“Are you sure this thing you’re about to do is the right thing?”
“I don’t have a fucking clue,” Holden said, and then he did it anyway.

Why should you watch 'The Expanse'? This scene alone:
So my raggedy ass wrote a novel length longfic with Star Wars and The Expanse, in a somewhat pithy attempt to get some folks interested in this amazing show. I even threw in some quick one-shot pieces too. *
But you know what? This battle scene, from one of the first episodes, should sell you on the show itself rather then my story of Ryan-from-Accounting banging Camina Drummer's giggly nerd cousin and the shenanigans that followed.
Strap in, mi beratnas, it's gonna get wild.
Donnager Battle (youtube.com)
The Martian ship, The Donnager, is sleek, futuristic, and its crew is in neat uniforms. But their cadence is calm, easy, even as torpedoes are firing at them. It's like they're going for a grocery run to Trader Joe's, they know what they're doing.
We get to see all different parts of the massive ship, from the brig to the bridge, to say nothing of the crisp graphics and efficient weapons systems. The Martian Navy knows WTF it's doing in a way that is grounded and believable.
How CALM Captain Yao is! Strolling around with her coffee and checking in on her crew as they're firing off missiles and bullets. It's a Tuesday for her. Love seeing this.
The different lightening and the reactions of the captured Canturbury crew let us immediately know they're form different places, with former Martian pilot Alex Kamal knowing EXACTLY what's going on when he hears missiles firing.
THE SUBDUED SOUNDS IN SPACE.
Quick shot of the magboots, keeping the crew member on their feet even as they're in battle.
Effective use of storytelling with an effective use of accurate engineering. We know shit's hitting the ceiling because power is being diverted, and suddenly, gravity is lost, and everyone is starting to float.
The Donnager is a major Martian warship...but that doesn't mean the hulls are impenetrable. Flying debris can take someone out in seconds, seen at 4:45.
SEATBELTS SAVING THE DAY BECAUSE PHYSICS.
Jim Holden has the excuse to grab that gun and escape...but he goes for the downed Martian marine instead to check on him and help out. Confirmed, homeboy was going to be the Himbo Hero of this show.
Trust me, folks...it gets even better after this!

Babylon’s Gate spoilers
Im loving how much Holden is uncomfortable with Clarissa being on the ship. The series to me gives beautiful insight into atonement and the human rights about punishment of death vs prison. Amos doesn’t have a morality in the way that others do, notably lacks empathy due to whatever reason (imma do a post about that later). So for Amos forgiveness isn’t required. If someone steps out of line and becomes a threat then they are handled. He bonded with Clarissa and feels the need to protect/care in the way one would for another comrade.
Alex is iffy but trusts the people he’s with enough that if a situation arises he knows they’ll be able to handle it. But he’s also social conflict avoidant, his tactic is to placate and avoid issues, often using humour and accent to diffuse. As Naomi points out, he isn’t comfortable with Clarissa, but when the decision was made to not kill her he chose to stand by Naomi’s decision and now if Naomi is okay with it then he will try to be too.
Naomi has the obvious reason of being okay with it. She can see Clarissa has changed, knows that her own son has done so so much worse and feels the guilt of the things she did even when they weren’t an active choice. I don’t think she forgave Clarissa, but she did see the importance in giving Clarissa a chance to change/heal/atone. For her it’s more than just Clarissa’s own change, but hope for herself and her son.
But Holden. Ah Holden beloved, ever the angry and uncomfortable on everyone’s behalf. It kind of reminds me of an ally for LGBTQIA+ or disability things being upset on my behalf. Such an ally is uncomfortable because for them the morality is much more rigid than my own, there’s the urge to be hateful and aggressive to those that might just be ignorant or with some effort could actually change. Bringing this back to prison vs. death punishment, Holden leans towards death when someone has done things that are on the negative extreme of his morals. His threshold for ‘someone can change’ is much lower and it’s also biased as fuck. If he knows the person and feels like he actually knows the person, has that connection, then that threshold gets higher.
Of course from the readers perspective we can see how Clarissa has changed. We see her interactions with Amos and see how much she knows she did awful shit. She knows she’s the walking equivalent to a wolf in sheep’s skin, constantly underestimated and then feared when people recognise her.
The diversity of morality on the Rosci is beautiful. I’m so excited to see how Bobbie fits into it all for this book (the Rosci!!! Gets an actual gunner!! Fuck that was so cool when she got to be in the gunners chair. Story wise I see why she isn’t kept because it’s a god mod that would need to be constantly knee-capped else risk readers being like ‘well then why didn’t they just do this cause they have Bobbie’)

Sometimes I lie awake at night thinking about Amos' quote in 2x06- "The way I see it, there's only three kinds of people in this world, bad ones, the ones you follow, and ones you need to protect." And how, at some point in time, Clarissa fits into every single one of those categories for him, and that is one of the reasons I enjoy their storyline together so much.

I have a thought about Filip and Naomi from The Expanse, but involves such a HUGE spoiler I'm gonna hide it under a cut. Don't open unless you've finished the books AND the short stories (or if you're just generally spoiler-agnostic)
GOOD ON THE WRITERS for never reuniting Filip and Naomi! It's painful and unsatisfying, but it works so well-- it underscores everything that Naomi says about how the universe never lets you know whether you did the right thing, you never get to know if your efforts led to positive change or not, you never get to know how your words affected someone else. You just have to do your best and live with the not knowing. It hurts to know that Naomi lived the rest of her life assuming that her son was dead (and that she was instrumental in his death), when we, the readers, know that she did save him! That her memory guided him through the rest of his life!!
And given the end of Leviathan Falls, that theme has even more resonance--humanity has been fractured, spread out across space and time. The hundreds of pockets of human civilization that have been divided from one another likely won't reunite for generations, if ever. You don't get to know if they remember you. You don't get to know if they're doing okay. You just have to do your best, say your goodbyes, and accept that their stories will continue--and that you will never read them.
also oh my gawwwd putting Filip and Nami on the same planet, but neither of them knows the history/family of the other, is SUCH a good storytelling choice! The Sins of Our Fathers is a perfect capstone on a series whose greatest strength, IMO, is putting lots of nuanced, fully-realized characters with intractable differences of opinion in the same room and making them solve problems together.

Rewatching The Expanse, and damn, Chad Coleman really makes you feel the sadness in the line “You were meant to go to a new sun,” during the Nauvoo launch.

"Some of that light had been traveling for centuries. Millennia. Longer. Many of those stars would have died long before she was born. What a weird fate for a photon to be spat out of a nuclear fireball, speed through the vast emptiness between stars, and land on a Martian Marine's retina while she decided whether she still feared death, or if she was ready. She'd done this a dozen times before."

So I'm on season 5 of The Expanse now and it may be one of my favourite shows of all time tbh. I will say I am missing the Roci crew being together but the overall story is interesting and I'm looking forward to the last two episodes of the season immensely. Like, I'm brimming with anticipation.
508 was crazy though. Firstly, Naomi is a goddamn badass. I had no idea what she was doing for half the episode, but when they played the spliced message on Drummer's ship I was gobsmacked. Holy shit. I hope Drummer finds out soon and kicks off Marcos' person on the ship she's so smarmy and annoying.
Secondly, I love Drummer but her entire crew are not 'family' and I don't like them. I want her to join the Roci crew pls.
Filip needs to leave Marcos and Marcos needs to die, ugh he's such an abusive arsehole I can't stand him.
I hope Earth does not retaliate by blowing up Palis/Palace station whatever it's called. I do not think that'll go down well; hopefully new dude will listen to Avasarala.
Peaches and Amos need to get to the Roci too. In fact, every damn character I like needs to be on the Roci in the final episode headed to one of them cowboy bars that Alex was on about. Thank you.
I'm gonna have to read these books, I'm hooked on this lol
