For anyone who is trying to do research and understand what's going on in Palestine and Israel, I really implore you to apply the most basic media criticism and literacy, even with what is considered reputable sources.
I just read the headline "no more fuel left in Gaza powerplant" which is extremely misleading when you read the actual article stating that "Israel has cut the electricity supply". It's not the most sinister example of misleading headlines and carefully selected wording, but it felt personally unsettling as it came from what used to be a fairly trusted news source for me. So this is a reminder for myself and everyone else:
-do not solely rely on one news source
-be generally critical
-consider who is the active/passive agent in a text
-consider how the wording infers value (common example is the use of the phrase "are dead" versus "have been killed")

on my quest to find more books to read this year, there's been something kind of heartwarming to see that of the books on hold at my local library, or on the weekly bestseller's list at my local bookstores, there's always at least one book up there that's about Palestine. It's at least nice to see that some people in my area want to learn about the historical context of what's happening now, and learn far more than what a few posts on their feed can tell them. It makes me hope that public perception will continue to change for the better - and that the kind of support I've seen in my area won't die down immediately after a ceasefire is called

any opinions on the hobonichi planners? i’m looking at the original A6 and the weekly because they seem very portable BUT i love a weekly spread that the original doesn’t have and i’m worried about the weekly one being too cramped to fit everything

I finished my book while in Germany on holiday and I had not packed a second one so, despite all my misgivings, I found myself reading an e-book instead.
And on one hand, I have always been a print purist, reading words on a screen is just not the same as being able to run your hand over physical pages. But on the other, I realised I actually really like reading in little pockets of dead time during the day -- while waiting for a bus or for my coffee to be ready or on the tube and I read so much more if I have easy access to it on my phone. Not sure where to go with this discovery.

Law and Bepo have just finished charting a new course when Law feel's Luffy's heart begin to race. He lets out a breath, ignoring it, and finishes looking over the last of the calculations, giving Bepo a final nod and stepping away, pulling a cigarette out of his pocket as he steps out the door onto the deck. He leans against the rail, lighting up, and brings the cigarette to his lips, inhaling.
He feels Luffy's heart skip a beat. The racing slows, tempo lowing again back to normal rates, and Law almost huffs and ignores it entirely, except then Luffy's heart rate continues to drop, and it doesn't stop. It hits his resting heart rate and then keeps falling, plummeting rapidly. Law sucks in a sharp breath, stomach dropping, one hand clutching at his chest as he stops so fast he almost staggers, because fuck, something is happening-
-
Luffy is dying, and Law is half an ocean away, too far to help.

I've been addicted to cola drinks for close to two decades (started out as me desperate and unconscious attempt at self-medicating ADHD), and all my attempts at quitting have failed. And I don't think I'm still quitting, but I accidentally found something that severely curbs my need for cola drinks:
Mandarin juice.
Specifically Fun Light juice concentrate, which to my mother's and diabetic friend's delight is sugar free. I have no idea what it is about mandarin juice that does it, but so far I have reliably wanted it instead of cola. They are even on the saime aisle in my regular store and I walked right past all the cola drinks without even looking. Weird, but I'm not complaining. The juice is cheaper and many juice bottles were added to the deposit system some time ago, so I even get tiny bit of money back when I return the bottle.
I also bought Cola juice concentrate and so far I am not impressed. I will probably mix it with mandarin juice so it won't go to waste.
