utena spoilers
revolutionary girl utena really is one of the only shows i can think of in which being groomed by an older man is seen as the traumatizing painful event that it is. i didnt think about it upon my first viewing, but it really does have the entire arc of how statutory rape happens. utena having sex with akio, and how distant she is from the action in her own head, it really is kind of scary how mundane the action feels
i think that anthy and utena both being victimized by the same man also makes their closeness and relationship in general so much more powerful and important. even when anthy ultimately betrays utena she still tries to save her, she still knows that these are actions of manipulation and pain
anthy is made to feel like nothing by akio and the people around her. anthy is slapped so often it becomes comical. she is, in the most literal sense possible, objectified. anthy exists as a pawn, something to be used, and it makes sense why anthy betrays utena for this reason - if anthy doesnt fulfill her duty as a sacrificial object, then what is the point of anthy's suffering?
maybe as a victim of grooming and statuatory rape thats why ive seen revolutionary girl utena more times than any other show. its not just that it tackles the subject and does it well, but it is a central theme that compliments utena's overall themes of manipulation and trauma
