At the Same Time

So I was thinking about S4, specifically two of the three main arcs, as Ezran’s speech in 4x03 sets the stage, thematically, for the entire season. It’s not hard to see how it connects to how Janai has to deal with lingering human vs elf sentiments or in her impatient brother who refuses to see the wisdom in Ezran’s ideology. It’s also not hard to see how it connects to Callum’s feelings towards Rayla, given that, “We have to acknowledge the weight of the pain and loss, but open up our eyes and allow ourselves to hope and maybe forgive and love again.” 

However, I was thinking about my post in which I claim the Soren-Claudia reunion scene in 4x07 and the two cakes Janaya scene in 4x08 operate as a Mouthpiece for what Rayllum isn’t saying overtly to one another (for more reason than one) and realizes that applies doubly in Janai and Amaya’s case not necessarily for Callum, but also for Rayla.

Because we can view Ezran’s speech as it is straightforwardly, and it is very thematically rich. But if we connect it further to Ezran and Janai’s similarities throughout the season, something a little bit deeper takes shape.

Which is to say: how you maintain two forces and desires that seem utterly opposing? Just have 

Two Cakes

Amaya argues that Janai’s two paths are not mutually exclusive to each other. Unlike what Karim believes, Amaya posits that Janai should, “Forget Karim: this is not about him. What life do you want?” Forget about the nerves and anxieties in your heart or even about pleasing people (even her as Janai’s fiancee) to determine what does Janai want. She wants her love but also to follow what she feels is her duty, and Amaya reaffirms that Janai can have both. She does not have to sacrifice one for the other (even if it means risking her life in the following episode in order to hold onto the crown).

Janai’s views these two paths and desires as things that cannot be reconciled at first. This is why when she turns to Amaya after the fight in 4x09 and states the future will be beautiful while looking at her future, it’s meaningful and full circle. But the tribunal verdict also proves that while Janai is determined to at first reconcile justice and compassion, she is also aware that having both her place as queen and her place at Amaya’s side will be difficult - not impossible - to likewise reconcile.

This mirrors what Ezran says in his speech about having to acknowledge the weigh of the pain and loss, but to also push forward. To not forget how you have suffered, but to not let yourself be defined by it as well. To realize that pain and love are not mutually exclusive, but largely two sides of the same coin, and you cannot lose sight of either if you want to move forward in a way that will actually heal you. You cannot move forward through denial, but you also cannot move forward if you do not acknowledge your grief. 

On the one hand, we do see this with Callum’s side of Rayla and Callum’s reconciliation (part 1) arc this season. But I think if we keep this idea of opposition in mind, we get a peek into why the 4x09 scene exists for Rayla, after everything. 

In one of the few scenes where she gets to talk about her own feelings, we know Rayla has come to realize or reaffirm that her paranoia and mission to kill Viren made her “risk losing the best thing she ever had: [Callum].” She’s spent the season dealing with the fallout, whether it’s Callum being almost unable to look at her, not wanting to speak with her, still having walls up and not discussing their relationship even as he begins to heavily thaw throughout 4x06-4x08. 

Then rather than paranoia, Rayla is confronted with absolute proof, when she also knows Viren’s plans are deadly and dangerous and would put Callum in the most absolute danger possible (re: Aaravos’ possession). Still, she holds back. She lingers.

Are these two paths, two desires, her mission and the love of her life, doomed to be mutually exclusive, or to have the former tear apart the latter? Can she go after him and still have Callum’s love? 

And Callum, through his own journey that I wanna talk more about, says (in spite of everything), “Yes.”

She can have two cakes (even if it hurts).

My take on the Prince and Princess of Wales’ marriage after watching Ep 6 of The Crown

OKAY SO I HAVEN’T WATCHED THE OTHER EPS YET SO LET’S SEE HOW THIS PLAYS OUT....

I’m totally aware that The Crown is pretty much fictional, but if there’s something on the tragedy of Diana and Charles’ marriage that I learned by the drama, I learned that they could have probably made it work. 

Let me just point out that as a person who has never been in a relationship before, I want to make a disclaimer that all of this is my opinion as an observer and that I am not claiming to be a love expert or a love therapist or whatever. Furthermore, I want to tell everyone to take everything I am about to say with a grain of salt lmao.

Alright, let me talk about the ep itself first before getting objective. First thing’s first, I really enjoyed the episode! We all know the tragedy in real life, but it’s nice to see both perspectives of Diana and Charles (even if I’m a Team Diana myself). Also, I truly enjoyed the parts where they were getting along, the part where they danced especially. It broke my heart absolutely when Diana talked about what she ever wanted was to be loved. </3 Also, Margaret is the only character who is making perfect sense so far, and as an angry Filipino, can I just say: I truly enjoyed her Imelda Marcos mock in Episode 3.

NOW OBSERVATIONS BRINGING INTO REAL LIFE. Like I said, The Crown is fictional. I know that and y’all don’t need to lecture me on that. Objectively, I think Charles and Diana could have worked through their marriage if only they were able to give and take and communicate more often. I’ve seen a video of the real dance, and obviously, it has less life and chemistry the way Josh O’Connor and Emma Corrin performed it, but you know? If the two parties really made more effort to listen, they might’ve ended up well and falling in love even. Of course, Charles should have stopped contacting Camilla too. From what I have read about Charles and Diana’s marriage, Diana also cheated, but honestly, I don’t think she would have had Charles stopped seeing Camilla.

Of course, the other part with Charles’ family meddling around his love life in the first place is to be blamed for it all. However, Camilla was still very much committed to Andrew Parker-Bowles, and I understand why the royal family was concerned. Was it right that they meddled? No. Did they have reason? Yes. And while it all led to tragedies, they were only doing what they thought was best.

In Episode 2 of The Crown, Charles mentioned that he would’ve liked it better if he had more time to get-to-know Diana. Honestly, if that only happened, I think things have gone far better, in the drama and in real life. Point is, what Charles and Diana probably needed in their marriage was patience, understanding, willingness to listen, and time (and basically anything stated in Corinthians 13 lmao). But then again, that’s all in a perfect world, and we can’t turn back time.

Anyway... Prince Charles I still hate you, and this whole post was way too long of an analysis for TV characters who are also real characters.

Some of my favorite moments in S4:

Callum has a humongous conflict of feelings and emotions about Rayla's return.

Callum refuses to let Rayla blame herself for leaving Soren. "Rayla, Don't" lives rent-free in my head.

Rayla doing a Cartwheel in the Darkness.

The gift giving ceremony made me an emotional mess, where Rayla talked about how her blades were the last precious gift that was made for her and are all she has to remember Runaan and Ethari by. Ezran reminisced how his Crown was made specifically for him from the steel of his father's sword. Carrying his lessons while trying to forge a better path than his father did.

Seeing Janai have doubts and worries about being the queen of her people. But towards the end, she wants to be queen. One that won't let history define her and who will build a bright future for her people. "I make history. It does not make me." is an absolute gem.

Ezran and Zubeia acknowledged the anger and pain of their respective kingdoms from the losses they've been through and their people being at war with each other.

Rayla and Ezran have the best sibling like relationship. I love them so much. ❤

And many more....

"Rayla, don't" is so personal to me and has so many layers (all of their dynamic in 4x06 and 4x05 do like wow) and I loved getting to see so many various sides of Janai - vulnerable, fierce, loving, needing support and being given it, evasive, proud, strong, steadfast, patient. The scene where she puts on her crown in front of the mirror and then takes it off once Karim appears? Poetic cinema.

And all the brotps - Zubeia + Ez & Soren, Ez&Zym, Ez&Rayla, etc. So heartwarming and sweet. The 4x08 gift giving scene makes me cry every time (thanks Ezran) and is definitely one of my favourite scenes in the season!!

Scenes that demonstrate Arthur and Leon’s dynamic:

2x02: Leon’s first appearance and he's instantly a sassy little shit to Arthur and then lies to him, which Arthur isn't happy about but doesn't call him on. Also the look on Leon’s face when Arthur pitches his fit is like "here we go again" Later in the episode Arthur is smug when he unhorsed Leon of his own merit.

3x12: Arthur's reaction to believing Leon dead, and his joy at seeing him alive.

Also 3x13: Leon to Arthur: "There is no one I'd rather die for"

4x02: Leon supporting and advising Arthur as well as providing words of encouragement and comfort

4x03: you can see Leon grinning proudly when Arthur is crowned king

4x06: the sheepish puppy grin when Leon reacted instinctively to Arthur behind the tree and Arthur's reaction. Followed of course by a knights handshake

Also 4x06: "What is the job?" "To kill Arthur" "Driving you mad is he?" Those are the words of a man that has been there and can fully relate to fantasizing about a bit of light treason every once and awhile when Arthur is being insufferable

4x10: The way Leon asks Arthur "why have you got stew in your hair?"

4x13: Leon being the first one to shout ling live the king, laughing at Arthur's joke, Leon being earnest and helping boster up Arthur’s confidence, "I know that I would ride into the mouth of hell for you" need I say more?

5x01: Arthur managing to pick out Leon’s cry of pain in the middle of a battle while on the other side of the battle field and immediately cutting his way through enemies to get to him and help him

5x03: Leon not calling Arthur or Merlin on the absurdity of the answer "poetry" but also very much judging them as he walks away

5x04: Leon trying to make Arthur see reason and his concerned but unsurprised look at Arthur’s stubbornness

5x07: Leon’s reaction to Arthur being poisoned and dying. His reactions in the scene where he's talking to Gwen are flawless.
