I like talking about bendy characters so it’s time to touch up topic of… Joey Drew himself

Doing it before fade to black release on purpose :)

Here’s my analysis of his behaviour and on the illusion of living philosophy

It’s a huge read and I’ve enjoyed writing it!

(Continuation under the cut)

1. Joey’s family situation was hard on it’s own

Joey doesn’t talk about his parents way too much and mostly focuses on story elements (his father being a shoe maker and how his parents affected his childhood) rather than on his parents as their own people.

They weren’t rich and Joey talks about their family earning a “honest living” but at the same time, he describes how hard it was for his father.

“We weren’t rich. There was an honest living to be earned and Father did that with Mother keeping the books” (TIOL, page 18)

“I definitely saw her (mother) more than I saw Father, who sometimes would only appear briefly at the dinner table, hunched, brow furrowed, silently eating his meal. He’d disappear downstairs right after, and I’d help Mother with the washing up. (TIOL,page 18)

He comments on his father creating fake scenarios (elves helping him to work) to distract from hardship of needing to work a lot to be able to feed their family.

Joey has hard time of understanding ‘why’ he does that and how fantasy can help to work but he wants to believe. He tries to prove to himself that magic can be real.

"I didn’t believe it. I couldn’t believe it” (TIOL, page 19)

“I couldn’t see the elves. They must have been sitting on the table itself, hidden behind Father. I pushed the door open just a little bit and stood taller on my tiptoes.” (TIOL, page 21)

Joey switches between wanting to believe in illusions and not wanting to. He’s scared of not being perceived as normal by others.

He says that it’s not okay to be deep into the fantasy but notes on the fact that he can grasp the concept.

“I knew about make-believe. Played it all the time with my friends. But I didn’t know that adults knew about make-believe too. I nodded. (TIOL, page 23)

After he asks his father directly, he explains his reasoning and says that make-believe helps to feel less lonely (I’ll note on this part, it’ll come in handy later) which changes Joey’s perspective greatly:

"But the make-believe, the little characters, the songs, that changed his reality. What was reality except what we perceive it to be? Elves and magic? Well, why not? (TIOL, page 24)

It’s everything we’ve got to know about his family.

Hard working to earn money for living, using escapism to cope and distant from each other because of their struggles.

This distance likely has continued to grow with years, since for some reason he escaped his home when he was 15 y.o (+ signed up to army); no one seems to actually care and he was left on his own.

1.1 Stage name

Talking about Joey’s distance from his family, he doesn’t use his real family surname or full form of his name.

It’s not something that was explored a lot in Bendy (among all of its content) but we know that he doesn’t like to be referred this way.

'Joey’ was a nickname that he picked up for himself when he was 19 y.o.

"I’m Detective Adam Sinclair. You’re Joseph Drew.” “Joey,” I said. It was a new nickname I was trying out, ever since I moved to the Village. (TIOL, page 88)

Usually he’s referred as 'Joseph’ by his family members or people who are distant to him/don’t know him well.

But "Joey” is not the only one name he gave to himself.

'Drew’ doesn’t look like a real surname. He likely picked it up after getting close with Henry.

Imo Drew is a fun pun name that’s related to Joey owning the studio (and “Joey drew Studios” (literally) in the case of the cycle)

It has never sounded real.

Employees handbook mentions some “Dempsey” person who invests their own costs into the studio:

(Receipts: Investor Deposit, J. Dempsey)

Their initials are “J.D.” which makes it’s obvious who they are.

Joey’s house also doesn’t look rich which would make sense if he put all his earnings into the studio itself.

Bendy devs like to pick names that fit characters & “Dempsey” means “arrogant person” which does fit Joey perfectly.

1.2 Joey is deeply ashamed of the way his family lived.

Everytime someone mentions anything he associates with his past (shoes, for example) he overthinks and creates imaginary conflicts with these people.

His negative thoughts about them take whole paragraphs of text; he tries to make himself believe that he doesn’t care about looking “less” in someone’s eyes. He looks for reasons why they're worse than him constantly.

"Probably trying to figure out my past, and that was none of his business. Then I told myself it didn’t matter because I didn’t care what he thought. I didn’t care much for him in general. He might have been richer than me at the time, but that’s where his superiority ended." ( TIOL, page 26)

He often downplays people because he's deeply insecure and is scared of being outcasted, especially by rich successful guys.

After doing so,he switches toward praising himself and names reasons for why he's better (classic Joey Drew behaviour)

He was a year younger than me, hadn’t fought, hadn’t signed up like I had, hadn’t lied about his age to fight for his country like I had. What could he say to an answer like that?Nothing. Absolutely nothing (TIOL, page 26)

Не believes that they need to feel sorry for this because they have no idea how much he struggled in the past.

2. He's insecure & scared of things he can't control

I could've continues this in previous paragraph but it's a bit different.

You see, while Joey was insecure of his past (things he associated with it acted as "triggers") he still was full of himself.

It was an act but it looked convincing enough; with time it became harder for him to keep it up.

It easily explains his behaviour in batim tapes.

When Joey tries to reassure everyone that he knows what's going on, he actually doesn't. He's as lost as everyone else, he tries to act only when he's forced to do so.

He lies to people and runs away from responsibility because he's scared of abruptness, something out of his control.

Joey shows fear of everything that's unknown to him but he tries to play it off somehow: he tries to be on top and be unpredictable to others.

He treats himself as a human that lives around unpredictable fictional characters that he can't control or read intentions of.

"My father though was a real person. I knew that deep down. But in this moment I saw him not as a son looking at his father but as a viewer looking at a fictional character." (TIOL, page 50)

It's mentioned in the novels that Joey likes theatre and he expresses his thoughts about it to Buddy in dctl.

Theatre operates in "cycles":

Actors play their parts→ the audience applaud→ actors bow→ performance ends→ performance begins and so on.

It's has a pattern and won't introduce anything that will caught you off guard. It's "safe" and as a part of audience,you don't need to perform, you only watch.

Does it remind you of batim's cycle? Outside of holding grudges toward Henry and wanting to run away from everything Joey has performed with GENT, he also searches for control while not being included directly.

HE decides what will happen to the cycle residents. HE writes the story that other people can barely affect. HE blames other people for studio's downfall and makes them suffer for his wrongdoings.

Joey knows that he has failed but he can't process it. He doesn't know what will happen and he's scared of being put into situations he can't predict.

It's really shows how insecure he became with years.

3. Why Henry is important?

Why exactly Joey couldn't replace one man he didn't knew for a really long time? What made Henry so special to him?

We don't get a big insist on their friendship but it can be said that their short-lived bond was strong or at least Joey believed that it was.

Henry seems to be Joey's role model of sort even if Joey doesn't want to acknowledge it.

Joey notes on how Henry changed the course of his life without knowing about this

Henry is a determinated man who went for a career in art because he knew what he wanted & he stayed on this path no matter how hard it was to get any recognition.

Henry's the man who makes decisions and acts when he needs to.

Meanwhile, Joey feels lost his whole life. He searches for answers,purpose or a place with a "soul".

Henry gave him new meaning for life. Creative path with endless possibilities that Joey could build from scratch.

Joey was heartbroken when Henry left, doesn't matter for hard he tries to act like he wasn't.

"His presence was helpful, I can happily admit, but his absence was even more so. Not having him at the studio ended up being one of the best things that could have happened to it" (TIOL, page 138)

For some time his life was revolving around Henry. He knew what to do and what will happen, Henry always pushed him to the right decisions.

He says so directly in batim chapter 5:

"The truth is, you were always so good at pushing, old friend... pushing me to do the right thing"

With loosing Henry, Joey lost his newly gained purpose in life. It wasn't something that he was able to figure out by himself & it made him blind to the road that lies ahead.

He's angry at Henry for being like "other people" that he hates. For leaving him behind when he's scared of being alone.

We don't know about Henry's perspective much but he strikes me as someone who would be supportive of Joey at first.

He made some of Joey's ideas real and left only after a breaking point.

3.1 "Cartoon family"

Joey is deeply attached to main JDS toons that he "mutually" owns with Henry.

Especially, it's noteciable with toon Bendy who was called his child on a couple of occasions:

"Bendy was Joey’s child, and he felt just as strongly about Bendy as I feel about my flesh-and-blood son" © Nathan Arch (TIOL, page 5)

"He was my very first creation—one could even call him my firstborn." (TIOL, page 12)

Joey not only sees Bendy as his child but he also relates to him.

He draws parallels between them both, calls bendy manifestation of "the illusion of living" and shows some of his mannerisms (as he says)

Joey wants to see himself as Bendy.

A character who's loved by kids and adults alike and who always has friends around.

"I tell people that Bendy is the perfect example of my philosophy." (TIOL, page 12)

"To know that I needed a creation so perfect, so accessible to so many people, that it would help me change the way the world saw itself." (TIOL, page 13)

In Joey's apartment the only one picture in frame that he owns is illustration/animation cell of toons drawn by 'Henry Stein':

They're depicted holding hands with Bendy being in the middle of both; it's portrays closeness between them and Bendy's importance in the picture

But was it's actually signed up by Henry or Joey is the one who did it for himself?

We know from batim (and batdr notes) that Joey's signature is "your best pal" which makes this case...a bit complicated

Joey could've wanted to pretend that Henry is still close to him and decided to sign up drawing with his name

Or possibly it was signed up by Henry somewhere in the past. In this case, Joey could've adopted Henry's signature as his own.

Both speculations have place to be real and we can't prove any of them.

Joey's known for pretending (which would fit with the 1st possibility) but he's also stuck in the past and stole a lot of ideas that belong to other people.

Imo it can be interpreted based on the way you see him.

4. Why was Susie fired?

Joey's obsessed with everything that is related to Bendy which can be seen with him being angry about "crooked bendy dolls" or bendy expression sheet in batim ch 2.

We can speculate that Susie Campbell wasn't fired from the role of Alice's voice actress for any valid reason BUT because Joey felt personally offended.

As Norman says in dctl, Alice Angel was really popular for a bit, which possibly could have been unacceptable for Joey.

Bendy is the main character Joey relates to and he wouldn't have wanted to be overshadowed in any way.

Susie being fired and humiliated (for not knowing that she was in fact fired) is the consequence of Joey's insecurity.

Susie claims that "she was absolutely perfect for the role" at first so at some point Joey completely changed his perspective.

Any character getting attention would be good for the studio. Firing a voice actress that helps to get this attention lacks logical reasoning.

After Joey "calms down" he has a conversation with Susie about 'an opportunity' he has for her. This opportunity is Susie being the first (speculated to) human sacrifice. He believed that she'd have been a perfect Alice.

Joey puts Bendy above Boris and Alice (like he does with himself & other people) so him acting pitiful about any other character getting popular does makes sense.

But he still cares about them...to some degree.

"Boris was special, Alice was complicated." (TIOL, page 154)

Joey having complicated feelings with Alice as character is really interesting and it's perfectly reflects what he was thinking about Susie.

She was a perfect voice actress to others but wasn't to him. He thought that she'll be a perfect Alice (after the ink machine was created) but she failed to be.

"She was beautiful. And loved by all. She was perfect...No matter what Joey says." (batim chapter 3, Susie talking about herself in 3rd person)

In dctl he claims that he relates failed experiments to "people not being real enough" or says that they weren't pure.

At the end, Joey basically has decided to pretend that she never was real

Susie is never mentioned in his memoir and she's almost fully erased from studio's history.

In Batdr's studio tour (music department part) "Susie Campbell" was replaced with "Allison Pendle"; meaning that Allison is officially the only one Alice Angel voice actress according to him.

5. The ink demon

It's one of the most interesting parts here and I'm sure that a lot of people have talked about him better that I'll.

The ink demon is a "product" of mistreatment, Joey's unhealthy projecting and capitalism (duh)

Joey saw Bendy as his son

He wanted to be like Bendy, someone who's loved and can always escape from troubles

One of reasons to bring Bendy to life is his marketability. Joey wanted "alive attractions" he can get money from.

The ink demon wasn't able to fullfil any expectations that Joey had.

He was passive and harmless (at first) but to Joey, he's not a cheerful toon that he has always dreamed about.

One of main issues that Joey has with him is that he's off-model:

"Listen Tommy, i know you boys over at Gent are doing your best but I'm paying for living attractions,not walking abominations. Whatever that grinning thing was i saw walking around your office,you better keep it up locked tight! Might scare off investors!..." (batim chapter 5)

"Grinning thing" and "walking abomination." The ink demon is completely dehumanised because he's not marketable.

As it was mentioned earlier, Joey sees Bendy as a perfect being and relates to him

He doesn't want to relate to the ink demon; for this reason, he separates them both.

Joey has hard time with accepting "failures". They either get forgotten, dumped or he tries to change them somehow.

The ink demon is a mistake that Joey and GENT have tried to "fix" for years. "A monster" that has shattered Joey's dreams.

5.1 The ink demon's sense of self

It's Joey character analysis so this point won't be too big.

The ink demon was treated like a mistake for being different:

Closed off, isolated, put in the cycle,tortured.

He was in the place where no one would care because he's not "a perfect bendy". Most of it comes from Joey or is related to him in some way.

Everyone saw him as a monster and he has accepted this role.

We know how it went in batim/batdr.

Worth to mention that unlike Joey, he has never lied in batdr. It's either harsh truth or projecting.

6. Ink Children

Allison was close to Joey and had a good impact on him,as he claims.

Indirectly, she made him want to have a family with the help of the ink machine.

I doubt that this decision has come from the place of jealousy toward Henry (who has a family) unless future content will somehow prove that I'm wrong. Joey can have one good intention while failing everywhere else.

Joey could've wanted to have a family to prove that there's still something good in him.

He was scared of dying alone and being forgotten.

"I hadn’t known that at the time. It gave me chills. The thought of success only after death, now that terrified me. That was not the plan and would never be the plan" (TIOL, page 122)

We don't know how many children have perished until the final, perfect one. And we can't claim what exactly has happened to them.

We don't get much details about the creation process of artificial "almost humans".

The only one we heard (outside of Audrey) is "AD" (name of the file) from batim chapter 5

"Tell me another one,uncle Joey..." ("AD" in batim post credits)

And sadly,you can't say much based on this.

They could've been physically unstable and die on their own terms

(milk packages from Joey's kitchen table in batim chapter 5. All of them were stained with ink)

If they stained object with ink by interacting with them, it could've become worse with time.

Again,with lack of context,it's almost impossible to debate for or against this idea. Was that's a thing for other ink creatures?

Susie does brings up in batim that she was "a shapeless slug" at first.

Joey didn't changed much and dumped imperfect ones

Honestly this part depends on how much you believe that he could grow as a character.

The way Joey talks about "other versions" sounds... indifferent.

Which is weird, because he did spend time with "AD" from batim by entertaining her with stories when she has asked him to

Does he tries to justify them being dumped OR he's distracting from the fact that they didn't had a chance to properly exist?

It feels like it was left for interpretation on purpose.

6.1 Audrey Drew

Second and last artificial child after "AD" that we canonically know about.

For Joey, creating something perfect that will outlive him could've been a key to his definition of immortality. He wanted to leave something after his death that people could know about. A piece of "perfect art"

"...Of course, I intend to live forever, so that will never happen! Ha, a joke indeed, but in a way not a joke, for what is art but a doorway into immortality? The greatest Illusion of Living then, living on after we are no longer alive. What is more of an illusion than that?" (TIOL, page 219)

Joey makes jokes about living eternally even before the ink machine's existence.

After it's creation, it's wasn't something that he has planned but he was ready for this fate (for one reason or another)

At the end of his life, Audrey has became a thing he'll live through eternally. And Memory!Joey is here ig

Memory!Joey basically calls Audrey his magnum opus:

"...My Greatest creation" (batdr, final Memory!Joey custscene)

Which further established that Joey is more proud of Audrey than he ever was on the Bendy franshise (it's hard to be proud of the stolen ideas, peoples deaths or the cycle,eh?)

Audrey seems to share adventurous spirit of young Joey (in his early 20s) & determination

They both got dragged into events they didn't asked for:

Joey (when he was 19 y.o) by detective Sinclair who has blamed him for a murder.

Audrey by Wilson Arch who has wanted to murder her.

6.2 Audrey and the ink demon

Similar trauma, different outcomes and treatment.

How present Joey was in Audrey's life? Why did they got separated at one point even before he has died?

Is there's something Memory!Joey hides from Audrey on purpose?

Batdr archives mention that Audrey has repressed her memories but what and why exactly?

In batdr the ink demon interacts a lot with Audrey which holds huge significance on the story.

In his first interaction with her he says "ink speaks to me and whispers your secrets" so the ink machine (who seems to hold some sense of identity) does know too.

The ink demon heavily relates to Audrey through the game. They were both left alone (in different ways) and they share one creator.

"You are without the purpose. Your very existence.. was a terrible lie...you're a mistake. A monster. Just like me." (batdr, the ink demon, last playable segment)

He heavily projects on her through this last interaction. Audrey does has a purpose,she was created to be a daughter Joey did wanted and loved. As much as Joey Drew could love at least, if you see this part as debatable.

But there's one thing he's right about, her existence is a lie.

Joey put burden of "protecting the cycle" on her while she thought that she's an orphan.

Batdr archives also question how much agency she has, which i find interesting.

7. "The illusion of living" (or TL;DR for this analysis)

The art of lying masterfully and manual on how to justice God complex.

Joey describes his life from early childhood (when he was 5 y.o.) and to the point of him being 42-43 y.o., a bit before the ink machine was created.

This book is about a man who couldn't find his purpose in life even with the help of other people and decided to blame everyone for this.

Lies, accusations, insults, distorted information, searching for "a soul" (literally and figuratively) and never ending hidden sadness after he lost Henry.

He tries to replace this empty gap with letting their creations become his whole life but it doesn't end well... (the ink demon,dead employees and the cycle)

He tries to separate himself from this and focused on creating a family.

Artificial daughters are electric boogalo №2 (unexpected direct sequel) which has ended working somehow.

But still,i wouldn't trust this man even a pet rock and the ink demon & Audrey are a proof on 'why.'

A christmas party

A Christmas party with costume themes can add an extra layer of fun and excitement. Here are some festive Christmas party costume themes to consider:

Just looking up weird houses and found a house plush I want.

I always I find weird or ugly houses interesting and the interior being a little off.

I wonder what the lure body will look like.

If I finally draw all my infected realtor house oc's these might be new ones.

My lure body guesses.

The monster house just a person with a lot of hair but is like a normal human or just has a beard while looking wolfman like with a cartoon house with chimney fungmammal.

Looks like a bootleg I.M Meen CDI like character in both look and movement.

The curved house being like the crooked man in design wise and has a stoplight fungmammal that changes into the base form.

If the instrument house had a theme be like.

I image the lurebody playing on a piano while the house flesh body tries to capture the buyer.

I can imagine the shoe house lure realtor being a shoe maker on the side and kicking other Realtors in the shin if they get close to a buyer they want.

Shoemaker elves would be this Realtor's fungmammal shape.

The airplane house lure would be female looking with disheveled clothes like this Realtors lure was in a crashed plane.

The parasite fungmammal is a Silky anteater and doesn't want to be a parasite one but is a glitched mutualism one.

He used to be a Falseperson but after being fired and angry changed into a parasite one then gave up being humanoid.

When she gets a buyer in the crashed plane house body will make the plane body move like it is flying but is in place then act like the plane is nose diving by the gases from the house.

Thinking about making a infected Realtor based of bear and have him be the main singer of the Nosy Neighbors band with Jack Black as the voice canon.

This infected Realtor having a thicc male body type Realtor that is nice and doesn't eat people.

Thinking about fleshing out these weird houses in the images into Infected Realtors.

Maybe making them be in a band called the Nosy Neighbors.

Also my sitcom of Infected Realtors is getting huge dude.

Astarion Ancunin was born in the year of the Carrion Crow, 1229 DR. He was born into Nobility, his family wealthy high elves ~ even if slightly corrupt. He worked his way up to become a Magistrate of the people of Baldur’s Gate and as Magistrate, he ensured to work to keep the peace within the city and imprison the trouble makers. However, in the Year of Daystars, 1268, whilst Astarion was attacked by a group of Gurs, angry about a ruling he’d handed down as Magistrate. They beat him to a pulp on the street before leaving him at death’s door. That was when he first came to meet Cazador Szarr. He chased the gurs off and offered to save Astarion from the deaths door that he was laid at, offering him the chance of eternal life. Given his options, Eternal life or bleed to death on the street, Astarion accepted the offer, unaware of just how long eternity would be.

Now Cazador’s spawn, Astarion was subjected to over two-hundred years of torture. Cazador used him to go out into Baldur’s Gate and find all of the beautiful souls that he could find, luring them back to him. At the time, it was unbeknownst to him that Cazador was using all of the souls Astarion collected, along with Astarion, as part of a ritual. Cazador even made Astarion endure the torment of him cutting into his back, a sort of writing. He described them as “Poems” but they were in fact part of an infernal contract with the archdevil, Mestophiles. The contract would allow Cazador to perform a Rite of Profane Ascension. This in turn, would make Cazador more powerful than ever, with his strengths amplified and him no longer bound by vampiric curses.

If Astarion was successful and brought them back with him, Cazador would allow him to dine with him. Unfortunately, the dining was far from fine, even though Cazador described it as such, giving Astarion dead putrid rats, however, if Astarion ever denied it, Cazador would have him flayed.

In the first decade of his slavery to Cazador, Astarion met a darling boy. He could not bear to lure him back to Cazador so he ran, rather than hurting the sweet man. After he was caught by Cazador, he sealed Astarion, starving, inside a dusty tomb, all alone for an entire year. It was a year of silence, of months scratching his hands raw in attempts to carve his way out. Months of not moving at all; months of longing for death.

In the Year Of Three Sailing Ships, 1492, Astarion met and began seducing a young noble, trying to lure him towards his master. However, as he was, he was kidnapped by a mind flayer and placed into a holding pod in a nautiloid and infected with an Illithid tadpole. After the nautiloid travelled through the planes, it crashed, and Astarion ended up somewhere along the River Chionthar.

Upon awakening, Astarion found himself altered, more powerful, somehow; rather than undergoing the process of ceremorphosis, he was able to resist sunlight and could communicate telepathically. He was no longer under Cazador’s vampiric influence either, and regained his free will.

The crash was ultimately what lead to him meeting an Adventurous Tav. The two, along with a Teifling called Karlach, a Wizard Prodigy named Gale, a Half-Elf named Shadowheart, a Githyanki called Lae’zel, a human warlock named Wyll, a Wood Elf named Halsin, a Drow Paladin named Minthara, a Human Ranger named Minsc and a High Half-Elf named Jaheira, set about finding a way to rid themselves of the tadpoles that infected their minds.

This meant a treacherous quest around vast land, encountering many beings along the way, saving many but also having to hand death to an amount too. Whilst Astarion did not agree to some of the decisions that were made along the way, he was willing to help and to fight.

Being infected by the tadpole made him think differently on things. He did not want to go back to being under Cazador’s torment. He was free with this thing in his mind and, whilst he knew that he could not keep it continuing to infect him, he wanted to become more; wanted to end Cazador’s reign and ascend to vampire master, himself.

Tav agreed to help him and them, along with the others journeyed to Baldur’s Gate and to Cazador’s Palace to confront him. They entered via the South Tower and sought out the entrance to Cazador’s lair. It was a sinister looking door that they had to go through to get to it, rather fitting in Astarion’s mind, to the man it belonged to. Upon entering the lair, they then had to go down into the dungeon. The memories of the place were far from fond for Astarion, but he wanted to put an end to Cazador��s tyranny, once and for all. Through the dungeon then through the doors to the crypt, Cazador was soon located. Astarion could not quite believe his eyes to see his master there, back turned and on his knees, feeding from yet another soul whilst many of his vampire spawn siblings were entrapped around them. Cazador was still hypersensitive to sunlight, a disadvantage to him but an advantage to Astarion. Shadowheart agreed to help, offering to cast Radiance of the Dawn to damage him to the extent he was relatively unable to fight back. Cazador retreated to rest in his sarcophagus but Astarion followed, opening his stone coffin and disturbing him from his healing sleep. He pulled him from it, shoving him to stand before everyone. He used his linked mind with Luminari to see the ritual etched into his back and copied it, carving it on to Cazador’s, ignoring his writhing in pain. Cazador dropped to his knees, weakened from both the blast and Astarion’s carving, at Astarion’s feet as he picked up his staff.

Astarion began the ritual to ascend, sacrificing Cazador and several of the spawns as a result. He was fully expecting all seven-thousand to be sacrificed so, it came as a surprise to him when only a handful of spawns were sacrificed along with Cazador. The feeling of ascension was euphoric and upon the ending of the ritual, Astarion was surprised to not feel that all-consuming hunger that he’d felt for so long as a vampiric spawn, but he no longer has to live in fear of the insatiable hunger or in fear of the sun and he certainly will not be the same man that Cazador had long been.

Whilst several of the other companions disapproved of his choices, Astarion made a vow that he would continue to help them in saving the city and them with their tadpole problems. He offered them the palace as a place of respite for the duration of time that it might take.

Enasal’s father carved both she and her sister effigies of the elven gods while their mother was pregnant with each of them. At Skyhold, they stay on alters she made in her room. Outside, she keeps them in a pouch on her hip.

I have some HC about Enasal’s clan having clothes slightly different than others. Scandinavian-esq patterns are often sewed into the clothes, and wearing covers (similar to caplets and ponchos depending on the weather) are often worn over a shirt that has no or sleeves embroidered and cuffed at the wrist or above the elbow - once again, depending on the weather. The only other nicknames come from Krem, who simply shortens her name to En, and her sister Shiral, who calls her Little Heart - a nickname that suggests someone who is sensitive and tenderhearted.

What is their method of manipulation?

Enasal doesn’t tend to manipulate for anything major. At first, she has no idea she’s doing it. But eventually, she realizes that blinking her big grey eyes up at people can usually get her what she wants. At first, Varric teaches her the skill, but she rarely uses it. Cullen is usually the main victim of her big blinking eyes - it’s rare he can tell her ‘no’ to anything when she pulls that card.

Describe their daily routine.

Enasal’s schedule is jammed pack - if anyone who gives her any sort of lessons (Fade lessons from Solas, reading lesson from Dorian, manners and how to be a proper young lady from Viv, sparring with the chargers, and bladework/lockpicking with Leliana) is out of commission, she actually struggles when her schedule is disrupted.

Oh, but how does she handle being out of Skyhold, you ask?

Because she knows to expect nothing and everything.

As far as leisure, she always eats dinner with Varric, no if, ands, or buts.

Breakfast is spent with the Chargers after their morning drill.

At first, lunch was kind of a free-for-all, but once Cullen survives his lyrium withdrawal and is more willing to eat, they typically eat lunch together.

Also, every evening she and Cullen walk the battlements - this was a tradition even before they had become involved.

Their go-to cure for a bad day?

Gee, could her friends be involved? Of course thet are! Either she ends up having some drinks with her friends, or spending some quiet time with Cullen.

GOALS:

How are they dissatisfied with their life?

Despite her acceptance into the Inquisition and the lives of her friends, Enasal still desperately wants to be accepted by the Dalish. The reason he even went to the Conclave was because her Keeper (the one who was first and orchestrated all the murder and isolation) told her that she would be accepted back into the clan and her name unbound - basically her name was no longer allowed to be spoken.

So, despite everything, she desperately wishes to be considered part of a Dalish clan.

What would bring them true happiness or contentment?

Sadly, what would make her happiest will probably happen.

If the fighting could be over and she and her friends spent the rest of their lives near each other and just as they were in Skyhold, just without the war.

But, she does realize that herself. Sometimes she forgets and then will remember with a lot of sadness.

So she settles into a life in Skyhold with Cullen and those that remain there. Sometimes, she wishes for a little house with a farm tucked away in the woods, but depending on how everything goes, that might or might not happen.

She does eventually gets to have a child, though!

What definitive step could they take to turn their dream into a reality?

If she leaves the Inquisition.

If she were to leave the fighting and the responsibility to hide, she could have a peaceful life with a cottage and a farm and some dogs with Cullen.

I don’t think she could do anything to make all of it a reality, but that’s probably something she could manage.

How has their fear kept them from taking this action already?

Skyhold and the Inquisition is almost everything to Enasal.

It is where she first found friendship and belonging.

It’s where she learned she was good at things and had a voice.

Very little could make her leave.

How do they feel they can accomplish their goal while still steering clear of the thing they are afraid of?

Honestly, I feel like the Inquisition is going to last quite a long time - but eventually, the torch will be passed.

Once that happens, she will finally get her little house with Cullen, a child, and probably some dogs.

So, it just relies on patience and doing everything she can until that time comes.

12 Prompts of Christmas - #10 Santa

TEN - Santa

Standing on the New York City sidewalks wearing jeans and an oversized red Santa coat, Richard Castle gathered together the group of pre-teens trailing behind him and lined them up against the side of the building to address them. They were all festively dressed in some way: one girl had a headband that also mimicked elf ears, another had a hair clip fashioned out of a Christmas wrap bow, and a third wore a festive sweater beneath her purple coat. Rick’s own child was fully decked out with a green ribbon in her hair, Christmas tree shaped earrings, and bells tied onto her shoes with red ribbons.

Smiling down at them, he asked, “Okay ladies, are we ready?”

“Yeah!” they chorused back to him.

“Great. Then we’re all ready to go but remember: stay close to me while we’re inside. You wouldn’t want someone to accidentally think you’re a police officer,” he told them with a dramatic wink.

“Dad,” his daughter, Alexis, groaned.

Rick held up a finger signaling for her to hold on a moment. Then, he donned his red Santa hat and from his pocket he pulled out a white fake beard which he hooked on using loops that went over his ears. Once it was in place, he reminded her, “Not Dad—Santa.”

Now fully outfitted, Rick led the parade of kids into the police station, proud he was getting to spend his afternoon not only helping the hard-working members of the NYPD, but also teaching impressionable young girls an important lesson about giving back and being kind.

Inside the police station Rick walked up to the welcome desk and pleasantly said, “Good afternoon.”

The cop at the desk eyed him a bit suspiciously and asked, “Can I help you, sir?”

“Yes, I called ahead. Richard Castle. The elves and I are here to deliver Christmas cards to the brave officers of the NYPD,” he said, stepping aside and gesturing towards the four girls clustered around him, who each held a shopping bag filled with goodies.

Now smiling, the female officer nodded and reached for the telephone on her desk. “Ah, right. Hold on, I’ll call an escort for you.”

“Thank you very much.”

The group waited patiently for about five minutes before a woman dressed in a black business suit approached them and asked, “Hi, I’m Denise from PR; are you from Spenser Academy?”

“That’s us!” one of the girls exclaimed.

The woman smiled at her, then addressed the group as a whole, “Well on behalf of the NYPD I’d like to thank you for your generous gifts. What have you brought us today?”

“We have about three dozen holiday cards and some handmade ornaments and decorations to hang up if that’s okay,” Rick said to Denise.

“Absolutely! We appreciate everything you’re willing to give to us. Let’s go to the third floor, okay? they haven’t had any Christmas visitors yet.”

“Have you had many other schools visit this year?” Rick asked as they shuffled their way towards the elevator. He knew there were several other groups from Alexis’s grade as well as the one above hers participating in the holiday cheer project, though some were donating décor and cards to fire stations and hospitals as well as the NYPD. He also believed other private schools in the city were participating in similar projects.

“Just one other one here so far, but I’ve had several others at other precincts.”

“That’s nice. It’s such an important time of year to give back.”

“I agree. You’re a teacher at the school?”

Rick checked and put his hand on Alexis’s shoulder. “No, no—parent volunteer. This is my daughter, Alexis.”

“Hi,” the young redhead said demurely.

Denise smiled down at her. “Hello. Well, we do appreciate your time.”

Rick nodded in appreciation. He had always enjoyed volunteering at Alexis’s school and never really thought of it as a chore or even an obligation. As someone who loved children, he found it a joy. Plus, as his career enabled him to be both a full-time writer and a full-time stay-at-home Dad, he always felt a duty to volunteer for what he could because he knew that many of Alexis’s classmates had two working parents, and it was not always possible for them to chaperone field trips or organize bake sales like he could.

When the elevator’s doors opened again and Denise led the way out into the hall, Rick asked her, “What department is this?”

“The homicide division.”

“Ah,” Rick said hesitantly. While he wouldn’t have minded poking around that floor, he wasn’t sure it was entirely appropriate for ten- and eleven-year-old girls. Nevertheless, their visit was not intended to be a long one, so he stepped forward and turned so he could address his group. “Well, okay ladies, here we go. How about…Paige and Hannah hand out the cards while Alexis, Ryder, and I hang up some decorations, okay?”

Their girls swapped their shopping bags around to match up with Rick’s duty assignments and then the two with the holiday cards scampered off. Meanwhile, Denise directed Rick and the remaining two girls to a room centrally located on the floor. “You can hang your decorations here in the break room.”

“Perfect. Thank you,” Rick said to her and led the way inside the room. It was empty save for an officer talking on a cell phone, who walked out the opposite door when they entered. Rick led the girls over to one of the tables in the room and they opened up their shopping bags and began to unload the decorations. From the bag he carried, Rick pulled out a few rolls of tape. He handed one to Ryder and told her to hang up the snowflake decorations they had on the break room windows. Then, he turned to his daughter and asked, “Do you want to hang up the snowmen?”

She nodded. “Yeah, let’s put some on the cabinets,” she said, pointing towards the kitchenette in the room which had a sink along with a counter that had a coffee maker, toaster oven, and microwave. Off to the side was a refrigerator, all of which was surrounded by cabinets.

“Sounds good.”

Alexis put a snowman centrally located on each of the doors to the bottom row of cabinets. Then Rick brought a chair over from one of the tables so she could climb up on it and reach the upper cabinets. She was still too short, though, so he had to help hang the last row of snowmen.

He was about halfway done when he heard the breakroom door swing open and a female’s voice say, “Oh! I didn’t realize anyone else was in here.”

“Yep, sorry; we’ll be done in a minute,” Rick said as he struggled to get the sticky tape out of the dispenser.

“We’re decorating!” Alexis said.

“I can see that,” said the female voice.

With the last snowman tacked into place, Rick stepped back, helped his daughter off the chair, then quickly grabbed it so it was not in the way if the woman wanted to access the kitchenette counter. “Sorry about that,” he said again, only glancing briefly in her direction, “Alexis, what else do you want to hang up?”

“Let’s put the stars on the refrigerator,” she suggested.

Rick hesitated and glanced over his shoulder to see what the woman was doing. When he saw her at the coffee pot, he agreed with, “Okay, but let’s make sure not to stand in this nice lady’s way.”

“Oh, it’s fine; I don’t need to get into the fridge,” she assured them. With her mug now full of coffee, she turned to face them and Rick finally met her eye. Immediately, he felt like he’d been smacked in the chest. Her face…he knew her face, but from where?

“Are you a police officer?” Alexis asked the woman as she hung up the stars.

“A detective, actually.”

“Ohh!! I’m in fifth grade, but I might want to be a detective when I grow up—a private detective, just like Sherlock Holms!”

“Oh wow, that’s neat!” the detective said.

“Santa, I finished hanging the snowflakes. Santa? Santa!”

“Wha—oh, sorry Ryder,” Rick apologized, when Ryder tugged on the sleeve of his coat. He’d been too busy staring at the female detective wondering where he’d seen her before. “What do you want to hang up next?”

“Um…maybe some of the garland chain along that window ledge?”

“Sure thing.” Rick walked over to the shopping bags and pulled out the long chain of “garland” the girls had made, which consisted of round circles of alternating light and green construction paper all stapled together to form a chain. “Alexis why don’t you come and help Ryder once you’re done with those stars?”

“Okay, Da—Santa!” She grinned at him then ran past him to help her schoolmate.

When Rick turned back around, he was pleasantly surprised to see the female detective was still in the breakroom, eyeing him curiously. “Sorry, ah, this is our first year as a decorating committee; we’re a little rough around the edges.”

“Oh, that’s okay. I think what you’re doing is really nice. Are you…are you also associated with the two girls running around giving away Christmas cards?”

The writer frowned behind his Santa beard. “Oh no are they running? I told them not to run.”

She laughed and said, “It’s fine,” but the words barely registered in his mind because with her laugh came the solid recognition he’d been seeking. Yes, he definitely recognized her, but he could hardly believe it was her—her—the woman he’d encountered so briefly their interaction felt more like a dream.

So caught up by the sudden recognition, Rick failed to realize he’d gasped, “Oh—it’s you!” out loud until her brow wrinkled and she asked, “Excuse me?”

“Sorry, sorry. I mean—you’re Kate, aren’t you?”

Her brow crinkled further. “Do we know each other?”

“Yea—oh, sorry. Crap! Sorry!” he grunted as he tried to strip off his fake beard and hat, which until that moment he had forgotten that he was wearing. No wonder she didn’t recognize him!

With his face fully exposed her confused expression melted into one of surprise. “Oh! Rick. H-hi.”

“Hi,” he echoed, his grin a bit dopey. Once again, he had run into this mysterious, beautiful woman by chance and he could not say he was remotely disappointed about it. Since they’d first met, five Decembers prior, he’d thought about her occasionally over the years, mostly over the holidays, but occasionally during trips out to his beach house since the water combined with the vacation atmosphere connected it and the lake cabin in his mind. He’d never gotten to the point of actually trying to find her, but he’d thought about it several times. Now, it appeared fate was nudging him and he wasn’t going to deny it.

“We’re done!”

His daughter announcing the completion of their task pulled Rick back to the present and he stammered a bit. “Oh, um, ah, yeah—is there anything left to hang up, girls?”

“No,” Alexis said. She gazed around the room and frowned slightly, adding, “I guess we didn’t have that much to decorate with.”

“Oh no—I think it looks much more festive in here,” Kate chimed in.

Rick gave her a grateful expression then turned back to the girls. “Okay, ladies, why don’t you gather up the bags and tape dispensers and then let’s go find the others, okay?”

“Thank you for decorating our break room,” Kate said to them before heading towards the door. Before she could open it, Rick stepped towards her.

“Wait! I mean, um, how are you?”

Looking slightly amused she said, “I’m okay, how are you?”

“Good, good. Um, I was just…well, wondering if I might be able to take you out for coffee and, um, pick your brain a little bit about the NYPD. Always doing research,” he confessed with a little shrug. In reality his heart was racing, and he felt like a teenager again. God, what was he doing? He wasn’t even trying to ask her out on a date as his romantic situation was…complicated…at present.

She arched an eyebrow at him. “If I recall correctly: you already did that.”

He shrugged one shoulder. “But you weren’t a detective then.”

She chuckled lightly and then waited about seven seconds before agreeing, “Okay, sure. Coffee.”

“Great!” Rick said, elated. He fumbled for a moment, trying to get his wallet out of his back pocket when the bulky Santa coat hung down over it, but he managed. Then he handed her a business card and said, “Call me, please? we’ll set something up.”

She took the card with a nod. By that time, the girls had collected their bags and had joined them at the breakroom door, so Kate pushed it open and let them all walk out. As they did so, Alexis wished her a merry Christmas and she reciprocated with, “Merry Christmas to you, too; and thanks again for the decorations.”

“You’re welcome!” Alexis said cheerfully.

After giving Rick a head nod, Kate walked off. He watched her disappear into the crowd of her coworkers until the high-pitched squeal of a ten-year-old girl drew his attention and he knew he needed to get back into chaperone-mode before the girls caused too much more chaos for the homicide floor.

FINALLY MADE IT THROUGH MY CANON PLAYTROUGHT!

This wasn’t my first gameplay of DAI, but after a male Qunari and a male elf, finally decided to play the story that would make me cry the most.

My female Inquisitor Lara Lavellan made it through hell and high water to save Thedas and its people, but in the end she decided it was time to lay down her spiritual sword (and staff) and disband the Inquisition.

Now, Lara prepare herself and her allies to face the greatest threat that Thedas has ever faced. She loves her Dread Wolf, and will make anything within her power to change his heart and save the world she spent so much time trying to protect.

MY CHOICES (AND HEADCANONS):

Divine: Leliana, softened. She was the most trusted advisor of the Inquisitor, and Lara taught her to look beyond violent methods, and to use compassion. Some say that she became closer to Leliana after returning from the apocalyptic future she experienced at Redcliffe, although she never completely said what she saw there. After Corypheus’ defeat, the Hero of Ferelden returned to stand beside his beloved. His discoveries in other lands have not yet been made public. When he arrived at Skyhold, he spent a long time talking to the Inquisitor, and they were seen together often before he and Leliana left to Orlais. According to reports, they exchange letters, and those became more frequent after the Exalted Council. It is also known that both traveled to Kirkwall for a visit to Hawke, but the subjects of that meeting are not known.

The Mage Rebellion ended at Redcliffe, and the mages joined the Inquisition. Fiona took over the leadership of the Council after they were released from their service in the Inquisition, and she and the Inquisitor share a mutual respect. It is known that she tries to contact King Alistair of Ferelden, but with no response from him. Both the Inquisitor and the Hero of Ferelden have made constant visits to the Grand Enchantress after the Exalted Council. Alexius was a prisoner in Skyhold, and Dorian took him back to Tevinter when he left, where he works to correct the mistakes caused with the Venatori.

With the help from Lara and her Inquisition, Clan Lavellan survived the Venatori attacks and are now settled at Wycome. After Corypheus’s defeat, Lara made an official visit to the city together with the Inquisition, and introduced her friends to the family that raised her.

Thanks to Stroud’s sacrifice on the Fade, the Inquisitor, Hawke and their group were able to escape Nightmare. Lara believed there was honor among the Wardens, and recruited them to help the Inquisition. After Corypheus’ defeat, they set out to rebuild their Order, and opened their doors to the world. Now they would help humanity whenever necessary, and not just in the Blights. Hawke was at Weisshaupt, but what happened there is not public knowledge. He is currently in Kirkwall, helping his friend Varric. He is believed to be one of the Inquisitor’s agents, seeking information about Fen'Harel in the Free Marches.

The ball at the Winter Palace was a unique experience in Lara’s life. She stopped a murderer, danced before the court, discovered scandalous secrets and negotiated the peace in Orlais. Thanks to documents she found scattered around the Palace, she had enough evidence to get the three parties to agree, without spilling a drop of blood. After that, the court organizes a new ball every year on that date to commemorate the peace obtained by the Inquisition. This invitation, Lara always declines, saying that she has had enough of Orlesian politics for her entire life. After the event, Florianne was made a court jester in Skyhold, and after the Exalted Council, she got a job in Antiva serving Josephine’s family in the same role.

The Inquisitor was delighted with the findings at the Temple of Mythal. When given the choice, she chose to drink from the Well of Sorrows to preserve the legacy of her people. After that, she devoted much of the forces of the Inquisition in search of other lost temples, looking for other ancient elves still alive. She faced Samson, and defeated him easily thanks to Dagna’s skills. He became a prisoner at Skyhold, perishing before the Exalted Council.

Cassandra is considered the right hand of the Inquisitor, despite her doubts about the elf after the Conclave explosion. She accompanied Lara on her most dangerous missions: crossing the Fade, unraveling the plots of Halamshiral, facing Hakkon in Frostback Basin, exploring the Deep Roads, discovering the mysteries of the Temple of Mythal and facing Corypheus in the final battle. Lara accompanied her on her mission to Caer Oswin, where together they faced Lord Seeker Lucius. The Inquisitor declared full support for her decision to rebuild the Order of Seekers. Many believe that their secret work in the Hunterhorn Mountains has something to do with the fight against Fen'Harel, but the Order remains silent on these questions.

Cullen and the Inquisitor did not always get along on all issues, mainly because Lara disagreed with the Templar Order and found them guilty of the chaos in Thedas. But she always respected the commander’s skills, and she cared about him. When the Inquisitor discovered of his problems with lirium, she trusted him and helped him overcome his addiction. Cullen returned to Ferelden after the Inquisition was disbanded.

Despite not always choosing diplomatic solutions, the Inquisitor has become a good friend of Josephine, who has always been kind to her since her arrival in Haven. With Lara’s help, Josephine restored her family’s name, making use of a diplomatic move to stop the House of Repose and be able to negotiate with Orlais again. It is also known that her sister, Ivette, is a great admirer of Lady Lavellan, and has invited her numerous times to visit their home in Antiva after the Exalted Council.

Dorian met the Inquisitor at Redcliffe, and helped her on the mission to recruit the mages and defeat Alexius. Together, they crossed an alternative future where Corypheus had won, and have become close since then. Dorian taught Lara a lot about his culture, about magic and the value of a good bottle of wine. She helped him heal his relationship with his father, Magister Halward Pavus, and that was what cemented their great friendship. Lara was even happier when Dorian revealed his relationship with another great friend of hers, the Iron Bull. Dorian gave all the support to Lara after the departure of her lover, Solas, and she was always grateful to him for that. Dorian had to return to his homeland, but he was able to see his great friend once again at the Exalted Council. He gave her a magic crystal that would allow them to communicate even from afar. Dorian is believed to be working secretly for Lara in Tevinter in search of allies to fight Fen'Harel.

Bull, despite his crude manner, became a good friend of the Inquisitor, and taught her to see the needs of her people and put herself in the shoes of her soldiers. He accompanied the Inquisitor on many dragon hunts through Thedas. Bull became a Tal-Vashoth and hasn’t betrayed the Inquisition. He and Dorian fell in love shortly after he left the Qun.

The Inquisitor has always believed in the potential for good in each person. When Blackwall revealed the truth about who he was, Lara chose to release him and gave him another chance to prove his worth in the Inquisition, reminding him of all the good he had done so far. This act of compassion and mercy inspired Thom to spread kindness over Thedas, bringing comfort to the damned and hope to the people.

Varric had been with Lara since the beginning of the Inquisition, and she held him in the highest regard. She became very fond of his writing, and was more surprised to discover the dwarf’s faith in Andraste and the Maker. Although Lara is a Dalish and believes in the Elven gods, Varric’s faith inspired her to accept her role as Herald of Andraste, and to help the Chantry become a beacon of hope for the faithful once again. Lara helped Varric track down the source of the red lirium used by Corypheus, in an old thaig at the Hinterlands. She supported him after he discovered that his old beloved Bianca was the one who had delivered the ore to the Venatori. Varric was the one who taught Lara to play Wicked Grace, where together they provided epic matches for the inhabitants of Skyhold. He is now Viscount of Kirkwall, and Lara came to visit him after the Exalted Council.

Sera was recruited, and despite the differences with the Inquisitor, they became good friends. She invited Lara to be a part of her group, the Red Jennies, an invitation that the Inquisitor accepted. After the Exalted Council, there was a growing movement in the activities of this group, reaching areas where they did not previously work. Whether this has anything to do with the Inquisitor or her fight against Fen'Harel, it cannot be said.

Cole was recruited into the Inquisition, despite protests from almost every member. Lara saw him as her son, and he taught her the value of compassion and mercy. With the help of her ally Solas, Lara helped Cole understand his nature, and made him more spirit than human. Cole was often seen with Lara after Solas’ mysterious departure, offering comfort to the one who held out his hand when everyone turned their backs on him. He returned to Fade after the Exalted Council.

Vivienne was recruited after an epic masquerade at her home. Although both were mages, Lara and she had very different views about the Circles, but even so the Inquisitor considered her a friend and ally. Vivienne, along with Leliana and Josephine, were responsible for introducing Lara to Orlais’ political game and all its plots and subplots. The Inquisitor did not think twice when Madame de Fer asked for her help in saving her beloved Duke Bastien, although the effort proved unsuccessful. After Corypheus’s defeat, Vivienne accompanied Lara on several visits to Orlais, and they were often seen together at a spa or visiting Vivienne’s dressmaker.

Solas, now known to us as Fen'Harel, the Dread Wolf, was perhaps Lara’s closest ally, so close that they became lovers. He showed our young elf the mysteries of the Fade and the memories of ages past, and those who traveled with them say that they spent a lot of time in ancient forests and the ruins of their people. She helped him defend a friend in trouble in the Emerald Plains: a spirit of wisdom. After Lara drank from Well of Sorrows, he was angry with her, for believing that the elven gods were terrible creatures and that she was now in the service of one of them, but she was able to placate his fury. Together, they traveled to Crestwood, and there he performed a spell to remove Lara’s vallaslin, which he claimed to be a slave brand in the days of the Arlathan Empire (which we now know to be true). However, he ended his relationship with Inquisitor, saying he was interfering with her obligations. Lara never forgot Solas, nor did she stop loving him. His mysterious departure after Corypheus’s defeat left an open wound in the Inquisitor’s chest, and she was only able to endure the pain with the help of her friends. Discovering the truth during the Exalted Council left her partially relieved. Even after discovering the Dread Wolf’s plan, Lara still loves him. And she knows that he still loves her too: he risked his plan to come and save her from the Anchor. She is determined to change her lover’s heart so that they can be together again:

“Lavellan sometimes came awake from dreams in which her lover watched her sadly from across an endless distance. If they were more than simple dreams, she could not say, for every time she reached for him, he vanished into nothing. Still she searched, and dreamed, and waited, for a way to change the Dread Wolf’s heart.”

I recorded my Trespasser ending (since the conversation with Solas) and was thinking of posting it here. What do you think? Anyway, playing this game was an incredible experience, and I am very happy with this ending. I can’t wait for Dragon Age 4!
