oc new years challenge 2023~2024 ⇝ day two

this is a remake of a gifspam about a year old, it's under the cut along with some notes about Mirage's evolution!!

Mirage Mirage Mirage... when I first created her, I simply wanted a self-insert oc to ship with Five bc I am In Love with the grumpy old man. As I delved deeper into her relationship with Five though, I realized that I had to give Mirage her own problems and challenges, she couldn't just be Five's lover because in my interpretation of his character, Five isn't the kind of person to just fall in love with a pretty sassy girl, he has to be able to connect with the person, and he has to have a love interest that's competent in their own way, being able to stand up on their own two feet without Five coddling their every move. The first-ever ideas for Mirage were basically just "Kaz Brekker but make her do government-ish stuff, assassin, targeted by the Handler and nearly gets killed by her, aversion to touch" Absolutely no notes on her relationship with the other two kids that were adopted by AJ -- Emmy and Telepath -- and an entire google doc dedicated to her and Five oneshots

yeah, I was whipped af lol

but after some time, in which I poked around in other fandoms and got "better" at creating backstories and motivation, I circled back to Mirage. I started thinking about what could've turned someone who was groomed to be AJ's successor, someone who was only taught the basics of fighting before the Handler came, into an assassin who bided her time until she could finally regain control of the Commission? I realized something that was very much inspired by a certain Marvel show that someone might have heard me complaining that I neglected the plot bunny I made for it (I swear I'll do it next year) was literally perfect for Mirage, it's a play on her name and power, and it fills in all the plot holes I ignored in the first few drafts of her story. So yeah, that's basically the story of Mirage's evolution, along with her faceclaim change due to me admitting that pairing someone in their late twenties with a teenager is just... weird and uncomfortable to me lol; Mirage is one of the first ocs I ever introduced on here, and she's also one of my most constant brainworms, like literally I can talk about her any time and place because there's so much to share about her asldaksda

I finally figured out how to make a crest for the Magnolia Academy in the same style as the Umbrella and Sparrow ones! Far from perfect but I’m pretty proud.

Here’s what each symbol means:

Magnolia Branch: The Academy name

Knot: Family loyalty

Apple: Generosity, happiness, peace and salvation

Bear: Healing, personal health, strength, and bravery. Also a nod to Grace’s “mama bear” attitude toward her kids

The motto, "florere quocumque tempore," means "bloom at any time"

she works for the temps commission because the handler hired her as her bodyguard since dawn had superpowers and was one of the cool babies

her superpower is pretty shitty though and it harms her tremendously since she can only use it by directly touching things in order to turn them either hot or cold so if she actually tries to harm another person she can (and will) get a second degree burn herself lol

though in s2 she probably had an upgrade which allowed her to use her powers from the distance

she loves doctor who and was happy to work for the temps commission though it turned out not as cool as she though it would be

dawn has very warm relationships with her mom and she was incredibly sad to leave her for a job so she sends her cute pics of herself and postcards from places she visits with the handler :(

Backstory and powers.

Belladonna Hargreeves was born in a small town in Chile to a loving Chilean mother and an American father. From a young age, Belladonna displayed an unusual ability to control shadows and darkness. This unique power intrigued her parents, but they struggled to understand it.

When Sir Reginald Hargreeves, the enigmatic billionaire, began to adopt children with extraordinary abilities to create the Sparrow Academy, he caught wind of Belladonna's unique talents. Her parents, fearing the dangers of her powers, agreed to let her join the Sparrow Academy in the hope that she could receive proper training and guidance.

Belladonna quickly became the 8th sibling of the Sparrow Academy. Reginald believed that her power had the potential to be an asset to his new team, as it offered a balance to the other members' abilities. Belladonna's power allowed her to manipulate shadows, moving unseen and striking from the darkness. In addition to her control over darkness, her aging process was significantly slowed due to her abilities, making her appear much younger than she actually was.

Day 19: This Won't Hurt A Bit

Joy Hargreeves left home for a reason. Multiple reasons, but none were as important as keeping her baby safe. She knew that her father only adopted her and her siblings because they had powers. He wanted to know where they came from. But now all but one had abandoned him, with no more opportunities to run tests and gain notoriety.

She thought she had hidden her pregnancy well enough. She should have known Reginald would find out. Before Joy can defend herself, she's been snatched away on her way home from the dance studio. Two weeks of a drugged haze is what follows.

As her siblings desperately search for her, Joy has to try to clear her mind and make it out of the decrepit hospital before her father can steal her son and make her life the same living hell as hers.

Home Is Where The Haunt Is ft. Mirage Veracity Carmichael

Telepath was gone, ran the second the news of AJ's death rang through their house's telephone. Emmy had left, the one that managed to slip through the Handler's disgusting claws. Veracity was left with an empty house and empty illusions, locked in a cage with too many memories and too little substance for her to survive on... though, the voice in her had stopped yelling for a while now, so at least she had one less thing to go mad about. The only thing keeping her sane was puzzling about where these scrapes and cuts came from... she was locked in and closed off from the outside world, so how would she have gotten hurt? Without even realizing it, no less -- did she have a sleepwalking problem and no one ever thought to tell her? Or was the Commission out to get her even in her sleep?
