that adhd feel when your loved ones keep asking you to try harder to not be impulsive, but you can't even explain how much better you've gotten, how hard you try to not say everything on your mind, how hard you try to not explode when people hurt your feelings unintentionally, but god forbid you slip up once and then "we never see you make an effort." of course they don't see your effort- the impulses you try so so so hard to not act on stay inside your head. by nature successfully fighting an impulse is invisible, because trying and succeeding means you kept that shit to yourself and they were none the wiser. you're fighting a war against yourself in your head, but to them, it's just acting "normal." the standard for "visible effort" is acting neurotypical 100 percent of the time perfectly.

If you’re not actively femininely womaning or masculinely manning at all times you’re the third secret thing. But honestly it’s very obvious they think being a woman or man is something you actively do, rather than just a neutral state of being that is not affected by how much or little you think about it

That ADHD feel when you mention to someone how happy you are to have found a decent brand of frozen food so you don't have only garbage to eat on THOSE kind of days, and their response is 'oh why didn't you ask me I have a ton of super simple recipes for when you don't want to cook' and then they go 'just chop an onion and then...' No. Bless you and your neurotypical heart, mom, really. But you want me to interrupt my doom scrolling to *checks notes*
1. Find an onion that's miraculously still edible
2. Get the onion
3. Get a knife
4. Get a chopping board
5. Peel the onion
6. Throw away the peel (or live with the guilt of it just lying around on the kitchen counter for all eternity)
7. Chop the onion horizontally
8. Chop the onion vertically
9. Get a bowl
10. Put the onion in the bowl
11. Wash the knife
12. Put away the knife (or live with the guilt of it just lying around on the kitchen counter for all eternity)
13. Wash the chopping board
14. Put away the chopping board (or... you get the gist)
And then I'm STILL NOT DONE?!???
I'd really like to be able to JUST chop an onion, mom, but no. I'll take my frozen food thank you very much.

Overcoming Distractions | Thriving with Adult ADD/ADHD
“Why does a book like this need to be written? I’ll give you several reasons. First, take a few minutes and Google the phrase ‘What is ADHD?’ Here’s the answer: It’s Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. But as you scroll down, you’ll find one of the first reasons this book needs to be written: Many of the initial search results speak about children. They describe ADHD as a childhood disorder or childhood illness. The word ‘illness’ gets to me, but more on that later. Even the National Institute of Mental Health calls ADHD a childhood disorder and barely mentions the word ‘adult.’
...In writing this book, I talked to many people, including successful business owners, those who are successful in their respective careers, as well as ADHD coaches and a handful of highly regarded medical professionals in the field ofADHD. Overcoming Distractions is meant to be a street-smart approach to managing and thriving with ADHD. It’s not meant to be a medical book or to offer doctors’ advice... Successful people learn how to manage their environment and adapt, and that is no different than what someone with ADHD does to succeed. We can’t go to school and learn how to be a successful businessperson with ADHD. We need to learn from screwing up, and from those who have done it, and we need to create techniques that allow us to thrive. And that’s what this book offers.
...Thriving with ADHD is the result of a collection of techniques, tools, and self-regulation that helps adults with ADHD become successful and dependable to others. And I hope you learn those tools from reading on. Let’s do this!”

I could never figure out why I’m so lazy - but also always exhausted. I always try to make things right, just to get them wrong all over again. This is one of the things that really make me question myself.
