SO many angsty scenarios for him I love this man and I love hurting him

I don't know if I ever posted here but I had an idea where Lucrecia had a son either with Gelsin or after his death. She gave the baby to her sister while she went to go do work in America.

But then she had fun there, and she met a very nice man, and Gus was growing up so well with Marona and Lazarus. And maybe she didn't want to mention the messiness of her family to Ford when they were having such a good time in their own little world, until she was sure about him.

But she does come back to fight for her country, and in the aftermath of the war political differences divide the sisters. Marona wont' let Lucrecia even see Augustus, and even if they fight about it Lucy knows the palace is not safe for him. It's not safe for anyone to even know she has a child.

And then the deluge happens, and Marona and Lazarus are dead, and everyone forgot that Augustus had ever been anyone but Marona's child.

I just think it was hard enough to lose his mother once- this kind of revelation, if it ever came to light, would break Gus from the emotional whiplash. I'm not your mother- oh wait yes I am!

Completely upset his understanding of family and his identity crisis becomes crippling. Who is he?

Another idea is Gus struggling to feel like he can become a "true psychic" from his cut voice lines.

I'm sure he has great power, but he's insecure about his age. Isn't he starting too late? Hasn't he repressed for too long?

He has to put on a brave face for his family, especially Razputin and Frazie. After he made them feel like they had to hide themselves, how could he burden them by letting them see him struggle?

He doesn't feel like he has the right to feel what he's feeling, and definitely not to express it. But every time his powers stutter, his levitation ball deflates or his flames flicker out, he wonders if something inside of him is irreversibly broken.

Then we could always just whump him! He's a powerful psychic after all. If his powers ever got out of hand then he would never forgive himself. The Aquatos have many enemies, and we don't know who they all are. The family is fractured and vulnerable right now. If someone wanted to take advantage, it would be all too easy.

If they attacked his family, he would protect them, and it would be difficult to handle the aftermath. He was always afraid of his powers and the hurt they could cause. Even if it was for a good reason, he'd be devestated.

Or he could be kidnapped, separated from the family, his emotional support and his rock. Used as a hostage or bait or any number of awful things, he just wants so desperately to be home and safe.

If I'm doing hurt I want to offer comfort! Gus is a family man! He adores his wife and children. I think in any scenario he can be okay if he explains what he's feeling. Dona can help him with that!

She's the one who can get past his need to be strong. He can lean on her and with a little coaxing it all comes out. She holds him and kisses his face and reassures him their family is strong and they love each other, and they love him, so much. Even if he doesn't know who he is, she knows him like the back of her hand. They'll figure it out together.

And if he was kidnapped, may god have mercy on the souls of those who tried to hurt him. This man leaves a good impression on anyone he meets, the only thing he has more than enemies is friends and loved ones. After being rescued, he can return to the caravan, filled with warm familiar smells and sounds, as his whole family piles in to one big cuddle pile. They're safe, they're all going to be okay now that papa's home.

A complexion study! I thought it’d be interesting to contemplate what the Aquatos would look like with a few varieties of realistic Romani skin colors and how the two might mingle to retain that goofy red/yellow/green and yellow/blue/brown color harmony from the games.

I’m absolutely not the first person to do this, but I can’t find the post that inspired me. It was Frazie and Mirtala with brown skin in pretty blue leotards, I think. If anyone can find it, plz link me.

(I also felt the need to sit and tweak Raz’s face a bit so he looks less like a Danny Phantom clone than in previous drawings.)

I guess we all should think a little

I’ve seen some fics in which the Aquatos are presented as very toxic individuals. Fics in which their traveling culture is presented as a problem, a far from ideal lifestyle - and both approaches couldn’t be any more wrong. After all, criticize a situation and blame its victims and their culture are completely different things.

You can - and you should - acknowledge that some of the Aquatos had toxic attitudes. But having toxic attitudes doesn’t make someone a necessarily toxic person. Even though some of them had shown shitty, but reasonable, attitudes through the game, they clearly love each other.

Raz ran away from home, straight to the people they despised the most and only a ccouple of days passed. Of course they were angry! Would you be happy if a sibling or child of yours ran away from you to interact with someone you considered being dangerous? Because I wouldn’t.

You can headcannon whatever awful things happening to the Aquatos, whatever implications of a socially vulnerable situation. After all, they’re war immigrants, poor and Romani. And both poverty and prejudice can force people to stay in vulnerability, target to terrible happenings.

However, it isn’t - such scenarios will never be the fault of a culture, even less the fault of the people who are going through them. The responsibility is in the lack of opportunities, in the prejudice and mainly in our judgemental society.

You can say that Frazie raised her younger siblings, that Raz is not well literate - whatever difficulties you headcannon - there’s nothing inherently wrong with that, quite the opposite: such settings can make characters even more deep than they already are! But I reinforce that none of this things will ever be the fault of their travelling / circus culture. Saying so is messed up the same way it is to directly blame them for bullshit they suffer with.

A bit of researching is already enough to expand our horizons and demystify some prejudices I’ve seen people reproducing in the fandom. It demystified a lot of my own prejudices. There's no problem in aknowledging our biases, or in overcoming them. That's what make we grow as human beings.

After all, Psychonauts 2 is a game about empathy and forgiveness. Practicing in our writing such valuable teachings, like lots of famous authors and books such as Oliver Twist, My Sweet Orange Tree and Captains of the Sands did before, is extremely necessary.

Aquato headcanon time

All the aquato children have had running away phases(not what like Raz did but like just going to a different nearby area)

Dion stopped around the time Raz was born because he had to be “the older brother who had to set the example”. Frazie semi-stopped around the same time too, but would run off for short periods of time to practice her abilities. Raz traded the running away habit with a hiding somewhere nearby because he didn't want them to see him reading TPT comics. The bells that Mirtala wears are there because she is very quiet and if she didn’t have them they would have lost her ages ago. she’s stopped running away but she likes the bells so she keeps them on.

Aquato family service dog! A Great Dane they end up naming Muffin thanks to Mirtala calling him that and it just stuck

The Aquato’s post-psychonauts 2 end up setting up residence at the campsite. Until they get enough money to start traveling again, the circus is hosted at the Questionable Area in a slightly better spot then out in the Parking Lot! They end up getting a lot of attention, enough to make the old flapjack restaurant get a deep cleaning and put back out there with actual staff this time

As a thank you towards the family, along with a general “Sorry about almost getting your son killed like three times in a week” gift, Truman uses some of that money to afford to get the Aquato family as a whole a service/therapy dog

He’s signed under Augustus’s name though, as he’s technically for Augustus. Muffin is trained to cover his blind spot and stand at Augustus’s right so no one can sneak up on him, as in my heart of hearts he IS blind in his scarred eye.

But Muffin is also trained as a therapy dog! He’s a good patient boy who lays in peoples laps when they need to be grounded, and just him being around tends to lighten a room enough to get a proper conversation going instead of the usual arguing or tenseness.

Muffin is also trained in doing the same for the kids + Donatella, essentially whoever’s handling him get plenty of guarding and lots of love.

He’s surprisingly good for helping the family with their swimming fears and waterphobia!

Basically all is right with the world when the Aquato’s have a family dog

A religious headcanon - Romani actually have their own religion! And a way of expressing their religion. I think that Donatella, while having Romani roots, was Catholic for her childhood and Augustus both adopted some of the Catholic holidays, and taught Donatella about her roots.

An Angst Headcanon - Donatella and Augustus mostly keep their children sheltered because of Augustus's loss of his father (and later revealed his mother). They're terrified that if they go too far away from home, they'll die. Especially with the water curse. This is why Augustus talked to Raz about the family's enemies and how "I only wanted you to be happy, Razputin. And safe." (Augustus, Psychonauts 1)

Sexuality Headcanons * Nona - thinks labels are pretty neat, has a variety that she changes to depending on her mood and use of colors for things. Sometimes bi, sometimes pan, sometimes omni, sometimes ally because that's a pretty neat flag in her opinion. * Augustus - Augustus labels himself more cause he thinks that's what people are supposed to do, but takes it in the broadest sense he can. He likes the colors of the bi flag, though sometimes labels himself as pan. * Donatella - Donatella I think has found the bi label a long time ago and kept it. She doesn't like the change things in the community, but after PN2 when she's accepting of psychics she's like "You know what, fuck it, if someone wants to be in a relationship where they identify using a label than what business is it to me?" * Dion - Dion found the bi flag and loved the colors. He's been rizzing up ladies and fellows whenever he could during circus shows to get a little extra tip money. Doesn't quite get the extra omni or pan labels until he hangs around the Motherlobe and meets people like that. * Frazie - Lesbian. She tried to like guys but they weren't her style. She only liked girls. * Raz - he's confused cause he doesn't hit puberty and "the talk" made him uncomfortable, but a little while after puberty is in swing he starts to realize he's bi. Honestly, I think Raz would be attracted to those who are on far ends of the gender spectrum. He's a mix of "I want their gender" and "I want to kiss them" when seeing manly men and tomboys, and when he sees feminine boys and feminine girls he is silently hoping to "sweep them off their feet." * Mirtala - No label yet, I think finds labels to be too constrictive and choses to have no label and date anyone. * Queepie - No label yet, grows up with him adopting the aro/ace label.

Lili only ran away to camp quite literally due to the “what if I ran away my parents are getting kinda annoying” kid phase. They were only “annoying” because they wanted to keep her safe given that there’s only three of them
