THE DEATH OF MARAT (1793) by JACQUES-LOUIS DAVID
JEAN-PAUL MARAT is shown in THE DEATH OF MARAT, lying in his bathtub, his upper body resting on the edge of the tub.
He is wearing a white turban over his head and his limp body is leaning against a chair behind the bath on the right and his right hand is hanging over the edge of the bath, his dead fingers touching the floor.
A little to the right and beside the bath is a small wooden block or crate that serves as a table and holds a quill and an ink bottle with some papers on it.
On the bottom of the crate are the words, "À MARAT, DAVID" and "L'AN DEUX," which is believed to mean "YEAR TWO." The bathtub itself is covered with a green cloth, and there is red blood on the water near MARAT'S upper body.
The painting of the death of MARAT was done in such a way that it portrays MARAT as a martyr, particularly of the FRENCH REVOLUTION. MARAT was murdered by the GIRONDIN leader, CHARLOTTE CORDAY.
