Prompt 197
“Guys look, I got us pet rocks!”
“That’s nice- Danny, why are the rocks moving?”
“Ectoplasm. Obviously. They eat bad emotions, isn’t that cool?!”
“They aren’t going to get that big though, right? I mean, we’re moving to the countryside but still.”
“I mean, they shouldn’t? Dang, maybe I should have asked Dora more questions…”

I wanted to make a post with some links to explain why afforestation (planting trees to stop desertification; the change of environments into deserts) is not always the best approach to take.
So lately on social media there's been a lot of misinformation of like tree planting = always good. But the problem with this approach/view is it gives companies and governments the excuse to use forest monocultures (millions of one or few tree species) to fund logging industries instead of taking the time to develop an ecosystem of native plants.
(Link to real life example:)
youtube
Ecosystems undergo ecological succession where bare land is converted to ecologically productive (lots of different organisms with different roles in the ecosystem, nutritious soil) and biodiverse (lots of different species) land. It also takes a long time for this to happen.
See these:

Tumblr media
Here's some links a video explaining why just planting trees ultimately doesn't work in the long term if done wrong:
youtube
And here's some links to videos explaining how it can be done right when we actually look at the evolutionary history of the ecosystem and ecology of it and restore it using native species and less rigid attitudes.

Habitat restoration is a HUGE branch of conservation biology and is constantly causing disagreements in scientific communities because its a new science and there are so many different branches of biology (e.g. ecology, evolutionary history and ecology, geology, etc) we need to consider and so many old attitudes that need revising in some conservation techniques.
This is only a guide to trees alone in habitat conservation as well, there are so many different habitats other than forest that need to be conserved as well as forests, particularly wetlands which are so abundant in biodiversity and ecosystem services (things ecosystems can do for the world essentially, unfortunately the focus in research can be on what ecosystems can do for us).
I've also not looked much at how this has been done outside of official organisations and I wanna look more at conservation projects ran illegally but I'm bad at finding information lol

Just thinking about the implications of this, but Halsin's way of indicating that his family has long passed is: "save for [him], [his] line perished a long time ago".
Aside from it being a decidedly more old fashioned and more eloquent way of indicating what happened (as is shown in shades in Halsin's speaking patterns, which is likely trying to illustrate his age as well as push the "wise mentor" angle), by stating that his line has ended with him, practically, it means both sets of grandparents are gone, both parents are gone, and either Halsin is an only child (unlikely considering Wood Elves, but possible), or any and all of his siblings are gone, too. And if you stretch what you consider part of a line, rather than just keeping direct, that could extend to aunts and uncles and cousins as well (though it's hard to say concretely what Halsin includes in a familial line).
So it leaves me to wonder what happened to reduce an entire elven line to one elf, when Halsin himself is only just approaching middle-age and he pointedly says it happened a long time ago, so it wasn't a recent event, and the lot of them likely didn't die from old age/natural causes. Was his entire village wiped out at one point? Disease or a raid or orcs or a wildfire or what?

(to know more about the story and the calendar on pre-order check out previous posts!)
June would be Lance's first official Pride Parade. He watched it from the side once or twice but has never been a part of it. But this time Keith would take him with Ulaz who goes along with his biker (gang) i mean club. Surrounded by rainbows, smiles, full of pride faces - and also? Harleys and leather clad bears who bump fists with Keith like they buried someone in the forest? - Lance would feel like "impossible" was a made up word.

* * *
It is almost like there is more green today than there was yesterday. It must be my own imagination. It is still too early. Silently, Earth is rising higher, a flawless, round drop of water that holds everything within: each day past and future. From this distance, there isn’t a single scar visible. To me it seems that if I reached out my hand, I could stroke its surface, caress it back to sleep. The faint glow of water and earth would remain on my fingertips, and it would linger there, when I would later fall asleep in my room my hand under my cheek. Perhaps, when I would wake up, I would find a trace of it on my face, like a memory, or a dried tear. — Emmi Itäranta. The Moonday Letters. Quote tranlated by me (unofficial)

When rabbis warn you about how difficult Jewish conversion is they aren't talking about the time it takes they're actually talking about the sheer existential pit that forms inside you when you think about Jewish life pre Shoah and how you're choosing to bear generational trauma the likes of which you can't even imagine until it's 2am and you're listening to Mitski and it hits you and you're dissociating on the toilet

On a completely different note, the other potential updated dialogue regarding Halsin and his experience in the Underdark, particularly the phrases: "I lost friends, confidantes and had the..." and "The Shadow Curse robbed me of almost all my peers," does pretty much cement for me that whatever happened to Halsin's family happened pre-Shadow Curse.
I feel like he'd specifically mention his line or family here if it had been what took them, too. "Peers and friends and confidantes" reads more to me as him talking about losing his Grove family - the one he found *after* his bio family.
