Burning fossil fuels, which releases carbon pollution into the air and causes our world to overheat, is the number one cause of the climate chaos we’re facing. 2024 may be even hotter than 2023, resulting in even more catastrophic weather.

But there is still hope. Those with power must act now, and the insurance industry holds more power than most to slow the crisis and protect our future. Without insurance, fossil fuel projects can’t operate. If insurance companies updated their policies and refused to insure new fossil fuel projects, there would be no new oil pipelines, liquefied natural gas terminals, or dirty coal mines. If they focused instead on insuring clean, safe energy and a just transition, our communities and our world would be safer for current and future generations.

The insurance industry’s role is to protect and manage risk, but right now it is failing spectacularly at both. Instead of protecting communities, it’s adding fuel to the fire by continuing to insure new fossil fuel projects. The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) is a prime example. This proposed pipeline would run 1,443 kilometers between Hoima in Uganda and Tanga in Tanzania, but the project has stalled as it has not yet secured full insurance and financing due to the many human and environmental rights abuses associated with it. These include the harassment and imprisonment of peaceful protesters, the disturbing of sacred burial grounds, and the forcible removal of communities to make way for the pipeline. If EACOP gets insured and goes ahead, it will cross 200 rivers and pass through Lake Victoria’s water basin. Over 40 million people depend on the lake for survival, as well as countless animal species; if the pipe leaks and spills oil into the water, what will happen to them?

The corporations behind EACOP say it will “unlock East Africa’s potential,” but let’s be clear: It is neocolonialism at its best, and the only ones who will gain are the foreign companies set to profit. It only made sense that they would not necessarily always suffer their insomnia at the same time, yet he’d not deny the disappointment that had lingered in his chest when the reality of a long, lonely night stared him in the face. Even the hot water he boiled upon the stove and drank plain hadn’t washed it away. That had been ten days past, and in those nine intravening nights Deepak’s dreams had only been bad enough to wake him for moments of sweaty confusion rather than hours of agonising fear. This night, however, had seen the return of true horror.

Perhaps it had been the anxiety of preparing to move Lord Conway and his mother to London that had done it. Perhaps it had been the smash of a bottle dropped earlier in the kitchen. Or maybe it had simply been overdue, for a week without waking to a yelp or scream was quite uncommon for Deepak. Either way, he had fallen asleep on the 4th of May only expecting a few gasps or fear, and maybe a lingering sense of upset in the morning. The days were long recently, what with selecting what of Lord Conway’s wardrobe to bring to London and making sure that everything was packed appropriately. Sleep was not hard to come by when you were exhausted from pressing clothes and polishing cufflinks, not to mention going over the altered seams of Lord Conway’s shirt once more (in backstitch, for Deepak was not too proud to admit that Zahir Qureshi had been right). Alas, rather than a night of simple tossing and turning, Deepak had suffered much worse.

It had been the fall to his floor which had woken him, rather than the terror, or his whimpered cries. Though asleep, Deepak’s body had tried as much to scramble away from the Baron as his dream-self had, only to become tangled in his sheets and meet the hard floor of his bedroom. For several moments he had been a gasping, crying mess, not knowing where he was, or what it was that had bound his legs so tightly, or why he hurt so much on his hip and shoulder. It was only when his mind had balanced its sleep-addlement and his panic that he worked out where he was. After extricating himself, after splashing his face with tepid water from his basin, after changing his bed-shirt into one less soaked with sweat, he had tried to face writing down the nightmare in the journal he kept for Doctor Zachariah. And he had been completely unable to do so.

So he headed for the kitchen, for a room that did not stink of his fear but of dinner. For a place in which company might be had. And as he approached and saw a spill of light over the ancient flagstones, he knew he had found some.

“Hello.” It seemed a silly thing to say, standing in the doorway to the kitchen in his nightclothes and slippers and wrapped in his coat to stave off the cold. But Miss Marian deserved to know he was there, that he was joining her. Besides ‘good morning’ was entirely inappropriate, for they must both know it was not good, and neither was it really morning. Deepak awkwardly blinked in the light of a lit lamp, his fingers near-trembling where they clutched his coat. “May I join you?”

Symphony no. 1 The Lord of the Rings (Orchestral Version)

Johan de Meij’s first symphony “The Lord of the Rings” is based on the trilogy of that name by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book has fascinated many millions of readers since its publication in 1955. The symphony consists of five separate movements, each illustrating a personage or an important episode from the book.

The movements are:

I. GANDALF (The Wizard)

II. LOTHLORIEN (The Elvenwood)

III. GOLLUM (Sméagol)

IV. JOURNEY IN THE DARK

The symphony was written in the period between March 1984 and December 1987, and had its première in Brussels on 15th March 1988, performed by the “Groot Harmonieorkest van de Gidsen” under the baton of Norbert Nozy. In 1989, The Symphony The Lord of the Rings was awarded a first prize in the Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition in Chicago, and a year later, the symphony was awarded a grant by the Dutch Composers Fund. In 2001, the orchestral version was premiered by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra.

Although it is not simple to summarize such an extensive and complex work, the main outline is als follows: the central theme is the Ring, made by primaeval forces that decide the safety or destruction of the World. For years it was the possesion of the creature Gollum, but when the Ring falls into the hands of the Hobbits the evil forces awake and the struggle for the Ring commences. III. GOLLUM (Sméagol)

The third movement describes the monstrous creature Gollum, a slimy, shy being represented by the soprano saxophone. It mumbles and talks to itself, hisses and lisps, whines and snickers, is alternately pitiful and malicious, is continually fleeing and looking for his cherished treasure, the Ring.

IV. JOURNEY IN THE DARK

The fourth movement describes the laborious journey of the Fellowship of the Ring, headed by the wizard Gandalf, through the dark tunnels of the Mines of Moria. The slow walking cadenza and the fear are clearly audible in the monotonous rhythm of the low brass, piano and percussion. After a wild persuit by hostile creatures, the Orks, Gandalf is engaged in battle with a horrible monster, the Balrog, and crashes from the subterranean bridge of Khazad-Dûm in a fathomless abyss. To the melancholy tones of a Marcia funèbre, the bewildered Companions trudge on, looking for the only way out of the Mines, the East Gate of Moria.

V. HOBBITS

The fifth movement expresses the carefree and optimistic character of the Hobbits in a happy folk dance; the hymn that follows emanates the determination and noblesse of the hobbit folk. The symphony does not end on an exuberant note, but is concluded peacefully and resigned, in keeping with the symbolic mood of the last chapter “The Grey Havens” in which Frodo and Gandalf sail away in a white ship and disappear slowly beyond the horizon.

Archie Alphonso Alexander (May 14, 1888 – January 4, 1958) was a mathematician and engineer. He was an early African-American graduate of the University of Iowa and the first to graduate from the University of Iowa's College of Engineering. He was a governor of the US Virgin Islands. He began his engineering education at the State University of Iowa. When the three colleges merged Highland Park College became part of Des Moines College. He went to Des Moines College and attempted to join the white-only American football team there, but he was declined. As a result, he played tackle from 1910 to 1912 and was nicknamed “Alexander the Great”. During the summer he worked as a draftsman for Marsh Engineers, a Des Moines bridge-designing firm, and in 1912, he received a BS, becoming the University of Iowa's first black football player and engineer. He worked as a foreman for a bridge-building company before going into business for himself. Continuing his education at the University of London, he studied bridge design and obtained a BS in Civil Engineering from the State University of Iowa. He formed Alexander & Repass. They were responsible for the construction of many roads and bridges, including the Whitehurst Freeway, the Tidal Basin Bridge, and an extension to the Baltimore–Washington Parkway. With his business partner, George Higbee, he designed the Tuskegee Airfield and the Iowa State University heating and cooling system. He was appointed as one of a 12-member commission to investigate the social and economic conditions in Haiti. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Engineering by Howard University.
