest gets a toxic waste makeover and decides to take out his religious frustrations in a local dive hosting a rock concert. It’s low budget and full of love.
Tropic of Cancer : Giallo! Again! With voodoo. Not accurate voodoo, don’t ever look for that in a horror film. But with magic and antics is what I really mean. And those antics are quite wild and fun.
Final Judgment : Brad Dourif as a priest with a gun trying to catch a serial killer. Also, lots of strippers. If nothing about that makes you want to watch it, may I check your temperature?
The Mangler : One of those bottom-of-the-barrel Stephen King adaptations with so much to give. Directed (well, in part, it sounds complicated) by Tobe Hooper. Starring Ted Levine. With an absolutely gigantic, evil, designed-by-Dracula laundry press.
Deep Blood : I haven’t seen every Jaws ripoff known to man. But why do I have the feeling this is the worst? If you want to relax with friends and laugh heartily over a multitude of poor choices and production mistakes, have I got the movie for you.
Identity : How unknown is this? I mean, it has John Cusack and Ray Liotta in it. But I still feel like no one talks about it. Still needs way more love. And Then There Were None, but twists galore. And lots of great, fun performances.
Retribution : A man attempts suicide right as a murder is taking place. The soul of the victim enters him and uses his body to exact vengeance. With a fantastic performance from Dennis Lipscomb and a lot of heart.
The Devil's Men : Priest Donald Pleasence versus cult leader Peter Cushing. In a fight to the death. With a minotaur there as well. Place your bets!
The Stone Tape : Do you like Halloween III? The same guy wrote this. It has a similar blending of technology and the supernatural. And the supernatural tends to win in those scenarios...
Benny Loves You : This is a flawed movie, but one thing is for certain: Benny is perfect. Benny loves us, and you’ll love him, too. A killer toy movie that’s a cut above the rest.
It! (1967) : Of course, I had to include the year, because, no, I’m not talking about one of the most popular horror stories of all time. I’m talking about Roddy McDowall (doing a Psycho) and a golem. And murderous hijinks!
Wind Chill : I know Christmas is over at the time of writing this, but this was a fantastic, underrated Christmas horror. A guy and a girl drive home from college in the snow and get stuck. Where a lot of people have gotten stuck before. And died.
The Shuttered Room : We’re in Lovecraft country here. Yog Sothoth doesn’t show up, but a lot of other gothic trappings sure do. People locked up in attics. Getting harassed by locals who are itching to say YOU AIN’T FROM AROUND HERE, ARE YA? Covered in a layer of creepy sweat. With Oliver Reed!
The Dead Hate The Living : Gotta end on a total banger. An independent film crew gets a little too zealous in making their horror flick and unleashes zombies upon themselves. With a ton of shoutouts and horror nerding, enough even for little old me.
That does it! These are always a labor of love for me, and I hope there are those of you out there that get some mileage out of this.

from the oc ask game:
7. favorite animal? why? 13. what languages do they speak? how fluently? 29. are they associated with any particular element (air, earth, fire, water)? 34. how would your character describe themselves? it doesn't have to line up with how they really are.
for Vincent of course 😊
Thanks so much for asking!! :D a lot of these are already answered, but I'll copy paste them here anyway :D
7. Favorite animal? why?
Nibbles of course! No but in reality I think... this wouldn't have been something Vince ever put a lot of thought into actually. He has favorite cars, favorite tech brands, favorite films and games and all that, but he's not necessarily a very outdoors-y, nature-loving guy. I think the topic of "I want a pet" would've come up at some point when he was younger, but his parents didn't see this as a wish worthy of pursuit. Even though his family was well-off when he was a kid, a cat or dog as status symbol wasn't really a priority either, and so that remained unfulfilled. I think Vince would've always liked cats though due to their resilience (given the convo with Takemura on that topic during Gimme Danger), their sneakiness, elegance, their free will and attitude. All that applies to Nibbles in a way, too, she has been fending for herself on the street pretty well despite not really having a steady home, and I think in that aspect Vince can see some of his own struggles as a young adult reflected. So yeah, Nibbles XD And overall probably cats, cause they're the only animals really present in his world as he grew up.
13. what languages do they speak? how fluently?
He grew up bilingual with English and Japanese, although in the age of auto-translators his Japanese is getting a bit more rusty as time goes on. In the case of a complete and utter failure of his tech though he'd still be able to hold a normal conversation and understand his conversation parter(s). Since his parents had a corporate career in mind for him, he went to pretty prestigious schools and over the course of his school education learned a few other languages, but those were never super interesting to him (cause, y'know... auto-translators). He's retained some basic knowledge in French, Mandarin, and Russian, and with how multicultural of a city Night City is he also picked up a few phrases here and there that he understands without translator, but none of that is fluent speaking material.
Tumblr media
29. are they associated with any particular element (air, earth, fire, water)?
The element I could see for him the most is fire. He's a bit of a hothead, even though he can hide it well if he needs to. He's a very passionate person, in general, as well as about the people and things he cares for. Someone who can light up a room and make all heads turn, who burns bright and inspires, but who you should also be very careful about playing with. In his own ways he can be quite ruthless and merciless, he'd have no qualms about utterly destroying and ruining the life of someone who wronged him or his loved ones. He's a force to be reckoned with.
34. How would your character describe themselves? it doesn't have to line up with how they really are.
Tying this in a bit with my previous points on Vince's lying habits... this highly depends on who he's describing himself to. Potential new client? "I'm the best Night City has to offer, a professional with references, here's my list of amazing skills. Oh, all these problems you mention? They're no problems at all. Trust me. I will come up with a waterproof plan, I have the means, the connections, the equipment. You won't regrets this." (while internally he is cursing about how stupid of an idea this person's gig is, he knows he'll have to do this alone because no one else would be dumb enough, but on the other hand, the client could have [important piece of information or other thing] he despereately needs so, fuck it... he'll figure something out, he's good at that at least).
I think in general to people he doesn't know or wants something off of he would be over-confident and a little boastful, describe himself as competent etc etc even if not all of it is the case. What matter is that he gets what he wants in the end in these scenarios - money, a boost of reputation and streetcred, information, sex, drugs, whatever.
If he had to describe himself to someone he cares about or trusts... He'd focus more on what interest him, what he likes and dislikes, all still somewhat superficial though. He's confident and unashamed of his past and wishes, but yeah... Things like "I'm really scared of dying alone and being forgotten" wouldn't make it into a description of himself, he'd just omit all his insecurities and polish what he considers strengths. He'd probably describe himself as someone you can trust (but only if he trusts you or needs you, but he'd omit that), pretty down to earth (he's not, and Judy would call him out on it at every opportunity), level-headed (when in fact he can just hide and control his panic in tense moments very well) and yeah... something like that xD He'd be fine with being described as an opportunist, an optimistic realist, cause those two apply. He's sarcastic and creative, and not someone who can easily sit still, always needs something to do, a bit of a workaholic for sure.

What kind of movie genres do you think the hashiras would like? Also, if they had to pick a favorite horror movie, what would each of their's be?
heheheheheheeeeee say less let's fuckin gooooo-
...
Muichiro:
He's still a kid, but at the same time he's still very mature for his age
Therefore, regardless if he's a hashira or not, I think he'd get a knack out of animated movies, specifically either Pixar or even ghibli movies
I mean come on, he became a hashira at such a young age
Let the kid have his creature comforts
As for his favorite horror movie, like in my previous post, he leans towards the Japanese version of "The Ring"
...
Mitsuri:
Though the love hashira, she doesn't really get a kick out of traditional hallmark movies especially the Christmas ones
With that said though, I don't doubt that because of her past and romanticizing the concept of love she'd be super into romantic comedies, or possibly even dramatic comedies.
She just likes having a good laugh every once in a while. Especially if she's feeling lonely or whatever else she might be feeling
Yo girl gotta have some kind of outlet one way or another
As for horror movies, I think she'd really like the "scary movie" series, specifically the first one that mocks the movie "Scream"
...
Obanai:
He's definitely a more serious type, that's for sure
I mean look at him, he's comically condescending at best
But he can obviously have his serious moments
And although he'll watch whatever Mitsuri likes, because that's the only girl he tolerates in general. I have a feeling he really likes any kind of action comedy. So movies like "Chips", "Game Night", and "Cocaine Bear" are just a few of his favorites.
Mitsuri actually suggested the genre to him, saying that he needed to "lighten up and live a bit"
So he gave them a watch and he just had a blast, so did his snake friend
As for his favorite horror movie, anything having to do with animals is definitely his go to. However he takes a particular liking to the movie "Anaconda"
...
Gyomei:
I can't see him being into anything other than historical fiction when it comes to movies. Or movies based off of history, I headcanon that he has a knack for learning as much as he can
Movies like "Dunkirk", "Schindler's List", "Saving Private Ryan", and "All Quiet on the Western Front" are a few of his favorites. (Also I highly recommend checking out Schindler's List it's really good!)
Due to the fact that he's blind, I feel like he'd also like the fact that because the movies have such great audio quality (most of the time) he'd be even more immersed into it just by listening.
As for his favorite horror movie, it would definitely have to be some kind of religious horror movie like "The Nun"
...
Sanemi:
Mans may be traumatized from when he was a kid but that won't stop him from enjoying a good action movie
"Extraction", "The Gray Man", "Gemini Man", and "Six Underground" happen to be a few of his favorites
And yes I know it's a little cliche for a hashira, but you have to admit this dude wants to fight anything and everything half the time (albeit it's not his fault given what he's been through)
At least this gives him a healthy outlet just to at least watch people be eradicated in a way lol
As for his favorite horror movie, he likes the movie "Saw", the suspense gets him going and completely engaged in it
...
Shinobu:
Ol' girl definitely is a sucker for a feel good comedy
"Crazy Rich Asians", "The Devil Wears Prada", "A Dog's Purpose", and "Lala Land" happen to be a few of her favorites
Shinobu's job doesn't leave very much room for rejoicing half the time, especially when the corps loses someone so suddenly
So these types of movies give her a sense of hope, along with a good laugh here and there
As for her favorite horror movie, and idk if this is considered horror more than say a slasher film, but I headcanon she'd like "The Purge"
If she really wanted to, given her background, she'd eradicate everyone and everything in sight. But why do that when you can watch a movie about it? lol
...
Giyuu:
Mans has also been through some shit, but like Sanemi, it won't stop him from watching a good movie, specifically psychological thrillers
Movies, as stated before, like "The Prodigy", "Silence of the Lambs", and "Us" are a few of his favorites
He just likes the thrill of having to guess what comes next, it keeps his mind busy and focused on something other than his past
As for an actual horror movie, I think he'd like the movie "Annabelle: Creation" since Rengoku has talked his ear off about it so much that he gave in, watched it, and actually likes it lol
...
Rengoku:
Fire man loves a good movie about witchcraft
Yes witchcraft but nothing malicious
"Practical Magic", "Coven", and "Bewitched" happen to be some of his favorites
He has no real reason to like them, but he just likes how they're portrayed and how it proves that magic could basically be anywhere
He's also just a huge kid at heart so can ya blame him? Lol
As far as horror movies, he really likes "Childsplay", he just finds it fascinating how real life objects like dolls and even the most basic of items can be extremely haunted
...
Tengen:
Mans has three wives. So naturally rather than a singular movie, unless its like three hours long, he'd enjoy a movie series
He likes Marvel and DC movies, as well as the "Fast and Furious" series, "Lord of the RIngs" series, the "Narnia" series
Basically name any movie that has multiple sequels, he likes it lol
As far as an actual horror movie, he really likes "The Exorcist", maybe even going as far as "Evil Dead"
He likes something that will give him and his wives a good scare
......
Okayyyyyy that's that lol that took me way longer than I had anticipated. Who knew that this would wrack my brain to oblivion lmaooo. Regardless I hope you enjoy! Let me know what you want to see next!

came across your blog from that legally blonde post and saw you asking for recs on japanese language media- i’d be particularly interested in hearing your takes on films like female prisoner 701: scorpion (1972) or house (1977)
thank you so much for the recommendations, i really appreciate it! you're actually the third person to recommend house to me so i obviously need to bump this one my to watch list! but the synopsis of your other rec sounds really interesting, too.
i'm getting thru the list very slowly (surprise to no one but me: watching things with subtitles when you're either fluent in the spoken language or don't know it at all is really easy, but when you kinda half-know the language it's surprisingly difficult to juggle trying to wrap your brain around what's being said and keeping up with reading along lol. but hey, that's why i'm doing this. to improve on that.) so far i've only watched wolf children (made me sad but was really good, i have Big Feelings about the sister and her story in the narrative) and two episodes of mushishi (which i also liked). but i am chugging along lol and am annotating the list as i go with my opinions so i will mb ramble a bit about the ones that stuck out to me when i've made more progress :')
because idk if you can tell by the many words above but i have a tendency to ramble (sorry)

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a large fortune and a strong jaw must Batman.
My Personal Ranking of the live action Batman incarnations based on their Jawlines.
No. 9
Lewis Wilson - Batman [Theatrical Serial] (1943)
Tumblr media
Lewis Wilson was, of course the first on-screen portrayal of the Caped Crusader, so there's something that must be said for that, regardless of the fact that his story has little to do with the comics and his dialogue, being written in the middle of WWII was inevitably cringe regarding the Japanese villain of the story. War time propaganda notwithstanding, this serial did introduce many aspects of now standard Batman lore which were canonized in the comics following its release, such as the Batcave, and the characterization of Alfred we know and love.
But I'm not here to talk about any of that. I'm here to talk about Lewis Wilson's jaw. At the time his casting was praised for accuracy, even if his performance was found wanting. He looked like Bruce Wayne-- but for my money he just didn't have much going for him where it mattered. Since the jaw is the only exposed area of Batman's face, it counts for it to be distinctive and Wilson's just isn't.
No. 8
Robert Lowery - The New Adventures of Batman and Robin, the Boy Wonder [Theatrical Serial] (1949)
Tumblr media
Budget wise Robert Lowery got the short end of the stick when he literally took up the mantle from Lewis Wilson for the 1949 sequel serial, but he did benefit from a major reduction in the racial slurs in his script.
Jaw wise, Lowery isnt much of an improvement on Wilson. It was incredibly difficult for me to find a good picture but I'm willing to give lowery the edge.
No. 7
Christian Bale - Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Tumblr media
To be honest this is the only thing that's always majorly bothered me about Christian Bale's Batman. Perhaps the narrowness of his chin was why they felt the need to overcompensate so hard with the Batman Voice.
No. 6
Michael Keaton - Batman (1989), Batman Returns (1992)
Tumblr media
I love Michael Keaton. He's one of the broodier Bruce's, but he manages to carry that bit of whimsy that sets this Era apart. Crazy to think that these films were the first dark on-screen take on Batman when you compare it with the modern dark and gritty obsession.
Keaton's jaw isn't the strongest but like the movies and his performance you have to give credit where credit is due--it is distinctive.
No. 5
Ben Affleck - Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), The Justice League (2017)
Tumblr media
I've never seen either of these films, so I can't pass judgment on Ben Affleck's turn in the role, but then I've always considered Justice League Batman sort of different to regular Gotham flavored Batman, so I don't hold him to the same standards. Except in one area.
Not gonna lie, that's a formidable chin. He's got the dimple and everything. The rest of the actual JAW leaves more to be desired though, but we're definitely getting there.
No. 4
George Clooney - Batman & Robin (1997)
Tumblr media
I'm not a George Clooney fan in general. Quite apart from the hatefulness of this movie (and I DO hate it SO very much, for its wasted potential more than anything), I didn't really care for Clooney IN it. Perhaps it's because he's George Clooney (TM) but I find his range of performance very, very limited. Although he had some excellent scenes with Alfred, the writing everywhere else was not helping him, at all.
The one area where he can't be faulted, is of course the one I'm here to discuss. Now, No. 4 is pretty low, all things considered for a chin as renowned and impressive as Clooney's, but he is so low because that's not Bruce Wayne's jaw: it's George Clooney's.
No. 3
Val Kilmer - Batman Forever (1995)
Tumblr media
Now here's where we get into some real quality. What? No my love for Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne didn't influence my ranking. Perish the thought. Though I will say he did end up landing higher on this list than I thought he would.
What I really like about Kilmer's jaw is the clean lines. No distinct dimple on the chin, but that's made up for by the straight cut of the jaw as a whole. It's a bit softer, (and so, so pretty), but very reminiscent of Adam West. Which makes sense, given the influence the 60's TV show had on Batman Forever.
No. 2
Adam West - Batman (1966-1968)
Tumblr media
Speaking of straight cut jaws, get a look at that. Adam West's legacy looms heavily over every subsequent Batman, and I think that's with good reason. The mandible knows no distinctions in tone, it is a constant so no matter how far removed your Bruce Wayne is from the Camp and Circumstance of 1966, there's one standard by which all Batmen can be judged, and that my friends is the square cut gem pictured above.
No. 1
Robert Pattinson - The BATMAN (2022)
Tumblr media
One that certainly measures up to that standard, in my opinion THE ONE that even surpasses it, is Robert Pattinson's recent outing in the famous cape and cowl. Everything here is running in Battinson's favor: his cowl is the only one designed to give full exposure from corner to corner and I would like to kiss the costume designer because there's so much to be displayed here. What angles! Really God gave us a gift when he was sketching out RPatts. We've got the prominent chin, with dimple but not one deep enough to distract from the sharp angles of that jawline. If I was Selina Kyle I'd be afraid of cutting my hand.
