Have you seen The Death of Stalin? One of my favorite Jason Isaacs performances, albeit I may be biased as its one of my favorite movies.
Thanks @majortomiscominghome for this great Ask about The Death of Stalin as an iconic film in Jason Isaacs canon! I have indeed seen this film and it's a corker.
Here on Tumblr I've also bonded with other fans, including fellow Isaacs appreciator @lyledebeast whose content appears frequently on my blog, about how spectacularly he succeeds in bringing the delightfully unhinged Field Marshal Zhukov to life.
For those who may enjoy a refresher on the genius of Isaacs playing Zhukov, feast your eyes and ears on this compilation of premium moments from the film!
Zooming out a bit, I'll note that content involving Russian political intrigue tends to land well with me to begin with. Although I'm not Russian specifically, I'm predominantly Slavic culturally. Like many of my fellow Slavs, I share a morbid fascination with all the wacky stuff our societies have done over the years.
I was thinking about Armando Iannucci because I want to rewatch The Thick of It (it was one of the greatest comedies, it’s Succession’s older sibling). I remembered that I still haven’t seen his version of David Copperfield, and then I remembered how Russian state media kept mentioning that movie as a condemnation of how sjw the Western media got. They even mentioned it linked to the Oscars (the year it wasn’t so-white) even though it wasn’t nominated at all. More than that, it wasn’t even a popular movie. And I didn’t think about why it was so talked about, but now I realised.
Armando Iannucci made The Death of Stalin prior to that film. And this movie was a proper scandal in Russia. It was ready to be screened, properly dubbed and distributed, but then the license was taken away shortly before the premier. It was the first time that happened in recent history of Russia. So, I guess that the Russian state had a vendetta against Armando Iannucci because of The Death of Stalin.
What a king.
I know and love Armando Iannucci’s work since 2013, so I kept a tab on it.
