If you’re looking for something different to watch this Christmas, I recommend this BBC series from 1986, which was faithfully adapted from Lucy M Boston’s book of the same name. Made ostensibly for children, it’s still very enjoyable as an adult, and parts of it stuck with me for over thirty years after just one viewing!

Young Toseland thinks he’s going to be stuck alone at boarding school for the holidays until a letter arrives from the great-grandmother he has never met asking him to come and stay with her. It’s not long before he discovers that she isn’t the only one living in the house…

The Children of Green Knowe (1986)

Продолжаю свой детский хоррор-марафон, и на этот раз в мои руки попал мини-сериал “Дети Грин-Ноу”, снятый по первой книге серии Люси М. Бостон, написанной еще в 50-70 годах (увы, эти книги у нас почти неизвестны, никогда не были переведены на русский язык, да и на английском я не нашел всех шести книг). Мальчик по имени Толли приезжает на Рождество к бабушке, о которой никогда не знал - она оказывается доброй и заботливой (и похожей на смесь Энтони Хопкинса и Рутгера Хауэра). Вот только в старинном доме, помимо нее, живут еще призраки давно умерших детей семнадцатого века, о которых бабушка рассказывает много историй. Вообще-то это не ужасы, а довольно-таки теплая и уютная история про привидений, но все равно немного берет жуть, когда одинокий мальчик Толли бегает в поисках смеющихся невидимых детей, оставляет сахар для невидимой лошади, которая все еще живет в своем старом стойле и заводит беседы с призраками-детьми, которые как ни в чем не бывало появляются в саду или доме. Конечно, были и моменты, когда бедняга Толли все равно пугался до полусмерти. Еще бы - ведь неподалеку растет дерево-демон, Грин-Ноуер... Очень жаль, что мини-сериал охватывает только первую книгу, потому что история дома и его умерших детей меня очень заинтересовала и хотелось бы узнать о дальнейших приключениях... хотя нет, слово “приключения” не очень подходит этой неторопливой и размеренной истории с запахом травы и потрескиванием камина. Правда, есть более поздняя полнометражная экранизация другой книги - и когда-нибудь я с ней обязательно познакомлюсь.

Someone should write a crossover story where Maria from The Box Of Delights and Linnet from The Children Of Green Knowe somehow team up for an adventure, because I feel like together the two of them would be an absolutely formidable

#i mean they are both less than 10 years old but they have so much personality and basically steal the stories they appear in #maria has been expelled from several schools and has a collection of pistols #and linnet goes through life with an ''i'm already dead so i literally fear nothing and nobody'' attitude #i feel like if you teamed them up together and teamed them up against any villain they would be an unstoppable force #the box of delights #the children of green knowe #also the fact that linnet is a ghost who doesn't age is very convenient bc even though the box of delights is set a couple of #decades before the children of green knowe there is literally no reason maria couldn't have been packed off to spend a summer at #green knowe after she got expelled from her third school and her mother got fed up of dealing with her and teamed up with linnet #in the 1930s

the knowledge that for a while there (movie) sonic probably just saw tom and maddie as his best friends that hes having a really long sleepover with is sooo funny. sonic was really like yeah im a teenager and these guys i permanently live with are adults who are much older than me and they gave me my own bedroom in their house and they take care of me and make sure i eat and have a place to sleep and am safe but those are just average best friend activities really theyre not my parents or anything
