Today is the 65th Birthday of Motown… this legendary record label was founded on January 12th, 1959 by Berry Gordy, with an $800 loan from his family.
If I have to pick only one of the pile of monster hits from this record label, mine would be “Baby Need Your Loving” by the Four Tops…
The first record Motown put out was “Come To Me” by Marv Johnson, written by Johnson with Gordy.
It did fairly well, but Motown’s first million-selling hit would come a bit later with “Shop Around” by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, followed by “Please Mister Postman” by the Marvellettes…
And then, one after another, hit after hit began to roll out of Motown…
There’s never been another phenomenon of a record label quite like it…
But, which is the best ever Motown song?
What is your favorite?? Weigh in…
Here are some worthy nominees….
My Girl by the Temptations
It’s a Shame by The Spinners
Money by Barrett Strong
What Becomes of the Brokenhearted by Jimmy Ruffin
You Can’t hurry Love by the Supremes
Dancing in the Street by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas
Ain’t No Mountain high Enough by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell
Reach Out I’ll Be There - The Four Tops
Signed Sealed and Delivered by Stevie Wonder
I Want You Back by the Jackson Five
You Really Got A Hold On Me by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles..
Steady as we go... I'll admit that after close examination of the lyrics for Terminal Jive I needed to look up who Art Laboe was. A pioneer of the Oldies But Goodies format, he also partnered with frequent Sparks sparring partner Dick Clark on a massive Rock N' Roll showcase at the Hollywood Bowl in 1960 that I have a sneaking suspicion two mini-Maels and their mom may have attended.
Anyway, this is the fictional bill that the narrator of The Greatest Show On Earth lays out as being less preferable to staying up in his apartment with his gal.
