February 2016
Feb 11th - Kanye debuts his song Famous at his Yeezy fashion show. It contains the infamous lyric, 'I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that bitch famous.' Gigi Hadid and Austin Swift are quick to express their disapproval. (x)
Feb 12th - Taylor's publicist Tree Paine releases a statement saying "Kanye did not call for approval, but to ask Taylor to release his single 'Famous' on her Twitter account. She declined and cautioned him about releasing a song with such a strong misogynistic message. Taylor was never made aware of the actual lyric, "I made that bitch famous.’" (x)
Tumblr media
Ruby Rose condemns Kanye, tweeting, 'Too many lines crossed. If I put myself in the shoes of the women he has hurt recently. Victims of Bill Cosby, the slut shaming, Amber… And now my dear friend Taylor.. Right before another huge moment for her.. Can I still support him and call myself a feminist? A friend? No.' (x)
Kanye claims on Twitter that Taylor thought the lyric was funny and that she came up with it herself. He also claimed Taylor told a mutual friend over dinner that, 'I can't be mad at Kanye because he made me famous!' (x)
Sometime in the days leading up to the Grammys - Taylor's 73 Questions with Vogue interview is filmed in LA (it is not published until April, soon after her Vogue cover is released). In the video, she says she is currently busy 'working out and getting ready for Grammys' (presumably referring to rehearsals since she was the opening performer that year). (Update: turns out the interview was filmed on the 2nd Feb.)
Some other answers she gave in this interview:
What are you completely bored of in life right now? Clickbait.
What's your favourite food? I mean, if we're just saying, like, what I wish I could eat every day if calories didn't count, is like, chicken tenders.
What's one thing you still have from your childhood? My insecurities.
What's something you've always wanted to try but you've been too scared to do? Coachella.
What advice would you give to anyone who wants to become a singer? Uh, get a good lawyer.
What's the one thing you wish you knew at nineteen? If I could talk to my nineteen-year-old self I'd just say, hey, you know, you're gonna date just like a normal twenty-something should be allowed to, but you're going to be a national lightning rod for slut-shaming.
What do you think is the most important life lesson for someone to learn? That karma is real.
Feb 15th - Taylor attends the 58th Annual Grammy Awards in LA. She opens the televised show with a performance of Out of the Woods (x) and debuts her Anna Wintour-esque bob (x).
After her performance, she is seen crying in the audience while Selena (her plus-one for the evening) comforts her. Apparently she is upset about missing a note while performing. (x) (video)
1989 wins Album of the Year, making her the first woman to win this award twice. In her acceptance speech, she references the situation with Kanye, saying, 'I want to say to all the young women out there, there are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success, or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame.' (x)
Taylor attends the Republic Records afterparty with friends and then-boyfriend Calvin Harris, who was not there for the awards show itself. (x)
In her 2020 documentary Miss Americana, Taylor had this to say about the 2016 Grammys: (x)
My life had never been better. I had won album of the year at the Grammys for a second time, which I never thought was a possibility. And I remembered thinking afterward, oh my god, that was all you wanted. Oh god, that was all you wanted. That was all you focused on. And you get to the mountaintop and you look around and you’re like, oh god. What now? I didn’t have a partner that I climbed it with that I could, like, high five. I didn’t have anyone I could talk to who could relate to what I was – you know? I had my mom. But I just wondered, shouldn’t I have someone that I could call right now?
Feb 16th - Calvin posts a photo of Taylor accepting her AOTY Grammy to social media with the caption, 'Congratulations to my beautiful girlfriend.' (x) I cannot believe this post is still up 💀💀
Tumblr media
Taylor goes for lunch with Scott and Andrea at Cecconi's in LA. (x)
Feb 17th - Taylor is seen out shopping in Beverly Hills. (x)
The NME Awards take place in London at the O2 Academy. Taylor wins Best International Solo Artist but is not there in person. Instead, a pre-recorded video of her accepting the award is played at the ceremony. (x) Her outfit and haircut suggest that the video was filmed on the same day as her Vogue 73 Questions interview at her LA house.
Feb 19th - Taylor announces on Twitter that New Romantics will be the next single from 1989. (x)
She is seen getting off her plane in Reading, PA (x) and visiting her childhood home. (x)
Tumblr media
Feb 20th - Taylor is the maid of honour at her childhood best friend Britany Maack's wedding in Pennsylvania. (x) She brings Vogue reporter Jason Gay with her, and he writes about the weekend for Taylor's Vogue cover story, published in the May edition. (x)
Tumblr media
A few excerpts from that weekend (not published until almost two months later): (x)
Swift says she is ready to lie a little low. After the wedding, she will go to New York, where she will be spotted dining with her friend Lena Dunham, and then be seen a week later in Los Angeles with her brother, Austin, and her friend Lorde at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. As for future plans . . . who knows? For the first time in years, Swift is not sure exactly what is next. She is very much OK with this.
So what the hell are you going to do with the rest of your life, Taylor Swift?
“I have no idea,” she says, with a sigh that’s more blissful than anxious. “This is the first time in ten years that I haven’t known. I just decided that after the past year, with all of the unbelievable things that happened . . . I decided I was going to live my life a little bit without the pressure on myself to create something.”
//
Because I’m a hopeless cheeseball, I can’t help asking: Being part of this wedding, does it make Swift think about being married some day? For the past year, she has been seeing the Scottish DJ-producer Calvin Harris. Harris is not here with her, but in early March, he and Swift will post cutesy notices on social media—his on Snapchat; hers on Instagram—commemorating the one-year status of their relationship. Soon after, both will post photographs of an idyllic, whereabouts-unknown vacation in the tropics, with ts + aw written in the sand. (Harris’s given name is Adam Wiles.)
“I’m just taking things as they come,” Swift says. “I’m in a magical relationship right now. And of course I want it to be ours, and low-key . . . this is the one thing that’s been mine about my personal life.”
//
“I think the world is so bored with the [Kanye] saga,” she goes on. “I don’t want to add anything to it, because then there’s just more.”
Feb 21st - Taylor donates $250,000 to Kesha after she loses her lawsuit against Dr Luke and Sony. (x)
Taylor goes to New York and visits the Vogue offices. (x) She also meets Lena Dunham for dinner. (x)
Tumblr media
Feb 22nd - Demi Lovato tweets, 'Take something to Capitol Hill or actually speak out about something and then I'll be impressed.' The tweet is widely interpreted as shading Taylor following the news of her donation. (x)
Taylor is papped arriving at and leaving Milk Studios, a photography studio in NYC. (x) I think this was when they shot her Vogue cover (she wore a wig for the cover shoot and only bleached her actual hair in April when the magazine came out).
Tumblr media
Feb 23rd - Kanye brings up the Famous controversy while onstage at 1 OAK nightclub in LA. He claims Taylor said “Ooh Kanye, I like that line!” when he told her about the line 'I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex.' “Then she won her award and said something completely different! She not cool no more. She had two seconds to be cool and she fucked it up.” (x)
Feb 24th - Taylor and Jack Antonoff go for dinner at the Maia restaurant in LA. (x)
Tumblr media
Feb 28th - Taylor attends the Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty in LA. (x) She is photographed with Lorde and Austin.

‘always and forever, lara jean’: a bungled mess of my thoughts while watching the movie
Tumblr media
Alright, cards on the table: I never finished reading the book. I got bored a couple of pages in, so I just read up the summary on Wikipedia and called it a day.
Not gonna lie, I expected better from the movies. I loved the first movie; it was cute, it was fun, it hit all the right places. The second movie was… eh. Jordan Fisher is cute, so that’s a plus.
And then we got the third movie; the final in the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy.
And it was somehow even worse.
Maybe I’m exaggerating. Despite its shortcomings in the plot and character development-related departments (the fact that Lara Jean wrote addresses for letters she never meant to send is something that will bother me on my deathbed), the movies have their merits. They’re cutesy and charming and enjoyable, overall; movie-LJ is sweet and unashamedly a girly-girl, which is a refreshing change from the #NotLikeOtherGirls, pick-me girls and bruh girls we had in loads of other YA movies growing up. Peter’s pretty cute, too; he’s not a possessive freak like so many other love interests (The Kissing Booth, After, Anna and the French Kiss), and his and Lara Jean’s dynamic is cute, too. Not to mention- we finally have an Asian lead whose Asian-ness isn’t the whole focus of the story!
Again, maybe I’m being extra with all this. The series is, at its core, solely for entertainment purposes. Not every piece of media has to have an underlying message and you shouldn’t need to read between every goddamn line to find something worthy of enjoying. They’re certainly helpful for whiling away a couple of hours; perfect for bingeing with a pint of ice cream in hand, and all of this is in good fun.
Also, it goes without saying, but: spoilers ahead.
The film beings with Lara Jean scribbling a postcard to Peter while she’s in Korea with her family. The inclusion of that little snapshot of Asian culture made me so happy- seriously, fuck everyone who says diversity in media doesn’t matter. I’m not even Korean, and I was overjoyed at seeing a couple of scenes just from the same continent I’m on. The K-pop music in the background was a fun touch, too (although all Korean music isn’t K-pop, but that’s a rant for another day).
(Also: Blackpink has so many more suitable songs than Pretty Savage that go with the theme of the movies. Kill This Love in the second movie while Lara Jean is getting ready to go to her boyfriend’s match is bad enough- they’re supposed to be in love in that scene, goddammit.)
One thing that bothered me throughout the movies is how obviously non-Korean Lara Jean and Margot look. It’s like whoever chose the cast went for any random Asian- Lana’s Vietnamese and Janel Parrish is half-Chinese, and it’s so obvious. You seriously couldn’t find two Korean-Americans who even vaguely resembled each other so they could pass for sisters? The actresses do a stunning job and I don’t want to shit on them, but I just wish they didn’t go with the ‘all Asians look the same, what’s the difference?’ mindset.
Also, a nitpicky thing I’ve noticed in movies with characters who read a lot: no one holds their books up while they’re reading. Your arms start to cramp, which is why you keep your book in your lap while you’re reading, or you rest on your belly and hold the book in front of you. My spine and shoulders didn’t suffer years of torture as a chronic reader for you to include characters who hold their books up while reading.
A major gripe I have with Always and Forever, Lara Jean is how the characters are almost jarringly out of character- not from the books, but from the two previous movies, too. Lara Jean didn’t have much of a character to begin with, so I can’t say much about her (she dissed Oasis at one point; it’s okay for me to be mean to her), but the rest of them are either caricatures of themselves or just totally different people.
Movie Peter >>> Book Peter. He’s almost too perfect (except for the fact that he unironically loves The Fast and the Furious, which… ew), almost too much of the ideal boyfriend. Not that my perpetually single arse would know. How do boyfriends even work? I wouldn’t know the first thing to do with one; how often should you feed it? Do you need to take it on walks?
(In the notes I’ve written towards the end of the film, I’ve complained about Peter being immature and making Lara Jean feel bad about following her dream to go to NYU. He confuses me.)
Not to mention how distractingly adorable Noah Centineo is from some angles and under certain lighting conditions (other times, he reminds me of the human version of Shrek and that bothered me). King of weird Tweets and Instagram captions though he may be, he’s got a really nice smile, and his gravelly voice is both parts sexy and disturbing.
But I digress.
I’ll never forgive the directors for what they did to Kitty and Chris- two of my favorite characters, from both the books and the movies. Kitty’s annoying to the point of being borderline unlikeable- gone is the occasionally snarky comic relief we all came to love; in her place is an annoying brat whose every line comes out forced. Also, making soap is fun; fuck you, Kitty.
Chris is essentially Dixie D’Amelio’s character from that TikToker Grey’s Anatomy ripoff; the main character in One Direction fanfiction from 2012 who doesn’t want to go to the concert but her best friend gets a ticket for her so she can’t bail but Harry Styles sees her in the crowd and falls in love at first sight and 50k of mutual pining and misunderstandings late, they get together. She’s cynical and snarky and hates capitalism and consumerism and prom (because of course she does), but secretly, she’s into it (because of course she is). My guess is that she’s there to appease all the arseholes (including myself) who accused the characters of being too one-dimensional, but it seems too out of place in a movie that doesn’t have much plot to begin with.
I really, really hate how Lucas was done dirty- throughout every single movie. Of course, it’s Lara Jean’s story so not every side character has to be fully fleshed out- but you’d think three. entire. movies. would be enough to give Lucas a bigger role than the GBF and the token black guy for the diversity brownie points. Every single time Lucas shows up, it’s to push Lara Jean and Peter’s story forward. I would’ve liked to see a romance for him pushed forward instead one for Chris- especially because he says, at one point in a previous movie, that it’s hard to find other gay boys, so it would’ve been sweet to see him find love- and Chris’s character arc could’ve been focused on reconciling with Genevieve. Instead, we see the OG Reggie from Riverdale be the one to show Chris the bright side of monogamy, and Lucas gets a date to prom as an afterthought (another darkskin black dude, so no one thinks the film is racist).
Genevieve’s character in this movie gives me whiplash. Look, I’m all for girls supporting girls- healthy female relationships are something way too many YA movies lack- but she goes from bitch queen extraordinaire to friendly the moment the next scene calls for it. Her character isn’t consistent. A redemption arc should be executed cleanly and believably; you can’t have a character be a total prick one moment and then suddenly be, “Hey, if you get into NYU, let me know,” the next.
And Genevieve’s still an arsehole to Chris; at one point, in NYC, while they’re at the NYU campus grounds (I knew that Lara Jean was going to go to NYU the moment she saw all the banners; I fucking called it), Genevieve tells Chris, “University is for people who actually have a future,” and I recoiled. I’m not the nicest of people and yet that was going too far. Chris doesn’t hesitate to shoot back a, “You peaked in high school,”, but still. Y i k e s. You can’t convince me someone’s turned over a new leaf when they say something like that.
Lara Jean’s dad (forgot his name; gonna call him Dr. Covey) is as unremarkable as ever, and his new wife (forgot her name, too… Trisha? Trina? Eh, something like that) is… unsettling. I mean, I get that they’re all loved up and twitterpatted, but there’s something about all the smiling they’ve got going on that chills me to the bone.
Also, Trisha/Trina kinda looks like TikTok’s ThatVeganTeacher and it bothers me.
Another huge problem with this movie even being made is that the series never had enough plot to continue onto a trilogy. Lara Jean’s letters are what the plots of the first and second movies revolve around; the third only mentions them in passing. The final love letter from Peter was a cute callback, but there’s a massive continuity issue with the first two movies and this last one- both character and plot-wise.
Maybe I’m not articulating this clearly enough, so I’ll use an example: take Harry Potter, for example. Harry’s main goal throughout the series is defeating Voldemort. And it takes all seven books for him to get there, to finally achieve this.
Lara Jean’s goal in the first movie changes midway; from keeping up the façade with Peter so she can avoid the crap with the rest of the letters getting out, to making her fake relationship real. It forms a bridge with the second movie; the letter that went out to John Ambrose, and her dithering between Peter and perfection (I’m not sorry). But what does the third movie have to do with any of this?
There were way too many music montages. You couldn’t go five minutes without a random pop song playing in the background, and it was annoying as hell. Don’t Look Back in Anger was w a s t e d on this stupid film. The artsy scenery shots were even worse- no, I don’t give a fuck about the New York skyline or a bird’s eye view of whatever vehicle Lara Jean is in. A few shots of Seoul would’ve sufficed; the rest was overkill. This movie is way too damn long already (almost 2 entire hours!!!); cut out a couple of those. No one cares.
I thought they’d pull the whole Aladdin trope with character-A-keeps-trying-to-tell-character-B-the-truth-about-a-lie-B-believes-in-about-A-but-B-keeps-interrupting, but Lara Jean (typing her name out is annoying, why couldn’t she have a single name, like both of her sisters?) comes clean earlier than I expected. Peter’s reaction about LJ not getting into Stanford is… uncharacteristically mature? No “Why did you lie to me?”, no accusations, not an ounce of betrayal. Which I did not expect from a guy who’s a little bitch for the greater part of book one (I really don’t like Book Peter, in case you couldn’t tell). I know fuck-all about book three’s Peter, so I can’t tell if he really did adopt this mature, well-adjusted persona, or the movie did it to make Peter seem like less of a dick (like they did it with the sextape-that-wasn’t-a-sextape in the first installment).
On a sidenote, how do these main characters in YA books get into really good colleges with zero to no visible effort? These arseholes fuck around for the entirety of the story and have way too much going on to actually do schoolwork, but they waltz into Ivy Leagues at the end. And apparently, I’m not the only one bothered by this.
There’s something to be said about how the movies don’t really sexualize minors (characters who are minors, to be fair. None of the MCs look anything like teenagers), though. It’s almost weird to see them not getting drunk and partying and having sex all the time. Maybe that’s why Lara Jean trying to get her hand on Peter’s dick felt so stilted and awkward (I cringed so hard when she kept trying to touch him and he kept pushing her hand away, holy shit).
And the kissing. It’s to be expected from a romance film, but there was so. Much. Kissing.
The amount of product placements (… actually, I could count only two: Apple and a pair of Beats headphones Lara Jean puts on at one point, but the movie shoved so many iPhones in my face that I’m obligated to exaggerate) would’ve made anti-capitalist Chris mad.
I’m guessing this all takes place in a parallel universe, sans the coronavirus. Still, being in quarantine this past year and being socially awkward for every other one, it was agonizing seeing everyone so close together in NYC. When Peter kissed the ball (lol) (I have the sense of humor of a straight boy in middle school, don’t judge me) when him and Lara Jean go bowling, I had a visceral reaction. And what are the odds of Peter meeting his estranged dad at the very same bowling alley?
Speaking of Peter’s daddy issues (I’ve written “Hardin but diluted” in my notes; I watched this movie at, like, 1 AM; I’m not entirely sure what was going through my head at that point)- I hated how they guilt-tripped Peter into giving his father another chance. In the wise words of Hannah Montana, everybody makes mistakes- but leaving your wife and two kids for another woman is pretty far from a little oopsie on Mr. Kavinsky’s part. I don’t blame Peter for hating him, and I’m not in a place to judge whether Mr. Kavinsky (does he get a first name?) should be forgiven or not, but I feel like they let him off too easy and made Peter seem like a misunderstood teenager with anger issues for not accepting Mr. Kavinsky’s (crappy) apology at once.
And it adds nothing to the story at all; Mr. Kavinsky peaces out after having one (01) coffee with his firstborn, and he’s never seen again. If you’re going to introduce a subplot, make it tie into the main storyline- the very least you could do is make it an important enough part of the story to have more than 10 minutes of the run time. It makes no sense as to why they’d bring up Peter’s dad in this last film, when he’s already gone through two perfectly fine. I guess it was a ‘tying everything up’ part… even though no one cared.
Lara Jean’s handwriting is surprisingly ugly for someone who’s written that many love letters. And her styling took a definite nosedive; her outfits in the first movie were so effing cute, but now they’re just… meh.
There are so many conversations and lines that the writers must’ve thought sounded good enough for someone to type out the quote in curly font and slap it on a screenshot from the movie to post on Instagram, but when it comes to the actual delivery, they just sounded… weird.
Peter says one time near the beginning of the film, “You know what I’m looking forward to the most in college? Never having to say goodnight,” because he expects him and Lara Jean to get into the same college.
But I guess the word they should’ve used was ‘good-bye’, because this just makes him sound stupid.
At one point, Lara Jean asks Kitty how much Kitty’s gonna miss her when she goes off to college, and Kitty says, “A four.” Later on, she confesses, “I’m gonna miss you a twelve, Lara Jean,” and all I could think was, “But we’re endgame, Archie!”
(In hindsight, I probably shouldn’t let people know I’ve watched Riverdale; it lessons my credibility.)
Still, there remains some good to be found: all the baked goods looked very delicious and made me crave chocolate chip cookies. Peter wearing the socks Lara Jean gifted him at the beginning of the movie was a cute gesture, and Lara Jean giving Peter her teal hatbox? The one she kept her love letters in? Was so? Cute? Help?
And hey, it’s a cliché that’s been done to death, but I’m always a sucker for that part in movies where the girl walks down the stairs in a pretty dress with her hand on the banister and the boy turns around and his mouth falls open and all he can say is, “Wow,”- and this film did not disappoint! Not to mention how cute both Lara Jean’s and Chris’s prom dresses were.
Dr. Covey and Trisha/Trina’s wedding was cute, too- I struggled to decide whether Kitty wearing a necklace that says ‘feminist’ and a tux is a bit too on-the-nose, but I’ve decided that it’s nothing to get my knickers all in a twist about (for clarification: it’s not the necklace or the crossdressing that made me debate this; I just wish they didn’t make a big deal out of it- I wish they didn’t have Kitty and Lara Jean get into an argument about her not wearing a dress, if that makes sense?).
And the final letter- the one from Peter to Lara Jean- I ate that shit up; it was so, so, so cute.
In conclusion (why is it so easy for me to crank out 3k about my thoughts on a Netflix movie and yet when it comes to English Lit. at school, I’d stare at a blank sheet of foolscap for ages?), did I enjoy the movie? Not really. There were parts of it that I liked, but it was overall too boring and I kept wishing I’d watched the new SKZ Code episode instead every few minutes.
But that doesn’t mean that it was bad. I kinda feel a little sad, actually, now that Lara Jean and Peter’s story has come to a close; To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, the first movie, is one of my favorites, and bitch though I might about them, the kinda grew on me… like an innocent plant, at first, but then like a fungus. Not a parasitic fungus, just not mutualistic, either… kind of like a commensal.
Maybe I should stop with the biology similes.

That is, until a PR nightmare throws the newest member of the media team, who also just so happens to be the daughter of the new owner, right into his arms. Kristoff and Anna can’t even stand the interviews they have to do together… how on earth are they going to fix this mess? Hockey!AU.
[Chapter Index]
Where To Read: [AO3]
Notes: Kristoff “god is testing me” Bjorgman, ladies and gentlemen!
Enjoy!
God damn it, what was that annoying ringing and why wouldn’t it stop?!
Anna blindly slapped at her bed, groaning loudly when her fingers grazed over the offending, vibrating device. She could tell by the sun peeking through the one window in her room that it was barely morning, and was immediately annoyed that anyone would call her this early on her day off . Glaring at the screen as she rolled over, she tried to make out the name blurred from her still focusing eyes before quickly giving up and just answering. “Hello?”
“You are dating him?”
“Elsa?”
“Anna,” her voice was low and hushed, as if she was trying to prevent anyone from overhearing. “You said you weren’t sleeping with him.”
“M’not,” she grumbled, sitting up against the pillows as she started to wake up.
“ My favorite place to be ? With his hands … It sure seems like you are.” Anna could practically see the panic in her sister’s eyes and the wringing of her hands together as she paced the floor.
She sighed and rubbed a knuckle against her eye, trying her best to form a coherent sentence. “Els.” A yawn. “S’not what y’think.” Anna paused for a moment. She didn’t know if she was allowed to disclose the truth to anyone. But… it was Elsa. She wouldn’t say anything, right? “It’s…” she bit her lip when she heard her sister practically whining into the phone. “It’s just for PR.”
“ What ?”
Rubbing a hand across her face, Anna blew out a breath. “I mean like, don’t tell anyone…” Elsa hummed at her, frustration evident. “We’re pretending. For his… y’know. To help with the Hans thing.”
She heard some shuffling in the background and could only assume that Elsa was trying to find a place to sit. They both stayed silent for a moment, hoping the other one would talk first.
Anna sighed. “It’s a good idea, and we’ve got it all sorted. Just…” her fingers rose to her mouth, biting at a nail. “I don’t know if I should tell our father the truth or not.” She almost relaxed when she heard her sister sigh, too, as if she was taking some of the weight of it all away from Anna.
“I’ll talk to him. He’s not going to be happy.”
“I mean,” she bolted up, leaning forward in bed. “Should I tell him the truth or like… just tell him I was so moved by his defending me that… now we are dating…. or… like, just tell him that this is the best way to clear up the reputation of his player? Or try to convince him I’m really happy or…”
“Stop, Anna,” but it wasn’t mean or frustrated, as she laughed as well. “You’ve got enough going on there. I’ll… call Gerda and then talk to him, okay?”
Anna had never been more grateful for her sister. “Thank you,” she sighed, flopping backwards against her pillows.
“So…” She heard some mischief lacing her sisters’ words. “Do you want to sleep with him?”
Her cheeks flushed and she let out the most unconvincing “Uh… sh-yeah right, you’re crazy!” before deciding to try and turn the conversation onto Elsa. “But there is this girl who works here… Seems your type —“
“Goodbye, Anna!”
She hung up with a laugh, knowing any talk of any sort of dating made Elsa run away, embarrassed. It was then that she was able to look at her phone properly, the overwhelming notifications smacking her in the face. A voicemail from Honey, simply a Nice job, good caption, they’re eating it up, about a thousand instagram likes, and a couple hundred comments and new followers.
And one text from Sven, that only said WHAT?!
-
Kristoff was already embarrassed before he walked into the rink. Aware of how quickly word traveled around here, the entire team was bound to already know that he and Anna were now dating .
His suspicions were quickly confirmed when Sven tackled him and threw him to the ground, shoving his phone in his face. “What the fuck?! What the actual fuck !!!!” Kristoff groaned as he looked up, her instagram feed too close for him to really make out much detail. “Who allowed this? Did you guys fuck?! Did you take her to the back of your truck and —“
“Stop it, Jesus Christ,” Kristoff shouldered his captain onto the floor and moved to stand up. “I punched one asshole, I’ll punch another.”
Sven flipped onto his back with a laugh and opened the picture again. “Dude. Look at her face. She’s obsessed with you.”
Dating. They were dating. He wasn’t even sure he could tell Sven the truth, so he put on his best act and shrugged. “I’m… obsessed ,” ew, “with her, too. She’s…” Amazing. “Really, really great.” At least that wasn’t a total lie.
“I knew it,” he laughed, scurrying up to his feet. “Didn’t I tell you? You guys were going to get together.” He clenched his hands by his stomach and shouted. “I felt it in my gut!!! Dude!!!”
“You said we were going to fuck .” He felt gross just saying it. He wasn’t going to be crass about any of this. He wasn’t.
“Same difference.”
“No.” Kristoff really didn’t want to be an asshole, but he needed to set a boundary here. “Look… I don’t want you talking about her like that. Not anymore. She’s…” was saying she was his too much, or a line he shouldn’t cross? “We’re dating . Not fucking.”
Sven immediately got serious. “Yeah, man. I got it.” But his smile came back quickly. “I’m really happy for you, man.” His palm smacked against Kristoff’s cheek, and he really thought he had to convince Sven to stop doing this. “‘Bout time you stopped being so serious about your already successful career and started letting yourself live a little.”
Kristoff felt like he had been punched in the stomach.
He’s never lied to Sven before.
Hours of practice, a long, long shower, and one phone call to confirm her address later, Kristoff’s truck was parked outside of Anna’s building. He shot her a quick text to alert her that he was there, but after five minutes of no response, he sighed and got out of his truck, resigned to doing this the old-fashioned way. Pausing for a moment to check the passenger seat of his truck, Kristoff shook out his worry and started climbing the steps to her third-floor apartment. After confirming the number, he knocked on the door.
He heard a crash and a curse come from behind it and couldn’t help but laugh. But when the door swung open and he got a good look at her, her soft pink bra out and visible as she was still sliding one arm through her dress, Kristoff felt his whole body tense.
“Can I help —“ she finally looked up at him, hair pins cleaned between her teeth, clearly annoyed that someone was interrupting her. “Oh. You’re early.”
Kristoff swallowed the thick lump in his throat as she reached up to put a pin in her hair. “Do you always answer the door half naked?”
Anna simply shrugged. “Maybe one day a man will see my bra and decide to date me.” She turned, ignoring his reaction, and gestured at the back of her dress. “Can you zip me up?”
Letting out an awkward laugh, Kristoff reached forward to grab at the small zipper of her dress, tugging it gently until it started to move. “Careful. I think that bra is marriage material.” He tried his best to ignore how her back curved, how soft and pale her skin was beneath the smooth rose velvet of her dress, and he definitely wasn’t thinking about kissing every freckle on her small shoulders, the ones exposed by the sleeves that only rose to the middle of her upper arms.
She turned quickly, ripping his fingers away from her zipper, and let out a laugh as she tugged at the neckline of her dress. Pulling it away and peering down with an inquisitive smile on her lips, Anna shrugged. “And this isn’t even my nicest one.” Dropping her dress back down, she continued “If you think this is wedding material…” She hummed and ticked a finger up under his chin. “Then you’ve got something to look forward to, honey .”
Kristoff stared after her as she disappeared back into the apartment, his mouth dry. He stood in the doorway, feet stuck to the ground, until she peered back around the corner. “You can come in, you know.”
He stepped forward, flushed, and shut the door behind him.
“Do you want anything?” Her voice echoed a little, and he could guess that she was in the bathroom. “I’m almost ready but, um… There’s… water or wine!”
He frowned, staying perfectly still in the middle of her living room. “I’m okay.”
Kristoff wasn’t sure what he imagined for Anna’s home, but it really wasn’t this. Small and boxy, nothing on the walls, just a small loveseat, a bookshelf, and a little television hung across the way. His eyes took a risky glance down the hall into the open door, smiling when he could see some clothes strewn about. Had she actually… worried about how she looked tonight?
Taking a second to look at himself, Kristoff sighed. He was used to wearing suits, but he didn’t feel like this was a suit-worthy moment, so he had dressed in a nice pair of dark jeans and a button down, with a tie thrown in the back of his truck just in case. He was almost worried he’d look stupid next to her in that pretty, flowy dress.
When she emerged, her hair twisted up into some sort of intricate low bun, he really felt like he should have dressed up nicer. Until she started crudely adjusting the top half of her dress as if to make her chest look even more delectable. Then Kristoff felt his throat tighten. He may not have been a religious man, but at that moment he knew there was definitely some asshole sitting up there, testing him.
He snapped out of it when she pushed her chest up again and frowned, mumbling something about definitely coming home with a bra full of crumbs.
“You always this lady-like?”
Anna’s head popped up with a grin on her lips. “Only for you, babe.” She was going to kill him one of these days.
“So many pet names,” he laughed, trying to hide how much they got to him. How much they made him want to put his mouth on her, made him want to pull those names from her lips as he bit his way down her exposed throat to the swell of her breast.
She seemed to falter for a moment, a frown peeking out. “Is… that okay? I’m sorry… I… Was just teasing and,” her hands were twisting together in front of her hips. “If I’m going too far just let me know? I tend to… make jokes when I’m… I’m awkward.”
Oh no, no, no . He didn’t want to do that .
“They’re… they’re fine!” He started, his voice cracking slightly. “I just… wasn’t expecting it?”
It was small, but a smile returned to her lips. Thank god.
“You look… um… nice dress.”
Anna twisted her hips a little to make the skirt flare out as she grinned. It was almost too cute for him to handle. “I think I might’ve overdressed. But I like it.”
“Yeah it’s… it’s good.” He coughed when she stepped closer, and gestured at himself. “I have… a tie. Uh, in the truck. If you think…”
He watched as she grabbed her purse and smiled, hooking it over her elbow before she moved towards the door. “You look perfect, Kristoff.”
That was good enough for him.
Anna looked towards the door with a small tilt of her head, asking him silently if they should go, and he cleared his throat before nodding, heading out of the apartment and down to his truck. Kristoff felt his nerves running wild, higher than they had ever been for a real first date, and he wasn’t sure exactly what to make of it. He quickly got ahead of her to open the passenger side door, smiling when she moved to get into the truck.
But she paused, and he remembered the stupid thing he had done.
She reached in quickly, snatching up the bouquet he had gotten her.
“You got me flowers?”
Kristoff stammered, blush high on his cheeks. “Well… I mean… It’s a date, right? That’s… what you do?”
Her small fingers brushed delicately over the petals, flattening out a few that had been crushed from laying on their side on his seat. “Daisies?”
“Well I thought roses were too, you know…” he flopped his hands back and forth. “And when the florist asked what they were for, I said a first date… and she suggested these? I guess… they’re… good for… that kind of thing.”
God why couldn’t he shut up?
The soft, genuine smile on her lips was worth it, though.
She climbed into the cab, eyes locked on the flowers as he shut the door and moved to the other side, hopping up and in with ease. He started the engine, pulled at his collar and sighed. “So… I guess Gerda already alerted the tabloids, so they’ll probably be at the restaurant when we get there.”
If he didn’t know any better, he could’ve sworn her smile fell, just a little.
“Okay,” she set the flowers into her lap, her eyes moving to meet his. “Ready?”
He supposed he had to be.

Previous Chapter/Next Chapter
It was a date. He said it was a date. As much as that excited her, she didn’t want to jump into something too soon. Especially with her health. And when she explained that to Kristoff, he completely understood. Which only made her like him more.
So, they were dating. But there wasn’t a label. Anna couldn’t bear saying she had a boyfriend during this trying time of her life.
But, even though Kristoff wasn’t her “boyfriend” didn’t mean she didn’t start popping by the coffee shop on the regular to pay him little visits. It was always the same excuse—that Elsa wanted coffee. They both knew it was a lie, but it gave her a reason to go up to the register.  If she stuck around too long, sometimes Kristoff would take the coffee. S’mores lattes weren’t his favorite, but he didn’t seem to mind.
Anna had never used Snapchat—she’d thought it was silly to send pictures all the time—but after Kristoff asked if she had one, she downloaded the app in an instant. And, quickly, that became the way she kept him updated throughout her day. Kristoff’s snap stories were very sophisticated. They didn’t usually feature his face, but mostly the coffee shop with different work-day filters. Lots of snaps of Sven being excited when Kristoff arrived home from work. On the occasion, there would be a Sven shaming story if the dog tore something up while he was away.
But the private snaps he sent to her privately were much goofier. And she appreciated that. Anna liked that he was so real with her. So himself. Maybe he put on a front for those who viewed his stories, but not her.
Kristoff sent her a picture of a large spill of coffee all over the floor of the shop with a caption of “why” and that’s all. Anna couldn’t help but giggle from her seat in the hospital lounge. At least the chairs she sat in during chemo were comfortable. And with Kristoff sending her entertaining snaps, it made her day just a little better. He always had a way of cheering her up no matter how miserable she may have felt.
She sent him a selfie of her grimacing and looking away from the camera with the caption “at least it’s not vomit this time”. Did she keep bringing it up? Yes. She was mortified about the whole situation, so making fun of it at least let Anna live down her shame.
His response was quick. A selfie of him grinning stupidly with “i’ll clean up your vomit anytime” attached. She snorted at that. Why was he sweet and disgusting at the same time? But she appreciated it nonetheless.
Dr. Mattias entered the room with his usual smile, preventing Anna from returning a snap. She’d have to wait and send him a response later.
He greeted her as usual before sitting in the chair across from her. “So, Anna, how are you today?”
“Pretty good, considering,” she replied with a smile. She couldn’t help but feel a bit giddy. It was probably a bit obvious to Dr. Mattias that she was bubblier than usual. But that was okay. Everyone was allowed a good day. Especially when on chemo.
“That’s great,” he said, clicking his pen. “How are your symptoms?”
Her mind flashed to her date with Kristoff. Pursing her lips, she glanced away. “Um, I was wondering about physical therapy?”
Dr. Mattias seemed stunned at her words, his brows raising, but he answered her anyway.
                                                     o~o~o~o
Anna sent Kristoff a snap video of her walking on the sidewalk downtown towards the coffee shop. In response she got a blurry image of his face with “oh shit” across it. She couldn’t help but giggle. He really was funny, even if he didn’t want to admit it. She could tell Kristoff was jittery and had a rough exterior… but she planned on cracking it down.
The bell rang above her head as she entered the door. There was a new barista there she didn’t recognize. The girl had raven hair and a darker complexion… she actually looked a lot like Ryder. Maybe, they were related?
Kristoff smirked when he saw her. “Why hello there, how can I help you today?”
“Hello, Christopher,” she cooed.
Rolling his eyes, he shook his head. “Oaken ordered me a new name tag, will you stop harassing me?”
“No.”
He snorted. “So, a s’mores latte for Elsa? ” Kristoff smirked, a knowing glint in those honey-brown eyes.
Anna shook her head. “Nope! I’m having a cheat day. It’s getting chillier so I can reasonably get a hot cocoa. For Anna. ”
“Well, well, well,” he grinned. “I finally get to write your name on a cup today.”
Humming in response, Anna pulled out her wallet. “I guess it’s just your lucky day,” she teased with a grin before handing him her card.
“Yeah, sure. It’s a true blessing when I get to write ‘Anna’ on a cup. As if it isn’t a common name.”
“Bet you think about me every time another Anna comes in.”
Kristoff’s cheeks flushed at that. “Shut up,” he pouted as he snatched a cup from the counter and headed over to the machine.
Giggling, Anna moved to the side as the girl took the next customer. Her name tag said “Honeymaren.” Jeez, no wonder the owner couldn’t order the correct names. Did anyone here have a basic name? She was a little jealous of the uniqueness of it. Perhaps how her name was pronounced was a little different, but still.
Kristoff returned with her cup and handed her the credit card as well. “Here’s your special cheat day drink, feisty pants. Glad you went with a caffeine free option.”
“Well, I can’t get too crazy.”
He laughed.
“When do you get off?” she asked, smiling slightly.
Shoulders slumping, he sighed. “Still got a few hours today.  How about we meet up tomorrow? I have some work on the job site first, but I can see you afterwards?”
Anna sipped at her hot cocoa with a smile. “I’d like that.”
“I’ll text you?”
“Yeah,” she said with a smile.
                                                 o~o~o~o
It didn’t take long after she left the coffee shop for the snapchats to start again. It was nice that she received so much attention from him. Kristoff really knew how to make a girl feel special.
When Anna made it home, she was utterly exhausted. She crashed on the couch, finishing off her hot cocoa with a sigh. Setting the cup on the side table, she flopped back on the cushions.
“Hey, long day?”
Anna sighed when she saw Elsa rounding the couch to sit on the arm with a smile. “You don’t know the half of it,” she murmured.
Elsa smiled at that. “I see an Arendelle Roasts cup, so someone paid Kristoff a visit.”
“I did…”
Her sister just gave a knowing smirk before looking away. “Sooo, how was chemo today?”
“Same as usual… Miserable.”
“Uh huh.”
“Well, it was a little better actually. Kristoff convinced me to get a Snapchat, and we’ve been snapping each other a lot. He sends me some really funny stuff. I dunno, it was just a nice positive during treatment today. Does that seem silly?”
Elsa was smiling at her. “Whatever makes you happy, Anna. Just a little pick-me-up is better than nothing,” she paused, “but we both know Kristoff is a little more than that.”
The dreamy sigh that left her lips was a bit embarrassing. She couldn’t help it though. Kristoff made her mushy inside. He really did make her happy. It was a nice change of pace.
“He’s really great, Elsa. Why couldn’t I have found him sooner? Ugh, I wish he’d gone to academy… maybe I’d never been with Hans.”
Her sister gave a small shrug. “Life works in funny ways. This was just the right time to meet him.”
Humming, she nodded. “Maybe, you’re right. He did say he used to be kinda grumpy.”
Anna heard a faint laugh before slowly nodding off to sleep.
                                                 o~o~o~o
Kristoff had asked her to meet him in the park the following day. Anna wore appropriate fall clothing. She was so excited that it was finally cooling down. The heat was so exhausting, especially while she was on chemo. The treatments made her feel so weak and heat did not mix well with her symptoms. It sucked. A lot.
Fall would be a calmer time. She hadn’t yet experienced chemo with the cold… she wasn’t exactly looking forward to it. But her light jacket over her purple dress and dark leggings was comfortable and worked well with the temperature. She was a little disappointed she wouldn’t be able to participate in the pumpkin spice craze as it began due to her ban on caffeine. But it would just make it all the worthwhile for next fall.
Anna sat on a swing that overlooked the pond. Ducks waddled by, making her giggle at their quacking. There were a few girls sitting on a picnic blanket nearby… but Anna chose to ignore their frequent glances in her direction. It wasn’t exactly a poor you stare, so Anna wasn’t quite sure what to make of it. So, she stared at her phone and ignored them the best she could.
Only when Kristoff told her that he’d arrived did she look up from her spot. She waved at him when she saw him crossing the browning grass. He wore a clean green flannel, but the skin beneath glistened. His hairline was damp as well. Clearly, he’d gotten a bit sweaty while working on the site. It was strange… the sudden spike in her libido at seeing him like this despite her sex drive practically being nonexistant since her first few months of chemo. Sure, she’d had thoughts about Kristoff before, but not like this. She hadn’t felt desire for someone in so long. And Kristoff definitely triggered such a reaction from her.
But how was she to help it? His shaggy blonde hair, tanned skin in sight where his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, rugged torn jeans, and work boots… it suited him. And Anna couldn’t get enough of it. As much as she loved Kristoff in a cream colored apron and a button up, this just did many different things to her.
Kristoff returned her gesture, waving a large palm in her direction as he sped up to reach her. There was a grin etched along his lips as he approached. When he came to sit with her on the swing, it seemed entirely natural for him to place an arm on the back of the bench behind her as Anna snuggled into his side.
“Hey, how was work today?” she asked, smiling up at him.
Giving a lopsided shrug, he hummed. “Nothing too exciting. Building, measuring, hammering--the usual,” he glanced down at her. “How was yours?”
“Laid around, puked some, drank a smoothie because I can’t chew--the usual,” she laughed bitterly.
“It’ll get better, you know.”
Sighing, she nodded and leaned her head against his chest. “I know.”
“Did you talk to your doctor about your symptoms?”
Anna sighed. “Yes, we decided on some physical therapy options to help blood flow to my fingers. I just--God, Kristoff, I can’t wait until this is over. I mean, I know it’ll never be over over. Dr. Mattias already told me I’ll have to go back for regular number checks the rest of my life once in remission. But there can’t help but be that part of me that wonders if there’s more they don’t know about. If I’ll never actually be in remission and--oh, jeez. I’m sorry, Kristoff, I’m totally being negative and rambling.”
Kristoff’s palm patted her upper arm lightly. His eyes seemed so sad when he regarded her. “Hey, hey, it’s alright. You’re free to rant as you please. Don’t stop for my sake.”
She couldn’t help but smile. “Thank you. I don’t mean to just--talk about myself so much.”
“I like hearing you talk about yourself.”
She snorted. “Don’t lie.”
Cocking a brow, he smirked. “But I do. I really admire you, ya know? The way despite how everything you’re going through, you manage to keep a smile on your face.”
Anna felt herself swoon at the compliment and hoped her reaction didn’t show too much on her face. Even though she trusted Kristoff, she had jumped into a relationship too quickly before, so she didn’t want the blonde to know how crazy she was about him. How much his compliments meant to her. Even the small ones.
She responded by snuggling closer to his chest, pressing her body against his own. God, he was so much bigger than her. Anna knew she was scrawny from treatments… would he still be this broad compared to her even when her body returned to a healthier weight? She glanced down between them, noticing his hand sitting on his own thigh. Without a second thought, she grabbed his palm with both of her own. Anna idly played with his fingers, really noticed the contrast with her own. His hands were so healthy while hers… were so boney. And tiny. And weak. Her fingers ached just trying to squeeze his.
Kristoff chuckled, turning his palm over and opening his fingers to her. Anna’s lips twitched and she gazed up at him as she intertwined her fingers with his. Humming, she relaxed into his touch as his thumb gently rubbed the back of her hand. The touch actually sent a warming sensation to the tips of her tingly fingers.
It was nice being like this. To just enjoy one another’s company. She was sure she would find something else to talk about, but for now… this was enough.
As she opened her mouth to speak, she looked up at him. Only to see him scowling off in another direction. His brows were pinched and a tight frown was etched along his lips. Anna followed his line of sight to see who he was glaring so harshly at. It was the two girls who had been staring at her earlier. They were giggling and whispering at their phones until they looked up and saw Kristoff’s eyes on them. The smiles on their faces quickly fell as they both glanced around uncomfortably, each looking very ashamed. Kristoff didn’t stop his squint until the two girls packed their things and quickly left.
The entire encounter didn’t last but five minutes, but it felt like an eternity to Anna. What had they done to make Kristoff so angry?
“W-What was that all about?”
His face relaxed as they watched him leave, eyes softening when he gazed at her. “Sorry, they were taking pictures.”
Anna felt her cheeks flush as she glanced down at her lap. “Oh…” There was a beat of silence for a moment as she gathered her thoughts. “Well, I now know what you meant when you said you used to be grumpy. That glare could scare off anyone.”
Snorting, he shook his head. “Sorry… People like that just piss me off. It’s not your fault that you’re going through this. You aren’t a side-show attraction.”
“You’re amazing, you know that?”
“No,” he shook his head. “It’s you that’s amazing.”
She giggled at that before tapping on her knee and pursing her lips. “I… I-I need to know, Kristoff. What did you really think of me when you first saw me?”
“That you’re beautiful. You have the most amazing eyes I’ve ever seen, and your freckles are adorable.”
“That’s it? You didn’t think ‘oh, poor thing she looks sick?’”
He shook his head. “You’ll never look like that to me, Anna.”
Her lips twitched. “Yeah? What will I look like?”
“A fighter.”
Anna’s eyes went wide. Her cheeks flushed as she glanced away. “That’s just cheesy, and you know it.”
“But it’s true,” he said with a grin.
“You think I’m really a fighter?”
“Yeah, like a warrior who has a battle to win. And I have no doubts you’ll see this fight to the end. Don’t you believe so?”
Anna squeezed his palm. “As long as I have you.”

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by Broke and the Bookish.
This book list made me realize that not a lot of books have outright autumn themed covers. Summer has a lot of books with pretty summer covers and even winter gets some books but not really fall.
  #gallery-0-9 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-9 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 20%; } #gallery-0-9 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-9 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Some Quiet Place by Kelsey Sutton
This book was very strange but one of my favorite books of 2014. It was about a girl that sees emotions as if they are people. For example, the main character’s friend is dying so she sees Courage hovering around her. However they don’t touch her at all–meaning she can’t feel. From what I remember the tone is very dark and at some points even genuinely scary. I loved it.
The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
How could I not include The Scorpio Races which happen in November? This book was extremely touching to me which is weird because it’s about a horse race that happens on the island of Thisby. On Thisby, there are water horses or capaill uisce that are very dangerous and man eating. While racing them, they might give in to their almost irresistible urge to go back to the sea, dragging their rider with them. And that’s just the race. They could easily kill anyone attempting to train them. Enter Puck, a girl who entered to save her family. Not only is she a girl–which is very unusual and looked down upon–she’s also riding on her own, regular horse.
Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero
This is actually the book I’m reading now and I think it has amazing Halloween vibes. It’s like a re imagining of Scooby Doo or the Hardy Boys but if the group had to come back to a case that was too big for them as kids.
Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie
Mysteries scream fall at me. Literally, it’s quite annoying. Just kidding! I haven’t read anything by Agatha Christie and I really think I should everyone should. She’s the queen of mystery. If you’re not aware, this book even has a movie coming out in November which looks amazing so you can have it all read before then.
The Lie Tree by Frances Hardinge
Apples are fall-ish, right? Not only that, but I’ve come to expect a dark tone from Hardinge’s writing. I haven’t read this one yet but I have the physical copy of it so I want to definitely read this story soon!
  #gallery-0-10 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-10 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 20%; } #gallery-0-10 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-10 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Three Dark Crowns by Kedare Blake
I feel like I’ve seen this book everywhere since the release of the sequel, One Dark Crown, and I’ve heard nothing but good things. I read Anna Dressed In Blood by Kendare Blake probably back in 2011/12 (for some reason my Goodreads doesn’t have a date) and LOVED it so I’ll probably have to read this one.
Bird Box by Josh Malerman
This is a horror novel I read at the end of summer/going into fall in 2014. It was pretty scary and intense and has kept with me since. I’ve recommended it quite a few times.
The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan
This book was a zombie book that came out right at the peak of The Walking Dead. It’s a great series in general, very creepy but like TWD, a lot more about the people than the zombies. I might need to do a re-read because remembering these books is awesome.
The Butterfly Garden by Dot Hutchison
This book was very good. I loved how the story started at the end and the victim revealed what happened in little chunks. However, even though it was revealed slowly, it didn’t drag on at all.
All The Crooked Saints by Maggie Stiefvater
This book comes out TODAY. To. Day. It is my most anticipated read of this year and I am going to get it today. I don’t even really care what it’s about (lie. I do but, like, I’ll read anything by Maggie Stiefvater.)
Let’s Chat! Have you read any of these books and what did you think? Do you want to read any of these beauty’s? Tell me about some of your fall reads!
