Apologies for ruining your weekend.
Previous / Next
It's not necessary, but if you want to learn more about the events Grace is describing (particularly the spellcaster who sacrificed herself), it originated in another story you can read here (chrono link for desktop only). I'm sure there are some inconsistencies because I had no idea I'd be doing more with it and my storytelling was more casual and gameplay-oriented then, but it might help fill in some gaps.
[rapid knocking at the door]
Caleb: …Morgyn?
Grace: Caleb-
Caleb: Why are you in your nightgown? Are you crying?
Grace: Caleb, I-
Caleb: Where’s Morgyn? Council meetings never go this late.
Grace: [sniffling] Oh, Caleb… The Sages, they’re… they’re…
Caleb: What happened?
Grace: [strangely detached] I’d already gone home. Almost everyone had. There was an… attack. No one saw it coming. Dark magic… ancient spells… malicious… forbidden. How did he even find them?
Caleb: [impatiently] Grace, you’re not making any sense.
Grace: [distantly] The Realm is secured. Someone stopped him before he could tamper with the portals. A teacher, I think, from the children’s school. She sacrificed herself to drain his power.
Caleb: I don’t care about the goddamn Realm! What about Morgyn?
Grace: [sobbing] I’m sorry, Caleb. I’m so sorry. They were ambushed. They had no chance to defend themselves. Faba, Simeon, Morgyn… The entire Council is… dead. Oh my god. Caleb, are you okay?
Caleb: Stay back!
Grace: But-Caleb: I mean it! You’re not safe around me like this. Go home, Grace! Now.

miss the blue noise so much. they were a really cool mechanic and a neat sort of reward for exploring. they also have really cool designs but i wanna shoutout the progfox in particular. it’s more than just how it’s the most unique fight, plus one of the hardest in the game (and a really good example as to why the ds using both screens enhances twewy’s gameplay since it’s perfectly chaotic). i’m a sucker for folklore in general and god is progfox a perfect sort of representation for kitsune. so here’s a lil trivia revolving around this bastard.
Tumblr media
(putting this under a cut since it’s pretty long)
first i’d like to give a bit of cultural background. yeah the progfox is a kitsune, a kind of yokai that’s definitely one of the most well known. foxes in general have been characterized throughout history as being tricksters, but some of the kitsune background are based on a certain divinity.
white foxes are most closely associated with inari okami, a very popular deity even to this day, likely due to representing agriculture and industry. of course he/she/they (gender is different depending on the context) represent a lot more, but rice is definitely incredibly important to japan’s agriculture. humans and foxes in ancient japan have a history which is likely part of their association. the yokai part also likely emerges from a popular folktale of a white kitsune named kuzunoha, one who was saved from a hunter by a man named abe no yasuna, turned into a beautiful woman and cared for him as thanks, and eventually became his lover.
as such, it’s no surprise that kitsune are highly represented in japanese media including video games, and the kuzunoha folktale is also represented in some ways + is part of the influence for the common white fox rep.
the progfox, also unsurprisingly, has the unique ability to transform into various noise, weird forms, and a neku doppelgänger. strangely, while a tail or other fox features is what gives away a kitsune, the neku form only has a slightly different color palette and has him wear a mask.
Tumblr media
there’s also this weird skeleton form which is most likely based on another yokai, gashadokuro—a giant skeleton made of the collective grudges of people who passed on without a proper burial (oddly fitting considering twewy’s story and lore). gashadokuro is also unable to be killed, which is also likely why this form is invincible.
Tumblr media
then of course there’s this infamous form. also deriving from folklore, depending on how many tails a kitsune has, the more powerful it is, with the most they can have often being nine. this is why the progfox (and other fox noise) gets progressively harder the more tails it gets, and also why this form is what launches the super move.
last bit here more so applies to fox noise in general like the multiple tails and transformation stuff (though the progfox is definitely closer to folklore than just the regulars). they all use fire attacks aka kitsunebi aka foxfire. kitsunebi is said to represent the magical power of a kitsune and are a lot like will o wisps. they’re also used for important events held by yokai, particularly weddings, so idk you can see all three fox noise as being in a polyamorous relationship if you want.

Have you ever read the Twelve and Toymaker comic? It gives a few more interesting looks into how the Toymaker thinks that aren’t touched on in the novelisation. Most interestingly (and the main focus of the comic) is that the Toymaker is terrified of the universe outside of the Toyroom — which seems to be defined by its walls, in the novelisation the Toymaker puts particular emphasis on the walls with the candy-striped wallpaper lined with dolls — because it has no walls and because he doesn’t (didn’t? He does in the Giggle) have much control of it.
Tumblr media
(‘‘The Toyroom is growing old, Doctor. So ancient that it no longer functions, as either prison or playground. The barriers between the Toyroom and the wider universe are growing thin, and it is this that has allowed you to wrest control of the toys, as my power wanes. Soon, there will be no Toyroom and I shall be loose in a wild, unforgiving universe, a cosmos with no walls. I can hardly conceive of such infinite horror.’’)
Tumblr media
(‘‘You’ve given a madman access to the entire universe! With that sort of power, think what he’ll do!’’ ‘‘That’s just it, Clara, he doesn’t want the universe. Didn’t you hear him? He’s terrified of it. He can’t bear the thought of losing his control. He needs his safety net.’’)
And that he doesn’t tend to accept help unless he thinks he’s won it.
Tumblr media
(‘‘So you’re just giving him the TARDIS?’’ ‘‘Don’t be ridiculous. I’m building a new Toyroom!’’ ‘‘Inside the TARDIS!’’ ‘‘Precisely! I had to let him think he’d won. He’d never accept my help otherwise.’’)
And THESE PANELS lives in my head
Tumblr media
(‘‘I had to help him, Clara. Can you understand?’’ ‘‘Let me see... a lonely God, drifting through space and time in his magical toy box? Yeah, I think I understand, Doctor, all too well.’’)
The EU tends to give the Toymaker more than his actual TV appearances (mmmm his rambles about being alone in the void and the cold in the novelisation). I need to dissect him and study him in detail so bad
hello love!!! oh my goodness thank you for sending this my way, because i haven't read this comic yet but the sections you've sent me have absolutely broken my heart 💔 what an interesting look into the Toymaker's psyche…it makes perfect sense. when you're a trauma survivor of any kind, especially if you grew up in a traumatic environment, the control you're able to have over that environment (no matter how minimal) is often all that keeps you together…you have to find comfort in that there and whatever small safe space you can carve out for yourself to survive. this has given me a lot to think about, because i wrote the Toymaker with what i think was the canonisation given when he spoke to the Sixth Doctor; that the Toymaker created his Toyroom after a very long time of aimlessly using his powers, when he didn't have a concept of gameplay. there seems to be some contention about whether or not the Toymaker is the creator of the majority of older games in the universe/the concept of games (The Giggle seems to allude to that?), or if he was inspired by other beings who created the games first. i like to think it's a bit of both; that he is the originator of many early games and gameplay rules, but it was the barriers between the voidspace (and his Toyroom) which let in the ideas from other beings 👀 the idea that the Toyroom is the Toymaker's island of safety against a universe which fundamentally doesn't make sense to him is so distressing 😭💖 i think a lot of us who've gone through difficult things can relate to that experience…of having your safe place slowly eroded as circumstances change and you grow older. but it makes sense!!! if he had no one, and the only thing he could cling to were the rules of his games (seemingly the only thing which brings him joy), the inherent chaos of the universe would be terrifying to him. no matter how much he tries to make it so, the universe just isn't a game with rules that can allow him to win: it's random, and brutal. is it any wonder that he has such tantrums when he loses, or when he perceives someone to be cheating? it isn't just that he's upset about losing or bad sportsmanship...it's the literal fabric of his entire worldview being torn apart. oh lord the bit about him not accepting help unless he thinks he's won it…how familiar does that sound to those of us who were traumatised early on? needing to 'earn' things like affection, shelter, food, etc. by working twice as hard, because we feel we don't deserve it inherently...the fact that the Doctor shows the Toymaker such compassion even though the Toymaker is such a dangerous, destructive entity is a real credit to their character. i really appreciate The Giggle replicating that and showing how the Doctor empathises with the Toymaker's terror by offering to play with him...i wish we'd had more time to explore the 'vastness that will never cease'. i don't think that good or bad mean nothing to the Toymaker...i think he's petrified of it. suddenly we understand why he's so boastful about his abilities, like an arrogant child...he's asserting himself against the universe as the only safety he's ever known crumbles. god. my heart hurts - that image of him sitting with the dolls of himself and the Doctor is killing me. i am going to go and read this comic and cry now, thank you so much 😭💖 yes please do!!!! your insight into the Toymaker is fantastic and i'd love to see more character studies of him 😭💖

Adrift Is The Perfect Opening Number
The first I heard of Stray Gods: The Role Playing Musical, was Laura Baily and Ashley Johnson singing a duet in the Myth & Music: An Evening with Stray Gods livestream. The song was Adrift and it struck a chord with me (pun fully intended there), and I'd like to delve into why.
SPOILERS AHEAD
Tumblr media
First up, the chorus.
"Like a boat, lost at sea with no sails, not a breeze I am drifting, cold waters with no star, to be seen"
This is a fantastic metaphor being set up, not just the lack of direction but the lack of ability to move. There is nothing stopping Grace from going anywhere she likes, except herself. She's just drifting.
The way this is sung also compliments this. I don't know much about musical terminology, but dwelling on the end of each few words (boat, sea, sails, breeze, etc.) creates a rocking sensation that shows the power of the waves. She is more influenced by external factors than her ability to do anything about them. She's adrift. The notes help this feeling, but I can't explain how because, again, music terminology ain't my forte.
Tumblr media
This is also the first song in which you get to choose, and how you are introduced to this concept is fascinating. Grace begins feeling adrift, and the audience has no control, just like her. But then Calliope gives you some advice, and you make your first choice.
It is notable that the piece of advice that pushes you into making a decision is "there is no inertia in the ocean". But I want to highlight what you are choosing. In a song about being unsure what to do, you get to choose who you will be, charming, clever, or kickass. It's a neat way of tying the themes, the gameplay and the story together.
Tumblr media
Now, here's a different take on this song. This is the opening of the Illiad:
"RAGE: Sing, Goddess, Achilles' rage"
This is the opening of the Oddysey:
"Sing to me of the man, Muse, the man of twists and turns driven time and again off course, once he had plundered the hallowed heights of Troy."
These are two of the Ancient Greek Epics that were handed down in oral tradition before Homer wrote them down in the form we know them today (more or less). And how do they open? They open by calling upon the muses to sing.
That's how Stray Gods opens as well, although not quite, and that's where the interesting thing lies. Adrift blatantly invokes the Odyssey with its suspiciously nautical metaphors, but it subverts the format. Instead of Grace calling upon the muse to sing, the muse just rocks up out of nowhere and calls Grace to sing. Grace goes on to become the muse, but she hasn't yet, and if you look at this song with that in mind, it's a neat twist of the expectations and I love it.

Menace™
With his pattern, you'd never know anything about him or the purpose of his account.
Posts so many memes, jokes and sarcasm that you'd never know if he's kidding or genuinely a hater.
You'd also never be able to guess his bias. One moment he's posting a simp edit about Hyungwon, another moment he's threatening fans to not bully Mingyu anymore.
Also likes to post ship edits of himself with his members.
"You wish that was you huh?" is a mandatory post with edits of himself getting princess treatment.
Has a tendency of randomly beefing with a teenager
Has a love hate relationship with his followers.
3. Joshua:-
Bold of you to assume he invests time on his phone when he can't even text for his life.
His account is like a random Street that becomes your favourite hangout spot.
The pretty boy you are sure you know that he is and desparately hope for so and pray that he's yours. All without having even seen his face.
Likes to post audio covers of his favourite songs.
And that alone gains him a lot of followers bc his voice resembles a lot to that of Joshua of Seventeen 👀
Fans are convinced a pretty boy owns this account.
He randomly shares DIY hacks and ideas
One day he shares a beaded bracelet that he made and fans get suspicious.
Conveniently lies that he searched about Joshua and picked up that hobby since he liked diy anyway.
Anyway, he has a friendly relationship with his followers but also teases them a lot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Jun:-
The most random and weird fan account of the century
Cats cats and a lot of cats
Cat memes, cat aesthetics, cat language, cat clothes, cat tips JUST CAT
He breathes, speaks, posts, edits in cats only.
Throws in a bit of dirty jokes, food and Minghao.
A simp for his Chinese friends
Sometimes, seriously shares recipes with his followers. Might also share weird food combinations that taste good (read to him)
Honestly speaking, you're never truly prepared for what his next post could be.
Is it going to be a conspiracy theory of cats being an ancient God or a serious Minghao presidency campaign. Who knows?
5. Soonyoung:-
The biggest Shinee enthusiast that there ever is.
Up to date with all shinee news, schedules, choreography, songs, lyrics even their clothes.

Constantly posts about Seventeen too.
Any news about Seventeen, he'd be the first to post about, only second to Seventeen themselves of course😏
Engages with his followers regularly. He's that random internet stranger that's now best friends with a lot of people.
Thirst traps(pictures and comments) of DK and Woozi
Can't edit for life.
Also not very good with SNS.
His internet friends have to guide him through a lot of the features
The only thing that gives him away? His love for tigers of course
Can't help it.
Tiger prints, aesthetic and tigers themselves
At first, his followers were confused if he's being sarcastic or he is a furry
His followers thinks he might be a Hoshi biased. He doesn't deny
Horanghae is his catchphrase. Also a seal that confirms he's a Hoshi biased.
6. Wonwoo:-

Beefs with children, teens and adults alike. Bc he takes his games very seriously
Book recs if you like
Cat-lover™
Dino-simp™
His followers think he also biases Mingyu but who knows?
All in all the book boyfriend vibes which is why he's so popular amongst his followers.
7. Jihoon:-
Anime fan account
Anime Recs
Might even host a watch party
Song recs too
Sometimes drops an instrumental cover of his favourite songs or his original music

He and his followers look like an emo punk cult group.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8. Seokmin:-
Most aesthetic, delulu and the brightest account on the internet
Jokingly calls Joshua his husband, Mingyu his lover, Hoshi his boyfriend, Minghao his Soulmate and Wonwoo his twin flame

The most professional editor and photographer out there
His followers are convinced he's a film major or something when they watch his recent Wonwoo edit that has 1M likes.
Has a decent following bc of his professional edits.
10. Minghao:-
Does he hate his followers?
No one knows
Known as the Anti Delulu Pill of caratland
And makes sure he lives up to the name
Never hesitates to bring fans back to reality when he sees their delusional comments and posts
Even if it means making a teen cry
Only follows Jun and Minghao fan accounts
Posts a lot of thoroughly and professionally edited stuff for Jun
A professional Jun simp if you will
But also blushes and giggles while reading not to innocent stuff about himself
Anti-delulus them while giggling
So why does he even have followers?
Even they don't know bro how will I?

We gotta start accurately calling Sly Cooper a low fantasy universe at some point. It’s retrospectively wild how much supernatural shit is going on in front of your face that you don’t think about because it’s like… nothing to the characters that it’s happening to. People who have never played Sly Cooper have no clue how nonchalantly it grinds this rail between just “real world noire but furries” and straight up DC superpowers stuff.
• The surprising amount of undead, in hindsight
Black magic is just, you know, a thing…. and outside of when it’s the weapon of choice of the villain of the week, it’s not even really brought up. Tsao was building an army of honest to god vampires and Mz.Ruby has been fraternizing with homemade ghouls since she was a child. A second-game side quest involves descetrating a tomb, kidnapping a bunch of restless ghosts, and then unleashing them on the cops for a good prank. For Pete’s sake, Clockwerk, biggest bad of the franchise, is basically an eldritch machine possessed by the vengeful spirit of someone who became too petty and angry to die.
• There are people born with innate superpowers
So, there is no debate going on with the deal about Cooper abilities and this point, right? Sure, the Theivious Raccoonus has a lot of good pointers any thief worth their salt could gain from, but I don’t think it’s a stretch to say somethings along the lines of gliding down lasers or turning invisible on command are a bit out of most readers’ capabilities. The 1st game’s humor in explaining off gameplay mechanics as in-universe phenomena had the unintended consequence of establishing that the Cooper clan members literally have a criminally inclined sort of spidey sense- literally hallucinating glowing auras and blue sparkles around anything both valuable and not nailed down. I think I also awkward appreciated the parallel to be spotted between the Cooper honer code and the self imposed limitations other media supers live by. That idea of “you have the gift of amazing power and you will choose to use it responsibly”, all the better here for the ways in which the clan’s premise subverts classic hero/villain dynamics.
• Ancient techniques of sorcery
run right alongside conventional weaponry
Some supers are born in this world, a lot of them are made. As if anyone with the time to practice and learn can just pick it up like karate. Religion has to be crazy in Sly Cooper considering there’s entire spiritualisms given demonstrable and epic power in what their followers are capable of. Murray literally can do some degree of magic from the third game and onward and there’s no telling what else he learned over the course of his Dreamtime training. Anyone with the wits and resources of the Contessa can figure out how to toy around with freaking mind controlling dark arts. Don’t get me started again on the whole “army of undead” thing which gets even weirder by the implication that the world does nothing to regulate these kind of abilities UP AND UNTIL the user starts to roleplay a cocky little warlord with their zombie friends. And Flame Fu is right there. A lot of what the panda king can do is closer to Bentley’s realm- very complicated and meticulous works of pyrotechnics, but Flame Fu is a whole something else that belongs in this discussion.
• Magical items and mythical beasts
The Mask of Dark Earth, the guru’s special stone, an entire kraken, a whole laundry list of things in The Contessa’s possession, an enormous swamp serpent, haunted trees, whatever the hell kind of ring Dimitri was wearing in the second game, a giant stone dragon statue that turns out to be AN ACTUAL FREAKING DRAGON in dormancy, a supercharged ancient bamboo forest, potentially the Cooper cane itself, and the not-to-be-overlooked every single piece of Clockwerk’s cursed body. I know I’m probably forgetting something because that was just off the cuff. It’s kind of wild that most of what we watch the Coopers focus on stealing can be stuff like museum paintings in a world where magic flying carpets are confirmed to exist. The hell. Why was I ever mocking the pirates in Bloodbath Bay for their paranoia and superstition?? Best part was always that basically none of it phased the resident smarty pants nerd character like it usually would anyone who fills that trope. Because of magic is just an accepted and normalized thing in the world, why WOULD Bentley talk about it any different than he would the history of lumberjacks or combustion physics? Instead of conflicting against his understanding of science, it just tacks onto it as more additional info, you know… the way it would if magic was just another set of rules to study and understand.

I made this drawing as a tribute to Technoblade.
after his passing, I couldn't draw him for almost a year.
as much as I wanted to express my grief through my art, I felt like I would never be able to capture just how wonderful of a person he was and how much he meant to me, so I never tried.
I didn't know him for very long. I found out about his channel in 2021 and his sarcastic sense of humor combined with flawless minecraft gameplay made me love him right away.
the pandemic was a very hard time for me, and watching him provided me with a comfort no other youtube channel ever could.
It's hard to explain why so. I think I just really enjoyed hearing about his stories and I ended up looking up to him a lot as a human being othar than a content creator.
I still watch his videos, searching for that comfort that drew me in from beginning, but now there's a whole new layer of emotion built up over that joy, and for the past year, I struggled to make sense of it.
The grief of losing someone you've never known is complicated. It rarely makes sense in your brain. But the grief is still there.
So when the one year mark was approaching, I decided that I couldn't keep running from it. it was time to try my hand at creating something, if not for my sake, in his memory.
And so this is what this piece is.
it's messy, and doesn't even begin to comprehend everything Techno meant to me and still means to so many of us. But I still wanted to share it with you anyway.
I spent a lot of time picking the flowers as well. I'm not big on symbolism, but I did a bit of research into it, so here's what each of them mean:
The Gladiolus represents honor and remembrance, as well as strength and never giving up.
The Dianthus symbolizes gratitude and admiration, while also being considered the Flower of the Gods by the Ancient Greeks.
The Red Dahlia represents strength and power, but also love. It's bright red can also symbolize blood. BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!
And finally the Daffodil, also known as Narcissus is a symbol of hope for all people affected by Cancer, and it's used by cancer organizations around the world to show support for those suffering and spread awareness.

Since I have Baldur's Gate 3 brainrot with only a reasonable few hundred hours of gameplay under my belt, here's what I think The Lost Boys classes would be for bg3
(I'm doing bg3 and not dnd bc options are more limited (nice for me) and I do value what little sanity I have left.)
David
Class: Rogue Subclass: Arcane Trickster Notes: I feel like this one's obvious, but for those unfamiliar, the rogue class is known for stealth and deception, as well as thievery due to their lockpicking abilities. In general, rogue characters tend to be very conniving and typically hold their cards close to their chests. The Arcane Trickster sublcass adds some ✨magic✨ to the mix with a handful of spells and cantrips. Theoretically, this Could include some illusion spells. Perhaps for tricking someone into thinking their rice has turned into maggots. (Alternatively, Warlock with the sublcass of The Fiend or Wizard with the subclass of Illusion would also be fitting for David.)
Paul
Class: Paladin Sublcass: Oathbreaker Previous Subclass: Oath of Vengeance Notes: HEAR ME OUT. I like the thought of him with religious trauma. Paladins are inherintly religious warriors (very "I'm here to talk to you about MY savior" although you can't pick a specific god in bg3) with three possible oaths in game: Oath of the Ancients, Oath of Devotion, and Oath of Vengeance. Essentially "vow to fight against darkness", "be a knight in shining armor", and "take justice into your own hands" with a handful of tenets unique to each oath. Realistically, the lost boys could easily break ALL of those oaths in a heartbeat, but I ultimately decided on Oath of Vengence on account of one of the tenets: "No Mercy for the Wicked." I believe friendship counts as mercy, and The Lost Boys are FAR from saints. Also, it'd be poetic for him to die carrying out his old oath after Marko dies :)
Marko
Class: Barbarian Sublcass: Wild Magic Multiclass: Druid Subclass: Circle of the Moon Notes: I bet yall weren't expecting a multiclass! Anyway, Barbarians are heavy hitters that rely on instinct and rage to fight. They're one of the more physically strong classes, especially in comparison to spell casters and Rogues (RIP David). When Wild Magic Barbarians use their rage, they set off a random magical effect. Anything from accidentally shrinking your team members to accidentally turning into a very useless cat is on the table, and that sort of chaos felt right for Marko. A Druid is an elemental spellcaster with the ability to turn into animals, referred to as their "Wild Shape". Circle of the Moon Druids are able to turn into a giant badger, a giant spider, a dire wolf, a normal cat, a polar bear, and eventually gain the ability to turn into an owlbear. (It's considered a monstrosity and not an animal, but in more recent dnd media, The Rule of Cool has changed some general rules.)
Dwayne
Class: Ranger Sublcass: Gloom Stalker Notes: Rangers are skilled scouts and trackers with a deep connection to nature. I almost gave this class to either Paul or Marko, HOWEVER the Gloom Stalker subclass made me think of Dwayne. Gloom Stalkers are ambush-happy attackers with an affinity for darkness and can easily hide themselve in the shadows (if desired. Gods know The Lost Boys are NOT quiet and that includes Dwayne). Honestly, it's the closest one can get to being an Assassin without classing as a Rogue. And all I can think about is Dwayne faking his death near the end of the movie (which is something you can 100% do in bg3).

BG3 RAMBLES #1
Starts with Gale epilogue commentary and quickly divulges into how feral of a man he is below the cut
I absolutely love how Gale becomes a teacher like he's implied he's always dreamed of. But let me just go off about what happens if you choose to marry him but not to live in Waterdeep.
He's a smooth talker as always, but his word choice implies he's been having the time of his life, like a social dog set loose in a dog park/doggy daycare kind of time of his life.
I haven't seen all the dialogue options yet, but I love how excited he is to loot books during adventures. Imagine going dungeon crawling, getting a kick from finding ancient tomes to trashy novels. Actually, me too my dude. He mentions that he has collected enough literature to fill a dozen libraries? Hello?! The Tav 100% got him a Bag of Holding at some point, maybe even as a wedding gift.
I know every playthrough with Gale is different, but everything I've gathered about him amplified by my own gameplay just makes him the ultimate orange cat of a man. I swear this man gets zoomies, but its never obvious until you're standing there, eyes wide open and jaw dropped, because he did something completely feral that you did not forsee.
When he said, "I always wondered what it would feel like to be nervous", I initially thought, "Oh, Gale, beanie baby man. You have been nervous though??? Everyone has at some point?". But then I think about all the things he has said and done and just wonder... "Okay, maybe he was completely dead serious about that".
Like for example, immediately after he says he's nervous and asks for advice on what to say to Mystra, of course Marcio tells him to not give away anything. We need more information right? That and Marcio wants to cuss her out, but he knows that might get Gale in trouble, but he also doesn't want Gale to apologize to Mystra, and he doesn't want Gale to become a god, so yah know.
Not two seconds in after being terrified of this lady, he finds out about the crown's abilities and says the equivalent of, "ha ha, you're afraid of me >:)" to the goddess who is like 5 inches away from his face. EXCUSE ME? SIR? WHAT ARE YOU DOING? WHAT ARE YOU THINKING? GALE?!?! GALE!!!
Or how about when Raphael wants to make that deal, giving Raphael the crown and all that. Me thinking, "Oh, I wonder what Gale is thinking. Giving the crown to Raphael would sentence Gale to death, so—" and then Gale immediately going into attack dog mode yelling over Marcio's shoulder that Raphael is a bitch who shouldn't be given anything.
Oh! And don't forget! Lorroakan insulting Gale as being Mystra's lapdog, only for Gale to smile and calmly brag he's about to kick Mystra's ass and maybe take her domain. Gale. Sweet, sweet Gale. What the fuck are you doing?
Thank you, Gale. I never need to wonder what your opinion is.
His AI also feral (for me at least):
He's constantly climbing on top of things.
He's the only one who has managed to fall off of something and take fall damage. No idea how though. He was off screen. I just heard a scream and then saw he took 4 damage.
When he's blinded, he immediately takes out his staff like he's about to hit someone with it. No, not to feel around so he can move safely. He holds it like a baseball bat and aggressively wobbles it around ready to strike. SIR! PLEASE!
He can't spot a trap to save his life and always walks into the bombs.
Can't pass any of his history checks with a 17 in intelligence, but his boyfriend with a 9 can.
I'm sure there is more, but I only got 3 hours of sleep and wrote this after an paper for ethics. I'm losing my mind.

BioWare describe the new cinematic as an "in-game cinematic" ("not actual gameplay"), a "work in progress cinematic" and a "key cinematic". In the blog post they say "we wanted to close out this year with [showing the new cinematic]" - I wonder if this is communicating that Dragon Age: Dreadwolf will not be present at The Game Awards 2022?
The blog post repeats the 2020 teaser trailer tagline, "The Dread Wolf Rises", and the motif of waiting for Solas to make his move recalls an earlier blog post where they said "Rest assured, Solas is placing his pieces on the board as we speak." This language always reminds of Solas' chess match with The Iron Bull. And of rooks (the chess piece) & therefore of his Tower tarot card, and of the Red Book with wolf & tower in its emblem.
Stylistically and with Varric's voiceover, the new cinematic is reminiscent of the Varric-narrated cinematics in the Dragon Age Keep and in DAII when he tells Cassandra the story of the Fifth Blight in relation to the Champion in the opening, and the cinematics he narrates in DAII that bridge the Acts. Could this be the introduction cinematic to DA:D? Returning players know who Solas is, but new players need that grounding.
"Elven god of lies or heroic rebel against tyranny? Depends on who you ask" is reminiscent of Codex entry: The Rebel God.
The Dalish use "Harellan" to mean "traitor to one's kin," but the word does not appear in any elven text before the Towers Age. The ancient root-word is related to "harillen," or opposition, and "hellathen," or noble struggle. The Dalish call Fen'Harel a god of deception, but I posit a far more accurate translation would be "god of rebellion."
What he rebelled against is a story lost to time. In Dalish legends, Fen'Harel seals away the other deities out of love of trickery. If we understood more ancient elven, we might find earlier versions of the Dread Wolf's story give him a more nuanced motivation beyond spite.
—From A Treaty on the Pagan and Heretical Customs of the Elven, by Senallen Tavernier of the University of Orlais, commissioned by Empress Celene.
God of deception, or god of rebellion? God of lies or heroic rebel? Which version of the story is the truth? The truth is probably somewhere in-between.
The title of the video on YouTube, "Who is The Dread Wolf?" reminds of Rasaan in Genitivi Dies in the End, in search of his "true name".
Regarding the cinematic itself:
Tumblr media
The first painting recalls Solas both as Hermit and Hierophant. He's in the same position as he is in the Hermit, carrying the same staff and enhaloed by concentric circles, sun-like. Meanwhile the rolling hills on which he stands, golden leaves and lighting are more like the Hierophant. Then the screen darkens and the sun becomes a (full) moon. Interesting to see that here the Dread Wolf's eyes are Red like the Tower card again, not blue as here.
Tumblr media
The howl at this point reminded me of the howling wolves in the background when the Inquisitor is lost in the snow, and the overcoat and pin here are similar to this outfit.
Tumblr media
The golden geometric patterns remind of the 2020 trailer where the "Dragon Age" logo was gold in color, over a black background and sun-like background. It also reminds me of sacred geometry (which "is associated with the belief that a god is the creator of the universal geometer"; "the belief that a god created the universe according to a geometric plan"). Anyways, here is where it gets really interesting. We are no strangers to the concentric circles motifs and these patterns: the Golden/Black City in the center of the Fade, surrounded by a hemisphere barrier which represents the Veil. The Golden City turns Black right as Varric says "Solas imprisoned them". Is Solas doing this what caused the Golden City to turn Black, corrupted and Blighted? Recall Duncan in the opening of DA:O:
"The Chantry teaches us that is the hubris of men that brought darkspawn into our world. The mages had sought to usurp Heaven, but instead, they destroyed it. They were cast out, twisted and cursed by their own corruption. They returned as monsters, the first of the darkspawn. They became a Blight upon the lands."
Hubris is defined as excessive pride, and when that cinematic shows the Magisters returning to the world Tainted, there's a peacock feather shown (a symbol of pride). pride, or Pride himself? If the Golden City turned Black when Solas imprisoned the Evanuris, then this seems to imply a connection between Solas locking the Evanuris away (or more specifically, between Solas creating the Veil in order to do so) and the origin of the Blight. Creating the Veil, an unnatural construct, is connected to the Blight beginning. A fan theory which existed prior to this cinematic to be sure, but still cool to see here.
And so is the Golden City blackened With each step you take in my Hall. Marvel at perfection, for it is fleeting. You have brought Sin to Heaven And doom upon all the world.
-Threnodies 8:13
According to Corypheus, the Golden City was already Black when they reached it, and the throne was empty. Was it the hubris of human men, or the hubris of one man, Solas, that brought doom upon all the world in the form of the Blights? The world he woke up to in DAI was a nightmare world, to him.
Also of note are the seven symbols arranged around the outside of the ring. It's been speculated based on previous versions of the 'hemisphere with some spheres lit and some not lit' image that the lit/unlit hemispheres represent the Old Gods, two still sleeping. And while they may still be connected (Old Gods-Evanuris), we have seen these symbols before, in Trespasser atop elven mirrors and statues, and in mosaics. They're elven, and so the symbols, and therefore the lit/unlit hemispheres, actually represent the Evanuris, minus Mythal ('dead' at the time) and Solas himself. Two specifically are immediately recognizable:
Tumblr media
which... 😬 oooh we in danger
As for here
Tumblr media
it's hard to tell, but maybe he's holding the red lyrium idol here? And does this show the past, Solas creating the Veil atop the mountains in the Frostbacks where Skyhold now stands ("the place where the sky is held up/back"), or is this future him destroying and taking it back down? Maybe both.
Q: Why does Varric say "he wanted", not "he wants"? And what's the golden disc in the center of the circle? It's more central than the Golden/Black City. Is the City perhaps not the center of the Fade after all?

Baal - Day 5
Race: Deity
Alignment: Light-Law
March 25th, 2024
Tumblr media
Today's demon of the day belies himself as a god in the bible, though is truly a forgotten deity in his own right- Baal, Canaanite god of rain and fertility.
Baal, known by his true name of Hadad only to the priests and leadership of the religion, was a leading deity of the ancient Canaanite and Mesopotamian pantheons, given the title of 'Prince of the Earth,' a god commonly worshipped to bring about rains to the arid lands of Mesopotamia. Derived from the god Ishkur from Sumerian myth, Baal's role differed greatly from most storm gods, instead being a savior of sorts, a man who brought rain to dry lands and painted them in fertile grass instead of breaking things apart with storms and thunder.
In his main myth, Baal came into conflict with the god of Death and Sterility in Canaanite myth, Mot, and was locked in eternal conflict for years- each time he would fall, crops would wither away, and each time Mot would fall, they would spring to life. This eternal cycle known as the Baal cycle would become a focal point for Mesopotamian mythology, and Baal was a beloved deity...
Until Christianity attacked.
Unfortunately for Baal, his time in the limelight would soon give way to biblical stories about the Canaanite cults, and as the story would go, Baal was unable to complete the tasks set before him that the Israelite YHWH was able to complete. The prophet Elijah's altar was torn, a mastery over the weather was shown by YHWH, and this oddly spiteful tale that seems to come down to 'oh, my god is cooler than yours' comes to a bloody end as the cultists of Baal are soon brought to a bloody end by the blades of the priesthood.
Due to this, several demons were given epithets derived from Baal, such as Bael or Beelzebub, and Baal fell into a hole of obscurity, as would myths of Canaanite origin in general. In my opinion, a frankly somewhat tragic tale coming down to spite, but aside from that...
Baal's story makes him a perfect fit for a demon, one who rebels against god, mayhaps as a story of revenge for the death of his followers. In gameplay, he's a very powerful magic-focused demon with a specialty in, you guessed it... wind skills. The connection is obvious- he's a god of weather, after all. His design is very, very unique, as there isn't much to go off of for Baal's design in the mythos on account of only a few damaged art pieces surviving.
Tumblr media
Baal's headdress remains, though changes to a more webbed design, his outfit resembling a traditional one of a middle-eastern culture, at least stereotypically speaking. He also appears as a... twink. I think? I dunno what he'd really count as. One of my friends referred to him as an otter? Regardless of all this, though, what's most notable with him are the fins adorning so many pieces of his armor, something which I... actually am not sure of the significance of. If anyone is more knowledgeable about this subject, please tell me in the notes! The same goes for the rest of this rundown, as I'm honestly not very familiar with Biblical stories or Canaanite mythology.

guys i am literally obsessed with tears of the kingdom and its not even out yet. from the ten minute gameplay that ive already watched four times today, it looks like this game is going to be everything ive ever dreamed of.
• intensely connected to nature.
• filled with archaic knowledge and ancient civilizations.
• a quest about finding guidance for the future, by looking in hyrule's past.
storyline aside, the aesthetics of the game itself are absolutely UNREAL. the quiet music that plays in the shrine-filled sky islands. the yellow trees, rivers, the "constructs", automated creatures that seem made of stone. magically modern. a kind of technology that blends with the environment around it. its so BEAUTIFUL and PERFECT. god i wish i could live in botw and totk hyrule. the gentle post apocalypse where nature takes over. where modern mechanics blend seamlessly into their surroundings. where there are ancient, sacred things surrounding us at all times, but they are begging to be explored and studied. not the kind of "look-but-dont-touch" sacred.
the sky islands seem so peaceful and solitary. they FEEL like places that have been abandoned and forgotten, for a very very long time. seeing link walk through them and explore them takes me back to the first time i ever played botw. the feeling that this whole world, all of this openness, the environment, its all here for me, the player, to explore and examine. and by god if nintendo hasnt intensified that feeling a hundredfold with these new spaces. it feels so intensely special, i just cant describe it in another way than sacred.
if these sky islands were built by the zonai, link, the hero of the wilds, will be the first person to walk on them, visit them, and explore them in more than ten thousand years. which also means we can imagine them in their heyday. were they filled with people? zonai, perhaps? worshippers going to the shrines? warriors practicing their skill with the stone gollums? what was the purpose of these islands? why were they built? i am so unbelievably excited to see what we find here.

Oh hi!
I'm Phyn! I write things. I'm not going to get into a bunch of identity stuff, but I'm queer, I'm an adult, and I like writing queer adult stuff. Mostly horror (see: queer) and absurdity (see: the world)
I have degrees in english, theology, and more theology, which just means I have a bunch of experience doing critical thinking and analysis of storytelling, and enough imposter syndrome that I don't know how to put that on a resume.
FANDOMS!
If you're already following me it's probably for Pillars of Eternity, TMA, or LOTR/Silmarillion. I cycle through hyperfixations every few years. It's still TMA/TMAGP right now. You can find my TMAGP sideblog here, where I just collect art.
Other things I like: Fallen London, everything by Pia Foxhall/not_poignant, re:dracula, SILT VERSES, Rivers of London, Murderbot, Critical Role, Saga, Wicked+Divine, anything by Neil Gaiman, I Am in Eskew, norse myths, egyptian myths, jewish myths, the dragonlance books (don't judge me they were foundational), pretty much everything Mike Flanagan makes, and much much more
WRITING!
I'm on ao3 as Phynoma! What do I write? Well. I write in-depth explorations of characters placed in harrowing situations which draw out the very inmost parts of their vulnerabilities and--
Smut. I write smut, okay?
Almost all of these fics are explicit and PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD mind the tags, I am *very* careful with my tagging for good reason!!!!
HERE YA GO, YA FILTHY ANIMALS!
The Magnus Archives:
I mentioned this is my current fixation, right?
an extant form of life: pollen fic! You could say, maybe, that the Consuming AU uses pollen tropes, but I'm counting this as my first-ever pollen fic. Jon/Tim, Jon/Martin, maybe Jon/Tim/Martin, we'll see if Sasha gets thrown in there. Ongoing.
Hey, Jude: A hurt/comfort fic about what happened after Jon shook Jude Perry's hand. Jon & Georgie & the kindness of strangers (not those strangers) Oneshot.
The Consuming AU: My pride and joy. My baby. I started this halfway through listening to TMA the first time and finished the original fic in about two months in time for the Rusty Quill Big Bang of 2023. Canon is basically the same, with the addition of "what if there was a Entity of Hunger, (fear of) Intimacy, and Codependence?" Also Jon is turning into a succubus. Main fic is complete at a little over 100k words. Sometimes I add one-shots to the series.
~Incredible bookbinding done by @bluejayblueskies HERE ~Art of human-looking Rhia (by me) HERE and commission of eldritch angel Rhia by @isbergillustration HERE ~Commission of Naadia by @dcartcorner HERE
Kittens & Kink AU: Fluffy Somewhere Else one-shots. Cat play. Mostly nonsexual kink. Oliver/Jon/Martin. Ongoing, until I get bored of it, basically.
Pillars of Eternity:
The In-Between Series: A series of fics following the relationship of Watcher Mirad and Aloth Corfiser, ten years or so after the events of Deadfire. The world of Eora is ripe for a new cataclysm, and these two elves are trying to finally have the relationship they've been dancing around for two decades. Ongoing, on hiatus as my hyperfixation is elsewhere. I do plan to finish it, though.
Moments: same universe and characters as above, focusing more on events that happen in canon-- ie, during gameplay. Complete.
Faetales:
Mat & Kal: Fae AU: You know how sometimes you keep writing characters and put them through a blender so many times that they just become something completely new? That's this AU. Mateo and Makalo are two ancient fae beings trapped in the human world during the events of The Ice Plague (by not_poignant) who become bound by each others' lives and deaths. They hate each other, they love each other, they're in weird psychosexual sadistic codependency with each other. They're a cat-person and a snake-person. I'm not a furry but I like some of their ideas, okay? Series complete.
See commissioned art of Mat & Kal by @shojoshark HERE
The Silmarillion:
Mistakes Were Made: Imma be real, this is just straight up torture porn. Sauron is punished by Morgoth after the loss of the Silmaril to Beren & Luthien. Basically, I was annoyed by all the fluffy Angbang fics I was reading and wanted to depict them in all their horrifying, codependent glory. Complete.
Cost of Surrender: I read a really good fic about what it took for Mairon to grovel/debase himself to Eonwe to gain his freedom and I took it a bit further. Complete.
Good Omens:
the beautiful and the fitting: pretty sure the title of this is a quote from St. Augustine, too. I almost didn't include this one because I don't even remember what it's about. Fluffy sex times with nonsexual beings, I think. I started writing it because Good Omens is one of my favorite books, but tbh the fandom for the show exhausts me and I don't know if I'll come back to this. Abandoned, probably.

Nah man 16 is absolutely nothing like it's marketing. It drops the pseudo-Game of Thrones stuff like an hour in, it's FF to its core. Power of friendship and fighting ancient gods and religious conspiracies, all that good stuff.
Not digging the gameplay I get but the marketing of like "this ain't your mommy's final fantasy" was just completely false advertising. No idea what was up with that.
I'll take your word for it, Reignsan! Still a bit sad they removed Chocobo's theme :(
