Merlin: *sneezes*
Merlin: You aren't still angry with me, are you?
Arthur, sighing: We spend the entire day hunting, catch nothing, because anytime we got anywhere near something, you sneezed and frightened it away.
Merlin: Not the last time.
Arthur: No, that time you fell into a stream. No one could accuse you of being predictable, Merlin.
Merlin: I think I'm getting a cold.
Arthur: Let's hope its a bad one.

Merlin: This is very a powerful and dangerous artefact. You’d be messing with magic we don’t fully understand.
Arthur: That sounds like a dare.
Merlin: nO!

Every time I watch the death song of uther pendragon I’m always left in shock. Like I can’t believe he actually said all that stuff.
Arthur said “I feel so alone sometimes without you” and uther replied with “everything you’ve done since you became king sucks you failure, yes even though you’ve brought more peace to the kingdom than I’ve ever had you’re one big DISAPPOINTMENT.” then tried to kill him and all his loved ones.

NO. NO. I can't do this-
In The Death Song of Uther Pendragon when Arthur talks to Uther from the Spirit World this is how they part, right
Uther: Think about everything that I have said to you. It isn't too late. Now go. Arthur, distraught, turns to leave. He walks towards the exit. Uther: I will always love you, Arthur. Arthur turns to look back at UTHER, who is standing there, swallowed by bright light. ARTHUR leaves the Spirit World.
At first it's simply just atrocious how Uther would say this to Arthur right after making him feel week and incompetent and undeserving of honest love at their last chance to talk, but you can put it aside as Uther being himself. But it's so much more fucked up than that.
After the candelabra fell and Percival got injured and Merlin discussed his suspicions about a ghost with Gaius:
Gaius: In the days of the Old Religion, the priestesses trained for years before entering into the spirit world. It was fraught with dangers. There was one thing they were schooled never to do. As the Veil closed, they were never to look back at the spirit. Merlin: What happened if they did? Gaius: They'd release the spirit into this world. Merlin: Arthur must have looked back.
This was it. This was why Uther told Arthur he loved him. Because he knew Arthur would turn back in shock. He used Arthur's vulnerability about their relationship to get out from behind the veil and "make order" in Camelot.

Obviously everyone loves this scene in general and while my little shipper heart loves to see that, what I’m gonna say could be true either way!
Something that I think a lot of Merlin fans notice about this scene is just how distraught Arthur looks.
Tumblr media
I think the big reason Arthur is so upset here is because he actually sees Uther trying to kill him.
He knows that Uther has been trying to kill the others, (Gwen & Percival) but he didn’t see it happen. It can be upsetting to know something, but it is so much worse when you see it for yourself. There’s also the denial he had been clinging to that they had just been accidents before they actually see Uther.
Those incidents were indirect attacks. Granted the one on Percival could’ve been way worse, but it’s not as though Uther swung the axe himself. It’s not as thought he murdered Gwen outright; he trapped her so that she would die, but he didn’t literally try to kill her.
Here, Uther has him pinned to the wall with spears, and is actively advancing on him with his own sword.
Any hope or scrap of denial that his father cares for him is shattered.
Uther never approved of Gwen or the non-noble knights idea, but it was him who appointed Merlin his manservant in the first place. While he’d been willing to let Merlin die over the years, he had never attempted to murder him. Even when Merlin was being a nuisance and terrible servant, he didn’t order Arthur to get rid of him. He even acknowledges and appreciates Merlin’s loyalty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s other moments, but this is the really big one. Uther is being completely honest and genuine because he thinks he’s going to die. As big of an asshole he is to Merlin, there is some sort of underlying respect for him because of his dedication to Arthur. I think Arthur knows that too, at least a little bit.
So to see Uther trying to kill Merlin outright even though he knows all that he’s done for him, it makes the damn crack. He doesn’t know that Uther’s so determined because of the magic, so all he sees is his father trying to kill his best friend. Knowing about the other attacks and now seeing this one? He is justifiably devastated.
I wish Arthur had been allowed to cry more. I know Merlin suffers the most, but it’s not even a question that Arthur is right behind him in second place.

Merlin S5E3, “The Death Song of Uther Pendragon”
Merlin and Arthur calmly walking through the woods.
Getting “you would die before your stroke fell” vibes.
A horn. OH A DANGEROUS HORN. Remember Morgause?
Merlin is taller than Arthur and I love it.
STILL NOT OVER GAIUS’ HAIR.
…guys that’s a small Stonehenge
I’m reminded too much of Lancelot.
Uther you shit.
How it’s all in whispers…
Arthur being so hesitant in a way we haven’t seen for a whole season…
Uther fucking hell
Oh that one hurts.
Arthur, remember Orpheus and Eurydice. Looking back is rarely ever good.
Okay! So Gwen is incessantly being attacked by Uther’s ghost! I’m sure this is nothing to worry about!
Gwen better not die as a result of this.
Poetry?
Leon is not paid enough for this and remains my favourite knight.
This episode is creepy.

the death song of uther pendragon is one of THE MOST unrealistic episodes in Merlin… how is Uther able to see that Arthur knighted common men and married Gwen but NOT witness Merlin doing magic once????? and when he does find out, you’re telling me Arthur doesn’t hear Uther say Merlin’s got magic????? what a load of rubbish

I think her purple dress was a great choice for this episode! It blended in with the background when the lights when out, and that shade of purple is gorgeous! for a spooky night at the castle :)

“Merlin has magic!”
It was all that Uther needed— that momentary hesitation in Arthur’s physique... that doubt thrusted upon him ever since the day he had blinked into a life without loving guardians... that silent second of shock emanating from both sides, surrendering to circumstance and fate.
It was all that Uther needed to thrust the sword he had into the sorcerer’s chest.

How did ghost!Uther know about Arthur marrying Gwen but knew nothing about Merlin's magic? Why does he not mention Morgana? Why is Gwen given just one line? Why didn't Arthur apologise to her & Percival for put their lives in danger? Why does no-one point out Arthur's hypocrisy? Why does Merlin still insist Arthur is a better king than Uther? WHY DOES THIS EPISODE EVEN EXIST?! It doesn't advance the show in any way. I swear, 60% of this series is stupid, pointless filler & it shows in Season 5.
I forgot to mention that part! I also don't get how Uther knew everything Arthur had done, yet didn't know Merlin had magic lmao.
I think Arthur didn't want anyone to know about Uther, but I believe he would've told Gwen about it. I mean, Gwen was obviously attacked by something, so she would've required an explanation. I just wish we had seen Gwen comfort and reassure Arthur the way Merlin did... but, of course, the writers didn't want that...
Merlin never holds Arthur accountable. He's always ready to make up justifications for Arthur's wrongdoings and to give praise for anything he gets right.
Merlin took whatever Arthur gave him. If Arthur condemned magic, that was okay because he would eventually unite Albion. If, on the other hand, Arthur showed a sorcerer any bit of kindness, then that was proof Arthur was on the right track and a good King.
Arthur's definitely a better king than Uther where magic's concerned, but it just doesn't matter to Merlin if he has to wait decades for Arthur to fulfill his destiny or if he fucks up along the way. He'll literally wait forever if he has to.
This episode is possibly the worst one in season 5 and one of the worst in the series. It doesn't advance the plot at all, but season 5 doesn't even have a plot or a purpose. Nothing could've changed the ending, so all the other episodes were pointless.
Merlin is at its best when it doesn't try to have a plot. The series' charm are the characters and their relationships. Sadly, after season 3, both characters and relationships took a huge hit. Season 4 still did okay, and had a lot of highs despite the lows, but season 5 was a massive disappointment, since it had no plot and sidelined all characters and relationships outside Merthur.
Thanks for the ask!
