Festive Fun and Surprises: Yalwa’s 2023 Christmas Party
Tumblr media
The holiday season is a time for warmth, cheer, and get-togethers. 2023 was no different as we entered the beautiful Villa im Tal for an evening of excitement and entertainment!
The location was just north of our head office, but we felt like we had been transported to a real Christmas world, located in the beautiful Adamstal forest. As we arrived, the picturesque scene was complete with a stunning sparkling tree and the air was filled with the inviting aroma of Glühwein. Laughter and conversations echoed around as colleagues gathered, sipping on warm drinks and soaking in the festive ambience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As we moved indoors, Klaus our CEO graced the gathering with a heartfelt speech, setting the tone for an evening of togetherness and appreciation. Now we were ready to see what the party had in store for us! So what was next? Well, our first surprise was ready to take to the stage. We were treated to a remarkable performance by two of our talented colleagues on guitar and vocals, as they surprised us with two songs from Alicia Keys and Adele — who knew they were so talented not just at work, but at music!
Tumblr media
Whilst we recovered from the melodic sing-song, the festivities continued with the appetiser, setting the tone for the night as we tucked into the start of our delicious dinner. Then we were ready for one of the main highlights — a charity raffle that brought all the thrills and also embodied the essence of giving. The winners were treated to fantastic prizes, some of which were handcrafted by our very own employees and others donated by local partners. Not only did we have a lot of fun, but this allowed us to extend support to the noble cause of Löwenmut, as all the funds raised from the raffle were donated to them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We were then so excited about the main course that awaited us — it was hungry work, waiting in anticipation for the raffle results! The main dish was crafted to perfection and enjoyed by every corner of the room. Once we finished this course of our culinary delights, another surprise awaited — a guest that truly epitomises the essence of Christmas — Santa Claus himself! His arrival filled the air with curiosity and cheer and to everyone's delight, he graced us with a merry tune, spreading a festive buzz.
Tumblr media
A dedicated corner of the restaurant transformed into a winter wonderland, tailored for capturing festive fun with Santa, with colleagues posing for pictures of this special encounter. And to top it all off, each of us received a delightful Christmas present from the jolly old man himself — he really was the real Santa Claus!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As the evening drew to a close after our flavoursome dessert, we continued to catch up with dear colleagues, making some of the final memories of the year. The warmth of shared moments, and the spirit of giving lingered, capturing the true essence of the holiday season. Our Christmas party was not just an event, it was a celebration of unity, generosity, and the unwavering joy that comes from being part of Yalwa.
Tumblr media
With hearts full of gratitude and memories to cherish, we bid goodbye to yet another remarkable Christmas celebration, eagerly awaiting the magnificent moments that the coming year shall bring. Here's to the spirit of Christmas and the everlasting bonds that make each celebration at Yalwa truly extraordinary!

So I got my wisdom teeth removed which means I’ve been sitting in bed binging kpop content as one does when they have a mouth full of gauze and I may or may not have listened to Gambler by Monsta X for like the past two hours on loop so I’m curious what your opinions on it were. I think I saw somewhere that you had plans to put out a post on it but I’m assuming you got busy with other stuff unless I missed it then it that case ignore me.
I’m very glad that I.M continues to be horny on main. For the longest time, I thought his line was “Hard as F” instead of “Hot as F” and I did not question it. Monsta X are really the only group that are allowed to have absolutely random and incomprehensible English lyrics (and also maybe Lucas). Like “I’m a handsome sum of money”, “my suit is black, my suit is fresh”, “Zero, Zero Lucky Bang”. I don’t know what that means but they say it so well that I don’t care. The intro to the song was interesting with the monotonous singing and I was a bit worried until that electric guitar started and IM and Kihyun’s parts and then I was absolutely sold. That bridge with the “she’s gone” part and the final chorus absolutely kills me like this song just continuously gets better and better and builds and builds and it’s so satisfying. It’s 4 minutes long and it feels it but in the best way? Like it toys the line between being too long but having enough interesting, different things in there. I’m of the opinion that this is Monsta X at their finest. Like they are such a consistent group and they know exactly what is expected of them and they delivery every time.
i hope you are recovering from your wisdom teeth surgery!! i got mine out when i was 17 and it was awful. i couldn't eat real food for two weeks and now i can't drink protein shakes without getting war flashbacks
you are correct i am going to talk about gambler! however i did kind of re-jig what i wanted to talk about about it, which is a very weird sentence to type out and read back in my head. i originally wanted to talk about the steadicam work in the music show stages, because it was one of the first comebacks that i've seen that in this year, but then over the last month or so there's been a whole bunch of steadicam stuff so i was compiling it all to make into one bigger post talking about several different songs/groups. but then also someone sent me an ask about want and then i got a bit off the rails because you know me and taemin, so this actually gives me a chance to talk about some of the other stuff in the gambler mv that i found interesting!
i do agree (and i've said this before) that mx is one of the most consistent groups active right now. they've established a really strong group brand that's been relatively consistent across their korean promotions and it's a look that really works for them as an "older" idol group (they're not old, it's just that they're not 22). although their mvs have usually been very sharp and well styled, i think these last three (korean) comebacks (fantasia, love killa, gambler) have had the strongest aesthetic and thematic unity, in addition to branching out a bit more from the general visual structure of a kpop mv. a thing that happens sometimes with kpop mvs is that the performers don't look like they belong in the sets; this happens most frequently with white/black voidspaces, but it also happens when, for example, they're out dancing in an empty dilapidated warehouse wearing pristine tailored suits. but the fantasia mv is practically draconian in it's commitment to colour palette and ornament, so by sheer visual force everything is integrated. love killa has a very cinematic and referential style without being overly obnoxious about those references. and gambler follows along the same vein as love killa but goes that extra bit further. i would not be surprised to find out that these are all directed by the same person.
to answer the question that you were not really asking, a fair amount of lyrics are referential to james bond. so the "my suit is black, my suit is fresh" -> famous for the traditional black suit/white shirt combo. "zero zero lucky bang" -> zero (0) zero (0) lucky (number 7) bang (the famous shot from the gunbarrel intro). "i got a vesper martini" -> a type of martini that the bond girl from casino royale is named after (vesper lynd), also martini (shaken, not stirred). it's obviously not a 1:1 because the mv takes more from bank heist tropes than strict spy tropes, but there's enough crossover that the comparison still works! another good example of using an existing property for spice rather than as the sole theme.
gambler, like fantasia, has a very strict colour palette, and does a really great job of integrating costume into enviroment. it's not perfect, since i think in the cinematic language that they're trying to establish the leather looks are a bit kpop, but i don't really have a real complaint about them because if mx can do anything, they can pull off leather. but in every other look, they look like they belong in those environments. it helps that a lot of it was filmed on location in (i think?) a hotel, so there was an oppotunity to match the style of the suits to the architecture and decoration of the preexisting rooms, as well as doing additional set dressing.
it's kind of interesting looking back at their mvs, prior to 2020 they were very focused on the performance/dance element of the mvs, which tracks because their performance and presence is one of their stronger traits. but the last three comebacks, which have been post pandemic and post wonho, have spent more time on creating a different viewing experience with the mvs, and then leaving their music show stages + other performances to pull out the big guns (shownu's arms).

“I Think It’s Time For Me To Move On”
...And Other Things That Have Destroyed Me This Weekend...
So there is this common trope within love stories which generally happens at the end of the second act in which everything goes wrong and we all think that the lovers are doomed to failure. Its pretty much standard in every Jane Austen novel, every romantic film every made, every single bloody love story. Go ahead, name one. I guarantee you the break up moment is there.
Within the epic love story of Dean and Cas, there have been many break up moments, and all have had their emotionally devastating impact on the relationship and the show...
But THIS was a different level.
(For a nice summary of Destiel break up moments and understanding of this trope, @tinkdw wrote about it here.)
I didn’t think that there would be another moment within Dean and Cas’s relationship that could hit me this hard. The mixtape in 12x19, the wrapping of Cas’s body in 13x01, and the return of Cas in 13x05 are moments that I consider to be the very top of the scale in making this pairing undeniably romantic. Moments that pushed it beyond a platonic interpretation. These three moments have been the things I cling to when the show has otherwise made me doubt any conclusion to the DeanCas story, and since there hasn’t been another one of those moments since 13x05, until now I have been somewhat nervous that the story was dropped, or being forced back behind a platonic screen.
15x03 has ripped that screen away.
Emotional meta under cut...
This entire episode was an emotion fuelled dramatic roller-coaster that killed off three characters including our beloved witch queen in a scene that almost stole the show and practically canonised the SamWitch ship. Rowena’s death should have been by far the most torturous moment for viewers to endure, and it was extremely torturous and had me sobbing on a plane 3 hours into a 7 hour flight. That incredibly heartfelt moment between Sam and Rowena will probably go down as one of the top tear-jerking moments on this show. It was tragic in the best way - the way Supernatural is famous for.
But lets not gloss over the fact that in an episode where THAT should have been the climax, where THAT should have been the emotional highlight and end point, instead we get a further MORE dramatic stand off between Dean and Cas that pulled focus and ripped all of our hearts out just as violently as poor Ketch in the first act (a very clever and smug piece of meta foreshadowing there Mr Berens).
On a meta level, this is HUGE as a writing choice because they MUST know how this looks. This was the climax of the third episode of the finale season. The way Supernatural has always structured itself since Carver era is that the first three mytharc episodes of each season establish the direction of the story and set the foundations for the character level focal points and dramatic key notes to come.
That the writers have chosen to end the foundation episodes with a DeanCas break up moment that was more dramatic than a Spanish Telenovela has just stunned me and left me reeling because I just can’t see how else this can go. This break up scene absolutely DEMANDS a huge reconciliation of the sort that will be part of the A plot of the season - the FINAL SEASON. Guys. Part of the reason I have been so quiet and so disillusioned with the show during late season 13 and season 14 was because they pushed any Destiel plot into non existent territory - it became kinda irrelevant and Dean and Cas just acted like friends (homoerotic friends yes, and sometimes like an old married couple, but it was mostly played as an afterthought imo), so for this to suddenly be brought to the forefront of the emotional story again is excellent news for us.
The thing is, like with those huge moments I listed above, the break up scene is basically undeniably romantic when you break it down to its components:
1. It’s only Dean and Cas.
Once again we have another scene of high stake emotions that excludes Sam. In a platonic reading of the show, it makes zero sense for there to be such a hugely disjointed relationship between Cas and Dean and Cas and Sam given he has known them both for so long now that if they were all “just friends” then surely Sam would also feel the impact of Cas’s choices as heavily as Dean. In a platonic reading, Dean comes across as an asshole, Sam comes across as being weirdly uncaring about his friend of 10 years, and Cas comes across as not even bothering to get Sam’s opinion before leaving. A romantic reading makes sense because quite literally THIS IS A ROMANTIC BREAK UP.
2. The words spoken.
“Well I don’t think there is anything left to say.”
“I think it’s time for me to move on”
From Cas’s perspective at least, name one time in a piece of media where such language has been used for a platonic breakup sincerely? There have been heartfelt break up songs that use these exact words. (I should know I’ve spent the last 24 hours listening to them all).
That last line in particular is so heavy. It’s the last line of the episode and nothing about it is platonic. This is relationship terminology my dudes. “I need to move on, and get over you.” This is Cas’s bloody Adele song. My heart breaks for him, but if I was his sassy and fabulous best girlfriend right now I’d be sitting him down, sipping a cocktail, flipping my hair and telling him “Babe, you’re too good for him. Good Riddance. Let’s go out, have some cocktails, something pink and fruity. No dive bars for us darling. I’ll take you to Heaven... the fun one in London.”
In all seriousness though, from Cas’s perspective, this was him admitting defeat and giving up the fight for love. How anyone can possibly say Cas isn’t in love with Dean after this, well I just don’t know what show you are watching. This is the face of a heartbroken man who has just accepted that his love is unrequited.
Tumblr media
3. The many faces of Dean Winchester
On the other end of the scale, Dean was mostly silent after his poisonous words “And why does that something always seem to be you?”
Tumblr media
Forgive the terrible gif quality I’ve no time for fancy gif work!
Look at his face here. He knows what he said was fucked up and he immediately regrets it. The way he swallows around that regret and then turns away.
and after Cas says that devastating final line and walks away? We get THIS reaction from him:
Tumblr media
The jaw clench as he looks down. The sorrow on his face as he realises he has well and truly fucked this up. LOOK
Tumblr media
Finally, he looks up, makes himself look up and watch Cas leave. If that isn’t the face of a broken man I dunno what to tell you. Anyone who thinks Dean is totally heartless and uncaring right now needs to reassess because this is NOT the face of someone uncaring. This is the face of someone who has just lost everything. Again.
4. The FUCKING MUSIC
Seriously. The sweeping heavy drama of the low strings that come in right after Dean says that horrid line, that carry the weight of the look of horror and heartbreak on Cas’s face as they amplify the emotion there. As they blend seamlessly into the slow and subtle version of the Winchester family theme behind Cas’s heartbreaking speech and Dean’s stubborn stoic face hiding a multitude of emotion, until the violin dominates as Cas says “I think it’s time for me to move on” and the Winchester Theme swells to its climax, ripping all our hearts out just like poor Ketch as Dean watches Cas walk out of his life surrounded by darkness.
I MEAN.
A friend on Twitter reminded us all of this point about the importance of this theme via @justanotheridijiton here which is essentially:
“The Winchester theme is not simply an aural marker to let the audience know when and how Sam and Dean love each other (any Supernatural fan knows that is the baseline of their relationship), but to provide narrative information, especially when the image and dialogue are incomplete or inconsistent with the true situation...  Seasoned fans will recognize the theme and its history of being paired with images indicating deep emotional bonding and a desire to do the right thing by the Winchester code. Here we trust our ears over our eyes to reveal the truth.”
So here is yet another key indicator that any surface read that this is actually an ending between Dean and Cas and that Dean really is just an angry asshole is utter bullshit.
Honestly, this was PAINFUL, but it was painful in the best way. It was 13x01 levels of pain, but this time it was Cas choosing to walk away which makes all the difference. Dean’s greatest fear isn’t his loved ones dying on him after all, but of his loved ones choosing to leave him. This was exactly the kick up the ass Dean needs in order to win Cas back, classic love trope style.
Hence my excitement at what is to come. Yes we won’t see Cas again until 15x06, but in the meantime I fully expect a good helping of angst and wallowing from a depressed Dean who has to deal with the fact that he has just lost the love of his life and it is all his fault. That he just pushed away the one person who promised they would always stay by his side. That has got to hurt.
So yeah, this episode emotionally destroyed me, and I’ve only really covered the primary reason, let alone all my feels over SamWitch, Rowena’s death, Belphegor’s taunting of Cas over his deepest fears and then having to suffer through smiting a creature wearing the face of his son until his body was nothing but a burnt corpse... I wonder if Bobo had a bet going in the office over how much he could hurt us all? He was certainly enjoying scrolling through the Supernatural tag on Twitter and liking everyone’s reaction tweets including some brilliant Destiel related ones. I do love Bobo. Our Angst Goblin King.
If anyone had asked me a few weeks ago what my thoughts were on the chances of getting explicit canon Destiel by series end, I would have said somewhere in the realms of 30-40%, considering it a battle of wills between DabbBerens and CW studio execs who I still feel are against it in general. I would have considered everything that happened after 13x06 as the writers getting a big NO on Destiel from the network and therefore having to pull back on any Destiel related plot points (purely my own speculation on BTS matters of course).
Now I am wondering if Dabb kept fighting the network? If he managed to wear them down into begrudging acceptance? I’m currently up to around an 80% chance of textual canon DeanCas if we continue on this path. If Dean is clearly shown to be mourning and hating himself over Cas next episode, and if this DeanCas dramatic plot line continues to be a focal point of the emotional story arcs... well...
I’m side eyeing 15x07 a lot right now. Only in my wildest dreams would I think that they might actually introduce an old boyfriend for Dean in a “coming out” episode, but the placement, timing, and potential is all there and I’m kind of once again donning the clown mask because I’m just in awe at everything that they are doing. I guess we’ll find out soon enough. In the meantime, I’m gonna paint my face in red and white and wear my rainbow wig and listen to break up songs on Spotify whilst trying to shove my heart back into my chest where Bobo Beren’s gleefully ripped it out with his hands like the demonic angst goblin he is. Wish me luck, I’m not sure I’m gonna get through this season with my emotions intact.

Skyfall - #24WeeksofBond
Tumblr media
We are officially past the halfway mark, and what a way to kick off the second half of 24 Weeks of Bond then with “Skyfall”?  It’s hard to place “Skyfall” when it comes to comparisons between all the other Bond films because it is just so unique.  Looking at the entire film collection up to this point you could place these movies in two different sub-catagories, Action Bond & Comedy Bond.  Skyfall falls under its own sub-catagory - Thriller Bond.  This visually stunning masterpiece has a hair raising plot with eerie characters, brooding cinematography and it is topped off with a dusting of humor.  Not only is it incredible to look at, but the writing and directing make you connect with the characters of Bond more so than any other film.  Plus, it’s the film that ties all the classics in together to give us the cast of characters we had been missing prior.  M, Moneypenny, & Q are now all established and everything is right in the world of 007.
Back in 2006 when Daniel Craig first came on, Barbara Broccolli and Michael G. Wilson, the main producers of the Bond series, had decided to essentially hit the reset button, and bring us back to give us the journey of how Bond came to be Bond, James Bond: License to Kill 007. These first three Daniel Craig films are building blocks for the continuation of the world of James Bond that we all know and love.  But that meant 3 Bond movies that didn’t have cool gadgets delivered to Bond by a snarky head of Q-Branch, didn’t have a sassy, flirtaious Moneypenny at the desk of M, and worst of all, had no gun barrel sequences.  That was probably what made me more frustrated than anything, the first three movies with Daniel Craig, and not one gun barrel sequence to open up the film...it’s just not Bond without it!
But by the time you had left the theatre after seeing Skyfall in IMAX, you felt a sense that everything was back to normal.  They even threw a gun barrel sequence in at the end, which didn’t appease me, but when I went to go see “Spectre” in theatres, I was literally PRAYING that they would put the bun barrel sequence in the beginning.  Once I saw that white circle in the middle of the screen, I literally yelled out loud with excitement.
But that is the end of the film, let’s keep with the theme of the film, and go back in time to the beginning of the film.
This is the story of M, and the coldness and callous thats required to do her job, and it’s also the story of how that affects those that fight for her and their country.  Never before has M been so deeply entrenched in the plot to the point where M is the main character.  Her decision making about her operatives who are in the field is quickly highlighted in the pre-title sequence of the film where everyone is out looking for a stolen data base of all NATO agents who are undercover - putting them all in danger of being exposed.  Bond comes across another field agent Ronson who appears to have been shot.  Bond tries to save him, but M directs Bond to “just leave him”.  Then later, after Bond has caught up to the man we will know as Patrice (after a classic scene where Bond jumps to a disconnected moving train car and shoots his cuffs), Bond and Patrice are struggling on top of the train where M directs Moneypenny to take a shot at Patrice - even though M was told it wasn’t a clean shot and that she might hit Bond.  Well, she does hit Bond and Bond dies...(but not really of course).
You will start to notice a pattern with the Daniel Craig movies...he always finds a way to lose his job.  He is either resigning, getting stripped of his license, getting suspended, or dying.  I hear he retires in “No Time To Die”.  lol.
Tumblr media
This would be the first out of two movies to be directed by Sam Mendes who wasn’t really known for making action movies.  Sam Mendes is a storyteller and a visual artist and he makes that known here.  Everything about the cinematography in this film is just absolutely stunning.  The shots in Shanghai where Bond is swimming and later catches up with Patrice in a high rise office made of glass (one of my favorite fight scenes).  The shots in the Macou casino, the breathtaking views of the hills of Scotland and firelit shots of Skyfall Manor after it had been blown to smithereens.  All these scenes are just a feast for the eyes, and gives the film a sort of suspenseful energy making this film to be classified as a thriller.
On top of that, we have Raoul Silva who is played by the incredible Javier Bardem.  There was a lot of hype surrounding this casting choice as he was pretty fresh off of “No Country for Old Men” fame.  People waiting on pins and needles to watch his performance...unfortunately we don’t get to see him until halfway through the movie.  But when we do see him, we are introduced with one continuous shot of Silva walking towards Bond and delivering a long monologue about rats and coconuts.  As a former actor myself, that is not easy to do.  Bardem gives Silva a nightmarish psychotic coat of paint, but can also make you laugh with just the slightest look accompanied with a bit of sass.
The story is that Raoul Silva had worked as an MI6 agent who was apparently M’s favorite.  But Silva had gotten caught along the way, and was tortured, but never gave M up. He tried to kill himself with cyanid, to make sure he wouldn’t break and protect MI6 - but the cyanid didn’t kill him.  This left his face scarred for life and left him broken and vengeful that M had given him up so easily.  Now Silva has concocted a master plan to get captured, only to escape because of his forward thinking ability to hack someone who is trying to hack him, and get M into a position where he can get a clean shot to kill her.  Pretty straight forward plot, but to say “This time, it’s personal!” may be putting it mildly here.
Inserted into this plot, is a slightly confusing run in with a women named Severine, who is ultimately Bond’s gateway to get to Silva.  The reason I say it is confusing is because I don’t know what her directives are for the scene where she gets a drink with Bond. Severine is being controlled by Silva so her job is to be at the casino for Patrice when he comes and cashes in the chip that he had - but it ends up being Bond cashing in the chip. So, was the plan to have a drink with Patrice and kill him too?  Or were they trying to get Bond to let his guard down so that they could kill him easier?  And why were they going to kill him?  So they didn’t have to pay up?  Was Severine still a sex slave or was she merely Silva’s mistress?  Not much is known about her, but she is clearly afraid of Silva and adds to Silva’s build up nicely.
Tumblr media
Toward the end of the film, after some cat and mouse between Bond and Silva, Bond kidnaps M, uses her as bait (how does it feel, M?), and lures Silva to Skyfall Manor, which is the house Bond grew up in as a kid.  Bond picks Skyfall because he knows of the gun room they had there, but Kincade, who had been the gamekeeper there since Bond was a boy, tells him that they had sold the guns to someone in Idaho.  So now Bond, M, and Kincade have to get creative and “Home Alone” this house with booby traps.  Any kid who grew up watching Home Alone would have been reminded of that movie right away after watching this.  However, we see M getting shot in her side during the scuffle with the baddies and that will lead us to Silva’s killing, and M gasping her last breath in Bond’s arms.  It sure was bittersweet to see Judi Dench leave the role.  In my opinion, she is the best M of them all merely because of all she got to do with it.  Not Bernard Lee’s fault, he just wasn’t given the depth of character that Dench got.
Between Sam Mendes’ commitment to directing the film, Adele gifting us with her incredible voice for the theme song, Javier Bardem playing the villain, and the 4 years it took to get this film into the theatres, this was one of the most anticipated Bond films ever - and it lived up to, or exceeded, everyone’s expectations.  Skyfall is a beautiful and nerve-wracking action thriller that is just on another level as far as Bond films go.  My only gripes with the film is how it slows down towards the end of an already long film, and all the mentions of Bond getting old...why mention his age when we are always going to have Bond movies?
But so many fun moments, like Q asking Bond if he was expecting an exploding pen (Goldeneye shout out), and bringing back the famous Aston Martin car from Goldfinger - that got an audible pop from the audience when I saw it in the Theatres.  Skyfall is definitely Craig’s peak as Bond, but of course he has one more left.  Only time will tell if he ends on a high note with “No Time to Die”, or if “Skyfall” was the high note of Daniel Craig’s Bond tenure.  I’m sure there is more to say about this film, but I can’t think of them right now, so I will say goodnight!
What did you think?  Let me hear you!
Reviews from Friends:
Andrew Albertsen
I read that Judi Dench has more screen time in this movie alone than Desmond Llewelyn has in 17 films as Q. I also read that there was talk of Sean Connery playing Kincade. God that would’ve been stupid.
My Mom
This was a fantastic movie. mark recently talked me into surround sound. I now have to look at little black speakers all over my living room. As I sat enjoying this film on my couch my heart was skipping a beat thinking intruders were sneaking up behind me. Turns out to be Daniel Craig and crew ambushing me with sounds of footsteps and guns. Terrifying.
Jake Benrud
Loved this movie. This is one of my favorites. Always a good Bond flick when there's a turned 00 agent.

In praise of ‘Skyfall’
The opening scenes of “Skyfall” – from Daniel Craig’s James Bond emerging from the shadows to the final notes of Adele’s theme song – last 16 minutes, 45 minutes. And they are the best 16 minutes, 45 seconds in any Bond movie. They are arguably the best opening 16 minutes, 45 seconds in any movie.
When “Skyfall” premiered in 2012, it was an important moment in a long-lasting but inconsistent and aging movie franchise. Craig had made his debut as Bond (or as some derisively called him, James Blonde, for having lighter hair than his predecessors) in 2006’s “Casino Royale,” and it was a stunning intro. The film, considered one of the best entries in franchise history, gave us a Bond that was brutal (as in the opening scene in a men’s room, filmed in wonderfully grainy black and white) but also had a heart (he falls in love with Vesper Lynd). Craig made it clear he was not your father’s (or grandfather’s) 007, and it was a breath of fresh air for a franchise that needed one after a string of mediocre Bond films.
But then, just two years later, came “Quantum of Solace,” a noticeable step backward. Director Marc Foster opted for more of an action movie approach, and the result was a film indistinguishable from many in the genre. Much of Bond’s charm was sidestepped, and no doubt the film’s cohesiveness was hampered by a writers’ strike during its making. Some critics put “Quantum of Solace” near or even at the bottom when ranking the Bond movies.
So, the 007 franchise was at a crossroads in the early 2010s. Another so-so film would be, to detractors, more proof that James Bond had outstayed his welcome, that he was a relic of a time gone by.
A bold, new approach was needed. And a bold, new approach was taken. Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli made some important decisions after “Quantum of Solace,” the most important one being bringing in British director Sam Mendes, whose 1999 film “American Beauty” won the Best Picture Oscar. Many right moves followed, from hiring cinematographer Roger Deakins (“The Shawshank Redemption,” many Coen Brothers movies) to lining up a cast that was unusually stout for a Bond movie (including award-winning actors Judi Dench, Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes and Albert Finney). The makers also set out to make a Bond film that emphasized its British roots and paid homage to the series’ history while also bringing it solidly into the 2010s and making it more relatable to younger viewers.
The result was a special movie, not just by James Bond standards but by any measure of great films. And that was apparent in the first 16 minutes, 45 seconds of “Skyfall.”
“Skyfall” wastes no time getting down to business. It begins with a shadowy figure walking toward the camera. The audience does not realize it is Bond until his face reaches the sunlight and he draws a gun. He discovers a comrade has been shot, and an important computer hard drive has been stolen (technology and our use of it being one of the important themes). Bond wants to help his fellow agent, but “M” (Dench) is more concerned with the hard drive, and this is important in establishing her concern with country above all else.
Then the action begins, and it is breathtaking. Bond chases the bad guy (the one with the hard drive), Patrice (Ola Rapace), through the open-air markets of Istanbul, driven around by Eve Moneypenny (Naomie Harris), though we won’t know she is Moneypenny until the film’s ending. The chase shifts to motorcycles, first along rooftops, then inside the Grand Bazaar shopping mall, then back on streets before Bond purposely crashes his motorcycle into the side of a bridge, somersaults and somehow manages to grab on to a train boxcar below with just one arm. Caught your breath yet?
Bond uses a bulldozer (and gets shot while maneuvering it) to smash into the train and, in a nod to Bond tradition, adjusts his cuffs while entering the open end of a passenger car. He and Patrice fight on top of the train rolling through the Turkish countryside, ducking to get through tunnels, until Moneypenny, who has followed alongside the train in a vehicle, is left with only one choice: shooting at the men and hoping she hits Patrice instead of 007.
Moneypenny complies with M’s orders (“Take the bloody shot!”) and hits Bond, who falls off and takes a long dive into the waters below. When Moneypenny reports to MI6 headquarters “agent down,” M turns to look out a window at a rainy London outside, and the sound of the rain morphs into Bond floating in river rapids, presumably dead like so many Bonds before him.
The lifeless body of 007 goes over a waterfall and plunges into the water just as the first brass notes kick off Adele’s theme song. It marks another brilliant choice by the filmmakers. Adele is British (the previous two Bond theme songs had been performed by Americans Chris Cornell and the duo of Alicia Keys and Jack White) and was at the height of her popularity, and she and fellow songwriter/producer Paul Epworth came up with a song that was, like the movie, both fresh but decidedly Bond.
The song is the stuff of goosebumps, especially as it plays over the titles sequence (another Bond tradition) by Daniel Kleinman. The sequence is visually stunning, the best in the history of the franchise, from a woman’s hand pulling the floating Bond into some unknown, fantastical place to the camera zooming in until it takes us all the way into Bond’s left eye. It’s all there: guns, beautiful women, blood, characters past and current, shadowy figures, hints of what is to come and, of course, Bond. It’s mesmerizing.
The opening 16 minutes, 45 minutes set a lofty bar, and for the most part “Skyfall” clears it. Dench is at her best, and that’s saying something. Bardem’s Silva is an intriguing, creepy and menacing villain. Harris and Ben Whishaw as “Q” breathe new life into important characters audiences expected to see. Craig, as an agent getting on in years but still driven by an uneasy love of country, recaptures the magic from “Casino Royale.” “Skyfall” is beautifully conceived and shot, and it hints at Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight,” another film by a British director that preceded Mendes’ take on Bond by four years and, like “Skyfall,” was deserving (but did not get) a Best Picture nomination.
“Skyfall” is an important bridge between Bond’s past and present. Mendes could not capture lightning in a bottle twice (his follow-up “Spectre” being a solid middle-of-the-pack entry in the series), but he made the best of the Bond movies at a time when the franchise desperately needed it. And he and everyone involved made one incredible 16 minutes, 45 seconds of movie magic.

The Nerd Party’s Top Ten Films of the Decade
To celebrate the end of the decade, the members of The Nerd Party were asked to select their favorite films from 2010-2019. The votes have been counted and verified and here are the results:
Tumblr media
10. Inception (2010) / Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (2018)
It was a tie for tenth place with Christopher Nolan’s decade-defining blockbuster (everyone was using that Inception horn in their trailers) and The Nerd Party’s top Film of 2018: Into The Spider-Verse.
Tumblr media
9. The Social Network (2010)
When it was announced that David Fincher was going to direct a movie about Facebook, the internet scoffed. The end result turned out to be one of the most important and defining films of the decade that has even more punch today.
Tumblr media
8. Before Midnight (2013)
The final entry to an incredible trilogy turned out not to be Rise Of Skywalker but Richard Linklater’s conclusion to the Before Trilogy. But is it really the end? We’ll find out in 2023.
Tumblr media
7. Under the Skin (2014)
The highest-rated A24 film on the list, Scarlett Johansson was a world away from the MCU as she drove around Glasgow in a white transit van picking up men for mysterious and nefarious purposes in this unique science fiction film.
Tumblr media
6. La La Land (2017)
The best original musical of the last ten years (sorry The Greatest Showman), it cemented Damian Chazelle’s position as one of Hollywood’s hottest directors and was responsible for the most infamous moment of the decade when it lost the Best Picture Oscar to Moonlight...
Tumblr media
5. Interstellar (2014)
Christopher Nolan is the only director to have two films on this list with his highest entry being his science-fiction epic that rode the crest of the wave of the McConnaisance.
Tumblr media
4. The Avengers (2012)
Despite dominating the box office charts for the entire decade, the only entry from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to make it onto our list was this original team-up movie that made way for the most successful movie of all time.
Tumblr media
3. Mad Max: Fury Road
Arguably the best pure action film of the last ten years. Well, certainly in the minds of The Nerd Party, as it was the film which featured on the most lists across the group.
Tumblr media
2. Skyfall (2012)
The high point of Daniel Craig’s run as Bond… until No Time to Die at least. It was referential to the franchise but also delivered in terms of action and spectacle. Plus, an absolute banger of a theme song from Adele.
Tumblr media
1. Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Well, who would have thought that a sequel that no one was screaming out for, to a 35-year-old science-fiction film that flopped at the box office would take the top spot on The Nerd Party’s list? BR2049 was simply a stunning piece of filmmaking that built on Ridley Scott’s original world and left us wanting more. And it finally bagged Roger Deakins an overdue Oscar for cinematography!
Make sure to listen to the 200th episode of The Nerd Party’s show Filibuster and hear the hosts Dallas, Kim, and Lee discuss the above list, their own personal lists, as well as review Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

New from Jeff York on The Establishing Shot: MY 10 FAVORITE IMAGES FROM FILMS IN 2019
Every year at this time, I choose my 10 favorite images from films in the year. These are those particular shots that really stuck in my mind, made an impact, or became an indelible memory of the film for me. So, without any further ado, here are those ten that affected me the most. (Oh, and as always, there are spoilers ahead, so you’ve been warned.)
PARASITE The movie PARASITE, by filmmaker Bong Joon Ho, starts out as a comedy of manners. A low-class family cons their way into the home of a rich family to be caretakers of their children and household. It’s a dark comedy about the class system in Korea, but it’s really commenting on anyone’s station in life and how difficult it is to get to the next stage. Before they take over the Park family’s swank home, the Kim family thought they had it bad living in a below-ground-level apartment. Soon enough though, they’ll discover someone living a much lower existence – right there in the secret basement of the Park’s house. The little Park boy has seen him roaming the home at night, thinking it was a ghost. A flashback shows us exactly what he saw and indeed, it’s a terrifying sight. Hands down for me, it was the scariest and most memorable moment in any 2019 film.
MARRIAGE STORY My favorite scene in a movie this year is contained in Noah Baumbach’s MARRIAGE STORY. Charlie (Adam Driver) is a divorcing father, fighting his wife Nicole (Scarlett Johansson) for custody of their young son. He tries his best to impress the social worker (Martha Kelly) evaluating his worthiness one night, but then he accidentally cuts his arm with his pocketknife and tries to be nonchalant about it. As the bleeding continues, the social worker can’t help but notice. The hilarious and heartbreaking scene reaches its zenith when she can’t get the door open to exit. As Charlie watches her struggle, blood escapes down his arm, along with any chance of retaining custody. What a shot.
PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE At the end of the eighteenth century, Marianne (Noemie Merlant) is a painter, tasked with capturing the likeness of a reluctant bride-to-be named Heloise (Adele Haenel). What starts as a tempestuous relationship between artist and subject grows into friendship, then lust, and love. They bond over being outsiders, as well as similar tastes in art and literature. They find particular fascination in the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, leading to a lively discussion of why Orpheus turned around to look at his wife. As their affair ends, and Heloise’s arranged marriage beckons, she invites the exiting Marianne to turn around. Marianne does and sees her lover in her wedding dress, bringing a shocking and definitive end to their relationship, just like that of Orpheus and Eurydice. The way that director Celine Schiamma shoots the moment startles us as much as it does Marianne, finishing off the stunning image with an iris dissolve to black that makes it all positively chilling.
BOOKSMART Early BOOKSMART, Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) drives up to pick up her BFF Molly (Beanie Feldstein) for school. It’s not just a stop though, it’s an opportunity for Molly to make an entrance, and for Amy to join her in an impromptu dance celebrating their friendship. It’s sweet, nerdy, and hilarious as both are eccentrically awkward, lost together in their own little world. Director Olivia Wilde even turns off the soundtrack music halfway through their dance to reveal that the music is all in their heads.
KNIVES OUT Rian Johnson reinterpreted the all-star whodunnit for a modern era with his comedy-mystery KNIVES OUT. He twisted around Agatha Christie’s tropes with relish, yet stayed true to her mainstay of an eccentric detective. Johnson’s investigator Benoit Blanc is a Southern gentleman played to comic perfection by Daniel Craig. Johnson furthered the fun in how he introduced him. Blanc remains a blank for his first minutes of screen time, shot out-of-focus in the background behind the local cop (LaKeith Stanfield). Creating a mystery out of just who is the stranger plinking the piano keys in the background? It killed!
YESTERDAY The movie YESTERDAY isn’t a great film, but it is an intriguing one. After a strange cosmic accident, struggling musician Jack Malik (Himesh Patel) wakes from a coma to realize that in his new existence, no one has heard of the Beatles. Wanting to restore their legacy, as well as make millions singing and claiming their songs as his own, he becomes a worldwide phenomenon. So, if the Fab Four never existed, what became of the fellows who made up the band?  Jack looks up one of them, and the reveal of an older and happy artist living in the country named John Lennon (Robert Carlyle) made for a moment that transcended the one-not idea of the film. Imagine that.
CAPTAIN MARVEL The first superhero movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe featuring a female lead was 2019’s CAPTAIN MARVEL. Brie Larson played pilot Carol Danvers (AKA Captain Marvel) in the 1980’s period piece, and in one scene, flew high into space with fellow pilot Maria (Lashana Lynch) and tagalong tabby Goose. Co-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck come from the world of comedy and it shows in wonderful shots like this one where the cat just floats about, quietly enjoying zero gravity.
FORD V. FERRARI In the action-drama FORD V. FERRARI, Henry Ford II wants an American sports car to beat the Italian-made Ferrari at Le Mans in 1966. Thus, he sets out to do so with an esteemed team of designers and drivers. Ford (Tracy Letts) is a bullying S.O.B. and when designer Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) has had enough of his attitude, he loads him up in the sports car and gives him a 120 MPH test-drive. As Shelby spins him around the dangerous track, Ford is scared shitless, weeping like a baby. It’s a sublime moment with the marvelous Letts letting go as you can see in this hilarious still.
ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD Few films this year received more water cooler discussion than Quentin Tarantino’s ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD. His story of an aging actor (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his best buddy, an aging stunt man (Brad Pitt), reckoning with the new Hollywood of 1969 was both amusing and elegiac. Age is a bitch in any walk of life, but in Tinsel Town, it’s a horror show. Pitt’s old-timer Cliff Booth is lucky to get a job stunting for the TV show THE GREEN HORNET. Still, he can’t help when the young upstart Bruce Lee (Mike Moh) brags about his prowess as a lethal weapon. Booth calls B.S. on the show’s star and they have a friendly fight. Lee scores a knockdown first, but during the second round, Cliff throws his opponent into the side of a car. It’s one of the best sight gags in a film all year, one talked about a lot at that water cooler.
I LOST MY BODY Few animated films are stranger than I LOST MY BODY. It starts with a severed hand escaping the lab where it’s being held to start on a journey of self-discovery. That means back to the body it came from, as well as the history of the owner. Naoufel, the young man who lost the appendage is a lost soul, trying to navigate his way through a difficult life. He’s such a mess, he can’t even deliver pizzas on time. One customer named Gabrielle calls him out on his shit and their conversation over the building’s intercom becomes a makeshift therapy session. As directed by Jeremy Clapin, and voiced by Dev Patel and Alia Shawkat, the simplicity of this static shot becomes mesmerizing in its simplicity and intimacy. It proves that stillness, even in animation, can be more moving than any action.

Tumblr media
We clacked downstairs in our heels, there were still a lot of people at the party. People were mostly crowded in the hallway, clutching glasses of mulled wine. Soft Christmas music was still lowly chiming out of the speakers in the living room. Haz was stood at the bottom of the stairs chatting to Sam and his girlfriend, He was awkwardly running his hands through his hair.  I caught his gaze and he grinned up at me.
“You okay?” He mouthed
“Yeah” I replied moving slowly down the stairs. Nicola went over to Dom and pecked him on the cheek.
“Where’s Tom?” I asked. Haz looked at me weirdly and then proceeded to glance around. I did the same but I couldn’t see him.
“I’m not sure” He said. I looked back at Haz, he looked as if he was hiding something. I ignored it and carried on chatting to him.
“Where’s Bella?” I asked in a hushed tone.
“I asked her to leave” He said smiling awkwardly and tugging at his sleeve.
“Haz! not because of me I hope”
“Well, we had been having a rocky relationship anyways so-“
“You didn’t break up with her did you!” I gasped
No, I said we should have a break-” Haz replied softly. “up”
We both laughed, I felt kind of bad but at the same time I was happy Haz was single again.
As the night came to a close Tom was still nowhere to be seen. Haz and I had migrated to a sofa, the wine had gotten to both our heads so we were sat giggling at everything. I had my legs rested across his lap, my heels were slipped off and strewn on the floor.
“How did you meet her?” I giggled
“Whole foods”
“NO YOU DIDN’T” I shouted rowdily
“Yup, we bonded over kale” He laughed
“You aren’t being serious” I asked pushing my hands into the the leather of the sofa and propping myself up.
“Nope, I wish I was joking” He smirked “I think part of the breakup was just wanting to have a burger after 3 fucking months of being vegetarian”. I laughed so much my stomach ached. Haz was still swigging down some left over wine from a bottle left on the coffee table.
“You two seem drunk as hell” Jacob gushed as he walked into the living room.
“Just happy on life” Haz slurred. He looked over at me with those eyes of his that made my heart flutter. “and maybe a bit drunk”
“You British people seem to really love the holidays” Laura grinned from the doorway.
“Hey where’s Tom?” I bellowed to Laura. She looked so stunning, she was wearing a tight red dress with lace detailing that really flattered her figure and matched her skin tone. She was much more bright and friendly than Z, whenever I tried to talk to Z she seemed very cut off like she was hiding something.
“I’m not sure, I haven’t seen Z either” Jacob interrupted, Jacob was wearing a Christmas Hawaiian shirt covered in Santa's sipping margaritas, he paired it with chinos.
Haz suddenly clenched up. My heart dropped and my gut wrenched I knew something was definitely wrong.
“Jacob can I talk to you?” Haz said quickly standing up and throwing my legs off of him. I jolted forward from the force of his push, Laura came and sat next to me, she obviously noticed my worried look and rested her hand on my back.
“Hey (y/n) I’m sure they’re somewhere” She said in her American drawl. I nodded at her but I knew something was up.
*HAZ’S POV*
I pulled Jacob into a nearby room and shut the door quietly.
“Is there something I should know” I flung my body around to face, Jacob looked intimidated
“No I dont-“ he muttered awkwardly
“Come on J I know you know something” I insisted edging closer to him.
“Well, obviously Z and Tom are clo-”
“I saw them kissing” I interrupted, my jaw clenching. Jacob’s face dropped and then we heard rowdy voices from outside the door; I ignored them.
“How long has this been going on for?” I asked
“I dont think-“
“Jacob seriously” I insisted
“about a year” Jacob said lowly
“a year!” I bellowed. Then the door swung open and revealed Zendaya and Tom laughing away, Tom was carrying a bottle of wine. He looked drunk and so did Z.
“You asshole” I said running towards him and pinning him against the wall. I could smell the alcohol on his breath, his eyes were glassy.
“Harrison what the fuck” I heard Z bellow from next to me. I could feel Jacob trying to pull me off but he wasn’t strong enough.
“What the fuck Haz” Tom said in a drunken slur, he was so drunk he could hardly get the words out.
“You’ve been cheating for a year!” I screamed. Tom awoke from his drunken haze dropping the wine bottle in his clasp letting it smash on the floor, he pulled me out into the corridor. He shoved me against the glass cabinet full of awards, it smashed at the force of his push. I fell through it and lay in the shattered glass as people started crowding around.
*READERS POV*
As Laura and I were having light conversation we heard shouts from the other room. We looked at each other worriedly and stood up. We went into the corridor and saw Tom push Haz into the glass cabinet, the cabinet smashed leaving glass everywhere.
“Haz!” I gushed running towards him.”What’s going on?” I shouted helping Haz up. He brushed the glass off him an luckily seemed to be okay.Everyone fell silent as if there was something I didn't know.
“Is it true Thomas?” Dom said from behind me, he looked shocked. Nicola had tears in her eyes.
“What’s true?” I said whipping my head around a staring at Tom. He had his arm around Zendaya, she looked guilty and so did he.
“You cheated?” Nicola cried “You cheated on (y/n)”. My heart started pounding, it rang in my ears. It felt like I was going to explode. I immediately started crying. It was an angry cry, my tears felt like acid burning my eyes and cheeks. My jaw and fists clenched as I turned to Tom.
“Is this true Tom?” I spat. I could feel everyone looking at me. Tom didn't even know what to say was trying to avoid eye contact. Haz was still lying in the glass and I saw Laura reach out a hand to help him up. He looked at me nervously. I whipped around and looked at everyone, everyone was glaring at me. No one knew what to say but I wanted an answer.

10 Figure Skating programs I love
With the FS off-season--and all related drama revelations--in full bloom, what better time to look back on beloved programs new and old.
Here are ten outstanding pieces (singles disciplines only) from the last couple of seasons that I managed to find online. I feel a bit guilty about not having put in Marin’s Romeo & Juliet. :(
10. Wakaba Higuchi - Skyfall (FS)
youtube
The best FS performance of the 2018 Worlds! I must admit I wasn’t a big Wakaba fan until this season. In my prejudiced view, I considered her too rough around the edges. Then she rolled out this season’s programs and I was sold. What’s more, she owned her FS - a mix of Bond music including Adele’s Skyfall - more than any other of her competitors. From her sleek dress to her cool final spin, Wakaba makes a case for a Bond girl movie starring her. And if her electrifying performance is any indication, it’ll be one to remember. The choreography unleashes all her power while funneling it in purposeful and creative ways, never letting the tension disperse. The crazy fast 3Lz3T may be her main weapon, but it’s the step sequence that steals the show.
9. Patrick Chan - Dear Prudence/Blackbird (SP)
I couldn’t skip over Patrick, our newly retired King of Skating Skills. Dear Prudence/Blackbird by The Beatles signaled his last great season and a return to form. A very good return, despite his jump ailments. If anyone can measure up to 60s pop rock, it’s Patrick with his effortless, flowing, confident skating. His classic elegance and somewhat old-fashion charm seem to recall a bygone idyllic spring. These are songs about inner awakening and struggles; about finding a place you belong. They seem to reflect Parick’s journey to reinvent himself. At the same time, Dear Prudence is about the beauty of nature: "The sun is up, the sky is blue, it's beautiful,” and it’s the pure feeling of connection to the music that stays with you.
8. Javier Fernandez -  Malagueña (SP)
Another great skater on his way out. Coming into Helsinki as the defending World champion, Javier managed to skate this short program cleanly in its two-quad glory. For me this is his finest, most sophisticated SP to date. (I welcome the absence of comical elements.) Certain programs can only be performed to their fullest potential when given another season to grow, and Malagueña is a perfect example. It’s all about getting into character, making every movement count. Obviously, having Javier perform the flamenco - choreographed by a Spanish ballet director - and go the extra mile on every element really adds to the authenticity of the program. His effortless skating is just a rung below Patrick and Yuzuru. This is what an energetic and mesmerizing skate looks like!
7. Mao Asada - Ritual Fire Dance (SP/FS)
youtube
If Mao can’t make you love figure skating nobody can. All my favorite skaters use their bodies as silent musical instruments and Mao is the leader of the pack. Her musicality, arm movements, footwork, versatility, attention to choreography and emotional projection are absolutely unmatched. In what turned out to be her swan song, all her best qualities shine through. Portraying a mysterious black bird, Mao transformed the piano version of Manuel de Falla’s ballet with her charismatic, soft interpretation. Every step and turn, every detail of the performance appears uninhibited yet polished. She has reached a level of fluidity and complexity where jump errors no longer detract from the overall quality. Also, I love the ponytail.
6. Boyang Jin - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (SP)
Boyang is one of my recent favs despite there being room for growth in his skating and other components. Beyond the excitement of watching a young skater evolve, I think he has great potential in every area and will just get better with time. His jumps are already prodigious, his performances iconic. Underlying this program is the idea to present a more complete (and serious) version of B for the Olympic season as well as blend in Chinese elements. Unfortunately I don’t think he got the recognition he deserved. Infused with the right mix of composure and energy, this is an atmospheric character-based program that wonderfully shows his refinements in interpretation and control of edges. That step sequence is *fire*.
5. Carolina Kostner - Ne Me Quitte Pas (SP)
A very sophisticated and adaptable lady. At 31 and having lived through many system changes, Caro brings new meaning to the word “veteran” in singles skating. She first hopped under the spotlight with her stunning jumps, but stayed on the stage until today thanks to her masterful skating prowess and evolving artistic “voice”. Her effortless glide and changes of speed/direction are done on the deepest of edges; her arms move like a painter’s brush. Every movement of hers is flowing, full of love for what she does. And rather than a competitive spirit, it’s the emotions and experience she brings to her performances that keep her in the sport. As Lori Nichol said, this short program allowed Caro to be the athletic and sensual woman that she is.
4. Yuzuru Hanyu - Ballade No.1 in G minor 3.0 :) (SP)
youtube
Yuzuru knows how to start off the Olympic season with a bang: breaking his own WR in his first performance at the Autumn Classic. A horifically difficult piano composition, Chopin’s Ballade No.1, with its dramatic chords, abstract motifs, dynamic rhythm and interwoven themes running from subtle to stormy, seems to fit our agile FS King like an elegant glove. Over the years, Yuzuru gave us not less than three different and perhaps equally iconic interpretations of Chopin’s favorite music. This particular one is all about the aura and intricate details. Every element is blended with the music. The final jump combo comes out of nowhere. This emotional peak then transitions into the StSq which is majestic in its smoothness; it rumbles and flows together with the fiery chords running down the keyboard. All doubts are resolved yet the mystery persists. Nothing can be added or taken away--this is perfection.
3. Satoko Miyahara - Madame Butterfly & The Planets/Princess Leia (FS)
I adore Satoko’s skating, despite her imperfections (read: jumps). The world needs skaters like her, whose elegance, musical flow, precision, and subtle presentation touch your heart. Her body lines and layback spin are gorgeous; her multidirectional skating effortless. (That reverse Walley into the Salchow!) Satoko is a strong character performer. I loved her Goddess/Princess Leia FS from 2016/17, how original the choreography was and how engaged and fast Satoko seemed. It’s such a difficult piece to skate to yet she managed to showcase different sides to her. This year’s M Butterfly was, given the circumstances, a safer skate, but her emotional projection only increased. Her showing at the JNats was the finest in that regard. Butterfly’s anguish and suicide seem to become Satoko’s own struggle with her injuries. But the piece ends with a spin to the dreamlike yearning of Un bel di vedremo, as if we’re witnessing both Butterfly and Satoko’s rebirth.
2. Kaetlyn Osmond - Edith Piaf (SP)
IMO, to her belong the two best ladies’ performances of the 2018 Olympics. With Edith Piaf Kaetlyn has finally found an iconic short program! You can tell when a skater is truly feeling the music and looking happy while on the ice, and this program has accomplished just that for K. We meet a French young lady, sauntering down the streets of Paris, wanting to be noticed by someone special. Accompanying her is the voice of Edith Piaf, who sings Sous Le Ciel de Paris and Milord. The program has it all: purposeful choreography, powerful skating, sensitive interpretation of music, ease of movement, the speed going into her huge jumps. Her outgoing character just floats up so naturally. Thanks to her charm, K could indeed give Cotillard a run for her money.
1. Yuzuru Hanyu - Hope & Legacy (FS)
During the 2017 Worlds, Max Ambesi proclaimed this as Hanyu’s best skate, and also the best skate in history. I couldn’t agree more, even if everyone has their own favs. It was an inconsistent season before Hanyu had surpassed himself to skate clean a program massive in ambition and complex in expression. It was as if he’d become an ethereal nature spirit. He was the air, wind and water contained within the melody. He made himself appear weightless and effortless on the ice, seemingly not needing any strength to execute any of the elements. A dreamlike aura surrounded him. I just love how the program highlights his natural musicality and attention to detail. My favorite part: the serene StSq followed by the 3F as the music rises.
Bonus: Alena Kostornaia - Stella’s Theme (FS)
What a talented Junior we have! In her first international season Alena has shown she has nothing to fear from the Seniors. Her charisma, skating skills, and arm movements are those of a fairy. Her jumps are spiced up with steps/transitions. Her spins sizzle with creativity. Nothing feels rushed or incomplete. I challenge anyone to watch her lyrical, immersive performances and experience “backloading” done right. :)

gold song producer Adi Aberdeen X Grammy Master Randy Merrill master tape production J.Sheon X Liao Wenqiang X Fang Yijia X Night Watcher Qin Xuzhang Mountain Man X Wan Zhixuan X Hai Dafu X He Yusheng Join hands to create a colorful new Ding Dang music color ticket
★ Sing red nearly 50 The drama song "National Love Songs" has a good performance ★ "The palm of your hand" is the first YouTube point to see the billion songs promoted to "K song billion sister" ★ Return to the player's identity to participate in the singing program to return to the original self-viewing self ★ On the eve of the show, the feelings of returning to zero will face the long-distance love and hurt.
Twelve achievements, the results are loud! Dingdang released his first solo album "Runaway from Home" in 2007. After 12 years of debut, he released 8 albums and accumulated more than 50 concerts around the world. He sang nearly 50 TV dramas, movies, stage drama theme songs and episodes. Known as "Idol Drama" and "Queen of the Theme Song", it has the classics of "I love him", "I can't be alone", "Not your fault", "It's hard to be rare", "Can't guess", etc. His masterpiece, the TV drama "Lan Ling Wang" theme song "Hand Palm" has become Ding Dang's first YouTube point to break through the billion songs, so that "K song a sister" Ding Dang promoted "K Ge billion sister" club. The song is also excellent. In 2018, he took the lead in performing a new adaptation of the musical "The Wrong Car" actress "Ami". The tour was held in Taichung, Taipei, Kaohsiung, Xiamen, Wuhan, Beijing, Shanghai, Toronto, Vancouver and other cities. The challenge of the three-in-one strength of song, dance and drama makes Ding Dang's acting career a new milestone!
Constantly innovating, constantly advancing, and constantly returning to zero, is the way in which Ding Dang has been examining himself in recent years. She has set her own 2019 year as "Ding Dang Yuan Nian" and reviewed the past performance art road until this year. It’s like drawing a circle, you can go back to the original point, think back to the original intention, and return to the original one.” Just as she went to the singing program “The Voice of Dreams”, she felt very big in her heart and once stood on the concert of thousands of people selling tickets. On the stage, she has to stand up with the amateurs to become a contestant, and she needs to put a lot of burdens and world vision. This process has become her important life lesson: "The most feared people are getting along with themselves. Re-recognizing that you really need to experience all kinds of storms and baptisms, but often because of various senses of insecurity on the road of life, bring yourself a lot of unnecessary inferiority. And fear." She deeply felt that the bondage of the outside and the so-called care, it does not matter, do not have to deliberately please who to lose yourself.
In love, Ding Dang also bravely faced the return of zero and wounds in the past. She once had a long-distance relationship, always thinking that as long as it is well cared for and maintained, it can make happiness come true. Unexpectedly, on the eve of a performance, the unfettered breakup broke, and the feelings of the five flavors made Ding Dang unable to resist the crash when he was performing! She recalled that she could only tell herself at the time: "I know that the night before the show was the last time we met, so I put all the tastes I have tasted in love into every love song." Long distance love is hard. But Ding Dang is very open and chooses to fall in love, she will go all out. "I don't regret it, at least I work hard, and finally I don't have to be so careful to guard." Walked through the stage and under the stage, after emotion She is grateful for these memorable processes and insights, and believes that she has become a woman with confidence and brilliance after her experience. Now Ding Dang, I know how to cherish my heart, not to live for others, just for myself!

"Love to No Life" is a Ding Dang "the most courageous face to love, the album closest to you", with her true emotional story and love concept as the main axis, from analyzing herself, facing herself, reconciling herself, and healing herself In the music, accept his own imperfections. In the past, Ding Dang often gave people a strong positive image of a "female man". She said frankly: "People who look very strong on the surface often have a weak side in their hearts. Sometimes they just fear to puncture the status quo or dare not face it. The cruel reality is stubborn." The new album "Love to No Life" cuts in with "the regrets and beauty of love life". Love is not perfect, honesty faces ten flaws and ten beauty, everyone has different regrets in love. The concept of the album full of bursting tension, "Love is not to be killed", is the personality portrayal of "Ding Ming San Niang" Ding Dang, born with a kind of "the more you are light, the more you want to prove yourself". Can work for the fall, still do not want to continue to sing on the stage; in order to overcome the demons of the play, set up tens of thousands of words of autobiographical novels for the stage play characters; you can try hard to challenge yourself, extreme sports; Can lose weight, run on the treadmill and cry and don't want to support it; for the sense of justice, for the harassed girl to stand up and defend; more for love, encounter scum male bad heart still love not to die . Every kind of "Don't Die" of Ding Dang is because the loved ones, things, and things are all in the heart. "Because of life, love, and love, you can pay for it, you can love it." .

Have you ever worked hard for others in your life? Do you know if you should, but still do not want to love it? "Don't be fateed" MV is directed by the new director of the MV of Zhang Huimei, "There is a beautiful black movie style. Ding Dang and hair stylist J. Sheon plays a hot couple, but the real identity of the show is J. Sheon. The serial murderer killed a number of women in the darkroom operating room hidden in his hair salon. Dingdang fell in love and fell into the hunting trap to become a lamb to be slaughtered. Even she apparently noticed that she would be stunned and stunned. In this play, I drank a poison drink, and finally woke up to resist the poisonous needle with him but lost the other hand. Ding Dang was so sad that he was crying. MV Riding is a big play, with a face that is closely related to the intimate interaction of J. Sheon's chest and romantic dance. There is a female man who has been dragged and bound to break away from the drama. When she is touched by the murderer J. Sheon, she is afraid of fear but heartbroken. After the drama, even the crying drama is also crying and crying and tearing the heart, so that the "Don't Die" MV full of dark and beautiful violent aesthetic love drama seems more worth seeing.
★ Pants/windbreaker/suit style, neutrality, wind and swaying feeling ★ Black apple/surreal high-rise fashion photographer Zhou Mo palm mirror play avant-garde modern style ★ Mottled and decadent eye makeup / hysterical chaos challenge Life crazy woman dressing up ★ Mobile black paint / temperature ink new designer Yang Shiqing to create a beautiful collection of packaging
echoes the "not to be fat " attitude, the new album style is neutral and handsome, biased suit suit tops, pants, windbreaker Get rid of Ding Dang in the past to give people a feeling of love and soft beauty, showing the feeling of degeneration of strong women. The main visual invites the new fashion photographer Zhou Mo's mirror to play the avant-garde modern style. The ingenious use of black apples represents the fatality of dangerous love, but still eats without fear. Set up a surreal super-high-rise building, let Ding Dang climb the high ladder to the building, showing that even in the high-risk area, it is still dangerous and unrelenting. In the process, Ding Dang also wears workers' gloves and simply puts tall buildings. Tear off the dismantled domineering sense of arrogance. Even in the end, the hair was messed up, with the mottled and sinister makeup, the mad woman who performed the performance, conveyed hysteria and bravely faced defects and imperfections.
The album design packaging is designed by the cutting-edge designer Yang Shiqing. The album cover is made up of a large type of typography. The concept standard words are arranged in a stepped stack, and like a staircase, they echo the idea of climbing the building. In order to present a sense of desperation, the transparent CD case in the album packaging is hand-painted with black paint, so that each album is a unique out-of-print collection, with a black paint flow with jingle photos, showing a dying edge A deep and hopeless experience. In the concept poster, using the temperature-sensitive ink technology, through the touch of the hand, the face of the close-up face will appear, and the interactive temperature will show another kind of jingle appearance. I hope that the fans will use love (temperature) to feel the dying of Ding Dang.

Positive Celebrity Exclusive: Daniel Emmet talks AGT, charity, childhood and more!
Positive Celebrity Exclusive: Daniel Emmet talks AGT, charity and more!
It’s AGT’s Daniel Emmet, he’s cute, he’s talented and he has a huge heart. Daniel Emmet is from Rochester, NY.  And it has always been his passion to sing when he was 15-years-old, he moved to Las Vegas, NV and began taking music lessons, ones that would eventually lead him to his journey on America’s Got Talent.
Initially, PCG magazine didn’t know what to expect from his audition. Afterward, our ears were beyond amazed, in the same way, the audience and judges felt.
Positive Celebrity Exclusive: Daniel Emmet talks AGT, charity and more!
As Emmet pursued toward his goal, it became evident he had the skills to deliver a powerful performance with his unique approach to the musical love language.
Emmet shared how music became a passion, particularly, after moving to Las Vegas.
On singing and moving to Las Vegas.
“
I always enjoyed singing when I was younger, but it never really became a passion for me until I moved to Las Vegas at age 15. While in high school, I had an opportunity to perform (for the very first time outside of a school play) at a Gala for the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation. It was in front of about 800 people, and I was so unprepared for how emotional that moment would be. I learned then and there just how powerful music can be, and how as a performer you have a chance to lift people’s spirits and take them out of their day-to-day life for the time that you’re entertaining them. Once I understood that, I knew I wanted to make music for the rest of my life.”
Positive Celebrity Exclusive: Daniel Radcliffe talks charity, his favorite role and more!
Equally as important, Emmet is a multi-lingual vocalist, in fact, did you guys know that Daniel knows six languages?
Of course, we wanted to know what influenced him to learn such a variety of spoken language.
On Falling in love with different languages of music:
“
I really fell in love with singing in different languages in college. I studied music at Chapman University, and I was very fortunate to have great professors and resources there to learn to sing in the different languages. I would have to say my favorite performance on AGT this far has been “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” because it combined my love of singing in a foreign language, and it was a chance to really do something unexpected for a classical singer. I was able to combine my love of classical music and my love of rock ’n’ roll into one song! Plus there was actual fire on stage, and that’s just way too cool.”
Indeed, he is pure talent, the whole package.
I mean, his wide range of musical expression crosses far across the genre spectrum, including Opera and he learns quickly, in fact, Simon gave him a song to learn and he only had one hour.
PCG magazine wanted to know more about that hour and how it felt have that experience on America’s Got Talent.
On how it felt to experience learning a song in one hour.
Positive Celebrity Exclusive: Daniel Emmet talks AGT, charity and more!
“Well, it was absolutely an adrenaline-junkie worthy hour! I think that because there was a time constraint, I almost didn’t have time to be nervous, I just knew I had to learn it, I had to get it done, and through sheer adrenaline and determination it came together, and while terrifying, it was a moment I’ll never forget.
”
Inspiring, we can’t imagine how intense that moment was for Daniel. But he nailed it and literally blew the judges and audience right off the stage. It was such a powerful performance, especially, taking into account he only had 1-hour to learn the new song.

On how it was to watch himself on TV.
He shared how “surreal,” the whole time he watched himself on TV.
“
It felt so surreal, it was an out-of-body experience for me, and I can say with certainty that all of the emotions from the audition came rushing back as I watched myself on TV for the first time. It was such a crazy moment for me, I couldn’t believe it was really happening!”
Afterward, it was time to be judged, yet, once again he shocked the audience, judges and got through to the next act. Emmet opened up about his audition and hearing what the judges had to say after his performance.

Positive Celebrity Exclusive: AGT’s Shin Lim talks magic, charity and more!
On what he learned, so far during his AGT journey.
“
One significant thing I’ve learned about myself is that you can always find more to give. It doesn’t matter how hard you work on a song or a performance, you can always find a way to make it more impactful, and I love that I get to learn something every day about how to improve in this business.
”
Emmet also shared how he enjoys helping charitable causes, and works with a couple where he lives in Las Vegas.
On charities, he loves and supports.
“Yes, I am proud and humbled to say I have been working with the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation and Sepsis Alliance since I was in high school. Both of these charities have a special place in my heart!”
On the Sepsis Alliance and Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation.
Both, the Sepsis Alliance and Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation have aimed to help those in need have greater odds of surviving with a critical illness. And PCG magazine loves a good cause, it’s great to hear that Daniel Emmet has taken the opportunity to work with both charities.
That’s what makes Daniel shine, he’s not afraid to try, he has a big heart and he’s extremely talented.
It’s no surprise Emmet is able to learn a song in 1-hour and new skills daily. That’s how artists grow that’s why his journey is valuable.
On who he would love to tour with in the future.

Honestly, I could see “Daniel Emmet and Adele,” on tour on a big sponsor sign (haha). These two would make quite the duo on tour, don’t you think?
On his favorite food and restaurants.
Finally, we knew Daniel could sing, we learned about his journey and now was time to learn a little about his personality and asked what his favorite restaurant is to eat a fancy dinner?
“ Yamashiro Hollywood. The food was incredible, and the atmosphere and views are unparalleled.
”
On his favorite films and film characters.
Ladies, this man has taste as well! And when it comes to his favorite movie and film character, he likes classics!
“James Bond, I love all the movies in the franchise, but if I had to choose one, it would be Goldfinger. An absolute classic.

On childhood memories.
Childhood is the one thing that will always be with us as we grow older, and we asked about his favorite childhood memory.
“
Especially now that I live in a desert, something I’ll always cherish are my memories of cutting down Christmas trees with my family when I was younger. It’s simple, but its special, and not everyone lives in a place where you can do that.”
On something unique to his family.
And he even shared a little something unique to his family.
“It may not be unique, but my Grandma makes the world’s best meatballs, and she taught me how to make them, so that’s a recipe that’s really special to me.
