💡Lightbulb Moment💡
I've seen too many people make this mistake and I want to clear it up for those who do really care about it;
The Fillyjonk Who Believed in Disasters, the Fillyjonk in Moominvalley in November and Mrs. Fillyjonk from the comics and 90s adaptation are 3 different characters.
The one overarching trait for each of them is their need for order and cleanliness, though that trait is a little tenuous when it comes to FWBD, I suppose their need to impress is a good alternative shared trait, or rather a second trait.
The Fillyjonk Who Believed in Disasters is from Tales from Moominvalley, she bought a beach house which a hemulen claimed to have belonged to her grandma and has an inexplicable anxiety about something bad about to happen. She tries to make friends with Gaffsie but has no luck, her beach house feels isolating and unwelcoming of her very presence. Then, after the disaster she so dreaded happens, she laughs off the hurricane's destruction of her house and feels better because of it. She became free of her supposed duty to her family connections, free of the dreary and oppressive house.
Fillyjonk (who doesn't have an article in her name for some reason) from Moominvalley in November lived in a mansion where she had chased away her friends and family to focus on cleaning, and just cleaning. After a traumatic near-death experience and realizing nobody would've noticed if she had died, she sets out to visit Moominmamma to ease her worries, only to find strangers have inhabited Moominhouse in the Moomins' absence. She swore to herself to never cook or clean again because of the traumatic experience and has become deathly afraid of insects and bacteria and creepy-crawlies. As time went by at Moominhouse she finally became comfortable with herself again and started enjoying cooking and cleaning again, and she even picked up a new interest in music by the end of her presence in the book.
Mrs. Fillyjonk originated from the comics, she's a 'housewife' (with no husband to be found) and has 3 children and a maid (Mabel, Misabel's sister) working under her. She's the Karen Fillyjonk, she's the one who looks for assistance from the Inspector the most, she's the one who pressures Moominmamma to be a proper woman, she's part of a woman's committee. Mrs. Fillyjonk doesn't have an obvious deep anxiety like the other two, she's comfortable in her routine and home life, she loves cleaning, her children are obedient and even look to help her (though the 90s series does characterize them as tired of their mother's strictness). She has a cow named Rose.
None of these characters have any references to each other, the Fillyjonk, Fillyjonk and Mrs. Fillyjonk are all different characters, much like how the dozen hemulens and hemuls are different.
(bonus: I didn't mention 2019 Mrs. Fillyjonk because she feels like an entirely different character on her own, the children are her nieces, her anxiety is humorous instead of suspenseful or sympathetic, Sniff's stuffed dog was her childhood toy now; she's a different character unique to Moominvalley, even if I don't like her as an adaptation of the other three, even if she has moments referencing them.)

💡Lightbulb Moment💡
I feel like Gutsy should've made November in Moominvalley a two-parter if they really wanted to adapt it while still upholding their claim of making the show "closer to Tove's vision" (which at this point feels rather untrue with how they're handling the series as an adaptation of the Moomin books and comics)
It feels way too short and simple to be an adaptation of Moominvalley in November, I'm not opposed to having to replace the characters such as Grandpa-Grumble with Muskrat or Mymble with Mymblemamma but I feel as though everyone got along far too well and felt too comfortable with the empty house and eachother. Much of what made MVinN so enjoyable, in my opinion, was that it felt like a bunch of random people with their own faults and desires got together out of coincidence and tried to make sense of the situation with their mostly common goal being wanting the Moomins back, there was a lot of arguing and not understanding eachother all that well and it made them feel like real people.
In November in Moominvalley there was about half an argument in the middle before being interrupted by Toffle having their nummulite vision thing and that was that. The characters were very kind and mostly in sync, and it's... Boring. It doesn't have that satisfaction that the book had despite both of their cliffhanger endings. When Toffle says to Snufkin in bed that the house feels empty despite not being empty it doesn't have that same relatability or context as it did when it came from the Fillyjonk thinking to herself, huddled in a cold humid guest room all by herself. The Hemulen repeating himself that "they (the group) are not the Moomins" in the episode doesn't have the same sense as when he repeated himself because Toft didn't respond or the Fillyjonk was being irrationally warry of bugs in dead leaves while he insisted on raking them to make the house look nice for when Moominpappa comes back.
Moominvalley in November feels like such an important book that doubled as a send-off to Tove's grip on the franchise's stories, and the episode very much fell flat on living up to it. I realize very clearly that the show is aimed at a much younger audience than most other Moomin media but seeing as Gutsy's adaptation is the only adaptation of the book, it feels wrong to portray it so simply and without proper conflict buildup, especially with how initially ambitious they were trying to be with the show.
I would suggest that the two-parter version of this would have the first part be focused on the conflict and slow building of trust between the characters and then have the more feel-good stuff left for the second part, that way there'd be more time with characters and showcasing how they could interact with eachother, aswell as focus on each character individually. It would be respectful of the source material while still fitting with the characters they have seeing as they can't make new ones besides Toffle.
I can't ask for the Hemulen to be really interested in boats or try to go out sailing for the first time, there wouldn't be enough time and such a design for the Hemulen in the purple dress and cap, he doesn't fit well with the original counterpart, but he could've still tried to build a small treehouse for Moominpappa and act like an out-of-touch uncle with Toffle.
I can't ask for the Muskrat to have dementia and befriend his own mirror reflection which he thinks is the ancestor, but he could've still befriended the actual ancestor and had him ramble his philosophy to it, developing a one-sided sort of bond and starting to care for the Moomin creature deeply.
There was so much they could've done with these replacement characters and much of it was left in the cutting room because they didn't have the time or budget or ideas for it, which is rather disappointing.

hi sorry in advance if this is weird but i couldn't for the life of me figure out who machete was reminding me of and just now i figured it out - surku the dog from the moomins. can't remember enough to tell how accurate that is personality wise but something about the image of a distressed pointy-nosed dog shivering in a coat... plus ne on molemmat ahdistuneita queer ikoneita
I love Surku! Surku must be protected at all costs.

If you ask me, he's even more distressed in the comics.

I keep him on my fridge door as well.

But now that we're on the topic of Moomin characters, I must add that I see Machete in various Fillyjonks a lot. The short story Fillyjonk who believed in disasters is one of my favorite pieces of literature ever, when I first read it it shook me to my core, I still revisit it on yearly basis. For someone who seemed so wild and free spirited by nature, Tove Jansson did remarkable job at catching and depicting the essence of anxiety, uncertainty, vague sadness and irrational fears. At least in my opinion.
