A Milwaukee Duck Feathursday

There are field guides and then there are field guides, and the famed Wisconsin conservationist and UW-Madison professor of Wildlife Management Aldo Leopold believes that this field guide is a step above: The Ducks, Geese and Swans of North America by Canadian engineer, businessman, and conservationist Francis H. Kortright (1887–1972), illustrated by the Canadian ornithologist and artist Terence Michael Shortt (1911-1986), and published in Washington, D.C. by the American Wildlife Institute in 1943.

In the introduction to the book, Leopold laments that "the existing literature on the identification of waterfowl describes manly their spring plumages. This is of little avail to the sportsman who is afield mainly in the fall, and it hardly suffices for the ornithologist, who is afield at all seasons." But in this guide, Leopold writes, "Mr. Kortright has sensed the need for a year-round waterfowl book and has done a scholarly job of writing one. . . . I do find much useful and interesting subject matter which most ornithologists omit. . . ." That Kortright has no formal training as a zoologist does not phase Leopold: "While he disclaims being an ornithologist, I detect no lack of ornithological competence in what he has written."

Of the illustrations, he writes, "Mr. Shortt's paintings, portraying all of the more important plumages of a given species, in themselves justify the publication of this volume." That both author and illustrator are Canadians also seems a plus: "To my mind it is appropriate that this book should issue from the pen of a Canadian. Canada is the birthplace of most waterfowl; this book attests her growing activity in waterfowl research and conservation."

We represent this field guide with images of some ducks most commonly found in our Milwaukee area: the Mallard, Wood Duck, and Blue-winged Teal are present in summer, with the Mallard and Wood Duck as year-round residents, while the Mergansers, Bufflehead, and Goldeneye are most prevalent in winter. We end with a couple of plates of random goslings and ducklings. Why? Well, because they're just so darn adorable!

I just noticed something. In D3, when the Ducks unleash the fire ants on the Varsity Adam isn't present. So either one of two things happened. Either they refused to bug Adam's room. Which honestly sounds adorable and sweet of them. Or Adam felt so bad about the dinner prank that he went home for the night to think things over. We can also confirm Adam wasn't effected due to the fact that he isn't sporting any bites like the other Varsity members. So, even if he was there the Ducks still cared enough about him to not hurt him. I have watched these movies numerous times over the last few days and have noticed a couple of other things that I may note later.

Late-night-drive

Pairing: Adam Banks x fem!reader

Summary: Adam Banks and y/n go on a late night drive, vibing to their playlist they had made together and drinking.

Warnings: drinking alcohol while driving. Driving fast. But mostly fluff.

Word count: ??? But it’s pretty short.

A/n: In this imagine Adam Banks is aged up to 19, here where I’m from the legal age to drink alcohol is 18+. Just imagine it’s 2022 and Adam is 19.

As I locked the door to my house I heard Adam, my boyfriend, yell “ I got the drinks in the back seat, are you ready?!” From the car. Me and Adam were going to go on this late-night-drive where we of course had bought our drinks along.

Even though we know it’s illegal to drive while drinking, but I live in this private-area on a hill which means that the other houses are pretty far away from where we are going to drive, and people always mind their own business. So we really didn’t care if someone saw us.

“Yeah I’m ready, let’s get going already” I say exited as I opened the door to sit in the passenger seat. The time was currently 11.45 PM as Adam stepped into the drivers seat starting the car. “I’m so glad that for one time, after a long time, we get to go out. Just the two of us, no hockey no nothing just us” I say as I grab Adam’s shoulder and lightly massage it while looking at him. “Me to, I have missed the way me used to go out on these late night drives” he says as his eyes are still on the road. After sometime he pulls over and step out of the car to get the drinks from the back seat. First off he takes two beer cans and hands them to me so he can get in the car and start driving again. As he starts to drive I open the cans and hand him one.

As I hand him his beer I open mine. I took my phone out so I could connect it to the cars Bluetooth. When that was done I went into Spotify and clicked on our shared playlist, the first song that played right when I clicked on the playlist was ‘Run it! By Chris brown(feat. Juelz Santana)’. That really sat the vibe as we started to drink our beer and sing out loud, but of course as Adam’s eyes still concentrating on the road.

After sometime we had already finished our second can of beer. Adam had once again pulled over, this time I went out and opened the back seats door and took out a bottle of Vodka and two Red Bull cans, I then took two glass cups that Adam already had put in the car before we left. I then started to combine the vodka and the Red Bulls together, when I was done mixing I gave one of the cups to Adam. Right as he started to drive again ‘Heartbeat by Childish Gambino’ started to play, another one of our favorite songs. Adam being more drunk then before, starts to drive faster.

This time me and Adam got a lot more drunk then we were just a few minutes ago, Adam started to sing(rap) his soul out, as if he just didn’t do that while the other songs were playing, and I just stared at him laughing and then sang myself. Right as the beat dropped I looked over at Adam, this time he looked more appealing than ever before. He stopped because of the red light but I really couldn’t think of anything else other then him right now. I was still looking at him, the red lights flashing on his face, he turned his head to look at me, as we made eye contact, he suddenly says “ I’m so glad that you are mine and only mine” as he smiles, I on the other hand of course not being able to contain the blush that’s slowly but fast rising on my face, just smile and giggle a little.

“No really, you’re the best girlfriend I have ever had” he says again. This time it felt like he really just stared into my eyes. As we slowly lean in for a kiss we hear some car beeping from behind, we then pulled away fast and laughed a little as Adam started to drive again. “I’m also very happy that I get to have a handsome- REALLY handsome boyfriend like you” I say as I smile widely, he looked at me and smiled and took my hand to hold one of his as his other hand is holding the steering wheel.

Song Review(s): Neil Young - “Human Highway” (Live, Nov. 5, 1973, w/ the Santa Monica Flyers) and “Little Wing” (Live, 1977, w/ the Ducks)

Two new Neil Young singles - one with the Santa Monica Flyers; the other with the Ducks - focus on Young’s acoustic and electric sides and the lo- and hi-fidelity ends of Young’s Original Bootleg Series.

The Flyers’ Somewhere Under the Rainbow and the Ducks’ High Flyin’ arrive April 14.

While the Nov. 5, 1973, recording of “Human Highway” - and presumably the entire LP from which its culled - is seriously hampered by what sounds to be an amateur audience recording, “Little Wing,” from ’77, belies the Series’ Bootleg banner.

If only one of these LPs can sound good, at least it’s the Ducks’, a short-lived band that played stealth gigs in small venues and never made a proper record.

“Little Wing” suggests that might have been a tactical error. And the cut seeks to rectify that situation.

With Young’s lead and Jeff Blackburn’s rhythm occupying opposite channels and the band fully cognizant of Jimi Hendrix’s legacy, it’s a track that works in both performance and production.

Solo-acoustic, muffled and barely listenable “Human Highway” is so poorly recorded, it’s impossible to discern much about the quality of the performance itself. More concerning is what this means for the full-band selections, which seem guaranteed to be slathered in thick mud.
