February 2023 Book Club Picks

Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen: Marianne Dashwood wears her heart on her sleeve, fascinated with thoughts of romance and passion. Her older sister Elinor, conversely, is practical and sensible, always having to keep her flighty younger sister out of trouble. But when both sisters are faced with romantic calamities that threaten their futures and their hearts, they that a combination of sense and sensibility are what’s needed to survive life’s many trials.
Unmask Alice: LSD, Satanic Panic, and the Imposter Behind the World’s Most Notorious Diaries by Rick Emerson: In 1971, Go Ask Alice hit shelves, and revolutionized young adult literature, opening America’s eyes to the horrors of drug addiction, mental illness, and teen prostitution. In 1979, Jay’s Journal was published, detailing a young man spiraling into the violent world of Satanic worship, and is often credited with igniting the Satanic Panic of the 1980s. Both books purported to be true diaries from real young people. In reality, they were both written by the same person: aspiring writer and fame-hungry con woman Beatrice Sparks, who twisted what facts she had and made up the rest, relying on halfhearted reporting, public outrage, and parents’ inherent fear of children they don’t understand to turn her into one of the most infamous “anonymouses” that’s ever existed.
The Fire This Time by Jesmyn Ward: “You know and I know, that the country is celebrating one hundred years of freedom one hundred years too soon.” These words positively singe in James Baldwin’s letter to his fifteen-year-old nephew in what would become his 1963 essay “The Fire This Time”. And Jesmyn Ward felt them when another year came, bringing with it a slew of black lives ended by police violence and racist rhetoric. Gathering the premiere writers, poets, and thinkers of the modern age, Ward puts together a collection of thoughts and essays to refute the truth that we are living in a “post-racial” society.
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald: Nick Carroway is a new face in the swinging Jazz Age New York scene, full of beautiful people throwing money around and living like they’ll die tomorrow. And among the beautiful elite is the crown jewel of the city, Nick’s neighbor Jay Gatsby, known for his lavish parties and enigmatic past. Everyone has a guess about who Gatsby is and where he (and his money) came from, but Nick finds himself slowly being drawn into Gatsby’s inner circle to learn the truth. Unfortunately, learning that truth comes with a whole host of personal problems Gatsby has been harboring for decades, which all culminates explosively and painfully.
Exit, Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles by Mark Russell: The time is 1953. The United States is locked in a Cold War with the Soviet Union, and the government is scrambling to flush out any subversives that may compromise the nation to the encroaching Communist threat. Among those under suspicion is famed Southern playwright Snagglepuss, the toast of Broadway who’s harboring a secret or two of his own. When he becomes the target of the House Committee of Un-American Activities, no one in Snagglepuss’ life is safe.

Work: working on something for a Very Cool Museum I can’t talk about
Finished reading This is Just My Face: Try Not To Stare by Gabourey Sidibe
Finished reading The Fire This Time by Jesmyn Ward
Unfurled a giant tarp on my driveway because mulch was being delivered this morning
Saw a small snek and a lizard with no tail. Both very cute but too speedy to get pics
The mulch never turned up
Mulch was apparently actually scheduled for next Friday, despite us agreeing to and being told it was today
Rescheduled mulch for June 8 because next Friday does not work
Put tarp away again
Changed this blog’s icon; Squirrel Girl FTW
Picked up the Terrible Van from the shop, it had a bad wheel bearing and needed it’s AC recharged, cost about $800 >:(
Returned my mom’s jeep that we had been borrowing while the van was in the shop
Stopped at a Kentaco on the way home
Watched an episode of Company Man on youtube
Duolingo Korean
Went to the grocery store
Went to the Burger King drive thru and saw this dude who clearly did not know how drive thrus work (pic below)

seteth told him to only file an incident report for hubert if he STOPS sending death threats. he sends one each week to all the faculty in an exquisite, wax-sealed envelope and the rest usually happen during brawling tutoring.

Ranking Books I Read In 2022: 20-16
20. The Daughters of Mannerling series - Marion Chesney
Tumblr media
What I Liked: A fun cast of characters. Lots of notable bachelors. Tons of madcap fun I’ve come to expect from this series. What I Didn’t Like: I really wish Mannerling had burned down, not just because I hate the idea of it still having its claws in the family, but because it would have just worked thematically. Lady Beverly would have either died or learned to move on, and that would have been a much more satisfying ending. Final thoughts: A fun, cute series that has a pretty good dose of nonsense under its belt.
19. The Princess Bride - William Goldman
Tumblr media
What I Liked: A funny, fun, rollicking adventure. Fezzik and Inigo’s relationship is, if possible, even more adorable. The framing device of a fictionalized Goldman trying to rewrite a doorstopper for his child to enjoy is incredibly clever. What I Didn’t Like: Some parts got positively Tolkien-esque and it made my eyes glaze over. Buttercup is pretty bland. I dunno, something about actually seeing Wright and Elwes interact and have that wonderful chemistry made the movie so much better in regards to the romance. Final thoughts: A delightful thing whether you’ve seen the movie or not, even though I do prefer the movie.
18. Parable of the Sower - Octavia E. Butler
Tumblr media
What I Liked: Absolutely visceral and painful, but in a way that compels you. Lauren is an amazing protagonist and I love reading about her badassery. What I Didn’t Like: Takes a while to get off the ground. Don’t really care for the uncomfortable relationship with Bankole, who is explicitly stated to be old enough to be Lauren’s father. Final thoughts: Despite the slow start, this is a timeless piece of writing that makes me sad Butler stopped after only two books. TW rape.
17. The Bad Guys series - Aaron Blabey
Tumblr media
What I Liked: Genuinely made laugh a lot. Surprisingly moving and sweet. What I Didn’t Like: It’s a book for kids so I feel like I can’t judge the plots too harshly. Maybe a few jokes that didn’t land. Final thoughts: A great book series to just turn your brain off, accept whatever comes, and have fun. Really looking forward to the ending.
16. The Fire This Time - Jesmyn Ward
Tumblr media
What I Liked: So many great essays, which were almost all full of gorgeous prose and gut-wrenching feeling. The essay about walking in America while black especially got me. What I Didn’t Like: One or two of the essays fell a little flat. Final thoughts: A great read, but bring a tissue. TW discussions of racism.

i’d rather have rainbow capitalism then living in constant fear of discovery. the woman in the pride flag disney t-shirt might be missing the nuance, but at least i know i can be myself. a street full of rainbow flags makes me more comfortable holding a mans hand. look. corporations aren’t your friend. they will sell to whoever will buy. but kids seeing gay everything every year is only ever a good thing, and a massive improvement in history

Good time for a periodic reminder that "butch" does not mean "has muscles" and it does not mean "sidebuzz haircut" and if you look at a cartoon girl who wears makeup and skirts and high heels and decide she's butch purely on the virtue of "she's kind of buff" or "she's got short hair" or "she's rude to men" or "she knows how to fight" then you need to delete futchscale.png off your hard drive and talk to an actual butch for once in your life
EDIT: This post is somehow still dominating my activity feed after two months so I feel like I should add a couple of disclaimers:
No, I don't hate She-Ra. I like it quite a bit, in fact. I don't know why some people seem to think being annoyed by the fandom response to a character means I hate the show...?
Also, this post isn't really "about" Scorpia. She just came to mind first when I wrote the tag
(imagine I'm standing up on a big box with a megaphone for this one) THIS POST WAS MADE BY A GLEEFUL TRANSSEXUAL AND IF YOU HAVE AN ISSUE WITH THAT THEN MY WORDS ARE NOT FOR YOU. TRANS-EXCLUSIONARY FEMINISM IS A BOLD-FACED LIE AND SERVES ONLY TO REDIRECT SUFFERING AWAY FROM YOURSELF AND TOWARD THE LESS-PRIVILEGED. COWARD

i genuinely don't care how good a piece of ai generated art or writing looks on the surface. i don't care if it emulates brush strokes and metaphor in a way indistinguishable from those created by a person.
it is not the product of thoughtful creation. it offers no insights into the creator's life or viewpoint. it has no connection to a moment in time or a place or an attitude. it has no perspective. it has no value.
it's empty, it's hollow, and it exists only to generate clicks (and by extension, ad revenue.)
it's just another revolting symptom of the disease that is late stage capitalism, and it fucking sucks.
