“damn, look at those waves.” jj closes one eye and outlines the crest of a wave with his arm. “you hear that? they’re callin’ your name, cupcake.”
“i dunno about this, jayj.” you sway nervously beside him, pushing your lips together at the sight of the monstrous waves crashing into the surf. jj simply shrugs it off, swatting his hand in the salty air.
“don’t sweat it, you’ve got the best teacher in the obx. this is nothin’.”
“okay..” you follow behind him as he starts kicking through the sand closer to the water. jj had been asking you to try surfing for a while now. it just never seemed like your thing, despite growing up a block from the beach. you agreed to let him teach you, very optimistic about your ability to learn in the moment, but now that you’re here, you’re having some doubts.
jj walks to the edge of the water, then beckons you over with a roll of his wrist. “you see that?” he points to the waves, looking off in a daydream of you in your cute bikini gliding through the water. you gulp. “before y’know it, you’re gonna be cuttin’ through ‘em, babe. seriously.” he turns to look at you, finally noticing your uneasy expression. “y’alright?”
“yeah! i guess i’m just a little nervous.” you bite your lip, breaking your eyes from the roaring waves to look up at jj. “i’m not really good at this kind of stuff.”
“aw, don’t worry, cupcake. we’ll go slow.” he winks, and you roll your eyes, really wanting him to take you seriously. “jus' gonna lay on the board and ride the waves in--that's it." he stresses, trying to keep things positive in hopes you won't change your mind.
you nod, mustering up some confidence to follow through. "okay, yeah. i can do that." you really want to learn, mostly wanting an excuse to spend more time with him.
“hell yeah you can. n'i got you, you'll be just fine.” he starts walking closer to the shoreline, opening his free hand for you to take. you smile, his eagerness easing your anxiety just a little, and you shuffle up beside him, slipping your hand into his.
you stop at the shoreline, the water creeping up the sand and splashing around your feet. jj kneels down, grabs the safety leash on the board, and velcros it around your ankle. once it's all secure, he pats the strap, standing up with the board still under his arm.
"you ready, mama?" jj smiles, squeezing your hand. you press your cheek into his arm, your stomach turning in anticipation.
"yeah! c'mon, before i chicken out."
he pulls you into the cold water, bringing you out to the breakers. you're in up to your thighs, jj holding the board steady as it floats in the water. he turns it, both the board and his body facing away from the forming waves. "lay on it, i got it."
you climb on top, the wax helping you keep your grip. he holds you steady over a few small waves, letting you get used to bobbing in the salty water. it's more comfortable than you expected, your arms hanging off the sides of the board. he takes one hand and presses it into the small of your back. "arch just a little more," he adjusts, and you push up a little. "there y'go. perfect."
jj looks back, some bigger waves starting to form further out. "you wanna ride one in, babe? some big ones comin’.”
you look back, the water beneath you getting more and more choppy. "sure!"
"alright, i'll let you go when it's comin' and you just paddle til it takes you in. okay?" he explains, his thumb rubbing gently on your back. "here it is, mama, get ready."
you look back, watching the wave building behind you before turning forward again just as it peaks underneath you. "aaand—go!" jj shouts, letting go of the board and jumping to bodysurf in the current. you paddle gently, barely needing to as the water pushes you back to the shoreline. you hold onto the sides, basking in the warm wind. you can only imagine how it feels standing up, how freeing it must be. you can definitely understand why he loves it so much.
jj swims back to shore before you make it there, the board's drag slowing you down. he shakes out his hair, looking out for you and clapping his hands above his head. "yeaaah! that's my girl, you got it! bring it on in, mama."
you cant help but laugh, standing up once the board hits the sand. jj walks over, nudging your arm. "what'd i say? that was awesome, babe!"
"that felt amazing.. i-i wanna go again!" you wipe your wet hair out of your face, leaning down to grab the board.
"alright, daredevil. we'll keep goin' as long as you want."

Breaking Away With The Beast of Both Worlds: The original '80s "Beauty & The Beast" TV series has been on my mind more than a bit lately. It's an election year, so a certain segment of the press is naturally drumming up a late '80s Fear City-inspired panic (the show's setting, the female lead suffering a frightful Central Park Jogger-like attack) about the lawless Big Apple to portray it as if it was "The Warriors," "The New York Ripper," or "Escape From New York." The city's had multiple cases of ill-advised and even fatal cases of subway surfing over the past two years. The Beastman Vincent, in one of the series's best conceits, would ride atop the sideway like he was bodysurfing to valiantly come to the aid of the imperiled heroine. I can see how the face of homelessness has changed on the streets due to the income gap and housing shortages, so much so that the World Below as depicted on the show -- I recall news reports back when it first aired covering the Mole People who had retreated into the city's netherworld beneath the concrete as evidence of failed big city governance -- as a subterranean haven for society's embittered and beleaguered dropouts is seeming evermore plausible.

The Boy Who Wished For A Miracle
Michael Darling conspires with the forces of the universe to do the impossible: hang out with his older brother
***
Oi, a miracle had happened– the Darling Three were together!
Right, it was just to grab tea, but Michael was delighted when John had opted to come with him and Wendy to Hatter’s. John would be off after this– his matcha in a to-go cup and then he’d be heads down, ducking his way against the chill toward the library where he spent practically every day on “revision,” which Michael knew involved a lot of staring out the window. He was positive - mega positive - that what John really needed was a day off. And as they meandered through the queue that’s exactly what he was trying to convince John of.
“I just think a change of scenery helps,” he said. “You know, dust out the ol’ brain, give it a good wack.”
“Michael, you realize I’ve other things to do besides the revision, yeah? Grading, and reading, and meetings and all that. There’s a reason I go to the library at a specific time–”
“I think someone smart said that the best writing they ever did was when they weren’t writing at all!” Michael said. “Didn’t someone say that John? Wendy, didn’t someone say that?”
Wendy laughed. “Did they?”
“I think it was a famous author. I sent it to John once.”
“You’re bastardizing a Murakami quote. And that was some kind of emotional blackmail at the time.”
“Emotional blackmail!” exclaimed Michael. “We were on holiday! You wouldn’t come bodysurfing with me!”
“When was this?” Wendy asked.
“I musta been fifteen or something, we went down to Malta. I’d gone to that awfully boring big cathedral with him and he wouldn’t come down to the beach with me–”
“You are telling that story so wrong–”
“He was all, I’ve summer reading! Mate, it was a holiday!”
“I did, and I also had a headache–”
“From squinting, John. All the squinting.”
“We’ll have  three teas please,” said Wendy kindly to the barista. “One matcha, and two chai lattes, right, Michael?
“Right, but oh, can you put a shot of the pumpkin flavouring in one of them?” Michael leaned forward. He looked at his siblings. “It makes it taste like Christmas.”
“Whipped cream?” asked the barista
“Oh yeah, obviously! Course I’m getting whipped cream, I don’t hate myself,” said Michael.
“Whipped cream does sound nice– me too,” said Wendy.
“John, what about you? Or do you hate yourself?”
“Loaded question,” said John, then shook his head. “No whipped cream for me.”
“We can sprinkle some cinnamon and nutmeg on top,” Michael said to Wendy. They were shuffling down the line. John had his wallet out. “You should try mine, Wendy.  Ashlee loved it when I made her try it. Oi, John, I got it.”
“Mmmm so you can guilt-trip me into taking a break? Not falling for it.”
“Jesus, Wendy! You listening to him? Talk some sense into him.”
“It’d be nice to have tea together, John,” was Wendy’s answer, as she pat her brother on the arm.
“Another time. I’m beating my head against my conclusion. I’ve nearly cracked it.”
“Your head? Blimey, that can’t be good,” said Michael. “Ought to get that checked out– hey, why not today! I’ll take you to the emergency room.”
“So now you’re rooting against me?”
“No,  I’m rooting for you, Johnny. I wake up every morning and I clasp my hands together, and I pray oh please, let John be less boring today!”
Wendy laughed again. “Both of you, stop it. Here, there’s the tea. Let’s walk John to the library, won’t that be nice?”
“You really don’t have…” John said with a grimace, as Wendy roped her arm through his, so he couldn’t make a mad dash for the exit. “Diabolical,” he muttered to her, and all Wendy did was wiggle her eyebrows conspiratorially.
Hatter’s bell rang in farewell as the Darling Three turned up their coat collars. John took a first sip of his matcha and Michael prepared for Round Two, formulating a list of very good reasons why John should consider hanging out. He’d make it happen! Maybe Michael could dangle Chapter Three in front of him. Oh, or pretend to spot a bird, a very rare bird. If he thought very hard, he could pull the name of it from his memory. There had been a story he was told at bedtime, something about the bird who didn’t fly south for the winter, but stayed, so it might play with…
And then, that’s when Michael saw it. Not a winter bird at all, but the flicker of something just as magical.
Michael stopped in the middle of the sidewalk.
“Michael?” said Wendy.
“Snow,” said Michael. He pointed at the sky and laughed.
One flurry became two, then four, then a dozen, then ten thousand, like someone had poked a hole in the bottom of a bag of sugar. Wendy gasped and lifted her hands up to the sky. Michael stuck out his tongue. “It tastes like peppermint!” he exclaimed.
Smack! Michael shrieked as a wet, cold hand grabbed him by the back of the neck. “John!” he cried out as he danced away a few steps, then whirled on his laughing brother, who wiggled hello with very red, wet fingers.
Well, that did it then, didn’t it? Someone wasn’t going to make it to the library.
Michael scooped up some of the snow quickly accumulating on the ground. “C’mere! Wendy, you and me! We’re taking him down!”
“No fair! Oi, I’ll spill my tea!”
“Spill it then, villain!” Wendy cried.
“Prepare to beg for mercy!”
And so John dashed across the street and toward the park, his sister and brother on his heels, as a thousand snowflakes winked at the Darlings. Today, Michael’s wish had come true.

SD Zoo Wildlife Alliance Pt 2
Special Title: San Diego Zoo and Safari Parks Part 2 of 2
Today’s Special issue is on :  San Diego Zoo and Safari Parks Part 2
Today’s Mistake-Bodysurfing when the waves are too strong.
In this episode: FAQ
Destination: Part 2 of 2 San Diego Zoo and Safari Park
San Diego Zoo and Safari Parks is a conservation organization under the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and is a Step 1 or Step 2 destination.
The Wildlife Alliance is trying to create A world where all life thrives. They have two front doors. In this episode, we focus on the Safari Park, formerly known as the Wild Animal Park.
https://sandiegozoowildlifealliance.org/
https://sdzsafaripark.org/tickets
Ambassadors are all around.
Saving, protecting and preserving all around the world.
Safari Park in Escondido, CA has been my favorite animal enclosure for decades. It’s nestled in the San Pasqual Valley, north of San Diego by 30 miles and is part of the San Diego Wildlife Alliance. It’s a bit of a drive from any large commercial airport, but even if you can get here for a few hours, you will be rewarded.
Why should you go there?
Go for a change of your routine and for exploration beyond your current experience. Gain new perspectives and learn something fresh about our world that you did not already know.
What can you expect when you arrive?
Parking fee. Yes, there is a fee at this location. If you ask about the fee, they will tell you it costs a lot to run the park and feed the animals. The only way to avoid the fee is to have someone drop you off or carpool and split that fee.
You get to the entrance and find kiosks to get tickets. If you purchase your ticket online, you save the wait.
Walking around the park solo is easy to do. Get the app on your phone, so you will always be able to find your way around. If you prefer, get a paper map. There are ambassadors all over the park, wearing red shirts. Ask any one of them any relative question and you will be glad you did.
There is a tram that takes you to several places that are unwalkable. It’s comfortable and free. You can pay extra to skip the line. The park is broken out by continents, so you will find certain species in specific locations.
How much time should you spend here? A full day if you can. Take plenty of breaks and be sure to see the different parts of the park if you can, because 1800 acres is a lot of trail. Half of that is conservation trains, so off limits to walk. There are plenty of options to get around and see the full experience.
It’s full of some of the rarest of species. for example, the only place outside of Australia where you will see platypuses is here. There are two here, and you can observe them in a cave-like experience, while they swim around.
The Wildlife alliance is laser focused on conservation, so they are trying to maintain high standards of sustainability as well as protecting the environment.
Kangaroos, and koalas are some of the best exhibits, so head to the Aussie side of the park, where you may find smaller crowds even on a busy day.
Me: Someday, I’d like to be a volunteer ambassador for the Safari park and join the hundreds of retirees who help out with hospitality and education. I have two friends here doing this now. They pick their available days and are regulars. I’m a current member and visit several times a year. It never gets boring.
Do: The elephants are easy to spot, and you see them pretty close up! This is one of my favorite exhibits.
Don’t: forget to layer for the changing weather conditions, for it is usually hotter or colder than you’d expect in this San Pasqual Valley.
Today’s Mistake: Bodysurfing when the waves are too strong.
I was in the Pacific Ocean yesterday and got excited because it was such a beautiful day. However, my readiness was tempered by a huge wave that I did not anticipate, knocking me off my feet and swirling around in the surf with my boogie board pulled from me. My bathing suit was stretched out, sand all inside it and my ears felt like they got a sinus cleanout. That shook me hard. Don’t swim without the lifeguard and watch of big waves.
Today’s Travel Advice: Check out the Eastern Sierra’s for colors in the fall.
The forests of maple stress look like lava flows. The aspens look like orange cotton candy. The snow capped peaks look like the perfect contrast to the bright colors with the black and white tundra in the distance.
Connect to like minded women and get inspiration from them through your journeys, big and small. Discover the many talents of others by asking meaningful questions about philosophy and not just the weather.
I want to bring meaning to your travels.  Send a question or travel tip to [email protected]. We can connect on my website, Facebook page, group, or Instagram. But What do you DO all Day?
Here's a typical day, roughly based on this mornings action.
up at 6:30(1st light ) ,put the water on to heat while brushing and washing. Make tea, quick shave, slurp delicious fruit drink and eat granola with fruit and yogurt. Pocket my camera, some small money just in case, smear on a layer of sunscreen, put on Tevas ( best sandals ever, a zillion footsteps and some rugged trails) and a broad brimmed hat, and off to the beach.
Surfs up and dozens of wave lovers are in the water, poised for the perfect wave. Amazing how they paddle up sheer wave faces, just making the top and avoiding the crashing 10 foot waterfall. mind you they all struggled and dove under those falls to get out, which may be why they linger, waiting for the perfect wave. I suppose it's worth it, but really, when the wave comes, they rocket down the face for 2 seconds, then get boofed into the sand. I've bodysurfed a lot, and it is a rush to be on that wave face, speeding along in a cloud of spray and foam, turning to stay in the sweet spot, and hopefully pulling back before the crest breaks and dumps you in the washing machine, tumbling and rolling in the cloud of sandy foam up the beach. The more skilled boarders catch the end of the roller and slide gracefully along the declining wave, turning back just as it breaks.
Surfers are watched with interest by boarders waiting to go in, assessing the waves, and looking for the backwash pulling out from shore in a green sandy cloud for the easy route seaward. Beach bunnys are oh so casual in their skimpy swimsuits, tanned perfectly, trim bodys poised for display, never getting wet.
There are always beach walkers, headphoned, fit bitted, some strolling, some doggedly jogging, a few on phones(?) and all in the increasingly hot sun. By 9 it's very warm, and the land breeze has yet to be replaced by the seabreeze. so it's muggy. Beach dogs wrestle coconut shells, splash in the shallows, and bark at all other dogs. Many people have several dogs, and dog walking is an early morning activity. A few are on leashes, mostly running loose, with no dog fights, but a few bristling agressive standoffs. It's crop of mixed breeds here, from yappy chihuahuas, to believe it or not a Saint Bernard.Mostly the breed varied from year to year depending on who was the big dog in the backstreets. Commonly they are lab collie crosses, with one floppy ear,and lolling tongues. When the pack of homeless dogs gets too agressive, the cops go hunting. Issues of bitten tourists or mauled pets drops off. Probably less chickens rustled too.
Off the too hot beach and up into housing on the hill, where gringo palaces, alternate with cement block shacks of the locals. Vacant lots are fewer each year, and road paving replaces the washed out sand streets. There a re always a few gringo homes empty, overgrown, seemingly abandoned. Some bodys dream met the reality of Mexico. Construction continues everywhere, teams of bucket brigaders pack hand mixed cement up to second stories to fill forms. It's an odd feature, but all new construction, cement barely dry , is followed by some poor guy with a sledge hammer pounding away holes for the forgotten wiring /plumbing/ or in one case bashing out a wall to put in a door, perhaps left out of the drawing/plan. Side streets also can be the homes of small craft shops, hole in wall cafes, or tiny tiendas, all of which wither and fail for lack of custom , being hopelessly located in no traffic zones. If I'm not passing through the mercado,it's home again up the steep hillside streets, a rest at a lookout , and back to Casa Dan for a much needed cold juice.
Most mornings include a visit with neighbours, catching up on who's coming and going, best place to shop, or travel tips. Dans is a little village, happily comprised of friendly seniors. By 11 I'm up on the terraza above room 14, with the rising sea breeze and an inviting hammock.Perfect place to do blogging, Spanish lessons, or just read a book. The only drawback is that it's directly above the restaurant, and the most appetizing aromas waft up temptingly. But resisting that, i write, email, blog and contemplate.
By noon it's back to my outdoor kitchen for quesadillas or nachos, or leftovers, certainly some fruit, and probably a fresh smoothie. I make extra and give some to the staff, who greatly appreciate the treat. They would not spend money on fruit, having enough to do to keep up on tortillas, so while I do tip, a little extra goes a long way.
Depending on the day, I'll flop in the pool, do a few laps, then hit the hammock to listen to audio books, or read thrillers, or snooze? More chatting around the pool, dinner at 5, then up to the top terrace for a convivial group watching the sun go down. As darkness falls the mosquitoes rise, and it's inside the well screened room for blasting fans and netflix. Sleep by 9, and another succesful day of doing not much at all. Yesterdays highlight was a very big black scorpion in the bathroom. Having been stung, i'm very wary, and asked the office staff for advice. Anabe tried to catch it in a container for live release, but the scorpion would not cooperate so she just wadded up some toilet paper, picked up the scorpion by it's tail, and deported it out onto the street. She was very calm about it all, having been stung a few times, and had several pictures of previous catches stored on her phone, crawling on her hands and arms. The scorpion was a large specimen, overall including the coiled tail, 4 inches overall, with long lobster like claws out front and that lashing poison tipped tail aloft Gives me the creeps, but they are rarely fatal, just extremely painful.
