The global recession in democracy (The Economist) [In the wake of the election, there has been] a further partisan deterioration in American democracy. It is also part of a global democratic recession. The collapse of the Soviet Union led to a flourishing in the number and quality of liberal democracies, but the trend has now gone into reverse. Hungary and Poland are blocking the European Union budget because their governments refuse to bow to the rule of law. In the world’s largest democracy the Bharatiya Janata Party (bjp) under Narendra Modi is capturing institutions, including the courts, the police and now, it is feared, the election commission. The Economist Intelligence Unit (eiu), our sister organisation, has been compiling a democracy index since 2006. Last year’s score was the worst ever. Covid-19 has accelerated the decline. The threat is not from military coups but governments in power. Given time, unscrupulous leaders can hollow out democracy completely. Two decades ago Venezuela held meaningful elections; today it is about to eliminate the last kernel of opposition. But even in countries where such a calamity is unthinkable, the erosion of norms and institutions leads to worse government.
Los Angeles orders more restrictions as coronavirus surges (AP) Los Angeles County announced a new stay-home order Friday as coronavirus cases surged out of control in the nation’s most populous county, banning most gatherings but stopping short of a full shutdown on retail stores and other non-essential businesses. The three-week “safer at home” order takes effect Monday. It came as the county of 10 million residents confirmed 24 new deaths and 4,544 new confirmed cases of COVID-19. The order advises residents to stay home “as much as possible” and to wear a face covering when they go out. It bans people from gathering with others who aren’t in their households, whether publicly or privately. However, exceptions are made for church services and protests, “which are constitutionally protected rights,” the county Department of Public Health said in a statement.
El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala stage mass raids in crackdown on MS-13, Barrio 18 (AP) The Central American countries of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras have rounded up hundreds of suspected street gang members as part of a U.S.-backed effort known as “Operation Regional Shield.” The attorney general’s office in El Salvador has taken the lead, reporting that it obtained arrest warrants for 1,152 suspects, of whom 572 had been arrested by Friday. The weeklong effort particularly targeted members of the Barrio 18 and MS-13 gangs, which operate in all three countries. Most of those arrested face charges ranging from extortion and kidnapping to murder.
Belarus’ Lukashenko says he will leave his post, state media reports (NBC News) Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said he would step down after a new constitution is adopted, the state-owned BelTA news agency cited him as saying on Friday. “I am not going to shape the constitution to suit my needs,” he is quoted as saying. “I am not going to be the president once the new constitution is in place.” Belarus has been rocked by months of anti-government protests ever since Lukashenko—often referred to as “Europe’s last dictator”—claimed victory in an Aug. 9 presidential election that his opponents say was rigged, a charge he denies. It remained unclear whether Lukashenko’s comments were sincere or whether he was just paying lip service to the prospect of him stepping aside. In any case, it is the first time he has publicly reflected on how the country will be governed when he is no longer president. Lukashenko has maintained his grasp on power in the former Soviet nation for the last 26 years.
Queues at barber shops as France eases coronavirus lockdown (Reuters) People eager to get a haircut stood in line outside barber shops and department stores selling gifts and Christmas decorations were busy on Saturday as France partially reopened following a month-long lockdown. Shops selling non-essential goods such as shoes, clothes and toys reopened in the first easing of a nationwide lockdown that started on Oct. 30 and will remain in place until Dec. 15. Bars and restaurants remain closed till Jan. 20.
Pope installs new cardinals, including first African-American (Reuters) Pope Francis on Saturday installed 13 new cardinals, including the first African-American to hold the high rank. Nine of the 13 are under 80 and eligible under Church law to enter a secret conclave to choose the next pope from among themselves after Francis dies or resigns. It was Francis’ seventh consistory since his election in 2013. He has now appointed 57% of the 128 cardinal electors, most of whom share his vision of a more inclusive and outward-looking Church. Thus far, he has appointed 18 cardinals from mostly far-flung countries that never had one, nearly all of them from the developing world. In Saturday’s consistory, Brunei and Rwanda got their first cardinals. In his homily, Francis told the men to keep their eyes on God, avoid all forms of corruption, and not succumb to a “worldly spirit” that can accompany the prestige and power of their new rank.
Hong Kong leader says she has ‘piles of cash at home,’ no bank account, due to U.S. sanctions (Washington Post) Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam keeps “piles of cash” at home and is unable to open a bank account after being targeted by U.S. sanctions, according to an interview the top official gave on Friday evening. “Sitting in front of you is a chief executive of the Hong Kong SAR [Special Administrative Region] who has no banking services made available to her. I’m using cash for all the things,” Lam told HKIBC, an English-language news channel based in Hong Kong. “I have piles of cash at home, the government is paying me cash for my salary because I don’t have a bank account,” Lam added. Lam is paid around 5.21 million Hong Kong dollars, roughly $672,000, a year, making her among the highest paid public officials in the world. Despite her bravado, Lam’s remarks were widely welcomed by her critics. Some activists noted that it appeared to suggest that even Chinese banks were complying with American financial restrictions.
Iran’s supreme leader vows revenge over slain scientist (AP) Iran’s supreme leader on Saturday called for the “definitive punishment” of those behind the killing of a scientist linked to Tehran’s disbanded military nuclear program, a slaying the Islamic Republic has blamed on Israel. Israel, long suspected of killing scientists a decade ago amid tensions over Tehran’s nuclear program, has yet to comment on the killing Friday of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh. However, the attack bore the hallmarks of a carefully planned, military-style ambush. The slaying threatens to renew tensions between the U.S. and Iran in the waning days of President Donald Trump’s term, just as President-elect Joe Biden has suggested his administration could return to Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers from which Trump earlier withdrew. The Pentagon announced early Saturday that it sent the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier back into the Mideast.
Ethiopia says its military now controls the Tigray capital (AP) Ethiopia’s military has gained full control of the capital of the defiant Tigray region, the army announced Saturday after Tigray TV reported that the city of a half-million people was being “heavily bombarded” in the final push to arrest the region’s leaders. The army chief of staff, Gen. Birhanu Jula, made the comment about the military’s control of Mekele while speaking on an Ethiopian state broadcast. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said in a separate statement, “We have entered Mekele without innocent civilians being targets.” Neither mentioned the arrest of any of the leaders of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, which runs the region. The Tigray leader could not be reached. With communications cut to the region of 6 million people, it is difficult to verify claims by the warring sides. Each government regards the other as illegal.
Dispel Lockdown Woes and Hectic Holidays With Simple Tips For Boosting Mood (Good News Network) Wintertime weather, holidays, and a pandemic lockdown can make routines difficult, but practicing mindfulness can offer a solution, and be done in very simple forms. The year has been a real humdinger for some and a tragedy for others, and using mindfulness—the direct mental effort to make yourself present in each passing moment, can help remind so many of us why the holidays are a favorite time of the year. Even though the thermometers are reading low, walking is not only a great way to practice mindfulness, but it gets you out of doors—which every psychologist worth their salt would explain is great for your mental health. 1. Reduced daylight hours lead to a reduction in the natural absorption of vitamin D from UV light. Vitamin D is one of the most important biochemicals for the immune system and fighting off viruses. 2. Exposure to cold increases the brain’s production of norepinephrine, a behavioral chemical that can make you feel elated and excited. 3. Exposure to trees, sky, the stars, and nature has been shown time and time again to help improve mental well-being. Studies have shown walking in forests or in close sight of trees has been shown to lower levels of stress and anxiety.

//
SUMMARY: This delayed broadcast from the @TheAngryindian and 4th World Radyo goes further in questioning the Russiagate Scandal and asks how Indigenous and Afro-American populations fit into the Trump Administration's painfully obvious programme to 'Make America Gammon Again' through the state-sponsored utilisation of racial-profiling against non-European citizens and residents within the United States; the indefinite detention of persons according to arbitrary legal and extralegal means and once brought into the system against their will(s) these people are subjected to physical and psychological including the reported use of psychotropic drugs and sedatives aimed and reducing resistance to what is happening to them and the social media influence of Russian-backed hacker-factories situated in Eastern Europe and the Russian Republic. @TheAngryindian also takes a hard look at some of the voices of the US Left angrily dismissing allegations of Russian-meddling as American Paranoia and asks why these 'experts', when appearing on alternative news media, seem to be more interested in fighting harder for Trump and Putin than they are for Black and Brown America. Is there a reasonable explanation for their questionable behaviour, especially following Trump's treasonous performance in Helsinki? And after the Trump Administration decided to support British neo-Nazi Tommy Robinson with diplomatic pressure, (after supporting neo-Nazis at home) why, in a logical world, would US Leftists choose to thrown their lot in with the US Republican Party which is directly connected to the violent far-right? Is this the 'new' American Left? And how will Progressives and authentic Democratic Socialists deal with this while working to build a functional political party in the United States under Democratic Fascism? EXTRAS: The usual mix of politically progressive PSAs; anti-commercial quirks; political sounds and archived news items; a brief corporate news clip with the Rev. William Barber, including illuminating commentary from independent broadcasters Benjamin Dixon, Joe Rogan and Mike Malloy. All this and much more on, 4WR. Coronavirus: Why Pakistan's doctors are so angry
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Quetta has been a focal point for doctors’ protests
It was supposed to be just a picture of Pakistan’s president taking precautions during an official meeting.
But instead the image of President Dr Arif Alvi wearing the high-end N-95 medical mask – tweeted out on social media – has further inflamed tensions between Pakistan’s government and those on the front line of the fight against coronavirus.
The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) noted that while “politicians and bureaucrats are often seen wearing N-95 masks during meetings and visits… health professionals are facing a dire shortage of (these masks) and PPE (personal protective equipment)”.
Indeed, while many countries around the world regularly take to the streets to applaud their health workers during the crisis, doctors in one city – where almost 25 medical officials have already tested positive – were beaten by the police, for daring to protest over the lack of PPE.
Dr Alvi has since explained that he was given this mask in China during a recent visit and had been re-using it until its straps broke. He is now using a common face mask.
But doctors are still not happy.
PPE shortages have been in the headlines ever since the coronavirus pandemic struck early last month, mainly because it was an unprecedented situation and the magnitude of demand could not have been foreseen.
For the 200,000 or so practising doctors in Pakistan, the outbreak came just six months after they were stunned by a controversial government decision to close the country’s top health professionals’ regulatory body, the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC).
That decision left 15,000 fresh medical graduates without certification, while around 30,000 doctors still await their routine five-year registration renewal which is necessary for them to continue to practise medicine in Pakistan and abroad, a source in the PMDC said.
The near absence of protective gear triggered unrest among this already strained community, with doctors all over the country resorting to brief protests and strikes.
Tumblr media
There were clashes between police and doctors in Quetta
But nowhere were these protests as violent as in Quetta – and there are some good reasons for this.
Balochistan province is already under-resourced, with only two tertiary-care hospitals, both in Quetta, the capital. The region has often been politcally neglected. A low-intensity separatist insurgency has been going on for two decades.
The province was also the first recipient of coronavirus, which arrived with the thousands of pilgrims who crossed over from Iran during February and March.
Soon after the virus was detected, the government set up a quarantine camp at the Taftan crossing, but the arrangement was “grossly inadequate and unprofessional”, says Dr Yasir Khan, president of the Balochistan chapter of the Young Doctors’ Association (YDA).
“People were crowded together in tents so that those who had no infection also got infected,” he says.
Concerns were further raised when 40 out of the 96 people who tested positive in Quetta some two weeks ago were found to have no travel history, indicating community transmission.
As doctors demanded protection, supplies were arranged by the federal government, and the hospitals were made to sign receipts for N-95 masks.
But they turned out to be K-95 masks, mostly used by barbers and beauticians in haircutting salons, Dr Shah says.
At least 17 doctors and five paramedics in Quetta have so far tested positive for Covid-19. Even more worryingly, none of Quetta’s infected health workers were involved in directly handling coronavirus patients, Dr Khan said.
It is not the only affected province: according to the YDA, 16 medics are infected in KP, and there are reports that two doctors have died in Gilgit-Baltistan region and Karachi. The federal health ministry was repeatedly approached by the BBC to confirm country-wide infections among health professionals, but it did not respond.
By Wednesday, tensions had reached boiling point. Hundreds of doctors and paramedics went on strike, gathering at Quetta’s Civil Hospital, from where they started a protest march towards the chief minister’s residence.
Police stopped them halfway to the venue, and when they tried to break through the cordon, they were pounced upon and beaten with sticks and fists.
Many were injured, and more than two dozen were arrested.
They have since been released and have decided to call off their strike. But their protest continues as PPE supplies, which the government claims to have dispatched, have yet to reach them.

Gulf shares down despite stimulus packages
DUBAI: Gulf shares dropped Sunday amid unprecedented shutdowns to ward off the spread of coronavirus, despite tens of billions of dollars in stimulus packages announced by oil-rich governments.
The Saudi Tadawul market, the region’s largest, dropped 1.1 percent despite the kingdom announcing a $13.3 billion stimulus package to help the national economy cope with the effects of the virus and a low oil price.
The market was also impacted by a 20.6 percent dive in 2019 net profit of energy giant Saudi Aramco whose shares ended down 1.0 percent.
UAE’s bourses in Dubai and Abu Dhabi ignored a $27.2 billion stimulus package announced by the central bank, mainly directed at banks which were asked to delay debt payments of customers for up to six months.
Dubai shares dipped 3.4 percent, sliding below the 2,000-point mark for the first time since 2013, and the Abu Dhabi stock market ended the day down 1.9 percent.
Boursa Kuwait was the biggest loser with the Premier Index sliding 6.5 percent and the All-Shares Index shedding 5.5 percent as the country announced stringent virus containment measures.
Kuwaiti authorities ordered the closure of shopping malls, beauty salons and barber shops, days after halting commercial flights, banning the entry of foreigners and giving employees a two-week public leave.
Saudi Arabia also halted all commercial flights while UAE closed all entertainment facilities, stopped new visas to foreigners, banned flights to several countries and asked elderly employees to work from home.
Bahrain Boursa was down 1.5 percent while the markets of Qatar and Oman bucked the trend, rising 1.0 percent and 0.4 percent respectively.
Last week, the seven bourses slumped to multi-year lows as the coronavirus hit the oil market hard and oil producers waged a price war that sent prices crashing.
The six nations — Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and UAE — have reported over 800 cases of coronavirus, most of them returnees from Iran, but no deaths so far.

Juneteenth takes on new meaning amid push for racial justice (AP) Protesters marched over the Brooklyn Bridge, chanted “We want justice now!” near St. Louis’ Gateway Arch, stopped work at West Coast ports and paused for a moment of silence at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington, as Americans marked Juneteenth with new urgency Friday amid a nationwide push for racial justice. The holiday, which commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, is usually celebrated with parades and festivals but became a day of protest this year in the wake of demonstrations set off by George Floyd’s killing at the hands of Minneapolis police. In addition to traditional cookouts and readings of the Emancipation Proclamation—the Civil War-era order that declared all enslaved people free in Confederate territory—Americans of all backgrounds were marching, holding sit-ins or taking part in car caravan protests. Thousands gathered at a religious rally in Atlanta. Hundreds marched from St. Louis’ Old Courthouse, where the Dred Scott case partially played out, a pivotal one that denied citizenship to African Americans but galvanized the anti-slavery movement. Protesters and revelers held signs in Dallas, danced to a marching band in Chicago and registered people to vote in Detroit.
Law enforcement families face harassment, vandalism, and threats at home (Washington Examiner) Law enforcement officers say they and their families face harassment and bullying by strangers and neighbors as a result of a nationwide crackdown on law enforcement following protests around the death of George Floyd. One former Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, faces a charge of second-degree murder over the 46-year-old black man’s death. The episode triggered nationwide protests over police practices and some violence and looting. At the same time, police officers around the nation, facing scrutiny by local, state, and federal officials, say morale is down in local departments. Budgets have been cut, and overtime pay for shifts during protests has been slashed. And the homes of police officers have been vandalized while anti-law enforcement activists have watched them from outside. Paul Chabot, a retired deputy sheriff reserve out of San Bernardino County, California, who runs a website that helps officers relocate to police friendly municipalities, told the Washington Examiner that officers and their wives who reach out to him reveal their children are targeted as well. “It’s not the same like it was even just two weeks ago, three weeks ago, just because they’re a law enforcement family now. Their kids are being targeted by people in the neighborhood.”
The battle over masks in a pandemic: An all-American story (Washington Post) In this sprawling, heterogeneous country, the pandemic has become yet another thing on which Americans are divided. Mask-wearing for some people is an identifier of broader beliefs and political leanings. Like so many issues rooted in science and medicine, the pandemic is now fully entangled with ideological tribalism. This has played out before: helmets for motorcyclists, seat belts in cars, smoking bans in restaurants. All of those measures provoked battles over personal liberty. Now it’s masks and the coronavirus, with face coverings emerging as an emblem for what cleaves the nation. A flurry of recent studies supports wearing cloth face coverings as a means to limit transmission of the novel coronavirus, which causes the illness covid-19. To many people, masks represent adherence to civic duty and a willingness to make individual sacrifices for the greater good of public health. To others, masks symbolize government overreach and a violation of personal liberty.
U.S. Watched George Floyd Protests in 15 Cities Using Aerial Surveillance (NYT) The Department of Homeland Security deployed helicopters, airplanes and drones over 15 cities where demonstrators gathered to protest the death of George Floyd, logging at least 270 hours of surveillance, far more than previously revealed, according to Customs and Border Protection data. The department’s dispatching of unmanned aircraft over protests in Minneapolis last month sparked a congressional inquiry and widespread accusations that the federal agency had infringed on the privacy rights of demonstrators. But that was just one piece of a nationwide operation that deployed resources usually used to patrol the U.S. border for smugglers and illegal crossings. Aircraft filmed demonstrations in Dayton, Ohio; New York City; Buffalo and Philadelphia, among other cities, sending video footage in real time to control centers managed by Air and Marine Operations, a branch of Customs and Border Protection. The footage was then fed into a digital network managed by the Homeland Security Department, called “Big Pipe,” which can be accessed by other federal agencies and local police departments for use in future investigations, according to senior officials with Air and Marine Operations.
Barber offers hope in Peruvian barrios devastated by virus (AP) Once a week, barber Josué Yacahuanca makes his way up the dusty hills of Peru’s capital, heading into its poorest neighborhoods carrying a treasured golden briefcase that holds his life’s passion—five clipper blades, 20 combs, four scissors and a bottle with alcohol. Yacahuanca seeks out clients devastated by a coronavirus lockdown that has gone on for nearly 100 days in an attempt to stem the wave of new infections. He does it for free. “I want them to look in the mirror and see a bit of hope,” said Yacahuanca, who though just 21 years old is a veteran barber, having started cutting hair at age 13. Yacahuanca had a rocky start in life himself. Abandoned by his mother, he was raised by his godmother, Gloria Alvarez. Despite obstacles, he discovered a business savvy at a young age. He hustled at odd jobs, selling sweets, cleaning houses, working in outdoor markets and at a bus station.
Brazil tops 1 million cases as coronavirus spreads inland (AP) Brazil’s government confirmed on Friday that the country has risen above 1 million confirmed coronavirus cases, second only to the United States. Official data show a downward trend of the virus in Brazil’s north, including the hard-hit region of the Amazon, a plateau in cases and deaths in the countries’ biggest cities near the Atlantic coast, but a rising curve in the south. In the Brazilian countryside, which is much less prepared to handle a crisis, the pandemic is clearly growing. Many smaller cities have weaker health care systems and basic sanitation that’s insufficient to prevent contagion.
European powers refuse to back U.S. call for escalating Iran sanctions (Washington Post) France, Germany and Britain said they will not support reimposing sanctions on Iran if a U.N. arms embargo is not extended, but they urged Tehran to allow inspectors into sites where nuclear material may be stockpiled.
China unveils details of national security law for Hong Kong amid backlash (Reuters) Beijing unveiled details of its new national security law for Hong Kong on Saturday, paving the way for the most profound change to the city’s way of life since it returned to Chinese rule in 1997. The much-anticipated legislation, which has provoked deep concerns in Washington and Europe, includes a national security office for Hong Kong to collect intelligence and handle crimes against national security, the official Xinhua news agency reported. It said Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam could also appoint specific judges to hear national security cases, a move likely to unnerve some investors, diplomats and business leaders in the global financial hub. China says the draft law is aimed at tackling separatist activity, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces, but critics fear it will crush wide-ranging freedoms that are seen as key to Hong Kong’s status as a global financial centre.
Egyptian president says Libyan city Sirte a ‘red line’ (AP) Egypt’s president Saturday warned that an attempt by Turkey-backed forces in Libya to attack the strategic city of Sirte would cross a “red line” and trigger a direct Egyptian military intervention into the conflict. Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, in televised comments, said Egypt could intervene in neighboring Libya with the intention of protecting its western border with the oil-rich country, and to bring stability, including establishing conditions for a cease-fire, to Libya. El-Sissi warned that any attack on Sirte or the inland Jufra air base by forces loyal to the U.N.-supported but weak government in Tripoli would amount to crossing a “red line.” “Let’s stop at this (current) front line and start negotiations to reach a political solution to the Libyan crisis,” he said.
Ethiopia to fill disputed dam, deal or no deal (AP) It’s a clash over water usage that Egypt calls an existential threat and Ethiopia calls a lifeline for millions out of poverty. Just weeks remain before the filling of Africa’s most powerful hydroelectric dam might begin, and tense talks between the countries on its operation have yet to reach a deal. In an interview with The Associated Press, Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedu Andargachew on Friday declared that his country will go ahead and start filling the $4.6 billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam next month, even without an agreement. “For us it is not mandatory to reach an agreement before starting filling the dam, hence we will commence the filling process in the coming rainy season,” he said. “We are working hard to reach a deal, but still we will go ahead with our schedule whatever the outcome is. If we have to wait for others’ blessing, then the dam may remain idle for years, which we won’t allow to happen,” he said. He added that “we want to make it clear that Ethiopia will not beg Egypt and Sudan to use its own water resource for its development,” pointing out that Ethiopia is paying for the dam’s construction itself. He spoke after the latest round of talks with Egypt and Sudan on the dam, the first since discussions broke down in February, failed to reach agreement.
Congo president’s chief of staff guilty in corruption trial (AP) A court in Congo on Saturday sentenced the president’s chief of staff, Vital Kamerhe, to 20 years of forced labor after he was found guilty of corruption and embezzlement of more than $50 million. His lawyers said they would appeal. Kamerhe, 61, has called the trial a political attack on himself and President Felix Tshisekedi, who has not commented on the case. The charges stem from what the court said was “unequivocal” participation in the embezzlement of money from projects undertaken by the president during his first 100 days in office last year.

Proud Boys and Oath Keepers on Life Support?
Proud Boy leader Enrico Tarrio isn't very proud any more, as he's been on the lam for nearly 5 months
Charges after US Capitol insurrection roil far-right groups
Former President Donald Trump’s lies about a stolen 2020 election united right-wing supporters, conspiracy theorists and militants on Jan. 6, but the aftermath of the insurrection is roiling two of the most prominent far-right extremist groups at the U.S. Capitol that day.
More than three dozen members and associates across both the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers have been charged with crimes. Some local chapters cut ties with national leadership in the weeks after the deadly siege. The Proud Boys’ chairman called for a pause in the rallies that often have led to clashes with anti-fascist activists. And one Oath Keeper has agreed to cooperate against others charged in the riot.
Some extremism experts see parallels between the fallout from the Capitol riot and the schisms that divided far-right figures and groups after their violent clashes with counter-protesters at the “Unite the Right” white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August 2017. The white supremacist “alt-right” movement fractured and ultimately faded from public view after the violence erupted that weekend.

It's time to OBLITERATE them. Bust 'em up. Break them into small bits and throw all the insurrectionists in prison.
Too much to ask?
Iran's Largest Navy Ship Sinks In The Gulf Of Oman After Catching Fire
Iran's largest navy vessel caught fire in the Gulf of Oman on Wednesday and sank, according to the Tasnim News Agency.
A fire broke out on the IS Kharg while the ship was near Iran's port of Jask, southeast of Tehran, according to the Iranian navy. All crew members were able to flee the burning ship and were transferred to safety on the coast. The Kharg — sometimes spelled “Khark” — was one of navy's few ships capable of replenishing other ships at sea.
Military and civilian responders tried for 20 hours to extinguish the fire that gradually spread throughout the vessel, reported the Tasnim News Agency. Photos and videos shared online show the entire ship out at sea engulfed in thick, black smoke.

Yesterday, I reported that two Iranian warships were sailing to Venezuela as an open threat to the United States. How's that lookin' today?
Largest meat producer getting back online after cyberattack
The world’s largest meat processing company is getting back online after production around the world was disrupted by a cyberattack just weeks after a similar incident shut down a U.S. oil pipeline.
Brazil’s JBS SA said late Tuesday that it had made “significant progress” in dealing with the cyberattack and expected the “vast majority” of its plants to be operating on Wednesday.
“Our systems are coming back online and we are not sparing any resources to fight this threat,” Andre Nogueira, CEO of JBS USA, said in a statement.
Earlier, the White House said JBS had notified the U.S. of a ransom demand from a criminal organization likely based in Russia. White House principal deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the White House and the Department of Agriculture have been in touch with the company several times this week.
JBS is the second-largest producer of beef, pork and chicken in the U.S. If it were to shut down for even one day, the U.S. would lose almost a quarter of its beef-processing capacity, or the equivalent of 20,000 beef cows, according to Trey Malone, an assistant professor of agriculture at Michigan State University.

This may be turning into a trend. Remember the Colonial Pipeline hack back near the beginning of May? I bet there have been dozens more that have not yet been reported.
This is a serious problem.
Owner of Maywood barbershop charged with killing customer who refused to pay
The owner of a suburban barbershop was ordered held in lieu of $250,000 bail Sunday after he allegedly shot and killed a customer who refused to pay.
Deshon Mcadory, 40, of Lombard, was charged with first-degree murder in last Thursday’s shooting at the Studio 914 barbershop, 914 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting.
That day, 31-year-old Christian McDougald refused to pay for a haircut and began arguing with the barbers at the shop, Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Kevin Meehan said. After the dispute moved outside, everyone left except for McDougald and Mcadory.
That’s when Mcadory allegedly shot McDougald once in the chest when he followed the shop owner to its back door, Meehan said. Police previously reported that McDougald was discovered by responding officers and taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he was pronounced dead.

Danish journalist has sex during interview for segment on swingers club
One radio reporter went all the way to get a scoop on a swingers club near Copenhagen when she had sex with a man she was interviewing.
Louise Fischer, 26, can be heard moaning during the on-the-record intercourse, part of a two-minute segment that aired on Radio 4 in Denmark.
“I don’t have a boyfriend, that definitely made it a lot easier,” Fischer told the German publication Bild, according to a translation by the Daily Mail.
“My mother just thinks it’s funny and laughs, my father thought it was really cool.”
The X-rated segment focused on the reopening of a swingers club named Swingland in Ishoj after the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions — and Fischer discussed the reactions to her unorthodox interview style.

Coronavirus lockdown: Pak govt to negotiate with religious leaders over closure of mosques

Coronavirus lockdown: Pak govt to negotiate with religious leaders over closure of mosques
As the Pakistan government announced extension of the imposed lockdown for another two weeks, stretching the restrictions till April 30, religious leadership has come out again demanding opening of mosques for daily prayers, Friday prayers and for Taraweeh congregations during Ramadan.
Pakistan’s National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC), during a meeting on Tuesday agreed to reach out to religious leaders and clerics to discuss the imposed restrictions including closure of mosques for prayers.
Government officials will consult religious leadership and proposed guidelines will be discussed before allowing mosques to be opened during the holy month of Ramadan.
On the other hand, prominent religious leaders have demanded the federal government to lift restrictions on congregational prayers at mosques in the country.
In a joint statement by clerics and leaders of religious parties, it has been demanded that mosques should be opened daily five times for prayers and the Friday prayers, adding that closing mosques is not practical.
“Restriction of three or five people at mosques is not proving to be practical, those who are sick, elderly should not come to mosques,” Mufti Taqi Usmani, one of the top clerics in Pakistan, said.
The clerics have maintained that all mosques will ensure compliance of safety guidelines provided by the government.
The demand comes at a time when Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan said he would meet religious scholars and discuss the restrictions imposed.
Closure of mosques has seen a widespread backlash in Pakistan with violent attacks on police including women police officers by locals reported for the second consecutive week. The backlash came after police tried to stop prayers at mosques in different parts of the country especially the port city of Karachi.
Pakistan announced extension of the lockdown till April 30 on Tuesday to contain the spread of Covid-19 and decided to outline and proposed guidelines, to be followed by mosques during Ramadan regarding Taraweeh prayers, fasting timings and distribution of good items.
Ministry of Interior, in a notification extended the closure of borders for another two weeks. As per the notification, Wagah Border will remain closed from April 16 to 29, western border with Afghanistan and Iran will remain closed till April 26 while Kartarpur Corridor will remain closed till April 24.
The domestic extension of lockdown has come with leverages being given to the section of the construction and services industry, allowing them to open their businesses and earn their livelihood following the guidelines and SOPs given to them by the government.
The construction industry barbers, mechanics, beauty salons, carpenters and other sections have been allowed to open businesses as per the new orders of the lockdown.
The NCOC prepared guidelines for opening certain industries in a stepwise manner stating that the owner of such businesses would be bound to follow the standard operating procedures (SOPs).
The Covid-19 pandemic continues to surface from all parts of the country as the country’s tally has crossed 6,000.
As per the latest tally, here are the number of cases and death recorded in Pakistan:
Total cases: 6,217 Deaths: 113 Recovered: 1,446 Punjab province: 3,016 Sindh province: 1,668 Khyber Pukhtunkhwa province: 865 Balochistan province: 248 Gilgit Baltistan (GB): 234 Kashmir: 46 Islamabad: 140

Winners of NGC Grading Contest Announced
Nine of more than 100 contestants took home prizes in the Grading Contest presented by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) at the 2020 FUN Show from Jan. 9-11, 2020.
The number of participants, 103, was 15 more than last year when the event debuted as part of the annual show in Orlando, Fla.
Contestants won prizes in three age categories. For both the Adult (26 and up) and Young Adult (18-25) categories, first prize was a $300 NGC grading credit, second prize was a $200 NGC grading credit and third prize was a $100 NGC grading credit. The Young Numismatist (13-17) category prizes were cash — $300 for first place, $200 for second place and $100 for third place. The top 10 finishers in each of the three categories also received a special NGC “Sample Slab” with a 2004 Proof silver Florida quarter. Additionally, all of the participants received a special “Sample Slab.”
The contest was to see who could most accurately grade 15 coins in 10 minutes.
In the adult category, Ron Guth and John Baumgart tied for first place, both scoring 48 of a possible 75 points.
Guth had seven of 15 exactly correct and five partially correct answers (within one or two grades). Baumgart had five of 15 correct and nine partially correct. In a very close third place in the category was Jordan Miller, who scored 47 points, with six exactly correct and nine partially correct grades.
Because of the tie, Guth and Baumgart will split the combined first- and second-place prizes, each receiving $250 in NGC grading credits.
In the Young Adult category, Jeffrey Schwartz graded five correct and six partially correct to take first place with 41 points, followed by a tie between Joshua Ramos and David Huang, who both had 37 points with identical grading results: four correct and seven partially correct. Ramos and Huang split the combined second- and third-place prizes.
The Young Numismatists category was taken by Chris Alvarez, 17, who had two correct and eight partially correct for a total of 32 points. Aaron Rosen, 14, was second with three correct and six partially correct for a total of 29 points. In third was Christopher Gatto, 13, who had four correct answers for 20 points.
The collectibles used in the contest were coins except for one medal and one token. They were a mix of countries, types, and grades and included one not-genuine and one altered coin. Contestants graded the coins, which were in NGC Holders without grades, and entered their grades on a computer provided by NGC.
A few photos of the coins used in the contest are shown below. To see all the photos, visit ngccoin.com.
1.) USA- 1880-S Morgan dollar
NGC MS-68 ★ – This coin has some extremely light abrasions in front of the face but they do not detract from the overall eye appeal of the coin. The most common answer for this coin was NGC MS-66, and the average score (out of a possible five points) was 1.8.
2.) USA- 1798 Large cent
NGC VG-8 – This coin has obviously seen plenty of use in commerce. It has some very light scratches and a small nick above “OF” on the reverse, but both are acceptable for the age and condition of the coin. The most common answer for this coin was NGC Details, and the average score was only 0.9 out of five.
3.) Germany- 1882 Leipzig Shooting Festival bronze medal
NGC MS-66 – This piece has stunning original chocolate-brown surfaces with minimal marks. A couple of hits on the rim and some very light cabinet friction on the high points of the devices hold this medal back from higher grades. The most common grade for this piece was right on the mark at MS-66. This is reflected in a higher average score of 2.1 out of five.
4.) USA- 1854 Arrows half dime
5.) Iran- 1350/1971 Iran 500 rials
NGC PF-68 Ultra Cameo – This coin is interesting and seemed to confuse some people because the Griffin design looks Mint State, while the opposite side looks Proof. There are essentially no issues with the Griffin side, but the mirrored side has a long planchet line as well as some light hairlines that hold it back from even PF-69 Ultra Cameo. Still, this was the most modern and easiest coin to grade in this contest, with NGC PF-69 Ultra Cameo being the most common grade, and the average score was 2.6 out of five.
6.) USA- New York Broas Pie Baker Civil War token
7.) USA- 1925-S California half dollar (Not Genuine)
8.) USA- 1788 No Period Massachusetts cent
9.) India- 1943 2 annas- Double Struck, 2nd strike 75 percent off center
10.) USA- 1893 Isabella quarter
11.) USA- 1875 Seated Liberty quarter
12.) USA- 1889 CC Morgan dollar (Not Genuine or Altered)
13.) South Africa- 1961 10 cents
14.) USA- 1902 Barber dime
15.) USA – 1885 CC Morgan dollar
