Do you have any favorite conspiracy theories surrounding the bats?

G: Since I’m not as passionate about the Bats in the same way W is, I mostly stick to their history in and impact on Gotham more than the theories and more fandom-y side of the community. However, I do strongly believe at least a few of them aren’t fully human. My front runners for that theory are Black Bat II, Batman, Red Hood, and Orphan. There’s just something funky going on w/ those guys. Anyways I’ll turn it over to W now for whatever she has in mind.

Here’s a whole post we’ve made about Batman theories, and now it’s time to get into some others.

1. There have been/are multiple Batmen

Think about it. Being Batman is a tiring and complicated job, he gets beat up a ton, much more than most people could probably take. Not to mention descriptions of his personality, voice, abilities, etc. vary wildly from person to person. Makes you think. Is it multiple people alternating wearing the suit over months or years? Is it really just one crazy powerful or supernatural guy? No one fuckin knows bro!

2. The Red Hood is some kind of ghost or zombie

There are soooo many reports of strange encounters with Red Hood. People describe everything from feeling like they’re being watched to getting a strange cold sensation when they catch sight of him. I’ve had that experience once, when I saw him while walking home. By all accounts he carries this weird air of oddness with him, something unsettling and supernatural. He still acts pretty human in fights and when he talks to civilians according to most reports, but no one can remember what his voice sounds like. At all. We love a spooky bitch guys, but damn that bro creepy.

3. They’re all vampires

I mean. A classic. From the Bat theme to reports of members reportedly being supernatural or withstanding lethal wounds to Bat sightings in the day being extremely rare, there’s really a lot you can speculate on. Also there are a few pictures floating around the internet from like... idk some time a few years ago that actually look like a vampire Batman, but it might just be photoshop.

4. New developments and theories in the hero relationship world

Over the past couple of weeks there have been reports of some new or changed hero relationships. I guess the capes are jumping on the Wayne trend of breakups! The only stuff I’ve really been able to find so far is that Spoiler/RR couple sightings have declined recently, and that a few weeks ago when there was that company explosion over in San Fran there were also some shaky videos that have lead people to believe RR might be with Superboy, Impulse, or both now. We aren’t really sure! But I hope all parties involved are happy with where they are. There have also been more scattered sightings indicating a possible new relationship for Mr. Batman himself, but the parties involved can’t be identified in the video. 

5. Secret Batfamily leader/puppet master?

This is a favorite of mine. It stems off the fact that when the Bats are caught talking a lot in battle, it never seems to be to each other. People have picked out a few names that don’t match up with the vigilante’s aliases, including A, O (thought to be Orphan by some though people talked about this mystery person before that name change, making that unlikely), and finally Oracle (who many people have tied to the aforementioned ‘O’). Is there someone behind the scenes organizing the Bats? A leader who isn’t Batman? The theories on who this is range from the second Robin and first Batgirl all the way to Bruce Wayne. I love this theory, and though I don’t have a stake in this mystery person’s identity I do think they exist. I don’t see too many people talking about this one though which is insane! There might be another Bat right under our noses guys!!

6. Spoiler=resurrected from dead or relative of previous Spoiler

I’ve talked abt this one before but I was too lazy to find the post. Basically, there’s a swirl of theories around the blonde haired vigilante(s) that have been seen in Gotham. Some theorists think they’re all the same person, from the first Spoiler to that female Robin to the blonde Batgirl to the current Spoiler, but some people think there’s more to it. It’s pretty well known that something bad happened to the female Robin. There was all that gang shit and violence and then there are civilian reports of seeing Batman at a free clinic in the Narrows, etc. etc. Personally, I agree with the people that think she died, which is pretty widely accepted as fact. From there though things get muddy. Some people think that girl was resurrected somehow (it happens man who knows) and went on to be Batgirl and Spoiler, others think she didn’t die but you end up the same way. People who think she wasn’t resurrected point to the similarities in hair and build of the following heroes as a possible genetic connection, citing sisters, twins, even parents or children depending on the age people slot the original Spoiler at. Personally I kind of like the sister theory, but imagining the original Spoiler is still kicking is a happier concept. I’m not really sure on this one but it’s a deep rabbit hole for sure.

7. The Signal is a meta

This ones almost not a theory, just based on the amount of overheard conversations and firsthand accounts. People aren’t quite sure what his powers are, but I’ve found stuff on shadow manipulation, possible precog stuff (though might just be Bat training), and other mixed abilities. This is one of my favorites just because I already thought Signal was cool, but when the news of him being a possible meta started spreading I know a lot of meta kids in Gotham found a new role model! You don’t have to be a supervillain if you have powers in Gotham, you can be a hero too!

Anyways I have more but those are a couple off the top of my head and this is long enough. Let me know your guys’ thoughts on any of these, or if you have any theories yourself. I’d love to talk to some other Batfans!

G: Aha, anon throwing shade at the Batwayne shippers over here 😳 But yeah I kinda agree w u on the space thing? I guess I just always assumed he had a secret identity like most heroes, but we don’t really know. (Idrc abt shipping btw but u do u man, it def is more W’s thing)

W: Anon u have a point abt the shipping in some ways, beefy alien man and beefy billionaire man could go far, but please also consider... SuperWayneBat 👀 It would make sense since all three of them seem pretty buddy buddy, and it ties up all preferences. Also u do bring up a good concept on the other bit? I feel like there are some recorded interactions somewhere where people have heard Superman allude to a private life, Bc I swear I remember a bunch of talk about how he “grew up among us” or whatever, but again.... space is also a plausible idea.

So I know that Bruce Wayne theories are a meme at this point, but what are your thoughts on SuperBruce? I personally think it’s way more believable than Bratman, I mean, we can see Superman’s face and honestly they look so similar it’s uncanny; same nose, eyes, hair, jawline, build, the only difference is Superman uses pomade. If they’re not the same dude I swear he’s a long lost twin. How many dark haired, blue eyed Adonises could there possibly be wandering around the state of New Jersey?

G: Ah don’t confuse me more, man, I already have trouble telling celebs and stuff apart, this makes it worse 😞 Though I guess that would be smart? Like if you’re gonna be a superhero I guess being in your city makes sense, but living in another city would make keeping the whole secret identity thing easier. Esp when u can fly to different places as fast as Superman can.

W: Uggg this is such a good theory and I love it but there have been too many Wayne/Superman sightings for it to hold strong for me :-( They do look very similar, I agree, though there are definitely a few differences in their features, most markedly slightly different hair textures, skin tones, eye shapes, and the fact that Superman doesn’t have any birthmarks. We don’t know the full extent of his powers though, so maybe he can shapeshift or something, though that would still be discounted with their direct interactions. I guess NJ and DE just have big beefy pretty man solidarity.

I’m now 90% sure Black Bat II is a teenage robot, in seriousness his suit sounds sick though.

G: Oooo, that sounds cool. I don’t think we’ve had a robot Bat yet, but also I have no idea. Whether he’s a robot or not I’d love to get a good look at his suit bc the tech sounds fascinating.

W: Beep boop boy. If he is a robot that begs the question of where he came from. Was the wormhole from another universe? Another time? Another planet? A mix of all of those or something else entirely?? Like where is he from man! The more I learn the more I want to know.

Thoughts on various hero teams?

(Just gonna do a few main ones bc otherwise G won’t be able to answer ✊😔)

Justice League

W: The main crew! Bunch of awesome and very pretty people kicking ass and taking names. They save the world about every year, and they’ve defined and given birth to several generations of heroes.

G: The JL are the ones I know best! I know there’s the whole running gag that I don’t know shit abt heroes (which is generally pretty true but I’m learning!), but I’ve actually done some research on the JL. They’re rlly cool and I still love my main homies Shining Knight and Vigilante, won’t let you guys go unnoticed 👌

Titans

W: The OG TTs but like... even cooler now. And they have some of the other members that have filtered in through the years too! Gonna be honest I’m not quiiite sure who’s on their official roster rn, but everyone I’ve seen has been 👌 and they really set the stage for younger heroes to make a place in the world which is awesome.

G: I didn’t actually know... there was a difference? Between the Titans and Teen Titans. But I guess there is. Uhhh quick google search and it seems like they’re cool! Didn’t know my boy Nightwing was on a non-Bat team actually. It’s nice to see a bunch of big name hero partners doing their own thing, and a bunch of standalone heroes as well.

Teen Titans

W: These guys change a lot but I think it’s fun! It’s like a bunch of young heroes just vibin and saving people and stuff. Again, no one is quite sure of the official roster but it seems very extensive, almost like a mini Justice League, which is cool, thoyfg ironic since they aren’t Young Justice.

G: Again, google search, and yeah they seem neat! Don’t know most of the ppl there but everyone seems fun. I like the devil-lookin guy, and I didn’t know there were two Blue Beetles! That’s neat man.

Young Justice

W: These guys are a claaaasssic, kind of the young hero group I grew up with. They’ve grown a bit more in recent years and seem closer to the TTs now, but the core team members hold a special place in my heart! It’s been cool seeing them mature and stuff, even if they’re all older than me. They seem like genuine friends which is really cool!

G: Another Bat I didn’t know was on a team. Neat! Uhhh, don’t have much to say except that Superboy has rlly nice outfit choice and I hope they’re all doing well. Supers, Bats, Flashes, and Wonders all on one team w even more sounds p epic, and they’re a little closer to my age which is cool.

ArchitectMeta: I went back to Gotham and walked around matching as many gargoyles as possible to their names on the official name site. There are SOOO many, my inner goth is squeeing. Also, I am very tempted to find a way up to a rooftop or something to take better pictures of the roofs and windows (and gargly boys). Pls discourage me from potentially committing illegal trespassing (or pls suggest ways from me to sneak up there, ur choice).

G: First, I’m glad you had fun! The gargoyle hunt is one of the best ways to get to know/see Gotham and it’s architecture, so I’m glad you had a good time with it. Secondly... it’s rlly not that hard to get into the roofs here if u just looks round a bit 👀

W: Yea yea, there’s definitely NOT an organized list of easy and safe access spots on the Batwatch site, and you can definitely NOT use that list to get on top of almost any building in Gotham. This is also NOT from firsthand experience, so I will also NOT tell you that if you’re staying at a hotel or friend’s house in an apartment style thing, going out most windows will work as well :-)

Hi, I’m new to the Gotham area and very distraught at the name “Condiment King”, can someone tell me what his deal is? Someone did give me an explanation but I swear they must be joking, is there a villainous alternate meaning to the word condiment or is he actually a sauce themed villain? Gothamites are so frank about everything I’m never sure if they’re joking.

G: Unfortunately... he’s exactly what the name says on the tin. He’s just a guy, from what I’ve seen, or like a couple guys, that honestly think they can make robberies with fancy squirt guns filled with ketchup and relish and stuff. I wouldn’t consider him a big deal if he hadn’t dropped a condiment bomb on GHS Freshman year and made everyone smell like mustard for a month. He’s just... dumb, and annoying, and the current guy’s last name is literally Mayo. I get Gotham has a weird way of attracting coincidences but come on.

W: Condiment King started out as a Joker scheme against some comedians back in 2010, just mind control and stuff, but then another “brilliant” guy took up the role a few years later. He breaks out constantly, he’s always back in jail just as fast, and he’s just one of the things you have to deal with here. I don’t hate him as much as G does but the Mustard incident did make me a little :-//// abt him. Like you.. you really didn’t need to do that bro.

Do you think Batsy is actually scary and intimidating? He dresses as a bat after all

G: Yes and no. I say yes on principle and because he’s very intimidating in real life, but also I’ve heard stories of people seeing him be super sweet to others. It’s kind of common knowledge here that B-man is really good with kids, and he’ll also sit with people after he saves them if they ask or he thinks they need that. There’s first person accounts all over the web it’s very touching.

W: He’s definitely scary, especially up close, but I also agree with G. Batman is what I like to call tender scary. He’s a big, creepy, dude who punches people and saves cities and does crazy stuff daily, but he also has a pack of younger vigilantes surrounding him and there’s documented evidence of him tripping on his own cape. He’s creepy, but he’s only human (probably).
