Having had the same socials accounts since I was a kid can be a trip sometimes. I scroll back a decade and I got tonnes of unsolicited homophobic comments on my posts from people who are now religiously pro-"qu*er" and messages from previous employers about how they found out I was gay via facebook so now I’m fired. Like, the amount of people and businesses that are one repost away from being exposed by my socials is palpable my friends💅

IS TORINO, GAY OR BI?? PAN?

If I���m writing Gran Torino, assume he’s either bisexual or asexual. Usually for the latter, I’ll add a note and/or tag but otherwise assume that he’s bi because he’s my blorbo and I get to project at least ONE thing. Sexual history depends on the fic; the spectrum will go from ‘never slept with anybody’ to ‘was the most prime piece of ass in the prefecture’.

And before I lock myself into anything, lemme add: my terminology will always be in flux. I’ll call Torino a disaster bisexual, or a gay mess, or an old queer. I haven’t done it yet, but somewhere in the creative cloud, there’s a Trans Torino.

damn imagine being jonathan sims. some woman shows up in like combat boots or whatever, and what the fuck you recognize her. that’s melanie king. she does that stupid ghost hunting show that everyone here makes fun of. and then she immediately starts insulting you and your workplace and the statements, when she literally came here to make a statement. but you recently promised your boss that you would “be more lovely,” so you’re trying So Hard not to lose your temper. you limit yourself to some light sass, and tbh think that’s pretty impressive on your part. she finally starts actually giving the statement, and not two minutes into it she mentions, off-hand, your ex-girlfriend, who you have not talked to in years. you have to pretend to be normal about this. then the youtube lady finishes, and you tell her you’ll look into it, but not to expect much, and she starts screaming at you again about how this whole place is bullshit and then she storms out and slams the door. you had told her before she started that you probably wouldn’t believe her. and now you just have this statement that you have to send your team to look into. what is the job of an archive again? are we sure it’s taking in new statements and doing research? you don’t know, you didn’t go to archive school, you’re flying by the seat of your pants. oh and also those evil worms from the evil worm lady are increasing in number outside your work. and all you want is an organized archive and maybe a nap.

out of spite at the people who think transhet men have straight male privilege, i was planning to look into violence against straight transmasculine people specifically. i was going to look through the aovatp and see what i can find about the victims' sexualities, but i wanted to first ask if you had any information on their seuxalities already from your research. no worries if not, i just figured i'd check.

100% support that. I think straight trans men especially see a lot of erasure from other queer people, who are quick to portray them as cis lesbian victims of lesbophobia.

Here are the victims on the Archive who I know would be relevant:

Khleo Finnie (USA) - Assaulted and slashed along with his wife while being called slurs

Maria Paola Gaglione (Italy) - A cis woman who was murdered by her brother to "teach her a lesson" after getting engaged to a trans man

Unnamed trans man (Qatar) - A member of the Qatar royal family fled and went into hiding with his girlfriend after his freedom was restricted by his family.

Phillip (Malawi) - Assaulted by police officers along with another trans man for "doing lesbian activities"

John (USA) - Murdered by the ex-husband of his girlfriend in the late 1986. "During the murder trial in 1990, the defense proposed the argument that it was not a “real murder,” as John was just an “it”." (Hung Jury chp. 9)

Nicole Saavedra Bahamondes (Chile) - A camiona (butch lesbian) who was murdered, and had been previously harassed by cis men who sought to "correct her" and "make her a woman." She lived in Valparaíso, a region known for its lesbophobic violence.

^ Unnamed camiona (Chile) - Whipped with chains while being called lesbophobic slurs. Also from Valparaíso.

^ Carolina Torres (Chile) - Brutally beaten and permanently disabled by cis men who specifically targeted her, and not her femme girlfriend, for being a camiona; during the attempted murder, they asked her "Why do you dress like a man?"

Kavi/Kaveri (India) - Murdered and had his body burned by two cisgender men because he was against one of them dating his friend.

Jorge (Ecuador) - Forced into conversion therapy where he was physically abused and made to wear sexy feminine clothing (his girlfriend was also subject to similar treatment).

Manoj (India) - 17-year-old who was tied up, beaten, locked in, and threatened with murder by his family after coming out as a straight trans man. He was also taken out of school and forced into marriage with a much older man.

However there definitely are other people on that list who might be of interest to you.

Notice how I never said the podcast is progressive for having a diverse, well-rounded, and fleshed out cast, nor that I hated all the women in the podcast. I love all of the main cast of characters, that love is just expressed differently based on how their individual journeys go.

What I DID draw attention to was how good Rusty Quill was at writing complex women who had their own motivations and reasoning that the audience would not agree with or relate to. I, personally, don’t understand Daisy’s draw to cruelty and stepping on people deemed “below” her. But I CAN understand that she was actively trying to change her whole outlook on life, and that it took guts to do. I don’t understand Georgie’s loyalties and how they appear to shift with no reason. But I can understand that she has complex feelings towards her ex and wants to keep her life and new girlfriend safe. I don’t understand why Basira gets so caught up on Jon’s morals when hers took a backseat when it came to Daisy abusing people, nor do I understand why she was so quick to jump on Jon for any perceived fault or wrongdoing. But I do understand that her one last connection to her old life was her partner, and that Daisy meant so much to her. I understand that Basira was only alive this long because she was a cautious, rational person, and that she trusted her instincts to guide her, and she saved most of the casts’ lives at least once.

I didn’t even touch on Melanie’s character as I think she gets it pretty rough from most of the fanbase, even though she was being possessed by the slaughter, had her career crash down around her, was signed on as basically a prisoner, and was thrown into this crazy world of Fears and Avatars with zero warning. She then was told of a way out, and she was the only one to have the willpower and stomach to blind herself to be free.

Sasha is a much beloved character who has way too little “screen time” and I wish the narrative had been able to keep her around. She was very smart, capable, and she was a steady force driving the Archives to do their jobs.

Gertrude was the peak Mentor character trope, badass and self-sufficient to a fault. She was allowed to grow old and still be a wonderfully violent character. She wanted results, at any cost.

This is already too long, but if you think that being frustrated at characters’ choices or arguing their logic means that I hate them, then I don’t think this is going to change your mind. But it was nice to reflect on the main women of The Magnus Archives and how they interact with the main story.

He often looks very tired and is physically unfit, as other characters refer to him as scrawny and he tires easily from physical tasks that others perform with little exertion. he also has lots of scars.

(propaganda, spoilers for The Magnus Archives) He's a wet cat and at one point dated Georgie Barker and does date Martin Blackwood. there is also a whole tag/movement for "hot Jon rights". he may not be like, 10/10 on the attractive scale but his far off gaze has captivated me

Mari Datuin (Hi Nay):

Short, curvy, adorable

Mari is Filipino, which means despite her warm exterior, she's got the deep, unrelenting trauma of a Pinay who left the Philippines during the Duterte era.

She loves milk tea and casually knows how to exorcise ghosts, she gets to sing in a musical episode, she's still close with her ex-girlfriend while pining over a clueless detective, there's at least two incredibly beautiful women she's ready to fist fight at a moment's notice, and there's something deeply wrong with her that isn't immediately apparent.

Also she loves her Nanay (mom) very much and calls her all the time.

If you believe she isn't 5 feet of incandescent rage in a cute and friendly package, then I absolutely recommend checking out Hi Nay to see where she goes 💖

(I think it's very important to note that Mari is 5 feet tall and all her friends are in the 6 foot range and that will never not be funny to me as a Filipina)
