this page below is so firmly entrenched in my mind that it made me forget Ashiyama technically did not come up with Kosuzu
Tumblr media
the more melancholic takes both on her, on Akyuu and generally on the village just work better for me than the FS originals did. I also think the two old men, the doctor and the tea house girl were better additions to it than the tiresome FS fan favorite, the fortune teller. While I would definitely classify Human Gensokyo - and Ashiyama’s Touhou works in general - as relatively speaking “dark,” they do not really tap into the cheap shock value that many popular “edgy” doujin authors often rely on (Zounose, lol). At least form me, ultimately “if you weren’t born a noble your life will suck” is a much more effective source of unease than “yokai eat humans lol.” It’s obviously not quite the same - ultimately Ashiyama’s Gensokyo is meant to be melancholic more than edgy. Ashiyama mentioned at one point on twitter that they are a fan of either Takemitsu Zamurai or the mangaka behind it - sadly I can’t find the tweet rn (might have been deleted since?), but I think that would explain a lot both about their unique art style about this specific sort of melancholic portrayal of the feudal era focused on characters getting the short end of the stick in it.

forbidden scrollery is my recommended intro to touhou mostly because it helps you realize just how incredibly abnormal our protagonists are for humans. this will save you a lot of grief in interpreting things later

here's the thing about choice. making decisions. a lot of youkai are probably fairly new to the whole thing. i'd say that most of them didn't even really Think before the barrier went up, and even then it's probably been gradual. it's why a lot of the lesser youkai are still fairly creature-ish. human friendship level low
and i think there's a genuinely intriguing idea to them becoming more human as time goes on - the human-like youkai and youkai-like humans of gensokyo. would that threaten their nature as youkai? would it make them something else? they're interesting ideas, y'know
but there's a flipside to this. which is to say that there are a bunch of really old youkai who have been able to think for a good few centuries. potentially millennia. and almost all of them have far worse social skills than the small fry. there is great meaning to this, also

I think Ashiyama deserves a medal for spelling the quiet part out loud. This was so based and the only valid reading of these two in my head. He's not a step-dad just a dad who stepped up etc etc

No matter the form, Eri still has the same scent, being human and not youkai, and all, so he can't tell the difference.
... So his shapeshifting is pretty useless in Gensokyo-

Among your current translations. Would you say that 'The Tiles That I Cannot Cut Are Next to None!' is the most difficult Touhou manga you've had to translate given all the technical usage of rules surrounding Mahjong. Or Gensokyo of Humans with the troublesome quotes?
That's actually a surprisingly interesting (?) question.
Gensokyo of Humans definitely stands out as the harder one in my mind, but that's because it sometimes required me to stop work for several hours at a time to try and figure something out. Even if usually all I could/needed to do was copy an existing English translation, some of the ones that were, like, Old Japanese translations of Chinese books even required me to cross-reference the Japanese, Chinese and what English translations I could get just to find the correct part to copy. (I also do not understand Chinese.) Many Touhou doujins have required me to do actual translations of Japanese poetry (poor ones, I'm sure) that were far less work than this.
Meanwhile, with Tiles, the lookups are constant, but individually fast and pretty straightforward. I couldn't play much mahjong at all if you plopped me down at a table (mostly I’ve been lazy about learning yaku), but I know the rules well enough to follow along and check whatever I don't get. I also have two more mahjong-savvy people to ask for consultation and check the finished chapters for me; mostly to figure out the most natural terms for certain things in English.
Ironically, by far the lengthiest lookup I've had to do with Tiles was tracking down Akyuu's Records of the Three Kingdoms reference in chapter 18. This little savant l'enfants in the computer vexes and haunts me.

I think youkai would die from mass spiritually charged attacks such as 'stepping on legos'

i used to kind of hate rinnosuke from touhou since his existence as one of the few men meant insanely bad het pairings for just about any and every girl, but i think it’s just much funnier for him to be the one gay guy in a world full of insane supernatural lesbians. no wonder his hair is white, imagine the stress this fruit is under

I think common Fanon is that Alice is Shinki's adopted daughter, and that Alice moved to Gensokyo when she grew up. Since Alice didn't turn into a youkai IN Gensokyo, it's not a big deal, as youkai migrate to Gensokyo all the time.
Fair assesment; that's kinda what I ended up thinking too. Though, I wonder if this means we'll never get any sort of persistent "human turned youkai" character anytime soon since reimu is quite serious about actually exterminating them.

gensokyo's charm point is that it's not so much scary as just kind of weird and unsettling, really. if it's actively hostile then it reduces the like... the good will, i suppose, towards the setting. it's almost crucial that it's not merely trying but succeeding to be good, and that part of that Being Good is that most of the youkai are basically just doing what kogasa does but being better at it bc they all have knives
also the zounose approach works but you have to Commit to it and honestly i've only ever seen zounose commit to it in the right way
