btw did you guys see how the hannah arendt prize committee tried to revoke masha gessen's prize after gessen, a jewish journalist, wrote an essay about how zionists and zionist-sympathizing gentiles, particularly in germany, wield accusations of antisemitism to shut down anti-zionist jews... an essay in which they specifically quoted hannah arendt several times

I don’t think An gets enough credit for being like… such a casually nice & kind person without even trying. To the point where even I can tell and I’m not a VBS fan (behind on stories) bc it just bleeds through in every interaction she has with other characters. Like it’s never her being Absurdly Over The Top Kind she just. Treats everyone equally. Friendly with everyone. Thinking abt her being the first one @ school to attempt to befriend Mizuki and treat them like a person. Nene being nervous on her first day of second year and An just immediately walks up to her like Hiiii good morning!! An Shiraishi: Lesbian Jesus.

There's a scene in the first season of Babylon Berlin where a characters reads a lecture on psychoanalysis and PTSD (the series are set sometime between the two world wars) and the audience boos him.
"Brain is an organ, not a poetry book," they say.
For me it put into perspective how important was what Freud did. Considering the setting he had to work in, the setting he had to overcome in his own mind first, we really don't value the guy enough.
Not like I didn't *know* it, but it helped immensely to see it in context.
He was the first who said that humans have an inner life that's neither sacred nor purely physical. That it's governed by its own predictable rules and breaks in predictable ways, and that it can be mended through talking. Not being electrocuted or medicated out of the patient.
Just how awesome is that. Just how much inner work that required in his times.

Guys guys guys good news I had another horrible thought !
So you know how the Institution (comic ver.) goes around plucking homeless orphan babies off the streets so that their child soldiers will feel a sense of debt and loyalty? (I gotta give credit to @mer1099 for informing me of that I never ventured to wonder where the orphans came from lmfao) And we know our Ambrosius was one of said orphan street babies who got plucked up.
Well as far as I'm aware, it's never specified who exactly is plucking these kids off the street. I doubt the director has the time for that, I also doubt that they have a team of people whose sole job that is. I imagine it's just a situation where if anyone who works for the Institution finds one, they just are supposed to bring it back. Since they're police, they'd probably be the ones finding street kids anyway.
So regarding all that: Do you think Ambrosius ever found one? More than one, even?
Do you think he ever was wandering around, on or off duty, and found some dirty scruffy child eating trash and hiding in an alleyway? Do you think he felt a deep sense of unease as it reminded him of memories he'd long ago walled off? Do you think he approached the child with a big smile on his face, and said "You don't have to be scared of me. I'm the guy from the statue!" and promised to take them someplace safe before bringing them to the Institution orphanage and feeling proud of himself that he did a good thing?
Maybe he watched them grow up and become a knight, or maybe they were still little when everything fell apart. Maybe he brought back many little kids. Maybe he felt like he had a responsibility to go out looking for them, to save them.
Do you think, after everything fell apart and the Institution was dissolved, that he laid awake at night thinking about them, wondering if he really had done the right thing?

Hey, so it turns out that not only did James and Lucretia Garfield finally fall in love with each other after years of marriage, but we have proof of it in one of the sweetest love letters I've ever read.
*
Willard's, Nov 24, 1867
My Precious Darling,
It is nearly ten o'clock Sunday night, and I will not lie down to sleep till I have told you again that I love you. Surely, "love is the fulfilling of the law," and the law of our love is liberty. We no longer love because we ought to, but because we do--the Tyranny of our love is sweet. We waited long for his coming, but he has come to stay. I hope wish, my dear love, that God would let us die together when we die, that neither of us might be left in the empty world for a single hour. It would be unkind of me, to tell you, if I could, how lonely and lost I am without you. Part of the machinery of my life seems to be gone, and I wander around unconsciously as if in search of it, that I may set nature at work again.
Your precious words of the 21st came to me this morning--and fell down into my heart like benedictions. Did you know how unutterably sweet it is to be praised by you? The words you wrote have lifted me and made me proud and happy all day. How sweet the privilege I have had, this summer! The alchemist sought to transmute other substances into gold--I have done far better. I have been able to transmute gold into esthetic joys, intellectual growth, heart life--and better than all--have been permitted to see it transformed into sweet and beautiful decorations of the noblest and truest woman I ever saw--and she as glad to be mine as I to be hers. This surpasses alchemy. It is divine. It is a new proof of the truth that "God is love."
Well Darling, I have done nothing of worth except to hunt houses and read. I am satisfied that the price of the house I wrote you of is too great and we ought not to pay it. I hope I can do better. I am thinking of buying a house on time and hope to sell it again when we are done with it. If we had done so, four years ago, we should have owned it now. I am anxious to receive your answer to my letter of Thursday--It may help me to a decision.
[political paragraph cut for irrelevance]
Dear Love, do write me very often. Kiss the sweet [???] and tell them Papa loves them all.
Ever Your ownest own James

Actually Zhao Lusi would be my second pick for Fanny in an Asian Mansfield Park. My first is now Shin Eun Soo because well,, her portrayal of Cheong-ah in Twinkling Watermelon practically was Fanny already, and she was so good. Put her in a book-accurate adaptation with an accurate characterization of Fanny and people may actually start to value book!Fanny

Romance authors didn't have a bunch of teens and twenty somethings who aren't even your demographic screeching at them about how bad and harmful their work was pre-internet.
