The Case of the Rose Tattoo
If you fancy a oozing-with-love-for-the-stories Sherlock Holmes point and click adventure and you don't want to wait a year or more for me to complete the Beekeeper's Picnic, might I suggest 30 year old obscure classic The Rose Tattoo?
Tumblr media
I spent this evening playing around in this game and I'm in love, I think it's instantly become my favourite Sherlock Holmes game.
I've always thought that if I was writing a proper Sherlock Holmes mystery game, I would find some way for Holmes to be indisposed so that the player could play Watson acting in his stead, at least for part of the game. I feel like playing as Watson is so much more satisfying - he's able to be fallible, and we can join him in wanting to impress Holmes.
This game comes up with the BEST reason for Holmes to be out of action because it also sets the stakes very high - the Diogenes Club has gone up in flames and Mycroft is on death's door. Holmes immediately locks himself up in his bedroom in terrible grief, and it's up to Watson (and the player!) to pull him out of it by beginning to piece together what has actually happened.
Tumblr media
The game uses actual actors in front of green screens for all the characters, which looks a little odd sometimes but it does mean they are expressive and grounded.
The voice acting generally seems good, although sometimes I think the quality of the dialogue surpases it. There is lovely a moment where Holmes laments that freak accidents seem awfully unreal until one happens to someone you know. His distress is palpable in his words, but not quite carried through to his voice.
The dialogue and expository text is aboslutely steller, though, so having voice acting to match is a tall order. It often has a very very dry sense of humour, and nails the 1890s parlance.
Also honestly I think I just love the Mycroft whump and Holmes being all 3 Garridebs about it. It's so personal!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The caveat is that this is a game from the era when you were expected to sit down with a notebook, with no objectives or tutorials or prompts. It also seems to rely on you spotting very tiny details and doing a bit of pixel-hunting. I have a feeling that completing it would take a long time, and a lot of brain-power!
You can download it from Archive.org, and I recommend playing it with the ScummVM emulator.

i'm sorry but idk what orpheus and eurydice are could you explain please? 🥺👉👈
oh, of course!
Orpheus and Eurydice are a Greek myth, though they're canonized in literature in several plays/novels/accounts by Greek and Latin writers, and modern ones. My favorite is Virgil's Georgics Book IV, which has a poem about them and a beekeeper (highly, highly recommend reading it, in this one the beekeeper's bees have died because of a curse to punish him as he wrongly killed Eurydice, which is just one of the scenarios for her death that we see in mythology! the translation i've linked by A. S. Kline has some absolutely gorgeous prose).
but they're one of my favorite mythological couples ever because they have a beautifully, tragically poetic story: Orpheus is a musician, and Eurydice is his wife. The myths vary on exactly how, but Eurydice dies one day and Orpheus, fiercely grieving and unable to live without her, endeavors to go to the Underworld and bring her back (a feat no mortal has ever achieved). He plays music lamenting his loss as he descends into the Underworld, and it's so beautiful and moving that none of the monsters attack him, and even Persephone, the goddess of the dead, is moved by his love. Therefore, Hades and Persephone say that he can take Eurydice back with him to the living world--if he leads her up without ever once looking back to make sure she's really there.
Orpheus gets almost all the way to the top, the entire time nagged by the fear that she's not actually there, that the footsteps he hears are his imagination, and when he's almost at the entrance--he can see the sunlight--the temptation is too much and he looks back. Just in time to see her standing there, but he looked back and so she's lost to the Underworld once more. And then, in true mythological fashion, he cries himself to death by a river/lake (the details are a bit vague in my memory here 😆).
the last bit of the story (the ascent back to the world of the living with Eurydice behind him, and particularly the last look back) is referenced many times in literature throughout the ages bc it's such a powerful scene, and there's a lot of different interpretations on why he looked back--because he couldn't bear not to know if he had her a second longer, because he loved her too much, because he'd already passed into the real world and she hadn't, but he didn't realize and so it was a mistake etc etc.
they're deeply tragic, but one of my absolute favs because their entire story is shaped by the depth of their love for each other. There's a quote from a play about them by Sarah Ruhl that I adore bc several interpretations show Eurydice's forgiveness amongst her grief when she's taken back, because she knows he only turned bc he loved her.
Orpheus: How will you remember?
Eurydice: That I love you?
Orpheus: Yes.
Eurydice: That’s easy. I can’t help it.
Eurydice - Sarah Ruhl
that was probably a LOT longer of an explanation than you wanted lolll 😂
i love them and they've got some major jily vibes--tell me James Potter wouldn't go the underworld for his wife, and his greatest flaw (and ultimate downfall) wouldn't be his love for her--and one day I'll write an actual, takes-place-in-ancient-greece, sticks-to-the-myth retelling of them as Orpheus and Eurydice! (gotta put my classics education to use somewhere 😌)
dear lily evans...i love you is canon compliant 7th year (ish. it’s a no voldemort au!) so it doesn’t have any of the actual storyline of the myth, but the vibes and emotion of Orpheus and Eurydice are definitely there! ❤️🥰

Finding the Tune
This soundtrack helped me come to terms with this manga, setting the tone and enhancing the emotions conveyed by the manga panels. Finding these songs is a daunting task, though, because this particular manga’s themes make it difficult to capture all the different emotional tones.
Tumblr media
I tried to stay away from songs that had been composed for movies or TV shows. The only time I came close to that line was when I used Alabama 3′s Woke Up This Morning for chapter 93. It's so associated with ‘The Sopranos’ that it’s easy to forget this song was released in 1997.
Despite these challenges, I always found tunes that fit the tone, but were composed for movies or tv shows... Or documentaries, like Poor Wayfarin' Stranger by Bobby Horton. That has always been the perfect theme for Seiichi to me. That tune says everything about that kid. Eventually, I was able to articulate why Waltz #2 (XO) by Elliott Smith could make a great theme for Seiichi, even if I had considered that song for Seiko at some point.
This song and every variant of it belong in the 2003 FMA soundtrack, but it fits Seiko to a ‘T’. But actually, Keaton Henson’s Beekeeper is a better song to use considering its lyrics. It really feels like it was written with Seiko in mind.
Whenever Fukiishi shows up, I think of Rose by Anna Tsuchiya, but, of course, that song belongs in NANA.
Many chapters of the manga are still without a tune… Mostly, for chapters 32 and 33, I can't find a better tune than Norihito Sumitomo’s Heroic Battle.
Other chapters, like 44, 45, 46 and 47 have poor substitute songs for the ones I really wanted to use; Akira Senju’s Envy Revealed, and Nino Rota’s Theme Song for The Godfather OST for chapters 48 and 49.
Not all changes are sad, though: some songs got switched for better songs. Of Monsters And Men's King And Lionheart was my go-to theme for Seiichi and Fukiishi, but when I heard the lyrics for The Best Is Yet To Come by Sheppard, I was sold.
Ben Rector’s Forever Like That was the tune for chapter 82, but that is a happy-go-lucky love song, and a weird love story needs a weird love song, and the weirdest love song I know is Pigs On The Wing by Pink Floyd (the version with the Snowy White guitar solo).
I still considered Ben Rector’s tune for the last pages of chapter 83, but Bob Dylan’s Make You Feel My Love prevailed. Bob’s song is pretty sweet, but his voice makes it more grounded, better suited, in my opinion. If that had been the end of the manga, that would’ve been a great song to end it with, but, of course, Bob Dylan is not short on break-up songs, and that’s why Buckets of Rain ended up in chapters 117 and 118, instead of Hasegawa Tomoki’s Ren to Wakare. If Shūzō Oshimi suddenly decides to bring Fukiishi back into the story, I have a song set aside for that 1 in a million odds scenario, just not a Bob Dylan song.
Flash forward to chapter 141 to 144, I’m still not sure that Johnny Cash’s Hurt is a more effective tune then Akira Senju’s Violoncello's Lament... but time will tell, I guess. Meanwhile, the search continues...

Farmers, villagers lament as elephants, gorillas invade farmlands in C’River
Tumblr media
Farmers and other villagers in communities in Boki and Akamkpa local government areas of Cross River State have lamented the continual stray of gorillas and elephants from their protected habitats into their farmlands and settlements. Speaking at a one-day workshop sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development, USAID, and the World Conservation Society in Calabar, the state capital, they complained that the animals devastate farmlands, impacting harvest and investments. They warned that they might kill the animals if the situation remains unabated. According to them, continual straying or escaping these animals into human settlements poses a big risk to inhabitants, especially older women and children. One of the community leaders, Elder Obeten Erasmus, said, “These animals may at times be friendly, but they pose big risks to human beings as they continue to escape from their confines. “They have destroyed some of our farmlands, leaving our entire efforts in ruins. “If not checked, the people could take revenge on them.” Another recalled that before now, it was a regular case where a gorilla would leave its habitat in the Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary in Boki and saunter into the nearby community in search of food and could not trace its way back. Addressing the issue, a senior staff at the World Conservation Society, WCS, Dr Inaoyom Imong, passionately appealed to the communities that suffer the devastation of their farmlands not to kill the animals. He said the elephants and gorillas were facing extinction going by their few numbers. He said they would not be happy to see the animals killed as they are under protection. He said it is the government that ought to ensure that the National Parks in the state, which are gazetted as protected areas, are held as such. “But we find that human activities like traversing these territories for economic trees and fruits, such asbush mangoes, Afang leaves, cocoa, have left these places porous, which reasons the animals stray out,” he said. To minimise incessant infiltration into the national parks, he said they are providing alternative economic means, training, empowerment for forest communities, and support for beekeeping and livestock as ways to dissuade them. He pointed out that conservation requires communities to have a change of behaviour and attitude towards nature. Read the full article

At forty, I thought I knew what was what, and moved to the mountains, picked up prime farmland short of a hectare riddled with clouds. Spring is the time to sow, the soil bustling, with people plotting life and death — the fate of a fennel seed is in a flick of my hand.
The baby chestnut tree was brought home from the market, then the soft rain, beseeched by me, came like a sigh at night. Hundreds of flowers teeming, leaving me behind, useless even if putting on rouge. The mountain felt like a middle-aged woman blessed with child.
Nature went about its business day and night: the ways of the birds and the bees all enter the beekeeper’s account, like frost on the roof. My romantic ambitions faded by the end of summer, some irrational and uncalled-for schemes.
The mountain accommodates every one under the gaze of the stars, even a small snake, whom I stumbled across in the ravine, and a myriad of plants and trees named by men, regardless. Time flows by in the mountains, absent of memories, undisturbed by the past.
Besides those resting in graves, myself wandering about, those recessing at the potato patch, and the secretive behind the bamboo groves, there was hardly a soul around. I began to get used to how trees think and how wild grasses grow, and tread lightly lest to startle the turtledoves.
As to the land, apart from praise, any other words is cheap talk. Winter is for chopping wood and lighting fires, but to act like a thinker is absurd. Compared to trees, mountains, and rocks, my composition is overly complicated: family name, age, acquired skills, origin unknown, and whereto is anyone’s guess.
The full moon only shines on top of our Eastern Mountain. The full moon only rests on the trees on Eastern Mountain, brightening the graves, and brightening up the ashen eaves of a few houses, a weary scene from the never-ending years, a wordless lament.
– Bai Ma, On Top of Eastern Mountain (translated by Duck Yard Lyricists)

*pokes you with a stick*
on a scale from 1 to yes how ok with it would u be if I asked you to tell me some Jekyll x basically-anyone-at-all/your otp for the moment hcs for some extra serotonin and dopamine I desperately lack?
I turned off my brain awhile ago and have been on and off drawing the lodgers with those egg tear eyes for the past several hours, which has only served to make me less capable of thought. But I'm gonna say yes anyway <3

Jekyll x Doddle >:3 , Peppermint Sweets?
Quick warning, I constantly misspell his name as doodle
Doddle got a minor crush after seeing Jekyll would walk by his kitchen and eye the desserts but never actually take or ask for any. So naturally one day when Jekyll walked by Doddle offered him like some peppermint bark or something (because Jekyll always smells like peppermint so doddle assumes he likes it)
He'd do this like once a week, changing up the dessert he offered Jekyll most of the time. and the way Jekyll's face would light up every single time just made him a bit more smitten
Jekyll has a massive sweet tooth. But usually only eats such things when they're gifted or offered to him, so he's quite happy to find that Doddle is now offering him stuff every now and then
The desserts offered to Jekyll start getting a bit more extravagant, with a few more lil heart shape decorations, which gets Jekyll absolutely flustered
And now, is a perfect time to add in a headcanon I've had for a long time but nearly forgot about, Jekyll owns bees, who make simply delightful honey. Jekyll hears Doddle lament one day about how he couldn't find nearly enough honey in stores this week for his latest experiment. And J immediately offers to give Doddle some honey from his bees at home
They go to Jekyll's house together with a cart to go get some jars, as apparently Jekyll just has a ton of jars of honey at home that he doesn't know what to do with, he really just got bees because he likes them and they help his garden
Doddle is in awe of Jekyll's garden and lab and cant stop complimenting Jekyll's beekeeping skills and the honey they make. All of this causing a very heavily blushing Jekyll
This goes on with Jekyll now always giving Doddle honey for his experiments, and they're just. Absolutely pining over each other, using every excuse they can think of to be a room with each other. They're both painfully oblivious to the fact that they even have a crush and the the feelings are mutual
When together they adopt a deaf white cat named Sprinkles who screams very loudly and tries to eat flour
That's about all I can think of! No actual "in a relationship" rambles for this ramble though, I never got that far. But if you're not already asleep you can have fun daydreaming about them
Edit: ooh wait, or Jekyll's name in this ship could be something honey related. Honey Cake? Feel free to send suggestions <3
quick question, do we know anything about doddle. like is there any info other than his science. i do not know

I love the weird but cool thing that happens where when you make a playlist for a character most of the album cover art is the same color as their aura/vibe. Like most of the covers for the albums all of the songs I picked for Bones are blue/white dominant. This is also kinda has a practical explanation with how color psychology plays a MASSIVE role in graphic design especially for music. Bones being melancholic in disposition, having a very sterile profession and strong moral values makes the blue/white thing really easy to spot. But I also think it’s kinda neat and noteworthy that the other most common color in the album art from his playlist is orange, and I think that’s because he’s a loud, antagonistic little spitfire lmao. Anyways, enjoy!

In a sleepy village in the middle of nowhere, an ex-royal in hiding and his former servant-turned-beekeeper share a farmhouse, brew mead, and toast the marriage of Princes Zim and Dib.
Oh, you know, just some fanfic of a fanfic, taking place within @melodyofthevoid ‘s Royalty AU but not canon to it because I Literally Did Not Ask Her and Am Posting Anyway.
I was just speculating on what we’re all speculating on. Which is, of course: What do you suppose became of Tallest Spork and Table-Headed Service Drone Bob in this universe?
