The Friend Zone Book Review
Tumblr media
Kristen Petersen doesn't do drama, will fight to the death for her friends, and has no room in her life for guys who just don't get her. She's also keeping a big secret: facing a medically necessary procedure that will make it impossible for her to have children. Planning her best friend's wedding is bittersweet for Kristen -- especially when she meets the best man, Josh Copeland. The only catch: Josh wants a big family someday. Kristen knows he'd be better off with someone else, but as their attraction grows, it's harder and harder to keep him at arm's length.
Rating: ★★★
The Friend Zone is an easy enough story to get through, although I cannot say it was particularly engaging. There were of course moments I enjoyed more than others, and I do feel like the main characters came across as having chemistry. Lack of chemistry is a complaint I often find myself having with these kinds of books, so at least that was a plus. However, I cannot say that I especially liked either of the main characters, and Kristen in particular had very much of a ‘cool girl’ and ‘I’m not like other girls’ vibe. This came not just from her perspective, but Josh’s also, and it was irritating.
I can appreciate the struggles that she was going through, including the medical diagnoses, made certain aspects of her life difficult. But I must admit that I found it hard to sympathise with certain aspects of this due to the way she let it too often colour her relationships and impact on other people, without actually informing them of the issues which I felt would be relevant to their relationship.
I think my main problem with the narrative is that it felt very much the same – it dragged on by focusing on the same thing over and over again, until the main traumatic moment later in the novel. I also felt that some of the sex scenes were incredibly weird and uncomfortable to read, but maybe that’s just me.
I initially had issues with the magical pregnancy because I felt it defeated the purpose of the infertility issues and the struggles Kristen and Josh went through in order to be on the same page, only for a solution to arise from nowhere. However, on reading the author’s note, it became clear that Kristen’s medical journey closely mirrored what a friend of the author went through, so that was completely understandable. It was grating at first precisely because these kinds of story conclusions are rampant in both written and visual media, without consideration for character development.
Similarly, I disliked how the main traumatic event appeared to be constructed to create drama for the main characters, and further relationship issues between them. Again, this is another common lazy writing technique, however, I have since learned that the second novel in the series, in which this secondary character was already deceased, was written first. So I cannot accuse the author of that either.
Apologies to Jimenez for my original reactions to her content, it’s unfortunate that by coincidence her main plot points happen to mirror very common (and in my opinion, lazy) writing. That’s why we cannot simply discount a narrative because it doesn’t exactly fit into our own worldview – there are plenty of stories to tell, and even ones that we may not like may actually be reflective of reality for some people, and it’s not ok to discard their truth.
That being said, either way I felt that The Friend Zone was a bit too bland for me, and aside from my initial issues with some of the main plot points, I just didn’t really like the main characters. I might read the second novel though, because I am interested to see how Sloan’s story turns out after everything.
Warnings: sexual harassment, sexism & misogyny, sex scenes, infertility, drunk driving, car accident, strokes, character death, emotional cheating

How misandry hurts women, in two acts. (Two separate posts on the same thread in TwoXChromosomes on Reddit)
So basically this is about a bunch of women talking about how older men dating younger women is evil and creepy and what not.
One woman says old men can fuck off because they're all misogynists. Another woman says it sucks that elderly women have to be alone.
Welp, ladies, we're all misogynists when we get old, right? So you're better off without us evil misogynist monsters. You're old, alone, be happy.
.... or did your hatred for men come back to bite you in the ass?

[2023] TOP 20 PODCASTS ON AO3 FOUND IN FANDOMS > OTHER MEDIA
To make this ranking, all series titles in Other Media were copy-pasted to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then manually filtered since not all podcasts were marked as such.
The numbers under each rank indicate how much they rose/fell in the rankings based on last year's (Oct. 24, 2023) rankings, which can be found here. The gray numbers in parenthesis indicate how much fanworks it gained since last year.
The data for this year and last year's rankings were taken while logged in, so lcoked fanworks are included in the count.
A few web series like Critical Role and Dimensions 20 released audio-only versions of their works too, but I left them out since they were listed was a web series on ao3 and more known as one too.
Cabin Pressure has also been left off the list this time since its podcast format was only released in 2019, years after it aired on the radio.
All nonfiction podcasts have also been excluded (Not that there were many), because with RPFs, it’s hard to tell if the fic in question is just based on the podcast or because of the things the person has done outside of it. Last year, I accidentally included The Misfits in the list since I didn't realize from its description that it was nonfiction.
The Two Princes (Podcast) ranks 21st in the rankings this year, and actually ranked 20th last year when the rankings are adjusted to exclude Cabin Pressure and The Misfits.
The College Tapes is actually a spinoff of The Bright Sessions.
Thanks for understanding and hopefully I didn’t mess up anywhere! 🙏

The Friend Zone - Abby Jimenez
My Thoughts
This book was very hit or miss for me – I really loved some parts, and others really annoyed me. Either way, it was a relatively fun romance. At first.
I did relate to Kristen when it came to her struggles with her menstruation cycle, and what that means for her wellness, and her future. I’ve struggled with this since I started menstruating, and no doctor has been willing to listen to my concerns. It’s hugely frustrating, especially when my wellness and my autonomy is being disregarded.
(I’m not going to go into how bullshit the medical system is for people who have a uterus – that’s a discussion fit for another forum, and I’m honestly too emotionally exhausted to get into it.)
Very often, women (like me) are left unable to advocate for themselves when it comes to their own healthcare needs. Kristen doesn’t face this, necessarily, but she does face hefty decisions and choices as a result of having the privilege of advocating for herself. It’s not an easy choice to make, but in the end, her wellness and quality of life matter more. And that’s not an easy decision to come to.
That being said, something that annoyed me about Kristen was that she wielded this decision like a weapon. She used it against anyone and everyone she could, especially Josh. And that greatly annoyed me.
I loved the banter between Josh and Kristen. I loved that they established a foundation of friendship before anything else. However, I lost immediate interest when Kristen hid her troubles from Josh, and then used the information he didn’t know against him to cause a lot of drama and pain for everyone involved – not just themselves, but their friends and family as well.
Even in the face of great tragedy, Kristen persists in choosing the most dramatic path, causing more pain in the long run. The more this persisted, the more I just wanted to book to end so that I could move on with my reading life.
While this was a fun and flirty romance in the beginning, the more I got into it, the more I realized that this book – this series, I suppose – just isn’t for me. When miscommunication is used as a plot device for pain and drama, I’m out. Maybe after some time has passed, and I’ve forgotten how annoyed I was by this book in the end, I’ll come back to this series. But I don’t see that happening for a very long time.

"Fright" Knight
So! You know how in some parts of this Phantom, people call Danny's Ghostly family his Fright?
Well what if that is the official term for Ghost Families/Ghost Groups in the Realms? And if so, that has some implications for Fright Knight
Fright Knight is a Spirit of Familial and Interpersonal Protection, the representation of the Guardianship of Families, Friends, and Homes
Or
Fright Knight was a Knight in his life who died protecting his Family and Friends. When he formed, he kept fighting to protect other Families and Friends.
The Halloween thing was just a fun little Hobby for him.

Recluse Owner, Bookshelf Gremlin, and the Cute Cafe Guy
A new bookstore/cafe opens, almost overnight, in Gotham.
They say it can find very rare books, heck maybe even books lost to time, unfinished manuscripts, rare writings from famous writers, etc etc.
As long as you respect the books within you won't have a problem with the recluse and introvert owner GW.
As for the cafe side, you can always count on friendly Danny to help you out, either it be an order from his cafe or to finding a book if GW isn't around. (Though beware of the younger, sometime around Dani (with an I) is working, she's a bit of a troll compared to her brother)
Jason totally is checking the place out... You know cause its totally giving weird vibes (good weird vibes, almost like its calming the raging Pits) and not just because it has a first edition Jane Austin (that the owner is totally maybe thinking of selling to Jason cause he can sense this man would treat it with respect)... Or that the tea is calming as heck.... Or watching Dani ("I like you. You can totally call me Ellie!") chaotically troll everyone around her.... Or that her older brother is fucking cute as hell... Who he may or may not had watched accidentally kill the Joker when the guy had been closing up the shop alone one night and had been caught in the alleyway on his way home...
No its totally cause this place is... off. Nothing else.
