Rabbit Downtimes, Part 2

(More downtime actions from a recent Mage chronicle.)

Rabbit sat at the small desk in his long stay hotel room. He opened up Tor an loaded the WeirdNet page. It was a forum for all the weirdness that lurked on the internet, and he'd been a member for nearly seven years now. He checked the main forum and saw that the thread for the "Death Database" had new posts.

It was an ongoing mystery that had been uncovered long before he joined the forum - someone had stumbled across a database that contained a list of people and the date and times of their death. Not particularly interesting, except that many of dates had been in the future... and those predictions had always come to pass.

The page loaded and he read with interest. It seems that Barbara Mclintock was scheduled to die yesterday at 10:43 PM and to all appearances still seemed to be alive. Or at least someone was still updating her social media and reporting to work. Rabbit settled in to read the speculation about what might be going on.

Rabbit was watching a compilation of improbable physical feats on YouTube - things like bouncing a ping pong ball off of three surfaces and landing it in a cup or making two blind half court shots in a row. The video ended with a clip of someone generating a random word from a website and then opening a dictionary to the exact page for the word. As the book opened on the screen Rabbit felt the telltale brush of wind that signaled the presence of the supernatural - it was coming from the video. Hello, what have we here?

It was powerpoint night at The Gates, a monthly event where people gave fifteen minute speeches on something they were passionate about. Bogart had invited Rabbit to attend at their first meeting, and he had taken them up on the offer. The presentation ranged from silly to dead serious and he was meeting a lot of people.

Bogart took the podium back from a rather grim man from their cabal who was the leader of the local minutemen and had given a rather grim talk about what to do if you suspect you're being targeted by the Seers.

"On a lighter note, we've got a mage that is new to the area. Please give a warm welcome to Rabbit, who is going to be talking about... Ten Reasons Why You Should Fear Bugs Bunny's Astral Reflection."

There were some chuckles and clapping, and someone at the back shouted "He's right and he should say it!"

Rabbit made his way to the front of the theater and took the podium.

Rabbit leaned back and took a sip of his iced coffee. The blog post he was writing for his day job was coming along, but the work left him feeling unfulfilled. Luckily, he knew what to do when he needed to feel like he was doing something that mattered and made a difference in people's lives.

He reached down into his laptop bag and rummaged around until he pulled out a business card. It was pale green with the gray silhouette of a rabbit on one side and the words "Need help?" He didn't look at the back, but knew it said "Ask the local Internet Wizard for Help, No Charge" and listed his rigorously anonymous website where people could contact him.

He focused his will on a spell, a Ruling of Fate, and chanted in high speech over the card and then stood and went to the balcony of his hotel room. The warmth of the LA afternoon was something he was going to have to get used to. He pulled his hand back and then flung the card into the space high above the street below, edge on like a playing card. A sudden gust of wind caught it and it soared out over the city and out of sight.

The fate spell would ensure that it would find its way to someone in desperate need of an ethical hacker within the next day or so. Satisfied for now, he returned to his work on the blog post.

The M20 Technocracy Reloaded Kickstarter starts at 2pm Eastern US time tomorrow, Tuesday, April 28th!

We’re looking to create a Deluxe-style book to match the M20 Deluxe on the shelf, so the Kickstarter is to add all the Deluxe bells and whistles. The inside will, of course, feature the full-color design and beautiful art our Deluxe books are known for, and includes these features:

An Operative’s Handbook that provides a detailed overview of life in the Technocratic Union, describing the organization of the Union, the Conventions, and the roles that sympathizers, extraordinary citizens, and Enlightened Operatives play in the overall structure of the Technocracy.

An examination of Technocratic initiatives on a global scale.

Devices, procedures, and hypertech used by the Technocratic Union that explores the Enlightened Science, allowing operatives to apply similar effects in the field, if they have sufficient understanding of the principles that allow these gadgets to function.

A comprehensive list of citizens, cyborgs, operatives, progenitor creations, and allies to use as NPCs.

Storyteller support that explores story seeds and metaplot to shape a chronicle for their needs.

More than a year ago, I polled our original M20 KS backers to see if they even wanted a KS for this project, as well as Victorian M20, and WOOO! did they! Original backers know that we never reached the final Stretch Goal that would have been used to finish and create this book – it was a big one – so I think they’ve been revved up for it for quite some time!

So, we’ve planned the project in order to bring this forward and we hope both those M20 backers and the many folks who discovered M20 since the original KS get a chance to check this out tomorrow!

What Else Are We Doing During Our Shut-In Time?

We’re adding some sales and project options to our current schedule in order to make it easier to buy and play our games during this time when our community has both shut-in and with financial challenges:

The IPR Bundle sale featuring our extra KSed books and Screens bundled together is still ongoing, and you can find the info below in the Blurbs! section featuring our sales partners!

Then, starting Wednesday, all of our Jumpstart PDFs will be free on DTRPG with a new sale we’re doing to give folks a chance to try out our many game lines! If you’ve ever wondered about a line, wanted to try it out, then this is a great chance to get a starting adventure and some pre-generated characters to give it a try with!

We’ve also been looking at ways we can provide lower price-point projects beyond the sales, and we have started a few initiatives with that in mind.

For example, in addition to their larger, planned, PDFs, we’ll be offering some of our current projects broken into separate, smaller, PDFs. We’ll be starting with Chronicles of Darkness: Dark Eras 2, and when the single-volume PDF and PoD goes on sale in a couple of weeks, we’ll also offer individual chapter PDFs.

We’re hoping that will allow folks to pick up the chapters relevant to their current gaming for a much reduced cost. We’re also looking at other projects we can offer in the same way, that I’ll announce as we move on them.

For our community that has discovered the wonders of gaming with their friends virtually, through streaming or through Virtual Table Top venues like Roll20 or Astral, we’re building token and adventure/map packs to make that experience easier. I’ve already seen and OK’d packs for Scion, Scarred Lands, and the Trinity Continuum which we’ll have up and available very soon.

As always, we also continue to look to ways to help the many creators who we rely on for all their phenomenal work on our projects. Especially during this time of uncertainty. So we’re doing another Developer Town Hall Day next week where our Onyx Path crew will be available for our developers to check in with in a couple of designated time blocks since our devs live around the world and some are still doing their full-time jobs.

Our Dev Town Hall last month went great, so we’re hoping this one will be helpful for all our devs as well. This time though, I’m opening up the discussions just a bit to all of you folks.

As we find ways to enable our community to more easily play our games, the Onyx Dice Rolling App is live! Our dev team has been doing updates since we launched based on the excellent use-case comments by our community, and this thing is awesome! (Seriously, you need to roll 100 dice for Exalted? This app has you covered.)

Update: the devs are working on the updates for the roller in both Android and iOS; here is the rundown from them:

1) Redo the UI for system for Android. It will look the same as the current design. My goal is to have something ready by Saturday to send out to the Facebook users, asking them if this fixes the issues. This will be a beta type thing. This will break several of the fancy dice.

2) If the above worked out and the android users give all the clear, we’ll redo the graphics system to fix the fancy dice that got broken. We’ll do another Android beta through Facebook. This might take up to two weeks, as my schedule allows.

3) If everything worked well, we’ll release to Android for real at that point.

4) Port all of the existing stuff to iOS and release on that.

A Chat with Beth Lisick

Edie on the Green Screen is an irreverent love-letter to San Francisco, chronicling the story of a 90s "It girl" as she ages-in-place and confronts the Bay Area tech monoculture. The author, Beth Lisick, is also an actress, co-founder of the Porchlight Storytelling Series, and one of the sharpest, quick-witted people that we know. You can read more about Beth here. Edie on the Green Screen is her first novel.

On April 1st, 2020, City Lights planned to celebrate the publication at the bookstore. Given the “Shelter in Place” order by the city of San Francisco, staff retreated to their homes, and City Lights continued to work, remotely. Stacey Lewis, VP, Director of PR, Marketing & Sales, conducted a Twitter chat on April Fool’s Day with Beth reporting from her living room in Berkeley, CA. Here follows a transcript of that conversation.

City Lights: Beth!!! Where are you?

I'm in New York, kinda near Woodstock and Kingston.

What are you doing to stay sane?

I’m cooking a lot! And trying to go out on hikes. Hanging out with my husband and son and also my brother’s family.

For how long did you work on your novel?

This is embarrassing to say but I wrote the first words of it almost 10 years ago!

Are you in a writing group? Or do you share things with particular friends for feedback?

I’ve never been in a formal writing group but I have a few friends, writers and non-writers alike, that I will share things with.

Ah! That felt niiiiiice.

What are some of the differences you noticed working with indie vs corporate presses?

A lot of it has to do with the publicity and marketing part. On mainstream presses I always felt like I had to convince them that I was worthwhile. Their budgets aren’t necessarily going to you anyway and I feel much more comfortable with my indie press relationships. More personal.

Can you talk about your publisher 7.13 Books and how you came to work with them?

My friend Alex Behr was published by 7.13 and she introduced me to Leland [Leland Cheuk, publisher of 7.13 Books]. He is from the Bay Area but lives in Brooklyn now. He understood my Bay Area vibe! He is committed to doing debuts, but since this was my debut novel, he squeezed me onto the roster.

For how long have you lived away from the Bay Area?

It will be eight years this summer! So long. But luckily I come back a lot for Porchlight and to see my friends and parents.

Your novel clearly pulls from your own experiences in the Bay. How did you recall the memories? Do you keep a journal?

I keep various notebooks and write notes in my phone. I also like to quiet my brain and sort of meditate memories or experiences into my consciousness. (clearly from Northern California)

I was thinking that. Did the physical distance from San Francisco give you freedom to write about it?

YES. Even more than I imagined. I had a lot more free time once I moved to New York because I didn’t know anyone. It was a nice way to get a different perspective. Being across the country.

Do you think it would have been harder constructing this story if you were still living here?

Yes. I had gotten myself into a place where I was so upset with the changes in the Bay Area that I was too crabby to write about it. The first drafts were very cynical and angry. It’s hard not to feel like it’s been taken over. I like to think that even though there are huge buildings and all that money and new people who don’t seem to care about the things I cared about, that those things will still surface.

My audiobook is almost done! It’s the first time I’ve ever been able to record my own audiobook so I’m really excited about it.

CL: Oh! I can't wait to hear that!!! San Francisco was, for many of us in the 80s & 90s, a place to continue “growing up,” as we could afford to do so. Edie, in the novel, is so relatable. What is it about her that makes her so stubborn to change?

Edie’s whole personality was shaped by bands and bars and art and a certain aesthetic that was prevalent in San Francisco in the 90s. When that disappears, she’s not quite sure what to do.

No, you are my hero. And, you are truly bi-coastal, regularly coming back to SF to co-host the wonderful Porchlight Storytelling Series, and to see your family. What’s it like having deep roots on both coasts?

If I can’t be a true bisexual at least I can be bi-coastal. And I do love living in New York so I’m still glad that I moved. I like being so deeply from the Bay Area and knowing it so well. And I also love the anonymity of being in New York. No millions of old personal stories to trip you up or slow you down.

Or running into anyone you slept with. Speaking of the Porchlight, what have you learned about storytelling after so many years of organizing these events?

I think that's why I was able to write this book. I have learned so much from the way people tell stories at Porchlight. Not only structurally but as far as really paying attention to what feels authentic and what feels put on.

If you had a piece of advice to share with your younger self, what would it be?

Maybe to step back and listen even more. I was so energetic and enthusiastic about putting myself out there in my 20s but I learned so much once I shut up and chilled out a bit.

@Superprose1 asks: Curious ~ how does novel writing compare to memoir ?

It felt very liberating to me to write a novel after writing so much memoir. I didn’t have to worry about being accurate, I could just be truthful. I could try out different thoughts and feelings on another character without having to claim it as my own.

FebruarOC Day 10: Jared

When Jared woke, it took him a few moments to recognize that he was warm and comfortable, curled up in a real bed for the first time in months. It took a few more moments for him to realize he couldn’t feel Will nearby.

The realization caused panic to spike through the sleepy haze, and Jared bolted upright, fighting his way out of the blankets wrapped around him. He was in a dimly lit tent, and a few feet away was another cot, occupied by a Will-shaped pile of blankets.

“Will!” Jared gasped, nearly falling on his face in his haste to get out of his own bed.

The blankets stirred, and as Jared stumbled to his side, Will’s head appeared, blinking sleepily at Jared. What’s wrong?

Jared breathed a sigh of relief, sinking to the ground next to Will. “Nothing,” he said. “I just didn’t know where you were.”

Will wiggled until his arms were free of the blankets so he could pat Jared on the head. We’re okay, he said.

“Yeah.” Jared didn’t quite believe him though. Yes, Will could see the future, but Jared knew the ability was unreliable and confusing at best, so he couldn’t bring himself to have the same faith that Will did.

Will frowned. Jared—

“How do you feel?” Jared asked, cutting Will off.

Will huffed at Jared, but answered easily. Better. Tired.

“That’s good,” Jared said. “That you’re better now. Go back to sleep, I shouldn’t have woken you up.”

What about you? Will asked.

“I’m fine,” Jared said, despite the temptation to return to the warm cocoon he’d woken up in and sleep for another few weeks. No matter Will’s conviction, he couldn’t bring himself to trust these lowlanders, even if they did have Lysander with them. Pretty words and promises on the gods that had abandoned them meant nothing to Jared now. Even those from the mountains could betray them, not to mention the fact that his side still hurt where the boy, Finn, had hit him with a knife.

Will sighed. Come here.

“I’m fine,” Jared insisted.

Come here, Will repeated, reaching for Jared with such a pathetic look that Jared felt bad trying to resist.

Jared sighed and got back to his feet. “Fine. Scoot over.” He returned to his own cot briefly to grab the blankets so he could throw them on top of Will, earning a rare audible squeak of surprise, then he climbed into bed next to Will, making sure he was between his brother and the entrance to the tent.

We’re okay, Will said, obviously noticing the protective movement.

Jared huffed. “Don’t complain.”

Will pointedly dug his elbow into Jared’s back, but otherwise didn’t respond. Jared heard his breathing slow as he drifted back to sleep, and resisted the urge to do the same.

Will could believe they were safe all he wanted. Jared would make sure nobody could hurt him.

JUNIOR OFFICERS

With statistics and systems of their own, the Junior Officers are here! They fight directly at your side, attacking with you, using their own special powers. Pick from a long list of templates and re-flavour them into your Junior Officers.

ROLES

ANTIQUARIAN Antiquarian has proven time and time again that it is the ‘because I have to’ pick for casters, who largely only take it because someone else stole Arcanist. This is going to be fixed by making them the most versatile of all the roles, by giving them multiple powers.Note that each role power can be used once, so an antiquarian can use both Shutdown and Risk Assessment in the same quest.

New - Power: Risk Assessment Cost: 5 Leadership

At the start of your turn, you may choose a number of creatures within 30 feet of you up to your proficiency bonus. For each of those creatures, you may ask the DM three of the following questions about that creature, learning the answer:· The creature’s AC.

The creature’s physical ability scores: Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution.

The creature’s mental ability scores: Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.

The creature’s damage vulnerabilities.

The creature’s damage resistances.

The creature’s damage immunities.

The creature’s condition immunities.

Whether the creature has any special senses, what those special senses are, and the distance they reach to.

If the creature can cast any spells, and the highest level of spell available to it.

COMMANDER The lieutenant’s Field Control is an excellent ability that everyone seems to always enjoy, and the fact that Commanders don’t seem to have anything like it is somewhat disheartening.Commander’s Voice isn’t really an effect of the role on the game, it’s just part of the Chain of Command, so changing it into something more interesting is more in tune.

Rework - Commander’s Voice At the start of each of your turns, you may choose a number of creatures within 30 feet of you up to your proficiency bonus. For each chosen creature, you may increase or decrease that creature’s initiative result by 1.

If moving a creature’s initiative would cause its initiative to overtake yours (which would cause it to lose its turn), it takes its next turn immediately after yours. Alternatively, if this feature would cause a creature to take a second turn in a round, that creature does not take a second turn.

NEW - DEFENDER We can always use more roles, and a role for tanks is an excellent idea

Prerequisites: AC of 18 or higher, proficiency in heavy armour Defenders act as front-line protectors of their allies, taking the hits so they don’t have to. The defend is first on the field, and last to go down.

Role Effect – Endurance Whenever a creature rolls damage against you, you reduce that incoming damage by an amount equal to half your proficiency bonus.

Role Power – Bulwark Cost: 10 Leadership Whenever a creature within 15 feet of you would suffer damage that is not poison or psychic type from a source that you can see, you may use your reaction, moving up to half your speed to an unoccupied space within 5 feet of the target. Ignis’ Favorite Foods (And What They Say About Him)

1. Fluffy Chiffon Cake

This is my favorite of Ignis’ favorites. Chiffon cake is one of the bets cakes. I it’s light, airy and not too sweet. It’s also one of the newest--it has only been around since the 1920s. An American insurance salesman invented the cake, but he carefully guarded the recipe. He served the cake at a chain of restaurants in Hollywood (The Brown Derby) where it became popular with celebrities. It was eventually sold to General Mills and the recipe was released nationwide in 1947. It was backed by a big marketing campaign that made it a hit (source).

Ignis initially seems like a man who isn’t much for desserts and sweets, so this favorite surprised me, but I immediately found it endearing. This no nonsense, hard working badass loves chiffon cake. After a little investigation, I discovered that Japan has its own unique take on chiffon cake that may help explain Ignis’ love for it. Japanese Chiffon cake is very similar to the traditional American recipe, but it’s often prepared in different pans and sliced like the one yousee in game (check out this guide). It is also prepared as a cupcake--like these Hokkaido chiffon cupcakes.

It’s easy to imagine Ignis coming across one of those Hokkaido style Chiffon cupcakes at an Insomnia coffee shop. Maybe he frequently stopped at a coffee place that sold them (we know he’s a coffee addict). It makes me happy to think of Ignis enjoying a piece of this cake with a cup of coffee. It is an uncomplicated pleasure that he richly deserves.

2. Breaded Cutlet with Tomato

This dish looks a lot like Japanese chicken Katsu. Chicken katsu is similar to Western schnitzel dishes. It’s got a tasty, crunchy, panko exterior and is often served with a tart sauce (the Japanese version seems to be served with curry quite often). The FFXV version includes a Lucian tomato sauce. I wonder if this dish is a bit of a “comfort food” back in Insomnia. I can imagine Ignis eating a dish like this a lot when he was growing up. It’s hearty, but somehow light and no doubt one of the few dishes involving vegetables that Noctis would readily eat.

3. Fisherman’s Favorite Paella

Paella is a classic (and delicious) Spanish dish (specifically from Valencia). The word “paella” is derived from the Spanish word for pan -- a reference to the special kind of pan used for paella. The foundation of a paella dish is saffron infused rice. The aromatic saffron makes it delicious and gives it the distinctive yellow hue. There are many kinds of ingredients you can put into a paella--chorizo, chicken, seafood--it all depends on the variety of paella you want.

Ignis’ favorite paella is a seafood version. Seafood paella is definitely one of the more popular forms. All kinds of seafood can be used, but it’s traditional to include some shellfish (like the mussels you see in the photo of Iggy’s favorite). Paella is a hearty, aromatic dish that is very popular worldwide. Ignis’ preferred version, though, speaks of someone with slightly more expensive tastes (though that depends greatly on what part of the world you live in).

This dish is acquired by ordering it at the Mother of Pearl restaurant. Given Ignis’ penchant for seafood, it’s not surprising one of his favorite dishes comes from one of the best seafood restaurants on Eos. When you visit Galdin Quay, Ignis will “idle” around the Mother of Pearl, watching Coctura cook. Occasionally, I’ve seen players suggest Ignis has a “crush” on Coctura, but I think this is a professional sort of interest--one chef admiring another.

4. Horntooth Meatpie

I know Ignis only has a British accent in the EN version of the game, but this meat pie is a very Anglo choice. You get the recipe for this dish by observing a female hunter eating it outside the Meldacio General Store (I’m always amused by scenes like this--4 guys staring at you while you eat). The fact that it’s a hunter favorite suggests this is a very hearty dish. This fave is just more evidence that Ignis isn’t particularly snobbish about food.

5. Tomalley-Filled Dumplings

I thought I knew a lot about food going into FFXV, but I had never eaten “tomalley” before and didn’t have a very good idea of what it was. Some seafood fans probably already know this, but tomalley is actually the pancreas/liver of a cooked shellfish (oftentimes a lobster). It has a soft green color and, according to Cook’s Illustrated, is valued for its creamy texture and intense flavor. It’s typically used in sauces or in compound butter. I was surprised to discover that some people believe it's not safe to eat. This is due to the fact that tomalley ingestion can sometimes lead to the contraction of “paralytic shellfish poisoning”, but evidently it’s mainly a risk during red tides. Ignis likes to live on the wild side! In the JP version, the dish references “kani miso’ which loosely translates to “crab brain”. The “kani miso” however refers to the same thing tomalley does (a green paste of innards). Maybe it feels better say you are eating a crab brain instead of a mish mash of its organs? In any case, it’s also considered a delicacy in Japan.

I think this dish further confirms that Ignis has a refined palate and a taste for expensive seafood. Someone who frequently eats lobster could very easily develop a taste for the rarer bits of that celebrated crustacean. Noctis even jokes that Ignis should be thrilled when they fight giant crabs with bone crushing pincers (but Ignis replies “what they have gained in size they will have lost in flavor”). Apparently Ignis has a shellfish reputation.

To unlock the Tomalley-Filled Dumplings, you have to read Oric’s Culinary Chronicles, entry 5 (which is sitting on a bench near the bridge in Old Lestallum). It makes sense a story about a “river crawler” would lead to a recipe involving tomalley. What else can we infer from this? I’m not sure we can really connect the entry to Ignis (or Old Lestallum). That said, there was once a theory Ignis was related to Oric, but that will have to wait for another post.

6. Feast of the Divine

Next to Kenny’s Original Recipe, this is the strangest item on Ignis’ list. This dish is prepared by Gentiana in the Comrades DLC (before Comrades became a standalone you could only acquire te recipe after she made it). Noctis’ favorite Comrades dish is prepared by Cid, Prompto's is made by Cindy and Gladio’s is prepared by Cor. Many speculated that Ignis’ fave would be Aranea’s, but not many guessed it would be Gentiana’s.

Genti’s dish is complex and beautiful to look at. It features extremely expensive ingredients and gives good buffs. Does Ignis love this dish simply because it is the most sophisticated? The best tasting? The most beautiful? Any of those could be good answers., but if you break out the tinfoil you can go further. Does Ignis love Gentiana’s dish because he knows her well? Is Ignis himself some type of astral? Or a messenger?

Very far fetched, but since we have very limited background info on Ignis it’s tempting to invent theories to explain his past.

7. Kenny’s Original Recipe

This one is hard to reconcile. How could a man of such culinary sophistication love something like this?? I’m not even sure what it actually is. It is clearly a salmon fillet, but it’s not clear what is covering it. Some believe that it’s pastry, others think that it might be a cheese topping like some sort of cursed tuna melt. Personally, I think it looks like mozzarella cheese. I did come across a bizarre thing at Japanese KFCs--deep fried salmon bites. That might be similar to Kenny’s.

You might think this is just something that Ignis settles for when the bros go to the Crow’s Nest--a sort of adaptation to cope with their many visits to Kenny’s place. This would seem like a good explanation, but he doesn't just tolerate it--he loves it! The little sprite Ignis leaps for joy when you select it. It almost seems hypocritical after Ignis’ snarky remark to Prompto implying Crow’s Nest fare was unhealthy and fattening.

It’s possible the dish holds some special place in Ignis’ heart. It seems like the Crow’s Nest chain is only outside the walls of Insomnia, but it’s possible a Crow’s Nest or two made it into the city. Maybe Kenny’s Original Recipe reminds Ignis of some fond moments from his childhood. Maybe it was a dish someone from his family really loved. Maybe he saw an ad for it when he was small and always wanted to try it. Maybe his inner Guy Fieri is coming out. Maybe Kenny intimidated him into liking the dish.

Who knows, but the fact that Ignis loves this is just one more of the many mysteries about Ignis.

Taken together, these dishes reveal a man who has sophisticated, yet not elitist tastes. A man who appreciates fine dining and the comfort of a home cooked meal. Most importantly, we know that he appreciates a good cake. I hope you get to have all of your favorites today, Ignis. 🎈Happy birthday!! 🎈

Queerness and Death in The Magicians by SE Fleenor (The Removed Syfy Article)

SPOILERS FOR THE MAGICIANS SEASON 4 FINALE!

By now you already know that The Magicians’ Quentin Coldwater died in the Season 4 finale. Yes, D-E-D, dead. There’s no resurrection in the works and no trick of astral projection or Niffin state of higher being can bring sweet, depressed, narcissistic Quentin back.

The decision to kill off a major character — the major character, if the Lev Grossman novels still mean anything (they don’t) — is almost always controversial. But we live in the day and age of Game of Thronesand The Walking Dead and Thanos snapping half of the Avengers (and the universe) into nothingness. Any character could die at any moment (and sometimes all of the characters could die at any moment) and that’s the brave, new, kill-happy world our media is made in.

So, why does it matter that Quentin is dead?

Well, my friends, let’s revisit a little trope we like to call Bury Your Gays. Throughout media representations of queer folks, reaching back to 19th-century Victorian novels, the formula has been about the same: An LGBTQ+ character is introduced, they reveal their sexuality or an attraction to a specific person, and then they die, die, die, often horrifically. This trope is also called Dead Lesbian Syndrome due to the overwhelming number of queer women who have been slaughtered onscreen — not exactly the representation queer women have been begging for.

Back when archaic censorship laws ruled the page and the screen, writing about queer characters was taboo and the only way queer writers, or folks who wanted to create queer characters, could include LGBTQ+ characters was by portraying them unfavorably. Queer characters could exist, but only as a warning of what a “perverted” life would bring you. So, in order to get some kind of representation, LGBTQ+ characters had to suffer.

Sounds a little rough, huh? Like who would really bury their gays? Oh, just Buffy the Vampire Slayer, True Blood, The 100, The Walking Dead, The Expanse, Jessica Jones, Xena, Smallville, Battlestar Galactica, Hex, Torchwood, Hemlock Grove, Teen Wolf, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Dracula, The Vampire Diaries, Arrow, Salem, American Horror Story, Ascension, Lost Girl, Scream, The Shannara Chronicles, The Exorcist, Van Helsing, Doctor Who, Gotham, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Purge, and last but not least (and not for the first time): The Magicians.

Let it be noted that I have only included science fiction, fantasy, and horror TV shows on this list and only those that I know about. The list is much, much longer when you include non-genre TV shows and film. (Autostraddle has a very complete list of queer women on TV who have been killed off, for those of you who feel like being sad.)

Oh, did you recognize a bunch of queer-friendly shows in that list? Does that somehow feel like a violation of the promise made when a series goes out of its damn way to present itself as queer and feminist?

EXACTLY. And, that, my sweet babies, is why people are pissed about the death of Quentin Coldwater, generally speaking. We’re sick of seeing queer characters die over and over again. But, what specifically about the death of Quentin is so frustrating? I’m so glad you asked.

Full disclosure: I'm not going to get into the creators' rationale for killing off Quentin. I've read all the interviews with the creators and with Jason Ralph, who plays Quentin, and they all read like a whole lot of familiar BS. (At least Hale Appelman, who plays Eliot, gets it.)

In the first season of The Magicians, Quentin, Eliot, and Margot have a threesome. It’s the first time Quentin has sex with a man, as far as we know, and it’s the first time we see him start to confront his queerness. In Season 3’s “A Life in the Day,” Quentin and Eliot end up in a different Fillory, from before they were born, where they must solve an unsolvable puzzle. As they spend a lifetime working on the mosaic, they fall in love, raise a child, and make their queer family work. Upon returning to the main timeline, barely a word is spoken about their encounter, and queer folks everywhere braced ourselves for that experience to be treated as an anomaly from another timeline. (Another weird queer trope where characters get to be LGBTQ+, but only elsewhere or else when or, or, or…)

Season 4 brought unexpected twists and turns, such as Eliot being trapped inside his own mind by the Monster. With that, many a fan prepared to let Queliot rest. And, then “Escape from the Happy Place,” took us into Eliot’s mind and — after exploring a lot of deep trauma that has a particularly queer flavor to it — back to the day Eliot and Quentin came back from their lifetime in Fillory. As they sit on the steps of the throne room, Memory Quentin and Memory Eliot talk about what happened between them. Memory Quentin asks Memory Eliot why they shouldn’t try to be together, saying “Who gets proof of concept like that?”

Eliot kisses Memory Quentin hard on the mouth and then walks through the door that will allow him to take control of his body for a moment. In the real world, face to face with Quentin, Eliot gets a signal out that he’s still alive. He looks at Quentin and repeats the question Quentin had asked him, following it with, “Peaches and plums, motherf*cker.” When he realizes who he’s looking at, Quentin hesitates, a look of surprise and longing washing over his face.

This deeply emotional and compelling storyline appeared at the same time that Quentin finally officially rebuffed Alice’s advances, telling her he no longer wanted to be together, that he could never see her the same way again.

Then, after all that work, after all the maturation the characters undergo, the series undoes everything, shoehorning in a last-minute declaration of love between Quentin and Alice and killing off Quentin when he uses magic in the Mirror Realm, without ever seeing Eliot again. Quentin then goes to the Underworld branch of the library and meets with Penny 40 while reminiscing over his life and pondering over whether or not he died by suicide. (The treatment of suicide in the episode is problematic and deeply offensive.)

There are probably as many critiques of this ending as there are people who watched it, but I’m going to focus on the main issues that stood out to me.

The series has gone out of its way to confirm Quentin as queer and tease the possibility of a queer love story.

Queer viewers are used to surviving off subtext and tend to be fairly generous in what we’ll accept. Seriously, many a queer considers Thor: Ragnarok to be part of the queer canon when it’s not even implied onscreen that anyone is queer, and have you seen people shipping Carol and Maria in Captain Marvel? Maybe it’s because we’re used to being served scraps that the Bury Your Gays trope feels so pointed. Oh, you’re not happy with the almosts and the could-haves and the alternate timelines of queerness? Well, then we’ll make your characters queer and just murder ‘em right up.

After Season 3, The Magicians could have never acknowledged the relationship between Quentin and Eliot that takes place in another timeline or they could have shrugged and been like, “Must have been the opium in the air!” They’d already done as much with the threesome in Season 1 and all but ignoring Quentin's queerness in the episodes that follow. The series didn’t have to confirm that Quentin wanted to follow his attraction to Eliot and give being together a try. But, The Magiciansdid. The series took the time onscreen to show Eliot and Quentin kissing again, to show Eliot declaring his love for Quentin in their own code, and to show Quentin dedicate his time to helping Eliot get free.

Furthermore, how messed up is it that the series spends a significant amount of time dredging up the trauma of Eliot’s queer youth only to make him realize his biggest regret is how he treated Quentin, just for Quentin to be forced back into the closet? An episode that was deeply evocative and affirming of queerness smacks of voyeurism when taken in the context of the finale.

At the last minute, after confirming his queerness, the series forces a relationship between Quentin and Alice.

It’s hard not to see the last ditch shoving of Quentin and Alice together as an attempt to shove Quentin himself back in the closet. Season 4 shows Quentin rejecting and wanting to be apart from Alice, only for him to decide that he loves her and wants to give their relationship another try because? Honestly, I’m not sure what rationale he uses because it MAKES NO SENSE. And, what the hell does he think of imprisoned-in-his-own-body Eliot while making this decision? To judge from the series, not a whole hell of a lot.

It’s totally cool if queer or bisexual characters date people of different genders — that’s not the issue. The issue is that without a moment of hesitation, Quentin whiplashes from his lover who he knows is trapped by the Monster and cannot see, hear, or reach him to his ex-girlfriend who he has distanced himself from due to her selfish behavior.

In the context of his death, I like to call this particularly messed up turn of events “Bury Your Gays and Stomp On Their Graves” because all the work that had been done to show Quentin’s coming to terms with his own sexuality is undone shortly before he dies.

There are other ways to write a character off a series.

A lot of people fall back on bad faith arguments like: what is a show supposed to do when an actor no longer wishes to appear in the series?

The answer, of course, is: ANYTHING ELSE. They could have done literally anything else to write Quentin out of the show and release Jason Ralph from his commitment. The Magicians takes place in a world WHERE MAGIC EXISTS, where characters leave the main story to go on their own adventures, and where average human beings can become gods. There’s no excuse for falling into lazy storytelling and reifying a trope that has been well-documented and mourned for a long time.

In the novels, Quentin gets kicked out of Fillory and decides to use his discipline, minor mendings, to build a new world for himself and Alice. He essentially walks through a door and never comes back. THAT WOULD HAVE WORKED and it wouldn’t do the work of retraumatizing queer audiences.

It comes down to this: To ignore the wider implications of making a character specifically queer, having him return to his prior unhealthy relationship with a woman, and then killing him off is a disservice to queer people everywhere. It is, at once, a declaration of the meaninglessness of the queer experience and an unforgivable reminder of the expendability of queer lives.

Series like The Magicians (and before it, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) trade on their reputations as queer and feminist shows. We watch them for their powerful women and their kickass queer characters and their storylines that affirm the power of survival. And what do they give us in return? They bury their gays.

Does that mean that all LGBTQ+ characters should be immortal? The rational response would be: of course not. Up until today I may have agreed with that argument, but right now I’m feeling a little less generous. It’s 20-f*cking-19 and there is no excuse for Bury Your Gays to pop up in a progressive TV show. Maybe until series and creators who make their money off queer characters and queer fandom take responsibility for how they use the lives and bodies of queer people, maybe until then, all LGBTQ+ characters should be immortal.

I’m pretty damn sick of watching every character who loves like me, who looks like me, who explores the bounds of their sexuality like me, die. I’m sick of watching characters bust down the doors of the closets that held them back only to have their queerness erased or elided through their deaths. I’m sick of watching relationships between men and women blossom onscreen only to see queer relationships torn apart by death.

Queer people deserve happy endings. We deserve them in real life and we deserve to see them onscreen and we deserve them now.

Until that’s the norm, you better damn well consider any queer character you create immortal. Because if you don’t, we queers will f*cking haunt your basic ass.

Nintendo Direct E3 2019 Highlights - Part 2

And we’re back! Miss us? That’s understandable. Now where were we? Oh yes. Approaching the end of this year’s Nintendo Direct at E3 2019. What’s next?

Well we guess it’s time to get the negative out of the way. With the highs from the likes of ‘Luigi’s Mansion 3′ and surprises like ‘No More Heroes III’ inevitably comes a low. Sadly ‘Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ has been delayed until 20th March 2020. We guarantee that we’re just as upset as you are about this but Nintendo have cited their reasons being that it needs more time to become the absolute best it can be. We appreciate your perfectionism, Nintendo! But this one hurts. We did however get a trailer which we’ve dropped for you below. We’ll get through this wait together!

We’re now approaching the end and the Direct is drawing to its close. We’re saddened and somewhat knackered from all these epic announcements. A good lay down is needed in order to process and reflect. But wait... Could there be? One more? Oh go on then. What ya got?

We knew there’d be Link’s Awakening. We were prepared but not for this. WE DID NOT SEE THIS COMING. Nintendo already have a sequel to ‘The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’ in the works!
