both diaz boys waking up every day and saying "let's do this" to each other every morning. . .when did it start? when eddie came off his first tour? when shannon left? did he say it to chris for the first time when he realised shannon wasn't coming back so they both could get through the day and tackle it? did eddie start saying it in the army and passed it on? does buck say it now too? or is it something just for those two? does buck listen to them say it to each other when he finds himself at eddie's in the morning and smile over pancakes?

Re-watching 4x05, there were some things said in Maddie鈥檚 and Buck鈥檚 conversation in the beginning and then when kid Buck falls off the bike (by Margaret) that made me go and look for the risks in donating bone marrow.
Remember that Daniel died the first year after Buck was born, meaning that Evan was a baby when they used him as a donor.
So I pulled a Buck and went to research online: (According to healthline.com)
Anyone between 18 and 60 years old can register to be a donor.
People between 18 and 44 tend to produce more and higher quality cells than older individuals. Doctors choose donors in the 18 to 44 age group more than 95 percent of the time, according to Be The Match, a national marrow donor program.
You鈥檒l need to provide a tissue sample. This is obtained by swabbing the inside of your cheek. You must also sign a consent form.
Besides donating your bone marrow, you鈥檙e donating your time. To be accepted, you鈥檒l need to provide additional blood tests and have a physical examination. The total time commitment for the donation process is estimated to be 20 to 30 hours over four to six weeks
The most serious risks have to do with anesthesia:
People who fall into those categories may have an increased risk for:
postoperative confusion
pneumonia
stroke
heart attack
About 2.4 percent of donors have a serious complication from anesthesia or damage to bone, nerve, or muscle, according to Be The Match.
You鈥檒l only lose a small amount of bone marrow, so it won鈥檛 weaken your own immune system. Your body will replace it within six weeks. - But this talks about adults doing the process, not a newborn, barely formed baby.
Some potential side effects from general anesthesia are:
sore throat due to the breathing tube
mild nausea
vomiting
Regional anesthesia can cause headache and a temporary drop in blood pressure.
Some side effects of marrow donation include:
bruising at the incision site
soreness and stiffness where the marrow was harvested
achiness or pain in the hip or back
trouble walking for a few days due to pain or stiffness
You might also feel fatigued for a few weeks. That should resolve as your body replaces the marrow.
While recovering, here are a few ways to ease common side effects:
Lightheadedness. Rise from a lying down or seated position slowly. Take things easy for a while.
Sleep disturbances. Eat smaller, lighter meals. Rest and go to bed earlier until you feel fully recovered.
Swelling at the surgery site. Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity for 7 to 10 days.
Swelling of the lower back. Use an ice pack periodically throughout the day.
Stiffness. Stretch or take a few short walks each day until you build up your strength and flexibility.
Fatigue. Rest assured that it鈥檚 temporary. Get plenty of rest until you feel like yourself again.
According to Be The Match, some donors find it more painful than they thought it would be. But others find it less painful than they expected.
Reading this got me even more mad at the Buckley parents, because baby Evan was expandable, they had him for the sole purpose of saving Daniel. It made me wonder if the graft worked but the baby died in the process if the grieving would have been as long as it is with Daniel.
I wonder if both survived, the treatment of baby to adult Evan would have been different - if he would have been considered the hero/savior by his parents.
I don鈥檛 wonder at Buck鈥檚 unbelievable tolerance for pain, and his habit to persevere despite everything.聽
I don鈥檛 wonder about Buck鈥檚 belief of how expandable he is (obviously he鈥檚 not), it鈥檚 because that鈥檚 how his parents made him feel, every day of his life for as long as he lived under their roof, and even outside of it.聽
Until the 118, bobby, and the Diazes, he really didn鈥檛 have a home.
And Chimney鈥檚聽鈥淵es you were, by her.鈥 (referring to Maddie wanting and loving him) does not makes a difference, because, yes she loves him and of course she wants him, always, but a sister鈥檚 love (even absent, for whatever reason) amazing as it is ( I have two, both younger) does not rival to the patterns of behavior and sense of self worth our parents can instill in us.聽
I know my parents love me, but they screwed me over pretty good. (My therapist is making good money off of me lol) I know my sisters love me and that they are always there when I need them, and vice versa, but that doesn鈥檛 make the damage our parents did, even inadvertently, any less聽harmful.
So Eddie鈥檚 very correct assumption (unlike the rest鈥檚 broken record - reckless) in Buck acting expandable is such an important observation that was finally made to Buck himself - and the fact that it was made by Eddie is even more important, because Eddie is the one that spend the most time with Buck, by choice, and actually sees him for who and what he really is.聽
Eddie doesn鈥檛 shy away from that conversation - and compared to Eddie of S3 and even S2 that is a hell of a character development, and a blessing in disguise because now they can both move on together. - Get better together.
I didn鈥檛 plan on making this about buddie - but the family Buck chose, choosing him back, in contrast to the family who brought him into this world out of necessity not out of choice is so highlighted in this case, it had to be adressed.

For the sleepover ask: what's your headcanon about Eddie's relationships with Abuela and Pepa? Because as much as he has struggled, Eddie did manage to carve out some semblance of an identity for himself separate from his parents 鈥 something just enough that allowed him to get out and build a life for himself. I'm thinking he had to have had some kind of genuine love and encouragement as a child, right? (Also it delights me to no end how much Pepa hates Ramon.)
So, Eddie, Abuela and Pepa headcanons?
Great question as always.
Listen, I've said it before and I'll say it again: Abuela and Pepa are 100% the reason Eddie is the man he is today, so here are some of my favorite headcanons:
Youth:
1.
Considering how terrible Eddie鈥檚 parents are, Abuela and Pepa were relatively limited in what they could do for him. Ramon was very much of the mindset that his son was his responsibility, and while that鈥檚鈥 true to some degree鈥 he (and his wife) constantly went overboard with raising him and with Eddie鈥檚 discipline in general.
As a kid, getting into trouble was never just "getting into trouble" for Eddie. When Eddie got in trouble with his parents, it was borderline traumatic; lots of shouting, lots of belittling. And because of the way Ramon was very much so an overwhelming presence in the house, I think if Abuela/Pepa tried to interject while he was verbally abusing his son, it'd probably just make it worse for Eddie (Ramon would probably say something like, "what kind of man needs a bunch of women to protect him" etc etc). Nevermind the fact that he鈥檚 a CHILD, not a man, but okay. Asshole. So whenever he鈥檇 get sent to his room, one of them would come find him later and try to soften the blows wherever they could; sitting with him and trying to get him to laugh through his sadness. Watching him try to choke on his stifled tears and just reassuring him that it鈥檚 okay to cry. Of course, they never really got that message through to him but they did try.
2.
Around the age of thirteen is when things in the Diaz household really started to change. Eddie was a teenage boy growing up in a relatively hostile and intense environment; of course he started to rebel: talking back, rolling his eyes, sneaking out, etc. This 鈥渄isrespect鈥 only intensified the growing animosity between himself and his parents, so one day, Abuela (who knows her grandson is practically dying in this house) says, "Why don't I take him off your hands for the summer?" And because Helena and Ramon are too self-absorbed to even consider the fact that she's doing this for Eddie's benefit rather than theirs, they agree. By week's end, he's sitting on a plane, and by the end of the day, he鈥檚 walking up her porch steps.
Abuela can practically see the physical change that comes over him when Eddie steps through the door. His shoulders slump, he takes a deep breath鈥攊nhaling all the fragrance from the kitchen and the incense lit in the doorway鈥攁nd suddenly he goes from being a closed off, cautious boy to the warm, gentle grandson she knows and loves.
After that first summer, Eddie spending summers in Los Angeles with her becomes a Thing. If you asked him, those summers were the highlight of his youth. They鈥檇 spend their days at the farmer鈥檚 market, baking homemade pies, reading in the evening light, etc. They were good days. And all that time spent together obviously amounted to an abundance of trust.
3.
Eddie comes out to Pepa when he鈥檚 15. Even to this day, she and Abuela are the only people he's ever verbally come out to.
On the day he comes out to her, he鈥檚 sitting on his bed at Abuela's house. He's been moody all day; something is clearly bothering him, but he won't say what it is. Finally, around lunch time, after accidentally breaking one of Abuela鈥檚 vases, he barricades himself in his room and locks the door behind him.
He's in there for hours until Pepa knocks on the door some time in the evening to check on him.
She sits on the bed. "I hear you had a rough day." "I don't want to talk about it." Eddie doesn鈥檛 look up from his GameBoy but he鈥檚 not playing it, not really. "That's okay," she says. "We can sit here and not talk about it. I'll tell you about my day, though." She tells him about her day; about the plants she bought at the store and how she meant to buy perennials, but she thinks she bought some damn annuals. She tells him about the craft store she went to, and the bratty cashier who gave her attitude, and she鈥檚 content to talk for the rest of the night if it鈥檒l keep her nephew from looking like he鈥檚 about to break. But then he looks at her, and she stops talking. 鈥淧epa?鈥 "Yes?" "There鈥檚 something I鈥擨 don鈥檛鈥攊t鈥檚 just that鈥擨 think鈥" "Take your time." He nods. 鈥淩ight.鈥 He takes a deep breath, then another. He sets down his game on the nightstand, looks her in the eye, and says, "I have a boyfriend." Oh, she thinks, so it鈥檚 this conversation. "Do you?" "Yeah." "Hmm." Pepa folds her hands in her lap. "What is his name?" "Eli.鈥 Eddie鈥檚 hands fidget with the hem of his shirt. 鈥淗e鈥檚 a year older than me. It鈥檚鈥攚e've only been going out for a couple weeks. It's not serious or anything." He looks terrified, and Pepa doesn't know whether he's waiting for her to shout or鈥擥od help her brother if he's so much as laid a hand on this child鈥攈it him. But he鈥檚 looking to her like she has all the answers, like she鈥檚 the one with the power to either make or break him, and well. It鈥檚 been a while since she鈥檚 done this; no one鈥檚 come out to her since college, but she cups his chin and turns his face toward her. "I love you so much. Thank you for trusting me enough to tell me." His chin quivers. "You're not mad?" "Mad? At you? How could I possibly be mad at my favorite nephew? And for what?" She smooths his brow with her thumb and makes sure she has his eyes when she says quietly, firmly, "You haven't done anything wrong." That鈥檚 the thing that gets him. He turns away from her as much as her hand on his chin will allow, but not even he can stop the single tear that rolls down his cheek. "Do you think Abuela will be mad?" "Of course not.鈥 Pepa stands up. She holds her hand out to him. 鈥淏ut why don't we go ask her? Only if you're ready." She doesn鈥檛 want to assume he鈥檚 ready, doesn鈥檛 want him to feel pressured to give any more than he wants to. But Eddie takes another deep breath and nods. He's a brave boy and she loves him. He places his hand in hers. "I'm ready."
So he comes out to Abuela/Pepa on the same day and the world doesn't end. They give him lots of hugs and kisses, tease him about his boyfriend, and his world doesn't collapse.
It's a good day.
Adulthood
1.
When Eddie goes into service, Abuela and Pepa send him care packages. With his parents, by this point the relationship is so strained, it鈥檚 kind of an 鈥渙ut of sight, out of mind鈥 thing for both him and them, but Pepa and Abuela always send him stuff, just so he can know they鈥檙e thinking of him. They pack cookies, and letters, and blankets and shit and when Eddie comes home, he brings Pepa a scarf and Abuela a vase and she loves it even more than the one he broke when he was a kid because it's a sign that her boy returned home.
2.
They have Sunday dinners together and when he and Buck get together, one evening afterward, while Christopher is playing the Xbox, the three of them are sitting outside sipping glasses of wine, and Eddie says,
鈥淪o. Buck and I got together.鈥 There鈥檚 no fear there like it was the first time; he鈥檚 not scared of how they鈥檒l react, not scared he鈥檒l be thrown out on his ass. He knows they love him, and he鈥檚 assured of their love, but he is a little nervous. Only because neither of them really liked Shannon that much. There鈥檚 a weighted silence as Pepa and Abuela process that information. And then Abuela goes, 鈥淚t鈥檚 about time.鈥 鈥淵ou鈥檙e not surprised?鈥 He huffs a laugh. 鈥淥f course you aren鈥檛.鈥 鈥淓ddito, I think the only people who were surprised were you and that boy of yours.鈥 Pepa drinks from her wine glass. 鈥淢e? I saw it from the moment I met him.鈥 鈥淭hat was only a couple weeks after we met.鈥 鈥淲hat is your point?鈥
After that, Eddie brings Buck around for Sunday dinner. He's been around before, of course, but always as Buck the Best Friend and never Buck the Boyfriend, but he fits into their unit like he was always meant to be there (because he was). Abuela and Pepa tease them both relentlessly, but they make Buck feel like a part of the family (because he is). And.............. I dunno man, I guess that's it.
Eddie's got his family, he's loved, he's cared for, and he owes it all to the women who raised him.

Buck headcanon time!
Upon second (really first cause no one is at their best at a funeral) meeting, Helena and Ramon Diaz adore Buck.
Eddie's sisters decide Buck is their brother, and his nieces and nephews decide the other man is the coolest person ever.
They leave El Paso with full stomachs and leftovers in a cooler, Hen with a new facebook friend in Adriana, Eddie with a few presents for Christopher, and Buck...
Buck leaves with every adult Diaz's phone number already set in his phone, Helenas grandmothers pie recipe, Ramons assurance that he'll send pictures of the finished toolshed Buck helped him plan out in the 15 minutes they were in the backyard, a dozen stickers on his person from Eddie's youngest niece, a drawing of Buck as a knight from his eldest nephew and a Facetime coffee date with both Eddie's sisters and his mother for sometime next week.
