One of my favorite photos from the Frog concert this summer.
Immediately following the conclusion of their last performance (which happened to be "Wish Upon a Bar," a song I had specifically asked for), my partner guided me toward the exit, reminding me of our limited time before our train departure. As we head towards the stairs, I happened to glance upward and spotted Danny and Tom together. I came to a halt and captured this moment. It was the flawless conclusion to an unforgettable evening.

*puts hands on hollywood exec's shoulders, staring unblinking into their eyes* listen to me. you will never get people who hate musicals to like musicals by making your musical less of a musical. if you hide the fact that your film is a musical in the advertising, you're going to get a lot of low ratings from people who hate musicals and went into your movie not expecting a musical and got one anyway. people who hate musicals will hate them no matter how realistic and diegetic and lowkey you try to make it. they will hate musicals even if you completely excise anything complicated, over the top, silly, or even slightly challenging. they will hate musicals even if you cut half the songs. they will hate musicals even if you cast that a-lister who can't sing worth a damn. stop trying to market to people who hate musicals. they're a lost cause. your audience should be people who love musicals. this half-assed middle ground pisses off both camps. just embrace the fact that your movie is a musical. lean into it. don't try and trick musical haters into coming to your film when you could be marketing to the theater kids. better cringe than a coward.

New York-based indie outfit Glimmer — Dead Stars‘ Jeff Moore (vocals, guitar) and Jaye Moore (drums) with Johnny Nicholls (guitar) and Kevin Dobbins (bass) — have quickly established a sound that incorporates elements of grunge, shoegaze and hook-driven alternative rock, influenced by Nothing, Narrow Head, Dinosaur Jr., My Bloody Valentine and more. The band’s two latest singles “Buried” and its B-side “Daydream” were recorded in Brooklyn with Jeff Berner and mastered by Will Yip. “Buried” is a 120 Minutes MTV-era like anthem, built around layers of fuzzy power chord-driven guitars, a propulsive backbeat, Jeff Moore’s fittingly dreamy vocals paired with enormous and explosive choruses. “Buried” is the sort of timeless song, that you’d see kids bopping to at a sweaty, dingy club or house party at any point in the past 30 years or so. “Daydream” is a classic alt-rock-like ballad featuring reverb-soaked guitars, gently padded drums that slowly builds up to an explosive, shout-along and raise your beer in the air worthy hook and chorus. The member of Glimmer will be embarking on a busy month of live dates that includes several NYC area shows including February 24, 2024 at EWEL; March 9, 2024 at TBD as a result of Saint Vitus Bar‘s recent shutdown; and March 21, 2024 at The Broadway. Check out the rest of the tour dates below. Upcoming shows: 2/22: Kingston, NY @ Tubby’s (w/ Cigarettes for Breakfast, Husbands)2/23: Boston, MA @ Cantab Underground (w/ Cigarettes for Breakfast, Husbands, The Dreamtoday)2/24: Brooklyn, NY @ EWEL (w/ Glitterspitter, Balloon Snake)3/9: Brooklyn, NY @ Saint Vitus (w/ Dosser, Wax Girl)3/21: Brooklyn, NY @ The Broadway (w/ Gluehead, Cigarettes for Breakfast, Semaphore)3/22: Lancaster, PA @ The Upside (w/ Joyful Forfeit, Cigarettes for Breakfast, Blind Hope)3/23: Philadelphia, PA @ Ukie Club (w/ Cigarettes for Breakfast, Spirit Weak, The Warhawks)

NXCRE and the Villains – The Broadway – Brooklyn, NY – November 13, 2023
NXCRE & the Villains is a NYC based alternative band that has been gaining traction quickly, for a very good reason. The band was utterly captivating in their recent performance at The Broadway in Brooklyn. The show began with the lead singer introducing the band to the audience. The group is composed of singer NXCRE (pronounced like Zachery but with an N), guitarist Jay Sambuco, bassist Coqui and drummer Loyalty. The band recently released their single “Dabbington City” and is anticipating an album release FEAN IS WAR.
Tumblr media
The band's sound is a blend of all the beloved elements of the genre. NXCRE’s vocals are hypnotizing, and their energy is infectious. Without hesitation the frontman made sure that his audience knew they were important to the band, the appreciation for them coming out that night. Sambuco’s performance on guitar is a sight to behold, with riffs that are igniting and solos that are reminiscent of the classics. Bassist Coqui plays a dynamic bass with riffs that layer perfectly and add depth to the performance. Loyalty's percussion is the heartbeat of the band, as NXCRE calls it. His drumming guides you through the songs effortlessly, their playing is energetic and brings the performance to incredible heights. The band performed “Dabbington City,” “Usurper” and “Indigo,” along with some unreleased tracks from the upcoming album.
Tumblr media
“Indigo” is intricate and grand in sound, with layered guitar and bass riffs, pensive drums and melodic harmonies. The lyrics are sincere and make it easy to relate to, creating the feeling of yearning for something more. The bridge is undeniably electric as the members perform in sync, bringing their energy to a new level. During more intimate moments, like during their newest single “Dabbington City,” the intensity isn't lost. NXCREs sang sweetly and earnestly “you said you'd never let my heart go dark; I need someone to tell me why” as the crowd screamed the lyrics back. The energy in the room is palpable.
Tumblr media
The performance reached a new height during stadium-ready closer “Usurper.” All the band mates were completely on fire, giving their all in the performance. NXCRE jumped into the crowd during the solo to mosh with the audience. Drummer Loyalty was standing, putting his all into drums. Sambuco stood at the edge of the stage leaning into the crowd, shredding away. Coqui crab walked across stage with a mean presence. It was a remarkable sight, all members fully immersed in the performance. They are meant to play stadiums with that energy.
Tumblr media
The band's sound is nostalgic but refreshing, instantly bringing me back to the era of Van’s Warped Tour, when alternative music was front and center in the music scene. Each member brings undeniable uniqueness that is recognizable, coming together to create a sound that is insanely satisfying. Their potential is limitless and their energy when performing is something everyone should get the chance to see.
Tumblr media
NXCRE and The Villains are a rising talent in NYC that is bound to take over the scene, as part of this new wave of alternative music. Check out their latest single “Dabbington City” on all streaming platforms now.
