Chase getting lost in the woods with his kids (for whatever reason, you decide) and maybe a Half-Dryad!Reader sees them and helps them find their way out. And maybe the kids notice that their dad seems to kinda like the reader, and the reader kinda likes him, and they say something that a cute kid normally would. (Half-dryad b/c I think normal dryads can’t actually leave their grove/area of the forest, that way this one can move all over the forest and outside it).
Awww this is a v sweet idea! ^^
Hope you enjoy the story!
It wasn’t uncommon for you to hear the voices of humans in your forest. For the most part it was either hunters looking to take home some prize or teenagers camping out.
But…this time it sounded like the scared voices of a father and his two children.
All too often people got lost in these woods, although you’ve been too afraid to help them for fear that they’d kidnap you..as you weren’t…exactly human.
Rather, you were a half-Dryad. You wouldn’t really call yourself a normal Dryad because, unlike them, you were not bound to your tree and could freely move around and outside the forest.
But even so you couldn’t stray too far from it.
Back to the terrified voices, your heart broke a little when you heard one of the children start to cry, and the father trying to comfort her. And in that moment you knew that you couldn’t leave them to fend for themselves.
With a sigh, you stood up, stepping over the roots before you made your way to the sounds of distress.
Sure enough, you came across a young girl in a green sundress, a young boy in a grey sweater and jeans, and their father, a rather handsome man wearing a hat, grey shirt, and black jeans.
“Are you three lost?”
With wide eyes, they fell silent and turned to you, seeing this…beautiful woman with flowers growing in her hair, her eyes a sparkling green, her clothes being made from leaves and plants, and her arms and hands made entirely of tree bark.
The young girl, who was previously crying, stopped and gazed at you in wonder. “Wow…Daddy, look!” She smiled, tugging the sleeve of her father’s shirt. “It’s a forest fairy!”
You chuckled softly. Despite your fear of humans, you’ve always had a soft spot for children.
Seeing as there was no threat, you approached the three. “Yes..you would be right, my dear. “And I am here to help guide you back home. What are your names?”
“I’m Samantha,” the girl told you.
“Grayson,” the boy smiled at you.
However, their father seemed to be frozen in shock, as he was gawking at you. But he then shook his head. “S-Sorry..it’s ah..Chase…you…you’re actually a fairy?”
“More specifically…a half-Dryad,” you explained.
“A…half-Dryad?” He raised an eyebrow. “Why not a whole Dry-?”
“How about…we talk as I walk you back to civilization?” You proposed.
“…hm..alright. Fair enough. But thank you miss….?”
“[Y/n]. My name is..[y/n].”
……….
In the weeks that have passed since you’ve met Chase and his kids, they would often come back to visit you.
You’ve grown to trust them enough to show them where your main tree resided, and allowed them to eat some of the fruits and edible flowers that were on it.
Sam and Gray were always polite, asking you first for permission to pick something, so you could see that their father raised them well. He let them go to you on their own, as long as they were back by sunset.
The times that Chase did come to visit you, you got to know him better. He was a man who made YouTube videos for a living, but because of it he’s had some…rough marital problems that left him depressed at times, often to the point of coming to you crying.
But you would make sure he forgot about his troubles by offering him petals to eat that made him somewhat inebriated, talking about your life as a forest nymph, or simply letting him lay down in your lap as you hummed gentle songs and pet his hair.
Either way you always made sure that when he left you for the day, he left happy and relaxed.
Least to say you were glad to finally have some company and not live in loneliness and fear everyday.
……….
“I think Daddy might like you,” Samantha said one day as she was sitting in your lap, allowing you to decorate her brown hair with blue and green flowers.
You blinked in surprise, blushing slightly. “O-Oh? You think so? Well…we Dryads have our ways of charming men. But…isn’t he married?”
“Well, our parents actually divorced,” Gray muttered in reply as he was petting a deer that was close to your tree. “It’s…a little confusing but..we’re only here because he convinced our mom to let us stay with him for a month.”
“So she and him must not love each other anymore, huh?”
“Yeah, not too much,” Sam frowned slightly. “And it makes him really sad…a long time ago he..hurt himself really badly and we..d-didn’t think he’d wake up..but….” She looked at you with a smile. “Ever since we met you he’s been happier.”
Your heart melted at her words. Truth be told…you found yourself to developing a crush on Chase as well. All you wanted was for him to be happy and for him to know that he was loved.
But maybe, just maybe…it was time that you told him how you truly felt, as, besides Sam and Gray, he was the only human you could trust.
“I see..well..” You picked her up, standing up before you set her back on the forest floor. “If he’s not busy, how about you bring him to me and we’ll talk about it? Because I, too, have…something I wanna share with him.”
The two siblings exchanged glances, grinning, before they quickly rushed back home to retrieve their father.
……..
As you hoped, you looked up and saw Chase approach you. You smiled gently, although it faltered when you noticed his solemn expression.
With a gentle sigh, you moved over and patted the spot beside you, encouraging him to sit with you among the entangled roots. He did so as he carefully stepped over them and sat down.
You tenderly rubbed his back, feeling how tense the muscles were. “Are you okay, hun?”
“S-Stacy called and said..she wanted the kids back by tomorrow a-afternoon,” he looked at you, tears filling his eyes. “I-I don’t know what to tell them..th-they..they love you a lot and…I don’t know how long i-it’ll be before they can see you a-again..” His voice cracked.
“Hey..it’s okay.” You hushed, bringing him close as he began crying into your shoulder. “It might be a long time, Chase..but it won’t be the last time. I promise. And they know that, too. So please..try not to stress over it. Before you know it you’ll have them back.”
He nodded in response, hugging you back. “Th-Thank you, [y/n]…you…y-you always know what to say….these past f-few weeks you’ve..helped me more than you realize.”
You smiled, kissing his head and calmly stroking his hair. “Of course, darling. I love you and I care about you a lot.”
“…w-wait..what..?” Chase lifted his head up, gazing at you in confusion. “Did…y-you say you…love me..?”
“Yes..? Is that…not what humans say when they wish to confess their love?” Your eyebrows furrowed slightly.
“I-I mean..yeah but..usually we’re not bold enough t-to say it like that,” he chuckled softly. “But I….I-I do, too.” A slight blush appeared on his face.
For a few moments you just stared at each other, but it wasn’t too long before you both started to giggle like children. Then you leaned in and kissed him on the cheek. “If you want I can go home with you to keep you company..”
“Are you sure you can..?”
“Yes. Since I’m half-Dryad I can leave the forest if need be, although I can’t stray too far from it.”
“Well..lucky for you my house is right on the edge,” Chase grinned. “It should be fine.”
You nodded in agreement, smiling as the two of you got up and began the trek to his house, hand-in-hand.
