IV - THE EMPEROR
i haven't posted in forever cuz of some serious art block and burnout, but i'm back now!! honestly trying to be a content creator as an artist sucks especially on instagram lol but i'm trying to get better about it... also i'm gonna be doing a less detailed explanation of my choices for my tarot cards mostly bc it's been a pain for me to post once I have a finished product and i want to keep the content coming
i chose a somewhat obvious answer for The Emperor with John, considering. he is Literally the emperor lmao. but I think it fits with the tarot meaning pretty well! upright, The Emperor is a commanding presence and a symbol of authority. reversed, the card suggests an abuse of power, which is essentially all we see of John in NTN. he gets an incredible gift from the Earth and just. nukes all of the solar system LMAO.
i want to try and explore more with composition and backgrounds in my next card, THE HIEROPHANT. i feel like my backgrounds are one of the weaker points in my drawings and i want to make a more compelling and cohesive image... so that's gonna be my main focus on the next card methinks. anyways thanks for sticking around and being patient with me, i'm hoping to getting back to just being on the blog more often!

I gots a little busy (and by busy I meant my depression flared up) but I finally finished her! The glass was a pain to paint! hopefully you like it! I present to you Cinderella from dimension20's Neverafter as The Emperor Tarot Card, I thought of giving her justice, but I love her powerful presence in the game and how she took 6d8 damage and shrugged it off!

Charlotte's Art History Tarot - Card 4 - The Emperor
Tumblr media
Art: The White Devil – John Collier
pull this card
the emperor is a card about authority and power. it is a card that indicates some form of leadership, and often one that suggests that you have risen to this elevated position as a result of your own hard work and determination. the emperor is also all about rules, regulations, and control. control over the people you lead, over your own power, over your own life. as soon as I saw this painting of Elizabeth I, I simply knew it just had to be the emperor card. Elizabeth occupied such a strange place in terms of control, since she spent the majority of her life fighting not only for literal power and control, but also for the image of power and control - to present herself as unshakable, and her monarchical power unassailable. perhaps unsurprisingly given the distinct feminine cast of the empress in traditional understanding of tarot (you can find my more detailed explanation of that here), the emperor is often associated with masculinity and/or male figures. again, I just don't love the binary gendering that's happening here, which is another reason why I picked Elizabeth for this card. she has such an interesting and complicated relationship with gender throughout her own self-presentation, especially after she becomes queen. she is the first "legitimate," recognized female monarch of England in an incredibly unstable political climate. there were concerns about what to do with a woman on the throne, including the fact that, as a woman, she could rule as queen, but technically couldn't hold the title of the leader of the Church of England, which her father - Henry VIII - established as a title that would be held by the ruling monarch. on one hand, she wanted to present herself in a way that was more aligned with the expectations of a king, saying this to her troops during a speech: "I have the body but of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart and stomach of a king." however, she also styled herself as "the virgin queen," which was an attribute that was very tied to femininity at this time. basically what I'm trying to say here is that I chose Elizabeth I for the emperor card because I like the way she muddies the gendered associations of it and breaks us out of the traditional gender binary. sorry for the whole history lesson lmao 😅. on a visual level, this particular image (made hundred of years after she lived) has these sharp, straight lines - a kind of rigidity that really speaks to the "rules and control" message of the emperor. she also has this very calm, collected kind of confidence that suggests that she is aware of her own power and isn't afraid to wield it.

All About Tarot: The Major Arcana
Tumblr media
The Emperor
Tumblr media
The Emperor, also called "The king", "the green man" or "greenman" but names may vary in different sets. This card is the fifth to pull in an unshuffled deck, being named number 4 in the major arcana, as well is assigned the astrological sign of Aries.
Tumblr media
Upright this card often means stability, leadership, bravery, bold action(s), structure, authority, regulation, organization, fatherhood/fatherliness/talk of a father figure or adopting a fatherly role, nearing a new level of mastery, power, strength, success, and several other interpretations.
Reversed this card has associations such as; immaturity, pettiness, rigidity, domination, anger, shying away from the role of a leader or role model someone may be holding you to/you may be offered, abuse of power(especially the power of authority) often from an older/masculine figure in your life, and more.
in general this card may read about, of course, authoritative figures in your life or being one yourself-either reaching that level or shying away from that role, often it mentions a fatherly role or figure whether that be yourself(regardless of your own gender) or someone in your life. This card tends to be read in talk of a persons relationship with their father when pulled in a 3 card spread (past/present/future) but has many different interpretations depending on the reader (this just happens to be one of the most common interpretations of this card).
Tumblr media
Common depictions in the art of this card are a king or man of power or stature of some sort and similar to the empress he's often sitting with a crown on his head, facing forward with a sword usually seen in his right hand. more often than not this card tends to depict an elderly man in king's robes with a long white beard.
common colours tend to be reds, yellows and off-whites, while other imagery in the card may be things like the sun setting in the background (or colours in the background representing such), and possibly some depiction of a goat whether that be his throne decorated with goat heads or a goat at his feet. the goat often being a sign of aries, the zodiac this card is aligned with.

4. The Emperor
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left: The Forager's Daughter deck Right: Rider-Waite deck
Element: Fire
Planet: Mars
Numerology: 4 represents stability
Keywords: order, authority, leader, structure, protector
Pop culture: Mufasa, Minerva Mcgonagall, Bob (Bob's Burgers), Elrond (LOTR), Yellow Diamond (Steven Universe)
Symbols: The four ram heads on the throne represent Aries/Mars. The ankh they are holding in their right hand is the Egyptian symbol for life. The orb represents the world that they rule. Their red robe is symbolic of passion, power, and energy. Their armor protects them from everything, even emotions. But the river in the background symbolizes that they can be reached with emotion if we go deep enough. Their age shows their wisdom. And the mountains in the back mean they have a solid, immovable foundation.
Quotes: "Happiness is not a matter of intensity, but of balance, order, rhythm, and harmony." Thomas Merton; "A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way." John C. Maxwell; "A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus, but a molder of consensus." Martin Luther King Jr.
I felt very opposed to the emperor when I first started reading about them. I'm a feminist and this just seemed like the "patriarchy" card. I've really been trying to keep gender out of the cards, but this one is hard. Listening to the Between the Worlds podcast really helped me, though. They did a great job of addressing the patriarchy and toxic masculinity parts of this card, while also talking about all the good things, too. This card is for when I need to get my life back in order. There's an order to everything, even in nature, and it's a good thing. I need rocks in my life to hold onto. Like my husband or my mom or my daily bowl of cereal. I think this card could also be a signal to me to recognize the leaders in my life or even question them a bit. I need to make sure they are the right leaders to follow. And lastly, maybe this card could be calling me to leadership. Maybe I need to lead the way in some area of my life.
As part of my study, I use the Tarot Card Meanings Workbook by Brigit Esselmont, biddytarotcard.com, brainyquotes.com (I use the card’s keywords to search for quotes that speak to me), Pinterest to look at other artistic interpretations, and Between the Worlds podcast.
