Ok I love this. Might be a long answer.

I don't know how much input he had into Compose Coffee's storyboard for this - though love that they got the memo 😂 - but the others are all his work and vision (as far as I know)

Simple answer:

It's two men in a bed in the only way he was able to show that. And in Slow Dancing, the queer cast of the MV all become Tae. He is them, they are him. It all feels queer coded to me.

Complicated answer:

I went to film school, right, 8000 years ago cos I'm ancient, and mirrors were always like shorthand for opposing ideas inside one person. Being at war with yourself or a hidden side. A mirror suggests another side of yourself or a visual representation of the duality of dark and light, good vs evil, real vs fake.

Clones are basically mirrors but less insular if that makes sense. What we see in a mirror is usually a thing we do alone. Clones are a more outward expression of duality, I think? It feels like look at me. There's more to me than the single dimension you're asked to believe.

So I think that's about sexuality, the face he has to present to the public vs the reality, but I wonder if there's another layer sitting alongside...

Promise this is related but I've been playing In The Seom recently. So cute but I find it funny how the mainstream characterisation is so limiting? JK is a gym bunny. Suga is tired. RM is studious. Hobi is happy all the time. V is dreamy and childlike. I get that a little game can't be an in depth character study but it's not just the game. Run BTS captions are rigid about these archetypes even when their behaviour opposes them. There's like a rigid set of rules they adhere to and key stories that get trotted out to support a narrative. (In this narrative, he's V who, to me, is different to our real Taehyung.)

I feel like this must be restricting for all of them (and they've kicked out against it since hiatus, I think, explicitly in the case of Joonie, Yoongi and JK) but especially for a person like Tae who is smarter, kinder, funnier, more knowledgeable and savvy and determined than they'd have us believe. He is not permanently head in the clouds, he's actually quite strong and firm in his convictions. He believes in things and goes to bat for them.

I think about him saying, in that last group live, "I can look after myself when I need to." Like fully let's be real now. Bear emoji is cute but I'm a grown man.

I think this clone imagery could have a secondary meaning of I am more than just V. Here's Taehyung. See me now?

He wanted to know everything, so when you decided to perform Aarthi, Nobunaga was the first one to want to witness. Everyone retreat away the moment you begin performing, afraid of getting burned, except for Nobunaga.

He was actually smirking, unbothered by how close the fire got to him.

Hideyoshi Toyotomi.

Hideyoshi was the one to panic the most, telling everyone to move away so that they wouldn’t get burned. He will desperately try to stop you, he doesn’t want the whole castle to burn.

As to not make you sad and to continue the performance, he will suggest doing it in your place, since he was taller and had better control of his strength.

Mitsuhide Akechi.

Mitsuhide will have a wide grin on his face as he observes the others trying to escape the fire, finding everything entertaining, specially how oblivious you seemed about your surroundings.

To make it funnier, mitsuhide will suggest that he could also perform it, only to purposely scare the others with his performance.

Uesugi-Takeda alliance.

Kenshin Uesugi.

Kenshin will like the idea of a festival, and will want the whole town to celebrate it. He will make it so that everything resembles the festival. Once you begin to perform the aarthi, kenshin will actually get excited.

Seeing how close the fire was getting, he didn’t bother move away. In fact, he felt very energetic while dodging you.

''Our last rat is Kim Ming.'' Seungkwan announces, pointing at the screen next to him.

The members make 'aw' noises upon seeing Ming's profile and picture of her in the mouse outfit.

Seungkwan interrupts them. ''She might look cute, but she is the most dangerous rat of them all!'' He tells the members, making a lot of hand gestures.

''How come?'' Joshua asks, going along with Seungkwan.

''She will lure you in with her charms and then BOOM!'' He yells, making some of the members flinch by the sudden loudness.

''She'll eat you.'' He finishes.

Dokyeom gets up from his chair. ''EAT US? We have to stop her!''

''No, how come someone so cute, can be so dangerous?'' Jeonghan says.

Seungkwan gets closer to Jeonghan. ''See! That's her trap! People don't believe someone like her can be a mean rat, but once they get closer to her, she takes them!'' He tells his older member, as dramatic as possible.

''Then we have to send someone after her who can resist her charms!'' Mingyu orders.

All the members look at each other and a silence falls.

[ERROR FOUND]

Dino breaks the silence. ''I can do it!''

[Brave Maknae]

''She'll kill you first.'' Seungkwan denies Dino. The members laugh at the quick reaction, while Dino just accepts it.

Vernon comes up with a strategy. ''We just have to get her to run, then we can catch her.'' The members agree.

''Yeah, she's not a very good runner.'' Mingyu says.

''But she's smart, so she'll have a good hiding spot.'' Coups argued him.

Seungkwan finishes up Ming's profile. ''She'll be the one to look out for.''

While the busters decided on nicknames and strategies to catch the rats, the rats went over their abilities.

''We need to set the rats' abilities.'' Wonwoo started.

Hoshi chimed in. ''We have to divide the skills and...'' He got interrupted by Jun imitating the sound that a rat makes.

''There's the mass exodus which you can take everyone out of the jail.'' Woozi reminded.

''And three long distance escapes.'' Wonwoo added.

''And summoning!'' ''Summoning!'' Ming and Jun said at the same time, they gave each other a high five.

Hoshi also explained that after an hour has passed, the rats will be able to use their special abilities.

''Let's all lie.'' Hoshi laughed.

The five members joked around with the secret abilities, making each other laugh.

''The 96s are really good at it, actually?'' Hoshi stated.

Ming stopped laughing and looked at Hoshi, with a very (jokingly) serious look on her face.

[Ming-noona]

Woozi chuckled. ''Come to think of it, the 96s didn't get to gather well.'' He continued.

''What is the year of mouse? Kyungja-yeon?'' Hoshi asked the staff in front of them.

''Hey! If you're gonna tease me, at least do it well.'' Ming countered.

The 96-liners laughed at her reaction. Hoshi clinged onto Ming, finding her facial expressions hilarious.

She turned to the staff. ''Why am I here actually? Or did my age change without my knowledge?'' She asked.

''We just needed a fifth rat.'' Their producer said, casually.

''And their first thought went to you.'' Jun added, although it came out funnier than he intended to.

Ming turned her body to look at Jun. ''Are you saying I look like a rat?''

He waved his hands in front of him and shook his head. ''I don't think you look like a rat, but the staff obviously do.'' He clarified, again much funnier than he intended.

After everyone calmed down a bit from the laughing, Hoshi suggested a team name.

''I know what suits for rat. How about 'No Kidding' for our name?'' He suggested.

The members agreed and they did a little greeting, saying the name in sync.

Then, they heard one of the staff members announce through the microphone that the rats should go find their hiding spots.

The other rats started running, while Ming just slowly walked. ''Why are they running already? We have enough time to hide.'' Ming complains.

''Where should I hide?'' Ming said to herself, while looking around the area, she had been walking for a few minutes already.

She looked at the big white veils that were used as covers, so the products of the place they used were protected.

She slowly looks at her camera man. She points at the white veil, as to say ''Should we get under here?''

He simply shrugged and Ming pulled the veil up for him to go in first. Ming quickly made herself comfortable and sat herself down, next to one of the pallets under the veil and she leaned her head against it.

''Now we just wait.'' She said to the camera.

A few minutes passed by and her camera man informed her that the game had officially started, meaning the mousebusters had started looking for them.

Suddenly, she heard people close by her hiding spot.

''Do you want to search here then? I will stay here, they may come out.'' She recognized Vernon's voice.

''I will find them quick. Stay here.'' The other voice was Chan.

She motioned for the camera man to be quiet, but after a while Vernon also went away.

She sighed. ''Wow, I can't believe they didn't look under here. They're idiots.'' She told the camera.

[Tough Maknae Love]

Ming honestly didn't have any plans to move, she realized the members weren't going to look under the veils and she wasn't in the mood to be chased by them.

Her thoughts were interrupted when she heard Jeonghan speaking. ''It seems hard to find them but we should try,'' She smirked at Jeonghan's words. ''I think they went this way earlier...'' Jeonghan stopped talking. He had stopped right in front of Ming's hiding place.

''THERE'S THE RAT!'' He yelled, loudly. Ming panicked thinking she got caught, but was confused as she heard Jeonghan running away.

She took a couple of big breaths, visibly relieved that it was another rat.

''Woah, oppa, I really thought they had found me already.'' She said to the camera man. He chuckled at the girl's words.

Ming and the camera man had a hard time holding in their laughter. They would hear the other members close to their hiding spot, running and yelling trying to catch one of the rats.

She had a proud look on her face when she heard the busters talk about how they failed to catch Jun. She held up a thumbs up to the camera.

[Proud Rat]

During the first 10 minutes of the game, she had heard a lot of commotion outside. When she heard more people running outside of their hiding spot, she smirked at her camera man.

''Oppa, you must be happy you're with me, right?'' She teased him, referring to the fact that they had just been chilling, instead of running.

He nodded. ''I'm very happy, Ming-ssi.''

Back at the headquarters of the busters, they felt frustrated.

''I think Hoshi-hyung an Ming-ah are hiding somewhere where nobody knows about.'' Chan said.

Mingyu sighed. ''I really thought I would catch Ming, but I don't think that's going to happen.''

[Outsmarted by a rat]

''I think the game has started again.'' Ming's camera man said to her. She nodded at his words, she thought about something.

''Can I take a nap?'' She asked him.

He shrugged his shoulder. ''Because I have a photoshoot later and I need some beauty sleep.'' She explained to him.

He nodded. ''If there's danger, you can just wake me up.'' She told him.

He nodded again, slightly laughing, finding the girl's antics funny.

Ming put her head on one of the pallets and closed her eyes.

While Ming was doing her beauty sleep, Woozi had used his summoning skill for the second time, sending the busters back to their headquarters.

''Hoshi and Ming are still not here.'' Minghao exclaimed in frustration.

''Where is Ming?'' Chan asked the members. ''Has anyone seen Ming?'' The camera cuts to Ming sleeping in her hiding spot.

[Sleeping Beauty Found]

''Ming and Hoshi must be hiding somewhere deep.'' Jeonghan noted.

The members agreed. ''I want to catch Ming and Hoshi.'' Chan said, full of determination.

Chapter One

“Okay girls, turn over your papers now.”

The whole hall fills with the sound of rustling paper as sixty of us flip over English Paper One in tandem. I take a deep, shuddering breath and read the first question. 

SECTION 1. TEXT 1. This text is taken from An Irishwoman’s Diary by journalist, Lara Marlowe. She was Irish Times correspondent in Beirut and Paris, and is now based in Washington. Here she responds to an article critical of cats written by her friend and fellow journalist, Rosita Boland.

I read the article. Then I read the questions. Then I read them again. From my seat at the back of the hall I glance up the aisles of students, most of them already writing something. I hold my pen over the blank, lined page in front of me, my hand trembling slightly as I write down Question 1. Then I hesitate, I try really hard not to panic and then I read all the questions one more time. 

Claire, who is one aisle over and three desks from the front, turns around slowly, knowing she’s not allowed to look at anybody else but does anyway, checking first that the examiner isn’t watching her. Her eyes widen to saucers and she shakes her head at me in disbelief. “What the hell is this?” She mouths, and I shrug. We’ve already talked about this. Neither of us is going to do well in our Leaving Cert, it’s not just speculation. It’s fact, and I’ve never been more convinced of it now as I sit in this hot room, day one, paper one, question one, and I can’t even think of how to begin. 

It had all seemed a lot funnier a few weeks ago when we agreed upon how ill prepared we were. Claire has never done well academically, in fact I’m almost sure she’s got undiagnosed dyslexia, even though her proud-as-punch parents refused to have her assessed even after the guidance counsellor practically begged them to. Meanwhile I spent the whole year in the art room working on my portfolio instead of joining the after school study group, mostly because Kelly was doing it, but also because I haven’t been in the headspace. It’s been a strange year. Now though, on this bright June morning with a three and a half hour exam ahead of us, nothing seems that funny anymore and the choices I’ve made throughout the year seem to be nipping at my heels. The terror in Claire’s eyes illustrates exactly how I feel. I’m not sure how we’re going to get through nine more of these truly harrowing papers, but I know that I have to try. I put my head down and start writing something – anything at all. 

When we finally spill out of the hall that afternoon I feel like my body is made from rubber. Claire and I console one another outside the doors, arms around one another in defeat. 

“That was awful.” She complains. “I’ve failed.”

“You haven’t failed. Nobody fails English.”

“I’ll be one of the few that does.”

I let her go and start digging around the bottom of my bag for my keys. “Let’s go to Starbucks. We’ll get chai lattes and try to make ourselves feel better.”

Right then Kelly comes sweeping out of the hall, her new best friend Cristina at her side. She’s one of those mousy brunettes who wears her school bag straps tightened all the way, and has a particular fondness for horses. I’ve seen her show jumping at the agricultural fairs before, and I’m convinced she’s the one behind the fan page on Facebook that’s been set up for herself and her horse Barney. It’s just a stream of photographs of her on the horse with weird captions like Cris and Barney looking fab! I distinctly remember Kelly complaining about how strange she was before, but now here they are, joined at the hip, and I know purely because she needs to have someone in her corner. It doesn’t even matter if she likes her or not. 

“That was so easy.” Kelly says loudly. “I thought they’d at least make paper one a bit of a challenge, but it was a breeze. I’ve never felt more confident” She’s trying very hard not to look at either Claire or me, thinking she’s being sly, but Claire gives my ribs a little nudge with her elbow and I know that we’re going to be laughing about this over coffee in about ten minutes. Kelly thinks these types of statements are devastating to our psyche, but when we’re together she holds no power over us anymore, even if sometimes when I’m alone I remember the fun we used to have. She wasn’t always awful, she wasn’t always mean, and there’s times that I feel sad for what’s been ruined, but I’d never ever admit those things out loud. 

Claire and I leave the school building and climb into my car. I can drive now. I passed my driving test in April, much to her delight, because now that Shane is away at college she needs someone to transport her wherever she wants to go. My car isn’t very good, actually, it’s my dad’s car, and it’s from 1995. The shine has worn off the paint so that it’s this weird, matte, chalky texture, so it’s not good looking, but it’s better than nothing at all in a town that doesn’t even have public buses. We spend so much time in this car, just driving around and talking and eating McFlurries. We used to talk about boys a lot. She’d tell me all about Shane and what he was doing and how she felt about it, about how weird it was to be away from him and to not ever really know what he was doing up there in UCD.

“Studying science.” I’d always tell her jokingly. 

“Yes, but what else? Did you see all the hot girls they had in the prospectus?”

“And he isn’t looking at any of them. If he was, he’d be some fool.”

“He’d be a dead man.”

“Any messing from him and we’ll drive through campus and plough him down.”

“I love how you always have my back.”

She listened to me talk about boys for a while too, but it was really only ever one boy. It was fun while it lasted, going into depth about all these tiny details like the way the muscles in his arms moved when he changed gears in his car, the curve of his nose bridge from his side view, the exact places where he put his hands and the way he turned his head when he kissed me, but after a while she began to get bored of hearing it. 

“You know, there are other fellas out there.” She started saying. “The world is filled with hipster-y arty type boys, you just have to go out and look for them.”

“I don’t want other boys.” I’d said. “I want him.” And I did. I still do, even though we don’t talk to each other anymore. Sometimes, late at night when my head is swirling and I can’t sleep I’ll open up our old email thread from last autumn and read through every message until I reach the last one. It’s from me, sent on the 6th of November, and it says: Happy birthday! I hope you’re going to do something fun today. Do you think your new friends will get you a cake, or maybe take you to a bar? It would be great, and I wish I could be there to celebrate with you. I’m glad that your project is coming along well, it sounds so difficult to me. I don’t know how you do it, and in German too! He never responded, and it feels like my message is still hanging somewhere in the ether, just waiting to be acknowledged, for him to remember that it’s there, to pluck it out and finally type out his response, but I know now that he won’t. Too much time has gone by, and too much has happened. Still, there hasn’t been a day that’s gone by that I haven’t thought about him, looked at a picture of him, googled his name.
