I'd leave a flower to gently float away on the lake every single day
On the tenth day, the flowers start to sink as soon as you place them on the water.
The lake remembers you. If you try to swim in it, you will not drown.

The lake is afraid of water that does not belong to it. That water carries the unknown. It carries experiences and histories that the lake cannot predict or control.
For a moment, the lake doesn't seem so dark. New water dilutes it. New water adds shades to its blackness.
After all, these changes were necessary.
The lake will be grumpy for a while, but it is grateful.

By the Side of the Black Lake
I can’t remember how I found the lake, or when. But it was instantly mesmerizing.
The surface lay completely still, bordered by rocks on the east side and a glassy beach of soft sand on the west. There were no waves, no tide, I wasn’t even sure if it was water.
Just a black ink that spread out, shaped by the land, completely opaque. It didn’t feel natural, but it looked beautiful.
I could sit on the lake side for hours, just admiring it and it’s intensity. I wouldn’t dare to touch it. Things this peculiar in nature always came with some horrific price. A temperature hot enough to boil you alive, or completely melt the flesh off bones. (Like the sulphur springs in Yellowstone, except this didn’t smell of rotting eggs).
Things had been dropped into the lake before, but the surface was so dark, you would never be able to tell what happened to it. It would just disappear into the darkness. Things could float on the surface but the patterns never matched any typical current, it moved at its own leisure, as if the lake was playing with it. But just like everything else, it would eventually sink into the depths.
Sometimes things would wash up on shore, bones of birds and animals that had tried to swim. Unsettling to say the least.
Some believed the lake was cursed, but I was never one to believe in magic. Still, it was hard to shake that the lake felt- alive. It could feel happy and sad and angry, and the environment and the surface of the lake acted on these. Unpredictable as ever.
I was afraid. There were so many uncertainties visiting a lake like this. But it was practically impossible to ignore the strange comfort I got staring into the darkness, pondering its depths, and admiring its beauty.
Curiosity’s temptation always calls until it receives an answer.
I found myself visiting more and more frequently, and spending more and more time amongst the quiet solitude of the lake, although I never felt alone. It became a habit to visit the lake everyday. I’d bring a blanket and set up atop one of the rocks that presented the best view. I’d sketch, read, nap. I’d watch people come by with their own stories. They’d leave things for the lake. Throw things into the lake. Walk around the border. I’d hum and sing and whisper conversations to myself. It felt like someone was listening, and conversations with myself and some distant party became common.
I wanted to share ideas and stories and life, until speaking out loud became less to help myself understand and more for someone else to listen to.
I was always so careful to clean up after myself. Not leave anything behind. I didn’t want to upse- I didn’t want to lose something I might regret letting go of. But I guess I was distracted, lost in my head, and I forgot.
I only realized that I had when I went to visit the lake the next day. It was missing. I must’ve left it behind. I looked everywhere for it. Even places I had never actually visited by the lakeside. I searched and searched til the sun started to set.
I didn’t know what to do. Perhaps the lake had- no that’s impossible. The lake couldn’t have taken it. It’s up on the rocks. So someone else- but there was no one else around. I couldn’t have lost it.
Even if it didn’t have much monetary value, I had spent weeks by the lake side using it, and it didn’t feel right to not have it. I can’t believe I lost it, and I couldn’t help but cry at my own incompetence.
I hadn’t realized how close I’d gotten to the edge until it was too late, and one misstep caused me to fall into the lake. I only had a second to catch a breath before I was submerged into the darkness.
In moments that catch you off guard you find yourself doing things you never would’ve before. And I opened my eyes, not like it helped since I couldn’t see anything. I had no idea where I was and no sense of direction. The surface was missing, and panic began to settle deeper within me.
My mind began to focus on my breath, or the lack of breath. I hadn’t been ready to be submerged, and I could feel the choke hold my lungs had on me, begging me for more air. Air I couldn’t give it.
Was this it? Was this where I was to die. I suppose it could be worse. My flesh could be melting off my body, but the darkness was surprisingly tame. I wouldn’t say cold just as much as I wouldn’t say hot. It was- comforting. Like being held. And the darkness seemed to wrap itself around me. I couldn’t tell if it was trying to help, or trying to push me further down. But I was unwelcome either way.
I wasn’t sure how much longer I could hold my breath, but maybe there was no point holding onto something I couldn’t control. Maybe I should just-
Two massive orange- um- eyes appeared before me. One with a slash straight through. I swam backward, startled. What was this thing? Some sort of lake creature? I wasn’t even aware anything lived inside. I thought- this must be what eats the creatures that get stuck.
They got closer, and I tried moving away, but I was stuck. I couldn’t move, and the tugging and flailing of my arms was only met with resistance. The glowing eyes circled me, settling behind me and than looked up. Up! That was the surface!
I swam up as fast as I could, following the refracting orange light all the way. My lungs longed for another breath. I could feel it leaping in anticipating until finally, I breached the surface and gasped for air in a fit of coughs. Quickly, I swam toward the beach, pulling myself completely out of the lake and a little extra for good measure.
It was dark now, the final glitter of the sun settling behind the mountain. All the beauty the lake offered by day as an oddity left when given the dark abyssal nature it had by night. It looked as if nothing was there. As of the universe itself ended in this very spot.
I pulled my knees up to my chest as I tried to get myself to move. A wave brushed itself on the sand, over and over until something was left on the beach.
That was mine. What I’d been searching for! I found it or- it was returned to me. I looked out over the lake again. Quiet and still as ever.
———————-
I don’t know how comfortable @somerandomdudelmao is with fanfiction of their own persona, but the very intriguing idea of a sentient, completely black lake divined me with inspiration and I had to write out an idea. I tried to keep it mysterious in nature because I have a lot of unknown variables. I also wanted people to put themselves in these shoes, so this isn’t about me per se. I wanted the lake to be as inspiring as it is mysterious, trying to embody a bit of Cass in it.

An Afternoon Stroll - Ominis Gaunt
Tumblr media
A/N: Idk what this is I just had an idea and went with it🫣 ominis is definitely a Dom after that kiss that’s all I’m gonna say 🤭🫣🫠
“I want to show you something.” The soft voice had pulled ominis out of his daydream as he sat on the marbled floor. He hadn’t even heard you approach, which was odd since he always knew when you were near by the clicking of the boots that you wore - everyday - since he’d met you. “Where are your shoes?” narrowing his eyes in confusion, the boy couldn’t stop the question rolling from his tongue as he moved his head in your direction as you knelt by him. You giggled then and ominis couldn’t stop the smile that graced his face feeling you lean closer to him. “You’ll see.” The words were a soft whisper against his ear, causing his face to heat and his smile to widen. “Well I won’t actually.” Ominis couldn’t help the sarcasm that seeped throughout the sentence as he laughed.
He knew you were rolling your eyes because he’d heard you click your tongue, something you did often when he spoke with such mordacity; You huff at him before gripping his hands pulling him to a stand. “You think you’re so funny don’t you?” You chortle at him guiding him through the castle. “I know I am darling.” The name had shut you up as he knew it would, and you gripped his hand tighter, walking at a slightly quicker pace. “Don’t tease me ominis.” You picked up your pace again, continuing your journey still with him by your side. “There’s some stairs here ominis. We’re going down.” Even when he had tickled a nerve in you, you couldn’t change your ways when it came to looking out for him; after all you did love the boy, even if you wouldn’t admit it yet.
You had walked for a good fifteen minutes and now had ended up outside the clock tower courtyard making your way to the lake when ominis stops. “Why are we outside?” He pauses sucking a breathe. “Better yet why are you outside, without your shoes?” You huff and pull on his arm again, a soft push for him to keep walking. “Well you’ll find out soon if you keep moving- we’re losing daylight.” As you spoke the spring breeze blew softly past the both of you. Ominis thought he could just stay in this moment forever- your sweet floral scent encasing him embracing his senses through the air. He sighed and all of a sudden you pulled him to an abrupt stop.
“We’re here!” The sound of your excitement made ominis grin the feeling rubbing off on him too. “Now take off your shoes!”
“What? You have to be joking.”
“Ominis, I have never been more serious in my entire life.” At that he finally gave in removing his shoes and placing them nearly by his feet. “Now your socks.” You giggle at his puzzled face yet he doesn’t falter and continues with your demand.
“One of my favourite things back home was walking through the fields barefoot, and walking along the shoreline.” You walked backwards into the lake your ankles now enveloped in its depths - as you walked further the water seeped into the fabric of your skirt weighing it into the water where it met at the hem. “One day I’ll take you to the beach, but for now, the black lake will have to do.” Ominis now stepped forward with you; his hands still intwined with your own, the cool water tickled his toes and he let out a breathe in shock, the action causing you to laugh softly. “I always feel so free doing this, and I want to share that feeling with you. A time away from everything where we can let go. Where you can relax, ominis.” The blonde boy stepped closer - releasing your hands and guiding them around his neck while brought his own to you waist. “Thank you.” He pulled you in tighter, his arms crossing behind your back as he leaned his face into your neck; hot breath caressed your skin setting it alight, your own breathing hitched and heat rose to your cheeks.
“Ominis, i-.” You pause as he pulled away, brows creased together in concern.
You pull your hands from around his neck and let them rest lazily on his chest. He places a cool ivory palm against your increasingly heated cheek as he speaks. “What’s wrong?” The worry in his voice made you melt instantly; leaning into his palm you admire him: his cloudy iris’ and those perfect little dots that decorated his alabaster skin, his face was like it had been crafted by an artist who was searching for the exact rendition of true beauty. In this moment as you stared up into at his face, you knew, that this was the moment you were waiting for; with no hesitation you lean forward burying your toes into floor of the lake and press your lips chastely against his. He stood frozen for a moment and you almost pulled away in rejection.
A sudden fire had ignited within ominis, his hand moved to grip your hip while the over travelled from your cheek to the back of your neck, tilting it back as he kissed you with a force that made your knees buckle. His tongue grazed along your bottom lip and you allowed him the access you both desired; the angle he held your head at let him explore your lips freely as he groans into your mouth in satisfaction. When he finally pulled his lips from yours you were left putty in his arms, ominis pressed his head against your own. “I’d love for you to take me for a stroll on the beach if I could kiss you like that again, darling.”

HC that Remus is a total fish when it comes to swimming. The boys have to spend hours begging him to get out of the lake almost every day the weather allows it. And one time after a particularly bad moon Sirius finds him sitting up to his eyes in the lake even though it's raining cats and dogs. Sirius joins him and after the first strike of lightning they have to book it back to the castle laughing the whole way. They get detention for the mess of water and mud plus being out of bed late but it was so worth it.

The lake doesn't know you.
Yet, for some reason, it lets you do a lot of things.
It's strange. Strange for the lake itself.
When you touch the water, you'd swear something is pulling on your hand. Even though there's no one in the water. It wants you to stay.
You need to be careful. The lake is not very good at remembering where the line between asking and forcing lies.

There is a lake far off to the east, (or is it west?) one so dark they say that if one were to put their hand in the water, they’d never see it again.
Lakes don’t normally have tides, but this one does, as if it has no care for the laws of land and water. When the tide is out, pools of inky black water remain on the rocks.
Just like the lake, you can’t see what’s under the surface, some say that the pools are just as deep as the lake itself that you’ll disappear if you dare to jump in or if you look into them you’ll forget what you saw as soon as you look away, left with the constant feeling that you should remember, the words forever at the tip of your tongue.
I’ve seen the lake, I’ve seen the tides role in on those foolish enough to not give proper credence, that believe they are above consequence, I’ve seen the bones left in its wake, as the tides role out as of it hadn’t moved at all.
I stay on the rocks, it’s a false sense of security I know, the pools around me are just as dangerous as the vast lake below me, but this way I can reach the white clovers in the grassy patches that couldn’t survive closer to the lake.
And as each ring of clover ends, I lay them in the pools, and watch as they sink into the dark. I start on another ring of clovers.

A friend, a blanket, a basket of bread.
The inky black lake stretches out ahead.
We've been here before, haven't we? You've died here before, haven't you?
Words won't be spoken here, a tragedy for us. The scenic darkness a beauty, not always to us.
We search fruitlessly for creatures, blanket spread. We share with the deep, our pre-cut bread.
A simple thought, a dare, a terrible mistake. We thought we could swim across your lake.
Our limbs dragged down by darkened sludge, only one will wake atop the mud.
We will return again, one fair and new, a stainless brass. The other turns away, coughing black ink, to mourn her loss.
She will return to this place, same day in and same day out. She is fated to your lake, but will scratch and claw and bite.
Having funky thoughts about peepaw cass @the-black-lake
