I think what a lot of people don't understand is that the cultural and societal aspects of religion can still exist in a society that is 100% secular. Most atheists aren't anti-theists, in fact, most of them still take part in many religious customs and celebrations in a secular form. Anti-theism doesn't even mean the eradication of religion, it's typically used to describe the intellectual opposition to belief in a deity,

So, I'm honestly perplexed whenever I see people arguing that the "end goal" of atheism is to eradicate religion, this is something both religious people and ill-informed atheists believe, for some reason. I guess this is what happens when Christopher Hitchens and Sam Harris are your go-to atheists and you're measuring atheism against the most extreme religious zealots because that's what most people are reactive towards.

What should be completely removed are almost all forms of institutionalized religion and religious power structures. These are the exactual oppressive structures that have used religion as a tool to justify every form of bigotry and crime against humanity. They are also not essential to the practice of the religion or the survival of the religious culture. Your right to practice your religion ends if you're using said religion to advocate for the oppression of Muslims (assuming you're not practicing Islam), atheists, LGBT+ people, and other minorities. You can be a church-going Catholic without advocating for state-sanctioned religion or the rights of others being removed. This evangelical breed of religious extremism has no place in society and is what actually leads to real genocides happening today.

The idea of 'The Sovereign' and this storyline in Wonder Woman by Tom King reminds me of Hydra Captain America and the Secret Empire by Nick Spencer.

#wonder woman #i didn't want to discuss this but the sovereign really makes me angry in just how lazy he is as a character #and this whole idea of a 'secret king' running America #reeks the same as 'what if Captain America was a Hydra agent all along' #not only does the conspiracy that's been created upend a lot of what's already been established in WW lore #but this is also just a lazy kind of character creation that just takes everything Diana is and makes it opposite #the Sovereign or is he a Bizarro Wonder Woman? #like Superman and Lex aren't wholly opposites their goals are the same it's their motivation that's different #Lex 'helps' because he wants to look good and get praise and money he does good for selfish reasons #meanwhile Superman does good because it's the right thing to do #the sovereign looks and feels shallow #it's trying hard to be edgy but it's cringe i mean 'lasso of lies'? #it feels like it's gonna be revealed that there wasn't ever going to be a history where the sovereign and his ilk ruled America #but someone gave this man the lasso of lies and he created his new reality off the old one LIKE when Cap was rewritten to be Hydra #and we know he gets locked up so what is the actual stakes in this story we know he gets defeated #so what makes this story important? #like wonder woman earth one did this whole arc better and the main villain being max lord aka ares made more sense #the first 6 or so issues should have been on working towards unraveling amazonian influence and power in America because a group of men #see them as a threat to American superiority if this is the direction you want to go in #snapping your fingers and fastfowarding for a first issue is not the in media res you think it is #im ranting but ww has been one of mh fav series the past few years and now #for the first time in a long time #i have to not read it because this whole storyline sucks #dc comics #i can't wait for whoever comes next to undo what's happening now because if there's one consistent thing about WW is she will be reinvented

#their name is tisiphone they’re a tiefling paladin. oath of vengeance because it’s edgy #and I made up a lot of tiefling lore #wherein sometimes part of the price for making a pact with an archdevil is that they can essentially claim one of your descendants #to do some shit for them #so basically this human kid one day randomly got claimed by zariel (bc of course it’s zariel) and kinda got rejected by society #and then went to a gladiator ring where they found somewhere to live #and they formed a group with 2 others whose stage names are megaera and alecto #tisiphone is their stage name. it’s a furies thing #anyways at some point smth happened to the other 2 they probably got grabbed by their respective archdevils #and now this character is looking for traces of them and is out to avenge them or whatever it’s not all solid in my head #anyways. you don’t care. but anyways I think it’s like. their ‘scariness’ was super played up in the ring #as the equivalent of their like wrestling persona (but with more death) #so they had to get all these scary tattoos and they have devil horns and scary eyes #but they’re actually like. nice to comedic effect. and rly shy #idk I just think it’d be funny. #anyways is any of this relevant to bg3??? no. and I don’t care
