CW for child abuse, claustrophobia, panic attacks

Headcanon that when Aaron was small, Tilda would sometimes lock him in closets when she didn't want to deal with him, sometimes for a few hours but other times for entire days, and Aaron develops claustrophobia as a result.

So when Andrew locks him in the bathroom to get him clean, it triggers a panic attack so severe that Aaron passes out.

But Andrew won't let him out until he's clean, so Aaron is forced to suffer through both his withdrawal and his terror.

In the end, it's not the fear of another withdrawal that bad that keeps him clean. It's the deeply ingrained fear that Andrew will lock him in the bathroom again.

Andrew has no idea about Aaron's phobia. At the time, he just thought Aaron's panicked cries were the pleas of a desperate addict. He doesn't find out the truth until year three into their joint therapy sessions.

When Andrew does finally learn the truth, he actually apologizes. Not for getting Aaron clean, but for the way he did it. For not believing Aaron when he yelled and cried about how scared he was.

Andrew doesn't believe in regret, but he never meant to hurt his brother.

1am aftg hc: Kevin finds out that there's an Exy anime(I mean- if exy was real there would sure af be an anime about it!) So he decides to watch it, to you know like, take notes from the games and stuff, and well, it's exy. And he makes Neil watch it with him because as said before, it's exy.

At first Neil is like "why are we watching cartoons/ a kids show?" But Kevin explains that a) that's not how anime works* b)we are watching it because they're playing exy Neil.

(* not bc he's an anime fan, but I hope that bc he's half Japanese or something he has a little respect for anime ok?)

So yeah Kevin and Neil watch an exy anime together

And as I said to another post Kevin can watch anime without subtitles on, so when they watch and have subtitles on bc Neil can't speak Japanese, Kevin is like "omg they didn't translate that right 🤦‍♂️" "lmao he just made a pun... too bad you can't understand it though" "omg the translation is so bad... Neil you're like missing out half the point of the anime they translated it as 'I like playing exy' but the word he used stands for 'I would sell my mother to the black market to be with the love of my life: exy' too bad you can't understand it tho"

(Next time they watch it Neil finds the German dub to fuck with kevin)

(After fights they end up watching it in French but their French is dusty so they watch it in French with English subtitles on)

One night, Aaron FaceTimes Andrew, and he is sobbing, but before Andrew can ask what’s wrong or even panic, Aaron flips the screen to show the twins and asks them who is who. They say their names, and then Aaron says no, and they just giggle and tell him not to be silly; they know their names, and Aaron’s like, clearly not, and then asks again, and they switch names. Aaron flips the camera back around, telling Andrew they’ve been doing it for hours, and he can’t tell them apart anymore. When Andrew asks where Katelyn is because she has never once mixed the twins up in their three years of life, Aaron flips the screen again, and Katelyn is laughing so hard on the other side of the couch that she's not even making noise anymore. Neil literally almost pees his pants because he’s laughing so hard, as well, and Andrew, after telling Aaron who’s who because Andrew has even the most minuscule difference memorized, he tells the twins to keep up the good work and then hangs up.

I know Neil and Andrew don't always rely on words, but I do think they eventually get into the habit of verbally apologizing. I think they both have some difficulty getting there (especially Andrew), but I imagine it would come to mean a lot to hear someone they love admit fault and make amends for it. Still, it's never as simple as an "I'm sorry." Their apologies almost always turn into good conversations, promises to work on things. They care enough about each other to do that.

Neil & Thunderstorms

When Neil was 10, he and Mary stayed in an abandoned farmhouse for a few weeks. One night, Mary went to go pick up their new IDs just as a massive thunderstorm started. For hours, Neil was stuck alone in a pitch black house while the walls shook with every boom of thunder.

Neil had already been through so many terrifying things in his short life, a thunderstorm should have been nothing in comparison. And yet, he still flinches hard enough for Andrew to notice when lightning cracks across the sky

Neil never says anything, of course. Doesn't even acknowledge his own fear. It's silly, in the face of everything his been through, to have an irrational fear of storms.

But Andrew eventually notices, because of course he does. He never says anything about it either, but he makes sure that Neil is never alone when the weather reports are calling for a storm.

Even when they're playing on separate teams, Andrew keeps an eye on the weather in Neil's area, and when it calls for a storm, he calls Neil to distract him from his fear. He'd never admit that's what he's doing, of course, but Neil figures it out eventually anyway.

Head cannon time: Neil is smart.

I know what you're thinking, Neil is a math major, he's a polyglot, of course he's smart. But that's not what I'm talking about.

I'm saying that Neil is smart.

There is a reason why Mary had to force to do average at school and not draw attention to himself, because that kid was bringing home straight A's and getting awards for damn near everything. Something he was very proud of because it was the only time both of his parents would be nice to him. They might even give him a treat.

Mary forces him to become paranoid to the extent of making average grades to go unnoticed, but do you know how hard it is to make a certain grade? You have to know every answer on the test to calculate how much you can get right to hit that perfect C.

I think Neil sat there through every lesson and test running calculations in his head about how many mistakes he needed to make to go under the radar. To never win an award. To never get asked to join any clubs. Because he KNOWS that Nathan and his people are scouring any news about up and coming kids.

They're looking at all the finalist in the state and nationals spelling bee's. The decathlons. The sporting teams. Just waiting for Nathaniel to grow egotistical enough to get the spotlight again.

But Mary doesn't celebrate his achievements anymore. At best he'll get a pat on the back if his report card is filled with the most mundane, 'I have no clue who this kid is' language from his teachers.

And Neil is desperate for that crumb of affection.

So he only goes back to Exy after she dies, and he plays down his talents until Kevin comes along. And when Andrew calls him out for knowing more than he lets on... Well, Neil is a real boy now, He doesn't need to hide anymore.
