OP--turned off reblogs and it is bad tumblr etiquette to try reblog it again, but I am sharing this with two cents cause I have opinions + media criticism credentials + done archivist historian work + my current wip centres largely around this nuance and the nuance of inherent human unreliability. See here, and here. Meaningful citation I am gonna quote a lot… also this is just my opinion having read Das Kapital and worked at a unions museum and being a historical fiction writer + gothic horror writer.

when I say "apologize" for Robespierre I don't mean take away his humanity or complexity. The same applies to Marie Antoinette as much as I don't like at all what she stood for or her irl views, she was still a person, as well Napoleon I Bonaparte (the first 'Liberal' Dictator) are all people, not necessarily 'moral' or 'good' people, and we don't have to erase their humanity to talk about how they were not 'good.'
As competent as Louis XIV nicknamed, Louis the Great (Louis le Grand) or Sun King (le Roi Soleil) for his competence and ability to win France's colonial wars (a thing shockingly-- historians of all political leanings agree upon), could've spared France and all of its citizenry a lot of hurt if he just took away the ancien regimes social powers but left them their titles etc. TLDR: if France became a constitutional monarchy none of the French revolution would've happened.
Robespierre was by no means an "avenging angel" but it is important to keep in mind most of what he fought for was warranted and he was the victim of a posthumous smear campaign.
I cannot possibly reiterate enough times just how messed up the ancien regime was, yeah, not all nobility had power or wealth, like country nobility. But, unless you are the bourgeoise new money, titled and wealthy or court nobility. You along with the 99.9% (who is not the clergy or the second estate) might as well be getting by on scraps, Dangerous Liaisons (the book) touches on this conflict a lot.
Historical fiction is by nature fiction it shouldn't be moralized differently from any other fiction.
The French (and by extension European + American) empires never really 'died' they just rebranded themselves a lot.

Music of the Revolutionary Century: Frenet Ha'
I was experiencing some doubt as to whether this tune was actually a Revolutionary War-era one, since the earliest notated record I've been able to find was published in 1796, but it seems like my doubts were incorrect! There is an earlier version of the song in David Herd’s Ancient and Modern Scottish Songs, published in 1776—a ballad called “Frennet Hall.” There’s no notated music attached to this publication, because most of these times these songbooks were published only as text, which was set to existing popular tunes. It was only toward the end of the 18th century that we see people moving in the direction of notated songbooks (which is not to say notated folk tunes didn’t exist—quite the opposite, in fact—but not so much in the form of published songbooks), hence the first instance of its notation occurring in the 1790s. I would assume that the tune existed before the Revolutionary era if it was standard enough to have text set to by the time the 70s came around.
The original text, though in what Traditional Tune Archive describes as "garbled and inaccurate" terms, tells the story of the burning of the castle of Frendraught ("Frennet"), allegedly set on fire by Lady Frendraught in the 17th century. This illustration is a 19th-century production, depicting Lady Frendraught scorned as the villain.
Tumblr media
This does not leave me entirely without questions as to the origin of the tune itself, but regardless, it's certainly no less a beautiful Scottish melody, well deserving of some more recognition. The 1796 version published by John Hamilton includes a different set of lyrics originally written by a Bauldie Scrimezour (what a name!), with additional verses written by Hamilton himself, and tell the story of a man who commits suicide to be with his dead lover. I can't find any performances which include the lyrics, which is a shame, because I find them rather beautiful—they're written in a Scottish dialect so they do require some parsing:
Quhair wile I lay my hede, Quhair lay my bodie doune, Qhairfor na am I died, Sen’ wandrin’ I bene bown; O! Marie ze war fairer than ony goud or gear; O! bot my hert is sairer than’t has bene mony zeir.
youtube
And now for the technical music stuff:
The James Aird version of this tune, which is essentially the one in the video, is actually in a A mixolydian, giving it its distinct kind of "floaty" harmonic quality, which I love. On the other hand, Hamilton's version is in G natural minor, but kind of achieves the same mixolydian effect by raising the sixth whenever it's a passing tone (which is half the time anyway). I don't have much to say about that except that it was interesting to see; I like the fully mixolydian version better for that extra bit of brightness—I feel this modified minor scale we have going on is a little too sinister for a tune so melancholic. Unfortunately for me, tinwhistles and mixolydian do not mix very well in the key of G, where, on that instrument, it's generally easiest to play.

Okay, so I'm absolutely curious:
I don't know if you've been asked this already, but how would you rank the Founding Fathers (from the ones you like the most to the ones you really don't)?
Sorry for taking forever I got sick and then I had school camp but here's how I'd rank them:
1, Alexander Hamilton: I've studied him the most out of the main founding fathers so I've grown rather attached to him. I still acknowlege his flaws like the fact that the trading charter he worked for when he was younger also sold slaves, the fact that he was sexist just like the typical 18th century man and that he did cheat on his wife. But even with all of those, he's my favourite of the bunch.
2. James Madison: when creating this tier list type thing I realised that I really don't know much about Madison that's why he's higher in the list (because I've studied him so little compared to the others, I don't know as much about his flaws and problematic actions as I do the rest of the bunch) I've read a lot about him doing silly things and supposedly being a good husband but the fact that he got along so well with Jefferson throws me off because I really don't like Jefferson. So yeah, I'd say I'm pretty neutral with Madison.
3. John Adams: I haven't studied him as much as the other founders (still more than Madison though) so I find it difficult to have too strong an opinion on him. I like his stance on slavery and the fact that he never owned any, however, I don't like his thoughts on women and men without property (and just generally the requirements he wanted to make on who should and shouldn't be allowed to vote) and I don't believe he was a very good father from what I've read about how he treated his oldest son, I also don't like his personality.
4. Benjamin Franklin: I know that no one is going to agree with me on this one but something about him just grosses me out, probably because I'm semi-sex-repulsed and hearing about the way he was with so many women makes me want to gag. Additionally, the comment he made about old women being the same in the dark grossed me out heaps. I get that he technically wasn't that bad and he freed his slaves and invented so many things but his personal life throws m
5. George Washington: Look, he did some HORRIBLE things, he owned many slaves, his treatment of Native Americans was terrible and I completely disagree with most of his political views... But I really like him as a military commander and a soldier and I like his personality a lot and that's why he ranks higher than the next person on this tier list, I don't agree with most of his actions. I don't support racism or genocide. But also I have far more fun studying Washington than I do the next founding father on this list.
6. Thomas Jefferson: child rapist, owned more slaves than any of the other people on this list (I think) and was really weird with his pets. He advocated for religious freedom and he was smart, I'll give him that but I don't like his personality, I don't like his political views and he was very hypocritical. Really, with his views, he wouldn't have even liked himself and he didn't do enough to make me like him. He's still interesting to study but I find it far harder to empathise with him than I do the men listed above because I really just can't see him as anything but vile.
Bonus!: I would put Aaron Burr between Adams and Madison because while I agree with most of his views and he's really fun to study, I like Hamilton a little bit too much to rank the man that killed him higher than 3rd.
(note: I wrote this on like an hour of sleep, this may be the worst amrev take ever)
Edited, 24th of February: Got reminded of this post's existence thanks to a comment by @c0ckmuncher pointing out how inaccurate one of these takes was and checked it again and safe to say I'm never posting anything late night ever again, the rankings have now been changed to better suit what I actually think of these men

My personal guide to finding very legally free and useful Amrev books
Pss, pss, you know what sucks?
Capitalism.
Anyway, if you're struggling to find Amrev books, or don't have the money, but still want to do research or maybe just find sources — here are some of my personal preferences and websites that I use;
Z-Library
The best option if you are looking for novels or biographies to read, honestly. Its pretty handy, and has your very average biographies you'd get recommended in many downloadable forms, and it's all safe too. The variety isn't grand or anything, but the options are wider and more modern than the rest of the examples I'm going to give.
Internet Archive
This is where I find biographies or books that are a lot older, and it's not as great as Z-Library in variety options, but it's still useful. And also in some cases it has facsimiles, so if you looking for pictures or writing; it's preferable.
Project Gutenberg
Not my personal favorite, I prefer IA more, but it has a wide library.
Library Of Congress
More preferable in cases of finding articles or really old books, and I find it better to use when looking for source material rather than an entertaining read.
Google books
Honestly my least favorite out of all these, but if you're looking for sources or records; GB has a better search engine than LOC. And it's usually where I find my quotes that I need. Unfortunately, it doesn't allow samples for every book, but its still useful in some cases.
-
If you have any suggestions to add to this list, be my guest!

Richard in t.urn is the only d.ilf safe on Astrid's radar in her amrev verse because even with the graying hair and money, she wouldn't want to be a step mom to A.be and spending one second with Richard at dinner would make Astrid want to kill him once he made a backhanded compliment at the table.

///Hello!
I came to Tumblr after Elon Musk shit on Twitter, and the community here blew me away. I immediately felt at home among some of the most creative and artistic people I’ve ever met.
My main blog is an account for my writing and poetry. I love the Misty account…but I just started it on a whim to interact with some of my favorite RP and amrev/history blogs.
Yesterday, a new account that I’ve had a few interactions experienced some anon hate, and it made them extremely uncomfortable. It made me uncomfortable as well.
The person behind the Misty account is a mom with a child in grade school and one in middle. The things I’ve seen my kids go through at school…the teasing, bullying, and general nastiness that’s increased after the pandemic. And with social media, kids are no longer able to leave that at school…the bullying comes home with them.
Let’s make Tumblr a place where even the weirdest, most eccentric and loneliest outcast feels at home. We all need a safe place, and I want my blogs to mirror that.
I know Thomas Jefferson is a complicated historical figure, and so are most of the Founding Fathers. Nearly all of them were slave owners, including Washington. We shouldn’t take it out on the person behind the account.
I’ve turned off my anon asks for a bit, and I’ll miss all the cute little anon asks (especially whoever sent me Crystal🪩!!). I’ll turn them back on soon.

( ooc ): As much as I like to baby Sean, he's not safe from angst in any of his au's. His main verse is full of angst anyway so it kind of bleeds into his other verses because I feel like his circumstances are what makes Sean who he is, I guess?
I have a skyrim verse, but it's not that fleshed out. I have a da verse I never really use, but his father also died in that one. In his amrev verse, his father was killed by a British soldier in a protest (similar to the one in Boston) and he almost died on a prison ship. So his hatred and anger towards the British (outside of how they treated the Irish generally, just with these events alone) is kinda justifiable in that regard.

I really need to read more about Kosciuszko! From what I know so far, he is so wholesome!
Indeed he is! Called "the purest son of liberty", he fought for freedom while befriending natives, for example check out his and prince Agrippa Hull friendship. In his last Will & Testament he wanted to free and educate as many slaves as possible. It's execution is a whole different story on many leves and I beg y'all to not flatten it into two sentences. Also he was a strong supporter of religion freedom (with which unfortunately Poland has problems till this day) as you have probably figured it brought him and Jefferson closer
Truly a man ahead of his time

In response to your request for asks: I'm always in the need for some Lams.
*bursts through door* DID SOMEONE SAY LAMS??? *collapses and catches breath*
Hello Jamie! I have...70 odd?? Lams fics bookmarked I think, so I’ll include a link to all of them here, which you can check out if you have no life (we all have tumblr accounts safe to assume none of us have lives)
https://ao3lamsbookmarks
(that’s all the lams fics I’ve ever bookmarked)
I’m not putting trigger warnings so please look through the tags before reading the fics
I’ll add my top ten fics/series here (also I don’t read smut/mature/explicit stuff so this is all g or teen or unrated)
1. Merited Partiality by clear_as_starlight (rated teen) (wip)
BEAUTIFUL. ONE OF THE BEST LAMS FICS I HAVE READ IN MY LIFE. This is one of the first long historical lams fics I’ve read, and basically made me fall in love with historical lams and amrev. It’s got angst, fluff, literally on spot characterisation, throws in historical events (there is some historical inaccuracy but like it’s fanfic soooo) and is just beautiful GO READ IT
2. Vieux Couple Marié by peblezQ (rated teen) (complete)
JUST SO FLUFFY UGH. My gays need some happiness and this was one of the fluffiest things I have ever read in my life. Historical lams, and the aides and gwash make appearances and it’s just very fluffy and rainbow and puppies.
3. Apsis by listlessness (rated teen) (complete)
This is a two part series and one of the best things I’ve ever read (like basically everything on this list lmao) but seriously go read it it made me feel things *shoos you to ao3* it’s two oneshots, the first is one scene which is just so *loses words* and the second is poetry which is after john dies and made my heart break
4. Scrapped Ramblings by peblezQ (rated teen) (complete)
ABSOLUTELY HEARTBREAKING GO READ THIS It’s basically Hamilton’s scrapped letters to Laurens and just really good-
5. Colors of Home. by fearless_seas (rated teen) (complete)
It’s just like, Alex missing John and there’s flashbacks and stuff, and he talks about how much he loves John (3rd pov tho) and like *chefs kiss* go read it nowwww the same author also wrote like the best halemadge fics in existence so their lams is just as good
6. converge/diverge by hydraxx (rated g) (complete)
Alexander’s letters to John after he dies. Alexander’s grieving, and remembering.
7. Operation Tortoise - Valley Forge by LittleWritingRabbit (not rated) (complete)
Basically a kind of five chapter slow burn where Hamilton and Laurens deal with their feelings for each other while also trying to keep their fellow gays (Steuben and gang) out of mischief and Lafayette and the aides being their hilarious selves.
8. Poetry for the hidden soldiers by CallMeCinza (orphan account) (unrated) (complete)
Just like....really good poetry. Got me close to crying. Historical lams, and its short but very good shoo go read it.
9. The Trials of Tench Tilghman by Sunnyrea(rated g) (complete)
Tench Tilghman finds out about Lams, and is burdened with keeping their secret. However, it becomes more of a burden than he thought. Poor Tench, go give him some love and read this.
10. The War of the Undead by Sunnyrea (rated teen) (complete)
Basically like what if there was a zombie apocalypse but like during the Revolutionary War. And a lot of people died. Almost made me cry.
Okay there were a lot more I wanted to add but then this tumblr post would be wayyyy to long. But yeah, hope you like these fics!

Retrouvailles
Fandom: Hamilton/AmRev/18th century RPF, Elams&Lafayette, Canon Era
Written for the server's group prompt challenge. Loosely based on this quote (loosely because it got away from me, as usual). Read it on AO3.
Georges slips out from Alexander’s hand on his shoulder when the passengers of the newly docked ship start disembarking. He’s anxious, but excited, his boyish enthusiasm still overwhelming the vague dread that pools in all their minds, the fear of what they might find. Alexander watches him bound up to the group of passengers trying to find their footing on land and immediately find the people he’s looking for. Two girls, one already a young woman and the other just a teenager, tightly holding hands. They’re both too thin, but they grin widely when Georges reaches them and engulf him in a hug.
Eliza’s breath itches when she sees the man standing behind them, clutching the railing for support. Alexander almost doesn’t recognize him. He’s aged, more than she imagined, his face thin and drawn. He’s of an age with them, but he looks much older. His clothes hang on his frame, and the lines around his eyes and his mouth tell a story of hardships that bring Alexander right back to the prisoners and the slaves he saw on the streets of Christiansted.
Almost reflexively, Alexander grabs Eliza’s hand for support. She sighs softly at his side, her expression mirroring her own. On Alexander’s other side, John swallows harshly. After so many years of worrying, the relief is overwhelming, but it doesn’t come close to extinguishing the guilt that feeds the flame.
They tried to tell themselves that it was the only way, that they couldn’t help their friend, that America couldn’t afford another war. They lent full support to Angelica’s effort to help Lafayette escape and they arranged for his back pay from the war to be approved by Congress, even collaborating with Jefferson to expedite it. They tried to tell themselves that it was enough. But what can truly justify leaving their friend to rot in prison half a world away, while they safely built a family and a country here?
Lafayette has his arm around a woman’s waist, supporting her. She looks tired and wan, although still young. Adrienne, Alexander assumes, Lafayette’s wife and Georges’ mother. Adrienne who, according to the letter Lafayette sent to warn them of his voyage, fell so ill in prison that she nearly couldn’t sail. Georges’ sisters seem healthier than either of their parents, but there are shadows in their eyes even as they embrace their brother.
Adrienne’s choice to join her husband in prison, along with her daughters, after most of her own family was executed by the terrorist government in France, seemed both incredibly courageous and heartbreaking to Alexander. He remembers discussing it with Eliza many times when they first heard it. He remembers Eliza whispering that she didn’t think she was that brave.
He remembers John murmuring that she would never have to make such a choice, but all three of them know the hard choices Eliza has made for her husband and for her family.
Alexander takes a deep breath and he walks closer to the thinning group of passengers, until Lafayette, who is now hugging his son, finally spots him. His eyes widen.
There’s a moment of bittersweet silence, years of absence flashing between them. Then Lafayette straightens and takes a step forward, leaving his wife to embrace their son. “Mes amis,” he says, his voice broken and thin but as warm as Alexander remembers.
John has joined Alexander, while Eliza remains one step behind. She formed her own friendship with Lafayette, years ago, off the battlefield in Albany, before Alexander even met either of them. She’s hesitant now, as if afraid that he won’t remember her, that time or difficulties will have erased those memories. Alexander wants to reassure her, but he doesn’t know how to reassure himself, even as he stares transfixed at his old friend.
With a smile on his face, Lafayette no longer looks like a shell of his former self. His face is full of shadows, but his eyes are as bright and alert as ever. Alexander’s fears of having lost his old friend fade away as Lafayette opens his arms to them, and Alexander and John gratefully fall into his embrace.
It’s almost like it used to be. The guilt still eats away at Alexander, but it can be addressed later.
“Bienvenue,” John says softly as Alexander is still trying to find his words. “It has been so long.”
Alexander closes his eyes in his friends’ embrace, and he takes a step to the side to bring Eliza into the fray. He swallows the emotions threatening to overwhelm him. Sixteen years since they last saw each other, since the war. Five of which Lafayette spent in prison, and his friends with hardly any news.
George Washington couldn’t make it to New York to welcome his adopted son, so Alexander takes it upon himself to do as he always used to do, and be his mentor’s voice. “Welcome to America,” he says. “Welcome home.”
