#the buckley siblings
buck and maddie thinking everything is their fault and that leaving would be better for everyone else is the peak of traumatized children who don't want to bother.

The thing is .. neither Buckley sibling WANTED to leave. You know that Buck loves the 118 but he was hurting so bad that he decided he wanted to exile himself. But the moment that everyone reminded him of how much they loved him, he backed off.
And then you have Maddie. She doesn't WANT to leave her family, she just thought it was the better option. And if someone had been there when she was walking away, she would have stayed and she wouldn't be gone right now. That's the realization that is hurting me right now.

Maddie and Buck aren't used to having a family that wants them to stick around. Their parents disowned Maddie and pushed Buck into running away. Aside from eachother, neither of them are used to having people who love them even when the going gets tough. By the end of the season, I hope they both realise their importance.

MADDIE BUCKLEY and EVAN BUCKLEY in 9-1-1: Buck Begins (id under cut)
[Image Description: 4 gifs of Maddie Buckley and Evan Buckley from 9-1-1, season 4 episode 4, Buck Begins.
ID 1: A shot of Maddie smiling up at Buck before her facial expression turns more emotional. Text on the gif is a quote from Chimney about Maddie and Buck's relationship. It says, "She didn't want you to think that you weren't wanted. That you weren't loved."
ID 2: A series of gifs of Buck from different scenes in the episode, one fading into the other. The first gif is a shot of Buck facing the window in Chimney's apartment, before slowly turning away, a serious, sad expression on his face. The second is of Buck when he was younger, arguing with his parents in Maddie's defense outside their house. The third is a shot of Buck staring off into the distance in his turnout gear. The final gif is of Buck when he had just dropped out of college, standing in the entryway with his parents as they yell at him. Each gif is black and white. Text on the gif is Buck's response to Chimney's comment. It says, "You know what? I wasn't."
ID 3: A shot of Maddie and Buck from the scene where Buck visits Maddie in the hospital after his motorcycle accident. Maddie bends down towards Buck and reaches her hand out to touch his cheek. He blinks up at her. Text on the gif is Chimney's response back to Buck. It says, "Yes you were."
ID 4: A series of gifs of Buck and Maddie throughout the episode, linking their hands in a pinky promise. Each gif fades into the next. The first scene is from when they were younger kids, sitting on Buck's bed in his childhood room. The second scene is from when they were older, sitting in Maddie's jeep. The final scene is from when they're grown up, sitting across from each other at the table in Buck's loft. Text on the gif finishes Chimney's sentence. It says, "By her."

Really proud of us as a fandom for collectively deciding that even if Buck has chosen to forgive his parents, Eddie has not.

Buck saying that Maddie gave him baths when he was 2 is a really cute little memory offhand when he mentions it in 2x01.
.....until you think about the fact that Daniel had only died a year before so Margaret and Phillip were most likely still catatonic with grief. Maddie was probably the only one who made sure he was bathed, with no shampoo in his hair, and in clean clothes, and tucked into bed safe at the end of the day at that stage in his life.

Nah but the 911 writers missed when they didn’t have Buck go home to Maddie sitting in his apartment circa 2x01.

FUCK! Okay but watching that scene where there's the Doug reveal got me thinking about that Christmas card again. Because Buck specifically said that he didn't trust Doug not to throw his postcards out which is why he was sending them to the hospital and I think Maddie agreed because she kept them in her locker. But it was her way of living vicariously through Buck, right? She'd given him her freedom so that he could live, he could become Buck! But Buck was tether less for a while. He just was drifting from one place to the next until Buck sent her a postcard when he finally landed in LA and joined the LAFD. Maybe the Christmas card was the first time she'd gotten a card from the same place from him. A second card that wasn't some brand new place he decide to explore.
What if the Christmas card was Maddie seeing the Buck finally found his place in the world; his home. And she was so happy she didn't even think because Buck was finally home. He wasn't going in circles anymore. He seemed settled. So, she brought a little piece of home with her for once because that last Christmas with Doug was one of the worst Christmases she ever had. She brought the Christmas card from Buck and put it on the tree so that she could have a little piece of home too and see that he was settled and happy at least. But then Doug wrecked the tree and you see her surrounded by broken ornaments and lights and even herself.
But not that postcard. It was still whole and that smile was still there and what does Maddie do when she hears Doug coming?
She hides the card.
She hides it, protects it, and deflects his attention from it. Because this Christmas card, this symbol of Buck's home, not being safe in Maddie's "home" with Doug served as a wake up call for her that she would never be safe, things with Doug were never going to change, and her home with Doug was never going to be a place she could bring Buck to. Because things "weren't complicated at home right now" with the chance of things changing. They were never going to change. And Maddie didn't want to risk Doug wrecking that card.
Buck had run to Maddie when he needed her and now he was in a place that she could run to him.
I just.... Buck finding his home being Maddie's last lifeline so that she realized she had a place she could run to even if just a little while!
*Slams hand into the wall*
I JUST LOVE THEM SO MUCH!

I know it’s been weeks and pretty much everyone’s in agreement that the Buckley parents are assholes, but... I am never getting over how painful this moment was????
They could have easily waited until Buck wasn’t there to present the box to Maddie (I’m not saying that would have been any better at all, but I just mean...come on, tact anyone?!) but they give it to Maddie in front of Buck, knowing full well that he doesn’t have his own box. They don’t give him an explanation when he asks about his either, they just let the moment stew, so Chim has to jump in and try to salvage the situation.
And then when Maddie says “I can’t believe you kept all this”, their dad just says; “You thought we’d just throw it away?” in the most thoughtless way possible when that’s clearly what they did do to Buck’s stuff??? I just......mate.... what a dick.
Like I’ll be over here crying in sad-rage, don’t mind me.
