No hardcore fandom has ever died so quickly and so completely as Veronica Mars. This is the story of its murder.
They should study Veronica Mars in Hollywood. I'm serious. It's an incredible story of how to go from "loud, passionate fanbase with its own fandom name that campaigns and advocates constantly for it" to "absolutely zero fucking interest" damn near OVERNIGHT with just ONE epically terri-bad decision.
Tumblr media
If you weren't there, you don't understand: From 2007 to 2014, the fandom — the "Marshmallows," as they called themselves — were everywhere in the Internet's geek spaces, my friends. They routinely beat the drum about the series' three seasons and its excellence, lamented its cancellation, pushed others to give the show a try, and always - ALWAYS - proudly and loudly called for the series to be revived.
FULL DISCLOSURE/CONFESSION: I've not even watched that much Veronica Mars, frankly... ? Yeah, I'm sorry! it does seem pretty good from like the four-or-five hours I've experienced firsthand. I just never took the time to sit down with it. Regardless, I find fandoms and their dynamics — both how they operate internally and how they display to others externally — deeply fascinating. And I honestly find them easier to study from the outside than the inside. Like, if I'm IN a fandom, I'm more likely to stay in my corner and ignore places that seem negative. But being on the outside lets me just... absorb what's out there, looking into every forum without judgment. It's like studying pop-culture sociology or something? And it helps that I'm very close to some serious(-ly burnt) Marshmallows. It makes it so much easier to find and absorb the gamut of the fandom.
Besides: There is NO fandom story I've ever seen that's anything like what happened to Veronica Mars and the Marshmallows.
(Time to insert a brief explainer for the uninitiated: Veronica Mars was a TV series that aired from 2004-2007 on the now-deceased UPN network wherein Kristen Bell played the titular character, a high school girl whose single dad was a private detective in the fictional community of Neptune, California. She grew up working "unofficially" as his assistant, which meant that she herself was effectively a teenage private detective.
The three core elements of the series were: 1) Veronica investigating each week's big mystery with plenty of quips and snark, 2) Watching Veronica's various relationships develop and shift, with most of the focus given to a) her relationship to her father and b) Her romantic pursuits (which began as the Veronica/Duncan/Logan triangle before eventually becoming focused on the slow-burn, off-on Veronica/Logan love story), and 3) The gradual development of that season's "mytharc" — the overarching BIG MYSTERY that doesn't get resolved or wrapped until the season finale. So it went over the course of two seasons that took place in high school and the third, shorter season that was at the start of Veronica's collegiate career.)
Tumblr media
Just how big and how passionate were the Marshmallows? WELL! When series creator Rob Thomas (not the Matchbox 20 guy) and star Kristen Bell announced the Kickstarter campaign for the Veronica Mars movie in March 2013, it achieved its heretofore-unprecedented goal of TWO MILLION GODDAMN DOLLARS within less than 12 hours. At that time, it was the biggest Kickstarter goal to ever succeed — and certainly the fastest to reach that kind of height. Fans fell OVER themselves to pay out for it. Hell, my own significant other was DEEP in the tank for VM at the time and invested enough to get multiple t-shirts as backer rewards as well as a disk copy of the movie when it eventually came home.
And AFTER the movie hit in 2014? It was thankfully beloved and embraced! The once-teenage characters were adults who were actually out living on their own and working for a living, but the fandom had grown up with them, so it wasn't like they were begging for them to stay young students. They embraced Adult Veronica and her new adventure. The fandom rejoiced loudly and continued to be all over the geek side of the Internet... where they, of course, still wanted more. Sure, there were new novels in the aftermath (which were written by the creator of the series), but most of the Marshmallows were calling for more movies or a streaming revival.
And then, at long last... season four was actually announced. And there was much (premature) rejoicing yet again.
Tumblr media
Yes, Veronica Mars returned for a fourth season on Hulu in 2019. It was just eight episodes, and it was heavily centered on one season-long mystery instead of sprinkling that amongst a bunch of smaller ones, but it would still feature the same ol' Veronica. They promised a new, more "adult" mystery/investigation plus a strong focus on Veronica and Logan's love story.
New Hulu purchased the rights to the first three seasons and hyped up its presence on the platform while marketing the return for the new run. The marketing team played up the most popular quips from the show's history plus put out TONS of stuff centered on the Logan/Veronica ship to pump up the fans.
The season was dropped all at once using the classic Netflix "binge" model in July 2019. And then... afterwards?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There was a brief explosion of LOUD RAGE from the Marshmallows at what series creator Rob Thomas had to done to burn and spite the fandom and ruin his own goodwill.
SPOILERS FOR SEASON 4: See, at the end of the movie, Veronica and Logan finally entered into a long-term relationship. In season four, they've been dating for years, and Logan proposes marriage. But of course there has to be drama/obstacles: In this case, Veronica isn't sure she's ready to marry... or capable of being in a marriage. Ah, but of course she eventually realizes how much Logan means to her. The two are married, and, in the season finale... Logan is killed by a car bomb in the penultimate scene. The final scene is a flashfoward to a year later, where Veronica leaves Neptune alone.
For most fandoms, that'd be a memorable point of pain. A big ol' speed bump that ultimately throws some people off the bus, leaving only the die-hards. But the fact that fans had been invested in this relationship for literally 15 years and that Hulu (and creator Rob Thomas) had heavily marketed the new season as being a big romantic event for the ship... it was too much. Unlike the aftermath of the Star Wars sequels, there was no lingering group of die-hard fans who were open to whatever was next — at least no significant one. I did some Googling and could only find TWO people who still wanted another season.
Funnily enough? Critics LOVED this. Hell, Vanity Fair infamously penned an editorial about how Veronica Mars had "finally grown up" with this finale. I suppose all the other murders and deaths and drug overdoses and r*pe weren't "mature" enough before now for... some... reason. (The same editorial also featured the author openly hating on Veronica ever being in a relationship because it causes "arrested development" and declaring that the movie -- which was acclaimed by both critics AND fans alike, I remind you -- was a lame dud. So. The writer must be a reeeaaaal fun person.)
But a series doesn't live based on critical acclaim, as it turns out. The fandom was murdered overnight. "Marshmallows" stopped appearing in geek spaces online entirely. No one expressed interest in seeing the next season or the next movie. The constant flow of fan AMVs on YouTube and fanfics on AO3 dried up to nothing or damn nearly so.
Since 2019 ? Nothing. Chirping crickets. An intensely dedicated fandom of 12 years was just... vaporized.
I've never seen anything like it before OR since.
That's why it's so fucking fascinating.
Tumblr media
So what went wrong?
Creator Rob Thomas was adamant about two things: ONE, the series was intended to be a noir show, which meant there couldn't be any happiness for its protagonist. And TWO, the death of Logan was necessary to evolve and grow the series.
Thomas thought that having Veronica in a relationship would be holding her back, and that a marriage would absolutely kill the series and leave her stagnant. It never even occurred to him that marriage isn't the end of a character's life and growth. It never occurred to him that plenty of drama can be had AFTER someone is married, or that development/growth could be that the characters mature enough to be capable of maintaining a committed relationship. Thomas' view of his own universe was so myopic that he couldn't conceive of any possible way that Veronica could still be a private detective involved in life-threatening investigations AND be married at the same time. Futhermore, he felt that fans just wanted Veronica to become a pregnant housewife, which is about as far from what Marshmallows were after as you can get without straight-up killing Veronica and/or Logan. He managed to do the only thing wronger than what he wrongly thought was their insistence.
Tumblr media
On top of the above, Rob Thomas only viewed "noir" as a vehicle for total fatalism... despite the fact that many of the most famous noir stories are cynical and full of moral ambiguity, but they still feature a positive outcome. The Big Sleep still has the protagonist get the girl. The Set-Up arguably ends with the happiest possible ending in spite of the beating the hero receives.
Perhaps most importantly? Despite Thomas own insistence that Veronica Mars was always "noir," the majority of both TV critics and fans did not think that designation ever truly applied. I suspect that's the reason why Thomas decided to go as dark and fatalistic as possible: He wanted to be noir, and he was being told that he wasn't. So he went so far into noir that he killed his own most popular property.
He was adamant that it was the only way for the series to grow. But as it turns out, it was instead the only way for the series to permanently end. Without that season four finale, a passionate group of fans would still be begging for more. With it? It's over. Nobody fucking cares now.
That's kind of amazing.

pairing - oscar piastri x wife!reader
summary - reader and oscar have been married since they were eighteen and while they both have different career paths they both belong in the F1 industry. reader and her best friend are host for most driver interviews and are also change-makers in the industry. during a race when the two are interviewing the McLaren drivers, an American Williams driver and her best friend decides it the right time to celebrate Oscar and reader’s anniversary
a/n - i kind of came with this while looking at the queen’s (Vivienne Westwood) vintage dresses. also the Mini Bas Relief Pearl choker is so freaking chic. also the reader’s best friend’s name is Lizette and I feel like her and Lando are best friends from like, his karting days so they have like a teasing yet flirty relationship and no they’re not dating but at the same time Lizette and Logan have a plot planning and detective like friendship (idk it felt right)
★ ☆ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“Here we are at the McLaren garage where the two drivers are cooling down from the race.”
“So, Lando how are you feeling?”
Lando has this shit eating grin on his face as Lizette holds the microphone to his face. The raven haired girl gives a gentle and teasing eye roll as Lando places his hands on his hips and gives her a sassy look.
“Uh, like a winner.”
“Are you giving us some of that Scorpio sass?” Y/n asks, quickly switches the microphone from her to Lando.
Lando makes a face which makes both Lizette and Y/n laugh.
“Yes, of course I am.”
“Well, first of all we just want to say congratulations on your podium. You must be very happy, any thoughts you would like to share as you bask in your happiness?” Y/n asks as Lizette copies Lando’s pose with her hands on her hand on her hips.
“Uh, I all I remember is how Lizzy and I made a bet last post-race interview that I could have her sunglasses if I got a podium this weekend.” Lando smirks as he takes Lizette’s baby blue rimmed sunglasses off her head.
The blue eyed girl dramatically gasps and her jaw drops open sarcastically. Lando puts them on and does his best impression of Lizette.
“This is Lizette von Ascheberg and I’m here with Lando Norris. Lando, how you do you feel post-race?” Lando does his best high pitched voice and shoves the microphone in Lizette’s face.
“I think that you should give the microphone back to me because, well, Lizette to be real with you this is currently being live streamed to viewers all across the world.” Lizzie smiles and grips the microphone from Lando.
Lando nods and makes a face before handing Lizette the microphone who hands it to Y/n.
“Right, so back to the interview. How are you feeling?”
“I feel great. I feel like celebrating. And I also feel really sticky from all the champagne.” The Brit places two fingers on the sleeve of his race suit that is tied around his waist and takes a moment to remove his pointer finger as representation that the sweet alcohol has dried into his suit.
“That is a prove that you have a podium today though,”
“You’re not wrong,”
A quick tap on Lando’s back makes him turn around and smile once again.
“Congratulations mate,”
“Thanks, great race today.”
The two McLaren drivers share a short hug and the cameras around them definitely eat it up.
“Here is Oscar Piastri and how you feeling after the race Oscar?” Lizette wastes no time in shoving Y/n out of the way and taking the microphone from her hands, silently motioning to the Williams driver to move in action.
“Well it’s nice to see you again after last race Liz,” Lie. He had just seen her yesterday night when Liz and Y/n decided that it was a good idea to finish the latest episode of The Summer I Turned Pretty while they talked about a bunch girl stuff that Oscar really wished he hadn’t heard in the couple’s hotel room.
“I consider it a really good race for the McLaren team. Both of us finished with no penalties or any major losses of time during pit stop.” Oscar nods along to his words and Lizette nods with him as if she really cared in the moment when she was trying to give Logan a signal.
When the American driver gives Lizzy a thumbs up, she hands Y/n the microphone and shoves her next to Oscar.
“Okay, okay, Y/n/n do you have anything to say?”
“Right, thanks Liz.” Y/n doesn’t hesitate to give her best friend a weird look as she gets moved into place. “Well, it must be fate because today is also an important day as it is-“
“Your fucking fourth anniversary!”
Lizette holds a sign that yells Mr and Mrs Piastri in bright glitter lettering while Logan holds one that says Happy Anniversary, Shawty!.
“I was going to say the last race before the championship race.”
“What about our talks about announcing our marriage when we had the time?”
“Well you guys were taking forever so your best friends had to step in and help.”
“Yeah, that talk was like two years ago. Like hello? Perfect opportunity much?”
Oscar and Y/n are left speechless as everyone around them start to panic and congratulate them. Cameras flash, the crowd yells and cheers, the drivers near the McLaren garage start to question and congratulate the couple while Logan and Lizette stand there high-fiving each other and grinning.
“Well? Thanks guys?” Y/n shrugs an Lizette pulls her into a hug.
“Of course! Now the real question is when are you going to have kids because I need someone to be the rich aunt to.”
“Keep dreaming for a couple for years,” Oscar replies immediately earning a smack on the back of his head from Y/n.
“Yeah, yeah okay whatever. Can we get a picture?” Logan nods and grabs Lizzy’s sign from her hand and places both of them on the ground next to him.
The four of them laugh and the photographers snap photos that they can already imagine the headlines to that will be plaster everywhere in the morning.
“Is that going on the family fridge too?” Lizzie asks Logan teasingly and he plays along nodding his head.
The two friends play around as Oscar and Y/n are left alone in their moment. Well at least that pretend they are as people are still yelling and cheering and cameras are still going off.
He has his hands around her waist and she has her arms wrapped around his neck, their foreheads leaning against each other’s.
“I love you,”
“I love you more,”
“Impossible Piastri,”
The two share a kiss and bask in their own quick moment of happiness. Somehow the cheering gets louder and it is pretty obvious that Lizette and Logan are their biggest fans.
“What? You’re what? Four whole years? What?”
“Guys I think we broke Lando.”
Oops.

YANDERE PARK BUM JAE (JACE PARK) HEADCANONS
Tumblr media
Another one I simp for. Lookism sure doesn't run out of characters to simp for lol
He's another cinnamon roll at heart but with hidden anger, dangerous anger when someone dares to mess with you. As a yandere he would be too over protective, clingy, obsessive and possessive. He literally had a tracking app on his phone to detect the location of his friend Vasco, you think he won't do the same with you? Think again sweetie, this boy here promised to protect you with his very life and soul ever since he laid his eyes on you and it doesn't matter if you both are going out either. He's always your shadow, your protective shadow
As the second head of the Burn Knuckles crew, he's rational and level headed and strives to protect the ones being picked on since that is their motto after all. However he spots you trying to defend little Daniel getting picked on by Logan as usual and he's worried that moron Logan would do something to hurt you. He sees red when Logan leers at you unpleasantly and starts making all sorts of lewd inappropriate comments towards you and your body and he grits his teeth. He strides over and puts a firm hand on Logan's shoulder and asks him to get lost before he ends up with his bones broken. Of course, Logan refuses and when he tries to pull you close to him, that's when Jace loses his patience and ends up kicking his ankle. Logan quickly grits his teeth and is about to punch Jay when he grabs his fist and stared at him with a cold expression before he punched him in the jaw and chest a few times before he got knocked out cold
He usually doesn't resort to violence on school grounds but something about you being in danger just didn't sit right with him. You thanked him with that cute soft shy smile of yours and he felt his heart do a somersault. He swore he felt his heart stop beating the second you held his hands and he became flustered and it was clear he was getting embarrassed and flustered because his ears were getting quite red. He could literally hear wedding bells ringing in his ears and his mind started wandering with all sorts of possibilities of you both getting married
It doesn't matter what major you're in. He'll find out your information one way or another and will get to know everything about you. He promised himself not to fall in love since he feels like he's already married to the Burn Knuckles lol, but whenever he looks at you he just can't help it. You're such a pure little thing in this world filled with toxicity. With the sort of nonsense he has to endure and go through on a daily basis, you're a breath of fresh air for him. He loves every single little gesture you do and all of your features, there are no imperfections in his eyes when it comes to you. He adores the way your face scrunches up in concentration whenever you're concentrating on something, he adores the way your hair strands fall gently into your face and would do anything to be the one to push those hair strands behind your ears and caress your soft cheek
He starts dreaming about you quite often and his mind is occupied with thoughts of you more than he'd like to admit. He feels like he's been blessed by the gods themselves whenever you talk to him and likes talking to you. You'll be the only one apart from Vasco to get to touch his ears and when you do, he'll get all shy and flustered about it which is rather endearing. He might look slightly intimidating at times but he has a soft heart as well and needs some love too
His obsession for you will start when he feels like you're drifting away from him or when he feels like you're in danger from something. He'll always know your location and will personally ensure he's around you at all times, with or without your knowledge at times. What? It's not called stalking if he's simply protecting the one he loves. Of course the other members of the crew will get to know his obsessive feelings for you and instead of calling him out for them they'll just encourage him to pursue you since they're family after all and will do whatever it takes to get him to be with you. Vasco would be quite thrilled that his best friend finally found a special person in his life and as he sheds a manly tear, he'll promise to ensure that you end up with Jace and will have a very protective Burn Knuckles crew looking out for you
He's already gotten hurt plenty of times before which is why he does his best to protect you from all the nonsense happening outside school. He wants you to be in the dark regarding all the gang and crew stuff going on behind the scenes, he doesn't want you getting involved in such messes that could possibly endanger your life. But he also likes it when you patch him up after a fight. He'll feel slightly guilty for putting you under such stress and feels like he's burdening you with his problems but you'll help him anyway. He's really thankful and glad you're in his life and would do anything to make sure you stay in it. His heart melts at your soft comforting touch and the way you gently chide him like a worried parent for their child, it takes immense amount of self control from his side for him to hold you in his arms and just pepper your face in kisses
He wouldn't do anything drastic like kidnapping you or anything but if he senses other people trying to take you away from him, he'll slightly and cleverly isolate you from them by subtle threats towards them. He trusts you with all his heart, it's THEM he doesn't trust. He doesn't want others corrupting your personality and taking advantage of you. He's worried of someone taking advantage of you one fine day which is why he's always with you. You can still hang out with your friends, provided you tell him where you're going, who you're with and after he refers to his files regarding their biodata that would put even the best of the best FBI agents to shame with his detective skills
He's usually calm and logical and rational. But don't mistaken his calmness for his weakness, when someone tries to hurt you or put your life in danger that's when the switch in his personality flips and he will not hesitate to beat that moron who dared to hurt you to a pulp. He doesn't mind getting hurt or beaten up in the process, his only thought is to protect you and will not let you interfere since it might be dangerous for you and you might get hurt which is the last thing he wants. He'll probably send them to the hospital with a few broken bones at best
He might be shy with physical intimacy in public but in private, he likes cuddling with you and holding you in his arms. It gives him a sense of satisfaction and a feeling like he's protecting you from something. You're always welcome to hang out at the Cafe he works at and will get annoyed his coworkers trying to hit on you till he pulls them aside for a 'friendly' chat with an iron grip on their shoulders
The thing is he KNOWS he's being possessive over you but frankly he doesn't really care. He sees it as a way of protecting you and keeping you safe. You're safety is something he will not compromise on no matter what. If you call him out on it he'll accept it and just say it's for your own good. Please don't try to leave him, his heart won't be able to take it and he'll feel quite broken inside
Overall, a good yandere to have and a nightmare for anyone who hurts you

Keith Hudson. Throughout the 2000s, Keith Hudson was a stocky, bearish guy often playing cops or criminals. In the 2010s he got fat. (And I think it looks good on him.- of course I do, don’t I) I don’t know if he allowed himself to get fat thinking this might help his career. You never know. Sometimes being fatter can help if that is the look they are going for, but often it doesn’t help as fat actors feel there is a definite prejudice against them.

The Game is Afoot!
Tumblr media
Photo by Ashni via Unsplash. Edited by edupunkn00b.
Rated: G - WC: 1036 - CW: None
Three weeks after Christmas and Logan is still working on his puzzle from Virgil. Is it any wonder why?
"The game is afoot!"
“But I thought you said Virgil’s game is a puzzle, Logie!”
“Patton! It’s a—” The Moral Side’s head tilted far to the left, brow knit together in deep confusion. Breathing slowly through his mouth as he pinched the bridge of his nose, he nearly missed the quiver at the corner of Patton's mouth. He groaned. “Okay, okay, you got me.”
“So can I play, too?” Patton bounced on the balls of his feet, Watson scarf already tied in a neat knot around his neck.
Logan groaned again. “No, not this time, Patton.”
“Yeah, Popstar, I get to play Watson and Moriarty for this one.”
“Don’t worry, Daddy,” Remus purred from his spot behind the television. “You can help me air fry fish fingers.”
“Um, do fish have fingers?” Patton asked, his perplexed expression genuine this time.
“Doctor Who reference?” Logan asked, eyes darting up from the frayed newspaper in his hands. Christmas had been over two weeks ago and he was still working through the mystery puzzle Virgil had created for him.
The Anxious Side chuckled. “Focus, L…”
“I dunno!” the Creative Side laughed, either not hearing the other two Sides or simply ignoring them, and grabbed Patton’s hand, his new—well, formerly new air fryer tucked under one arm. The thing reeked of a mixture of pickle brine and peat, and its once pristine white plastic casing was charred and cracked on the sides. A neon green mold had begun to grow around the control panel, nearly obscuring a flashing ERR-80085. “Let’s go find out!”
Before Patton could say another word, the two had sunk out to the Imagination.
“And then there were four—err, well,” Logan cleared his throat and returned his attention to the newspaper.
“Yes,” Janus purred from the corner of the couch. “Don’t mind us, we don’t want to play your silly little scavenger hunt—”
“It’s not just a scavenger hunt, Jay! Ugh, why do you—” Virgil cut himself off and adjusted the ties on his hoodie. “Nope, not gonna engage. Not worth it.”
“That’s right, Tall, Dark, and Stormy,” Roman agreed from the staircase. He leapt over the side of the banister with a flourish, the new gold—was that real gold?—trim clinking gently with the impact. “I shall keep the living room safe from any of Janus’ dastardly plans.”
“Oh, no, you caught me drinking wine,” Janus slurred.
“Off you go,” Roman said to Virgil and Logan, pretending not to hear Janus’ mocking. Virgil and Logan exchanged a look. Selective hearing seemed to be a tool in each of the brother’s kits. “I’ve got everything under control here.”
“If you’re sure, Princey,” Virgil began, gaze trained on Janus’ oh-so-innocent expression.
“Wait, Virgil!” Logan grabbed his arm in a remarkable imitation of Remus dragging Patton to the Imagination. He held the newspaper to Virgil’s face. “Does this symbol represent the meter outside?”
Worry shifted into a wicked grin. “Only one way to find out, Detective Holmes.”
“Ha! I knew it!” Logan grinned and ran toward the door, Virgil at his heels.
They flung open the door together and stood on the sunny first step, just as Thomas’ neighbor walked by, well, more like was led by her noisy dog.
“Oh! Good morning, uh, Thomas?” she called as she jogged past, barely managing to slow the pace of her five pound monster of a chihuahua, Craig the Dragon.
“Good morning, Betty!” Logan called quickly, stepping to obscure her view of Virgil’s face. “You’ve met my brother Jake, have you not?”
“Yes, yes, of course…” she agreed, voice fading. She was already three doors down. “Nice to see you, Jake!” Betty called one more time before Craig spotted a lizard in another yard and dashed after it.
“That was close,” Virgil muttered, peering around Logan’s shoulder to watch Betty stamp her foot and shout, Leave it!
“Indeed,” Logan agreed, scanning the newspaper. “Is this the only outdoor clue?”
Virgil nodded, eyes fixed on the race between the lizard and the chihuaha. “Yeah.” The chihuaha won.
“Well, then…” Logan adjusted his deerstalker. “Shall we?”
Another neighbor ran out to help pry the lizard from Craig’s maw and Logan and Virgil used the distraction to swing around to the other side of Thomas’ house. Logan began counting the meters. The final meter in the row showed was lettered LUC.
“Is that meant to be ‘look?’” Logan asked, eyebrow raised.
“What do you want? I was outside and in a rush,” Virgil shrugged, keeping watch around the corner. “L, hurry up, she’s on her way back and I look nothing like Jake.”
Nodding brusquely, Logan examined every inch of the glass casing. Finally, he found a series of tiny scratches. Running his fingers over the markings, he grinned. “Morse code? T-h-e—space—n-e-x-t—space—g-l—Wait—” He rubbed his fingertip over another section. “Ha! You thought you could catch me with pre-1874 Morse code!”
He fell quiet, studying the scratches. “C’mon, L, we gotta get back inside now.”
“Ha!” Logan crowed, triumphantly. He grabbed Virgil’s hand and dashed around the back of the building. “Let’s go through the patio. ‘The next clue is in the kitchen.’”
Virgil was the first to smell smoke. The pair exchanged one last quick look and raced to the door.
Before either could reach it, the patio door slid open with a crash and Patton stumbled out. “They’re moving! The chicken fingers are moving!” he screeched, smacking at his own shoulders. Embers sparked in his hair and on the sleeves of his catigan. A wall of acrid smoke soon followed and they all stepped back.
“Come back, Daddy!” Remus called, his voice and the tromp of boots growing louder. The Creative Side emerged from he smoke, arms full of wriggling—and burnt—breaded somethings. “I think I got ‘em all this time!”
“Remus!” Roman shouted from inside. “They got in my crown!”
“Oops. Almost all of ‘em,” Remus winked and ran back inside. "Keep your pants on, Ro Bro! Believe me—you don't want those little stinkers getting in there!"
The trio shared a moment of confused silence before Janus sauntered out, an uncorked bottle in one hand and a tray of four glasses in the other. “Wine, anyone?”

Some Headcanons from Rain Code
Yuma Kokohead
Yuma knows how to cook, and when he remembered this, he saw no problem at all in preparing a meal for everyone, which sometimes even equates to making a different dish for everyone. Since, rediscovering his predisposition to be a chef, Yuma has practically never left the kitchen. Cooking has become the only thing at which he is now calm and not once does the thought "who is he ?", "is he really a detective ?" fly through his mind. etc. The kitchen, is his kingdom, a quiet place where inventing new dishes, elegantly serving and decorating plates, gives him joy and where he really helps people, effectively killing hunger.
Shinigami
Since she understood that you and Yuma are just friends and you are not her rival/rival for attentions, she also started treating you as a friend. Of course, you only see each other in Myster Labyrinths, once you remember her existence. In the human world, you have no way to communicate, which makes Shnigami sometimes very disappointed. Watching you near Yuma, she noticed that you have a tendency to make origami when forced to sit still. Shinigami often sneaks them and stores them in Yuma's room. She claims and explains this to Yuma that somehow she has to take care of your friendship when she has no way to show you.
Kurumi Wendy
To say that this girl is sweet is as huge an understatement as considering all creatures living in the ocean to be fish. Kurumi is a walking sugar-fueled machine. She could all meals, eat sweet. For her, buying instead of lunch, for example, a whole cake, a tart, or a box of doughnuts and eating them at lunch, is no problem or feat. Of course, out of respect for her health and her teeth, she tries to eat fairly normally, but her craving for sweet, makes it necessary for her to have something sweet to chew on after every meal. This has gone so far that Kurumi, when a sour apple hits her, she makes a grimace as if it were a revulsion. And when she only has snacks like chips and popcorn at home, she makes herself a chocolate dip to dip those chips in.
Aphex Logan
It is known that the boy reacts impulsively, and tries to distance people as much as possible. However, the detective remembers all the days he considers important and likes to return to those moments with his memories. No one knows, but Aphex used to buy a toy in the lottery machines on the day that was important to him. Whether he draws a figurine, a rubber ball, a bracelet doesn't matter to him, what matters is that he has something to remind him of that day. Each of these items has a special place in his room and he cares about them, more than anything. The day you called Aphex a friend was the day the boy won his most precious treasure. He won a cat key ring, which he wears always pinned to the pants of his detective outfit to keep it with him at all times.
Melami Goldmine
Melami, is a huge magnet for dogs. Melami is very careful about what clothes she wears, as well as their neatness, so it's obvious that she doesn't have a pet of any kind. However, despite this, Melami loves dogs, and with great reciprocity. The girl lives in a friendly neighborhood, and more than once it happened that a dog came up and started to cuddle. Of course, any four-legged dog in this situation, was thoroughly stroked by Melami and petted as " budgie". No matter where Melami is, in the city, in the park, or at the home of friends who have dogs, these just fetch. So it's no surprise, a situation in which Melami calls out to a dog, one of her neighbors, "Hey Budgie," then the dog will come running to her with six others.
Pucci Lavmin
By her forte, Pucci whether she wants to or not witnesses many conversations including not one street argument. Because of this, walking around town or riding public transportation is a real horror and anguish for her. She used to use soundproofing headphones, but she is not used to total silence, also felt bad. She needed to hear something in the background, so everywhere she goes, she carries her MP3 player with her headphones with her favorite playlists. It's been a nice escape from so many voices and silly conversations, and in order not to give up this convenience, she's also learned to lip-read and use sign language. This way she doesn't have to take off her headphones as she talks to someone, and also showing a few gestures is easier than saying a whole sentence.
Zilch Alexander
Everyone knows that Zilch loves nature and animals. This has caused him to acquire several animal traits, one of which is that Zilch outright loves it when you pet him on the head and under the chin. Whenever he feels your touch, he feels muted and relaxed, so much so that you can sometimes catch the boy purring quietly. Zilch is too proud to admit it, but he is very comfortable with this way of showing affection. He will never ask you directly, but when the detective sits down next to you and leans his head against your shoulder, it's a clear sign to you that he craves affection.
Zange Eraser
The nickname "Grandpa" has not stuck to him because of the large age gap between him and the other detectives in the group. Zange really is a grandfather to the rest of the detectives. The stories from Zange's life and his old investigations, you can all listen to for hours and for each at least 10 times. Zange is always ready to listen and comfort anyone who is sad, he even carries candy in his pocket for such circumstances. For that, the weekly tea with Zange is important to many in the agency, especially when it comes to you, Yume, Pucci, Zilcha and Fubuki, for you these teas are sacred. Despite the fact that Zange has never been in a long-term relationship and did not ultimately live to see children, this does not prevent him from showing pictures of you and the rest of the young detectives as his grandchildren when talking about grandchildren. The photos of you and the rest of the team even have a special place in his gallery.
Yakou Furio
He has lived in Kanai Ward since he was born, so it is obvious that he is familiar with all the rumors, legends and gossip circulating on the streets of the rainy city. One urban legend that stuck in his mind said that in underground paths and tunnels, people can dissolve without a trace. Yakou had never witnessed, such a situation, nor did he know anyone who had reported such a disappearance, or knew more about it. Nonetheless, ever since you arrived in Kanai Ward, whenever you go through sewers or other underground tunnels together, he intuitively grabs your hand or puts his arm around you. Sam is not sure whether to consider this a myth or take it completely seriously, but he doesn't want to risk losing you.
Halara Nightmare
Believe it or not, but Halara is the type of person who outright loves festivals. Of course, Halara's motivation isn't to have a good time, to have fun, or for the best street treats. Halara goes to festivals for nothing more than the games they can offer at the festival. Sugar cutouts, target shooting, fishing, prize drawings. In everything, Halara aims for the highest prize and wins it without much effort, as well as with complete grace. The best night to fish legitimately is a sin for Halara to skip this event. Of course, food, too, is provided, and it's completely free, because every time, in the spirit of competition, every competition between Halara and Deshuhiko, ended in a severe defeat for the boy, so that he had to fund food for himself, as well as for Halara.
Fubuki Clockford
To say that Fubuki has the memory of a goldfish would be a big insult to fish. Fubuki often gets names wrong, and she often forgets who she looks like. Because of this, every day, she comes up with nicknames for you. Once, when Fubuki came to the agency, she forgot your name, and since just at that moment, you were eating a puff, for the rest of the day she called you "Puff." And so she changed nicknames every day, as you were lying on the couch when she came in, you were "Sleepy Puff," as you changed a burned-out light bulb because Yakou got knocked out of his chair, you were "Radiant." Even when you remind a girl of your name, she prefers made up nicknames.
Deshuhiko Thunderbolt
Deshuhiko, is a favorite of any party. By this I mean events to celebrate a holiday or a specific day. If in his city, there will be such iventy events, Deshuhiko will be the one, the most charismatic and cheerful elf for Christmas, for St. Patrick's Day, he is the most cheerful and loud lepricon, for Halloween he will be the ghost with lots of fun and stories to tell. Deshuhiko enjoys a good pinyin and is so because of his energetic and flamboyant nature. He can effectively draw attention to himself and encourage those gathered to dance or participate in some games. It is also worth mentioning that he is also a favorite among children, as he always has candy and small gifts for the younger company, depending on the disguise he wears. For example, as an elf, he always has candy canes and fake elf ears for children to enter the ranks of Santa's helpers. As a leprikon, he always has chocolate coins in his pockets and stickers in the shape of a rainbow or clover, etc. Deshuhiko, too, knows many of the songs he teaches the children, so not only does everyone have a good time, but the children are curious, keep busy and parents don't have to worry about them. Of course, all the residents realized this when Deshuhiko was assigned to the affair that took place on Independence Day, they realized that without the energetic favorite, the whole event was not so enjoyable.
Vivia Twilight
Everyone knows about his tendency and strange predilection for sitting in dark, cramped or uncomfortable places. Just as the fireplace and the place under the piano used to be his favorite spots, so now, his favorite place, which he would most happily never leave, as if he didn't have to, is the bed after your dog. The boy often lies with his knees curled up, reading a book, because that's where he feels comfortable, and he spends more time with you. The longing for your four-legged friend has taken its toll on you more than you thought, making you long to have your old dog's bed by your side. Thus, seeing the deterioration of your condition Vivia immediately intervenes and tries to comfort you. An additional advantage for Vivia is that you sometimes start to stroke him on the head, as you used to stroke your dog. However, the detective is fine with this, because he likes any kind of attention you give him.

I’m a big fan of Knives Out & Sanders Sides, so I kinda came up with like an angsty fic idea.
Basically, Thomas wants to rehearse a part for a murder themed role he got, so every side plays a part as a suspect (including Thomas) while one side plays the detective. Surprisingly, Thomas nominates Janus, who happily accepts. They go through the scenes and acts, one by one, until it dawns on all of them that the play, kind of relates to a moral incident in Thomas’ life, which one side caused but was never confronted or caught. So, the play continues, but now in an effort to stop the incident cause any more guilt to Thomas.
The circumstances all point to it being Deceit’s fault, however multiple sides can vouch for him and Remus. This meant a light side tried their best to do the right thing, but failed and decided to cover up the mistake and frame Janus so the whole accident can be laid to rest.
At this point, everyone is defending themselves and Thomas doesn’t press it any further since it had no problematic consequences, and all was forgiven even without the culprit being known.
Everyone fades out, Thomas too, except Janus and the culprit.
He knew all along who it was, and is willing to hide their mistake.
Why? Well, they’re having a bit of a tough time.
With what? With working so hard of course! They do so much with little recognition from the others, and instead only being ridiculed and made fun of.
They were bound to slip up. They did with Remus, and he told Janus all about it. It was admirable really. Lying by only using something well known (a fact in fact) to steer suspicion away.
“Really Logan, you did a very good impersonation of me. And I thought I was a master of disguise…”

OKAY GUYS. HERE IT IS…
Xrayshipping / Loganzep headcanons
(this is kinda long so be warned but i beg you to read it i need others to hear me out on this random ship i accidentally created while trying to think of someone to ship logan with)
zep lives au:
so basically i’ve created this au where zep survives because adam wasn’t strong enough to actually bash his head in so zep crawled out of the bathroom (after amanda killed adam or saved adam or whatever you wanna go with) and was able to not get arrested (don’t ask me how because i don’t know. maybe he was able to convince the police he was actually forced to hold alison and diana hostage and come up with a convincing lie that he doesn’t know what happened to detective tapp)
this whole thing could also just be worked into zep just becoming one of john’s apprentices if you ignore that he failed his test. i prefer my interpretation though since i don’t think zep would ever want to be an apprentice.
after his encounter with adam, zep has scars across the side of his face, and there’s very small patches on his head where hair isn’t able to grow anymore. he of course got a severe concussion from the beating too, and he now gets headaches and migraines a lot. (i really don’t know how the scars would look or if the hair thing makes sense and googling “blunt force trauma scars” like my friend suggested… did not work to say the least)
he often wears beanies or has his hood up to try to cover some of the scars. (this later on will lead to logan constantly calling him handsome and beautiful)
obviously zep quits his job at the hospital, and he ends up working at some shitty restaurant in a mall food court where he eventually reunites with logan
zep and logan already vaguely knew each other from working at the same hospital (zep always had a lowkey hallway crush on logan)
logan was shocked to see zep had survived, as john never told him and logan never had any reason to go to the bathroom.
zep was at first unaware that logan was now john’s apprentice, but eventually he figured it out. it made him really nervous at first, which made logan upset. after many conversations with logan, zep grew to trust him again
in general, zep is a lot more on edge after his test, and is almost constantly anxious unless he’s with logan. he’s always scared lawrence is going to find out he’s alive and hunt him down for what he did to alison and diana. (logan would eventually talk to lawrence about it and make sure it was safe for zep to be around the other apprentices… not that zep even wants to be around them that often)
general / cute relationship stuff:
after logan and zep reunite, they start “hanging out” a lot (they’re basically going on dates but neither of them will admit it)
logan is bi and zep is gay and transmasc (no cis man is named sheppard. btw that is his canon full name according to the script ^_^)
zep has never been in a relationship before, so he’s very inexperienced with everything that comes with being in one (but he’s usually not shy about it. just nervous. i dont want him to be some shy blushing twink because he’s NOT that he is a little weirdo)
logan on the other hand has been in some relationships before, but never anything too intense. or anything with a man. so it’s new for both of them.
zep fell in love first, obviously. he was down bad the moment logan was nice to him. logan fell for zep not long after, although he denied it at first.
i also headcanon zep as being autistic, so I think he’d have a lot of unique ways of showing his affection for logan, who would find all of these absolutely adorable. (he’d do something stupid like point at a crushed monster energy can next to a crushed root beer can on the side of the road and be like “that’s so us” and logan would shed a tear out of pure joy)
logan is very careful and gentle with zep, always making sure he’s comfortable and feels safe.
if is an au where adam survives… logan would absolutely detest him for hurting zep. He wouldn’t harm adam, of course, but he would just glare and stare at him angrily while adam tries to figure out wtf is going on. i don’t think zep would hate adam for what happened; he understands very well the circumstances of john’s games.
zep listens to music like oingo boingo and the cure, but logan is a full on country guy and it drives zep insane. eventually logan gets into better music but still brainrot popular radio stuff like nsync & the backstreet boys.
zep will deny this, but he thinks the scars on logan’s back are very attractive in a way. he is actually so physically attracted to logan it makes him dizzy.
random logan headcanon: i think he is southern and moved to [whatever city saw takes place in] when he got older. sometimes his old accent will peak through in his voice, and boy oh boy did zep immediately start having some interesting thoughts about logan dressed as a cowboy the first time he noticed it.
and that’s it for now!! i really wanted to make this post cuz i’ve been fixated on logan & zep for almost two months now and i’ve been completely alone :’) this is all probably really out of character for them but i dont care i love them so much. if anyone makes content of them (PLEASE DO IM BEGGING YOU) feel free to tag me cuz i would absolutely love to see it!!

"It is blank for yourself and Detective Reed, Little Mouse, but not for me."
A blush rose to your cheeks at the unfamiliar nickname, and you sputtered out a response just moments later, confusion and embarrassment evident in your tone,
"L-Little Mouse?"
You asked, your voice cracking a bit as the android in front of you chuckled, a smooth and dark sound that almost made you shiver.
"I thought it was suitable. Similar to a mouse, you are both fragile yet strangely resilient. I thought this might satisfy your desire to have me call you something besides Detective."
You glared up at him, resisting the urge to call him out for his obvious satisfaction about the fact that he had both given you what you wanted while also ceaselessly mocking you for your biological inferiority.
"I have a name you know."
You grumbled back, cheeks still tinted pink as you looked away from your partner, trying to ignore the obvious amusement he was experiencing due to your reaction.
"Of course you do, Detective, and I know it well, But wasn't it you who insisted on giving me a nickname just weeks ago? Am I not allowed to do the same? That does not seem very equal to me."
You swallowed thickly in response to your partners words, his teasing tone making your skin feel warm as your heart beat faster in your chest.
How was he able to switch up on you so quickly?
Desperate to change the subject before your heart gave out, you cleared your throat awkwardly, letting the nickname slide for the time being as you tried to refocus on the case at hand.
"So, you're saying you can see something Reed and I can't? Like invisible ink for androids?"
Nines rolled his eyes at your words, amusement still evident in his tone as he replied shortly thereafter,
"Exactly like invisible ink detective, because it appears Gwyneth was using her own blue blood to write in her diary. This was most likely to ensure her guardians were unable to read it, as it details many of their abhorrent behaviors."
"Like what?"
You asked before you could stop yourself, watching as your partner turned back to the beginning of the diary, searching through a few pages before he began reading, voice low and smooth,
"Eric and Elizabeth beat the twins for speaking to one another today. They will probably be staying home from school for a few days until Eric's strange companion, Scott can repair them, because the identical gashes across their cheeks are showing their inner facial components and false teeth. Eric and Elizabeth are angry about this, and are blaming the twins for having made them so angry. I miss Logan, it's hard to take care of the girls without his help. He always made everything feel better. I think that's why they killed him before the rest of us. I hear them talking about how they like to watch us squirm when they think we're all in stasis mode. I know what they plan to do with us."
The entry was dated as just over three months prior, and as Nines turned a few pages forward you immediately knew what was to come.
"They killed Hallie and Charlotte tonight. I knew that it was coming, but there was nothing I could do to stop them. They pulled them out of the room like I wasn't even here, kicking and screaming, begging to be let go of, pleading for me to save them. I heard them screaming my name, along with Logan's well into the night, even after their vocal modulators started to give out from wear. I don't think I will ever forget the way they sounded after that, inhuman and yet so full of fear. I know deep down that something is wrong with all of this, but I can't bring myself to be afraid. I was created to obey and love Eric and Elizabeth, and I'm not sure what other options I could possibly have besides continuing to do so. I know they'll kill me too, I heard them talking about it at the end of the night, but I don't even think I'm capable of dying. Still, I keep finding myself wanting to whisper into the darkness and hear Charlotte and Hallie's voices whisper back. Logan's too, although I think I got used to not hearing him anymore a long time ago. I will miss my sisters."
This entry was dated for around three months ago, and you cringed upon hearing the gory details of the twins' murders.
Nines must have noticed this, because he was quiet for a few moments after reading that entry, staring down at you for a few more seconds before he flipped forward further until he once again found the page he was looking for,
"I hear them wherever I go. Charlotte, Hallie, and even Logan whisper in my ears when I'm alone, and I can't handle it anymore. I thought the silence without them was hard, but this is so much worse. They keep trying to convince me to do such terrible things to Eric and Elizabeth, begging me in those inhuman voices to do something to them before they can me. They told me that they buried their extra parts beneath the floor within their bedroom, too. I want to check for myself, but I'm afraid that I might actually find something there. I don't want the voices to be right, but they feel so real that I don't think there's any other possibility."
This entry was dated just five days after the previous one, and to your surprise, Nines closed the notebook after he was finished reading it.
You looked up at him, confused about his sudden disinterest in continuing, and he replied almost immediately.
"That is all you need to hear from her. I will tell you the rest as it is pertinent to do so."
You glared at your partner, about to argue when he turned and left the room, walking a bit down and back across the hall in order to reenter the dreaded master suite.
You swallowed thickly, trying not to breathe in through your nose for fear of that dreaded mechanical scent as you moved to stand in the doorway, confused as to what Nines was doing until he reopened the doors to the closet, the same ones you had gazed through earlier before noting how empty it was in there.
If only you had known how wrong you were.
You watched, finding yourself unable to look away as Nines knelt down to closely analyze the floor, his eyes shifting upward to find your own for the briefest of moments before he reached down and slid a heavy piece of metal covered in well camouflaged carpet over to the side. He appeared to be looking downward for a few seconds after this, although you didn't dare approach to see if you were correct about that, not until he turned to look over at you once more, his gaze lingering this time.
"May I borrow your flashlight, Detective?"
Swallowing thickly, you nodded, removing said device from your tool belt before taking a few steps forward and tossing it to your partner, who caught it with incredible ease despite the shakiness of your throw.
Under different circumstances, you would have very likely been impressed.
But right now, you were just trying to remind yourself to breathe through your mouth alone, desperately attempting to ignore the metallic taste that filled your mouth each time that you did.
God, this place was hell.
Nervously, you and a great deal of your coworkers watched as Nines aimed the flashlight's beam towards the square shaped hole in the floor, his expression unchanged even as he gazed at the sight within.
For a few seconds, there was only silence as he leaned back on his heels, flicking off the light before he stood up and walked away from the hole entirely. You were just about to ask him if he'd found anything when he spoke up on his own,
"The three android corpses within that hidden compartment and the fingerprints that are present on them will serve as evidence that Eric and Elizabeth Hughes did in fact murder their own adopted children. I would recommend having someone from forensics and the coroners office come to prepare the remains for transport. They are not in good condition, as it is apparent they sustained a great deal of damage prior to their deactivation."
You felt sadness and discomfort well up in you as Nines confirmed your suspicions regarding what he had found there, walking back towards you in order to request your support away from the scene once more, his cold hand pressing your flashlight back into your palm once he was close enough. The feeling of the cool black metal, ever so slightly warmed by the previously shining bulb encased within it, brought you back to earth a bit, and you sighed before agreeing to follow your partner, even if you knew deep down that whatever he had to tell you couldn't be good.
You were right.
When Nines pulled you away from your coworkers as they prepared the android bodies for transit, he hardly even waited until you were standing at the end of the empty hallway to tell you what he believed to be the truth of the case: That Gwyneth had murdered her guardians.
He told you about what he'd found towards the end of the diary, pages upon pages of rambling describing how the little girl planned to murder the people who were supposed to have been her caretakers. She talked about bleeding them out in the bathtub the way they'd done to her siblings, of burying them beneath the floor boards just as they'd done to Logan, Hallie, and Charlotte.
She had never outright admitted to killing her parents in the diary, but Nines told you that he had absolutely no doubt that she had done exactly as she said she would, first going after Elizabeth downstairs in the kitchen, where the oldest of the blood had been found, before dragging her over to the bathroom to torture and drain her of her blood the exact same way she and her husband had done to Gwyneth's siblings. After that, Nines believed she had gone upstairs to where Eric had likely been resting, and stabbed him until he was unable to fight back. He was unsure what she had used as her weapon, but due to the lack of forensic evidence on the tools in the bathroom, and the neat way they had been arranged, he stated he had little doubt they had been the murder weapons. He then told you of his theory that Gwyneth had used a bloodied blanket that had been found inside the downstairs bathroom to transport a barely alive Eric down the stairs and into the tub without making a mess.
It all made sense, and you couldn't help but hate it.
Whenever the victim turned to something like this, to killing other people, you always felt like a failure. Where had the justice system been when it came to protecting this little girl? Why hadn't anyone noticed sooner how horrifically abused these children were being?
It was all so unfair.
But what Nines told you next felt even worse.
He told you about the number in the downstairs closet, of the implications it had when it came to the immense amounts of thirium that had once been present within this household. Due to the less than pleasant nature of the family, as well as the shady phone number, and the lack of thirium present within the drainage system of the home, Nines suspected that Eric and Elizabeth had sold it for the production of red ice, and that the burner phone number was probably a contact for getting rid of it.
They had abused their children, tortured them, taken their lives, buried their bodies beneath metal and carpeting, and then sold their blood to be used for drug production.
Somehow, it just kept getting worse and worse.
Seeing your obvious emotional response to his words, Nines' expression changed subtly, just enough so that a few officers present at the other end of the hallway stared at the sight of it, shocked at what they were seeing.
You, on the other hand, didn't seem to notice, far too wrapped up in everything you had learned.
But unfortunately, Nines wasn't done yet, proceeding to request a gathering in the downstairs living area of the home in order to update everyone on his theory.
By the time he was done speaking, not even the infamously argumentative Gavin Reed himself took issue with his thoughts regarding the evidence as it was currently known, and everyone was silent, until finally, one of the many officers who had been initially dispatched to the scene spoke up.
"Well, what are you proposing we do about the perpetrator then? Do we send out her image and name even though there are thousands of others just like her?"
Nines shook his head at that, immediately responding,
"Well, the good and bad news about the Hughes' android children is that they were all custom built, which was how they were able to enroll them in school without anyone knowing they were androids. This means that if we needed to alert the media, there would be a fairly reasonable chance she might one day be recognized by someone. The bad part of this is that if they had not been custom built, none of this ever could have occurred as easily in the first place."
The officer nodded in understanding, before you spoke up for the first time in a long time, and almost everyone in the room noticed the way that Nines shifted his body to face you immediately upon hearing your voice, a furrow of what almost appeared to be concern appearing above his brow as he took in what you were saying.
He had looked almost notably worried for a while now, as if your emotional distress was an immense concern rather than a slight setback.
"You're talking like we won't need to alert the media. Does that mean you think we can find her with the evidence we already have alone?"
Nines hummed, a spark of what was almost like pride flickering within him as you caught on easily to his earlier words. His lips were curled at the edges as he replied,
"I do, and that is exactly why I wished to speak to everyone here at once. Due to the evidence I have of the perpetrator, I know for a fact that the chances that she has left this house are slim to none. That being said, I also know the entire layout of this home from having downloaded current and past floor plans and blue prints, and there doesn't seem to be anywhere she could be hiding where we would not have already located her. Does anyone have any suggestions?"
Everything was completely silent until suddenly, Gavin spoke up from the other side of the living room,
"I might have a lead."
Five minutes later, everyone was standing upstairs in the scarcely decorated children's bedroom, crowding around the window.
"This was open when I got here."
Reed explained, his arms crossed as he avoided eye contact with the android who was standing in front of him,
"I asked the cops who were first to the scene, and they said they hadn't even been up here to open the window at all."
The RK900 model nodded in response, looking over to you before he turned his gaze back towards the window, noting that there was almost no available ground to stand on outside of this portion of the house due to a fence, therefore making it difficult for someone to go outside and look at what was visible from below.
Well then, clearly he would need to get creative in his approach.
He turned towards you fully now, his voice clear and highly confident as he spoke,
"Detective, hold my legs, I am going to get a picture of the above area on this side of the house."
You raised your brows in response, but did as your partner asked, allowing him to get situated with his back against the wooden window sill before he slowly began easing himself outside further, keeping his torso upright without any support in a manner that would have been nearly impossible for any human being.
You grasped Nines' body by the calves, both arms wrapped around them as you did your best to ensure he wouldn't fall out the window due to any potential external pressures.
It was a stressful job.
"Nines?"
You called out after a few moments, hearing a dull click before a chuckle came from outside of the window,
"Yes, Little Mouse?"
You felt your face burn in embarrassment as multiple of your coworkers murmured to one another upon hearing the condescending nickname.
God, this was humiliating.
"Are you almost done? This is making me nervous."
That chuckle came again, much closer this time, and the calves beneath your arms bent in a manner that let you know Nines had sat up once more.
You looked up at him in obvious surprise, dropping your arms from around his legs seconds later as he looked down at you, clearly amused at your previous unnecessary concerns,
"Whatever for, Detective? Were you worried about me?"
His tone was serious, but had a mocking lilt to it that made you glare up at your partner, crossing your arms,
"More like worried about me. You're a three million dollar piece of equipment, Nines, and it would have been my ass if you fell two stories and needing replacing for it."
Humming, your partner lowered himself back inside fully, standing tall and proud above you as he brushed the dirt from the window sill off of his uniform,
"Whatever you say, Detective."
Not long afterward, yourself and the rest of your coworkers were sitting all around the room, analyzing the photo that Nines had taken with great interest and confusion.
Above the window Nines had taken the photo from by using his ocular cameras, it was apparent that there was in fact another story to the house, something you and Nines had been aware of already.
But, what was interesting was the fact that leading up to the rather small window, large pieces of metal could be seen sticking out of the house, almost like they had been placed there by someone in an effort to reach the window a full story above.
"If Gwyneth is anywhere in this house, it's there."
Nines said matter of factly, and everyone turned to face him as he spoke,
"The only thing we need to do now is send someone up there to check it out."
Everyone was silent, none of them particularly eager to go and risk meeting a potentially homicidal little android girl in a dark attic that hadn't been touched by any human being for decades.
And on top of that, there was the whole other issue of the size of the window. No grown man would fit through that easily, least of all the RK900 who was arguably most suited for this particular job. Nines was a big guy, standing at over six feet tall with incredibly broad shoulders that could never dream of fitting into such a small space, especially not when no part of his body could be considered even the least bit pliable.
Nines had not been made to be soft, to mold himself to fit into particular spaces, he was supposed to create those spaces regardless of risk.
But this was not his original task, and this was not something he could brute force his way into.
Someone else would have to go up there, and they would have to do it alone.
"I'll do it." you said, your voice small but confident even as you shook a bit while standing to meet your partners harsh and scrutinizing gaze.
Nines watched you, looking you up and down slowly before he sighed, glancing about the room as if waiting for someone else, anyone else to volunteer.
Nobody did.
He sighed.
"Are you sure you're up for this?"
He asked, approaching you slowly, running scan after scan to check your vitals in an effort to discern fully whether or not this was a good idea.
But no matter what he did, there was no answer he could find that was entirely certain and without risk.
And he hated that.
"This case seems to have shaken you, Detective. I do not want you to take any unnecessary risks. The entire case could be jeopardized based upon your actions."
His words were very normal for him, so very Nines in nature, but the worry within his gaze was not. He didn't want you to take such a huge risk unless you felt confident you could come out the other side unscathed.
You nodded in response to his words,
"I'm sure, Nines. Let me do this."
Your partner watched you, his jaw clenching and unclenching repeatedly until finally, he relented,
"As you wish, Detective. We will aim to have you heading up within the hour. Please prepare yourself accordingly."
Nines spoke like he intended to have no involvement with said preparation, but for the next thirty five minutes he spent every moment of his time going over plans with you, creating back up plan after back up plan for probability after probability until you had the audacity to compare him to his predecessor due to his obvious anxiety pertaining to your success.
That had shut him up until your final five minutes prior to your journey, which was when he came to present you with his gun.
You had never really told anyone, but you didn't like to carry a lethal weapon on you during work hours unless you were instructed to. Nines knew that, and was evidently all too aware of the fact that you'd arrived on the scene today weaponless. But rather than chastising you for that, as he had done many times in the past, he simply held out his gun, watching as you accepted it gingerly, holstering it away with a nod of appreciation.
You didn't know what to say.
Since becoming your partner, Nines had accidentally become one of the most important people in your life.
You saw him nearly every single day, and whether he considered the two of you to be close or not, you had actually started to think of him as a friend rather than just your partner.
Even still, you couldn't bring yourself to say that to his face, no matter how scary the situation at hand happened to be.
You were just about to try and get something, anything out when Nines spoke up,
"You will make it out of this unharmed, Detective."
His tone was stern and certain as he spoke, his grey eyes hardened in a way that may have actually frightened you just a few weeks prior.
But now?
Now it was all too familiar to make you feel anything but strangely at ease.
He continued a few seconds later, his expression remaining ever unchanged,
"I swear it. I will not allow anything bad to happen to you. Not now, and not in the future. That is the promise I made as your partner, and I intend to keep it."
You smiled up at Nines, the first one he had seen in a few hours, and he watched as you reached your hand out, grabbing one of his as it lay limply at his side to grasp it within your own, a sign of strength and confidence that was almost able to put him at ease.
Almost.
"I trust you, Nines."
You said, and you could have sworn you saw that hardened stare soften for a moment before he blinked that tenderness away in favor of his usual harsh expression.
Your partner nodded in response to your words, a small smile appearing at the edges of his lips as he replied earnestly,
"And I you, Little Mouse."
There was silence between the two of you for a few moments before you both let go of one another's hands, allowing the peace and quiet to permeate the environment before Nines spoke up once more, his voice a bit softer than the last time he had given you instructions pertaining to your mission,
"I will be on the ground below along with everyone else currently present. If you need anything at all, just call for me. I will hear it. We removed the fence to ensure there is enough room for everybody to remain safely outside the premises so no one will be of your concern."
You nodded softly, swallowing thickly as you glanced outside to see your coworkers on the grass below, anxiously awaiting your ascent to the abandoned attic.
It was now or never.
You looked back to Nines, giving him one last nervous smile before you made your way over to the window. You sat there on the windowsill, listening to your peers chat below, until you saw the familiar form of your partner stride outside to stand with them, giving you the signal to head upward. You gave him a stern nod in response, and stood at the edge of the sill, grasping on to one of the sturdy metal rungs that had been stuck into the side of the house and pulling yourself upward.
You repeated this process of slowly moving up until finally, you reached the window, which you could now see was slightly ajar. Praying that the age of the noticeably warped wood wouldn't cause it to squeak and give you away, you pushed the window the rest of the way up slowly before making your way inside feet first in the very same manner that your partner had instructed you to less than an hour before. Allowing the fading natural light to guide your way, you slowly pressed forward into the dusty attic, fear welling up inside you as the silence took over all other sounds.
It was far too quiet in here. And you didn't feel nearly as alone as you'd hoped you would.
"Hello? Gwyneth? Are you there?"
The sound of your voice in the tense silence surprised you, and you swallowed thickly as you watched the room ahead of you for any signs of movement.
Nothing.
"I know you're probably afraid, and maybe even injured, but I'm not here to hurt you. I know what happened, and I know why too. It wasn't your fault. Please let me help you."
At that, you heard the sound of something gentle padding against the thin wood floors, reminding you of exactly how old the dampened floor boards in here were, unsturdy and sagging beneath your feet.
You remained silent and rooted to the spot, watching as a little girl, presumably Gwyneth, stepped closer to the light that was streaming in through the window.
Her blonde hair caught the sun gently, and you almost flinched at the harsh stench of blood that hit you as she grew closer. She was covered in it, from head to toe, and that became more and more evident as her hair caught the nearly dying light once more. It was an almost coppery orange due to how long the blood had been setting into it, and it was knotted in a way that made you feel bad for her.
"Hi."
You all but breathed out, smiling down at the little girl who stood in front of you, her gaze aimed downward and her expression somber. It was hard to tell what she was feeling, let alone what she was thinking within such a dark space, but even still you tried to remain calm, reminding yourself that she never would have done the things she had if not for the abuse she'd endured.
"My name is Y/n. I'm a detective with the Detroit Police Department. I'm here to he-"
"The Detroit Police Department?"
The little girl asked suddenly, her gaze briefly meeting yours, eyes shining with excitement,
"Have you ever met Connor?"
You were taken aback for a moment, confused about what she meant before you smiled, nodding softly,
"I have. He's a friend actually. I'm sure he would love to meet you if you were willing to come down to the department with me to answer a few questions."
At that, Gwyneth actually smiled up at you, her eyes shining as she nodded enthusiastically,
"Sure!"
You almost flinched at her loud outburst, but smiled back nonetheless, calling down to your coworkers to share the news.
Only their response was less than stellar.
In fact, it turned out to be deadly.
"Fuck yeah, Rookie, show that little bitch whose boss!"
You all but flinched at Gavin's words as he shouted them up at you, and you quickly realized he must have believed you had neutralized the child rather than just talked her into coming of her own free will.
And that was where the trouble started.
Multiple of your coworkers cried out in agreement, and you saw the excitement turn to fear as the little girl stepped backwards into the darkness once more. Desperate to help, you followed, trying to explain yourself as you went, to no avail.
The cries of victory from below, alongside the shouts about the victims receiving justice, was all too much for the young android to handle, and, in an effort to get herself out of her situation, Gwyneth began to aggressively slam her head against the floor, and you gasped in horror as it began to splinter beneath her, falling away in various areas due to decay and a lack of upkeep. If she kept this up, the entire house would be going down with her.
"Fuck!"
You cursed, trying to get close enough to reach her, praying that you could stop her onslaught of self inflicted violence, only to realize the floor was growing weaker and weaker by the moment, the whole house feeling as if it were shaking as the load bearing walls below you groaned out of effort and strain.
You were already too late.
Fear gripped your heart as you realized your situation, your legs shaking as you rushed back to the window, knowing all too well that you wouldn't have enough time to climb down before the whole house collapsed beneath you.
Cursing over and over, you had to fight to stay on your feet as fear overcame you, tears beginning to fall and slide down your cheeks as the realization hit you that you were going to die here, in an unfamiliar house, having failed at your job. You had been unable to save Gwyneth, and now you would be unable to save yourself as well.
But then, over the sounds of the varying cries of fear and shock below, you heard him, and an almost overwhelming sense of comfort briefly trumped your fear.
"Nines."
You breathed out, listening closely as the man below called up to you,
"Detective, you need to jump, now!"
His tone was aggressive, almost angry, and decidedly fearful as he desperately tried to get through to you.
"I will catch you. Remember what I said earlier. I will not let you come to harm, not now, not ever."
His confident tone, the certainty in his voice, and the familiarity of his presence unfroze your fear driven mind, and, deciding to take your last chance at life, you shouted back a strained,
"Okay!"
Down to your partner, knowing full well that it would be all he needed to get prepared to catch you.
You closed your eyes for a moment, trying to ignore the sounds of the world all but falling apart around you as you placed your feet on the window sill, gripping the upper portion of it for dear life as you stepped up and out of the house.
You looked down at everyone for a brief moment, your only safety being the wood grasped within your hands and lying beneath your feet. And this wood wasn't going to last much longer.
Swallowing thickly, you closed your eyes one final time, thinking back to your previous conversation with Nines, back before everything had gone to shit.
"I trust you."
You whispered out softly, allowing your body to slowly fall forward until there was nothing left to hold you up, the air rushing past you as you fell nearly three stories towards the ground below.

The Plan so far
So, this blog was a very spontaneous idea I had yesterday (very late in the evening). So I took some time to think it through today, as well as get some more lists from other Fanders.
The plan now is to first create lists for the separate facets of the Thomas Sanders fandom, i.e. Sanders Sides, Shorts Characters, Cartoon Therapy and Roleslaying with Roman. (I'm sorry that this means I need to split up Remy and Emile for now, we'll get to crossovers later.)
For that to work, I need a comprehensive list of characters first. So this is my call for your help! I'll put a list of who I got so far after the cut and you can reply to this post or send me an ask about more characters I can/should include!

❝ Eli had almost always been obsessed with killers. From a very young age - most would say too young to be interested in a subject so morbid - Eli had watched as many serial killer documentaries and read as many books by journalists and family members of the killers as he could get his hands on, until he knew almost everything there was to know about American serial killers. He recite all the details of John Wayne Gacy's case from memory, debate about Jack the Ripper theories for hours, and once the Aileen Wuornos movie came out, he watched it so many times he was able to repeat it almost word for word (because, he would always say, woman killers deserved recognition too).
Of course, none of this was to say that Eli was disturbed, or that he had the potential to be a killer himself. Perhaps he was disturbed, but coming from a home with an emotionally abusive mother and a father who loved him but had never actually had the guts to take his son out of their awful situation, Eli would've said he was no more disturbed than anyone else who'd come from a similar home. No, while he might have been intrigued by the stories of serial killers and the investigations into them, he was always horrified and disgusted by the killings he read about, and besides, it had always been the police investigations that had fascinated him most. He loved reading about the bold police detectives who searched tirelessly for clues to solve the murders and brought the killers to justice, and as a hurting young boy reading these books under his covers at night, he longed to one day be one of those detectives with the power to put bad guys away where they belonged.
It was no surprise to anyone who knew him, then, when Eli had started working for the FBI as an adult. Originally taking a job with the Counterterrorism Division, Eli found himself not satisfied with the position, his childhood dreams of hunting down serial killers constantly replaying in his head. So, after six years with the Bureau, Eli applies to be reassigned to the Behavioral Analysis Unit, or BAU, and finally makes his morbid youthful fantasies come true by being assigned to Aaron Hotchner's team of profilers.
Eli, who's always been skilled at making friends, is quick to establish himself as a member of the chaotic little family that is this team. But he's also quickly intrigued by Spencer Reid, a socially awkward genius with unfairly nice hair.
Eli Logan had no intentions of finding a romantic partner when he first lobbied to be assigned to the BAU... but maybe, in the midst of all this murder and chaos and boring post-case paperwork, that might just be what happens anyway. ❞

One thing you learn about Madripoor is that when you first arrived there, you got a firsthand look and experience on just how handy having a street education here would be. The thieves, killers, and every other asshole around this criminal island nation would've loved nothing more than to sell somebody's healthy limb for a hundred grand and the finest steak that an establishment in Hightown could offer, and that was the ceiling for most folks who tried to make it and survive in Lowtown. You took on whatever jobs and opportunities you could to make it in this place and get paid, and even when you got paid, you had to hope like fucking hell that nobody would actually get the guts to just up and rob you. For someone like Logan, who was ex-military and a whole other list of ex-things that weren't important at the moment, he took an opportunity and he made the most of it. By running some jobs for someone of influence and power named Tyger Tiger, Logan had found a way to actually gain some decent cash and start moving up in the world. Of course, to avoid any type of detection from the outside world and those who might've known him, he took on the identity of Patch, and people who tried to rub elbows with Logan either got shown up or got parts of their bodies cut off, and there wasn't any negotiating with him, even if it made sense. A bit cynical and jaded, he still had a certain sense of honor to him and everything. It was just...untraditional.
Right now though, everything else was unimportant. At one of the more notable Hightown hotels, Logan was getting everything he wanted right now and then some. Her name was Miharu or something to that degree, and while they hadn't exactly traveled in the same circles, they had laid eyes upon one another at one of the blackjack tables downstairs, and that was more than enough for both of them to have the same idea travel through their minds. Upstairs they went, and here they were, with Miharu on her back in one of the most comfortable, luxurious beds Logan could ever recall himself being in, plowing Miharu down with the length of his cock, the heavy metal of the adamantium skeleton he branded weighing down the Korean woman's body a bit more than she might've expected him to. Her hands were pinned right above her head, allowing the Wolverine to control the action here, rolling his hip muscles forward and continuing to thrust into his partner for the evening without skipping a beat. He made sure that their lips connected deeply, feeling heavy breathing exhale through both of their own nostrils at how deeply steamed the anticipated kiss was, only escalating it further with a series of them. "Come on darlin', show me what you can do," Logan taunted her, his length fully entrenching itself into her core, only getting Logan juiced up with momentum and excitement even further.

Idea - Sanders Sides "Psych" (2006) AU
Janus - Lassiter
Juliet - Patton
Vick - Virgil
Woody - Remus
Now, I know you're wondering who would be Shawn and Gus, as they are the main characters. I say to you, the roles are shared by Logan and Roman. I'll use a version of the first episode as an example:
Logan and Roman are hanging out, talking, when Logan makes a quick call to the police station with an anonymous tip. Janus, who is on the other end, realizes that this number has called in a suspicious amount of anonymous tips, and requests for the caller to come to the station. Logan, confused, goes, and Roman comes with him.
When they get there, Janus accuses Logan of being a criminal, and Roman quickly covers for him by saying he's psychic. The two of them have a typically comical argument about this when Janus goes to get his partner, as Logan doesn't believe in psychics and resents being associated with them; Roman resents Logan apparently preferring to be arrested.
When Janus comes back with Patton, Logan is resigned to keeping up the charade until they can be released. Patton, of course, is incredibly excited about meeting a "real psychic", and his support bolsters Roman to start making more and more claims about Logan's "prodigious abilities", until Patton exclaims that maybe the psychic can help them with a case they're stuck on. Roman (enthusiastically) and Logan (hesitantly) agree, and as they work on the case, Virgil shows up, asking why there are civilians on their investigation.
Janus starts in on how he didn't want them and still thinks they should arrest them, but he is drowned out by Roman and Patton explaining that the psychic and his "assistant" are being consulted on the case. Virgil is about to order them off (and possibly to be detained) when Logan, who was not paying any attention to the argument, interrupts with the most promising lead thus far, so Virgil relents, but parts by saying they are still being held under suspicion.
The episode continues, and Logan and Roman solve the case (with Logan providing the near-photographic memory and precision, as well as most of the worry over continually lying to the police, while Roman provides the classic Shawn charisma, easily imagined half-truths, and cavalier attitude toward the rules). After a bit, they meet Remus, the extremely weird but somehow eerily competent coroner!
Janus continues to not believe a word the dynamic duo say, but infuriatingly can't hold on to a shred of evidence, while Patton seems to trust them implicitly. Virgil lets the two pseudo-detectives become regular consultants (especially after Roman sets them up a mostly legitimate business), but is still delightfully snarky and skeptical (whether he actually believes all that "psychic" racket is yet to be seen).
Other than this, who knows!
Is Thomas Shawn's dad?
How does Juliet's brother figure into this?
Mr. Yang? (And, come to think of that, Mary Lightly?)
Despereaux?
I surely don't have a clue. It's your problem now.

Prince of Hearts
Summary: Each side has a special sight, allowing them to see things according to their function. Like Virgil being able to see fears and worries physically or in someone’s mind. Roman can see too. As the prince of romance, he can see his fellow sides’ hearts, able to know when they’re heartbroken or healing. He’s grateful only he can see hearts though. Roman’s own heart is broken and he has yet to let it heal so no one needs to see that yet.
(A/N: It took me a long time but I've finally written this idea down! I'm dedicating this to my lovely dear @enigmasalad who stuck with me when I wanted to rip my own heart out. Thank you for healing my heart, mi amor!)
Pairings: Prinxiety if you squint, BROTHERLY CREATIVITWINS
WARNINGS: slight mention of blood, implied gore but no actual gore, slight description of a cut
Each of the sides have a special sight. They each can see things according to their functions.
Logan can see the logic of things and the factual aspect of things, allowing him to learn here and there as well as guide those who need it. Patton can see the others’ inner warmth, allowing him to see who is cold and hurting and in need of warm love. Virgil can see fears and worries, able to detect what’s scaring or worrying his little family so he can fight them off.
Remus can see the worst and darkest of thoughts and sometimes it’s delightful while other times…it’s just kinda sad. Of course, Janus can see lies and truths and through disguises that aren’t his. He can tell when something is even the slightest bit off with a person or object.
And Roman? He can see hearts.
Roman not only handles Thomas’ creativity, but he’s also romance and passion manifested. So, he is able to see the others’ hearts. He can see who’s low on love and passion. He can see where they’re healing, where they’ve been broken, and its little cracks and scars.
Roman has seen all of the others’ hearts and he’s glad they’re all healing little by little after everything that’s happened. He can still remember the many times he’s seen those precious hearts falling apart in pain and in dark times.
Roman remembers Patton’s heart and how it would crack more and more as he bottled up his feelings. He remembers how it burst in the end and it came back together when Patton accepted that he wasn’t okay and took some time to heal.
Roman also remembers Logan’s heart and how slow his heartbreak was, the logical side too stubborn to admit his feelings. He recalls how the heart throbbed more and more, wanting to burst but ending up crumbling into tiny pieces instead before slowly reforming again as if it had stronger reinforcements.
Then there was the time Roman saw Virgil’s wounded heart pounding in worry and fear. He remembers feeling pity for the poor thing, seeing such a scarred heart. It made Roman wonder what Virgil had gone through.
Then Roman saw Janus’ heart and half of it was broken and the other half was scarred. It made Roman feel guilty, wondering if he did that or if Janus had his own dark past. And then there’s Remus. Roman was a bit surprised to see Remus even had a heart but that surprise turned into heavy guilt as he saw Remus’ heart. It was heavily scarred and broken…and it looked like it had been mended over and over.
Then there was Roman’s own heart. It was…well…It was the biggest out of everyone’s, full of passion and love for his work and his family. It was loud and pounded with bravery and joy, exuding the creative energy he uses every day. At least that’s how it used to be when everything was okay. Then things weren’t okay and they never were again.
Roman’s heart weakened and shrunk as if were hollow. Then it shattered loudly like glass. Roman hadn’t know what to do or who to ask so he repaired his own heart.
But just as he had healed it…his heart had been broken again. So the vicious and painful cycle started. His heart would get broken and he’d repair it again.
Over and over and over it continued until Roman grew tired of trying to repair his heart. He accepted that it was broken forever and it couldn’t be healed so he gave up trying, taking advantage of the fact that no one can even see it.
Sometimes though…Roman looks at his heart and wishes he could rip it out along with his real heart. It’s a thought Remus would be proud of and concerned about but it’s one thought Roman can’t stop thinking of. It’s just…why keep something broken? Why have a heart if it only breaks over and over and it hurts?
Maybe Logan was right about not feeling things. Sadly, Roman can’t rip his heart out. He’s needed by Thomas. Or, well, his ideas are needed. His creative work is needed. Roman himself? Well, clearly the others have made it clear he isn’t needed.
The thoughts alone make Roman’s heart crack again. He’s lost count of how many cracks and scars he’s got across his heart. He doesn’t know anymore how many times he’s felt it throb and ache in pain. He’s used to all of it by now, ignoring the pain and the scars. He has an image to uphold and no one needs to see his battered, aching heart. Besides, they’ve all held his heart and left it destroyed. Why would he let them hold it again?
This is how Roman finds himself sitting in his chair at the dining table, having tuned out today’s discussion as he wasn’t needed yet. That stung a little but he doesn’t argue. Making a scene won’t do any good here. Instead, he keeps staring at his heart as it rests in his palm. It beats slowly, almost tiredly.
It used to be a bright red but it’s long faded over the years as his passion and love dwindled. His eyes then travel across the cracks and scars. His fingers twitch with the urge to crush the little thing into pieces until he can feel nothing. His thumb just barely digs into the surface. He doesn’t notice Remus or Janus watching him subtly.
Remus had long grown bored of the discussion as Patton babbled on and on about whatever. The intrusive side had stopped paying attention a while back. He had been chewing on the pen he stole from Logan when he glanced over at his twin. He can see him pressing at his palm with his thumb and he hums curiously, wondering what his brother is thinking of.
He usually doesn’t look into the others’ thoughts much since they’re often boring but he’s been peeking in on Roman’s lately. They’ve been growing more and more dark each day. It’s worrying though Remus will never admit that to anyone. So, Remus peeks into Roman’s mind and-
Just one squeeze…
It’ll hurt less…
Can’t trust them…
Want to rip it out…
It hurts…
Don’t want this anymore.
No more.
No more.
No more.
No-
Remus pulls out of those thoughts with a soft gasp which he quickly hides with a cough. He knows Janus saw him though and he shakes his head at Janus, mouthing a ‘later’ at him before glancing at Roman. The creative side is still staring at his hand, running his thumbnail across his palm over and over. It makes Remus grow a little concerned for his twin. Sure, he doesn’t act like it but he does care for Roman in his own ways.
Meanwhile, Roman is oblivious to everything, still running his thumb over his heart. It beats weakly, slowly, tiredly. He so badly wants to squeeze it until it breaks and bursts. He wants to rip it out and tear it into shreds. He’s tired of having a broken heart. It hurts too much and the others have no idea. Of course they don’t. They can’t see it. They can’t see his heart. They can’t see-
“Roman?”
Roman jumps, blinking as he’s pulled away from his darkening thoughts.
“Y-Yes?”
“I was asking you a question. Are you lost in your daydreams again?” Logan asks, that stern look on his face.
“I-I’m sorry, Specs. I suppose I was.” Roman smiles sheepishly.
Janus hides his one glowing eye as him and Remus glance at the prince.
Logan merely adjusts his glass.
“I’m not surprised. Please do pay attention. This discussion is beneficial for our next meeting with Thomas. Even if Creative input may not be needed.” he lectures before returning to the original topic.
Remus has to resist throwing another shuriken at the logical side’s forehead for that harsh comment. He glances at Roman again. His twin is staring at it his hand again and he frowns. The intrusive side peeks into his twin’s thoughts again.
No daydreams.
Daydreams are bad.
I’ll rip my brain out too.
After I rip my heart out.
My heart hurts.
I don’t want my heart.
No more heart.
No more pain.
They can’t see anyways.
They can’t see.
They don’t see-
Remus pulls out of those thoughts and glances at his twin. Is that what he sees? His own heart? He blinks and gazes at Roman, eyebrows slightly creased in concern. He doesn’t see what heart Roman is thinking about. He’s still…staring at his hand, dragging the nail of his thumb across the dry skin of his palm over and over as if he were trying to cut something.
It makes Remus want to say something but not even a little nasty thought comes to mind. It’s quiet in his head and it terrifies him. Remus can’t do much but squirm in his seat out of restlessness. As he shifts in his seat again, he hears Janus hiss softly.
“Janus?” Remus whispers, glancing at him in worry.
“Roman…he’s lying.” Janus mutters, pulling the brim of his hat down to hide the glow of his eye once again. “I can hear them.”
Janus looks over to Roman again. He hadn’t meant to tune into the prince’s dark thoughts but he could practically hear the lies screaming inside the Creative side. He’s heard the others’ lies but they were more like hushed whispers. Secrets not meant to be ever, ever told.
Roman’s, however, sounded like a cacophony of cries. It’s like the prince was hoping someone would hear them if it screamed loud enough. And it seemed to grow ever louder.
IT DOESN’T HURT
IT DOESN’T HURT
IT DOESN’T HURT
IT’S OKAY
IT’S OKAY
I’M OKAY
“Shit.” Janus hisses softly, biting his lip.
“Jan?” Remus squeezes his arm.
“His lies. They sound so agonizing.”
The two glance at Roman.
“Oh, RoRo…what’s going on in that messy head of yours?” Remus whispered.
The rest of the meeting continues as Logan lectures on and on. Remus and Janus continue watching Roman as said prince continues to remain oblivious. He barely registers if anyone is watching him. He hasn’t noticed Virgil glance his way with an anxious look or Janus letting out another soft hiss. He doesn’t hear Remus whimper softly out of worry for his twin. He doesn’t even move when Patton says his name or when Logan gives him a disappointed glance that makes Remus want to rip the logical side’s face off.
Roman just keeps staring at his heart. His thumb running over the growing cracks and digging deeper with each line. Just one rip or squeeze. Anything to rip this old heart apart. Just one tear or two or three and maybe it won’t hurt anymore. He starts to count the lines with each trace.
One, two, three more times he drags his thumbnail, driving it into the ravine of his glass heart.
Four, five, six more and he hardly notices the angry red line he’s creating on the palm of his hand.
Seven, eight, nine lines he’s traced, trying to dig even deeper. Deep enough to severe this wounded heart into pieces.
Ten-
“RoRo, stop, you’re bleeding!”
Roman blinks and gazes down at his hand. The heart isn’t there anymore. Just his hand…His bloody hand…Roman stares at his hand again a little longer, wishing it were his heart instead. He frowns and runs his thumb over the line again, barely flinching at the sting. He’s felt much, much worse anyways. He just wants it to stop. He doesn’t like hurting anymore. Obviously, he can’t duck out but-
“RoRo!”
Roman looks up and Remus is right there in front of him, hands on his shoulders, the others behind him staring at him.
“RoRo, are you…okay?” Remus asks, voice unusually soft and worried.
It makes Roman want to cry and give in but what do they care? They’ll just do the routine again. He’ll cry, they’ll worry and prod, he’ll tell them his burdens, they’ll assure him and comfort him, and then once he’s on his feet, the others will leave again.
Roman smiles weakly instead.
“I’m okay.”
And then he sunk out as tears pricked his eyes.
Roman sinks up into his room and the tears fall along with the weak smile as he crumples to the floor. How could Remus ask him that? He never cared. He should be happy with the bloodshed. That’s what he wanted right?
And the others…they wouldn’t care either. Roman chokes, stuck between broken laughter and agonizing sobs. It hurts so much, realizing that he’ll always have a broken heart. It hurts even worse, knowing he’ll always have it inside him…unless…
The princes stands up, not caring that he’s still bleeding or crying. His other hand presses at his chest as he drives it deep inside. There’s a reason why the sides’ bodies weren’t as real as Thomas’. For once, Roman’s glad they’re metaphysical. It’ll be less messy.
Roman digs around and around. It’s here somewhere…there! He feels his heart’s fragile glass, threatening to crack any second. He’s tempted to leave it there until it breaks again so the shards can stab him from the inside but really, he’s sick and tired of feeling it beat and throb and break. So with a growl, he pulls.
And he pulls.
And pulls.
And pulls.
And…
The prince finally rips his heart out with an agonizing cry.
Roman nearly sags in relief, finally free of the heavy pain and ache. He nearly falls again and his wounded hand grips at the sink. He feels tired now but he glances at his heart. It beats ever so weaker and it’s become so small. But that’s okay. He doesn’t need it. Not anymore.
Roman stares at the damned thing and…he laughs. He laughs and laughs until it hurts. Until tears start streaming down his face. He laughs as he staggers back to his room, falling to the floor with one final thought.
I’m finally free.
And Roman’s heart stops beating as it falls to the floor and shatters into pieces.
----
Before he could even sink out of his chair, Remus screams in pain and doubles over.
“Remus! Remus, what is it?” comes Janus’ voice from his beside him.
Remus hisses, clutching his chest.
“H-Hurts!”
“What hurts? Are you hiding an injury again?”
“N-No! R-Roman, I can feel him! He’s-ngh!” Remus cries out again. “He’s hurt!”
“Remus,” Janus tries to ask only to be cut off by another cry.
“N-Need to help RoRo! Now!”
Before Janus can ask further, Remus tears out of his hold and braces through the pain, dashing out of the kitchen and up the stairs. As he stumbles up the final steps, Remus tries to listen for his brother’s thoughts but he’s only met with dead silence. This terrifies him and makes the intrusive side hurry down the hall.
When he gets to the door, Remus doesn’t even bother knocking. He musters some strength and bulldozes right through. Then Remus freezes up.
“RoRo!”
Roman lays unconscious on the floor, his colors now dull like his dead eyes. The wound on his hand had long stopped bleeding but has yet to heal. His room felt cold and dark. It’s as if something or someone were missing from it. Like the life of the room itself was…gone.
Remus is immediately at his twin’s side, pulling his body onto his lap. Shaky hands move to turn Roman’s face towards him and for the first time, it makes Remus actually sick to see his twin like this. No silly smile, no excessive glitter, no rainbow blush or even his glow. It’s completely wrong. It’s not Roman at all. It makes Remus sick and angry. With a low growl, Remus summons everyone to Roman’s room.
“Remus, I told you not to-oh. Oh no.” Janus steps forward, kneeling down.
“I hate it when you-oh shit, Roman!” Virgil is immediately on Roman’s other side.
“Remus, you know it’s rude to-oh goodness!” Patton’s hands fly to his mouth in shock.
“What did you have to summon me here for-oh. Oh dear.” Logan falls speechless.
Remus sniffs and glares at the others, eyes glowing red as he holds his twin protectively.
“What happened to him? I. want. Answers.” he growls.
“W-We don’t know, Remus. Honest. We haven’t noticed anything off with Roman.” Patton replies with a gulp.
“Yeah, Princey said he was fine yesterday.” Virgil stammers, wringing his hands.
Remus huffs and looks to Janus.
“They’re both telling the truth.” Janus hums then frowns, looking up with a glowing eye. “But there seems to be a lie in there.”
Remus glares at Patton and Virgil again then to Janus.
“What is it? What’s the lie?” he asks.
Janus looks at Roman and shakes his head.
“That Roman is fine. He is very far from fine.” he sighs. “He lied to Virgil.”
Virgil blinks and frowns.
“But he…he looked fine…Didn’t he?”
Janus shakes his head.
“Our prince is a better actor than we give him credit for.”
“Oh, Roman…have we been hurting you all this time?” Patton sniffs, taking a step closer.
Remus only growls ferally and holds Roman closer, making Patton yelp and jump back.
“It’s alright, Remus. They won’t harm him.” Janus assures him, squeezing his shoulder.
“They already did. I don’t trust them not to do so again.” he huffs. “The only reason they aren’t splattered all over my mace and across the walls yet is because I know RoRo doesn’t want me to hurt them.”
Janus gazes at Roman’s face, guilt pooling in his stomach. Despite their rocky relationship, the prince never once wished harm towards him. Not even through Remus. And in return, Janus could only keep hurting him. What had he done?
“Roman’s been hurt a lot. I think…he’s been carrying so much weight that he’s buckled over from it.” The snake side sadly mutters a moment later. “He’s exhausted.”
Remus sighs and fixes Roman’s hair the best he can, tucking in that one stray curl.
“He looks more than exhausted, Jan. He looks fucking dead. Like the life has been ripped out of him.” he mumbles.
At the same time, Patton gasps softly and all eyes are on him.
“Roman…he’s…he’s so cold inside. How did I not see?” he sniffs, his tears falling.
“Cold?” Remus tilts his head.
“I can see when one of you are feeling cold inside from feeling bad or hurt. It helps me know when to provide warmth and love.” Patton explains, hands shaking with the want to warm Roman.
That’s when Virgil realizes something too.
“Oh fuck…Yesterday when I asked Roman how he was doing…I felt something off but I didn’t question it. I thought…fuck, I thought he was nervous about his trip to the Imagination or today’s meeting.” he explains, pausing to take in a shaky breath. “I didn’t know how much he was hiding until earlier today when he cut his hand. He panicked and he was scared about us finding out something then…it was just…gone. Like he wasn’t scared anymore.”
“You can see things too?” Logan questions.
Virgil nods, a hand hovering over Roman to touch him. When Remus approves, Virgil holds one of Roman’s hands. It feels cold.
“I can. I see fears and worries but I try not to pry unless I needed to.” he mutters. “I should’ve looked into Roman’s though.”
Remus huffs.
“Don’t blame yourself too much. Roman was just too good at hiding things.” he mumbles before sighing. “I saw his thoughts though. They…They were fucked up. Like, super fucked up for someone like Ro who usually has sunshine and love coming out of his ass.”
The intrusive side still remembers Roman’s thoughts from earlier. So dark. So painful. So loud.
Logan gazes at Roman and frowns.
“I can’t see anything logical. Or any facts.” he gasps before flustering and clarifying, “I can’t see anything there to help me with Roman other than his title and traits. I do see insecure, burned out, and…oh. Oh, Roman…”
Roman Sanders is brokenhearted.
And Logan averts his gaze as guilt sinks in. He’s hardly felt this much guilt before. But now, it feels like a growing weight as he wonders how much Roman internalized his words. All of it.
“Logan?” Patton shakes him out of his trance.
“I…I have hurt Roman a lot…haven’t I?” the logical side whispers, a lump in his throat. “Everything I’ve said and done to him…I didn’t think Roman took it that much to heart. I-I thought—"
“You thought you were knocking RoRo down a peg or two? Oh, you did. You knocked him down so hard his self-esteem is fucking broken.” Remus cuts in with a growl.
Logan bows his head in shame, his dignity long gone.
“Sometimes I forget that Roman is also The Ego. I never realized how much my words had impact on him. Did…Did I push him too far?”
“I think…we all did. We all hurt Roman in many ways and we didn’t realize it.” Janus hisses. “But we still don’t know what he did to himself.”
Remus sucks in a breath as he feels another wave of pain.
“Whatever it is, it really fucking hurts. It’s like something’s…missing. Something’s gone from Roman and it feels like something’s missing from me too.” he shudders, a free hand on his chest. “Ugh, it feels like something’s been ripped out of me.”
Janus blinks and glances between the twins.
“Like…a heart?”
“Yeah…wait what?” Remus asks, confused. “What are you talking about, Janus?”
Janus places a hand on Roman’s chest, shuddering at how he can’t feel the prince’s once mighty heartbeat. Not that he knew what his heartbeat was like.
“Everyone here mentioned what they could see. For you and me, Remus, it’s quite obvious. For Roman, we can’t see what he does. So what if Roman can see hearts?”
“It…It makes sense.” Logan gasps, eyes widening in revelation. “Roman is not only Creativity or the Ego. He is passion and…love…”
“S-So Roman could see our hearts? Even when they were broken?” Patton squeaks, tears pricking the corners of his eyes. His poor, poor kiddo.
Janus and Logan nod.
“He always did know what to do when we were hurting. We never realized how…or that he did it to hide his own heart.” Janus whispers, turning away as a single tear rolls down his cheek.
Roman was always there for everyone, comforting them and cheering them up. He set aside his own broken heart to be there for the others. No one even bothered to help him. No one noticed how desperate he was for someone to hold his heart and fill it with love and warmth or how scared he was to even give his heart away. Roman made sure that everyone came first.
Now, here was Roman. Lifeless. Loveless. Empty. And they all blamed themselves. Janus had manipulated him, threatening him with every weakness he could find like it were blackmail.
Logan knew what words to use to keep Roman in line, to shut him down and put him in his place.
Patton pressured him too much, piled expectation upon expectation and never gave the prince a chance to defend himself. Whenever Roman tried to express himself or voice his opinion, Patton would unknowingly guilt trip him back into compliance.
Virgil belittled him every chance he got, throwing insults at Roman and never once apologized because Roman was always being told off. Even if he was hurt all the same.
Remus tried so hard to be a better brother but The Voices often got too loud or he’d hit him too hard.
It's dead silent for a moment before Remus sniffles. Remus never cries so it’s almost an alarming sound to the others.
“How do we fix it? How do we fix his heart?” he asks, his voice painfully small and broken. His eyes looking Roman over. He misses his loud, colorful brother.
“Well…Broken hearts need love, right?” Patton replies. “We just have to love Roman more.”
Remus can’t help but huff and scoff at that.
“Oh, now he says that.” he mutters.
He knows Patton wants to help but after seeing how the fatherly side betrayed Roman at his weakest, even the intrusive side himself couldn’t trust him. It makes Remus hold Roman just a little tighter, another tear rolling down his cheek and onto Roman’s face.
Janus, however, knows Remus well and squeezes his shoulder.
“Remus, you have to let them in so they can try to help. They won’t hurt Roman anymore. Not now when they know the truth.” he sighs before gazing down at Roman’s pale face. “Besides, we’re both guilty of hurting Roman too.”
Remus droops and sniffs.
“You’re right…I just…I want to be a better brother for RoRo so we can be friends again. I swore he’d never be hurt again but I failed.” he whispers brokenly, running a thumb over one of Roman’s scar on his cheek. “I want to help too.”
Janus dries Remus’ tears.
“You already are, Remus. Now,” he gestures to the others who were standing by and waiting. “Let them in.”
Remus looks up at the two, breathing in shakily. He glances at Roman then back at them.
“Fine.” he huffs but puts a hand up before they could move. “But I’m watching all of you. And not a word about what I said earlier. I still have a reputation to keep because you shitheads need to learn when to back off from RoRo.”
Virgil chuckles softly, face hidden in his hoodie.
“We know, Remus. Your secret is safe with us.” he promises, squeezing Roman’s hand.
Remus, slightly flustered, huffs and looks back at his twin.
“Let’s just help Ro already.” he mumbles.
It’s awkwardly silent for a moment before Janus decides to step forward, kneeling down in front of the prince. He removes his right glove and takes Roman’s other hand, squeezing it gently.
“I may have apologized before but I’ll do it again. I…I am so, so sorry, my dear prince. I never noticed how much harm I have caused you. I never saw your broken heart. I was meant to protect you.” he says, gazing at Roman’s sash then his face as if he were reminiscing. “I promised myself I would and I didn’t. For that, I’m very sorry and I know mere words may not fix everything but know that I will do what it takes to earn your forgiveness. Know that you are very much loved. You are our prince. Our Roman. We need you more than you think.”
Janus squeezes Roman’s hand and leans over, planting a kiss on his forehead. When nothing happens, Janus lets go and replaces his glove as he gazes sadly at the sleeping prince.
It’s then that Virgil feels brave and swallows his nerves, taking a deep breath.
“Fuck, uh, I’m going next.” he gulps, moving closer to Roman and pulling his hood down.
A clammy hand moves to caress Roman’s cheek.
“Hey, Princey…I’ve been a shitty friend, huh? You’ve made up with me and always did your best to make me feel welcome and included here on your side. You always fight off my worries and…” Virgil pauses and flusters. “You were the only one who really knew how to calm me down. And yet, I hurt you without realizing it. You never really did get an apology or even a chance to defend yourself. It was always me that got away with it. I guess I should’ve pumped the breaks too.”
Virgil takes in a shaky breath, eyeshadow darker than ever. He then continues.
“I’m so fucking sorry. For everything. For hurting you. For all my awful words. For constantly making fun of you when you work so hard.” he mutters before smiling softly. “You know…we were an awesome team at the mall. Yeah, I freaked out but if you weren’t there, I don’t think I could’ve pushed Thomas into meeting Nico. Literally. You were always so much braver than me and I wanted to be just as brave too. I…We love you, Roman. Flaws and all. I wish you could see that. I wish you could see how much you do for us.”
He then leans down and kisses Roman’s cheek, face flushed.
Janus can’t help but chuckle a little.
“How cute. Though, were you going to say something else there, Virgil? I thought I heard something else…” he teases.
Virgil blinks and reddens, glaring at Janus for a moment.
“S-Shut the fuck up, asshole.”
Remus raises an eyebrow at that.
“We’re talking about that later, emo.” he says, grinning slightly.
Virgil swallows again and nods, letting Roman go so Remus can hold him again.
“R-Right, yeah. Whatever. Who’s next?”
Logan steps forward, kneeling beside Virgil.
“May I, Remus?” he asks first.
Remus huffs but loosens his hold on Roman.
“Thank you.”
Logan then takes Roman’s hand, gazing at it. Oh, the poor thing’s hand looks so worn. So tired.
He can feel the callouses on his fingertips and the scars on his skin. He wonders just how much Roman often pushed himself to meet everyone’s demands. Especially the logical side’s own requests. He can’t help but feel guilty. Both he and Roman do a lot of work for Thomas and everyone but he always treated Roman like he was never working enough or that he was only worth 0.5% of Thomas’ day.
Glancing around the mess that is Roman’s room, Logan realizes just how hard Roman works.
There’s stacks of papers piled on the desk and a big cork board above it, covered in notes and reminders on top of a calendar filled with scribbles. Several books are stacked on the other side of the desk with sticky note tabs jutting out from them in different pages. Logan realizes too that he should visit Roman more often and brainstorm here. He then turns back to Roman, squeezing his hand.
“Roman…I’m sorry. For every word I said. For underestimating you. For using your weaknesses against you whenever we argued. For making you question your worth. You are worth so much more and I failed to notice.” he sniffles regretfully, failing to keep his voice from breaking. “You work just as hard and I understand what it’s like to see your efforts go to waste. I should have been there for you. Especially since you’ve worked so hard to be better for us. You don’t have to. You were enough. You were so good enough. I apologize for never realizing how much my words have broken your heart. You’re not stupid or a fool or worthless. You are Prince Roman of Creativity. You are important and needed.”
Logan kisses Roman’s hand because he’s unsure of what else to do before letting go.
He then turns to remove his glasses and scrub at his face before turning back.
“I…I hope Roman can hear us.” he stammers, clearing his throat.
“I hope so too.” Patton nods. He had been lost in thought. He kneels beside Logan, tears already rolling down his cheeks. “C-Can I go next, Remus?”
Remus nods.
“Just watch yourself, froggy.” he mutters.
“I will. Thank you.”
Patton then takes Roman’s hand, squeezing it too.
“Oh, kiddo…I’m so, so sorry. I’m supposed to be the dad that takes care of everyone but I failed to take care of you. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry!” he sobs, hiccupping and sniffling. “I should’ve been there. I should’ve listened to you too. I shouldn’t have weighed you down with all those expectations. You always make us feel happy and loved. You know how to cheer us up and you make us feel so safe. In return, we made you feel as if you had to hide. As if you had to play your role perfectly. You can take a break, Roman. You can let your guard down. You aren’t weak for your mistakes. We still love you. You are part of our family and we can’t be whole without you. We need you too!”
Patton then breaks down and sobs harder into Roman’s hand, kissing it. When he manages to calm down a bit, he reluctantly lets Roman’s hand go.
Silence falls back in as everyone watches Roman. Remus then realizes it’s his turn and sighs, staring at his twin. He then glances at the others who are waiting for Remus to speak.
“Look,” Remus huffs. “I…I don’t usually do this mushy, gushy shit so don’t fucking judge me if I say all the wrong stuff, okay? RoRo and I have our own brand of showing we care.”
“Of course, Remus. Your secret is safe with me.”
“Yeah, Remus. You’ve always been more of an action guy. I know.”
“We know, Remus. You’re a good brother, kiddo.”
“Understandable. This is between you and your brother.”
Remus nods his thanks and turns back to his brother, taking a deep breath. One hand holds Roman’s and the other tugs at the sash, turning it so a messily embroidered “R” in green is shown at the bottom.
“RoRo? Why didn’t you tell me you were feeling bad again? Why do you keep hiding? I know I’m not always the nicest brother but I’m trying. The voices are assholes sometimes, y’know? Yeah, I said I wanted you dead but I didn’t mean it. I still need you here. You’re my literal other half.” he whispers sadly, his hand moving to tug at his own sash which has its own embroidered “R” but in golden cursive this time.
Remus breathes out shakily, more tears rolling down makeup-streaked cheeks as he continues.
“Even though you were jealous of me. Sometimes I was jealous of you. You could create without fail. You could heal and fix whatever I messed up. I…I always thought you were amazing, little brother. Even when everyone else didn’t think so or were too blind to see it. Please come back, RoRo. We royal promised we’d be brothers forever and you can’t break that promise. We still gotta annoy Logan and mess with Virgil. We were supposed to hang out with Janus too so you guys can be friends. S-So wake up already you dramatic fuck. Wake up!”
Then Remus sobs and it’s…actually gut wrenching to hear. No one besides Janus and maybe Virgil has ever heard the Intrusive side cry like this. Sure, the twins don’t get along but it’s clear now that they really need each other.
“Shh, he’ll be okay, little squid. We’ll love him as much as he needs.” comes Janus’ soft voice, a hand rubbing Remus’ shaking back.
Then…
As everyone cries over their fallen prince, there’s a golden spark in the corner of the room and warm glow fills the room as that spark rises from the floor. The sides gaze at the spark as it rises higher and higher, moving towards the center of the room.
Then glass-like shards appear one by one in different colors. Green, Yellow, Purple, Cyan, Navy blue, Red. They spin around the spark and come together forming…a heart.
Sometimes, metaphorical hearts are compared to glass, tough during the hardest moments and fragile during the weakest moments. Easy to shatter, harder to put the pieces back together.
But love makes it easier to keep the pieces together and it seems it did for this heart. The heart spins and lowers, moving towards its home. To Roman. It stays there though. Ripping out a heart is difficult and it would be just as hard to put it back in.
Remus then blinks.
“I-I can see it. I can see RoRo’s heart. What do I do?! I don’t know how to heal. I’m gonna mess it up.” he stammers.
Janus squeezes his shoulder.
“Hey, it’s alright, Remus. You can do it. You want to help your brother, yes?”
Remus nods.
“I do but…” his hands hesitate above the heart. It looks very fragile. “I don’t want to hurt him again.”
Oh Remus…
Janus smiles softly and puts his hand over Remus’ shaking pair.
“You won’t, my dear. I’m right here too.” he soothes, squeezing Remus’ hand to still his shaking.
Another pair of hands join, pale and clammy and just as shaky.
“I-I wanna help Roman’s heart too.” Virgil nods.
Remus nods.
“For Roman.”
Patton and Logan step forward, both nervous and still guilty.
“C-Can we help too, Remus? We want to make this right.” Patton asks, wringing his hands.
He owed Roman lots of love and care after lacking the past years.
Logan nods too.
“I want to atone for what I’ve done. For what I’ve said. I want to remove every awful word I must have buried in there.” he manages to choke out, not even caring that his face is wet with tears again.
Remus breathes in and nods.
“You can but it’ll take more than this for Roman to heal so you both definitely have a lot to make up for. Fuck that up and I’ll have your heads before Roman can even stop me.” he growls, glaring at them.
“We won’t hurt him anymore, Remus. We promise.” Patton assures the dark twin.
“We’ll be kinder to him. Give him the love he needs.” Logan adds.
“You better.” Remus huffs. “Now get over here.”
The two nod and place their hands over Virgil’s.
Then they gently push the heart down into Roman’s chest, slowly and carefully.
“Wake up, RoRo. Please don’t rip your heart out again.”
“Come back to us, little prince. We need you so much.”
“We’re here, Princey. We see you and hear you.”
“Please take your heart, Roman. It is a vital part of who you are. Our dear prince.”
“Oh, kiddo. Don’t worry, I’ll be here to help you if your heart hurts again. I’ll give you all the warmth you need.”
They push down more and more and slowly the heart sinks into Roman’s chest. Once it’s fully in, a golden ray of light blooms from Roman’s body as if the heart were thanking them for returning it home. Then-
“RoRo!” Remus gasps.
With a sparkle of magic and gold, Roman’s color slowly returns. It starts from his feet and climbs up, his sash bright red again and his skin turning back to its beautiful tan color. Even Roman’s eyes regain life, the dull green brightening back into a lovely emerald.
Then Roman gasps for air.
---
Roman doesn’t know how long he’d been out but he hadn’t expected to wake up. When he does, he gasps for air and squirms in the pair of arms he’s in before looking about. His eyes widen. They’re…They’re all here. Why are they here? This isn’t right. This isn’t how it’s supposed to end.
No, no, no. Why did they fix it again? They’re just gonna break it. He’s gonna break it again and-
“RoRo! Hey, hey, it’s okay. You’re okay.”
Roman shakes his head, squirming out of whoever is holding him.
“No, no! It’s not! It’s not okay!”
He stumbles to his feet but someone grabs his arm.
“Roman, look at me.”
Roman whips his head around and he sees…Remus?
“R-Ree…”
“Hey, dumb dumb. It’s okay now. It’s okay.” Remus soothes, his voice unusually soft.
Remus doesn’t look like it but he can be soft during the right times. It’s not often he shows it though. It’s often reserved for his brother since the poor thing doesn’t do well with tough love.
Roman, stubborn as ever, shakes his head as his breath hitches.
“It’s not! I-It wasn’t supposed to be fixed! It wasn’t supposed to go back inside!” he cries, clutching at his chest.
Janus takes that moment to take Roman’s hands in his, the snake’s gloves nowhere to be seen.
“Roman, my dear prince, look at me.”
“J-Janus?” Roman gazes at him, confused and lost. Poor, poor thing.
“There’s that pretty face, beautiful rose. You look so tired. So weary. We’ve hurt you a lot, haven’t we?” Janus replies, caressing Roman’s cheek.
Roman can’t help but lean into his touch. It makes Janus’ heart ache.
“W-What’s…What’s happening?”
“That’s what we want to know, my prince.”
Roman blinks.
“We…?”
The prince then looks around and he’s startled to see the others here too. His head feels dizzy as he looks between every face in front of him.
Patton looks antsy as if he were itching to give a hug. Logan looks remorseful, gaze averted in shame.
Virgil looks very worried, eyeshadow messy and dark while his hands twist into the fabric of his hoodie. Remus and Janus are the closest to him, smiling small but sadly in concern.
It makes Roman pull away from Janus, hugging himself as if it was going to protect him.
“I…How did you even know I was here?” he asks.
Remus squeezes Roman’s shoulder.
“Twin bond. I knew you did something to yourself the moment I felt like I was stabbed.” he sighs, a hand over his own heart. “I felt your pain, Roman.”
Roman swallows and shrinks in on himself.
“Oh…I…I forget that you often feel what I do, Ree. I’m sorry.” he mumbles.
“Don’t be. It’s not your fault, RoRo.” Remus sighs. “So, do you want to tell us why your heart was outside of you?”
Roman hangs his head in shame. The words are on his lips and he so badly wants to tell them everything. Yet, he feels hesitant. What if, after they comfort him, they go back to what they were doing and they end up breaking his heart again? What if they’re only doing this to make sure Thomas still has his Creativity and not Roman himself? What if they’re doing this make themselves feel better and they’ll drop him later?
“Hey. Princey. Roman, look at me.”
Roman looks up and blinks, seeing Virgil standing in front of him.
“V-Virgil…”
Virgil cups his face and wipes a stray tear.
“Let us in, Roman. We want to help you.”
“Y-You do?”
“Of course. We all do.”
“But…But it’s rotten work…”
Virgil chuckles. He missed Roman’s little movie references.
“Not to me, it’s not. Not if it’s you.”
Roman blinks and takes a deep breath.
“Okay.”
Virgil takes that moment to let Roman go.
“Take your time, Princey.”
Roman nods, still hugging himself.
Then after a moment of silence-
“I ripped my heart out.” Roman whispers like it’s still a secret. “I ripped my heart out because it was broken and it hurt inside. I was tired of feeling it break and be fixed over and over. I was tired of feeling hurt all the time.”
Soft gasps fill the room.
“Oh, Roman…”
Roman places a hand over his chest where his heart his now.
“I guess you all figured it out but I can see hearts. I can see who needs love or passion. I can see broken hearts. I knew none of you could see mine so I never bothered to fix mine. I thought it was too broken and…”
Roman gazes at Patton then Logan and then Janus, the three of them wilting in guilt.
“I was scared.” Roman whimpers. “I didn’t want to give my heart to someone who might break it again and again. I’ve put my heart into all your hands and…”
“A-And we broke it, didn’t we?” Patton whispers with guilt and anger at himself in his voice. “I’m so sorry, kiddo. We didn’t know how fragile your heart already was.”
Roman sighs.
“It’s okay—”
“Stop right there. It’s not okay, little one.” Janus cuts in. “We all hurt you and made you feel as if you couldn’t show your heart to us. We should be apologizing to you.”
“B-But what if you break it all over again?”
Oh, Roman…
Janus can’t help but feel guilt churning in his stomach again. Part of him feels like he’s majorly to blame for the prince’s trust issue.
It’s no wonder the poor thing can’t reach out or open up. He’d become too afraid to ask for love let alone even try, thinking he’d be slapped in the face with rejection or be called out for being overdramatic again.
It’s a horrifying realization to Janus and he holds up his right hand.
“I promise you that we won’t. Not anymore, my prince. We all love you more than you’ll ever know.” Janus swears. “I know you might not believe it but it’s true.”
Roman feels his heart and…oh. It’s…It’s beating so much. It really wants to be loved. He wants to be loved. So much.
“Please be careful with my heart.”
Janus smiles softly.
“I will, my prince. We all will.”
Remus squeezes his shoulder again.
“We won’t let you feel the need to rip your heart again, RoRo.” he adds.
“You’re okay now, Princey. We’ll take care of you.”
“We love you so much, kiddo! We’ll always love you!”
“I may not be the best with love and affection but I will do my best to be here for you too, Roman. You are worth more than you think.”
Roman blinks.
“Oh.”
Overwhelmed by all the sudden love, Roman forgets all his words and his legs give out as he falls to his knees. Oh dear.
Remus is immediately at his side.
“RoRo?”
Roman trembles.
“I just…you all…I…”
Then the prince finally lets out the tears he’s bottled up. His broken sobs fill the room like a sorrowful song.
Remus whimpers and holds his twin tight.
“You’ve been keeping that in for so long, huh? Just let it out, RoRo. We’re right here.” he whispers. “You’re going to be okay, little brother.”
Janus decides to join too, kneeling and wrapping his arms around the twins.
“You’ve been through so much, little prince. Let yourself cry. We’ll dry your tears.” he murmurs.
Virgil crouches in front of them and squeezes Roman’s shoulder this time.
“You’re safe, Roman. I’m here to protect you and your heart.” he assures him.
Logan and Patton join too.
“We love you, Roman. We love you.” Patton repeats over and over to remind Roman as he promised.
“We’re here, Roman.” Logan adds.
Roman cries and cries until he can’t and it dwindles into soft hiccups and sniffles. He doesn’t pull away from Remus though, not wanting him to leave. He desperately wants to believe this all real.
As he holds onto Remus and feels his family around him, Roman feels his heart beating peacefully now. Of course, the pain is still there and will be for a long time. Yet, he can feel some of it ebb away.
It’s difficult to heal a broken heart but with enough love, it can be free of its pain little by little. It’s definitely going to be a long time of healing for Roman and his heart but each side makes a silent vow to help him along the way.
And maybe in the future, Janus steps up as the Ego’s protector and carer. He’s there to hold him when he cries and to stand up for him when the world seems against him. He helps Roman be more open with his feelings and takes care of him when his days start to get dark. He does his best to silence the lies in the prince’s mind.
Virgil is a little more careful and kinder. He still banters with Roman but apologizes this time when he goes too far or says something hurtful. He’ll be more alert, slowly helping Roman tell him all his fears and worries so he can help him through it. At some point, Virgil and Roman even sit down and go over what insults might be too far or a sore spot, both promising never to use them against each other.
In the future, Patton is softer around Roman, doing his best to be understanding. He makes sure to hear Roman out and checks in on him when he sees him feeling cold inside. He loves him a little more and puts out a big effort to listen to Roman in discussions and works more with him to find compromises or better ideas to dilemmas. And if Patton hears Roman say an ‘I love you, padre” one day, he cherishes it.
Logan is a lot less harsh with Roman, helping him with his work and being understanding when Roman asks for a break. He’s more careful in giving Roman feedback to his ideas, starting with what he liked and ending with suggestions for improvement. He also makes sure to remind Roman that he’s very much worth a lot more than he thinks. And when they start arguing, Logan reminds himself of Roman’s heart and pauses to let them both cool down before talking to Roman again.
And as for Remus, he tries the hardest out of everyone. He’s still his chaotic self, often pestering Roman but also getting along with him better. They do still fight like siblings but when Roman’s hurt, Remus is there to pick him up and hold him. He does his best to cheer Roman up when he’s sad and they take more trips to the Imagination to just hang out when Roman doesn’t want to be overwhelmed by the others.
With all this love for the prince, Roman’s heart would feel fuller than ever. It would finally be on the mend and Roman would come to see that it won’t ever be broken again. Not with his family there to keep the pieces together.
For now though, Roman lets his family hold him as his heart keeps beating inside him where it’s meant to be.

Rain Code Chapter 0, and why its Twist F*cking Sucks.
This is going to be the start of a series I call "My Gripes with Master Detective Archives: Rain Code". Unfortunately, they are quite numerous, but I figure it's better for me to split them up rather then write one massive post complaining about it.
Because yeah, I did the writer's equivalent of a rage quit on this game, and it breaks my heart. Not only because the writing doesn't work, but because IT HAD THE POTENTIAL TO.
And what better place to start this then the Massacre on the Amaterasu Express, and why shock value is not good writing.
Spoilers for Chapter 0 of Rain Code, and also for Danganronpa 1, 2, V3, and UDG.
Tumblr media
Right off the bat, we're introduced to five other characters besides our infamous protagonist, Yuma Kokohead. Aphex Logan, Melami Goldmine, Pucci Lavmin, Zilch Alexander, and Zange Eraser. They're introduced, provide a bit of exposition to Yuma and the player, and their dynamics seem pretty solid so far. Each of them has room to develop, there's hints that Pucci might be a love interest of sorts to Yuma, and some of even show off cool powers that definitely might come in handy in later cases. But then what happens?
They're all f*cking killed. They last twenty minutes before every single one of them, including the culprit, all die off-screen.
SO YEAH. IF YOU'RE ANYTHING AT ALL LIKE ME, YOU'RE MAD. Not upset, not devastated seeing characters you like die.
F*CKING. MAD.
What Kodaka seems to have forgotten when writing Chapter 0, is that there's a reason the deaths in the Danganronpa series work. THEY EXPLICITLY PUT THE IDEA OF MURDER INTO YOUR HEAD. From the very moment Monokuma is introduced in DR1, he says directly, without any sugarcoating, that the only way the characters can get out of permanent imprisonment is to kill someone and get away with it.
The writers don't say who will die (ignoring the whole 11037 thing), because they don't NEED TO. They know the player is smart enough to use context clues and figure out, "Hey, Sayaka and Makoto have been getting awfully chummy, chances are she's probably kicking the bucket." It makes sense, there's payoff, and the moments leading up to that are meant to build connection between the player and the characters.
WHAT PAYOFF IS THERE IN RAIN CODE CHAPTER 0'S TWIST?!
There is none, because Kodaka forgot to give us, the player, any semblance of a hint aside from the chapter's title that maaaaaybe these characters aren't gonna live much longer so try to avoid getting attached.
And no, saying "it's made by the same people who made Danganronpa so it's on you for not expecting that" does not suffice here. Even if Rain Code were established to be part of the same universe or whatnot (it's not), why didn't they give us a bit more warning?
WHAT IS THE POINT OF INTRODUCING THESE CHARACTERS IN THE FIRST PLACE IF THEY'RE ALL GONNA DIE WITHIN TWENTY MINUTES OF MEETING THEM?
The short answer is: shock value.
Take a look at Kodaka's writing, and you'll find that he adores shock value. Between the protagonist swap in V3, the divisive "it's a lie!!" ending, and a handful of deaths throughout the series (Taka, Hiyoko, Yuta Asahina), and it becomes entirely clear that payoff isn't his top priority. It's pulling the rug from under our feet, watching us land on the floor, and when we say, "WTF Kodaka?!", his response is probably, "IDK what to tell you fam, you really should've seen that coming."
No, my dude. Of course I didn't see this twist coming. Because you did a terrible job with your foreshadowing. You introduced five characters whose only purpose is to improve your marketing by showcasing a bigger cast on the game's cover art, vaguely hinted at potential development in later chapters, and then did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WITH THEM.
As a writer, I despise shock value. Not hinting at a twist properly beforehand almost never works, and when it does, it falls in line with what we know about the story and the stakes. But by the time the stakes are set up in Rain Code, Aphex and the others are already gone, so their deaths don't really matter.
If Aphex, Melami, Pucci, Zilch and Zange didn't exist, THIS STORY WOULD'VE PANNED OUT THE EXACT SAME WAY. Nobody mentions these characters again anyway, SO WHY DO THEY EVEN EXIST?
Oh, and I've barely discussed the culprit himself, "Zilch-Alexander-but not-really-it's-just-some-unnamed-hitman-who-looks-and-sounds-exactly-like-him."
You mean to tell me that the real Zilch just happened to look EXACTLY LIKE THIS RANDOM HITMAN? A hitman who, much later in the game, is revealed to be old pals with Yomi Hellsmile, the symbolic leader of Amaterasu?
You're telling me this isn't actually a hitman, he's an insider from Amaterasu who managed to not only get out of Kanai Ward, but only left to kill four detectives, use some intricately designed train to pull off their murders, and then frame the trainee who just happened to have amnesia so his alibi is already pretty shaky?
You're telling me he got past all of the security regulations that Kanai Ward had in place preventing people from getting in or out, and instead of taking this opportunity to spread Amaterasu's influence, HE WENT STRAIGHT BACK THERE AND EXPECTED TO BE GREETED WITH OPEN ARMS?!
Are you starting to get why I have issues with this chapter?
It would've been so much simpler to say "Zilch was bribed by Amaterasu to betray the WDO". Melami or Aphex could even mention something along the lines of, "Not all detectives care about the truth. Some only care about lining their own pockets and making themselves look better in the eyes of the WDO." Which would make it easier for us to understand that detectives don't always have everyone's best interests in mind.
And if it's absolutely necessary for the sake of the plot, to fuel Yuma's desire to solve injustices and learn how to use the Mystery Labyrinth to uncover the truth, why can't it just be ONE DEATH INSTEAD OF FOUR?
I discussed this with a friend of mine on Discord, but rewriting this chapter so that only Zange dies would be incredibly easy. Zange realizes their drinks are drugged, and when everyone else falls asleep, he confronts Zilch. Of course it ends badly, and by the time the others realize he's dead, Zilch's status as the traitor becomes even more apparent. One Mystery Labyrinth later, and Swank kills Zilch for blowing cover, saying something like, "You said this would go off without a hitch." It would make Amaterasu seem more like a threat, since they're willing to go to such extreme lengths to compromise the WDO's involvement in Kanai Ward. Aphex, Melami and Pucci would all join the rest of the detective gang along with Yuma, and the story would proceed as normal.
Do you see how easy that was? I'm not trying to say this would've been better than how it actually played out, but I certainly would've enjoyed the game a bit more, at least.
Anyways, I digress. Rants are exhausting, but I definitely feel better getting all of this off my chest. Of course, you're free to agree or disagree, but I'd really prefer not to be called an egomaniac just because I disliked Kodaka's galaxy brain storytelling on this one.
Have a great rest of your day or night, I'm gonna go lay down now. :')
