Since it's my birthday my friends got me the amazing gift of 'watching the Wheel of Time show while occasionally stopping to discuss/let me loose my mind' for which I am incredibly grateful. A few random observations from this time through, as I attempted to view it through the lens of the entirely WoT uninitiated (as my friends are)-

The group shots, where the camera passes from one of the Emond's Field 5 to another, do this clever trick where Rand is never actually standing on his own. He's always standing beside or behind someone in one of these shots, so the camera doesn't actually have to cut or pan away from someone else to get to him. This serves the purpose of highlighting him in contrast to his friends, but also to subtlety downplay his presence to the audience, and build up to the Dragon reveal in episode 7 very effectively.

The cinematography in general is so exceedingly rich and delicious- the stark white of the Whitecloak camp contrasted with the bloody reality of their actions. The bright primary colors used to make the Aes Sedai visually pop and feel magical and strange, even as they are dressed (for the most part) practically for their traveling (a complaint I had about the Witcher, aside from everything being brown and grey all the time, is that the mages show up to battles dressed in ballroom dresses instead of you know, clothing that would make sense). The subtle use of lighting and camera angle to create a sense of vast isolation of Shadar Logoth, fear and danger in the Ways, and cramp sweltering heat in the Blight.

Moiraine's opening narration in episode 1 is essentially a summary of the information we get from one of the epigraphs at the ending of the Eye of the World prologue, to whit:

"And the Shadow fell upon the land, and the world was riven, stone from stone. The oceans fled and the mountains where swallowed up. and the nations where scattered to the eight corners of the world. The moon was blood and the sun was as ashes. The seas boiled, and the living envied the dead. All was shattered, and all but memory lost, and one memory above all others, of him who brought the shadow, and the Breaking of the World. And him they named Dragon." - Aleth nin Tearin alta Camora, The Breaking of the World, author unknown, the Fourth Age "The world is broken. Many many years ago men who where born with great power attempted to cage darkness itself. The arrogance. When they failed, the seas boiled, mountains where swallowed up, cities burned, and the women of the Aes Sedai where left to pick up the pieces. These women remembered one thing above all else, the man who brought the Breaking of the World. And him, they. named Dragon." - Moiraine

This makes me suspect their was an earlier version of the script that actually used the epigraph (maybe even both of them). I have mixed on feeling on this, as the epigraphs are one of my favorite artistic choices of Jordan's and really help emphasize the history and depth of his world, but I think filtering it through Moiriane and making it slightly less opaque was a smart choice to convey the information to the audience. I also think this works on a character level as well- here is Moiraine's understanding of this information, shaped by her biases.

Every re-watch also makes me more and more comfortable in my 'the show is a future/past turning of the wheel from the books, the broad events and truths being the same, but seen in one of those endless variations we hear about' interpretation of the series. The heart of the story and characters is the same, and the broad strokes and framework are the same, but it's in the details where things emerge as different. This interpretation has the benefit of fitting really really well with the meta-narrative stuff Jordan always liked to pull, and in freeing I think the show expectations of being a one-to-one recreation.

That said I defiantly felt the cracks in the final two episodes as a result of the Covid shutter and loosing Barney Harris more strongly this time- some of that being that this is my first re watching of season 1 since I've seen season 2. You can practically see the things they wanted/planned to do that had to re-worked because of circumstances beyond their control. Mat's absence in the group argument scene (and the 'I am so tired of you two fighting over her' line that was clearly meant to be Mat's), as well as the lack of bigger/more cohesive battle scene in Tarwin's Gap. You can also tell they hadn't quite figured out how they where going to re-work season 2 yet given that the ending for season 1 had to be changed last minute (for example, their is no reason for Moiraine to just outright admit that she released Lan's bond unless they hadn't yet decided that was where their arc was going yet).

I think the show does an exceedingly good job of structuring it's exposition to the un-intiatited, trying to stagger it so that audience is largely learning new things in pace with the characters. I know people where frustrated that things like the War of Power have yet to come up in earnest even in the Latra and Lews scene, but I think the slow and steady reveal of things matches both the core idea of 'their is always more you don't know', and trying not to overwhelm the audience. My friends had no trouble following what was going and picking up the bigger implications/subtext that underpins a lot of information. 'But why did the Dragon try to cage the Dark One? It doesn't seem like it was that simple.' came up a few times especially.

The detail that what jump-starts Perrin's wolf brother connection is having his wound healed/cleaned by the wolves in that scene from episode 2 is so incredibly clever, and a good twist on the traditional 'werewolf bite' mythology.

I love the deliberate choice to incorporate so many random ruins and remnants of things in the background of shots. Not just the 'dilapidated stone buildings' that the characters camp in, but things like the trio of carved faces that Egwene and Perrin run past while fleeing the Whitecloaks, or the boundary stones Mat and Rand pass on the road, or even just the small carvings and pillars scattered about the cave where they are holding Logain. It all helps to make you feel that ancientness, that brokenness of this world more effectively.

The reoccurring use of the Dragon's Fang to symbolize violence and destruction: the Trollocs using it as a scare tactics, it appearing in the blood in the pool after Nynaeve kills the Trolloc, being burned into Siuan's ruined childhood home....and the way that contrasts with it's use in the finale episode, when we see it whole and unbroken in the seal/yin yang symbol for the first time was really really clever. One of my friends actually gasped out loud and went 'oh' at the first shot of the whole seal when it clicked.

The show does an exceedingly good job of maintaining that core idea of the series that it's about our relationship to violence- violence never being casual or simple or easy, but always raw, hard and bloody and a little bit ugly. EVen subtle things like the way the show depicts Moraine hurling stones at the Trollocs with uncomfortable frankness, trying to literalize what in most fantasy media would be an abstract. Take it from I cast stone 2, to I inflict horrible blunt force trauma on another creature. And of course everything re: Perrin and his ax.

I have more thoughts, but I think I'll save some of them for after we watch season 1, because they relate strongly to stuff from there.

Dead End Paranormal Park shit I need to talk about and I feel bad for my discord server so:

I was expecting a Barney/Logs kiss to be monumental like the first Lumity or Catradora kiss, or at least something like Troyson or Bubbline. But NOOO, I just get SLAPPED IN THE FACE with it right at the beginning of the first episode.

And on the subject, I distinctly remember thinking “I wonder if they’ll have Barney tell Logs he loves them or smth” as I clicked on the second episode. I WAS NOT PREPARED.

Logs is a non-binary gay person. Don’t even fight me on this I’m right.

I was. So. Fucking. Excited. Watching Norma realize her crush on Badyah. It was literally exactly how I realized my crush on my friend and I was so excited to have those two canon.

I was fucking wrong.

Barney talking about transphobia?! Barney talking about people asking about his binder?! THIS SHOW FUCKIN RULES.

Again, I was very wrong about Badyah and Norma.

Badyah rejecting Norma hurt. So fucking much. The rawness of it all just stung so much.

BUT. I HAVE NEVER HEARD ANYONE SAY THE WORDS “I’m straight” IN A KIDS’ CARTOON. It was astronomical. In shows nowadays, queer rep is so far and few between you don’t have any characters to get rejected. So to see Badyah let down Norma as softly as she did, explaining she’s straight then immediately going into a mini sexuality crisis was amazing. Norma’s tears though.

Gonna be honest, was worried about the Josh thing for a minute.

Honestly, I wouldn’t even mind Norma x Zagan. I mean, Zagan’s canonically queer, and I can get behind a good height-difference ship. Also, I love the dynamic of “Morally grey but with a heart of gold x literal demon” Buuuuut Zagan being like 1600 comes with its Twilightes-esque issues.

Not Temeluchus and Pugsely acting like exes that still love each other lmao

Norma regretting everything when her connection to Badyah was lost just hit me in the worst way. The exact same thing happened to me about a year ago - I had a straight crush who was also my best friend, I told her I liked her and we...drifted apart. Everything about Norma's regret from the whole thing is so perfectly written, from her staring at photos of her and Badyah to insisting she's over the crush to being so incredibly excited when she thinks Badyah has come round to her house. I've never been able to relate to a character this much before, and adding on to the fact that Norma has social anxiety and can fixate on one thing until it becomes her entire personality...it just hit me so hard.

Am I still allowed to ship Norma and Badyah? They just meant so much to me before that episode. Is it problematic now? Coz it’s either that or aroace hetero-leaning Badyah.

That whole episode though

The use of the word bi? An entire conversation about how hard it is to come out? The use of the word gay? Norma literally chanting “bi bi bi” like NSWNC?! Screaming, crying.

No, Pauline’s right, Norma’s mum has the best legs.

The coming out scene...shoot me now.

EVEN THE MUM SHIPPED BADYAH AND NORMA-

JULES USING THEY/THEM PRONOUNS. AND SAYING “I use they/them pronouns”. THE GAY IS REAL AND IT IS COMING FOR US.

Okay bear with me, I know how I met your mother ended ages ago but I’ll never get over the ending, it bothers me to no end because I love the show. Recently I had a discussion with a friend about the ending regarding Ted and Robin and we couldn’t agree so now I need to rant here as well.

So here’s my ted talk on Ted Mosby:

Robin and Ted shouldn’t have ended up together, they were zero compatible. Barney and Robin should have, not only for their great storyline but because he gets her. He accepts her for who she truly is. He knows she needs to be independent, she’s her own boss, her own person and he’s okay with it. The show was very specific that one of the many reasons Ted and Robin didn’t work out besides wanting different things in life, was that Ted wanted a princess. There’s a whole episode dedicated to showcasing how Ted wants a woman to need him but Robin doesn’t need him, in fact she doesn’t need anybody. That was the thing that made their relationship fail, Ted hated that she didn’t need him as much as he needed her, she didn’t love him as much as he loved her. Their love was unidirectional. Ted is the kind of guy who just needs to be part of a couple he doesn’t like being alone, we all know someone like that and Robin is not it.

I don’t dislike Ted, I think he is a great super relatable character just not right for Robin. Also he has a bit of a “nice guy complex” and that is one of his flaws as a person. He doesn’t get why he can’t get the committed relationship he wants if he’s a nice guy, with a decent job, who wants to settle down and a have a family. Which on paper is every girls dream, or what people think girls dream about. Despite claiming this, he was never genuinely interested in his partners, most of the times he dated some girl just because he didn’t want to be alone. I’m sorry but that bothers me. You can’t be romantically involved with someone just because you’re desperate to fulfill what you thinks is “the check-list of life” aka “the white picket fence, suburban family dream”, and what is even worse you can’t force someone like Robin that has different goals for her life to do it with you. That’s incredibly selfish.

There’s different guys for everything, there are the guys like Marshall and Ted that are the stereotype of the kind of guys you would take home and introduce to your parents, the one you have a serious relationship with or at least that’s what the show tries to tell us. In the other hand we have guys like Barney, that are the guys you fuck with once in a while because you want it kinky. But the guy spectrum shouldn’t be reduced to just that two extremes.

Now that we are getting to Barney, I know he was far from perfect, he made a lot of mistakes. But the one thing I have to defend him for is that he had very few serious committed relationships but he always gave his 100% in every one of them. Whereas Ted had a lot of serious relationships but he put at least 10% in each one. He was obsessed with finding the perfect girl, the one that accomplished all of his requirements and he had no problem in tossing aside the girls that he didn’t consider to be ideal partners.

He never understood (and the show never made him) the fact that a person perfectly designed for you doesn’t exist. You can find the ideal person for you but it’s never going to be perfect because the truth is that relationships requiere work and compromise and a bit of sacrifice. There will be things that your partner will do that you might dislike and that’s completely normal. The Netflix rom-com Set It Up has an amazing quote that fits this: “We like because and we love in spite of”. That’s it, that’s what relationships are all about and Ted failed to understand this. All of this is a perfectly reasonable explanation of why Ted and Robin shouldn’t have been together. Robin and Barney is my real endgame and I’ll pretend they are happily traveling the world for the rest of my life.

I don’t go on impassioned rants often. But can I just rant about my boy Myuu on Youtube who is responsible for all the amazing piano music that accompanies pretty much every good creepypasta narration ever???

This man is an unsung hero.

Like I’m not even exaggerating when I say he has done almost every song you hear on a creepypasta narration.

Listen, I love horror, I listen to creepypastas on and off all year and I especially listen too it when it gets even remotely close to Halloween (I’m literally starting to get into the Halloween mood in August already cause yes and also you can’t stop me). Creepypasta’s about Disneyland, Let’s Not Meet stories, Creepypasta’s about unethical expriments, monsters, the dark web, eldritch beings, the concept of god being dead and angles eating our flesh, etc. I have listened too them all.

Honestly I think all the characters should have been way more amazed and emotional that Gordon Freeman just suddenly reappeared after 20 years looking exactly the same as he did when he disappeared. Especially from Barney's pespective. Your good (best?) friend, who you may or may not be in love with, suddenly disappeared one day. Because of, ya know, the alien invasion, you assumed he died. You live for 20 years under an oppressive, genocidal regeme. By the time half life 2 begins you're almost 50, but the trauma has aged you far past that. Then one day, out of the blue, you see him. On the security cameras in your office you can just barely make out his face. Your heart is racing. Your head is swimming. It feels like you're moving through jello as you make your way out of your office towards the train he's about to board. A train to certain death or worse. He can't board that train, you can't lose him again, but if you don't appear perfectly calm everything, and I mean everything, will be lost. He's almost in your reach. You're sounding the alarm and opening the door. You finally see his face. Confused, scared, silent. It's all you can do to keep your voice from shaking.

"you. Come with me."

The other CPs don't say anything, he follows you to your office silently. You're almost there, you almost have him again. It's all you can do to keep from running to your office. When you're finally there you almost forget what you're doing. A hasty "I'm gonna need me some privacy" and an off switch on the cameras so you don't blow your cover. Now finally, it's you and it's him. You tear off your mask to greet him.

"it's me Gordon!" But what if he doesn't recognize you after all these years? "Barney, from Black Mesa!"

With your mask off you finally get a good look at his face. You realize. He hasn't changed a bit. In twenty entire years. Where has he been all this time? You're practically an old man now, this guy isn't even 30. Will be still want to be your friend? Will he still want *you*? The fear that things have changed too much grips your heart and this one small moment before he realizes feels like an eternity. Finally it's broken when you see recognition, even joy wash over his face at the sight of his friend. After all this time it looks childlike to you. He doesn't even realize the gravity of what's happened yet. He doesn't know he didn't save the world last time. How are you going to tell him after all he went through at Black Mesa that there's still more to do? The joy of seeing him again mixed with the sorrow of not being able to grow old with him in a peaceful world is almost too much to bear. You choke back tears with your next words-

"About that beer I owed you..."

You don't even have time to explain to him the first eight hours since he disappeared, let alone the last 20 years. You don't have time to throw your arms around him and tell him how worried you were, how you thought he died, and how much you missed him over the last two decades. How much you thought about him every night since the incident. You have to get back to your beating quotas, and he has to get going to Dr. Kleiner's.

are fantastic, and I’ve reread each of them first with passion and then again with a studious eye. For me there is the lonely, yet pragmatic, keen observational protagonist that appeals to me deeply. But also, a woman traveling, forever on the receiving end of looping conversation with strangers. I find her writing extremely romantic. What I’d most like to include on this list, is a piece of her writing from the

New York Times Magazine

: "Making House: Notes on Domesticity." It is a perfect piece of writing about the struggle of making a home and living it in comfortably. “Like the body itself, a home is something both looked at and lived in, a duality that in neither case I have managed to reconcile. I retain the belief that other people’s homes are real where mine is a fabrication, just as I imagine others to live inner lives less flawed than my own.

I couldn’t help but compare our memoir because both books center adolescence and high school at their core. While Ben writes dazzlingly about masculinity and violence and the bubbling rage of teenage boys, I thought about the way we wrote about the paralysis and fear of being a queer girl in that same kind of world. While his boys turn their rage outward, we focused our violence inward, on the most tender parts of ourselves. Ben’s writing opens a door to understanding something about my own experience of those adolescent years. He sheds light on the parents and teachers whose complicated lives indelibly haunt our own, in ways we don’t realize until we become adults. It seems much of our public conversation revolves around what to do about and with men,

The Topeka School is a thrilling response. All of that to say, I think Ben’s book is a smash.

Passages so beautiful that I found myself re-reading them over and over again in amazement. I think it was in the Harpers Magazine review that they called it feminist and sexy. It’s true. An entirely fresh and inspiring heroine. 2. Light Years by James SalterSo many tears; on the tarmac, on the subway, tucked in my bus bunk. I will cherish this book forever. It is 40 years old and that made the discovery so much more powerful. It’s also a good reminder that I am sentimental and a romantic no matter how hard I try to resist those urges. sexuality headcanon: he's bisexual. he's never had a relationship. literally everyone in the world wants him in one way or another.

gender headcanon: i... am not entirely sure on this one too. to be honest i'm very boring and mostly think of him as cis. he's literally just average

a ship i have with this character: barney and/or alyx. they both have very specific relationships with him that are very complex. for barney, gordon who was once someone he knew really well has been twisted into someone larger than life itself. for alyx, she's heard nothing but that her whole life and now has to deal with all her expectations

a brotp i have with this character: also barney and alyx to a certain extent. if you're talking about after white forest, i would Love to see adrian and gordon hang out together

a notp i have with this character: there are a few. mostly leaning into colette, gina, and the gman for different reasons.

a random headcanon: uhhh not only do i think he's hard of hearing, but i like to think that he had major meltdowns in the vents during half-life 1. listening to destruction happening right outside the thin metal you're hiding in takes a huge toll on your health

general opinion of this character: he's FASCINATING in more ways than one. there's a lot that goes unsaid because he just so happens to be a mute protagonist. i hope we get to see more of him someday

tim:

sexuality headcanon: i think he's gay. literally haunted by other men and you think he ISN'T? okayyyy i guess

gender headcanon: he's trans :) he's trans to me and he deserves it

a ship i have with this character: BRIAN, our best friend brian. i know a lot of people think tim/jay is cute, and it is cute, but it doesn't speak to me as much as like... finally accepting and sharing all of yourself with someone else for the very first time

a brotp i have with this character: him and jessica are.... i know they don't interact much but the fact that they care about each other enough to genuinely reach out to one another is. literally one of my favourite things about them. autism to autism connection.

a notp i have with this character: uhhhh mostly just tim/alex to be honest (and the women). there aren't a lot of characters in marble hornets at all so it's hard to be like. notp tim/slender because that's just pretty obvious

a random headcanon: ough,,,, i think he's an avid short story reader on his off hours. what a nerd

general opinion of this character: he is one of the most sympathetic portrayals of a mentally ill character that i... can think of ever. not only that, but he's genuinely compelling and funny and smart outside of that. with a fantastic performance and amazing just. everything! i love him to death

Ok, I wanted to talk about my dreams when I was sleeping. So I was sleeping, and then my parents came in to show me a surprise, so I woke up, ate, dressed, and I was holding my barney talking doll. So when my parents were driving, then they arrived me to a place I have never seen in real life. (Only on Television) A Big, Amazing, Colourful, World of.. THE BARNEY AND FRIENDS STUDIO!!! I was so excited to see it for the first time in real life! I was so hyped, that I get to meet Barney and his friends! We did pictures, play games, and had a lots of fun. And then it was time to go, after I said bye to Barney, I showed him my talking Barney doll. He was so pleased to see i have a toy version of him. So and then, we went home. Until is was my birthday, Barney the Dinosaur came in to my birthday! I was so super dee duper happy! We ate cake and played games, and most of all, I gave Barney a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich! (His favourite) So then, it was time for Barney to go, but after when he was going, he decided to sing me the "I love you you love me" song. It was so calming. 😌 And then Barney went out from my house, saying goodbye, my birthday party was over. And we relaxed and stayed home. That's my first dream. And let's move on to my next dream. The same thing happend to my Barney dream, but it was different. My parents took me to... THE TELETUBBIES STUDIO!! I WAS VERY VERY EXCITED!! So, I got to meet the Teletubbies and we took pictures and stuff. I discovered the place from Teletubbyland, it was like I'm in heaven. 😍 the Teletubbies was behind me, walking with me, and they were holding hands. I felt like I was special. So the Teletubbies showed me their beds, their favourite things, and they even let me play with them! Tinky Winky let me play his handbag, Dipsy let me play with his hat, Laa-Laa let me play with her ball, and Po let me to play her scooter. It was so Tubbytastic! I had so much fun! 😁 I even went to the top of Teletubbyland! And went down from the slide! It was so much fun. But we had to go, so after we were going, I decided to give the Teletubbies a big hug, They were so fluffy and fuzzy! It's like a pillow! So we went to home and we stayed there. That's all I have for today. Hope you guys understand and I will see you next time!

okay okay okay im sorry about this stupid-ass question but: whats going on with all the different mind series? (hold on, finding a better way to phrase it, sorry im garbage at this, uuuh-)

ive been a huge fan of your art for a bit now (a few months, your wonderful geometric mind design makes me want to. eat your art it is so good.) but i have no idea whats going on with the mindverse, i know the freemanverse, i know freemans mind, i know hlvrai, but i never really knew there were. more mind series???? and how they all tie into eachother??? and either 1), where can i learn about all this awesome stuff because KJHKFJGDKJFGD new possible hyperfixation obtained, or 2), can you please explain it to be because i am Very Enthusiastic but Very Lost about all of this-/nf

OH MY GOD. Okay, first thing’s first, I love you, I wish the best for you in this world and you MUST prosper forever /Gen. THANK YOU I AM SO GLAD YOU LIKE MY STUPUD STUFF AAAUGHH… Also! Not a stupid question at all dude this stuff is Convoluted and Stupid! I only know so much because I’m nd and couldn’t put down the wiki pages for more than six seconds !

Okay okay okay. So essentially, the Mindverse is the collective universe/universes of the different Mind series. Some of the more popular ones are Freeman’s Mind, Barney’s Mind, and Shephard’s Mind- all made by different people. There are many, many more of these Mind series though, such as Chell’s Mind, Stark’s Mind, Arlen’s Mind- and literally dozens more.

Some of the Mind Series take place in different games! Obviously with Freeman’s Mind, that takes place in half life. Lots of other people decided to make half life mind series with the various games/mods. There are other minds like Chell’s Mind or Harrison’s Mind that are made in different games with different characters!

Aaaahh trying to keep this brief yet understandable- essentially, after Freeman’s Mind was made, a bunch of other people decided “hey, I wanna do that” and made their own series with different characters and different styles! Here on The Internet- within the fandom specifically- a few people started tying the minds into each other since (and this is where my hyperfixation kicked into overdrive) a group called the Masterminds were all friends and decided to tie their series in with one another! For example, in Barney’s Mind, Barney meets Adrian Shephard from Shephard’s Mind because the two creators wanted to collab! Or how in Felix’s Mind, the creator asked the voice of Barney’s Mind to dub over the canonical Barney in HL2!

I am Sorry this was so Long I Apologize, but I got all my info from watching every Mastermind series and rereading the wikis over and over and over and over and over. If you wanna read more I suggest looking at some wikis! It has character info and (a few) links and it was all around a great way to spend six months of my life. Unfortunately some Mind Stuff needs a little more digging to get to (being this stuff all happened from like, 2009-2016 at the very latest).
