My knowledge of Supernatural comes from gleanings from Tumblr and fics, slowly working my way through some SPN podcasts (basically I'm still in the early seasons, with some listening regarding Season 15), and checking out wiki pages, so I'm sure that skews my thoughts on Supernatural.

In-universe, Chuck refers to Castiel as the Angel of Thursday and we don't get exploration of his identity as Shield of God or Angel of Solitude and Tears. Angel of Thursday to angels must mean Angel of The Fourth Day of The Week, rather than meaning Angel of Thursday, Angel of Thor's Day the way it does to me as an English speaker, and I'm having thoughts.

I don't know how disrespectful it is to think of Norse mythology as just being mythology and not religion in the modern day, and that's not even taking into account Christianity creating the term "pagan" and having such a large, purposeful impact replacing and stamping out other religions. But as someone for whom that's not my religion, my feelings on the archangel Gabriel being Loki are generally acceptance because it isn't personal for me, because it's just fiction and also I believe in fiction being able to play around and express different things, and because to my ignorant self who thinks of Odin and Thor as being the most important Norse gods, it was respectful because it wasn't the furthest step over the line and immediately raising flags of sacrilege and blasphemy. So with those immediate thoughts about Gabriel and Loki, it's just a neat coincidence to me that Castiel has a tangential connection to a Norse god too in Thor because of Thursday.

But I like thinking about etymology and identity, and I've read that in real life some consider Castiel an archangel (but that was like the sum total information I found), so that makes it more fitting to me that Castiel's connection is with a greater Norse god, and also more appropriate for me to want to take Fourth Day of The Week as Fourth Day of Creation because of its greater significance and religious weight. In Christianity, the Fourth Day of Creation is the day God created the Sun, the Moon, and the stars, and I really like the idea of connecting Castiel to that because it's so celestial; it's poetic to me because of his identity as an angel and it's romantic to me because it's the Sun, the Moon, and the stars. My etymology and identity loving self should really try to read about the alternate interpretations of Castiel as an archangel and with the Cassiel and Qafsiel spellings.

It's interesting how meaning is taken not just from names, but from stories and specifically how stories are told. Gabriel first appears on Supernatural as an unidentified trickster god/demigod, and is referred to as "the trickster". Grammatically, in-universe the other characters mean " the" as in "the one we're dealing with". But the way storytelling and audience interpretation work, the weight of his role as a returning character and the lack of other trickster gods ever appearing on the show (Mercury is described without the trickster title, and for this I'm counting Loki as one with Gabriel) make it like "The Trickster", like he's the paragon of trickster gods, the most significant and powerful one.

If you just know that and that he's also Loki, that's like a compliment to Loki and to Norse religion/mythology. But there's more to how the storytelling affects the evolution and interpretation of the character. Gabriel's appearance as an anonymous trickster is in Seasons 2 and 3, and the revelation of his identity as the archangel Gabriel is in Season 5. That reveal without further explanation or backstory creates the assumption that Gabriel either created a random trickster identity, created that particular trickster god's identity and that trickster god is invalid, or stole a trickster god's identity (possibly having killed that trickster god)--and the assumption that all trickster gods are lesser to him and lesser to Christianity. To be fair trickster gods were already described as being like demigods, but still it hits different. These are kind of insulting to Loki.

Specifically, Gabriel's (archangel) identity is revealed in early/mid Season 5 and he's identified as Loki, specifically, as a trickster god in late Season 5 and then in Season 13 actual Loki appears and it's revealed how Gabriel came to take on his identity. Having Gabriel's trickster persona identified as Loki without further explanation or backstory for so long, that storytelling leaned into the audience interpretation that Loki might be invalid as a Norse god or that Gabriel might have harmed him when stealing his identity. That origin story finally comes out and it turns out that Gabriel helped Loki and was allowed to take on his identity with Loki's permission and to mutual benefit, but still the (lack of) storytelling up to that reveal is disrespectful to Loki. The actual storyline with Loki also doesn't treat him great.

But it's not just about how the storytelling's pacing influenced audience interpretation of Loki, it's about how it influenced the audience's interpretation of Gabriel. For so long the audience knew Gabriel with Loki's face and characteristics, and so that's how he is to the fandom. I could just be wrong because my Season 13 knowledge is so sketchy, and I don't really seek out Gabriel content so probably I just haven't encountered other people asking these questions and posing these ideas: Is Gabriel actually like Loki's trickster persona? Did Season 13 establish that that coincidentally helped with Gabriel taking on Loki's persona? Or does fandom just run with that characterization because that's so much of how they know and like Gabriel pre-Season 13 and they know so little of authentic Gabriel even post-Season 13? Where are the posts reconciling headcanon by saying Loki was a good identity to fake because Gabriel already had a trickster-like personality and liked sweets, or that Gabriel became the mask? I love the idea that Castiel came to identify with Jimmy Novak's appearance as his vessel as his own human appearance, but what about Gabriel? He doesn't even have his vessel's appearance to latch onto and identify with; he's been using Loki's visage the whole time. What are Gabriel's feelings on owning Loki's appearance as his own when he's always kept it packaged with acting like Loki (unlike other angels who separate appearing as their vessels and still being themselves) and given his not modifying it as the secret of his identity has come out and there's been less point keeping up the ruse? (Admittedly, when his true identity as Gabriel was revealed, it was on a small scale and: there was still worth in not dropping the Loki persona for his own sake, he needed to preserve appearances for Loki's sake in their mutually beneficial deal, and until he killed Loki he had the option of fully taking on Loki's identity. (In fact, he still had that option after killing Loki, it just wouldn't work with the people who knew he killed Loki.))

CASTIEL’s role in Evolution of Life on Earth

CW: this is my most nerdy post to date. It is highly technical, but the findings are important.

CASTIEL can be read as an amino acid sequence (cysteine-alanine-serine-threonine-isoleucine-glutamic acid-leucine). Amino acids are of course building blocks of proteins, and our DNA codes for amino acid sequences of various proteins that drive the biological functions of all species.  

I searched the amino acid sequence CASTIEL against all sequenced genomes (it’s called a BLAST search, in my case through UniProtKB database).   Only a very small number of hits returned: the presence of CASTIEL motif in 33 predicted proteins (out of over 60 million sequences in the database), in bacteria, fungi, and protists (including marine algae)--mostly single-celled organisms that started life on earth.  Certainly none in human or Neanderthal genomes.

Synopsis: CASTIEL is an ancient sequence motif that briefly appeared at the beginning of life on earth and then disappeared from all genomes.  

But we already know he predated humans, Neanderthals, and little grey fish.  

The species  CASTIEL are found in include extremely important microbes that allowed for the existence and evolution of life such as planktonic bacteria and nitrogen fixing bacteria.  It is also in a species of marine microalgae.  In recent research, it was discovered that the nutrient content of microalgae doubled over the last 540 million years, meaning it became a richer source of food, enabling progressive evolution of larger, more complex and more motile organisms that fed on the algae--ultimately allowing grey little fish to emerge. (However, my favorite "CASTIEL” containing species are 3 types of Streptomyces , a soil bacterium that’s responsible for the earthy scent when fresh rain hit the soil after a dry spell.) 

The presence of the CASTIEL sequence within the genome is also mysterious.  They are always outside of the predicted “functional” part of the protein. 

My theory: Castiel made little nudges to those early single-celled organisms to give them increased ability to promote the evolution of increasingly complex life over the next 500ish million years.  In 33 cases, he was so proud of his work, he signed those genomes with his name in an inconspicuous place in the amino acid sequence.

i think the funniest thing to witness as someone who was in supernatural fandom in the early days and hasn't been in many years is the discourse about wincest.

because like. i cannot emphasize enough how wincest in the pre-castiel days was treated as an absolutely bog-standard slash ship.

standard shippy tropes circa 2005-2009, indistinguishable from the way people wrote any other odd-couple ship of the era. the fact that the characters were brothers often didn't come up at all, and if it did it was often just not a big concern. if you weren't into it because of, you know, the incest thing, you were politely considered a little odd, but to each their own. this probably has a lot to do with the fact that until s4 there was literally no one else you could plausibly ship either character with, but it's still unbelievably funny to me to witness the evolution there

I love this story. I love the pack dynamics and how they all are despite Dean being the Pack Alpha. I love that they even have an extended pack as well (Claire, for example). I love that the reader has to learn the world and shows a very real world freak out over the information as well as how the pack dynamic and tactics work with and without Dean and Sam. I love how gentle and human Dean and the Reader are together. It’s a very relatable story with new relationships. I related to the Reader’s self-view very, very much. I’m gonna start including pack dynamics in my own a/b/o fics. I love that idea, so so much. Evolution is slow to change, so even if a/b/o was an evolutionary change, it doesn’t mean that all aspects would change with modern day society. Please check the story out and the author. Thanks!

It’s beautiful and terrifying, and worth the tears.

ok so for reference, this is the post we're talking about

the characters are as follows: maxwell q. klinger from m*a*s*h, spike from buffy: the vampire slayer, seto kaiba from yugioh, and castiel supernatural

the connection is this: none of these characters were supposed to last longer than a few episodes or chapters in their source material, but each of them ended up being main characters who made it all the way to the very end of their respective series & became overall fan favorites

klinger isn't original to the book or movie that m*a*s*h is based on, and he was intended to be one-off transphobic crossdressing joke. instead, he was so well-written and well-acted that he became a main character whose passion for women's fashion was respected and admired by all the other characters. unlike the later examples, the writers of the show voluntarily kept klinger on and really embraced the journey of writing him into a deep and sympathetic character. despite having been written for one single off color joke in one single episode, he starred in all eleven seasons and is one of the most beloved characters in the whole show

Seto Kaiba was originally written as a one-off bad guy of the week, a classmate of yugi's who has a passion for card games but no respect for other players. he was such a hit that takahashi just kept upgrading him to be a Bigger and Badder bad guy (he opens a theme park to murder the protagonists) until he eventually became So Popular that he was (sort of) redeemed and upgraded to antihero protagonist. the anime adaptation took this even farther by highlighting him and frequently shoehorning him into arcs he wasn't really present for in the manga. he is now the most popular character in the whole show, even more than any of the original protagonists

Spike was introduced in Season 2 of Buffy as a short-term bad guy meant to highlight Angel's status as the 'good vampire.' instead, he became wildly popular and was slowly upgraded to main character and endgame love interest. joss whedon, notably, hated the fact that spike was a fan favorite and continuously attempted (and failed) to sabotage spike's popularity with viewers. instead, he remains one of the most iconic figures of the series, even despite the attempted character assassination

castiel is the perfect evolution of each of the previous characters. he was originally signed for a handful of episodes in season 4 of supernatural, but his impact was so great (and his sexual tension w/ dean was so powerful) that he immediately shot to the top of all popularity polls. quite a few supernatural writers, like joss whedon, hated that the gay angel had taken over their show, and he was almost killed and written off the show multiple times, but the fan outcry was so loud that they kept caving and writing him back in. by the end of the show, he remained a main character after 11 seasons, and the writers made the funniest possible choice of 1) caving to fan desires and making him canonically gay and then 2) indulging their own utter hatred by killing him immediately afterward and spending the last episode of the show acting as if he had never existed.

each of these characters was meant to be a one-off character meant to either be a joke or a means to advance the plot. each of them was so unbelievably charismatic and charming that they became main characters due to their extreme popularity with fans. for klinger and kaiba, the creators embraced their wildcard protagonists and allowed them to blossom naturally into nuanced and interesting characters. for spike and castiel, the creators threw countless conniption fits but could not quash the public's fervor for an asshole vampire and a gay angel. i find comparing the four of them really interesting, as it shows the way that fan interaction can shape a narrative, and it gives us an insight into the way characters and stories can take on a life of their own and eventually result in one gay angel ruling the entire internet against the will of the people who created him

When Cas talks about explaining freedom to angels being like teaching poetry to fish. When earlier he was told don't step on that fish. Big plans for that fish. The fish of course couldn't possibly understand poetry, it's too busy climbing out of water and trying not to die in this new world. But what it will become, one of the many things it will eventually become, is a human. It will learn poetry eventually. But it'll take a lot of time and constant evolution to get there. Do you think Castiel was thinking about that fish when he said that.

doing penance, how very dean. had it comin for what now? trying to scroll through dean's latest fuckups but keeping track of his with sam and the world at large (and sam with him and the world) and castiel apparently is Too Much.

Excerpt 

The outfit’s all a little too big, though, a little too simple, like Cas is still figuring out things like how tall and how wide he is. Or maybe how to account for a body without extra flappers over his shoulders, and so he’s going for too few parts. Sure enough, when Dean looks down, Cas hasn’t got any shoes on his feet.

Castiel squints, all the way into offended again. He straightens, his shoulders pushing back even further, like he’s trying to stretch out his wings to show off how big and intimidating he is. Except he doesn’t have wings right now. Yep, definitely a little too fond of the missing flappy bits. “My true form—”

“Is pretty freakin’ bizarre,” Dean answers bluntly. “We don’t need that. Don’t do it, man.” He jabs a finger at the genie in their tiny apartmen. “In here, those wing-dings of yours would go right through the walls if you stretched ‘em out to show off how pretty you are. And then we’d all have the guard called on us for property destruction, and probably the other hunters called on you.”

Castiel goes still. The corners of his mouth droop. He glares at Dean. “I feel as if you’re not being sincere when you say I’m pretty.”

“Dean,” Sam scolds.

“Look, it’s true. He has skin like a crystal outta the witchy woman shop, and a lot of wings and eyes,” Dean says. It might be an asshole thing to say, but it is true. “Also, he was buck-ass naked and using his wings as a skirt. This is better, right?” He claps Castiel on the shoulder. “Still you, just, y’know. More normal.”

“I’m a genie. I don’t think you understand what ‘normal’ is,” the little asshole says. With air quotes.

But Sam’s latched on to his lore ideas again. “So… you have wings, normally? That’s amazing! I read in one book that genies were the size of giants, with blue skin, and smoke for legs!” he continues excitedly. “I mean… not that I’m saying you should be blue. Just…”

Cas considers that so seriously that Dean expects him to start rubbing his chin, like one of those scholars in paintings. “Perhaps that was normal in that society at the time?” he offers, finally. “Knees are a very inconvenient development in upright evolution. I’m not sure whose idea they were.”

Sam stares. “Is that, uh… is that a joke?” he finally asks.
