Apple Tansey- Traditional Colonial Recipe ~

This historical recipe appears in The Compleat Housewife: Or, Accomplished Gentelwoman’s Companion, a cookbook written by Eliza Smith, originally published in 1742. Though the book was published in London, it was later reprinted and published in Williamsburgh, Virginia by the printer William Parks. It is the first cookbook ever to be published in the United States.

As in book: Take three pippins, slice them round in thin slices, and fry them with butter; then beat four eggs, with six spoonfuls of cream, a little rosewater, nutmeg, and sugar; stir them together, and pour it over the apples; let it fry a little, and turn it with a pye-plate. Garnish with lemon and sugar strew’d over it.

Final outcome choice

For my final outcome for this signature project I want to create a magazine/lookbook focusing on women that feel like the don’t fit into societies norms focusing on the grunge/punk/alternative way of dressing. To begin with I looked up punk magazines to see who my competitors would be, the first one I looked into was Vive Le Rock and I found they were definitely more male based with a very small percentage of articles with women and was very music based not fashion based, which isn't what I'm after. After searching for a while I believe that there's a gap in the market for a punk based fashion magazine, there's magazines that focus heavily on the music but when it comes to fashion there isn't one solely about punk fashion there's just articles here and there in various magazines such as Vogue and ID.

I then began looking at what sort of format I want to present this work I began researching into a wide variety of magazines such as The Gentelwoman, Riposte, Stack was also a really good website to see a wide variety of magazines and their layouts. After having a good look though I added images to my sketchbook of what I liked and didn’t like from various magazines. I’ve circled layouts I liked from both Foam and Riposte, I’m a big fan of using the whole page for a single image or having a large plain border around it as I find its an impactful way of communicating these images. However on the right side of the page I really don’t like the masses of writing on one page, I find it very boring and feels more like reading a book rather than a magazine, I do want to include text into my magazine but not to this degree so I need to continue my research of what sort of text formatting I like and would want to use.

On this page I continued exploring various formats this time more text based, I definitely prefer the minimalistic style but the boldness of it is really eye catching and definitely jumps out more. For a larger body of text I really like how ‘No idea is final’ lay out their pages so it’ll be good to try and do something similar in my magazine. I definitely think having contrasting colours from the text to the background is key for an eye catching magazine, and I also like the text over the image on the bottom left screenshot from a issue of Foam. There’s definitely a lot to take in and consider when choosing the layout so I know there’s going to be a lot of trial and error and experimenting before it comes to creating the final outcome.
